HELLO 1970s! Super excited for the big names that will appear in both our winners and upsets over the next 10 years.
Starting off though we have (unheard of by me) Five Easy Pieces up against every war dad's favorite, Patton.
Patton is a war epic, so expect typical fighting scenes, drawn-out political discussions that may require more background knowledge than I care to admit, and high quality visuals on a large-scale budget.
But also note what makes it stand out: the focus on the brash Patton rather than just the war as a whole. And as Patton, George C. Scott makes the whole film. The opening scene in front of the flag (probably the most memorable part of the whole thing) sets up the rest of his performance. It's hard seeing him in any other role without thinking of Patton.
As for Five Easy Pieces, I can't tell you what to expect. While I was anticipating some sort of sappy, family drama, I was instead given 98 minutes of nothing? Jack Nicholson is stuck between his two lives, each with its own overbearing soundtrack to really nail down the parallels. He does a fine job, but I had no interest in any of the characters to even care! It feels like something a college student would write.
At the 43rd Academy Awards ceremony, Patton grabbed 7 Oscars from 10 nominations, leaving Five Easy Pieces with nothing.
Both films were listed on the National Board of Review Top 10 list, with Patton taking the top spot. George C. Scott and Karen Black both took home Golden Globe, NBR, and NYFCC awards for their performances.
I'm also adding insights to this decade see some of the averages in real time. On the January to December timeline for yearly releases, the average winner and upset is released late summer. The remaining three we've seen before - longer run time, bigger budget, and higher box office totals for winners. I've also added a quick reference for who's taking Best Film throughout the season and the Big 5.
Neither film was crowned top film at the Golden Globes or BAFTAs but have both since been inducted into the National Film Registry and the OFTA Hall of Fame. Patton also placed 89th on the AFI 100 Years...100 Movies (original list only).
Unofficial Review: Overwhelmingly not an upset. Five Easy Pieces was not good.

But one lesser-known fact is the lake sits on top of the Black-town, Oscarville.
Oscarville was burnt down in 1912 and more than a thousand residents were forced to flee following the allegations of rape.
Rob Edwards was arrested in September 1912 along with Earnest Knox and Oscar Daniel, both teenagers, all accused of raping and murdering a young white woman named Mae Crow.
Edwards was dragged out of jail, beaten with a crowbar, and then lynched from a telephone pole.
Daniel and Knox went to trial and were found guilty on the same day. The boys were sentenced to death by hanging.
After the trials and executions, white men, known as Night Riders, forced Black families out of their homes by bringing their land, churches, and schools.
Once Black families fled, Lake Lanier was built on top of what was burned down.
2.Kowaliga (Benson), Alabama
Turns out, Alabama’s Lake Martin is built on the previous majority-Black town of Kowaliga. It is home to the first Black-owned railroad started by William E. Benson and the Black school Kowaligia Academic & Industrial Institute.
William is the son of John Benson, who was enslaved and then freed. He went on a journey to rescue his sister in Florida, who was separated during slavery, and they made their way back to Alabama. John purchased thousands of acres of land sold to Black families, where he formed a community.
William helped his dad expand the family business.
After William’s death and the closing of the school,  Kowaligia was destroyed to make room for Lake Martin.
3. Seneca Village In New York City
Seneca Village began in 1825 and, at its peak, spanned from 82nd Street to 89th Street along what is now the western edge of Central Park in New York City.
By the 1840s, half of the African Americans who lived there owned their own property, a rate five times higher than the city average, as reported in Timeline.
In 1857, Seneca Village was torn down for the construction of Central Park. The only thing that remains is a commemorative plaque, dedicated in 2001 to the lost village.
4. Susannah, Alabama
Susannah, or Sousana, was also flooded by Lake Martin.
According to Alabama Living, more than 900 bodies were moved from cemeteries before the land was submerged.
The town once included a gold mine, a school, two mercantile, a grist mill, a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a church.
5. Vanport, Oregon
In the 1940s, Vanport was the center of a booming shipyard industry because of World War II and quickly became the second-largest city in the state.
But as World War II saw white males drafted to serve overseas, a labor shortage pulled in a great migration of Blacks from the south.
With soldiers being drafted overseas to fight in the war, Oregon saw a labor shortage.  This resulted in a great migration of Black Americans from the south.
These new workers needed places to live, as the Albina neighborhood was the only place where Black people could live legally. It became too small for the growing population of Black Americans, and Vanport was built as a temporary housing solution.
At its peak, 40,000 residents, or 40 percent, were African-American.
But then, in 1948 massive flooding erupted in the neighborhood, and city officials didn’t warn residents of the dangerously high water levels, Many didn’t evacuate in time.
The town was wiped out within a day. 18,500 families were displaced, more than a third Black American.
Today, that area is known as Delta Park.

Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad is a 2016 American superhero film based on the DC Comics supervillain/anti-hero team of the same name. Warner Bros. Pictures, produced by RatPac-Dune Entertainment, DC Films, and Atlas Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Distributed by Pictures,[4] it is the third installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film was written and directed by David Ayer and stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinue-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and an ensemble led by Cara. Delevingne. In the film, a secret government agency led by Amanda Waller recruits imprisoned supervillains to carry out dangerous black ops missions and save the world from a powerful threat in exchange for a reduced sentence.
By February 2009, a Suicide Squad film was in development at Warner Bros. Ayer signed on to write and direct Suicide Squad in September 2014, and the casting process began by October. Principal photography began on April 13, 2015 in Toronto, Ontario, with additional filming in Chicago and ended in August of that year. Suicide Squad premiered in New York City on August 1, 2016, and was released in the United States on August 5. After a strong debut that set new box office records, the film grossed over $746 million worldwide, making it the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2016. The film received negative reviews from critics, criticizing its plot, dialogue, direction, editing, action scenes and use of licensed music, although Robbie's performance as Harley Quinn was praised by some. The film won an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 89th Academy Awards; It is the only DCEU film to win an Academy Award. It followed a 2020 spin-off film Birds of Prey starring Robbie and a standalone sequel The Suicide Squad in 2021, with Robbie, Kinnaman, Davis and Courtney returning.

Which actress won an Oscar for 'La La Land'?
Emma Stone (born 1988) was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in the critically acclaimed film, 'La La Land'. Stone's portrayed Mia, an aspiring actress navigating the challenges of love and dreams in modern-day Los Angeles.
'La La Land', directed by Damien Chazelle, was a musical romantic comedy-drama released in 2016. The film follows the story of Mia and Sebastian, played by Ryan Gosling, as they pursue their respective artistic ambitions while falling in love.
As the 89th Academy Awards unfolded, Stone was up against Isabelle Huppert, Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman, and Meryl Streep. The selection process involves a voting system where members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences cast their votes for the nominees they believe are most deserving.
Stone's other awards include a British Academy Film Award, and a Golden Globe Award. In 2017, she was the world's highest-paid actress and named by 'Time' magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

89th Oscars Best Actress
Tumblr media
5. Meryl Streep as Florence Foster Jenkins - Florence Foster Jenkins
Streep has great chemistry with her co-stars and is able to make us feel sympathetic towards her character and the struggles she’s going through in life. But she’s the title character and while watching it it constantly felt like everyone else around her was outacting her. I think she tried her best with the bad singing but I didn’t find that part of the performance all that convincing either.
Tumblr media
4. Emma Stone as Mia Dolan - La La Land
Stone absolutely nails all the singing and dancing in the film but I think her and Gosling had very little chemistry with each other. I just also felt like there was something missing like some passion maybe and we got to see a lot of energy from her during the singing parts especially during the audition but not anywhere else. This is probably a weird way to judge the performance but it just felt like anyone could’ve played Mia, it just felt very basic and I wanted more.
Tumblr media
3. Natalie Portman as Jacqueline “Jackie” Kennedy - Jackie
When I first started watching the performance I found the accent very weird and almost laughable but I think the switching of the voice based on whether she was in public or in private was clever though it’s not always noticeable. Portman played the character exactly how I’d expect a politicians wife to be, very calculated with long pauses to show that the persons carefully considering their words before answering. She was able to show that Jackie is a very mysterious and interesting person and help us the viewers who weren’t around during that era understand the obsession around her.
Tumblr media
2. Ruth Negga as Mildred Loving - Loving
The role Negga is playing is very hard as she doesn’t always have a lot to say so she has to show us how she’s feeling with her eyes and I think she succeeded in that. The performance is very subtle and very authentic as she clearly understands what type of woman Mildred was and how she’d react and behave. It’s a very moving performance thats very calm and is able to draw emotions out of us without having to be overly sentimental. In any other year this would probably be my pick to win.
Tumblr media
1. Isabelle Huppert as Michèle Leblanc - Elle
It’s just very hard to put into words what Huppert was able to do within this performance because it’s just such an achievement. I think a role like this thats so complex and has so many twists and turns could’ve easily been very campy and not serious if given to the wrong actress. Fortunately Huppert knows how to handle both the drama and the dark comedy that the script throws at her. She’s also always on screen so she always has to be on her game because whether the film works or not is completely up to her and her acting. It’s just such a natural performance that it doesn’t surprise me to hear that she was given very little direction on what to do. Just a stunning performance all around.
Tumblr media
Conclusions
This was a year with two great performances and then 3 that were pretty good but needed a little something extra. The main theme of the five nominated movies was I guess dreams because thats what 3 of the movies in the lineup were about. The dream to legally be able to be with the one you love, the dream to sing no matter how bad your singing is and the dream to make it big and become an actress.
