ok sure i'll talk about farleigh start. i'll talk about his tragedy of never being enough as it were and then having to deal with fucking oliver. sure. disclaimer: it's about class (and race) and the horrible reality of the rich. the horrible reality of living as farleigh.
another disclaimer: i'm white! and poc definitely pick up on everything i'm talking about here as it is, and better. i was and am specifically interested in farleigh vs. oliver but it's impossible to examine without considering race. definitely let me know if anything abt this sucks!
farleigh and oliver are similar. it's annoying because every intruder that is not himself is annoying, partly because felix's attention swaying from farleigh is dangerous; there is always a threat of being discarded, even if no precedent existed. the potential is terrifying.
but you'd think he's seen this before, every summer (if venetia is telling the truth) or at least often enough to learn to recognize it fast, so he should know this will pass. part of it is i think still the deep anxiety, and i think he hated every boy that was there before, and it is sort of routine.
but definitely a huge factor in farleigh's annoyance is the fact that he's a biracial (black for cattons, that's all they see) man in a white rich household. he's alert and exhausted all the time. of course he's angry at oliver, regardless of whether he's the first to crash at saltburn for the summer or the fifty-first.
but the important thing is this.
farleigh is very jealous of and angry and pissed at oliver because farleigh sees all the similarities between them. outsider, in financial trouble, whatever it is, in need of cattons; and yet oliver is preferred. and farleigh seems to be the only one to really consider it. felix does not pick up on the hint when farleigh brings up the birthday party vs. his mother. felix's clumsy "different or... anything like that" is as much about race as it is about class, of course. the "we've done all that we can" bit is felix absolving himself of guilt because surely they had, surely the mysterious collective cattons that he's not really part of had tried all they could do. to him, farleigh is different from oliver, because farleigh has been helped. felix is rich and white and twofold uncomfortable with farleigh, even if he's nice about it, even if he genuinely enjoys his company; he doesn't look too close at farleigh because he feels too guilty to come too close. and farleigh can't do anything about it. he can't nice himself into it. the fucking tragedy of him is that he's never enough in the world of the ultra-rich white, even if (especially because!) he's born into it.
farleigh is very pissed at oliver because farleigh also sees all the differences between them. you know who can be nice poor white enough to fit in? fucking oliver. felix says "just be yourself, they'll love you" when oliver first moves in. farleigh was also probably told the same thing, and felix also probably believed that farleigh could just be himself, but even if the cattons were magically not racist at all (impossible), it wouldn't make a difference to farleigh. he would still self-censor, keep in check, be in dangerous waters (because racism is not just about the individual, but about the system). we see that he'd won himself leeway by years of trial and error by the way he speaks to the family, but it's still within the boundaries of acceptable, built by the cattons. he's part of them because they allow it, and farleigh is very, very aware.
the annoying thing is oliver can be himself. like, truly, genuinely, he can just be. and farleigh can't help but envy that.
as a side note, oliver is obviously jealous of farleigh in the beginning as well, because regardless of the reality of farleigh's situation, he was born into it, and hence, at least in oliver's mind, has his position solidified. oliver's whole thing is unquenchable thirst and hunger for whatever and everything the cattons have (including themselves!). he wishes to have been a catton from birth. to oliver, at first, there's nothing farleigh can really do to lose it. and until he figures out the cattons completely, he can't help but envy that.
but i think farleigh senses something different about oliver early on. at least on the level of the text, we have "you're almost passing [for] a real, human boy", which is so important because farleigh is the first to point out oliver's weirdness. the next to do so is venetia in the bath scene calling him a freak, but it's too late. farleigh is too early.
and i like to think he clocks oliver too early because he sees the jagged edges that he recognizes in himself. i think that one other thing that farleigh envies is oliver's freedom to let go. freedom to let go is very similar to freedom to be, but not quite the same.
to be is about perception: farleigh knows he cannot fall out of line, but would like to, and oliver does not have to worry about it at all (i mean, he does, because oliver also performs for felix, but farleigh doesn't know that).
to let go is about the self: farleigh is too scared to even want what oliver eventually does, to even consider the possibility. oliver can let himself want. oliver can let himself act. oliver just can do things and want things. i'm not sure farleigh can.
and so in this scene, when oliver's wants and actions have landed him nowhere with farleigh, felix, venetia, the cattons, of course farleigh gloats. he can let himself do that, because if the cattons are slowly discarding him, farleigh can allow himself this one small victory. he's relieved because despite the dangerous similarities, oliver is, thankfully, not really the same as farleigh, right?
but like. this movie is a love letter to all things gothic. oliver is a white man. he prevails. the brief performance that oliver put on did eventually end up more effective than farleigh's lifetime of constraint. my heart fucking breaks for him to be honest.
the issue that remains is the fact of farleigh's survival. i like to think that oliver came to respect him. oliver is smart, but farleigh is clever. he picks up on everything oliver does (to refer back to the karaoke scene, farleigh immediately retaliates in the cleverest way, in the moment), and he's the only one to do so consistently (venetia, again, for example, comes close, but too late; oliver doesn't like that, there's nothing to work with). hence, stay with me for a little longer, the paradox: farleigh survives because he was never enough for the cattons, but he is very worthy of oliver's attention. in his own freaky way, oliver wants him. look at that.
so. farleigh. farleigh might come back. he always comes back. and i think oliver wants to try harder next time.
#saltburn#farleigh start#i think someone mentioned how the race commentary was fleeting in that scene abt his mom but i disagree#it runs thru the whole movie#because oliver is white and because they're pitted against each other#im not saying its the best commentary ever and also like the movie is not about it at all#but it's there and it's pretty prominent#also on a completely different note can we talk about how oliver correctly assumed everyone at saltburn desires him carnally#dude pulled all the bitches by being strange and off-putting. i mean i completely get it. completely get it. i'd fold so fast you've no ide#also while i was writing i realized that yes indeed both farleigh and oliver perform for felix and its so fascinating#and it works for oliver because of course it does because hes white#anyway! again! let me know if this sucks#in like any way at all#i needed a masterpost of all and every thought i have about farleigh#i think this pretty much covers it so i'll let it go now#HES SO. like do you UNDERSTAND#the DEFINITION of doomed by the narrative but i LOVE that he survives#as he SHOULD#emerald is so right. he does come back and quickstart just torture each other in that house forever. besties for life#god im gonna shut up now this is so horrendously long#mine#saltburn journaling

I say this in the nicest way possible, some of you need to be patient and learn to focus on other things.
There's a lot of freaking out over how Paramount screwed up Sonic 3's marketing, when most films don't release their first trailer until four months before release. This was the case for the last movie, it's perfectly normal.
"It's hard to stay hyped" no one is asking you to be hyped the entire time. Take a break, focus on other interests, you'll have something to be hyped about soon enough.
I understand hearing about that Cinemacon teaser got us all expecting a trailer, and that the silence can be frustrating. Let's try to remain calm and not snap at each other over this.
#sonic movie 3#sonic movie#sorry it's just that with every bit of small news about the movie I see so much anger over the lack of trailer#breathe. it's okay. it'll come#it's silly how some people are going HOW CAN PARAMOUNT EXPECT US TO BE HYPED WHEN THEY HAVEN'T GIVEN US NOTHING#like...they're not even selling the movie to you yet#no one is expecting you to be hyped already. You're going to have more information before you decide if you will buy a ticket#because that's how movies work

I don't like any of the maps I've seen for HTTYD so i'm playing a puzzle game w all the locations. This is the 3rd version so far
#httyd#how to train your dragon#httyd map#rtte#race to the edge#mm i already see things i wanna change lmao#the red circle is the are where the Red Death has control#not every dragon in there is under her control but all the dragons of her flock stay there so it's the area where dragon raids happen#i don't believe in the 3rd movie so there's no hidden world but if there WAS i'd put it there hence the ()#also i saw someone saying how funny itd be if hiccup's sarcastic narration of the 1st movie's opening scene was actually the names of place#hence ''freezing to death'' ''hopeless'' and especially ''the meridian of misery''#idk how i feel abt the bewilderbeast under berserker island so instead they're barely located in the red death's territory hence the lack o#raids#and since they're not in war w the dragons n don't get raided they have more people and can actually afford resources and time to things#like fighting other ppl and pillaging like actual vikings#the upper square is the map that berk&berserkers&freezing to death etc use#they're all p concerned w the dragon raids so there's not much energy put to exploring or interacting w Other ppl#n traders rarely go there#they're the weirdos who've settled too close to a dragon nest in the north#n the lower square is the map viggo has and where his Dragon Hunters mainly operate#im thinking of shifting that more to the right to put the rookery where the 'northern markets' currently are#also something that bothers me is that we never rly explore any normal villages#like we've got berk&the berserkers. then we've got uhh 2 dragon-friendly islands the dragon hunters and drago#like who is buying all that dragon product? who are the tribes of the other chieftains in the meeting drago burned down?#where is everyone???

So what do you think Claudia's favourite movie is?
#claudia#spark in the dark#i think from what we've seen she likes going to the movies a lot#like she could have probably never have afforded to see one pre turning so in the beginning after she sees her first motion picture#she begs to be taken to one every night#after a few years she finds contentment in going alone#anyway i have her pegged as a romcom/romance fan#or movies so bad they're actually good#she would have been an avid 'bringing up baby' defender when the critics at the time panned it#modern!au claudia would do a live reaction of 2024 nosferatu while doing her makeup then laugh so much her eyeliner goes off course#while the movie is being critically acclaimed everywhere else

hiccup and astrid only works for me if they're written as foils. Hiccup is a soft hearted pacifist who has to learn to make tough calls. Astrid is a hard core warrior who has to learn compassion. they both admire the other for their strengths, and by some combination of striving to be more like each other, and hitting the breaks when one of them goes too far in one direction, they manage to meet in the middle and work really well together
#astrid makes sure Hiccup doesn't let people get away with misusing his trust#and Hiccup makes sure Astrid doesn't burn every bridge ever over issues that could be solved#httyd#vitpost#hiccstrid#im watching the show again and I straight up can't get over how much better it handles their dynamic compared to the movies#could it be that I spent more time with the show versions of them in between waiting for the movies#and so got attached to that characterization which led me to misinterpret the original depiction of their relationship? maybe.#but also not rly because the dynamic im talking about is very much present in the first film and then further supported#by the Gift of the Night Fury short#so really it just feels like the second film didn't rly know what to do with Astrid and kind of sidelined her#and then by the third movie they'd forgotten her personality too#They're Cute in the movies though I'll give them that. but that does not satisfy the aroace viewer :)#I need them to Make Sense too

hey Dira I’m reading dracula and all the protagonists are acting like they’re madly in love with each other. it’s great. world’s most gothic polycule.
You would fit in perfectly with everyone who participated in Dracula Daily last year, just so you know. I think every 5th post I saw was about their polycule (an exaggeration but it was an incredibly prolific concept)
I once saw someone say something about how they hadn't realized before, but so much of Dracula (the novel) is about the humanity we see in everyone. How in all the places we visit, all the fleeting characters passing by, they are filled with this active care for the world around them. They worry for a lost dog, they share stories and advice to the younger generation, they fret over the health of someone close to them, they give everything they have in the hope that things will be better for someone else someday.
And I think that's captured in the main character's interactions as well. The kind of outward, eager active attempts to connect with and understand and care for each other in whatever capacity they can is so different from what so many of us have experienced. Because they are all madly in love with each other because they're all madly in love with being alive and seeing people thrive and prosper and be happy. And they all care about each other. And all the background characters care about each other because they all care about the world and want it to be good.
I'm getting away from myself, but the ever present hope and happiness and attempts at connection in this world are, to me, a very crucial part of the novel and something that can get lost in adaptations. I hope you enjoy your experience with the novel, as I certainly did :)
#dracula#dracula daily#quil's queries#solreefs#it certainly wasn't present in bram stokers dracuIa. the 1990s movie#i. do not like that adaptation#it leans 100% into the vampirism as seduction and sexual. and like. yeah that's a common interpretation#but they do so at the expense of the rest of the story#the polycule aren't a polycule in that one they're at best friend of a friend who met yesterday#oh I dislike so many things about it#mina kissed van helsing! and dracula! ugh. i can't even with it i hate it so much. more so with every thought

read a screen rant article that argued that future knives out movies should feature recurring characters to "flesh out blanc's character" and "make him a more interesting lead" and that "all detectives need a team"........ what if i killed you lol
#BLANC IS NOT MEANT TO BE THE LEAD‼️‼️ HE MAY SEEM LIKE IT#BUT KNIVES OUT WAS MARTA'S MOVIE. GLASS ONION WAS HELEN'S.#THE WORKING-CLASS WOCS FUCKED OVER BY THE RICH CHARACTERS. THOSE ARE THE PROTAGONISTS#or at any rate they're the real heroes. not blanc. he's the one who ties it all together sure but his goal is to help THEM.#also 'every detective needs a team' my ass. have you people ever watched columbo. aka one of the shows rian johnson#is most inspired by in his whodunnit work.#knives out is very reminiscent of agatha christie yes but it also owes a LOT to columbo#and part of that is the mysterious detective whose personal life you never really see.#look i want to see blanc talk to his husband as much as the next guy. in fact i think that should happen!#but it should ideally be brief. it shouldn't overshadow the real focus of these movies: the marginalized and working-class#getting their revenge on the rich bitches who've wronged them.#if you want a phillip-focused movie i think that COULD work. but only if they made sure to keep those themes front and centre.#it wouldn't be the same otherwise!#that's how i feel at least. genuinely no hate if you disagree i totally get the desire for blanc development#i want some too. i like character-focused stories#but i really feel like these movies aren't meant to focus on him too much

no bro the beauty of rottmnt is that there ISN’T one specific brother who actually REALLY has all the common sense trying to herd the other 3 like wayward children.
the beauty of rottmnt is that they are ALL idiots and all GET to be idiots and they pass the reasonable brain cell around depending on the shenanigans they’re up to. i won’t take this slander and erasure of any of their rights to be complete and sincere dumbasses. they are STUPID and they are COMPETENT, each of them, as individuals and as a unit
#rottmnt#rise of the tmnt#rottmnt movie#i mean this is gonna happen w every ensemble show theres always gonna be the most popular fan fave getting all the credit#but its esp insulting in rise lmfao like#'oh leo has all the common sense if u really think about it' leo cut warren stone in half and accidentally portaled pirates to tahiti#'raph is the only one with the brain cell' raph panic ate his phone once raph wanted to strap hawks to their feet for skates#'donnie' u mean constant barely restrained violence boy? created sentient robo children on accident TWICE boy?#mikey 'whoa this bridge is so rickety LETS SEE HOW FAR IT SWINGS BABY' peak baby brother boy???#like the fun in it is so much in that they all have moments where they shine and moments where they're STUPID TEEN BOYS#and ykw april included she's the fifth sibling!!!!!!!#she's just as chaotic as any of them!!!!#you know who in this family had solid reasonable brain cells? gram gram#end of list

the thing about romcoms is just- it's never meant to be 'is it believable?' but instead 'do you believe it?' do you believe these two characters are actually falling in love with each other??? do you believe their chemistry??? do you believe whatever obstacle is thrown in their way is legitimately something that might keep them apart for a time and not something that could be solved with one conversation?? do you believe that they believe they need to fake date for this very specific reason??? do you believe the reason why they're 'enemies' at the start, no matter how silly a misunderstanding it may be??? do you believe the grand romantic gesture fits the characters and is actually how one character would show their love to the other?? like!!!! it's about empathy and authenticity and feeling what the characters feel so strongly that even if it's a trope or a cliché it doesn't matter because you believe it
#this is what separates a good romcom from a bad romcom for me#if the conventions of the genre are used in a way that feels authentic to the characters then it'll never feel cheesy#one of my biggest pet peeves is some of the romcoms of the last decade who have this real 'we're not like other romcoms' energy#where they try to act like they're Different and move away from the usual tropes but it's shit bc that's not the point!!!!#those tropes and conventions are staples of the genre for a reason#it's how you utilise them and incorporate them that matters#like fuck me i hate action movies but i know if i go see one there's a 99% chance there'll be a car chase scene#bc that's usually a staple feature of an action movie and i mean idc but that's fine bc i know it has a function in the story to increase#the tension#and even at that someone who really loves action movies could probably tell me the difference between a good car chase scene & a subpar one#in the same way that just saying something is fake dating doesn't automatically make it good#but if i believe it and i'm in it with the characters? oh boy i'm about to feel so dELIGHTED for the next 90 minutes thank you so much#anyway i'm rewatching the lost city and every second of this movie is so silly in a fun way and fantastical but oH BOY DO I BELIEVE IT#mine

Special interest? Triggered.
I will now talk about the movie breakfast club for 4 hours straight.
#no literally this is one of my favorite movies#i related to it so much as a teenager#the trauma school brings? the awful home lives? the teacher being a bad person? realizing you're not alone?#yes please. more of that.#im serious i could go on for hours#i could talk about the entire meaning of the movie and still go in depth on each and every character#when is say this movie is a special interest I MEAN IT#also they're all so queer and i firmly believe they should be in a polycule#the breakfast club#special interest#claire standish#john bender#allison reynolds#andrew clark#brian johnson#its so frustrating when people miss the point of this movie because it holds so many important messages that kids still relate to today#and we as adults should listen to and try to make better for them#ok im done talking(for now)#aml speaks#autistic#autism

not to be true crime posting on main but i think i'm falling down the wm3 rabbit hole again
#xenia.txt#when i tell you this case keeps me up at night to this day#not even the murders themselves as much as the general public's reception to and opinions on the case 3 decades later like#i get why it;s always been so divisive especially after the pl docus came out (lots of opinions on those btw none of them are good#from the bottom of my heart fuck you joe berlinger and bruce sinofsky)#but it's truly baffling how no one is willing to do the research on what is arguably THE most well documented true crime case in recent#history like. everything that's ever been released to the general public is available online and i mean everything#you can find all the court files trial transcripts depositions interogation tapes aerial photos you name it it's out there for anyone with#internet connection to access at any and all hours of the day#and yet people are still foaming at the mouth fighting on reddit abt their innocence based off nothing but a couple of movies like#bffr with me right now!! almost every point the innocenters make can be easily debunked by scrolling through callahan for 15 minutes#'but they've been pushing for dna testing since their release so they can't be guilty' baby the case is closed!#it's been closed the second they took the plea. they can be striking under that courthouse and it still won't change a thing and they knowi#that's why they're pushing for it in the first place but that's just my opinion#^ and i say they but it's really only echols which makes a lot of sense to me personally#and if you want to talk abt dna testing let's talk abt the one that was done in 2011 and how the defense hurried to propose the plea as soo#as they got the results! let's talk abt those cause no one's ever seen them and i would very much like to#braga share the results the people want to know!!#makes me wonder which pieces of evidence they even submitted for that 2011 testing because if i'm remembering correctly#there was one that would've closed this case instantly and maybe that's why the results were never disclosed and the plea was rushed#but that's also just my opinion#and it's also interesting how the majority of people who have in fact deep dived into this case#(and i'm not talking abt big true crime youtubers as i'm very sceptical abt their research abilities)#all collectively lean towards guilty. much to think about#i was hoping someone would make another ~actually~ unbiased documentary for the 30th anniversary and go over all the case files#but i don't think that's even realistic at this point seeing as everyone and their mother has some sort of an opinion on this case#hbo deserves another lawsuit for this. they should've never won the first one in the first place#true crime tw
