Bro. Me when Gothic Literature writen by men vs Gorhic Literature written by women.

Like the lady charecters in Gothic Literature written by men all have the prevalent threat of Rape over their heads. (Excluding Dracula and Jekyll and Hyde though it can be argued that Dracula included some element of that metaphorically. Don't even get me started on the 1931 Jekyll and Hyde movie adaptation I'll start biting people.) And charecter is usually a generous word to describe them, caricatures might be more accurate. Gothic Literature has a focus on the taboo and horror but it feels fetishsizing the way these historical authors include it. This poor virginal girl (teenager usually) is going to be violated and corrupted by the big bad monster. Like oh that's very original did you get a papercut on your dick jerking off to this? Oh the man couldn't have possibly resisted the temptation and he threw himself at her in the throws of passion? Shut up. Men are not rabid dogs that throw themselves at every piece of meat. And I know historically women were believed to be too tempting to resist or whatever but that shouldn't stop me from pointing out ACEDEMICALLY the pattern. This theme of violation as a threat means that these male authors knew that it was the worst thing that could ever happen to these young girls. That it was violent and wrong and the men that do it are monsters, but they still treat it with the same sublime colored glasses that they treat the supernatural with. This is horrific, it is not beautiful in the way blood dripping onto snow is, it is not beautiful in the way a sword skewering someone and staining their pastel clothes red it, it's just horrific. There is no honor in violence, historically Gothic Literature as a genre has known that, but the theme of sexual violence is still present and it is present in a fetishsizing light. In this I am discussing The Castle of Otranto, Vathek, and volumes 1 and 2 of The Monk. Even if it was important to the themes of the story or even well written (Unreliable narrator Raymond in The Monk) I just have to ask academically; Why is it so prevalent? And I do invite people to genuinely answer me.

Because then there is Gothic Literature written by women, and their women ARE charecters. And Frankenstein for example is about death, and fatherhood, and playing God. It's main charecter is a sniveling coward and all of the women in it are brave in the face of danger. Elizabeth marries Victor because she is a good daughter who wants to honor their mother's final wish. She tells everyone about the injustice of the trial, that she is sure her friend did not kill Henry. Isn't that interesting? That Mary Shelly could explore those themes without dangling sexual assault over the who narrative or describing a woman's "soft, warm, breasts" in detail even once? Or Rebecca! Which I admit I haven't read all the way through, she could portray a marriage gone very wrong and the main charecter calmly helping her new husband cover up his wife's murder, without treating the main charecter as a delicate flower in over her head. She isn't pure, she isn't delicate, she may be insecure but she can certainly handle herself, especially by the end of the novel. And though it had themes centered around romance, reputation, and when a wrong is justified, there was never a threat of sexual assault. (Actually is Rebecca Gothic Literature? You decide I guess.) So there is horror, and beauty, and taboo to be explored without the threat that male authors have historically dangled over women's heads. The creature is beautiful, and new, and it doesn't know better, but he never even thought about sex. I don't know if he even knew what it entailed, he was 4 by the end of the book after all. (Though I would argue Frankenstein is more Dark Romantisism then Gothic, but they do have alot of overlap and my professor disagrees.)

Anyway my reading list for a class is getting me down on account of Shelly being the ONLY female author on it, which I wasn't too upset about until 3 of the four texts we read included what I discussed above. And for the Castle of Otranto my professor skipped over the very real threat Isabella was under, focusing instead on her loyalty to Hippolita. I like Castle of Ontario. I like the Monk. I think they are interesting, I get the themes, I get it.

Okay so basically a bit of historical context first

The story of newsies is loosely based on the Newsboy Strike of 1899, in which prices were raised in July of 1899 by Pulutzer and Hearst to get prices back to wartime income. The newsies did not take this well and went on strike. The charecter of Jack Kelly is loosely based on a newsie named Kid Blink, aka Louis Baletti. He was the first union leader and lived to be 32 before dieing of tuberculosis and he may have worked for a mobster!!!! The charecter of Davey Jacobs is loosely based on David Simmons, a Jewish boxer newsie, the second leader of the strike. Both Blink and Simmons were kicked out for alleged scabbing. The charecter closest to a real life person is Racetrack Higgins, the lovable Manhatten newsie in the musical. He's based on Ed "Racetrack" Higgins, who led Brooklyn and started the strike with a 14 year old Spot Conlon. Ed actually lived a long time, living to be around 75 or so. Another key player was a female newsie named Annie Kelly, although I can't find much information on her. Crutchie Morris was also a real person with the same name as his musical counterpart, who reportedly sold around the sheepshead track if im not mistaken.

Racetrack in the movie is actually confirmed trans by the director if im not mistaken, which is pretty cool. The movie is actually pretty gay in terms of interactions and subtext and everything. Although, it did flop at box-office. It was rushed and Christian Bale was cast because he was famous, not necessarily cause he could sing.

The musical, on the other hand, did quite the opposite of flop. When it premiered at the papermill playhouse, it almost immediately went to broadway. Oh, and another thing about the movie. Katherine Plumber was not originally in it! She was added when it was adopted into a stage musical. She's named for Pulitzers real daughter who died at age two. I've actually seen newsies twice live, once in the round, once traditionally.

Mike Faist originally played Morris Delancey, and a lot of former newsies are actually in the cast of 2021's West Side Story!

All the newsies have collectors cards that explain their backstories, for example Jojo, who was raises by nuns all his life. My dream is to own those cards it'd be so cool. I'd also really like to play jack kelly. There is actually a newsie called Kid Blink in the 92 movie, with an eyepatch. That's all I can think to say rn, but I'll answer any questions u have!!!!!!

My opinion on the whole "Birdetta" thing

Listen let me preface this by saying I'm a huge lifelong Mario fan, and I'm also a trans woman. I also really like Birdo as a charecter. Imo she's one of my favorite charecters in the entire series and I love her and Vivian for being one of the few trans reps in media as a kid.

That being said, my personal headcanon regarding Yoshis and Birdos are that they're the same species. Much like Hens and Roosters, they look extremely different and most people treat them as different species but they're the same species, just they have extreme differences in appearences. So I always thought Yoshis and Birdos were the same species, just Yoshis were the males of that race and Birdos were the females of that race.

I mean...correct me if I'm wrong but we haven't seen any explicitly Yoshis who are women, or Birdos who are men in the games. So it checks out right? And we haven't seen any Yoshis or Birdos named anything other than well...Yoshi and Birdo respectively. I always thought this was common place in the mushroom kingdom. There are some deviations to this rule though like Gonzalas Jr. From TTYD or any Toad who's name isn't Toad.

So I always thought the main Birdo in the Mario series...the one in Mario 2 and who's playeble in the spinoffs. Was originally named "Yoshi" and now is Birdo. With Birdetta being a possible nickname.

As for the Mario 2 manual it could possibly be a mistranslation...they mixed up Ostro and Birdo's names after all. Or it could be a case of early instalment weirdness with her name. There's so much weird stuff in earlier instruction manuals that don't appear in the games so it could possibly be non canon at this point.

Another thing I would like to point out- is that Birdo's description in the Mario 2 manual is clearly a transphobic joke. It is meant to mock trans people. Birdo has become a genuine good and genuine peice of trans representation since then of course. But it still irks me that people are treating a transphobic, poorly translated blurb in a game released so early in the series as canon gospel over the last 20+ years of her being playeble in Mario games, it's annoying.

And besides I...don't think that Birdo's friends and boyfriend Yoshi would dead name her regularly. Plus it's not a pleasent thought to think Mario and his friends would dead name birdo for 20+ years.

So yeah I just wanted to put this out here. You can headcanon whatever you want in a peice of media, if you headcanon Birdo as Birdetta you do you. But you don't have to spam any post that even remotely mentions Birdo and make people adopt your headcanon about her. Just as you don't have to adopt my headcanon about Yoshi's and Birdos being the same species.

So whats the idea

I watched the Netflix series and i quite enjoyed it. I didnt blow my mind but i did enjoy it and i had a good time

So basically i though about giving the original anime a go. Like a original vs remake but the other way around, to see how well made it actually is in relation to the source material

It wont be a direct comparison all the time, mostly normal shitpost from me with some notes on first impressions and mayor plot points if they are too different from what Netflix did

Keep reading for my take on the Netflix Show

Overall, good and fun. I had some issues with the pacing of it and bc it did feel like an Adaptation™ And by that i mean more of a reenactment at some points rather than an actual adaptation, specially the first few eps.

I judge an adaptation on its ability to stand on its own, so people that dont know the source material can enjoy it too, without missing the essence of that show

So, i liked ✅

- The charecters had good chemestry and from the fisrt scene you knew the tone of the show

- The charecter desing seems to be very very detailed and well kept

- Visually amazing and you can tell, even without having seen the anime, all the scenarios and spaces are really detailed and they def ref the source material

- I guess the made the female charecters more badass and less revealing (it was 1998 who you trying to fool) and to me at least didnt feel like a Girlboss, Gatekeep, Gaslight kinda bullshit

That said, points i question ❓

- like i said, it felt like a reenactment at first, i felt i was missing out on stuff

- tho that got better with time, i felt there were easteregss everywhere, all the time, and not in a cute 'for the fans' way but in a 'you should know this' kinda way

- problems with pacing. Idk, it was just off but that usual with Netflix

- the relationships with the charecters developed more off camera bc the anime prob shows a lot of that and they just asumed you already know their dynamic

-Faye is so wester i just cant imagine how it translate into the japanesse culture

BNHA Multiverse Adventure by Mizutami Aneko

Mizutami Katsu is dead, however when she died she was assigned to watch over the multiverse. However long into her job she is assigned to show the multiverse to the cast of My Hero. Of course she choose a similar enough universe with the only difference being it is no seacret who Midoriya's father is. (Slight AU)

She brings them to the well known multiverse theater in hopes of both tearing and bringing faith back to charecters because so many of them are thinking one dimensionally.

then sa2 is just like yeah so we have a milf whos a spy and a 2 teamer.  also we have a evil gay sonic who fucking wants to kill the world because hes like a manmade god or something and was told to kill everyone once like his sister died of illness and like his dad and him were taken in by the fucking army 

and then he dies

...oh hes was our most loved charecter....bring him back....he has clones now or something and has a motorcycle and a gun and talks to demons and runs from the police or something.....

then you have sonic riders who you have 3 brand new charecters whos like the kaotics but gayer and althletic

in sonic o6 you get a human girl, eggfuck is now ugglier, AND YOU GET A LESBIANA ND A TWINK .. also like a foil to the edgy gay man

oh the lesbian appeared a few games earlier where they also introduced cream the rabbit

sonic x had like a badger and the annoying kid and maybe a few others i think

uhhhh sonic unleashed made sonic even more of a furry and gave you a small chompanion....

the rings game made everyone a artherian person i think ?

sonic colors added the whips

sonic generations added the split between  classic and modern with eggman and robotnic, class/ mod  sonic and tails and maybe knuckles and amy but i dont think so

....... i cant remeber what comes next..... sonic boom (the tv show) gave us those 2 eggman box bots, or and sticks

basically i made this because its just weird to think about how contrasting sonic is to shadow like you have sonic whos just a runner then shadow whos just so diffrent lore wise 

also the sonic ova had the catgirl and satam sonic/ archie added a bunch of charecters. idw has been making alot of very cool charecters. uh sonic underground had also new charecters . the sonic movie had a few new charecters but yeah
