The moment she grew out of being a cute kid, people stopped paying attention to her and turned their backs on her. She took it as sign that she's not a child anymore, I'm assuming she did this even in middle school. It makes me sad for her

I just finished the first episode of Oshi no Ko, and holy shit. It was like a wholeass movie /positive

Finished s1 of Oshi No Ko, and I'm telling all of you to see it if you can.

It's doing a pretty good job of giving a critical eye to the entertainment industry (pop idols, child acting, reality shows, general acting, etc.) - both good and bad - and it's doing a fairly good job of it.

Understandably, this does mean it tackles some rough subjects. Episode 6 is particularly rough (and Episode 7 has the same trigger warnings as it deals with the aftermath).

It's also very focused on its theme of what it's calling the lie of being a celebrity in the entertainment industry - which is more about the construction of the image that is being sold as a consumer product vs. the person behind the celebrity image, with a particular focus on the idea that as a celebrity you NEED to craft a persona to survive, otherwise everything hits too close to the chest.

It's tackling this one from a lot of different angles and with a lot of different layers - Akane's arc in particular addresses this, but it also comes up in Ruby's actions on her path to becoming an idol (and wanting to tell the truth to her fans) as opposed to her twin brother Aqua's insistence that lies are there to protect you and thus you should lie about pretty much everything.

Like - this show starts in a way that feels like it's going to be fun and games gimmicky, but it takes itself very seriously with addressing these issues.

I'm interested in seeing what happens in s2.

aqua, watching ai bleed out, this person he's wanted nothing but to see be happy for years. aqua, a doctor in his past life, who could help her but he can't because he's just a kid now, all he can do is hold her. ruby, who watched and idolized ai through her terminal illness, who in this life was learning to have a life and freely move her body because of ai. ruby, stuck on the other side of the door, helpless, who has no idea what's happening, can't do anything, can't even hold ai as she dies. ai, so good at lying she doesn't even seem to be in pain, who thinks this is her own fault. ai, saying "i love you" to her kids for the first time, and the relief and joy on her face as she realizes she means it. JUST TEAR MY ENTIRE HEART OUT HOLY FUCK.

Liveblogging: Oshi no Ko

Ep 1:

Felt like I was watching a movie! (It was a movie)

Spoilers for ep 1 ahead:

Took a bit to get into, honestly, but I'm invested now! Really great story already, and that was just the prologue!

Some random thoughts:

Kids came out the womb already able to sit and crawl around, huh?

Already able to speak full sentences and walk at the age of one. Scrap that, already able to ACT IN A MOVIE at age one. I get it, they're not normal kids, but still.

Enough nitpicking. This story is so sad and very much purposefully so. You will feel sad because a sixteen year old is pregnant, a guy gets pushed off a cliff, a girl has cancer and seeing three funerals in 90 minutes.

Though was the guy's funeral real? Idk.

Great characters! Interested how everyone will be after ten years.

And another killer story! Two this season (with 'My Home Hero'). I'm gonna be sad :')

Definitely was not an overhyped anime!

Oshi no Ko Season 1 Rewatch Liveblog!

With news of season 2's air date on the horizon, I thought now would be the best time to revisit season 1 and dig into it the same way I do my chapter reviews! These will not be anime only friendly and are from the perspective of a manga reader looking back at the early material and, lbr, just another excuse for me to spend hundreds of words screaming crying throwing up etc about my wife

Tomorrow (Feb 1st), I'll be liveblogging episode 1 because it's my birthday and I do what I want so if you don't want to see my liveblog posts, be sure to blacklist #onk rewatch. I will also be tagging them as #onk anime spoilers if you're an anime only and don't want to be spoiled!

fall 2024 anime 0 very very briefly

this anime season was looking like pretty slim pickings at first, but suddenly it got interesting... admittedly mostly with sequels to stuff I was enjoying before. anyway i've barely started watching it all so this is less reviews and more just like a statement of intent but...

elusive samurai - just watched s1e1. way more of a gorefest than I knew to expect, but that's those wacky samurai for ya! a lot of fun playful meta stuff in the way it's presented, definitely curious where they're going with this. the colour design is absolutely fantastic, in a way that's far too rare these days. well-chosen flat colours > pile of digital filters any day of the week.

oshi no ko s2 - haven't started this yet but it's oshi no ko, and this stage-acting focused arc of the manga should be pretty fascinating in animation. MTBB dropped it but someone's doing some automated cleanup on the hidive subs, which ought to help a lot.

nier automata ver 1.1a - last season i liveblogged this up to episode 8 when the production fell apart and they had a huge hiatus. but they are back now! so I guess it's time to catch up on the last four eps of the prev season that I missed, and see where they take the new one. despite the severe production problems and many aesthetic choices that never really convinced me, this show has managed to hit the NieR vibe more than I first expected. I look forward to seeing how they're gonna fuck with us this time around.

one upside of the hiatus is that there's now a complete fansub of the first season by a one-project group calling themselves [GLORY]. looks real nice, glad to see it get some proper love.

i'll have more to say once I've caught up a bit...

FINALLY we're doing something with the plot

Idk how to feel about Gorou honestly. Whatever he has going on with Sarina is definetly creepy, but atleast he doesn't seem to reciprocate...?

You see there's the problem. Ruby isn't able to let go of "Sarina" even if that's not who she is anymore. She's Ruby Hoshino now, and she has to learn to let go of the past.

It would make for SUCH an interesting arc, if only Aka was interested in developing Ruby as a character😮‍💨

Ok so ignoring the weird undertones I am SO HAPPY about this because it basically confirms what I've been thinking of from that one chapter with Aqua and Kana at the start of the manga.

Aqua isn't Gorou, he's developed past the man known as "Gorou". Gorou is dead, and this is something Ruby can't make peace with.

Actually, thinking of this right now, maybe the REASON Ruby can't let go of Sarina is because she was a child when she died. She wants to experience the life she never got to, pretending to be Sarina. And her brain was never fully developed in the first place, so i suppose she can't really start anew? Unlike Gorou, who lived a full life, to some extent.

Also AQUA CALLED HER HIS PRECIOUS LITTLE SISTER DON'T TALK TO ME I AM CRYING

Also yeah Aqua is an adolescent! Good to finally have proper confirmation that the thing from the incest chapter was an act to make Ruby happy.

Z-Z-Z-Zaku Bracket!!

It's like Power Rankings, but as a bracket!

So once upon a time, I had this silly idea that I'd whack together a janky bracket picker, fill it with shows, and use the wisdom of the crowds to determine the show of the year. Like fifteen people submitted brackets, so that fell over and sank into the swamp. I kept updating the thing every year even though I stopped running it as a contest, so it sank deeper, unloved and unmentioned, into the swamp. Then Tumblr set fire to Javascript in custom pages, and the charred remains sank into the swamp...

But the fourth one stayed up!

For funsies, you can fill out a bracket that's got all the shows I liveblogged that ended last year, plus popular stuff according to MyAnimeList to round out a field of 64. You can share bracket codes to view other people's picks, and if for some reason you still have codes from previous year's brackets, they should still work at the new link.

A quick look at the field:

Shibuya Region: What's left of the neighborhood hosts Block A, headlined by No. 1 overall seed Jujutsu Kaisen S2. Can Uncle From Another World, NieR 1.1a, or any other contenders stop Itadori Yuuji from steamrolling his way into the Final Four?

(Sorry ran out of space and have to make 2 asks) Anyway We left off last time with how you let popular culture and memes guide you with anime, what do you think the meme for evangelion would be? Get in the robot Shinji? Having watched the show I am not sure about that, well it's nothing like the "Nah, I'd win" of today. That said, do you have any interest in newer anime such as Jujitsu Kaisen from which that meme came from? I heard Oshi no Ko is hot as well, but it could end up like NGE for me..

I'll just cover the rest here since this second half goes in a different direction.

I think my favorite Eva memes are the 4kids! parody song, and this animation of Asuka to the son "I threw it on the ground".

I'M AN ADULT!

What's rewarding is that now I understand all the little references, like when she slam dunks Kaworu's severed head, or why Misato is so upset about her beer getting smacked out of her hand. Well, I mean, she likes beer, so I guess it's not rocket science. Still I like to have the context for this stuff.

I don't know or care if these are popular memes, but they struck me as memorable, even though I didn't know anything about the source material. And over time, it just seemed like I was doing myself a disservice by not watching the source material so I could engage with them more fully.

I don't have much interest in newer anime and manga. I'll be liveblogging Chainsaw Man in August, but that's been around for several years now. I kind of prefer to let these things age a little and see if they're worthy of my time.

Also, as JoJolion demonstrated, I'm not cut out to follow along with these things in a serialized format. I read up to Chapter 66 in 2017 and that was just fine, but I found it really difficult to keep up with the story as the new chapters were published. That's why I'm going over the whole thing all over again. So in hindsight, I probably should have just done it that way from the beginning.

As things currently stand, I think my anime bucket list is just Galaxy Express 999, Fist of the North Star, and Tenchi Muyo! GXP, which I never finished back in the 2000's. I'm probably overlooking something, but that's enough to keep me occupied for a while...
