Wow.

When we watched the first episode (both halves) of Over the Garden Wall last night, my husband and I had this exchange:

"So the townspeople are skeletons dressing up in the pumpkins and stuff?"

"Yeah."

"Creepy."

Which doesn't sound like much, I know, but something about that struck me:

People's first impressions probably ARE that it's creepy.

And I totally forgot that was a thing.

Like, for me, I don't even really see it as creepy anymore? It's literally just things like "a place for the placeless", "a rest for the lost", or "the complete inverse of the Beast" to me. Not "here's where the undead dress up as jack-o-lanterns".

To me, it's "Come Ye Thankful People Come", not "Come Wayward Souls" (even though we hear the tune played there).

I look at it and see concepts like "harvest" and "peace", and that's why I like Pottsfield.

But most people, on first glance, see concepts like "creepy" and "morbid", and that's why they like (or dislike) Pottsfield.

And that's just so foreign to me at this point, I had to stop and think about it.

Over the past couple weeks me and dad have been painting wooden cutouts of residents from pottsfield from over the garden wall

I absolutely love this show it’s tradition to watch it every October and this was such a fun project to get to do. Was definitely a lot of work and I’m glad we’re done but I’m so happy with it!!!!

Yesterday felt like the first real day of fall, so I spent last night making this :) Making art has been stressful for me lately with how long it takes and also working, but this art style is just nice.

As usual, I put it up on my shop with my other OTGW art <3

Slight spoilers from my version of the Pottsfield episode! Specifically in "Chapter 3: The Goodman and the Great Pumpkin".

“So,” chuckled Enoch, a sort of delight in his deep, drawling voice, “the Goodman has returned to Pottsfield.”

“Yes, great one,” was the Woodsman’s simple reply. He sounded solemn to Wirt, far more solemn even than usual. And yet, somehow, not gloomy.

“Hmm-hmm, that’s fine! Now our little tradition, kept all these many years, can continue. Now that you’ve gathered in your harvest for the winter, you’ve come to help us reap our own.” The great head seemed to nod, ever grinning. “That’s very fine.”

...“Only,” said the worn voice, scattering speculations, “I have not gathered in.”

“Oh?”

The Woodsman took a breath. “Not yet.” As the people began to murmur again, he held out his hand behind him, towards Wirt and Greg. “I found these children before I could complete it.”

Okay, guys, lemme just say, I love Pottsfield and Enoch and everything about them. And I also absolutely love the Woodsman, so combined? I don't know, but it was delightful to write. And draw!

(I love the dynamic between these two so much, guys)

INKTOBER 2023 - "PATH"

An Over The Garden Wall traditionally inked piece on watercolor paper, tis the season and all that. Hadn't done a marker centric illustration in a while, so this was a fun challenge.
