Rocky Roads
Context: Set during WW1, a very old GerEng fic that I started long before I even had this blog or was part of the Hetalia fandom. It's a very old piece of writing that I had no intention of finishing so I've pruned it from 11 pages to 5 pages into something approaching okay. I do think England is a bit OOC for how I usually write him these days, but otherwise I think it's okay. I mostly just want it out of my drafts.
Nobody had ever said it was easy to keep friends, Germany mused ruefully - and when one's life was fettered with the troubles of treaties and politics, it was twice as hard. Squinting across the rubble of Niemandsland, Germany fought back the rise of bile in the back of his throat, and doubled down. The days of the Hanseatic League were long-gone, the days of him and others (Not kin, but others like him, the dozens of German states as they were known, but not kin) walking side by side with the likes of England and Scotland. The days where he’d once, briefly, thought England the sun - blinding and great, as precious and gold as coin. In turn, England had valued him too, but nothing good belonged to the likes of them. He knew better these days, of course. But Germany would not ignore that once he loved England and England had loved him back. It was not just the gold, he told himself quietly, fist bunching around his bayonet. Smoke trailed wrathfully across the upturned earth, tangles of wire, men and horse obscuring his vision. Throat tightening, Germany (and his thousand states, all part of him now, the ones that didn’t make it) stood up slowly and narrowed his eyes. It had been four months since the start of the war, and there was a lull that set every nerve in his body on fire. The Napoleonic Wars weren’t this dull. Germany mused to himself, at least France knew how to put on a show. Enough of a show that it England on the hunt for allies, gold coin exchanged palm over palm - staring knowingly at him, the same infuriating smirk on his face as ever. Not much convincing was needed, England had teased as he did Germany’s shirt up for him. He’d responded it was out of a mutual dislike, a frustration with France more than anything - but England was oddly perceptive, for a brute - or perhaps I’m just that obvious? (‘’Why so dour?’’ The German Empire looked up with a jolt, a sheepish flush across cheeks that otherwise remained as if stone. England did not look away, and Germany found himself trapped in his stare. If things were simpler, perhaps Germany could’ve found a better answer, could’ve taken hold of England’s hand and kissed them sweetly. As it stood, nothing was ever simple for them and the Empire let out a wearisome snort, as if England did not know. ‘’The Naval race, everything. You know the answer, you’ve still got eyes, you know…’’
‘’Shut it.’’ England groused, pulling a cigarette from his lips and placing it to Germany’s. A kiss, transferred in smoke and warmth and an embrace they would never have. ‘’Things might change. Nobody truly wants war, except for the penny-pinchers.’’ There was a half-hearted laugh from England, but joy was as inconsequential as candyfloss in a gale in these darker times. ‘’Sense will win out in the end.’’ England murmured half-heartedly. They both knew the answer. If mortals had sense, they would not be where they stood, in the shadows of treaties and wars that loomed large like storms. While the latter was a comforting lie, the former was a truth that Germany had hoped not to hear.‘’I miss you, you know?’’)
-----------------The Christmas Truce ------------------------------------
He’d never seen such a miserable sight before. And never seen such a sight he was thankful for before either.Germany strode forward, a heart of lead, as he clenched his fists and walked like a storm incarnate. Snow and bone, what was the difference, crunched beneath his feet and he could finally look at England proper. ‘’How are you not dead?’’ He gasped softly, staring at purpling and red skin, hollow eyes and smile that flickered - a ragged flag. Germany wondered for a moment if he looked the same, a corpse propped up, staring. ‘’You should be dead.’’ Sniffed Germany, noticing a wound on the man’s neck, festering and red-hot, trench fever setting in.
A question trembled on his tongue - Who did that to you? Are you okay? - and keeled over, Germany’s eyes blazing as he glared at England. ‘’You shouldn’t be here, go back to your trench.’’ He hissed, pointing a finger across the snow-smothered terrain. ‘’Don’t take another step.’’ Come here. I missed you. Come here. ‘’Go back to your trench!’’ He begged, trembling as the sounds of singing floated above him, bringing good tidings - tidings not meant for such creatures as them, lands bathed in more blood than either remembered.
‘’Or what? You’ll shoot me?’’ His laugh heaved with nicotine, the German wincing slightly as England coughed and hawked. ‘’Yeah, right. You’re a mean shot. You’d have done it the moment I stuck my head out of that trench.’’ England pointed out, procuring a crumpled, cold packet of chocolate and pushing it into Germany’s hands. Briefly, as fingers brushed against one another, Germany fought back the urge to hold his hand, and he knew without speaking, England felt the same. ‘’Cadbury’s. Best chocolate in the world. Swear on it.’’
Germany rolled his eyes, breaking a piece of chocolate off and handing it to England. ‘’You’ll have to fight Belgium for that one.’’ He paused a beat, a lump in his throat. Cloying air and the harsh sting of toxic gases, he’d watched her stagger and stumble in the darkness, unable to see, unable to call out. Yet, here he was, joking about her as if they were nothing more than workplace friends. As if England hadn’t sworn to stand by her side.
‘’Ah, poor taste that one.’’ He muttered under his breath, shaking his head. ‘’Forget it. Don’t tell Belgium a word.’’ He’d woken up, almost thinking the whole war a nightmare, until he’d turned a little to his left and spotted the grim, haunted expression of Austria. He couldn’t escape that look, and by the looks of it, Austria couldn’t escape his own nightmares either. ‘’Wasn’t planning to.’’ England replied softly, looking down at mud-caked shoes. Water seeped in through the cracked leather, and privately he wondered if it was his turn to suffer from trench-foot like so many of his brothers in arms had. ‘’She’s too tired to talk.’’ He frowned, expression crumpling like a stack of cards. Though the men sang, the idle chatter of boys at play - he’d not missed the young faces, the ones that should’ve stayed at home, the ones that were not of age - exchanging gifts -, he knew it was not the same for some of them. Scotland and Wales were talking to a few soldiers, pretending as if they had not put a bullet between their friend’s eyes. Humans might die and take their grudges to their graves, but they were left behind in the uncomfortable wake of it all. Here he was, talking to the man who he’d promised so dearly to his friend that he would see to it that he was defeated.
‘’I miss you.’’ England spoke hoarsely. ‘’Please…don’t hold it against me if I shoot you.’’ It was nothing personal, this was not his war. Not Germany’s either, England mused ruefully, but it had to be said. He had to let Germany know. Friends ebbed and flowed, draining from his fingers, and England wasn’t going to lose another one. Not if he could help it. ‘’I’m just keeping my word.’’ He was quite sure it was the same for the Empire before him, a ghostly smile on his lips.
The Empire was not so sure, expression falling - dusk encroaching on day, the lean man stepping back as he was faced with the earnestness of England’s words. He’d been around a hundred years and a hundred years more, and for a second, Germany had to wonder if in all that time war had taken on a different meaning. If it even had a meaning at all. ‘’You might be quicker to forgive, but I’m not.’’ Germany straightened, raising his chin. ‘’I’m doing this for Austria-Hungary, not for you.’’ He thought that’d been perfectly clear - as stark as blood on snow, as vicious as the bullet that had pierced England’s lungs. ‘’It’s for my friend, and my friend only.’’ Germany ground out, staring England down. ‘’Don’t get your hopes up.’’ ‘’I-...’’ A flicker of hurt, like a gunshot wound. ‘’Of course, Germany.’’
England’s gaze hardened, tumbling stone as he stared the Empire down. Really, it should’ve been expected. How many of your men have I shot so far? How many of them did you know personally? Did you feel their bodies fall on the mud? Clearing his throat, England nodded mutely, shoving a bar of dark chocolate - wrinkled and worn from sitting in his cold pocket, a remnant of sentimentality perhaps, not yet blasted to smithereens against all odds - into Germany’s chest. ‘’Just take it, please. You look like you’re half-way into the grave.’’
‘’England, don’t-’’
‘’Don’t what!?’’ England snapped, a dog’s snarl in his throat - the red shimmer of the shuck across sea-blue eyes. He backed away, the sounds of laughter and singing, a thousand unlikely voices murmuring turned bitter in his ears. England wanted them all to shut up. Wanted all of them to go away and leave them alone. Alone. Just him and Germany. He sighed heavily, breath fogging in the thorn-sharp air. Typical, wasn’t it? England set his jaw as the taller man lumbered forward, a trembling hand tracing his jawline. ‘’Why do you have to make it more painful, German Empire?’’ He hissed the man’s name, glaring quietly at him.
‘’You look terrible.’’
‘’Oh cheers.’’ England snarked bitterly. ‘’Strange way of flirting you’ve got.’’
Germany winced, grasping England’s shirt collar and yanking him closer. The two of them shuffled down into a mine-crater, amidst the dirt and the dead, they sat. ‘’Don’t get hurt.’’ It was a fool’s errand, asking that of him. During war too. Licking his lips hesitantly, Germany leaned forward and pressed a kiss to cracked, bloodied lips - red-welled from the harsh winter winds or a man’s knuckles, Germany wasn’t sure. Ugh, can I not make up my mind?
Love wasn’t always so kind to logic, that was what he was rapidly finding out. ‘’I-...just don’t step on a land mine and blow yourself up, England.’’ Germany swallowed thickly. ‘’Die in honourable combat, by my hand - not by…by someone else.’’ He wanted England’s last thoughts to be him - and that terrified Germany. Why? Why do I want him to remember me?
‘’Romantic, aren’t you?’’ England groaned, ribcage heaving as he leaned forward to hug Germany. In spite of everything - every bruise, wound and corpse - he felt some comfort in the way his body fitted against his, as if his hands were always meant to be cradling him, holding him - hurting him too. It made his head spin, England’s cheek pressed against his chest. Everything was so damn complicated, and he could not pull away from Germany. ‘’You bastard.’’ England growled, as he held Germany’s body. There was companionship, certainly - but not one that came to him easily. Laughter rang out, the sounds of a football softly bouncing along the ruined earth, England screwing his nose up in resentment. Why can’t that be me? Why can’t that be us? Stupid and insignificant? Carefree and pointless? Germany winced as England pressed close to his body, shaking like a wounded dog. ‘’Hm, that I am.’’ He mumbled thickly, tensing like a spring as he felt England’s hand drift to his scalp - and then relaxing when he felt his hand gently run through his dark curls, snowflakes glittering his hair as they drifted absent-mindedly through the sky. Mud, blood and snow - clinging to his trousers - felt an oddly fitting place for them. Dirty, unholy and fragile - that was what they were, was it not? Carding his hands over England’s body, Germany rested his chin on England’s head with a heavy sigh.
‘’I do love you, it’s just…’’ His heart quivered like a cornered rabbit, nails digging into the back of England’s shirt. ‘’There’s too much, what’s to say that by morning that I won’t have killed you?’’ He’d do anything for his people, what was he but an extension of their beings? A thousand and more hearts beating in unison? Who was he to waste their hearts on England of all people? To be so damned selfish? To bend and waver, where he ought to stand tall?
‘’And what’s to say I won’t do the very same to you?’’ Growled England, a furtive kiss pressed against Germany’s neck - heated against cold, prickling skin. He fumbled with his pockets briefly and tugged out a battered cigarette. Quietly, Germany pulled out his lighter and lit England’s cigarette - the spark lighting up England’s eyes. They bored into him, the lean man shivering as he watched England take a deep drag of the cigarette. Smoke coiled in the air, as coquettish as dancers. ‘’You underestimate me, Germany.’’ He snorted as he pressed his cigarette to Germany’s lips, a kiss transferred in smoke and embers.
‘’Nein. I estimate you perfectly.’’ He sighed, dragging in a lungful of England’s cigarette. He wrapped an arm around the other as England leaned on him, heart thudding. ‘’I-I…’’ A carol drifted through the air, juxtaposed against the silence of the guns. Something, something about peace and holiness. Could not be further from anything relating to us. Germany thought, resting his cheek against England’s hair and tentatively pressing a kiss to his head as England sighed, eyes fluttering shut - snowflakes glittering on his eyelashes, hand pressed against his chest. ‘’...England, I-’’ He grimaced, eyes stinging all of a sudden. ‘’I-’’
‘’Don’t talk.’’ England wrapped his arms around him. ‘’There’s no need.’’ He reassured him, as the snow slowly drifted from the sky - laden on men's shoulders, as heavy as sin, as they quietly dragged the fallen back to their trenches. Tenderness reached with an outstretched palm from a wolf-grey sky, their heads lolling against one another - England’s on Germany’s shoulder and Germany’s on England’s head, as they stared into the falling snow.
Voices sung faintly in the distance, smoke coiling around their heads as they passed a single cigarette between them - Germany sighing as he pulled out a cold bar of dark chocolate, splitting it with a snap and handing half to England. Eyes twinkling gratefully, England took it and kissed Germany in return, sighing as a hand drifted up to cup the man’s scarred cheek.
Germany kissed back, trembling as he wrapped his arms around his stout waist. ‘’This is ridiculous.’’ He mumbled, drifting between logic and want - Dear God, he wanted this so much, so badly. - as he nudged England a little closer to his lap. Mud and blood and snow clung to the seat of his trousers, Germany shuddering at the feeling of the cold slush against his back. He didn’t want to think about tomorrow, didn’t want to think about the morning that surely brought a devastating promise. Cracked lips and worn knuckles, he clung to England and blocked out that dreadful reminder.
‘’Mph-’’ He gasped softly as England kissed him on the lips, straddling his lap as warm body pressed against warm body, chasing away that spectre of doubt. ‘’Now of all times? You’re so inconsiderate.’’ Germany blustered, pushing against England’s chest as the other snickered faintly, frosty fingers lacing with each other.
‘’You love me.’’ A distant shot rang out across the field, both men looking up as night bled into day. There was no more laughter, no more songs and reluctantly - though knowingly, bitter for their understanding all the same - they stood up, brushing the mud from their trousers. ‘’Well, back to business?’’ England sighed wearily, slowly closing his eyes.
Exhaustion ringed his face as he rubbed his eyes, stepping slowly out of the crater and pulling Germany after him. England’s footfalls crunching through the snow as Germany followed - half dead - behind him. They lingered for a moment under the stars, staring at one another with the furtive, shy glances of a pair of secret lovers, caught in a courtesan’s dallance in the midst of a glamorous ballroom. And then they parted, the illusion of a glittering ballroom fading, leaving only the cold, dark wake that was No-Man’s Land. As he approached his trench, Germany tensed - his gaze trawling through the rank and file of soldiers, the idle and excited chatter. It wouldn’t last, he mused, jaw tensing as he watched their higher-ups approach with flinty expressions. It wouldn’t last. It never did. And it’d do good for him to remember that, Germany scolded himself, brows furrowing as he watched his soldiers.
His people were what mattered, Germany corrected himself. To think so otherwise, went against his entire being, his whole purpose.

Every month we will pose a question and collate responses as a fun and informal little exercise in getting to know each other and spark discussion. This month's question is:
“How do you come up with your fic titles?”
Sicily: Tbh, I pick words or sentences that are commonly known in the fandoms I write for (this is boring I know, but its what I do :D)
Prush / @proosh: they mostly appear to me via divine manifestation. otherwise I select a thematically resonant word or concept :D
Tama / @delgumofics: Either the idea comes into my head pre-named or I struggle to come up with something [...] I should start naming all my fics like Light Novels
kalashlobo / @kalashnikovlobotomy: It's either a joke about the fic content or song titles/lyrics🤸♂️ you can pry them out my cold dead hands
Netherzon / @netherzon: Something thematically relevant, found during my research if it’s one of those fics, or song lyrics (also thematically relevant). It really depends on the type of fic for me
WhiteWings / @smuttyandabsurd: I'm a thief of lyrics and song titles myself, but sometimes my own genius is almost frightening
@folightening: Either the title comes with the idea or hits me while I'm writing. If it doesn't I have no idea what to title it. Trying to come up with something for most of my fics feels like I'm trying too hard so I'm trying to let myself be lazy about it.
Didi / @teaedon: mostly thematic, other times from lyrics, song titles. hetalia fics enable me to make titles in other languages and feel no remorse
ciel / @torontofetish: for most of my fics, i try to identify a central theme around which the fic is built, and then i either use a word or phrase that invokes imagery of that theme or a word or phrase from the fic itself that encapsulates that theme. with my hetalia fics specifically, i'm having a little fun by doing mostly this same thing, but in the native/official language of my pov character (or one of them, if there are multiple—it's vibes-based in that case).
Yukihitomi / @arthurhonda: I usually try to make it sound like a 2000s anime episode name
Mossman / @one-more-mossman: I pinpoint a main theme in my fic and search for cool songs about it. Then I steal the coolest sounding line
Lacy: usually writing fics and putting titles for me comes in three forms: 1) i finished the fic and i can randomly comes up with a name i am satisfied with, 2) i finished the fic and i cant come up with a name so i dig thru the songs i am currently obsessed with and use their lyrics, 3) i write the fic because of a few songs/quotes/poems so i try to find a title from there. Usually i dun directly name a fic after the song titles (cause i think it shows up when searched? ) either way its a chore to come up with titles 🙂
@billowingangel: Usually I do it based on the tone or feeling that I want to portray with the writing or how I felt writing it. If that makes any sense

Thoughts on any other relationships? itapan, romerica, maybe pruaus? you look like the type of platonic spain and romano, but maybe those two? any other ship involving england and/or france?
I dunno if this is apparent by my silly billy blog and all of its posting, but Arthur is very much my lil bean cake and who I focus my relationship thinking about the most haha
I love me some FrUK, obviously, but also PrUK, EngBel (ugh, beloved), and EngPort as my favourites, and I have been known to go diving headfirst into other ships like scoteng, usuk, asakiku, and engita and enjoy them immensely (I just like Arthur put against different personalities and AUs and seeing how he ticks, what can I say)
Other than this, I'm not really a shipping kind of gal. I prefer found/family, friendship, historical, or something plot driven and so usually I focus on and search for these in fics as the focus. I don't know what happened to me with FrUK but it got me by the soul hairs and won't let me go, I don't think this deeply or am continually inspired by any other ship in the same way long enough to generate any true feeling. I like the intimacy and the depth of a relationship, the smoothness and the edges, so romantic or otherwise I'm a happy camper and only go rabid when FrUK is about
Characters together then, I really like the bad friend trio as an old and very layered, complicated ball of things, and I really like our boy Gilbo with Hungary (I think Gilbert's a very neat character in general). I like ScotFra (blame Senditothemoon primarily) and I like NedPort thanks to Cake. I've never been massively fond of GerIta (I think the early fandom did Italy so dirty as a character and I've never recovered), though SuFin I find cute. I was also never big on Spamano, I think Spain's personality works much more interestingly with Belgium or Ned but never with either Prussia or France alone- only in that three
Really though anon, I'm to my shame very Arthur centric and don't give much thought to characters anymore outside of the sphere he interacts with (very bad of me I know, though this does mean there's a whole treasure trove of good Hetalia fic out there for other characters for me to find)

in request to someone to put this anonymously out of respect:
I have a confession to make. I'm a hater...or atleast I THOUGHT i was. I did not particularly cared about your blog Until tonight where I was scrolling through Ao3 and saw one of your bed time story fics. I decided to say "fuck it" and read one of your fics. I then went to read the origin comics, thinking it would be a hate read...but...I was laughing. Smiling. And giggling over how cute it was. My favorite parts of the comic was your author notes, being really proud of your small accomplishments in bettering your art. It made me, a fellow artist, proud.
I was once a hater but now fell in love with Mary and your AU. My problem was that I couldn't sleep tonight. I think because I feel like the grinch who's heart melted away and I just can't get this off my mind. So I typed this all up and drew some fanart cuz we have the same comfort character I think.
So uh. Sorry I misjudged your AU and OC. It reminded me of a children's show I use to watch and I liked seeing your progression with your art skill. sorry that this was so long. It's 3am and I literally can't sleep until I get this off my chest
Anyway here's a little something something as a apology. Idk how cottonball would've gotten damage. I'm thinking maybe freak dog/bully encounter on the way home from school
Uh anyway thanks and sorry again
hey! there’s nothing wrong about not liking something at first! sure my comics at first aren’t the best (After all, I was 16 when I started to write this story and i’m almost 24! the reason why my digital art looked like absolute shit was because my mom thought digital art was “fake art” and i was still learning how to master digital art with a newly-acquired tablet at the time) but I am so so glad that even with the flaws of my earlier stuff, it still manages to bring a smile to your face!
about the children’s show stuff...i did take a lot of inspiration from shows like that! some i can name off the top of my head were Heidi (the pre-ghibli adaptation), Bear in the Big Blue House, Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood (my beloved) and now most recently, Bluey!! I think it definitely has in part from the fact my childhood was a mess and wanted to create something that fosters wholesome vibes to heal and reclaim my childhood, especially from the fact i’m the only autistic person in my family :’)
but hey! at least though you were honest! i’ve had to deal with people in the fandom who said I was either “sanitizing” hetalia as a whole just because it was wholesome or a well-known artist (name redacted) who was vagueing about me in a gc when i was at work saying that they hated ocs like Mary because they were self-insert mary sues. but otherwise, i forgive you plain and simple :D
i apologize if this was definitely a tangent but this made me really happy! i probably think petunia (rich girl asshole bully in school) snipped cottonball’s leggy and germany saw that mary was in distress since cottonball is a comfort item for her since she had him since she was a lil baby, and he is a good dad who will fix him up!
#hetalia#hws germany#aph germany#ludwig beilschmidt#hws oc#hetalia oc#literally anon this made me so happy like you don't understand#like im so glad my work had such a profound effect to just make you smile#AND THE ART!!! ITS SO GOOD!!!

It's not a bad thing that you erred on the side of caution when that ask expressed discomfort tbh, given recent incidents about how fandom treats Asian fans and characters dismissively. Hate saying this, but Hetalia fandom does have a problem with downplaying Western imperialism or unequal power relations when shipping Eng//pan or similar ships like Ame//kor and Ame//pan, even in historical fics set in periods where imperialism can't be ignored just to make it 'wholesome' from the beginning. I don’t think you needed to delete the post, but adding those details about how you see Kiku's relationship with Arthur developing was good and important. Personally, I appreciated it, as I too like these ships, but have prev bad experiences in fandom. Can't speak for everybody, but one reason Asian fans I know, me included, also move away from canon for historical Hetalia is because of long-time problems with how South Korea and China are portrayed with Japanese stereotypes. I am fond of canon's uniqueness, but it also has drawbacks I can't overlook for those personal reasons. So there can be very different levels of engagement with canon amongst people who are otherwise invested in Hetalia. Just my 2 cents on it.
yeah I understand that completely! I've seen things like that happen all too often in this fandom, which is why I prefer to stay in my own corner.
canon has its problems– many problems I'd say, so I understand why some people don't engage with it! it's just that I assumed that certain things were more… commonly known? lol it was my bad ^^'

Hello everyone! It’s been a tough year for us all, and I wish I had been a bit more active on here. Still, I thank you for supporting me along the way!
For the fourth year in the row, I will be running a fundraising campaign for Liberty in North Korea, an organization that works to help people fleeing the North Korean regime safely make it to freedom. So, I’ve set up a Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) fundraising page, the link to which can be found in my blog description or as a secondary reblog of this post (posts with links won’t show in the tags).
Since Hetalia is back and in the spotlight (and not always in the best way), I want to prove that Hetalians aren’t just here for stereotypes and parody--our involvement in this fandom has changed many of us for the better, enlightening us to people and cultures we may have never otherwise known or cared about. Therefore, in honor of Hetalia’s 2021 return, I’m setting the goal this year at $500, the most ambitious yet since I’ve been running these fundraisers, by January 1st. According to LiNK, $100 is what it costs them to provide shelter and food for a family of four for one night. As a fandom, we can provide care for a family of four for five nights. Think about that...a fandom full a people who love these silly, endearing personifications of the nations of the world, providing safety and shelter to people fleeing famine and authoritarianism.
I know people can be strapped for cash this time of year, so don’t feel bad if you can’t donate! You can still reblog this post to help more people see it! I will also reblog this post with some more information about LiNK if you would like to learn more about what challenges North Korean refugees face and what sort of work LiNK does for them!
Let’s band together and change someone’s life for the better!

Hi, I'm new to the hetalia fandom. And I was wondering can you do soft platonic Yandere Allies and/ or Axis that just discovered a new colony ( I recently just watched Kolkol's video about how countries are born as babies ). So what is the Allies going to do when they find the new baby ( their a tiny newborn btw ) country peacefully sleeping in a pretty flower field. And when the new country wakes up, they start squealing happily and star reaching out to them with a cute gummy smile. Now the countries has new baby sister.
I like this idea~ Also welcome to the fandom! I’m an old fan back from the dead for season 7 ^^
America
Alfred was kind of lost at first when he saw a literal baby laying in a field of flowers
I mean even as a yandere he would never do something like leave a child to die
This is about when he realizes that maybe the kid wasn’t actually a human child, but the new colony he’s heard about
It’s 100% likely that Alfred has never seen a baby country before, not a newborn and not a chibi one either
The closest he’s seen to a baby country was probably Sealand
Alfred was about to pick up the kid and pawn them off to someone else because he’s got important things to do, but they opened their eyes and looked right at him
And then the kid smiled?? Reaching out for him??
You could literally hear his psyche snap
Alfred decides then and there that no one would be getting a hold of this kid other than him
He really changes more than he ever has when he has his yandere moments
Alfred become exactly what this kid needs, a responsible big brother that protects and teaches them, and by god does he do his job
This child will never know sadness, yes even if Alfred is a yandere and has his more violent moments where he basically barricades the child inside he could never truly hurt them
No one will ever lay a hand on them without facing the consequences
I also suspect that because this child is well, a baby, and will never be a love interest to him, Alfred will allow the child to leave and be somewhat free once they get older and can care for themselves
His condition though is that they have to call him and visit him every so often and tell him everything, even about the guy that bumped into them without apologizing 2 weeks ago
Canada
Matthew is very confused at first
I mean what kind of monster leaves a defenseless newborn out in a field of flowers?
It’s only when he sees the child does he realize they aren’t human but in fact the new colony that was near Canada
He never planned to not raise this child, I mean it was near him and he’d be damned if he was letting Alfred care for this baby instead
However, the baby finally opened its eyes and immediately started smiling and laughing at him, even trying to grab onto him
Matthew kind of gets a dark aura around him, if anyone were to have seen him at this moment they probably wouldn’t even recognize him
It’s at this moment he decides to be this baby’s big brother forever, to protect them, to keep them away from war and everything else that could hurt them even at his own expense
Matthew doesn’t change much, he’s already very responsible and he knows the basic baby care
But his attitude is different around others now
Unlike Alfred who would keep the baby away from others Matthew will at the very least show them to those he trusts, so France or Cuba, maybe even England too
He wouldn’t hesitate to snatch them up or even yell at whoever is holding them too long or making them cry
Matthew won’t let the child go far once they grow up
They may not have to live with him, but they aren’t going to leave for their country by themselves or live in a completely different province than him
He just has to protect the baby, even when they aren’t a baby anymore,
he will even lose his polite Canadian facade to protect them
England
This isn’t Arthur’s first rodeo
he knows from the moment he sees the baby in the flowers what happened and what it means
And what it means is that he’s a big brother again
Already without even getting close to the baby does he decide to kill anyone who would dare hurt them or take them away
But when he does get closer and they wake up giggling and reaching for him
Oh boy is he all the more smitten and determined now
The baby will likely never see anyone other than him or ever even learn about anyone other than him and themselves
Arthur is afraid they’ll choose someone over him and leave him all alone again
so he just refuses to tell them anything other than the edited version of British history and the baby’s history
He will fight and destroy anyone who comes to see the baby or tries to tell him he’s acting insane
He just doesn’t buy it, this is normal big brother behavior, it’s his duty to protect and shield them from the world
As stated before the baby will likely know nothing other than him when they grow up, they won’t be allowed to leave either
He’ll make up any excuse to keep them inside
Kind of like a Tangled situation where he tells scary stories of the outside to make them fear ever leaving his house or its perimeters
France
Just like Arthur, he knew the second he saw the child that it was no ordinary human baby
Francis was going to take care of them regardless of what or who the baby was
He was content and already falling in love with the baby while it was peacefully sleeping
But then they opened their eyes and squealed in happiness at seeing him!!
Francis’ yandere side becomes more apparent after this point
He’s also one of the few who would raise the baby to call him papa or dad, while he likes being big brother he feels it’s different in this situation since he’s going to raise them from their newborn state
The baby will only see people Francis approves of, people he knows won’t steal the baby away from him or convince him he wasn’t stable enough to raise them
So Canada, Monaco, and Seychelles
England will never even know of the child, Francis can’t trust that he won’t try and fight him for the baby
He will tell the baby everything, the child will grow up knowing the world, but Francis twists some things to boost himself and his history up so that his child will always hold him in high regards
The baby will never lift a finger growing up, Francis will do everything for them
Clothes, accessories, decor, entertainment, food, pets, anything the child asked for would be placed at their feet
That’s kind of Francis’ plot to keep the child with him forever
They won’t want to leave and live on their own if they don’t know how to do anything without him
But he would let them leave if they really wanted to, they would have to live close by though
He needs to come and visit them as often as he wants and possibly figure out who he needs to get rid of if his baby ever gets hurt
Russia
While I don’t think Ivan has had any experience seeing or raising a newborn nation he knows what the baby is
He’s concerned though, this child is a new colony more than likely near his home, so it must be freezing out here for the little thing
He feels for it, his yandere side is angry and protective for the small baby, how could Mother Nature just birth them in such a cold and unforgiving place
He plans to keep the baby after holding them, he becomes attached just like that, I mean they were so cute sleeping like that totally unaware of everything
Ah but then they open their eyes and reach out for him, laughing and happy to see him
His crueler side agrees that anyone and everyone must suffer if they attempt to steal his little sunshine away
Even Belarus won’t scare him anymore when it comes to his new little sibling
Since Russia is known to not have friends no one will be seeing the baby, and Belarus might catch a glimpse but will otherwise not be allowed to ever interact with them
Lithuania might be the only one allowed to ever see the baby actually, Ivan likes him the most and if he were to come over he would allow Lithuania the honor of meeting and even holding you
He just better be careful
Ivan will protect them from everyone, even his own sisters
The baby won’t grow up knowing anything about the world other than it is cruel and unforgiving to people like them
Ivan will make sure that the child depends on him and him alone as a provider and protector
He won’t let them leave his house, the baby, the colony, their people, it’s his, and he promises to take good care of them
Everyone who gets close to the child will ultimately disappear if they seem to begin liking them more than Ivan, and no one is allowed to be a big brother or even sister other than himself
China
Yao of course knows a baby country when he sees one
This was the perfect spot, after all, a nice flowery field with no human town or village nearby
Perfect for nurturing a newborn country and also incredibly unlikely that it was a living human newborn
When he gets close enough to see them fully his yandere possessive side is already going crazy, he wants to protect them and be their big brother more than he wants to breathe
And it doesn’t help any when they finally wake up from sleeping and excitedly reach for him
Yao feels so loved at that moment
He decides only a few will see the new baby, Japan, Vietnam, and maybe South Korea
These are people that probably won’t do much to stop him from raising and being possessive over the baby
Japan and Vietnam surely won’t start a war to stop him and he won’t mind any rude comments they may make towards him since he will just cut them off from his life and South Korea wants his approval so if anything he’d support Yao’s decision
The baby will grow up sheltered, only hearing the good things about China and Chinese history
he will teach them very little about other Asian cultures and probably nothing of Western cultures
The only exception was if their culture was considered Western, then he would teach only their western culture to them that approved of
The baby was also never going to get the option to leave
Yao will raise them so they can be strong when he isn’t there but he won’t raise them to be completely independent
Surprisingly though, he would let them live on their own, even in their own country, when the time comes, but they will never truly be free
they will always be a part of China and he will make sure of it
Germany
Ludwig is also very clueless as to what the baby is
I mean, obviously a baby, but it’s strange how someone left them here considering it was quite a ways away from the nearest town and this baby didn’t look old enough to be more than a few days old
He will eventually realize that they were a colony that popped up near Germany
This is where his possessiveness starts, they were his colony in his mind and he was going to be their big brother
Ludwig gets really hooked however when they open their eyes from sleeping and make such cute happy noises he can’t help but become scarily possessive and protective over them
No one but a few of the other Germanic countries will see the child
Prussia is a given, though Ludwig is not afraid to threaten, reprimand, or cut him off for anything dangerous or harmful he may do to the baby
And Austria and Hungary will see his new sibling, though he will be keeping a close eye on Hungary as she is the biggest threat to taking them away from him
The baby will grow up cared for and knowledgeable but will follow a strict way of life
They aren’t to mock him or others, they must exercise and train, they must study history and learn about the past both their own and others, Ludwig values intelligence and strength and wishes them onto his sibling
He will not tolerate anyone messing with them however, even if they become strong or stronger than him he will always protect them in the long run since he doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty for revenge
Ludwig would let the child leave when they got older, out of everyone he is the least possessive when they grow up
His yandere tendencies seem to have only been strongly attached to baby them and while he would certainly destroy anyone who messed with them, he isn’t as possessive as he used to be, just protective now
Italy
Feliciano knows what that little baby in the flower field is
I mean, he was once one and Grandpa Rome often told him about when he found him and his older brother
He wasn’t sure if he could raise the baby though
He knows he isn’t super strong, not the best role model sometimes too, so he planned to see if someone like Austria or Spain would want to raise them
That all changed when they opened their eyes and immediately reached out for him in happiness
His more possessive yandere self couldn’t help but get immediately enamored by their charm
Since Feliciano got attached and he’s yandere, he becomes stingy with the baby
No one gets to see them, not Austria, Hungary, especially not Germany, Japan, or even Romano would be allowed to see the baby
Feliciano feels like they would outshine him, if he allowed the baby to look at them and see how much more capable they were he knew they wouldn’t stay with him
Because while he could and will kill for the child, he can’t fight fairly or intimidate anyone like the others could
He would teach them everything about Italy though! And of course their own culture too
But he would leave out everything else and always avoid teaching them about anyone else
The child would also be spoiled, Feliciano is similar to Francis in that aspect
He just wants them to be happy and to rely on him
They probably would never get to leave his house though, he really is stingy and really good at manipulating them into staying
Feliciano just really wants to be depended on for as long as he can get them too
Japan
Kiku knew what this child was
I mean, they obviously weren’t a human as they surely would’ve died at this point or even be crying hysterically for help
He had no plans to raise them, yandere or not, he’s still not the fondest of touch and them being a child didn’t help as they would not understand the concept of personal space or not wanting to be touched
So he was about ready to phone China or even Germany for help
But before he could do anything the baby woke up, smiling and cooing at him as if they were waiting for him and loved him already
You can hear his last shred of non-yandere sanity and rationality snap
He immediately becomes protective of them
They would be his little colony, he would take care of them and their people and he would make sure there was never any problems
No one would see them and they would never be allowed to make human friends either
He would isolate them from everyone, even to the point where he ruins his own progress of coming out of his shell just so they can isolate themselves together
He will make sure the child comes to know the world as a lovely and beautiful place, but one that they should never see without him
His sibling becomes spoiled, but unlike Italy and France, the child isn’t going to be waited on or just simply given everything
They will be spoiled by everything they could ever want but it’s only if they behave
No mentioning leaving or visiting places unless he brought it up and they must be respectful
Kiku will not be the big brother or someone who doesn’t know at the very least basic manners and respect
The child won’t be leaving when they grow up either, if anything Kiku would’ve successfully discouraged them from wanting to be social and molded them into basically a mini him
Romano
Lovino unlike Feliciano probably did not ever get told how he came to be or what a newborn colony/country looks like
So he definitely thinks someone just left a human baby in some flowers
Eventually, it will click that hey, a new colony appeared, a baby in a flower patch far away from any humans but relatively close to Southern Italy, ah it’s a baby country
Lovino most definitely won’t want the baby at first, he’s got some...other...priorities and some issues
He wants to call Spain asap and get the kid somewhere relatively safe
But as he’s walking away with the kid it opens its eyes and reaches out for him happily squealing
Any rationality Lovino may have had is gone now, everything his yandere side craves, love, affection, dependency, it’s all this child could give him by being his little sibling
As seen, he wants to be praised by his brother so this baby is like his second chance, his saving grace to be successful and a hero in someone’s eyes
Because of this the child will never meet anyone, he can’t afford for them to meet Feliciano or Spain because he knows deep down they would certainly like them more than him
Lovino will teach them about Southern Italy, about their culture, and maybe even about some Northern Italian and Spanish culture and traditions but under the guise that it was actually his
He won’t want this child to know anything but him and his house, no friends, no family other than him, he would make the child a recluse
He’s not necessarily the nicest sometimes, he’s prone to aggravate easily and he hates when they mention outside or seeing other people so sometimes he can come off as a little mean
But he always apologizes to them and makes it up to them since he wants them to be happy and to love him
The child won’t be allowed to be independent and leave, Lovino really will do anything to keep them together because he really doesn’t want to lose them or their love
Prussia
Gilbert is old let’s face it, he knows a newborn country when he sees one
I mean he’s likely helped raise a lot of Germanic countries and states before so this is nothing new
He obviously wants to be the baby’s new older brother, he doesn’t need any more convincing or thinking on that matter
It’s just when the baby did wake up and start squealing and reaching out for him, Gilbert realizes this won’t be the same as raising Germany
He can instantly feel the deep connection, the deep need to protect and shelter them for the rest of time
The possessiveness to not let anyone see the baby or take their attention away from him is immense
So that’s what he does
He stops relying on Germany, moves out, and forbids anyone and everyone from ever entering or coming to his home
He can't afford for this child to meet anyone else, he knows he’s no one’s favorite in the end and they would pick someone else
He knows this baby would choose Germany, Austria, or Hungary over him in a heartbeat so he won’t give them the chance
He teaches the child about Prussian history only, he wants his new sibling to be raised on his same values and culture
He wants them to feel a kinship with him and him alone
He will also isolate them from everyone since no one is coming and he would never let them anyways
he puts his own mind at ease by telling them scary stories about war, wars like he’s been in so that they will never have the urge to go out and think he is undefeatable and strong
Prussia, along with Russia, is another very big one that would very much destroy even another country if they tried to mess with his new sibling and/or steal them away

Heya Treat,
Not a request or anything but just wanted to see how everything.
I know you don’t write for FNF anymore but happy that you’re writing for other fandoms. I’m trying to open myself to other fandoms to write atm
But hope everything is well
Tank /Ayrus (prefer to be called Ayrus, Tank anon is getting kinda stale 💀)
Sure thing Ayrus. I do still write for FNF, I just don't find it all that fun anymore. I'm really falling out of the fandom, I like the music and everything I'm getting tired of it? I was never like really obsessed with the game in general, but I liked the characters and thought it'd be fun to write for them. I didn't know that's what I'd be known for on here.
I'd actually like to start posting more of my art and write for my current obsessions with it being Sdra2, Danganronpa, and Pokemon. If that loses me my followers then I'm just going to have to be ok with that because I'm just really not that interested anymore. I tried to open up the listing for different characters and it just gets too repetitive for me now. At most I would stop writing for the most popular characters on the list, but I'm sure that would only upset people as well.
I'm not really sure how to go about it. FNAF was rather easy to stop writing about since it wasn't really the large majority of my reader's favorite thing. I feel like starting with such a contrasting fandom wasn't exactly in my best interest, but it got me my audience.
I'd still like to write for characters like Senpai. Hell I was even thinking about writing for DDLC but scrapped that idea. There are not a lot of fandoms that I can say I'm super into besides for Danganronpa and Pokemon. Maybe Yu-gi-oh as a close third, but I forget the story plots past Yusei and the rest of the protags never caught my interests. Even thinking of miniscule fandoms, I can't think of anything I'd want to really write for.
I used to be into Hetalia, but that's too much of a trigger to fall back into, can't even watch the new season without feeling like I'm putting myself in danger. Writing about creepypasta's would be just weird for me, giving me middle school fangirl vibes that are just way too overpowering to even consider.
If you have any ideas of things I could write for that you think I'd be interested in I'll do some research, but otherwise....just this I guess.
Thanks for sitting through my TedTalk
- Treat

I am confused. I am hurt. I don’t know what to think. This is a long post. A very long post that is personal but I’ve had it in my head for a while to write. You don’t have to read this. This post has no real meaning. It’s more of a rant of how I feel in the world of fandom, my experiences, and why this posts exists.
Again, you do not have to read this.
You have been warned.
DO NOT REBLOG THIS POST!!!!
When I became an English major in college, I did so knowing several things. One of those is the fact I love literature and I love discovering why authors, creators, and artists wrote what became their most well known work.
Where am I going?
My first fandom was when I was in Junior High (about 13-14 years old) that I was a part of, meaning I read fan fiction and discovered fan art of, was either Naruto or Pokémon. To me these works were escapes of my real confusing life. Especially when I moved states and schools. I had no one. Through this, I discovered what I liked and didn’t like in the world of fiction and was introduced to fandom words/slang such as shipping, fan fiction, lemons (which I don’t think is used as often now), different types of writing, yaoi, yuri, and a few more I can’t remember. This also included the all important phrase Don’t like don’t read. This was when I was in my early teens.
But I was in a phase where I could find what I found interesting and that was that.
When I got to high school, I was still this awkward quiet kid with no friends. But I did have marching band so that was something.
At this point was was interested in Ouran Highschool Host Club, Death Note, a series called Beauty Pop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and a few others. This was also around the time where I began writing fanfiction for OHSC and even began buying manga. Anyway, this was my introduction to fandom as a teenager. And this is before Tumblr.
All I had were my friends, videos on YouTube, and my own interests. No one really understood why I loved all these things.
Then came the very first fandom I became fully obsessed in my sophomore year: a small series called Hetalia Axis Powers. I was completely invested in this fandom. So much so I wrote fan fiction, bought merch, and read a lot of fan fiction myself. I think it was because, at the time I thought it was because the art style was cute, the voice acting wasn’t half bad and it had to do with history. But this is where things got interesting for me and learning about fandom as a whole.
As a teen, I hadn’t known about AUs and this series had a lot of them. From the usual school AUs to odd ones. I usually stayed in my bubble and kept up the mantra Don’t like Don’t read.
But why talk about it?
Well, let’s just say a lot of the content later on became weird and new. I learned a lot about new terms like de-aging and ABO. But this leads to interest which once again let me know what genres of fan fiction I like.
I continued on with this fandom for about 3 years. And what broke it was the drama and how people were finding a sudden moral compass for personified countries. I mean there are other problems with that show that I recognize now as an adult and didn't see as a kid but that’s for another time. But I quietly left because I was beginning to understand that the drama wasn’t worth a tv show.
I would say the next fandom I was invested in and loved and I think had the least amount of drama was Fairy Tail. Now I fell in love with this series because of the story, characters, and the welcoming fandom. Overall there was rarely any drama because I think we all knew that we had to be civil with each other and respect our ships. While I’m not part of that fandom anymore a lot of people on Tumblr and FFN were very welcoming. The main series kinda fizzled out but that was one of the few positive fandom experiences I had.
I was at that point in my life where I was in college, created my Tumblr and posted regularly to escape life.
Coming off that fandom, I was part of the Yuri on Ice! fandom from beginning to the end. I mean it’s a sports anime that’s about men's figure skating and how it can affect athletes just to get a gist of it.
That’s when my experience with fandom became interesting because these characters were being paired in a way that made me feel like they can’t be paired with anyone else. Like, there was a pairing we were all cheering for to happen by the end.
This is the first series I was highly interested in as an adult where the ages of the characters were defined. There were a few in their teens, some in their early to mid 20s, and a couple in their 30s. Now this was a historic anime for several reasons. The main being there being a gay relationship being shown in a positive light and mental illness being shown in a way that wasn’t patronizing and negative. I loved this show for those reasons. But I also quickly learned how people would take these characters (especially those with huge age differences) and pair them up. That was my first introduction to criticism of how ‘gross’ it would be for a 15 year old to be paired up with an 18 year old. But I saw a problem that made me second guess my thinking. When I was in high school, I knew someone who was a sophomore at 15 and dated someone who was 18. Why was there a problem?
I knew if I voiced this that I would be shamed and told that I was disgusting. Eventually I had enough and left shortly after the series ended.
Then came the Voltron: Legendary Defender series. Oh boy.
Now that series came out while I was in college and I often viewed it in a critical perspective similar to one would a piece of literature because my major was in English and that was what I was taught. Like YOI I was part of this fandom day 1 because it was so different from the original Voltron series from the 80s. I loved how the fandom dissected everything in every episode. There were watch parties, analysis videos, and even skits at conventions. It was a fandom I knew I wanted to be a part of. But then there was fanfiction that I found odd and knew that I never wanted to read that. People were writing about topics that made me uncomfortable and I didn’t know how to deal with it. After a while, I questioned why I was forcing myself to read them in the first place. So, I stopped reading them. This was also around the time where I discovered AO3 and their amazing tagging system. Because if the tagging system was not there, I probably would have stopped reading fanfiction all together.
But then there was drama, shipping wars, morality wars, and I had enough. I was there until it ended and left quietly. Which is sad considering I loved the experience but it was ruined by what people thought was right for fictional characters.
Now you may be asking “What was the point of this post?”
To answer your question, I don’t know.
I have loved reading since I was a kid. And when I got to high school, I had this AP teacher who told us something that has stayed with me to this day.
‘As a reader we are detectives. We want to know why the author wrote this book. We want to know what influenced them.’
I took that saying to heart and approach everything through a critical lens. Which is difficult in a fandom. It’s hard to have a critical approach to a series that everyone takes for a grain of salt.
I have been exposed to a lot of books and pieces of literature that have been considered controversial because of their content. When I left high school, I began to realize what genres of books I like in the YA genre and in literature.
I experimented.
And when you think about it, that’s what you do with fan fiction and fandom. We are always experimenting. We are always finding what we like and don’t like.
But recently I’ve noticed a new fandom term that makes me wonder where I fall in all of this craziness we call fandom.
Pro-Fiction/Pro-Shipper
It wasn’t until last year I saw this word thrown around in a new fandom I am in. I tried to do some research but I couldn't find anything. Nothing. And then I learned it’s a new term in itself.
I won’t go into detail but it reminds of the ‘video games are violent so that makes so-and-so violent’ argument parents made when Mortal Kombat came out.
Well you still didn’t answer the question.
And you’d be right. I saw a post from a follower that saddened me and honestly freaked me out. Why announce that you hate a specific group? It felt like a call out post without saying any names. A warning that states: Block me or out yourself. Or rather: Block me or else.
Do I identify as this? To tell you the truth, I don’t know. I think critically and see things differently. In fact everyone does.
We are always going to be influenced by the media whether it be a movie, television, a book, or a video game. We will always love these storylines and characters. We will always take the messages to heart. We will always cheer for the hero and maybe the villain too.
I do want you guys to remember this, make your own fandom experience. Block those who make you feel uncomfortable and make you feel like you don’t matter. You do.
You are your own person. No one can tell you otherwise. If you feel uncomfortable, then maybe you need to leave the fandom. Or find a space in the fandom that you can be yourself. Or don’t care what people think and do what you always do.
It’s all up to you.

The great and horrible thing about hetalia is its very core: the symbolism of a person representing an entire nation. It’s easy to use, and potentially abuse (in the worst corners of this fandom, if you know what I mean) a hetalia character for something utterly malicious because of this weakness. Generalizing a whole nation for a stereotype… yes in a way hetalia is that. But all the same, it is amazing what sort of doors these hetalia-nation-people have opened for me. Would I ever think about areas of the globe the same way? From my West Europe and USA centric history and social studies classes, I would have never known about the little intricacies of Eastern Europe and Eastern Asia. Would I have known much about Nordic countries, or even Austria-Hungary? No. Without my interest in humanoid nation beings, would I bother otherwise? I read historical hetalia fanfiction, and then that stemmed into other parts of my life. I also started to fall in love with historical-fiction and I still love the genre to this day. Additionally, I started to be interested in culture. Not a lot of course, but more than I would if I had never run into this fandom.
I do not think this is the typical experience for a lot of hetalia fans. Our fandom is scattered into many different directions, so perhaps it was not your love for history that blossomed from hetalia, but rather your love for fanart, or shipping (hot, sexy, probably blond) men, or maybe even just a first taste into anime. But this is how this fandom has and will affect me.

If you can’t support me, I completely understand, but please reblog and spread the message so that it can reach more people.

Unlike last time Hetalia got a new season, the response has not been particularly positive, and I’m seeing a lot of twisted feelings towards the show and the fandom to a point where it seems long time content creators are stepping away from it. I know anyone still active who follows me either are or were fans of Hetalia, so it should be relevant for all y’all.
As a fan who never fell out of the show, I find the response sad though healthy, and even if I know I ghosted you all on tumblr (sorry) because of time constraints and mental health, I still make the occasional CMVs. Fact is, I do not let go of special interests very easily. It seems a lot of you all started watching the show at 10-14 years old, where I myself was a bit older – 17 – and had grown a bit more. Long story short, my Naruto phase was your Hetalia phase, and no, it’s not pretty. You’re young and stupid and don’t know much critical thinking and make mistakes, and you have to forgive yourself for those mistakes, especially when the content you consume is associated with the real world in a sensitive subject.
But after seeing all these posts explaining all the bad we see from Hetalia, I wanted to make a post explaining what I learned from it – all the good that can come with a show like this if you stay aware of perspective. I am not excusing all the bad that came with it, for WWII is a serious event in history that should never be forgotten nor made fun of, but here goes:
I went from a ‘war-is-cool’ history buff to one who truly delved in and learned the intricacies of history, being fascinated with the ‘hows’ and the ‘whys’ as well as getting an excuse to look at the histories of nations which I’d never otherwise be interested in, and I know a lot of other people in the fandom did the same. This is how history should be known, as that is how we can truly apply it to the real world.
I learned to separate people from their countries. To give an example that’ll hit close to much of tumblr, when I started Hetalia I hated Americans with a passion because of the road “you” had put the world on, and I considered all y’all dumb and bad as a cause of it. Getting that excuse to take an ACTUAL look at how your nation functioned and what communities truly hid behind the borders, I learned instead that your government is corrupt as shit, your society is rigged against you and you have been forced to stand by and watch as chaos happens. It got applied to the world as a whole, where I considered other nations being as dynamic as my own, with people both good and bad, and the actions of the nation is even less of a reflection of the people in the cases of corrupt democracies or dictatorships.
I separated from Colonial world views. I was never actively racist, brought up in a proper home, and already before Hetalia I fiercely protected the rights of Muslims who are often mistreated in my nation and tried to hear them out when possible. But I was a Westerner, and even if the nation I came from had barely participated in invasions, I had learned to consider my culture ‘correct’ and native and African cultures ‘primitive’. While the journey was long, a step wise process of realizing things like there was nothing inherently ethically wrong eating dogs or partially incubated duck eggs, only in how the animals were acquired, that cultural progress is heavily dependent on perspective and that fucking genocide of native peoples still happen in this damn century, Hetalia was the stepping stone which gave me the interest in other nations to expand my world view. I probably ain’t done here – I have a whole life of outside influences to unlearn – but I’m further than most people I know in my near surroundings, and I’ve even managed to move my parents who originally taught me to respect people of all kinds in the first place.
I learned Nazis were people. This is a conversation which often comes up here on tumblr, and the demonization Nazi Germany and its government directly allows actual Nazis and fascists like Richard Spencer a free pass because they look groomed and proper. Until then, I’d simply assumed no one was ‘stupid enough to be a Nazi’ because of the atrocities of WWII and therefore looked at the world naively. Realizing how little true support Nazis had during WWII and similarly anyone could end down that pungent rabbit hole, I became careful of what I excused on social media and allowed myself to doubt seemingly normal people if their behaviour was alarming – such as the police man who is supposed to be a damn ‘hero’ of society.
I learned how to deal with material sensitive to others. A common problem in the fandom has always been the cosplaying and portrayal of Nazis, especially at cons and the like, and in a similar vein – I did blackface once because of Hetalia. The horrible thing about this is that blackface is immensely common in Europe – at least my own country – and blackface frequently happens at schools during ‘international’ events, where whole classrooms are assigned to portray a designated country. A whole of two times – in 6th grade as well as 2nd grade of high school – I was exposed to blackface as my class was given an African nation to portray – Somalia the first time, Kenya the second. No one, adult, teen or child, are aware of the history of race imitation in my country, but by the second time I was supposed to participate in dressing up as an African tribe, I’d understood the issue – thanks to Hetalia. My friend group of white, privileged, European teens discussed what symbolism was appropriate at cons or in videos – could we wear the Iron Cross? The Nazi flag? What if we burned it during the video? These thoughts are not usually a part of the mind of European youth, and I consider that a grave problem which leads to people making fun of ‘triggers’, downplaying racial issues and the like.
It offered me a means to make history personal. The biggest struggle for good history teachers and the reason we are often made to read and write letters from the periods we study is to make it seem real and get a emotional connection to these past, lost peoples. Hetalia offered puppets for me to place into historical contexts to make them truly real – the main driver pushing me away from mere fascination of war, since I suddenly felt the horrors of warfare through the characters that I loved. Things like Elizabeth I’s court, the conquests of Rome, the dissolution of the Kalmar Union, the battlefield of Somme, the invasion of America, damn slavery becomes different when something you already know is a part of it and you can see them in there. Hearing of people of the past should in itself be enough, and for the closest parts of history (WWII and afterwards) it always was for me, but we are human. We cannot understand the size of a billion, and we struggle understanding the lives of those living centuries before us, unless we are offered context.
I’m not blind to the issues of the fandom or the show. I was here for ‘the r*pist, the pervert and the p*dophile’, I know of South Korean and Chinese issues with the show, and I heard the gassing joke in the show’s dub and got nauseous from discomfort and anger. I’ve always been in the fringe of the fandom due to my social disabilities, so I don’t know everything that happened, but I’ve seen many racist OCs and disrespecting of historical sites. It’s not pretty, but I will believe these people, who were likely young, likely learned in time. And I may have been able to learn these things by other means, but not in the same way, and not through personal interest and research that’s helped me become sceptical and analysing of the world around me.
At its core, Hetalia is about watching a normal, nerdy guy learn how to draw, using stereotypic country personifications mainly from the perspective of Japan. It’s natural he chooses Japan, since he’s Japanese, and WWII is unfortunately the automatic historical event for most common people to focus on – but Hetalia doesn’t even solely focus on that, but is an amalgamation of vaguely correct historical situations played out by the characters, and often it is with the intent of comedy rather than the grimness often associated with historical settings which allows a wider audience than merely history nerds.
What I want you all to do is learn from your mistakes and forgive your younger selves for not knowing better. Maybe reflect on what you got from the show, rather than what you lost. A new generation of young Hetalians is likely coming with the new season, and us old timers might be able to help them avoid pitfalls if we stay around to teach them. The best of the show is compassion towards the people of the world combined and love of history, as I believe Hima wanted it – the worst is Nazi apologetics and racial stereotyping. We decide in what direction we take it, and what lessons we bring into the future.
TL;DR: As a lot of media intended for older audiences, Hetalia is a show which has to be watched critically, which makes it dangerous for young people to watch unhinged, but it also opens up for interest in the world beyond the borders you live within. We should be aware of the issues and learn from them, but in and of itself the show has a lot of good to offer in learning compassion for other nations and cultural groups.
#impressive how active I've become these last weeks#I kinda feel embarrassed#but Hetalia is coming back#and a lot of people are feeling dread because of it#my own feelings are mixed#but Hetalia is was gave me friends and started expanding my world view#other people might get a similar benefit from it#and I want them to have the chance#I'd love to hear the opinions of others tho#also#welcome to my usual iconic long posts

On the future of Humourtalia
Hi, everyone. The last time I left, I didn't say goodbye. So this time, I thought I owed you all at least that.
Humourtalia was one of the best worst impulse decisions of my life. I loved writing for you all, getting to know some of you, and hosting those amazing, whirlwind events. I will never forget things like The Ad Hominem Murder or The Bird's Nest Ball so long as I live. Though being in the Hetalia fandom had its ups and downs, this blog was, for me, one of its greatest ups.
However, though I am in a place where I can write again, my life has moved on. I am no longer a part of the Hetalia fandom--and no, this revival can't tempt me back--and I have other things to keep me occupied, writing or otherwise. Therefore, Humourtalia will not be returning.
In addition to this, having reviewed just a fraction of my posts with my rose-tinted Hetalia goggles removed, I am discomforted and even appalled by some of the 'jokes' I made. In wanting to stick to the canon characterisation, I parroted some harmful stereotypes. I made jokes that punched down; that were tone deaf, trivialising, in poor taste, even xenophobic or racist. I absolutely should have known better. Fortunately, I do now.
I won't delete the posts I'm referring to, because I do not want to whitewash this blog or my personal history in an attempt to appear morally pure. That helps no one. Acknowledging those posts, learning from them, and working to do better in any future writing is far more useful.
I also wish to clarify that in saying this, I am not saying you should not like Hetalia. It is problematic--moreso than most media, due to the facts it involves incredibly sensitive topics such as nationality, geopolitics, culture, and history, and often trips up in its representations of those things. But be aware of these problems and strive to do better in fandom content. Don't repeat my mistakes: think critically about whether portraying a certain country in a certain way would be appropriate. If you're unsure, Hetalia has fans across the globe, who belong to most of the countries it represents. Many are more than willing to help people represent their nation in a more sympathetic and sensitive way than canon might! Please listen to them and value the knowledge and insight they have to share.
To those of you still here, thank you. Thank you for the support and love and encouragement you gave me over the years, for the bits where I did get it right. I appreciate you so much, and the confidence you gave me to keep writing, to improve to the place I am now. In return, at the end of all this, the least I can hope is that--despite its flaws--this blog gave you just that little laugh, the titter, the chortle, that you needed to get through the day.
Signing off for the last time,
Your Admin

TW: The most notable problem with the Hetalia fandom, otherwise known as n*zi art.
So I saw an Instagram artist who made a post where the german brothers were dressed in their WW2 uniforms while getting married to Russia. I went to the comments, and while everyone else was passing the vibe check, the artist was in the comments say that her n*zi art was necessary. How in the actual fuck is it necessary? Is she gonna die if she doesn't fetishize historical tragedies? And Instagram is saying it doesn't contain hate symbols, which is on a whole nother level of stupid. Anyways, don't draw hetalia art of actual tragedies, this is a satirical anime about homoerotic propaganda tropes.
