Bare in mind that this is BEFORE England went into a second lockdown. So please don’t comment saying that I went against lockdown restrictions.

This time I’ve spent a couple of days in Portsmouth with a one day trip to the Isle of Wight.

On the Isle I was able to visit the Osborne House, home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It is a truly lovely place to visit. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we were unable to see all of the house for health and safety reasons. What I did see thigh was worth the trip and I highly recommend visiting. It even had its own private beach and everything.

The next day, after a quick shop around Gun Wharf, we went to the historical dockyard at Portsmouth. I had heard about the Tudor ship “Mary Rose” back on the Isle of Wight and got interested in it. And the exhibit was more impressive than I imagined it. It was discovered 1971 but wasn’t raised until 11th October 1982. They were only able to recover one half of the ship, but that’s all that’s needed in my opinion. And they found a lot on the ship. They found all the things that you expect to find on what was a war ship back in the times of Henry the VIII such as cannons, bows for archery and tools that were used on board the ship. They even found the skeleton of a dog which they believed was used as a rat catcher. And they found the remains of some of the crew too. What I found interesting is how they determined who had what jobs by examining the remains. For example they determined who had the role of the archer by examining how the spine was twisted (something that has been found with other skeletons that were found with the archery gear) and how the right fingers had grooves on the insides, which was likely caused by repeatedly pulling back the string of a longbow.

Forgive me if not all the pictures aren’t fantastic, the exhibit with the ship itself was quite dark (not to mention my IPad isn’t the best in the world for taking pictures sometimes 😒).

We also get to have a look around HMS Victory, the last ship that Lord Nelson sailed on before his death in 1805. I had been on the ship before but that was when I was 5 (I think). So going around the ship and listening to the electronic guide your given at the same time was quite good. While I was listening to the facts and walking around the ship, it actually made me feel like I was there. From the start at the battle of Cape Trafalgar to the moment when Lord Nelson passed away.

For anyone that is really into their wartime history or just history in general, I highly recommend in taking a visit to Portsmouth’s Historical Dockyard.
