a term under the otherkin umbrella where one physically identifies as one species/thing (which can be human, but does not have to be), but spiritually/in their soul/heart, identify as a different one. one physically identifies with a certain species or thing, but they view their spirit/soul/heart as being something different. it can be described in this way- one envisions their body as species/thing A, but their spirit/soul/heart as species/thing B. Your soul is the manifestation of one thing, while your physical body is a manifestation of another.

alternatively, otherspirit can describe when one physically and spiritually identifies as the same thing, but they feel a much greater connection to the spiritual/soul/heart aspect of their identity or place greater emphasis on it.

as an example- i fully physically identify as human. i am comfortable with my human identity on a physical level, but i envision my spirit as that of a raven’s spirit. i am a ravenspirited human.

This term is NOT related to the term “spirit animal”. “Spirit animal” is a culturally appropriative term that misunderstands, makes light of, tokenizes, and often fetishizes the cultures of Indigenous people around the world, but especially Native Americans and First Nations people (you can read more about this here, here, and here ). This term is not at all about appropriating important concepts from Indigenous cultures, and is just in reference to personal identity. It is about personal identification of one’s spirit/soul/heart as something, not taking others’ cultures and using them for fun. As such, please do NOT use the term “spirit animal” to describe your identification with this term. Instead of saying “(x) is my spirit animal”, say “(x) is my spirittype”. If I see anybody using this term to disrespect Native people and cultures, I will not hesitate to correct you, and I ask that if anyone else sees that, that they correct them as well.

Alterhuman terms:

Otherlink: someone who choses to identify as an inhuman creature for many reasons including coping.

Otherkin: someone who believes that they're not fully human and identifying as a inhuman fantasy/unreal based creature on a non-physical Level(mentally/spiritually).

Therian: someone that identifies as an inhuman creature that roams or once roamed the earth on a non-physical Level(mentally/spiritually).

Otherhearted: someone that feels a strong connection with a inhuman creature without feeling like they are that creature.

Othersoul: someone who believes that they have a soul of an inhuman creature but doesn't identify as that creature.

(I've never heard of the term Othersoul before so feel free to correct me)

what’s the diff between otherlink, otherkin, otherhearted, alterhuman, othersouled theiran and stuff? Like- someone said I’m otherlink cuz I in a way grew to kinda wanna be my OC, but in a way, it isn’t exactly wanting to be my OC now, it’s just- it feels like me…

otherlink is similar to copinglink in that it refers to a person who has voluntarily chosen a nonhuman identity, but for reasons other than coping !! ^-^

otherhearted is a term that describes someone who feels a strong connection to a non-human species !! >w<

alterhuman is a term that refers to someone who does not fit the traditional standard of what is considered human, and/or does not identify as human !! (*＾＾*)//

othersoul is another term for otherkin !! (✪ω✪)/

Who Is Maia Orthas?

What better way to start this blog than with the main character?

Maia Sorya Orthas is an 18-year-old rabbit faunan. Faunans are humanoids with animal features that I often describe as being at the halfway point between Star Fox characters and anime cat girls. So Maia has the ears, nose, tail, and feet of a rabbit, but is otherwise human. The icon of this blog is actually a picture of Maia I made in Picrew!

She was born and raised in Stardrop City, Auron, which is basically fantasy Los Angeles.

However, Maia has... not quite a secret, but something she doesn't like sharing with others. Maia is an Othersoul, a person reincarnated from a world outside of Mageth. About 15% of faunans experience some form of past life memories, and it's theorized that many more who don't are also reincarnated. About 1% of that 15% are Othersouls like Maia.

And Maia's previous life... was not happy. I'm gonna put the rest under the cut because it's bad. (Why do I do this to my characters?) Trigger warning for narcissistic parents, control freak parents, suicide, death, disease, anti-vaxxers, and COVID-19! (Also a mention of sexual assault later down the line!)

In her previous life on Earth, she was known as Maya Wilson, daughter of Elise Wilson, a narcissistic control freak. Maya's older sister, Tara, committed suicide when Maya was 3 (Tara was 16). Maya had little autonomy, as everything was decided by her mother. She couldn't hang out with other kids unless her mom approved, a list that started off small and slowly shrunk over the years. By the time of her death at age 16, Maya was homeschooled by Elise and had no contact with anyone. She died of COVID-19 because Elise didn't believe in vaccines or lockdowns.

(Why be subtle when some points require a sledgehammer?)

Anyway, as she lay dying, Maya regretted being such a doormat to her mother (it's not like she had a choice in the matter, but such is the nature of guilt). This regret may have caused her to reincarnate as Maia Orthas.

Maia was born to Luluma Orthas née Sarala, a fox faunan, and Radion Orthas, a deer faunan. Interestingly, they too suffered from terrible families, but were able to escape and elope. Fate or coincidence? You decide.

Anyway, after regaining her past life memories at a young age (something she obviously needed therapy for) Maia decided to be the exact opposite of who she was as Maya and always stand up for justice. This directly led to her meeting her best friend, Kula Ramuba, a crocodile faunan who was being bullied for being a Reptilian in a mostly mammalian community. Kula and Maia soon became close friends.

As she grew up, Maia routinely stood for the underdog. The faculty at school knew her as "the girl who threw a chair at someone. Twice. In two separate incidents." Her principal introduced her to meditation and the religion of Makuism just to get her to calm down. On a more positive note, she got a medal for stopping a kidnapper at an amusement park (as well as free food for life at said amusement park).

Maia joined an underground parkour group that taught her how to use alteration magic, which she uses to better navigate the environment. Her specific specialty is in freezing water. She also learned balicca, a sort of ballet-like martial art.

As a high schooler, she became a street vigilante called Freezer Burn, as she idolized Stardrop City's most famous vigilante, Silver Shadow. She managed to impress Silver Shadow and eventually became his apprentice... only to turn him in for sexual assault several months later. She was heartbroken, but the people of Stardrop City stood by her for her courage in turning in her mentor.

And thankfully, she got a new, more admirable mentor soon enough: Kula's mother, Lukai Ramuba. Lukai and her husband Koros were members of the Family, a traveling vigilante group, but had temporarily retired to raise their daughter. Between Maia's skills in beating people up and Kula's hacking skills, the Family was very interested in the two girls.

And once they graduate from public school, well, that's when things truly begin.

Character Introduction: Tamsin

Picture credit: not available, only pages with reposts can be found  Tamsin fa Okkut, daughter to Lona and Everk fa Okkut, was born in the depths of Hiramp. While she grew up it was like a huge playground to her until she ran into an Ampaster when she was about nine years old and breaks out in a panic attack now whenever she sees a spider. Since she was a teenager she wanted to be a bard and started to learn the art from one of the dwarven bards at Hiramp. When she couldn’t hide anymore how she really was Tamsin got exiled from Hiramp for being an Othersoul, a person who was born in the wrong body. Since that day she disliked the dwarven tattoos and used the exile as a chance to be her real self. Despite her calm and relaxing aura and her rather introvert character, she turns into a different person when she plays the lute and sings. At these moments she is free and does what she loves the most. Often she even gets lost in the music. She was lucky to meet Orianna three years into her exile in Vyma in the Summerlands and became friends with her. Tamsin knows that Orianna is an assassin and doesn’t care as long as Orianna doesn’t play people again which is the only thing that makes Tamsin agitated. She is afraid that one day the elf’s games will kill them. Born a dwarf boy she learned to fight with a sword and still wears a short one-handed sword with her. She was forced to use it once but usually Orianna steps in before things go south. Tamsin also owns the elf a lot when it comes to being her true self.

State of FromFiction 2020

It's been 13 months since my last post here, saying I was closing shop. In that time, a few things have happened, the two most important being:

Tumblr, while decaying terribly, has failed to completely die

A kin community has failed to really develop anywhere else that’s better.

So I guess what I’m saying is that I’m coming back. Wading back into the cesspool that is tumblr to once again answer questions and hold a larger dialogue on the mystery that is our collective fictionkin identity.

Larger/more relevant posts will be mirrored on my website Fromfiction.net which also has a complete archive of the blog up to now, and copies of earlier essays from previous iterations of the site, as well as essays and discussions from other community members that I trust.

If you’re interested in a seriously, 18+ active discord community comprising discussion on fictionkin, soulbonding, spirutually derived plurality and similar topics I suggest you check out the Othersouls Network https://othersoulsondiscord.tumblr.com/ which is where I have been hanging out this last year.

Here’s to the new year, and to all of us fictionkin heading into the future. This is officially my 14th year of involvement in the fictionkin community, and I intend to make it a good one.
