this is a list of moments where natsu is smart (but its also me yapping because i was getting bored waiting for every little instance) (episodes from 49 to 64)

- upon their first encounter with oracion seis, smelled them and alerted gray and everyone

- when carla told them that wendy's dragon, grandeeny, suddenly disappeared seven years ago, started connecting dots in his brain

- when fighting those bro-monkey goons, after getting shot at his back, simply incinerated bullets (were they physical? magical? anyways, cool)

- (look how friendly he is with erigor, meeting him after so long, how erigor is unnerved by it and gray is fucking done with him-)

- interrogated beat up goons about whereabouts of oracion seis' lair (sure, with erza-esque tactic "ask-punch-repeat", but at least he thought of it)

- (also, it must be their temporary place, but oracion seis' lair is so pathetic it's hysterical. we have grimoire heart with their cool-looking flying ship with mechanical heart, we have tartarus with their highly functional flying cube, and these have, like, a cave? where all your guild goon taxes went to? racer's motorcycles?)

- when natsu, wendy and cats reached fallen erza, he was quick to ask for help and point out that no matter what she may have done with jellal, erza really needed her help (well, not really smarts thing, but natsu's quick actions allowed wendy to finally pull herself together)

- when nirvana has activated its magic and sent a black light beam, natsu either sensed or figured that jellal was there were beam of nirvana is

- (okay, nirvana thingamagick has my respect for having nothing to do with zeref and co. but what was the point of its first stage, where people who are usually on one side of morals and are on the gray side for this moment, get their side of morals switched? sherry, who was grief stricken switched to attacking gray, wendy was nearing the switch with her guilt over jellal situation, but hibiki knocked her out, and hoteye was reminded of his time with his brother when fighting jura and he switched from being money-obsessed to being pacifist. very mixed bag of results if you ask me. hibiki later explained that the switching is controllable in final phase, but in the first one? is it more like a side effect of first stage for activating nirvana? prolly-)

- (lucy happy and carla saying that in case of switching natsu won't change much, and that he exists outside of framework of good and evil, they did NOT pull the punches, my favourite freak of the monster nature)

- (respect from me to angel, she summoned gemini for a prolonged period of time, and as far as i know they are rather magic-consuming, AND she was using her spirits cleverly, countering aquarius with scorpio and loki with aries)

- (also, gemini is such underappreciated spirit for how lucy moved their heart, damn)

- (and, like, uranometria is cool, but how did lucy even have enough magic power for it, if she was feeling weak after summoning in quick succession? eh, i'm nitpicking, but there is little else for me to do-)

- ("actually, i didn't die😒" sorano😭😭😭😭)

- (can you imagine a what-if "what if when wendy was travelling with mystogan, that anima that forced him to leave wendy never happened?" i mean, they look so much like siblings already, gosh-)

- (can you imagine being a kind hearted and optimistic kid in a god awful situation, and then getting brainwashed and manipulated into doing even more despicable thing, and later being freed from brainwashing and realising all the sins you've committed? god, take all the cramps from jellal and give them to, i dunno, brain)

- btw, when fighting cobra, was it natsu and happy's first on-screen airborne fight? mad respect for them and their team work!!!

- when fighting cobra, when he declared that he was going to stop nirvana, and cobra replied that he was not letting natsu near brain, natsu put two and two together and figured that it was brain who controlled nirvana

- when fighting cobra, he was rather fast in switching between tactics, first he just punched, second he tried rapid firing long ranged attacks, third he was hiding in ruins in ambush attack, then he fucking joked at cobra mentally and actually got him to laugh, happy even thought of faking their attacks. even cobra admitted that natsu was thinking a lot and that he had some not bad plans

- when fighting cobra, managed to get so into fight he was fighting without thinking, getting a couple of hits on cobra. that impressed cobra, leaving him to question whenever natsu is actually a genius or a total idiot, for he is seeing someone like that for the first time. hearing that cobra was a dragon slayer was what threw him out of that state

- got into cobra's close quarters, almost getting him to face a roar close up

- (they really only won because of natsu accidentally letting out an extra loud non-magical roar AND brain back-stabbing cobra)

- natsu, exhausted, poisoned, and motion sick, chomping into brain-

I've always saw it that Jellal wasn't dead. He was severely injured and on death's door, but not dead. That he was in like, a stasis state probably in part of the coffin he was in and due to the Etherion.

I suspect that the coffin was a magical item. What kind, I don't know but it was probably something that sustains whatever is in it. Like, it doesn't heal them but it also doesn't let them deteriorate.

As for the Etherion, we know that too much can kill a person, but not how much(it probably varies from person to person depending on how much magic they can hold). We also know that Etherion is what they call the magic and that mages absorb that to replenish their magic.

What I think is that the Etherion was both killing and saving him(I want to say it's like electricity). Plus with the coffin and whatever it does, keep him living long enough for Wendy to heal him and remove the Etherioin poisoning him.

So she didn't revive him from the dead, she revived him from a stasis state.

So there was something I forgot to mention that I went "what?" With during the oracion seis arc. Wendy apparently as tasked with resurrecting Jellal. Now I don't know if it was a mistranslation or Mashima just forgetting his own lore, but I would've figured resurrection magic to be a dark magic with consequences.

Like I thought Zeref got cursed for messing with life and death. If that's the case why was wendy able to do it so inconsequentially?

Fairy Tail AUs

I did a couple of these for Transformers a while back and I figured it might be fun to do again.

Slayer Swap AU - In which the various dragon, god, and devil slayers follow slightly different paths in life and end up in each others guilds.

Dragon Swap AU - In which the Dragon Slayers are raised by each others dragons instead of their own, leading to five much different people in the present day.

Changeling AU - In which everything doesn't go back to normal after the titular body swapping episode, forcing everyone to focus up and train and get used to their new bodies as best as they can. Whether they're strong enough to endure Phantom's attack remains to be seen.

Renegade Guild AU - In which Fairy Tail is forcibly disbanded alongside Phantom Lord in the aftermath of their battle. Never one to bow to the council's wishes, Fairy Tail reforms as the newest dark guild. Luckily for the council, the illegal guild has decided to take its frustrations out on the other dark guilds instead of striking back.

Phantom Lucy AU - In which Lucy chooses to join Phantom Lord instead of Fairy Tail. Unfortunately, she quickly finds that it isn't what she had hoped it to be, especially once Jude comes knocking...

Erza in Edolas AU - In which Anima targets the Tower of Heaven while it's exploding, bringing both it and Erza to Edolas. Now, trapped in this strange new world without her magic or friends, Erza searches for a way home as she fights against the royal army alongside Lisanna and a distrusting Fairy Tail.

Oracion Seis-Building Blocks for Plot

If you ask a Fairy Tail fan “when does the story become more serious?” there is no definite answer. Some may say around Tenrou Island or even early on during the Phantom Lord arc or during the Galuna Island arc. However, Fairy Tail never truly gets serious until later. It just seems to add plot. It just needs to break up the comedy well with backstories and tragedy. However, if you were to ask me I would say the Oracion Seis arc, a great mix of everything Fairy Tail has. It has memorable villains, memorable side characters who hold significance later in the series, and brings in the center plot of Fairy Tail.  Oracion Seis introduces us to the ‘plot’ of Fairy Tail without quite telling us what this plot is. Of course the center plot is having an adventure. Natsu finding Igneel and the others with their lives in Fairy Tail, but it pushes something forward for someone not into the slice of life aspect of Fairy Tail. This, of course, is the idea of the Balam Alliance.An alliance of dark guilds, centered around a center three; Oracion Seis, Grimoire Heart, and Tartaros. Each of these bring excellent arcs to follow their stories but the first one we will talk about will be the first one they truly fight, Oracion Seis.  With the introduction to the Oracion Seis arc comes the introduction to multiple characters as well. Here we find out more details about other guilds other than a piece of Blue Pegasus’ past and the fact that there are more guild masters out there. Here we get main characters that we will be seeing a great deal of through upcoming arcs, though they are pretty much all after the seven year timeskip. We even see some returning ones like Lyon and Sherry, who have moved on from their days trying to revive Deliora and we are introduced to another Wizard Saint, Jura. Of course the main person we are introduced to is Wendy and her cat Carla. I must admit for a great while I hated these two, I felt their introduction is when the show started to get stale. Then over time Wendy began to grow on me as I saw her grow up like you would watching a little girl. Carla, on the other hand, did not grow on me at all and I still have a love hate relationship with her. i wont go into too much detail on the Oracion Seis arc, but I do remember finding it a bit exciting. It is still not in the top quality of arcs in my opinion, but it still holds your attention well enough. I’m here to discuss how Oracion built up the plotline in an intriguing way. Fairy Tail’s plot came pretty late. Of course, as stated before, you have the center plot of a journey still in action. But this is the main plot with actual villains who would want to put an end to the world. The villains this arc make their returns in later arcs, well most of them, and we still watch them grow and develop into their own redemption later on. Having them connected to Tower of Heaven was even better. The way that they are directly tie into Erza and Jellal’s past but still are independent from them (for the most part) is interesting. It goes to show yet another domino that fell into place as the story developed.  Oracion Seis was enough to get us interested in the alliance and the concept of it and make us worry for our characters. Of course they faced difficult opponents before, but nothing like this level. Nothing that required them to work with other guilds, which once again ties into the theme of friendships. It would have been great if we got some Gajeel and Juvia moments with them also defeating parts of the Oracion Seis guild (like we are told they were doing), but I understand why they weren’t there. (I am just dying for more moments with their sibling like bond okay?)  The Oracion Seis guild ad nothing special to it like the others did. The only ‘big connection’ that they had to the characters was Angel being the murderer for Loke’s previous master. It doesn’t stand out to me in an alliance with things such as ‘Grimoire Heart’ and for sure not ‘Tartaros’ with each having great magic users that were extremely dangerous and had slayers and demons. But we can’t all expect it to be that planned out. Oh and I must mention that plot twist at the very end with Wendy’s guild always gets me. She was only twelve when it was ripped away like a Band-Aid and replaced with Fairy Tail. If you say she was there since six years old, that was six years that were spent there roughly only for it to be gone. That will always bring me pain and I’m glad they mentioned it in the Final Arc with them pretending to be in Cait Shelter. Before I end this I would like to say, although I saw it coming a mile away when Yukino mentioned her sister, I love that plot twist. The sibling dynamic between Yukino and Sorano is hilarious. Not to mention this is when we see the real Jellal, who is guilty for his crimes although he doesn’t know what had happened. The pain Erza feels must be so hard, but I’m glad that it is settled now. He definitely deserves it after that chaos. But I would love to hear what you all think about this arc. I wish I could go into more detail, but there isn’t much I can possibly put into words. I was pretty happy with the outcome in the end, especially that scene with everyone holding up Christina while flying it to help Natsu and the gang before crashing again.

this is a list of moments where natsu is smart (but it's getting less and less of them per arc, so i'm filling up space with my yapping) (episodes from 65 to 80)

(i took a small break, c'mon, watching fairy tail for 5 days straight is tough)

- when hibiki gave them the map of nirvana lacrimas, managed to figure out that zero is on lacrima 1 by his senses alone (tho i don't know how much he trusted them, he seemed pretty shocked when he saw zero)

- when fighting zero, managed to stop/dispel/burn zero's dark capriccio with his iron fist

- (am i the only one who thinks that we are SO missing out on a bond between jellal and natsu? how natsu was going to fight jellal there and then, how jellal shielded natsu feom zero's attack, and it being paralleled with how simon shielded erza and natsu from jellal's attack? how jellal gave natsu his flame of rebuke to boost natsu, and natsu accepts it and thanks him? gah-)

- when fighting zero, natsu managed to deflect zero's attack with his fire

- (for me, it's always such a delight to see natsu fight, he moves so much, with so much grace, like dancing licks of flame, and fight with zero shows it spectacularly, ough-)

- (also, what is it with igneel? "you dare to call yourself child of igneel" huh? i kinda see where he is coming from, natsu really strives to proof himself, so he wants to encourage him to fight that way, but it rubs me the wrong way? and in the flashback, at natsu's very reasonable question how can he even break that huge rock, igneel just says to "never give up before you try" and "believe in you strength" and "never forget that you are a dragon slayer, be proud of it" (okay, the bit with how he'll always be with natsu is sweet), and natsu is just "okay, but i still don't get it how to break this rock :/". i think he was trying to convey what makarov said in first episodes, how magic comes from the heart and belief, but from igneel, to me it came off more like a parent telling their neurodivergent child to "just do it, it's easy, everyone else is doing it fine, you should try harder", like, hey, if i am not managing to do it, how would i do it without you explaining it? eh, it's me rambling-)

- when fighting zero, he managed to burn and dispel zero's genesis zero with his flames (which i think set a precedent to him just burning his way through various spells and magic)

- (and also, can i say how beautiful the names of his attacks are? first it was crimson lotus against laxus, now it's phoenix blade against zero, wow, i did not know you had it in you, natsu (i mean, okay, we don't know who exactly designed them, natsu himself or igneel, but even if it was igneel, i just can't imagine him naming them, especially after another mythical creature))

- (natsu was the first who stood up for jellal against rune knights, calling jellal their comrade, my fucking heart)

- (i am now an advocate for jellal and natsu's sibling-like relationship. like, look: tried to revive a person, tried to sacrifice his loved one person, tried to change the world, regarded as genius in magic, feels immense guilt over past actions, has several personalities. now, who am i talking about - jellal or zeref?-)

- (also, do we have honest to god ghosts in fairy tail? cait shelter was all an illusion, and roubaul said that he was something of a thought projection, like jellal used with siegrain, and then mavis with herself, since she was not really dead. so, no ghost?)

- (also, my headcanon is that cait shelter was named after cat is beacause dragon slayers behave kinda like cats, and roubaul took one look at wendy and immediately thought of her as an abandoned kitten)

- (oh, daphne arc, joy🙄🙄)

- when fighting gray, for gray to not land a hit on him he broke the floor under them

- (what was your deal, gray? yeah, natsu forgot about his promise, but what does it have to do with you? he was 12, what could have he done? and people of silence just said that they'll be waiting for as long as they'll need, so no time clutch. and since you stalked him there, why did you not just, reminded him? i doubt you were going out of your way to solve it, not since you met up with daphne while she was in magnolia these seven days, just say that there is a person for natsu to beat, thats all. and really, "when i heard about dragonoid i figured that the only way to beat him was from inside" don't give this bullshit, the fastest way to beat dragonoid was to beat daphne before she even started it. and the condition to releasing people of silence was to beat "the one who controls dragons", not the dragonoid itself. if it was your genuine plan, and not something to fuck over with natsu, then please, don't let anyone let you plan again, there will be casualties-)

- (and the moment natsu fell into dragonoid he remembered town of silence, go figure that gray really didn't to go all this way to remind natsu of his promise)(also, he only forgot about it because he thought it was a weird dream on his part, but gray couldn't have had this thought because he was watching natsu, so he knew for sure it was not a dream)

- (daphne is overpowered, what do you mean you can stop a whole town from revealing themselves from their magic-)

- (i... get it what they were trying to do, they wanted to overheat dragonoid with natsu's flames of emotions, but could you not do it when he gave you direct permission to thrash dragonoid with him, and not when the guys soul is 3 percent from being fucking absorbed, i swear to god, if not for gajeel just straight up punching the core, they really would've lost natsu)

- (kudos from me to gajeel for remembering that lucy has a spirit with arrows and that they can deliver fire for natsu to boost himself)

- (THANK FUCK ITS OVER)

- at fairy tail's annual sprint, he managed to boost his speed with his flames (but gajeel still was running toe to toe with him and gray and erza, gray has ice floor to skate and erza has her special get up to not lose as much stamina and maintain her pace, how did gajeel got in top 5 all on his own? how fast is that fucker?)

- (i really want to see natsu in serious sexy get up-)

- hey, for everyone to know, natsu knows that when people are in danger you should prioritise people in danger over fighting since he was 12 YEARS OLD-

- ooooow, gildarts playing catch with natsu while talking with him, then going fishing, playing with him, picking mushrooms, having a picknick, watching over him when he and lisanna sleep, he is such a dad to him, he just looked at him once and immediately thought "yeah, that little spitfire needs a parent. anyone? no? oh well, why not me-"

I’ve reached the point in my Fairy Tail rewatch where it’s further along than tfd ever got, which means shit keeps happening that makes me go “fucking WHAT”

Hot take: Fairy Tail does Filler Arcs right.

In many way, the series is structured in a way that makes Anime original content work in between story arcs. Some of this involved rewriting various side stories into the main narrative proper.

For example, the Galuna Island arc goes directly into the Phantom Lord arc where the returning Team Natsu finds the wrecked Guild Hall. However, the Anime would rewrite this so they’d return to the hall and stumble into a body swapping breather episode. However, this would also allow for some needed setup for Elfman’s character growth in the coming saga.

Just before Phantom Lord goes on the offense, we get an episode where Lucy learns of the origins of Happy. In tandem, we’re introduced to Natsu’s Childhood Friend™ as well as the third Strauss Sibling in Lisanna.

Combine this with Elfman’s meek demeanor and Mirajane in the middle of what can be described as her middle schooler edgelord phase, it’s clear that something bad happened to Liz for her to not be among the Guild Members. This lays the foundation for Elfman coming to terms with his past and mastering his Full Body Takeover, giving a look into why he prides being a Man™.

But that’s Manga material rearranged and recontextualized. What about full on story arcs?

The Daphne Arc was meant to be where the Anime was going to go on hiatus before proceeded into Edolas. Hence, Guildarts isn’t mentioned for fear they might not get renewed. It’s pretty fun but nothing too special. That said, it does allow for something smaller scaled where the whole guild still gets in on the fun.

The Key of the Starry Heavens arc is one that I think functions well before the Grand Magic Games. It’s a way to get reacquainted with both Fiore and the guild after the sudden time skip as the Oracian Seis calls for an all hands on deck adventure beyond just Team Natsu. Romeo gets to go with the gang and show off his fire magic. Even Bisca and Alzack get in on the party.

You got use to the shabby guild hall as a home base that the team would return to in order to regroup and figure out their next move rather than always be out on the field.

Furthermore, it builds off the previous arc by way of Michelle and Jude Heartfilia’s involvement with finding the clock piece. It gives emotional weight by way of Lucy’s loss driving her to pursue leads on the artifact. There’s also the very inspired choice of having Earthland counterparts of their Edolas adversaries be their opening villains before the Seis return.

What I love about this is how we don’t just pretend it didn’t happen. Lucy still has Michelle as a doll in her home right up to the final two episodes in the Anime. Those of Zentopia cameo in the finale with the “Actually” archeologists. Yukino references how Celestial Wizards were affected by these events in the coming arc. Sorano even references the Infinity Clock during the infiltration of Alvarez.

The Eclipsed Spirits Arc isn’t exactly something game changing by comparison but also gets similar nods by way of Mard Gear recalling this during his battle with the Celestia Spirit King. Broadly speaking, this arc does serve to be a bit less on edge as a breather. We know things will turn out in the end in filler so might as well enjoy the journey.

These lowered stakes give us a sense of peace and security until the Tartaros Arc smashed that to pieces. It helps that we don’t get the Guild Hall back only for it to go kablooie soon after. We get reacquainted with it with the filler arc and string of stand alone adventures to. It actually mitigates the string of world ending threats by having stories where we know things will be alright in the end.

I kind of wish that Dragon Cry was a filler arc just before the long endgame with Alvarez where we see Erza acting as the Seventh Master.
