cersei has spoken glowingly of jaime to others--to ned, to tyrion, to sansa, and (unthinkingly) to tommen and margaery plus everyone else around them that day--but iirc, this is the closest we've ever seen to her praising jaime in person. the first and only time she can't help but compliment jaime onpage to his face is by comparing him to their unlamented evil, abusive father. this can be seen as further proof that she doesn't only value him as her sword arm, an extension of herself as her male avatar. i imagine this is what she wanted of jaime as hand of the king, with herself still holding the reins of power as regent but jaime providing valuable advice and support. and man, that just makes me think of how in a different world she and tyrion would've been the ultimate lannister power couple.

Okay, so I recently read The Imperial Uncle (Huang Shu) by Da Feng Gua Guo from Peach Flower House and I really loved it??? It's first person pov, mlm, about the Emperor's uncle Jing Chengjun, who is mistrusted by everyone simply because of who his parents were and his position, and so he's basically given up on trying to convince people that he's actually a nice, decent person without ulterior motives. He's super trapped by his position, and there's so much he can't say and do, and he's also a hopeless romantic, like, from his own mouth all he really wants is to sleep beside and wake up next to someone who actually gives a shit about him, and even that is basically out of reach in his life. Like, the book starts with his wife (who he has never once had sex with) storming into a meeting he's having and announcing he's a cuckold and she's pregnant.

But also, this poor bastard really thinks he knows what's going on and his very smart. Very unreliable narrator. He's actually kinda a hilarious, impulsive himbo. But the TL:DR is that his loneliness and isolation and the extent to which he's politically trapped routinely lead him to make absolutely terrible decisions.

E. Danglar's translation is absolutely gorgeous, too, and... idk, if you love political plots, melodramatic idiot main characters, a dose of pining, and a slow burn that eventually pays off, come take a look??? (some people think it's a love triangle??? idk, I never really got that vibe, I never felt it was really in doubt which of the two potential dudes he'd end up with, but maybe I only feel that way because I got it right, lmao).

Anyway, I can't stop thinking about how these two idiots end up finally finding each other and getting together, and I have an entire AU in my head (a modern corporate one) and part of another (canon divergent from like a decade before the book starts), and I just want people to love this book as much as I did and scream with me about it.

#unforth rambles #da feng gua guo #the imperial uncle #huang shu #the first au is jing chengjun and li ransi meet and have a fling during a vacation #and then find out that they work for the same company #hijinks ensue #the other is an au that starts with what if jing chengjun's father had actually been accused and convicted of treason #whether he was guilty or not #and his family was sentenced to death #but because jing chengjun is a youth he is instead made into a eunuch and forced into servitude to the imperial family #i know it's a stretch that someone of his stature would be treated that way instead of killed or sold off as a slave #i just don't care #anyway he's given awful jobs at first and they leave him weak and sickly but eventually it because clear he really isn't a threat #and he's allowed to help raise the princes in the next generation including the crown prince #and he also gets to know the other young people around the palace but as a subservient slightly older person #instead of as their elder of higher rank #and then liu tongyi is like okay so everyone thinks you're useless do you want to be a spy for me and help me uncover treason #and he's like FUCK YEAH #and love unfolds from there ofc

Jake: "Oh, thanks!" (Basic reply but obviously appreciative, smiling at them)

Hailey: "Oh, um, thank you. That's really nice of you." (A little taken off-guard, but smiles once she realizes they mean it)

Drew: "What? Thanks, I guess?" (Has no idea how to respond, will also add that he has a girlfriend if they seem too flirty)

Daisy: "Aww, thank you, that's really sweet! You look pretty today, too!" (Appreciates it but is also legally required to compliment them back)

Lia: "Huh? Oh, thanks! I actually tried this new mascara today, maybe that's why. It's called--" (Engages in friendly talk with them, flattered)

Zoey: "Yeah, I know!" (Genuine confidence; she knows she's pretty but likes when people point it out)

Liam: "Yeah, I know." (Fake confidence; clearly surprised and trying not to seem flustered (failing immensely))

Henry: "Haha, very funny. >:( ...WAIT YOU'RE SERIOUS??? Oh, well that makes sense, too." (Will assume they're joking until told otherwise, but afterwards he looks quite proud of himself (He will also warn them his heart is reserved for Lia))

Maria: "Oh, thanks." (Smiles, clearly already knows this but doesn't mind being reminded of it)

Stacy: "Thank you so much! I really like your bracelets, where'd you get them?" (Very flattered, wants to return the favor and compliments them about something she sees them wearing)

Milly: "...Oh, uh, thanks?" (Initially looks angry before realizing they aren't joking or making fun of her, thanks them a bit confusedly) (If they do it again after that, she will be ready this time and answer more confidently about how yeah, she does look awesome today)

Zander: "I have a boyfriend." (Once they clear up that they didn't mean it like that, he will be very appreciative and most likely tell them about how cool it is that they get his style, and that they are one of few people he respects at this school)

Luke: (Zander tells them Luke has a boyfriend before he can say anything /j) (No, but seriously, Luke thanks them and reacts similarly to Stacy, asking about something they're wearing so they can feel pretty too)

Sean: "Oh--Thank you! That's really nice of you. How are things going?" (Initially surprised but very flattered, strikes up a conversation to get to know them better/how they're doing)

Elliot: "Oh, um, thank you. I don't really know what to say...You look pretty, too!" (He gives them a nervous thumbs up, regrets that, then smiles at them) (He clearly does appreciate it, but doesn't know how to respond)

Sadie: "...Oh. Thank you, that's really nice...You look nice, too." (In her shock forgets to respond, before smiling and thanking them, then deciding to compliment them back, since she knows that's what Daisy does)

#I feel like not a lot of people outside of the pikship server is going to understand this oc so I’m gonna explain her in the tags #so Saph here is half kyoan #kyoans are based on the concept of (cont cause character limit)#what if a leafling’s four eyes were naturally occurring in a starfolk species #most have two eyes anyways so four eyes are more like a rare desired genetic trait #their other traits include having red slitted eyes that glow like pnf-404 creatures at night(cont)#being roughly twice the height of the average starfolk which is why Saph is so huge compared to most of the characters in the collab(cont)#their tolerance to oxygen is greater than even that of a Koppaite’s #they can handle about half the amount of oxygen of PNF-404’s atmosphere(cont)#and they’re strict carnivores #about the strict carnivore part they developed a hunger for starfolk flesh and blood over time #so they had a history of terrorizing other planets until a group overthrew their government and made starfolk hunting illegal #Saph is among those who’s against starfolk hunting #their one weakness is that they will burn in sunlight #their home planet Kyo revolves around a red star and they built their settlements underground to survive the planet’s aggressive wildlife #so they developed a low sunlight tolerance because of that #pikmin #pikmin oc

#HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO ASSESS RELATIVE POWER DIFFERENCES UNDER THESE CONDITIONS #i understand and appreciate the narrative reasoning for not going into detail about psychic powers #(including things like in universe classifications)#and because of the pacing and purpose of the story you know the protagonists will win #but it’s like. what abt ‘natural’ espers #bc the awakening lab group are all ’naturals’ as in ‘not artificial espers’#but their powers (other than clairvoyance girl’s) are all significantly weak #which makes me think it’s a baseline- most espers (natural or artificial) likely have that power level- and so never discover any powers #there’s also the specialties to deal with- most espers we see are limited in the scope of their powers and only really do 1 or 2 things #which is a rule we see all the way up in claw’s super 5 #main exceptions seem to be mob teru and serizawa (ritsu does NOT count here- we only really see him doing telekinesis and barriers afaik)#(and besides. ritsu doesn’t seem to be able to be strong enough to lift himself firmly cementing him as weakest non-reigen protag)#(also not counting toichiro here- it looks to me like he just has a LOT of raw power and a Lot of specialties)#sorry. my demons #mp100
