#ossan's love thai remake

I've never done a post on Ossan because it's one of the heritage BLs that if you know it, you've watched it, or you tried it and bounced HARD.

For my sins, I've watched them all.

It's just really old-fashioned super slapstick JBL that was wildly popular in Japan, but misses the mark for me on EVERY level.

I don't like sound effect panto slapstick stuff in general (let alone BL),

it's very awkward in the "romance" arena, like it never feels like they actually really like each other let alone love (or want to sleep with),

there's tons of secondhand embarrassment and cringe,

also blushing maiden and overt disinterest even repulsion around sex,

consequently it's very low heat,

there's a terrible love triangle,

workplace harassment is played for laughs,

and I don't find any of the actors attractive.

I thought the Hong Kong remake was slightly better but still this story is just NOT my thing. I honestly don't see how it could have much global appeal.

I mean EarthMix and Thailand turning is serious could be good, but I doubt they will do that. If they stick to the original chaos monkey ordinary bottom bullshizz (which is more Thailand's style) I fail to see how even EarthMix can save it. Especially Earth, comedy is NOT his strong suit.

New main couple in an idol romance about a boy who dances good and a food stand vendor. Other side of the tracks, grumpy/sunshine pair who fall deeply in love but, of course, to become an idol baby boy can't date. Boyband but from GMMTV? Control your singing and I'm game.

AllThis Entertainment producing a very pulp offering for GMMTV with new pair GreatInn doing high heat boxer meets surgeon. It features a one night stand, fake relationship, and all the cheesiest of tropes. Also features Drake, Podd, and Thor+ pretty boy (be still my heart). This is totally my kind of BL even if it actually isn't GMMTV's style of BL, so I'm intrigued.

Note: Most of the Only Friends cast was sparse in these trailers. I think they were busy filming at the time these trailers were being cut, and that's why we see so little of them.

The styling for the characters is completely wrong?? Like completely. I am flummoxed. I am perplexed. I am getting out my shovel to dig a pit to lower my expectations into. They were already on the ground but that was clearly not low enough.

P'Jojo said somewhere that he’d like to do a domestic cutesy BL, please give the man what he wants. As a general rule, GMMTV should just let Jojo do whatever Jojo wants to do, period.

P’Aof once said in a interview that he would like to work with actors he hasn’t work with yet and that among gmmtv he hadn’t had the chance to work with Gun (or Krist) soooooooooo this could be the year is what I’m saying.

PLEASE give me something by the BMF production team (P'Waa Waasuthep, who also directed The Gifted) because Be My Favorite is definitely one of my favorite series, it was perfect.

I'm going to be real, this seemed really boring. I feel like I'll probably watch anyway, but only bc i have nothing better to do. Also, I've been seeing people say that pondphuwin are the main leads of the cast, but it honestly feels like winnysatang also have an equal position in the trailer. but we'll see.

this was okay, i like the concept. didn't feel all that excited though, but the cast is pretty stacked. also kaphook lesbian??? they gained points for that fr, give the casting director a raise.

no <3 ok i love ossan's love (both the japanese version and the hong kong version) and i am definitely open to a thai adaptation -- i just am not confident in how well earthmix can pull off the characters, whichever ones they play. there's a lot of physical comedy and the main character in both adaptations was...very Expressive. so idk how this is gonna go.

I am going to watch and hope they do justice to the manga (because this is an adaptation of the manga and not the show). The trailer felt very lackluster imo. I think the characters would have been a better fit if fourth and gemini switched roles, but i am going to wait and see for this one. The one I’m most looking forward to is probably Boun’s Vampire project, have they decided an actual name for this one yet? Anyway, I’m mostly looking forward to it because of how important it has been to Boun and how Prem decided to continue acting specifically because of this project.

Dreading is probably the KristSingto one, I don’t even know its name tbh. I just dislike Krusty and having him on my timeline is just blech.

Skipping, the Thai remake of Ossan’s Love. I really love EarthMix, but I disliked the original Japanese version and I really don’t think the over the top humour will work with the Thai version, so far it’s just making them all look like idiots. Oassan’s Love’s humour and over the top reactions really only work well in anime, I don’t think it should’ve had a live action adaptation at all.

I mean, I'm gonna be honest, they might offer these shows to international fans but that doesn't meant hat we are the main audience or even their primary goal. I mean that. Just in general.

But especially with Japan. Japan does not give a fuck about an international audience. Getting one is entirely just a Thing That Happens to them sometimes. @absolutebl has, and can, explained this in much more detail than I can.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

Am I upset that they aired two episodes before realizing the issue? A bit, yeah. Am I surprised? No. Do I expect the same issue for the others? Eh, questionable. My Love Mix Up is already internationally available on Viki that has connections to GMMTV so I feel like we're more likely to be able to see the show more easily while Cherry Magic's international IP looks different and has no direct connection to GMMTV.

I have no idea why you're happy about this but, I mean, sure? Go for it. It was a cute remake, I like the idea f remaking it more of the manga in it and giving us a different cultural view on an interesting story and I do plan on trying to find it the old fashioned pirate way until they manage to figure out the international rights (if they ever do).

But also, like... yeah. These companies work for a profit? That's... that's what they do. They make a profit! If it weren't for a profit we wouldn't get most of the shows we get. Yes, some are made as passion projects but even those are typically also made in the hopes of making some money.

GMMTV wants to make money and so they want to make BL and, luckily, this works in our favor. If BL stops making money then it stops getting made. If this struggle with Cherry Magic loses them money, they'll look to change things in the other two adaptations.

But if this still makes money? Well, they'll still try their best but they do need to make money.

They cared enough to make the show and try to release it internationally but struggled and, you know what, we'll see what happens. I hope they can make all their remakes, honestly. I'd love to see them.

So now that Cherry Magic is over, and I think we can agree that it was great, how are you feeling about the next Japanese adaptations? Both Kieta Hatsukoi and Ossan's Love.

I must admit that I'm slightly more optimistic than I was before, but still cautiously.

oh boy do I have thoughts on this one.

I'm optimistic about both (at completely different levels) but pessimistic about distribution.

I haven't had to go gray to access any BL of note in years. And I'm a little annoyed that Cherry Magic Thailand forced me to break my law abiding streak. (To be fair, I was already there for Build Up. But, my annoyance stands.)

If we are very lucky, GMMTV is taking down some of their heavy hitters from YouTube rn because they've struck a distribution deal with Vicki. And that deal might also include first rights global release for those Japanese adaptations. Because Vicki is a Japanese based company, I'm hoping they can swing global distribution for GMMTV that handles Japan's wicked IP laws.

Also Viki currently handles global distribution for the original live actions of Ossen and MLM, so... Maybe on the Japanese end they can fold these Thai versions into the contracts for those IPs (which would be with the original creators and already negotiated). Japan is much more comfortable with that kind of thing, than entirely new contracts.

That said, I think if GMMTV really wants to capitalize on this new JBL remake relationship, they should go to the well on yaoi and pick up some older manga that have never been adapted. Rather than trying to remake what's already be been turned into live action by Japan. They would probably have fewer legal struggles that way.

But nobody listens to me in this matter.

So far as the Thai remakes themselves are concerned?

I was already very optimistic about My Love Mixup.

I enjoyed the original, but I think this is exactly the kind of content that Thailand does better in a longer form with added chemistry then Japan. (Bite me, they do.)

And I think Gemini & Forth are ideally cast.

As for Ossen's Love, I loathe that franchise. I really do.

I'm also not a huge EarthMix stan (witness my abject hatred of that body swap road trip nonsense they did, what was it called, oh yeah, Cupid's Last Wish). So this is not necessarily a win on casting for me, either. (Can Earth even DO comedy?)

But I was so impressed by Cherry Magic Th (and so doubtful about that casting too, initially), that I will actually watch Thailand's version of Ossen.

At least to start.

I'll have my judgy hat on the entire time, tho.

Also, with the distribution issues of Cherry Magic, will GMMTV still green light this production at all? I mean it's massive suck cost for them, if they also spend their biggest cash cow pair on something that can't get international distribution. Unless I'm right about that Viki deal... Or unless EarthMix is worth the money even if they only get Thailand. (They are HUGE there, so maybe the number work out.)

The original Ossan’s Love was the first thing I ever watched with the bestie, back at the beginning of 2017. We’d been talking ships together for a couple months as well as BL manga, and this one-off drama came up and we decided to try watching it together.

So we pulled it up on rabit (the precursor to watch2gether, also the bane of my existence), and after struggling with the captcha for a good twenty minutes (BANE OF MY EXISTENCE), we finally got it going. It was nice to have the little chatbox to talk while the show was playing, even tho a lot of our reactions were just “LOL” and “oh my GOD” and “AHDJFJF.” As one does.

Anyways, about thirty minutes go by, we’re a little more than halfway through, and while both of us are happily typing away, a complete stranger suddenly goes “lol” in the chat

AND BOTH OF US GO DEAD SILENT FOR A FULL MINUTE WHILE WE PROCESS THAT SOMEONE ELSE WAS IN THE ROOM

and then bestie booted them and switched the stream over to private for real this time

RIP to whoever it was in that room who seemed to be enjoying themselves and may or may not have ever been able to finish watching Ossan’s Love. I hope you found it again someday, random stranger, even if you gave me a heart attack.

Anyways it’s pretty nostalgic to be watching Ossan’s Love Returns with my bestie. We’ve watched just about every entry in the franchise together, with the exception of the HK remake (which I’m watching on my own, at a snail’s pace). We’ll probably watch the Thai remake together because we love EarthMix. And when we’re old and gray I hope we’ll get to watch Ossan’s Love in Space together too (y’all know it’s gonna get there eventually, they already did a fucking airplane AU).

I’m glad more ppl are getting into OL because it’s such a wacky and lovely series, and it will always be near and dear to my heart. 🥺

it's interesting that gmmtv trusted Au with both their Japanese remakes for next near. My love mix up with Geminifourth the new huge stars and ossans love with the experienced and popular earthmix. hopefully he can deliver for both

Despite my feelings about the choices in projects to adapt and casting, Au has earned our respect as a creator in the BL space. I believe Au will lead a good Thai adaptation of the work. I am primarily concerned about what parts of the stories that mattered to me won't translate over since Thai BL rarely cares for those things that are most important to me in Japanese BL.
