Giving Tuesday – 2025 Open Hardware Summit #GivingTuesday 📅🛠️🌍
In 2025, the Open Hardware summit will be in Edinburgh, Scotland, May 30-31. The Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA) hosts the summit. OSHWA is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity that certifies open-source hardware designs and shares data about the growing community.
Here is their pitch for the 2025 Open Hardware Summit, where Adafruit is a sponsor again!
"The Open Hardware Summit is the only conference dedicated to discussing Open Source Hardware. Open Source Hardware is a community-focused method of creating where we share knowledge openly, welcome collaboration, and frequently create together. The Open Hardware summit is a place to compare notes, see the state of the art, and spend some time talking about where the open source movement is headed. The summit often contains workshops, talks, connections, mentorship.
If you haven't yet, please consider sponsoring the 2025 Open Hardware Summit again this year: https://2025.oshwa.org/sponsor/. We are headed to Scotland this year and hope you'll join us. Your funding always allows us to put on a stellar event that people rave about. There are new levels and added headline sponsor levels this year.
Your support enables OSHWA to continue its mission of supporting the open source hardware community. You can become a member or donate financially to help keep their programs going."

MUSIC MONDAY PLAYLIST: Janai’s Picks
I like to call these songs adhesives. They are the songs that stick. Some perennial tunes, and some new tunes that have found their way into my daily rotation.
Oshwa – “Ultraflourescent” – Is it because I find beauty in the ultrafluorescent? I find truth in the most common of chemicals? I find nausea in the routine? I like my muscles taut and tried? I wanna go out every night? Wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face?  I'm faithfully human being.
I was immediately drawn to the raw lyrics and the gruff voice backing them. Alicia Walter of the band Oshwa sheds light on what makes her a real human in this song in a playful and sly manner. It’s a declaration of emergence – saying, “Hello! This is me, take me as I am.” The revelation of innate quirks and flaws that make you who you are is formidable, but easily subjugated with the help of this song.
Modest Mouse – “Gravity Rides Everything” – A gentle reminder that all is well and gravity keeps us grounded…literally.
Sufjan Stevens – “Come On! Feel The Illinoise!” – I was one of those kids who detested all church youth group activities or trips. I only started to warm up to the idea when I reached high school and the trips had much more of a grand appeal. We drove to Chicago in the summer of 2012.  Before any big trip, we were all given matching t-shirts to function as a group identifier. This trip’s shirt had “Come on feel the Illinoise” in big, bold, orange letters surrounded by the Illinois state outline. This was my first band tee, a gateway tee if you will, that opened to the music of Sufjan and some of my other favorite artists and bands to this day. I strongly suggest a preliminary listen of the album Ilinois during a 12-hour drive to Chicago.
Waxahatchee – “Recite Remorse” – I’ll ashamedly admit that this is the first song by Waxahatchee that caught my ears. But WOW, it has really caught my ears.
Talking Heads - “This Must Be The Place” – CLASSIC. This is the ultimate feel good song. I love this song so much; I have five different covers saved in my library. Is there a strand of happiness in you if this song isn’t in your top 20 somewhere?
San Fermin – “Oceanica” – It was my first week as an intern and one of my initiating tasks was to research upcoming bands set to play at the Club. One of the upcoming bands was San Fermin. I wasn’t completely engrossed by their music at first, but it didn’t take long for them to instill. I eventually fell in love with the orchestration under a pair of guttural and delicate voices. Not seeing them at the 9:30 Club in May was regrettable and I’m letting everyone know it.
Obliques – “Lightweight” – The catchy riff that keeps me involuntarily dancing in the bathroom mirror.
Huffamoose – “James” – Both nostalgic and consistent.  This song has secured itself in my top 10 since 1999.  Aged three years old in the back of my dad’s van for a three hour trip to our campground; an annual summer trip.  It was a large van with no secured seats in the back; just my two brothers and I sprawled out on the floor on a few layers of blankets. This album must’ve played two times over during the trip, and many more times throughout my childhood. The song has an innocent and loving nature, and was more than appropriate for a drive towards the mountains.
Valley Queen – “In My Place” – One of those situations where you go to a show blindsided, only wanting to see the headliner. This was the case for the Laura Marling show at the Club back in May. Valley Queen opened the show and I was an immediate fan. Ever since that night, I can’t get enough of her powerful and resonant voice.
Sun Club - “Tropicoller Lease” – I saw Sun Club with Ra Ra Riot and PWR BTTM in 2016.  Another case when I didn’t know much about the openers and wasn’t expecting them to be the takeaway from the show, but Sun Club certainly was. This song, like most of their songs, is hardly discernable. It’s the type of music you listen to without a care in the world, when you have nothing to lose, and just want to dance freakishly.

Thelio Mega: The World’s Smallest Quad-GPU Deep Learning System
Tumblr media
Most quad-GPU workstations on the market right now use a generic chassis. It works if you want something just for storing components, but what you get is a machine that runs hot and slows down your system. That’s where Thelio Mega comes in.
All About Thermals We’ve engineered Thelio Mega to ensure your top-line components perform to their fullest potential. Its thermals are actually two separate systems, as we found it more effective to divide and conquer. Unique airflows keep heat generated by the CPU and GPU from mixing, exhaust air effectively, and prevent throttling.
Heat builds up quickly when you have up to 4 NVIDIA Quadro RTX GPUs stacked atop one another. Rather than use a single vent to cool the entire system, Thelio Mega uses intake fans on the bottom and side panels to blow cool air directly onto your GPUs. Everything down to the GPU brace has been tested for maximum thermal efficiency. The result is consistent access to every last core of performance in your system.
Meanwhile, a separate duct isolates the airflow to your CPU. A dedicated intake vent on the side panel directs cool air towards the heat sink. In what’s called a closed-loop phase change, actuating fluid evaporates into a gas, drawing thermal energy away from the CPU and towards the heat sink. The hot air then exits via the exhaust port. The process yields performance similar to if your components were sitting on a test bench.
Tumblr media
We tested a wide variety of fan sizes and alignments, sometimes adjusting position by only a couple millimeters, until we arrived at the most effective solution. Large 140mm fans move air more effectively at a lower RPM, producing quieter acoustics. The Thelio IO board allows your operating system to monitor the temperature of your GPUs and adjust fan speeds for intensive computing.
The Components
Send this shopping list straight to your purchasing manager: Thelio Mega maxes out at 4 NVIDIA Quadro GPUs, 128 threads on an AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPU, 256GB of memory (including 128GB ECC memory), 96TB of storage (including 32TB NVMe storage), and Dual 10GB Ethernet ports, which operate at speeds 10 times faster than the speed of a standard Ethernet port.
Serviceability
Like all Thelio desktops, Thelio Mega is built to be expandable, repairable, and convenient. The system is pre-wired for upgrades. Screws for 2.5” storage drives are neatly tucked away in the GPU duct panel. When you’re in need of additional compute firepower, there’s room to spare.

A Quick and Dirty Guide to Open Source Hardware Licensing*
One of the issues that continues to vex the open source hardware community is licensing.  The reason for this is simple: licensing in open source hardware is hard.  From an IP standpoint, open source software is basically a single blob of stuff comprehensively covered by a single copyright.  That means you can pick a single copyright license and be done.
Open source hardware isn’t that easy. It is actually a mix of a bunch of different elements covered by a bunch of different types of IP.  That means that you are probably going to need to pick a few types of licenses for a few different parts of your hardware.  OSHWA is working on building a tool to make this easier to figure out, but in the meantime I wanted to throw up a quick post setting up a bit of a framework.  This framework is largely based on the work that Ryan Lawson and Adam Alperowicz did as students at the NYU Technology Law and Policy Clinic, although all errors are entirely mine.
When you are thinking about licensing your hardware, there are at least four parts that might be involved. That doesn’t mean that every piece of hardware has all four, but at a minimum you should take the time to cross it off the list if it is appropriate.
Hardware.  These are the physical elements of your hardware.  This might be protected by a combination of nothing, copyright, and patent.  If it is nothing, you don’t need to worry about a license. If it is copyright, you should be looking at Creative Commons licenses (note that licenses with Non-Commercial restrictions are not compatible with the open source hardware definition).  If it is patent, things get a bit more complicated.  The good news is that you don’t just back into a patent. If you hardware is protected by a patent it is because you paid a lot of money to acquire that patent.  Talk to the lawyer who got you your patent about licensing options.  Not sure what to do?  If the CC disclaim and request option existed that would be best.  Until then, unless your hardware includes a lot of artistic or decorative elements you can probably skip this.
Documentation.  This is covered by copyright.  It is a required part of the open source hardware definition. Pick a Creative Commons license and apply it to the documentation.  That will let other people make copies of your documentation.
Software.  This is also covered by copyright.  There are many copyright licenses written precisely for software.  Pick an OSI-compliant license and apply it to your software.
Branding.  The name of your hardware can be protected by trademark. If you have a trademark you probably do not want to causally license it, because your trademark tells people “this version of X comes from me.”  Fortunately not licensing your trademark is totally allowed under the open source hardware definition. In fact, not offering blanket licenses on your trademark is part of what makes open source hardware work because it allows other people to build on your hardware without suggesting that you are responsible for whatever they put out in the world.
And that’s it.  Quick and dirty.  Wherever you are posting your licensing and documentation, it might make sense to break out the various licenses.  You know, something like this:
Documentation: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0
Software: MIT
(note the absence of a hardware license because this imaginary piece of hardware does not have any protectable elements in the physical hardware. I also didn’t license the imaginary trademark that is connected to the imaginary hardware.)
Thoughts, questions, or corrections?  Hit me up. Want more?  Keep an eye on OSHWA, where we are working to build out a much less dirty (but if appropriate to the use just as quick) version in the coming months.
*This title is not a lie. This guide is quick and it is dirty. That means that it doesn’t contemplate every possible situation, so there are plenty of right ways to do open source hardware licensing that are not listed.  That also means that it is full of gross generalizations that may not apply to you.  That also also means that it is not intended to substitute for legal advice.  If you are thinking seriously about this issue for your own hardware, it may be worth talking to a lawyer who is your lawyer about how licensing impacts your hardware.
