No. I hate this take, and I'm sorry to be adding to someone else's post to say it because I genuinely don't want to send hate to OP. But I am so so tired of this HORRIBLE take about Tim. It's completely ridiculous to me to think that Tim Drake is in any way a child who had a normal childhood. "I went to the circus-" Fucking stop. Stop.

Tim Drake, at the ripe old age of TODDLER watched his two heroes fall to their extremely graphic and painful deaths. In front of their child, who we know for sure would have been screaming and crying if not vomiting at the scene. Their child who, earlier that same night, had been happily taking pictures with Tim and treating him so kindly.

Tim would be fucking RUINED just from that alone.

But, adding to that, he also was not giver proper adult supervision for literally almost his entire life before joining the Waynes. By proper, I mean actual real child care. Not school, not just the occasional rotation of nannies he's depicted as having had. Real, actual, care. He was starved for touch and attention and love for years, God knows he wasn't given any therapy after witnessing the death of the Graysons either. Homeboy had so much trauma and was so fucked up as a kid/teen he took to STALKING BATMAN for FUN.

I mean seriously???? Did we read the same character? Tim Drake has every reason to man to become a vigilante. And then? He figures out that Batman and Robin are his neighbors? Specifically that Dick Grayson is Robin? There was never anything that could have stopped Tim from being Robin even if Jason hadn't died.

And then he gets involved and his mom dies and his dad is severely hurt? Yeah. Why do people always insist he should be "normal" or "Okay" or some bullshit? He's a severely mentally ill teenager, and being Robin is one of few things that probably helps him not just go rogue and start fucking murdering people.

Again, do not send hate to OP. And this isn't to say OP is like. A bad fan or some shit. I'm just saying if you're going to talk about a character, you need to know them. And Tim is such an underrated and misunderstood character so it just makes my heart hurt to see people totally not get it.

Go follow OP tho and, give them love to make up for my rant here.

I know that no one asked but I just wanted to add my two cents to the current pjo era we are having right now...

First off, I love Rick and the books he has written but honestly tsast and wottg aren't some of his best works. That's not the problem because yeah not all books can be amazing but the problem is that they are his most recent ones. Cotg was better than these 2 but it too had it's drawbacks. Now I have this thing where if I like something then however bad it it, I try to make myself enjoy it. It's like a coping mechanism- delusion. But with wottg, I actually sat back and thought. Since when did I take a week to finish a pjo book? I am the person who finished Hoo in like less than a week and I took a week to finish wottg which took me aback. The characters were very oc. Grover was perhaps the only character close to his actual well character. I don't usually nitpick but like I had said in a post earlier, continuity and callbacks in a book series are what make them extremely enjoyable and small textual errors are like pricking needles to me.

My main issue was Annabeth and then Percy. Look in know in this fandom there are many Annabeth antis and that's fine, I accept that. But now the worst part is that what they have said about Annabeth is to some extent true in this current Annabeth version we have. Look Leah is great and I love her with all my heart but Rick please don't mingle both of them together. Let show cannon be separate and book cannon to itself. Let Annabeth in wottg be her book character like please. She has friends? Great! The main thing we know about her friends are that they think Percy isn't GOOD ENOUGH for her? Awful! She is the mom friend? Okay(though I personally believe it should be Grover but fine if people are okay with it this is just a personal opinion guys)! BUT that should not make Percy 'alley boy.'

This brings me to the second part. We love Percy and love his humor. Well I recently reread the Battle of the Labyrinth (don't ask why I don't know I just had the sudden urge to read it). He isn't very confident and does underestimate himself often but it wasn't taken this FAR. Every single next line was describing how Percy sucks at everything while Annabeth is here in all her perfect glory and believe it or not this is coming from me, who loves Annabeth. I love Percabeth because it's a balance. They balance off each other soo well. They both comfort each other. They both know that they are smart. They both know that the other person has flaws. But in wottg it's just downright annoying because the dynamic is just "ooh look my gf is soo amazing, totally flawless with no error and here is me who sucks at any and every thing possible." This isn't the Percy we know nor Annabeth nor Percabeth.

LET ANNABETH BE IMPERFECT! AND PLEASE GIVE PERCY THERAPY because he needs it. For the next book Rick please just hire a better editor because I am not going into the MISTAKES in these books. You can hire me if you want because I swear I can do a better job than your editor. Seriously literally any pjo fan would do a better job. Wottg felt like maybe the second draft of the work which required maybe 3 more drafts to be published. It felt like an unchecked fanfiction and believe me that I have seen better fanfictions on AO3. The pjo fandom is an extremely loyal fanbase which is an extremely cool thing. But the problem here is that people like m even though I didn't really enjoy wottg, I would still hope for a better sequel because gaaahhhh optimism. I am actually wary of the sequel to tsast but that's for another post.

Whew! Talking so negatively about something was a new experience for me because I absolutely love pjo and will always keep it close to my heart. Rick please for the sake of advertisement please don't publish uncooked gibberish because it actually breaks my heart too see the hate and for once I understand it. Anyway, wottg wasn't all that bad. To balance out this post, I'll make one on the portions I liked because there were a few moments that were worth reading. I also released a new song titled “Into The Light”. The music video for the song is also on YouTube now. This song is packed with the emotions and thoughts leading up to this point, including my decision to come out. Living with anxieties and struggles is not limited to just LGBTQ+ individuals. I hope this song can be a source of encouragement for anyone carrying such emotions. I've aimed for it to become a song that can uplift those with similar feelings. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Pride House Tokyo, Japan’s first permanent LGBTQ+ center, and ReBit, an organization providing resources and support for LGBTQ+ youth. I hope this song will touch many hearts.🙏🌈

Fans of Shinjiro Atae, a J-pop idol who has been on a nearly two-year performance hiatus, had come to hear him talk about “the challenge of my life.” Standing onstage in a dark auditorium in front of 2,000 fans in central Tokyo on Wednesday night, he revealed something he has kept hidden for most of his life: He is gay.

AAA debuted in 2005, with Mr. Atae, the youngest member, forgoing high school. He performed mostly as a dancer, and began appearing in TV series and movies.

His sexuality perplexed him. “It was a time when on TV, comedians would say two men kissing was gross,” he said. If anyone asked if he had a girlfriend, he just said he was too busy working.

Activists said they could not recall an instance when a Japanese pop star of his stature had publicly declared they were gay, because of anxieties about losing fans or sponsors.

“I think he has decided to come out in order to change Japan,” said Gon Matsunaka, a director and adviser to Pride House Tokyo, a support center for the gay and transgender community.

I sewed a Wolfkiller Cloak!

I have been a fan of Lestat's Wolfkiller Cloak for 30 years(!!) so when it made a surprise appearance in season 2 of Interview with the Vampire I just knew I would be sewing one for myself.

It looks incredible in the show, but then we also got to see more of it in better lighting during the short, behind the scenes "Episode Insider" for the episode. Essentially, this is a calf-length, blood-red velvet cape with an additional, elbow-length capelet on top, and a fur-lined hood.

But having made capes in the past, I realised that they are really impractical to wear due to limited arm mobility and having either your arms or body freeze through the openings.

So instead of sewing exactly what I saw on screen, I realised I could instead sew a swing coat + little capelet on top with fur-lined hood! And even better - make the capelet removable via hooks at the neckline so that they could be worn together or separately. This was a Eureka! moment for me. I wanted to make something that is somewhat authentic to the look of the original, but also practical to wear as an every day winter coat!

After quite a few muslins, I settled on the Charm Patterns Swing Coat (with some modified sleeves), and a self-drafted capelet (similar to my earlier cape from Claudia S1 NYE look) with a fur-lined hood. I drafted the hood pieces so that the fur lining is longer and wraps around the opening edge. This makes the fur more visible when its down around the shoulders, as in the show.

I used 5m of burgundy velvet and 0.5 m of Arctic Grey Wolf faux fur from CRS Fabrics (UK) - the fur itself was £60/m(!!) so I'm extremely pleased the show version wasn't entirely lined in fur like the book description (scroll down for more on that!). I underlined it for warmth using cotton flannel to block the wind, and found an incredible dark grey skull jacquard lining fabric at Mood Fabrics (US).

The swing coat pattern only has one button at the neck, so I made it count! I found the most perfect wolf head button on ebay and adjusted my bound buttonhole accordingly, but it really is the best statement button I could've ever asked for! The rest of the front opening is closed with enamel hooks and hidden thread bars to not distract from the clean lines when worn open.

In all, this took me about 6 weeks to sew and I am SO chuffed with how it turned out. I usually only take daytime photos for my sewing in order to best show off the details and seamlines, but for this I couldn't resist an additional nighttime shoot, too.

Even better - after I posted it to Instagram, the costume designer for the show, Carol Cutshall, not only said she loves it, but revealed a new piece of iwtv lore - they originally tried the cloak entirely lined in fur, but it was too heavy for Sam to move in!! (Which I can totally believe because mine is super heavy even with a lightweight lining!)

-Now, Simon has never really been able to fall asleep super quickly, but after sex he passes right out.

-And it's not even because the act exhausted him, either. He just has this odd sense of contentment after being with you that lulls him into a more eased mindset, which is very difficult for him to get.

Seven Years Too Soon by NightFuchia. Basically what if a much younger Sonic accidentally set Shadow free from Prison Island. It has awesome characterization and happens to be one of my favorite stories. The rest of Team Sonic is also present

Brotherhood's Twist by @/drawloverlala even though I don't think it counts entirely as Au but it still sort of does. Unbreakable Bond ageswitch due to Zeti's meddling.

Passion's @sonic-tangled-au . I love it! So very much. The lore and backstories are so good.

Noonui's World Restored in Imbalanced Chaos au. Extremely engaging and good. Has a bunch of world building and fun concepts and lore.

Sonic's Super Totally Awesome Mixtape, though it seems to be discontinued, I'm not sure. It's pretty good so far! Takes place in the movie verse.

The Fair Folk by Irritable_Fabulamancer, this fic is one of my favorites! Team Sonic as Fae my beloved! I love fae AUs.

On that note, if you're alright wanting to read a Fae!AU which is pretty much a sonadow fic, there is also I don't believe in fairy tales [but I believe in you and me]. Fantasy and Fae! Satbk inspired, another one that had me hooked.

My Arms Are Blue by thekyuubivixen and its unofficial, fan-continuation (My Arms Are Blue! Final Four Edition) by PlaystationPassenger. The story doesn't completely count as an AU but I'm recommending them anyway cuz they're really really good and has that watching your own show from different dimension trope. It's also hilarious and fun.

Burning Arrow, Wildfire Heart by Taranea is SatSR novelisation AU with Sonic's other friends present too, it's pretty fun. Not very accurate regarding the desert but it's a good read and I come back to reread it often. Must read in my opinion. Just don't dare use it as guide for desert travel or you'll be shriveled up in the sand somewhere

This fic. Read it, I will not elaborate this one. Just trust me :]

Sometimes the Picket Fence isn’t Perfect and Sharp Edges (Sonic Prime AU) series by @/skimmingthesurfaces. I'm holding off the first one to read later, like that one book you've been saving so I'm not sure if it completely counts as an AU, still putting it in recs, and the second one is intriguing so far. I have heard a lot of good thing about the Picket Fence series.

Dark Boom by Smash50. The entirety of Team Dark in the Sonic Boom universe. Alongside it, there's also Boomtober by the same author.

It Always Snows by the 24th by Selendred had me hooked even though it's a oneshot. Great au and would love to see it explored more.

No One said I Wish by SylWritesStuff. One of my fav stories from the Sonic Platonic Fairytale Week event. It's really funny.

Survivor's Resolve by DC111. Not entirely an AU but I must rec this fic it's so good and doea havs some AU vibes.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Attorney of Law by thedraconicwerewolf. Ace Attorney type AU with Sonic and Tails as main characters. Not too adventurous but very very fun and interesting and still managed to keep Sonic in character. Though it has a sequel started, I only rec the main story, not the sequal as it seems to be abandoned and isn't needed to be read like them cliffhanger stories.

beLIEve by Meow21. I have only read snippets from this, waiting for this story to continue but it seems to be discontinued. Felt like an epic story too and deserves to be recommended.

Sonic and the Golden Journey. Sonic gets thrown in another storybook, this time it's a children's classic fairytale. Short but very comedic and fun. Go read it.

Tales of a Samurai. I am begging you to read this one, please it's so good. Also by Taranea.

Wonderful and it's sequal Sanctuary by Inflamore for some Unbreakable Bond angst. (Kindly ignore the obliviousness of earlier ff.net for not knowing the meaning of certain symbols, there's nothing of the sort in story, trust me.)

Regrets by MazzyBooks. A high school au of sorts. Sonic centric with some heavy angst. I'm not kidding about the angst part, trust me. It had me hooked from the first chapter though and I believe it deserves a rec.

You need the cracks (to let the light shine through) by king.needlemouse. Istg this is the most underrated thing I've ever come across, it's one of my absolute favorite fics which I can never forget. Do read it.

Within this Nightmare by sonicfan1990. Sonic get transported to an alternate universe which has gone post apocalyptic and his counterpart in that universe has been dead. Pretty great story, lots of angst and everything.

author’s note: i just thought it would be nice to write some continuation to shoulder nap, so hope you enjoy!

You shifted in your sleep as the sound of a ringing phone reached your ears. Scrunching your face in tiredness and lassitude you opened your eyes that soon got bigger at the sight in front of you. Just inches from your face was Riki, who slept soundly with his arms wrapped around you. You froze realizing you must have dozed off on him. What if you made him uncomfortable? Why didn’t he just wake you up?

Your living room filled with the sound of an incoming call, so you wanted to see who that was but Riki’s grip around your waist tightened.

“Don’t go,” he mumbled half awake and nuzzled his face against yours.

Freezing at his small action you felt how blush tinted your cheeks. What the hell is happening?

“Riki, it’s really late and I think it’s your phone not mine,” you reasoned, hoping it’ll make him let you get up but he lazily shook his head.

“I don’t get to spend time with you almost at all,” he said, voice low from his sleepiness. “And I hate it. If I knew I won’t be able to hang out with you as much as we did earlier, I wouldn't have become an idol.”

“You don’t mean it,” you said after a solid minute of being at loss for words. He dreamt of standing on a stage since you could remember. And now you could see a new side of him, a new smile that performing in front of seas of fans created. You loved watching it, just like you loved him.

“I don’t mean what?” His eyes met yours in the darkness. “Hating not being able to spend time with you or not becoming an idol?”

“Both?” you said quietly, but unfortunately loud enough for him to hear. How he wished he didn’t though.

“When will you finally realize?” he sent an ask into the ether.

You got up nervously and handed him his phone, pretending you didn’t hear his confession-like question. Riki looked up at you slightly sad and resigned and with a sigh took his phone which started ringing again. Accepting the call he heard Jungwon, who was either extremely nervous or furious.

“Riki? Where the hell are you?” His voice reached even your ears through his phone.

“At Y/n’s place, where else?” he snapped back.

“Do you know how late it is? Do you know who gets massive nagging from our manager?” Jungwon asked helplessly, but not hearing any response from the younger he continued after calming down a bit: “Send me her address, I’ll get you a cab.”

“No need to, I’ll get it myself.” Riki ended a call and without a word walked past you to the front door.

“Riki,” you called him before he could step out of your apartment. “Are we okay?”

His eyes filled with hurt looked straight into yours. Not wanting to say too much, he decided to not say anything. He just turned around and closed the door behind him leaving you confused, with a single crack on your heart.

Days passed and not even a single message was exchanged between you two, unusual for your long term friendship. The silence killed you from inside and in frustration of being ignored by him you decided to pay him a surprise visit. Greeting the security that by now knew you pretty well from all the times you watched their dance jam lives or other activities you made your way to the dance studio they always used.

“Y/n?” You heard Jungwon’s voice when you were about to step in. He looked at the determined expression that painted your face and without questioning you he said: “He’s alone. Please solve whatever happened cause he’s being unbearable.” Mumbling the last part he left you in front of the practice room.

You could hear music coming from inside accompanied by a few frustrated grunts. Taking a firm hold on a handle you stepped in. As soon as he saw it was you he stopped his routine and turned around to face you. Looking at him you tried to stay mad, but just like the day you last spoke his eyes showed hurt, making it almost impossible. But somehow you managed to spit out: “Are we gonna talk or you’re going to ignore me again?”

He lowered his head and glued his eyes to his feet. Already familiar silence suffocated you. He finally said weakly: “I like you, Y/n. Screw this, I love you. And I don’t know what else I have to do for you to finally realize that.”

Now it was him who searched for answers in your eyes. But the impact of his words dumbfounded you. So your stupid feelings were reciprocated this whole time?

“What?” you asked in a whisper. Tears brimmed abruptly in your eyes not believing what you just heard. “Say that again.”

The face you put on brought a smile to his lips. He stepped closer to you to the point the tips of your shoes touched.

“I love you.” His hand brushed the strand of your hair away and made you let out a shaky breath.

“Again.” Your voice was even more quiet.

“I love you.” He raised your head by your chin to face him properly.

“Again.”

Riki leaned in, laying a soft kiss on your lips. It took a while for you to respond but when you did both of you melted in each other’s touch. He cupped your cheeks as you placed yours at the back of his neck. Pulling away he leaned his forehead against yours.

“Can’t believe you didn’t see how crazy you made me feel throughout our friendship,” he suddenly chuckled.

“How was I supposed to know?”

“I literally said I wouldn’t become an idol for you, I think it’s quite telling,” he reasoned. “And please, I let you fall asleep on me, why on Earth would I let you do that?”

“Because we’re friends? Friends care about each other,” you said tilting your head.

“I cuddled you, in my arms. You think I cuddle Sunoo to sleep?” He tried to argue convincingly.

“You don’t?”

What's your opinion on all the Jimmy enjoyers and fetish content out there?

Whew, ok, I felt like I was going to get asked this, but not THIS soon.

Ok. I'm totally fine with people liking Jimmy, he's a well written character with a complex array of issues and instincts which drive him forward as well as mysterious background for what really drove him to be in that crew. Most Jimmy enjoyers I meet are actually pretty chill for the most part. Do I like him?

Well...

Not exactly. I do believe in creative choice. People can write whatever they want, even if a lot of it I find disturbing. Jimmy's character made me actually feel upset at multiple points in the game, but thays a sign of just how humanly fucked up he's depicted. He's so human and does messed up but very human things, which makes it all feel real on an unsettling level.

The people I generally do not interact with are the people who FETISHIZE Jimmy's assault of Anya and say stuff like "She probably liked it ngl" like actually that is super gross and I really wasn't planning on bringing it up here, but years ago I myself was taken advantage of by another woman so for my case yes I cannot fathom the type of stuff people say or write with Jimmy. If someone is attracted to Jimmy, stop telling them to see a therapist (I mean, I think we all should after having played this game good lord the game messed with my psyche) while I dont agree with it and I don't understand how people can be attracted to him, it's also not my brain. They may be cringe, but they are free unless they're saying the type of comments I said earlier because they actually get off the internet.

This Fandom is very weird, and I'll admit me writing NSFW for it loops me in somewhat in a taboo spot, but I'm sorry Wrong Organ you made well written kissable polygons.

Before I get asked this next, WHY do I not write for Jimmy?

Just reread what I said earlier on how his involvement in the story, along with how Anya's played in part which hurt me in my soul and you'll understand that I personally cannot write for him without stirring up some unpleasant concepts of my past and just the general overall summary of his actions.

I'll be honest, I really don't want to write Curly either. As someone who worked in a leadership role for 8 years and take classes for my job to continue to do that Curly was a terrible leader 🙃 and made me want to bite chunks off of my keyboard like a Kit Kat. He is barely the lesser evil of Curly, and as a famous statement, I firmly believe

"Bad things happen when good people stand by"

But I will write Curly because why the hell not! I'm personally not attracted to him (first of all I'm a girl kisser, second of all we didn't see get to see him oerate pre-crash aside from playing AS him) But he's a good way to flex my writing muscles and give the masses some of my take on Curly. All the characters would be pretty fun to write for

So Jimmy enjoyers, sorry that you get harassed, but the weirdos, including the non Jimmy, fans need to keep their weird ass comments off of normal posts and not justify SA.

Daisuke I hear people complain about him being infantalized, but you have a bubbly character in any Fandom and they're going to babygirlify them I'm sorry it sucks for his fans but I hope I'm not writing hi that way he's just a silly man in my writing.

Swansea... I don't have much to say on it, a little strange to me that people hunger for a married man, but he's fictional so while I don't feel comfortable writing him romantically Swansea lovers can pop off hope you homies have fun!

Curly. Just the people saying he did nothing wrong. That's just cringe and honestly these are all strange pixel crushes we shouldn't be having but have them anyways so pop off to you homies too.

but after your deployment, you are the one to arrange where the 141 meet up. it's a little ritual you guys have developed to stay connected in between missions, one that makes your friendship seem a bit more real. sometimes the only thing that keeps your eyes open and heart pumping. and since you're an absolute fucking menace, you ask if you can meet around the heart of london- and then drag them all into the nearest bubble tea store you can.

price... doesn't end up liking it. takes a total of two sips, nearly chokes on the pearls, and then sets the cup down. he claims he's been around long enough to know that this- like many other foods, is probably some 'trendy millennial bullshit that'll disappear in a solid few', but that doesn't help ease the insane side eye that he gets from the cashier.

but to your surprise, ghost seems somewhat okay with it. his face doesnt really change (from what you can tell- his mouth is still hidden due to some face mask he put on), but he seems neutral, relaxed, even. he mutters something along the lines of how it isn't too bad, but it doesn't beat a cuppa- to which you chose to ignore, and how he'll probably just stick to having an earl grey in the mornings. but a few months later, you catch him at the same boba store, and you cant help but giggle to yourself.

soap fucking inhales the drink. its genuinely concerning, to say the very least. he seems to like.. unhinge his jaw like some kind of snake, and then inhales the whole drink in what you think is a millisecond. and since he's the only scotsman on the team- thinks the whole 'tea n biscuits' ritual his colleagues have is utter stupidity, so not only does he now FREQUENTLY drink boba because he likes it- he also drinks out of utter spite.

gaz is the only one with a seemingly respectable opinion about boba, unfortunately. he's had it before, multiple times- it appeals to his sweet tooth and is the occasional treat after long missions. but unlike you, gaz does not value peace, and seems to keep egging soap on in chugging unreasonable amounts of the drink. (and he doesnt mention it, as he does not want to face the same punishment as you did, but he thinks that bubble tea is sometimes, just sometimes better than his cuppa.)

Soapprice is such an underrated pairing. I feel like it was more popular in the fandom whith the OGs, but it definitely has been neglected with the reboots. They're all just so special to me though 🥺

I think Price does enjoy being called daddy, though I don't see him as being the type to ask you to say it. He's into it, but he wants you to say it first on your own. He's definitely more dominant, but I could see him giving over control every so often. Like if a mission goes wrong or something happens he doesn't want to be in control anymore for a while. I could also see him being into bondage/shibari. He likes the trust you have to have in each other and he also just likes seeing you tied up. Definitely a brat tamer. He'll bend you over his knee and spank you if you misbehave. Edges you if you're especially naughty.

Johnny likes having his hair pulled, that's a given. Please degrade him. Step on him, call him a naughty boy. He also has a huge praise kink. Giving, receiving, he loves it. He might get rough with you in bed if you ask him, once that trust has been established, but you're definitely going to have to reassure him for hours after that you're alright. Pigeon Puberty

There’s many challenges surrounding introducing a new pigeon into your life, and one of the most difficult of them is something that simply can’t be avoided.

Puberty.

We’ve all been through it - or, depending on our age, we’re going through it, or are doomed to go through it. And pigeons are much the same.

The famed rebellious attitudes and antisocial tendencies of human puberty are apparently not confined to us. Pigeons in their first year go through this too! And it’s miserable. Don’t want kids? Surprise, you get a taste of being a parent anyway.

It’s very hard to prepare for puberty. Even if you’ve already been through it - even if you’ve been through it multiple times - it’s never easy, and it never feels good. It’s easy to feel like it’s your fault. That you failed.

But you haven’t. I promise.

This guide is about surviving your pigeon’s puberty: what to expect, what to accept, and what you can do about any of it.

Baby Steps: Independence Day

Most of you will never need this section, but just enough of you will that it’s worth including.

A scenario I’ve seen on several occasions now is “This baby pigeon in my life was cuddling with me, and now wants nothing to do with me! What happened!”

This is really normal. Baby pigeons, somewhere around 7-12 weeks (maybe earlier, maybe later), will decide they don’t want to hang out with you. They’ll suddenly be afraid of your hands. They might try to snap or bite or slap you for the first time in their lives.

This is just a phase they go through. Not all of them will, but it’s extremely standard that it’s not at all a mistake to expect it. Don’t take it personally. They’ll come back around.

During this time, limit handling and any forced interaction. You can make them hand-shy by intruding too much on their personal space in this time.

Any interaction they initiate is fine, just allow them to exit if they want to. Instructions down below on the “DON’Ts” of “Hell Period pigeons” will also apply here.

Overall, just be patient and understanding. They’ll come around.

Puberty Part One: The Precursor To Reproduction

Before animals can produce offspring, they have to sexually mature. They might not be totally mature after they are capable of reproducing, but what matters to evolution is passing on your genes. And pigeons can pass on their genes very early.

It’s not at all unusual for pigeons to be entirely capable of having their own babies by the time they’re 6 months old. Or earlier. The earliest I have personally seen a hen reach sexual maturity (laying an egg) is a few days before she turned 4 months old.

That’s not necessarily always the case. Some pigeons won’t sexually mature until they’re a year old. But that gives you an idea of the wide window we’re working with.

Any pigeon who has sexually matured has completed the “Hell Period” of their puberty already. This is the time period you are most likely to notice. So what is the Hell Period?

The Hell Period will contain some or all of these “symptoms” in most pigeons:

-Extreme anti-social behavior

-Endless window-gazing

-Intense, unpredictable moodiness

-Unusual flightiness or being easily scared

-Aggression or biting too much (beyond driving)

-Spending a lot of time on top of cabinets or ceiling fans

-Ignoring any previously taught commands

-Lost interest in receiving treats

-Higher-than-usual stubbornness

-Greater need for personal space

-Hating hands suddenly

-Nervousness displayed to adult birds (even parents) or other young birds they don’t know well

It’s also not unusual for them to begin to molt at some point during this significant chunk of their maturation. Molting already can make them moody, but obviously in this case it’s sort of one more straw on the camel’s back for them.

It’s possible I’ve missed or forgotten an aspect of the Hell Period, but I think you get the gist.

We’ll call the portion of their maturation that contains the Hell Period and leads up to them producing eggs and sperm sexual maturation, just to be clear.

So how long does this sexual maturation process last?

Well, that can be a little difficult to tell. The process begins and ends with an on-and-off ramp (think a parable graph, or a bridge), and that means that it’s difficult to tell when the process is starting, and it’s difficult to tell when it is ending.

Generally, it seems like the Hell Period lasts maybe a month to a month and a half. It’s hard to give a more concrete answer without concrete data. I have to do my best with guessing.

But if I have to estimate, I wouldn’t be surprised if the process as a whole lasted more like 2 and a half months (maybe less, maybe more), and we just can’t accurately see the beginning and end.

So how do you handle it?

It can be very hard to emotionally handle the Hell Period. Everyone finds it difficult. A tiny, tiny number of pigeons have sexual maturations so tame they aren’t even noticed at all, but they aren’t common enough that you can reasonably hope you just happened to get one.

It’s easy to feel rejected, or like you’ve done something wrong. I want to reassure you that you haven’t. It will get better. Your pigeon will come back around. I promise. Someday you will hardly believe they ever were like this.

As for what you can do in the meantime, well, it is pretty simple.

Not much! But that’s okay.

Your best bet with a pigeon going through Hell Period is to simply make yourself available. Don’t force interaction. Don’t push into their space. Just hang out in the same room, and give them the opportunity to come to you.

I know, it’s sounding a lot like human parenting once I put it down on paper. But I promise, it’s your best option. You’ll avoid increasing any reactivity, and create opportunities for positive associations. You’ll also notice better when they’re pulling out of their raging hormones - they’ll come to you more often, and you will see a light out of the darkness.

Here’s a small list of Don'ts for pigeons in their Hell Period, to preserve your bonding progress and their wellbeing down the line. Don't create a hand-shy bird!

DON’T:

-Put pants/flypers/harnesses on a HPP (Hell Period pigeon)

-Overhandle a HPP

-Try to force a HPP to spend time with you

-Try to desensitize a HPP to hands if they’re scared - it can wait

-Force a HPP to take treats from your hands - just put them down where the HPP can get to them comfortably

-Try to continue training with an HPP that previously worked but now doesn’t - just wait, they’ll become reasonable again

-Be impatient

-Take it personally

There’s not a lot you can do except avoid mistakes and preserve your own feelings. And that’s okay. That’s normal.

It’s unfortunate that most people don’t get adequately warned about how hard puberty is before they get a pigeon. They’re fantastic animals, and great pets, but it’s so hard to be prepared for the Hell Period, and it’s even harder if you just don’t know about it.

What are signs the Hell Period is ending?

It’s not very easy to tell the Hell Period is ending. Like I said above, the off ramp is hard for us to see. But I’ll do my best to offer some things you can look for.

Signs:

-HPPs (Hell Period pigeons) tend to molt during this time, and I think they tend to molt closer to the end of the Hell Period than the beginning

-More good days than bad days, however that exhibits

-Less window-gazing

-More interest in social behaviors, whether with you or other pigeons

-A decrease in how easily they are startled

-Spending more time on the floor

-Regaining some food motivation

-Decreased unmanageable aggression

-Increase in courtship behaviors

You may be uncertain whether or not your pigeon is pulling out of the HP for quite some time, and then one day realize that it happened while you weren’t looking. It’s a strange process.

The Hell Period is the hardest part of maturation, but it isn’t the only part.

Puberty Part Two: It’s Not Easy Being Beautiful

When the Hell Period ends, it is at about that time they are sexually mature - they can reproduce, have offspring - way more than you think they should be capable of, in fact.

But they’re not done yet. Which is normal. Many species do not stop “baking” the second we become physically capable of producing offspring - humans are one of them. We continue changing years after we check that capability box. The same for dogs (which can take years to drop their chests) or deer (who don’t reach their physical prime well past being capable).

So what’s going on, then? How does this affect us?

The short of it is this: it’s mostly the boys, as far as I can tell. And it makes them bastards.

What’s their deal?

I don’t know exactly what is happening in there, hormone wise. But males change significantly in their first 2 years - they don’t seem to hit their full size until sometime around then. And that’s a bit conservative. It may be a bit more like 2 and a half to 3.

But at the very least, by 2 years they have enough nailed down that they’re not so much.

A young male is a handful. He needs to be managed. He needs attention at all times, and if he doesn’t get it, he may be unruly. He follows the rules less. He’s generally more aggressive for no reason. He shows off all the time.

This may sound familiar.

But an adult male is more reserved. He spends more time in his nest box with his spouse. He causes less problems in the flock. He is doing the managing. And, at his age, unless he’s tragically outmatched, he has the body mass to back it up.

Because of the size difference a male can experience between the different points of his life, if you are putting a harness, flyper, or pants on him, it's important that the fit be monitored as he grows larger. That, or wait until he reaches full size to get him one.

The body mass difference between a 6 month old, 1 year old, and 2 and a half year old male at different points in his life can be pretty staggering.

So people can wonder: why can’t my boy calm down? How do I make him relax?

When will my boy chill???

The tentative consensus is that it takes at least 2 years for a male pigeon to finish baking, aka, let his hormones settle down. Again, it might be quite a bit more than that.

Theoretically, he should be getting better and calmer that whole time. Maybe he will backslide here and there when his hormones jump.

But in my experience, a 1 year old is more tolerable than a 6 month old, and a 1 and a half year old is more tolerable than a 1 year old, and a 2 year old is more- you get it.

He will calm down. He won’t always be so excitable. I can’t say that I have a lot of advice for you here. But maybe it will help knowing that like any bouncy puppy, he won’t stay that way forever.

Other fun facts:

The temperaments of pigeons are not the only things that change through their physical maturation!

As I mentioned, their body mass/weight increases with age - up to a certain point.

The feather quality of adult birds is also markedly different (and better) than that of juveniles. With an experienced eye you can sometimes guess between under 3 months old, 6 months to a year old, and above a year, by the difference. Adults are much sleeker than babies, who look more “fuzzy.”

Eye pigment brightness apparently reaches peak brightness at about a year old, but you can tell what it is pretty early on. A couple months. Of course, this brightening only occurs in the wild type (orange) eyes and pearl eyes, and not bull eyes.

People always forget that he is in fact a complete ass with a massive superiority-inferiority complex and not just a sad boi, or they overplay the weeb part and ignore how he has other interests like science and art, or they make him too pathetic by assuming he would still be a blushing incoherent mess like a year into marriage, etc. Anyway, it’d just be nice to hear the headcanons of an actual Idia fan since that’s the only way to get anything sane.

🎧 Idia definitely finds confort in the rain and gloom weather. Really, he just enjoys typically gloomy things. It's extremely comforting and relaxing to him to just be able to sit on his bed with his headphones on while it rains harshly outside, making the world around him dark and gloomy.

🎮 Curses, like a lot. Gamer rage is real you guys and he definitely has it. If he loses a game too many times or gets too frustrated with his teammates, he'll curse like a sailor. His anger isn't directly to his teammates or anything, it's of him being frustrated with everything in general.

There is no sidestepping this issue, which is why fans who can't tolerate criticism of the character resort to these false accusations, or single out a handful of hateful comments the character gets over the legitimate critiques. It's become so transparent to me -- thank you for continuing to point it out, honestly.

Right, like these are also immortal, eternal, immensely powerful beings! They're different from the gods but again, if the issue is a power differential, then why are titans exempt?

One also has to acknowledge that Ashton told the entire Accord they served the weak and then when Ka'Mort said the weak would be "remade" he was like "yeah sounds great". I even at an earlier point said that Ashton isn't hypocritical, they're just prioritizing their own pain, which they've largely misplaced on the gods when it was in fact largely due to multiple shitty mortals, most of whom were either also seeking the power of the titans (the Hishari) or at least doing business with the Ruby Vanguard (Jiana), or as far as we know totally secular (Greymoore Asylum...where they ended up because of the Hishari).

If you are an internet stranger and you're like "well I relate to this character so if you don't like them I am sad" it's like, why the fuck do you think you're inherently likeable? Like yeah actually if you agree with that statement and don't see any issue with it, I think you're someone who at the very best is worryingly susceptible to indoctrination by fascists, and that's not someone I want to be around!
