#or misconceptions which may arise

Note
I saw your post about FATE, and it reminded me that whenever Ive come across it its always had a vibe with how its written and talked about.
There seems to be 'nerds playing around the table together' feel of some games and a 'fellow auteurs performing their characters' feel to others.
Is that a fair assessment of FATE vs D&D? I swear I see a rhetorical 'numbers and mechanics vs character and creativity' divide in the OSR and Indie ttrpg scenes as well, but I dont know if thats me with my limited play experience
(With reference to this post here.)
The whole "mechanics versus creativity" thing has very little to do with the relationships between players and and their characters, though it's often mischaracterised as such.
You may have seen a recent post where I talk at some length about game rules have baked-in assumptions about what kinds of stories they should be used to tell, which can potentially disagree with what kinds of stories the game's group wants to explore, and how, if that disagreement is large enough, it can create a situation where engaging with the rules and engaging with the narrative are mutually exclusive activities.
Basically, "mechanics versus creativity" is a dysfunctional way of thinking about games that arises from having had one's formative experience of tabletop roleplaying with groups that, for whatever reason, were using rules whose baked-in assumptions about how the story ought to go strongly disagreed with how the group wanted it to go. It's not a real thing – it's a binary that only exists in the context of this disagreement.
(In practice, of course, most of the time those formative experiences with system-versus-group mismatches will have occurred in the context of Dungeons & Dragons, simply because it's the most common "first game". Folks who've escaped from that situation often erroneously conclude that having to constantly fight against the rules to tell the story you want to tell is something that's intrinsic to or caused by some particular feature of the rules of D&D. This error can lead to... interesting design decisions when people labouring under this misconception go on to create their own games!)

Emperor, Stelmane and Gargauth
Sorry I haven't been posting, I got hyperfixated on this theory. Drawings will resume from now
If you’ve completed the game, there’s a chance you know of the reveal that Emperor’s previous associate, Duke Stelmane, has been in fact his thrall. Upon further inspection you may gain some seemingly contradicting information and lots of questions with no answers. This post will be long, but I promise that at the end, most of these questions will be answered. Also, there are pictures.
TLDR: Emperor and Stelmane used to be besties before he enthralled her, but they couldn't defeat Gargauth with their power of friendship.
So, for the uninitiated, what are these questions?
Firstly, when the party enters Rivington and Dream Visitor is revealed to be the Emperor, he will tell us about his life, including that he was partners with Stelmane, though he doesn’t say anything about the thrall bit of course. At this point neither he nor the party knows the Duke is dead. As far as the Emperor is concerned, what he shared might greatly compromise him and he never shares such information when he simply could’ve concealed it.
If you poke around, other questions may arise, such as why was Stelmane’s condition improving after the Emperor's visits? Why was she asking for him? Why was she excitedly talking about him at the Tavern? Why did they hug? Why was she at Elfsong, where he could find her the most easily? Why did she drink wine, which he used to force her to do? Why didn’t she warn anyone about him? Why was she looking through people before the stroke? Why would the Emperor mind control her? Why does he keep her portrait next to his desk? Is he stupid?
Now that I have you hooked (probably), let's introduce our cast.
Emperor – The one and only, our favorite topic for daily arguments. Sluttiest waist in game.
Duke Belynne Stelmane – Gods’ most perfect princess. We all agree to fuck the Emperor for what he did to her (some of us literally). She used to be a member of the Council of Four[1] as well as leader of Baldur’s Gate branch of Knights of the Shield[2]. Had ties to Hhune patriar family, possibly even related. Low levels of waist sluttiness.
Gargauth – better known as the Hidden Lord, a powerful pit fiend imprisoned in the Shield of the Hidden Lord. His portfolio includes betrayal, cruelty, political corruption and power brokers[3]. The Shield has been kept underneath Baldur’s Gate for over a century, spreading corruption in the city due to his presence alone. Such is his influence, that on the condition he’s taken away from the city, the crime rate might drastically drop[1]. He is known to have been communicating through the Shield with a past leader of the Knights, providing him with valuable information and helping the order grow in power while trying to gain worship[3]. Only some of the Hhune family and the highest rank members of the Knights knew about his existence, though in the present day no one is aware of his infernal identity[2]. Gargauth will try to steer his current owner towards acts of cruelty and domination in hopes of condemning their soul to the Nine Hells[1]. In the “Descent into Avernus” ttrpg one of the baddies wants to use the Shield to drag Baldur’s Gate into Avernus in the same fashion it happened for Elturel, but a party of adventurers takes it away before this evil plan is realized[1]. No information on waist sluttiness due to being imprisoned in a shield.
Now that I established myself as a squid fucker and Stelmane as a leader of a devil-worshipping organization, I know what you’re thinking – I’m gonna say that the Emperor had to enthrall this evil cult leader to save the city. Haha, no. Keep reading. Here, have a meme so I don’t lose your attention.
I must begin by clearing some misconceptions. It’s easy to assume that because of the Stelmane scene, all the Emperor told us about her up to that point was a lie. It wasn’t. They had a functional relationship before the mind control took place. (If you already know this, feel free to skip to the next meme.) There are two notes in the game pointing us to that conclusion: a journal found in Hhune mausoleum commonly attributed to Stelmane and a transcribed conversation heard in Elfsong tavern.
This existence of a past relationship also explains the portrait of Stelmane that the Emperor keeps next to his desk and one of his dialogue options when the PC hugs him in act 2.
Later, in act 3, he also has some lines painting a vague picture of the relationship’s nature.
So she was beginning to trust him before he caused the stroke. This makes things so much more messed up.
There’s still one written document, which doesn’t make sense, namely Patient Log:
This is clearly written after the Emperor took mental possession of her and caused a stroke. Why then does he help her and why does she keep asking for him?
Have you ever gone into the Hhune mausoleum and saw this note?
After giving up on solving the puzzle and looking it up online have you wondered who is “HE”?
It’s Gargauth, the Hidden Lord.
In “Descent into Avernus” module the party may encounter an NPC who is a member of the Knights; she is kept by Vanathampur family as a leverage in case it transpires that Vanathampurs stole the Shield of the Hidden Lord from the Hhune crypt [1] – the very same mausoleum present in game. And it just so happens that the key to this very mausoleum is in the Elfsong Tavern’s Knights of the Shield headquarters, where Stelmane and the Emperor had their rooms.
That’s not all. When you solve the Hhune mausoleum puzzle, a secret wall will open, revealing a small room full of the Knights’ symbols. If the Shield hasn’t been stolen, the Hidden Lord would be revealed too, just like the note says.
And what is that on the table? It’s Stelmane’s journal I was referring to earlier.
Stelmane had access to the Shield. And if she did, the Emperor had too.
(Kudos, if you already know where I’m going with this.) Here’s my proposed order of events.
Stelmane and the Emperor meet. At the time she isn’t yet a Duke nor the leader of the Knights. Like any normal person she’s terrified at first, but unlike any normal person she’s willing to collaborate for the sake of the Knights and her own ambition.
Due to having an illithid ally she quickly climbs ranks of the Knights. She grows to trust him and vice-versa. Things are as good as they can be for a determined politician working her way up in a corrupt organization and a renegade illithid helping with this task.
They finally advance to the seats of power. Stelmane becomes a Duke and leader of the Knights of the Shield. Perhaps thanks to this position or due to Emperor prying into minds of the members, they become aware of the Shield of the Hidden Lord kept in Hhune mausoleum.
They begin speaking with the Shield. Neither of them knows the true identity of the entity within it and the Hidden Lord does everything to keep it that way. His information and advice is always good, so turning to it for guidance becomes a habit.
Gargauth being Gargauth makes every effort to corrupt them; it’s not particularly hard. Keep in mind they’re not good people to begin with. She’s someone willing to collaborate with a mind flayer for the sake of taking over an evil organization and he’s one DC 20 persuasion check away from enslaving the city. The devil causes their worst traits to flare up and pitties them against each other.
This results in a power struggle which culminates in the Emperor dominating Stelmane and causing her seizure.
The Shield gets stolen and soon after taken away from the city.
Without Gargauth’s direct influence they (especially the Emperor) realize the fuckup, but the damage has been done.
They recognize the fiend’s influence in this transgression. Emperor starts treating Stelmane, maybe they try to make their relationship how it once was, though it might not be possible.
Emperor gets taken by Gortash and soon after is sent on the Astral Prism heist. Events of Baldur’s Gate 3 happen.
That’s all! Have a meme!
Here’s an extra bit for the interested.
The see-through people gaze is most likely caused by Gargauth’s influence. And before that Wyll says:
Sounds familiar? And from one letter in the game we can learn that Stelmane has a mansion in the Upper City, where the patriar families such as Hhunes reside[2]. Could she be related to Thione-Hhune?
Huge thanks for reading it all! What do you think? Did Larian originally plan to have this side-story of an aftermath of Gargauth’s corruption?

genetics question for you: moonpaw is super inbred (both of her parents relate back to cinderheartxlionblaze and more generally Jake and thunderclan robinwing), so I was kind of wondering how that could/would affect her in terms of genetics and genetic mutations?
I think there is a somewhat common misconception that inbreeding causes mutation, but this isn't the case at all! The two main concerns with inbreeding are detrimental recessive traits and decreased immune function.
The first part is simple - most random mutations that occur either have no notable effect, or are detrimental in some way. However, in many cases those detrimental mutations are recessive, so when they first occur they don't really matter. However, if two individuals with the same recessive mutation breed, then their offspring may inherit it from both parents, and that's where the problems arise. Inbreeding vastly increases the risk of this happening - the closer the individuals, the higher the risk.
The other issue is immune function. The immune system functions partly in response to the environment, but genes for antibodies are also inherited. For the strongest immune system you want genes for as many different antibodies as possible, which means avoiding inbreeding. Lowered fertility, smaller litter sizes, and stunted growth in the kittens are some of the first signs of inbreeding having a negative effect.
If you know an individual's heritage, you can run calculations to determine the coefficient of inbreeding (COI), which can help quantify the risk of these effects. For animal breeding the figure commonly cited to keep the risks minimal if you need to line-breed to fix traits is 5% but of course the lower the better. I was going to do that for Moonpaw here but it's actually taking a long time because of just how bad her family tree is so I'll do that in a reblog.
#there are also online calculators for this but i want to do it by hand#it'll be educational in a few ways

Bread Vs bred - Wriothesley
Gender neutral reader, reader wants bred but Wriothesley misinterprets it BC he strikes me as the kind of guy to not pick up on those things. Porn with a bit of plot, I'm more of a reader than a writer either this stuff to take this with a pinch of salt lol.
And yes the plot is a bit of a cracky idea I know lol
--
Wriothesley had been noticing how often you'd cuddle him from behind while he worked, not that he was complaining about it, so he felt the need to ask you about this.
"Darling, what's wrong?" Wriothesley asks, writing on the paper as you begin to try out your skills.
"Oh, nothing..." You start, kissing his neck. "I just want bred."
"Bread?" Wriothesley chuckles, looking over at the grocery list. "The list is there - please don't be shy about what you'd like."
Blinking stupidly, you process the fact he thought you said bread. Sure, it could have been picked up like that, but you thought your flirtatious actions would at least imply something else. Walking to the list, you see Wriothesley smile warmly as you add bread to the list out of shock.
Thinking back on it, you realise that despite how long you two were dating, the most you ever did with him was making out - and even then that was rare. He blames it on his work, but after his deflection you fear he isn't attracted to you and he couldn't just say no to dating you.
The next day, he notes that you stopped hugging him like he was used to. You were working in another area of the Fortress, which Wriothesley got, but even in the morning you didn't initiate the affection.
At lunch, he pulls you in for a hug which you accept, only to pull away when you feel him leaning in to kiss you. You hated the idea of forcing your boyfriend to give you affection, and now you were worried he felt the need to hug you because of all the times you initiated.
-
You go to the surface together - you with the list for grocery shopping and him to visit Monsieur Neuvillette - and he finally realises what you meant by wanting bread.
He asks Neuvillette about bread, leading to some initial confusion, only for Neuvillette to understand exactly what may have happened in the context of the relationship.
"What was your partner doing when you were hearing the comment?" Neuvillette asks, clearing his throat.
"They were hugging me from behind...now that you mention it they were kissing my neck...I still don't get what bread has to do with this." Wriothesley thinks out loud, Neuvillette struggling to keep a straight face.
He pulls out a piece of paper, Wriothesley tilting his head before focusing his eyes on the paper. Wriothesley blushes furiously upon reading the word 'bred', and this being underlined and pointed at by Neuvillette.
"I'm concerned if you don't clear up any misconceptions that may arise from you rejecting the *ahem* request for baked goods, they may wish to leave the relationship."
"Thank you for the advice."
Wriothesley runs out, Neuvillette shaking his head in disbelief that this was Wriothesleys pressing matter.
-
Upon returning to the fortress, you can't seem to find Wriothesley anywhere. You made sure to get a freshly baked loaf, hoping that you wouldn't have to devour an entire loaf by yourself to continue the impression that you really really like bread.
"Honey, could you come here for a moment? Lock the door behind you." Wriothesley calls from his office.
Doing so, you place the load of bread you got into the table, before beginning to unpack the rest of the goods. You hear him grab the loaf and place it on a chair, making you stop your movements and making you look at him.
"On the desk." Wriothesley demands, you placing the bag on the table. You didn't think he wanted you, so when he shoved the bdg aside, safe to say you're worried he's about to tell you he wants to end the relationship. He grabs your hand, coaxing you to the desk before leaning into your neck.
"I said I want you on the desk." He sings teasingly into your ear. "It's about time I gave you what you wanted." He smirks, leaning in to kiss you before beginning to throw your clothes off, various garments scattered around the office.
"You poor thing, wanting to be bred by me." Your boyfriend licks his lips, lube in one hand as he begins to prepare his length for you. "You think you can take all of this, huh? Let's see."
Lining himself up to your hole, he fails to maintain his bad boy persona as he whines out as he finally gets his tip in. Oh, you feel absolutely heavenly around his girth. And this was just the tip? Forget how you would take this, how was he going to fuck you without finishing too quick?
"Good hole, sucking me in nice and tight." Wriothesley laughs lightly, slowly pressing more and more of his length in. "Fuck, you feel amazing. Does this feel good?"
You nod, pulling him in to begin a makeout as your legs wrap around his torso. Feeling one hand support himself, you feel the other snake towards your lower half as he begins to play with you. You can tell he's not experienced, but he more than makes up for it as he keeps pumping inside of you while trying to make you feel just as good - or even better - than he is feeling.
He finally gets his whole length inside of you, and the moment you feel his balls tap your backside you break the kiss as you whine at the fullness of him. He lets out a whimper, along with a string of curses as he stops himself from thrusting violently into you like he knew he would once you give him the okay.
"Please, move." You encourage, him nodding as he begins to move his hips. Unable to choose both stroking your nether regions as well as pounding your insides with power, he goes to place both of his hands around your waist as he makes your hips meet him every thrust.
"Touch yourself, my breedable bitch." He growls, the slapping sound from his thrusts accentuating just how good he was about to ruin your insides. Your hands go flying down, but you can't find enough leverage on the table to support your neck as your boyfriend uses you as he pleases. You place your hands around your boyfriends shoulders, crescent marks impending into his skin as he builds up both of your releases.
"Be a good slut and look at me as I cum inside you, yeah?" Your boyfriend whispers, barely loud enough for you to hear. "Thats it, you can barely focus. Those beautiful eyes, they can't even -."
He cuts himself off as he lets out a gutteral moan, hips stopping as he holds you on his cock as he spills his load. Being filled by your boyfriend felt absolutely euphoric, and his satisfied sigh as he collapsed on top of you, smothering your neck in kisses as he praises you for taking him so well.
--
After that fateful day, you both found yourself exploring more about each others likes and dislikes, which was a good thing for your sexual relationship.
The only thing was the poor prisoners that had heard glimpses of your lovemaking.

hi! could you talk about shadow work? do you have any resources or tips you are willing to share? 💙
hey <3. to my current understanding, shadow work and light work are just terms used to express a process of integrating the opposing sides of a persons self and life experiences. i personally think they are one and the same because the line between them is so blurred. if something 'negative' is being addressed people usually call it shadow work, but imo thats a mistake because ones shadow is just what is concealed from a persons immediate consciousness (thus it resides in their subconscious and is usually suppressed. when it does reveal itself it either erupts or emerges in covert, ugly or undesirable ways). that said, a persons most noble traits also reside in their shadow. someone shy may be concealing aspects of themselves that are bold, outspoken, even rambunctious. usually they conceal it cause of social expectation, social conditioning, or because of some past experience where their shadow trait led them to have a negative experience. similarly, someone loud and comedic may actually have an unassuming, reserved, introverted quality that they keep hidden because people seem to prefer their extraverted louder than life personality and now, in a bid to be loved and experience the affection of others, they act up to their loudness to get their need for attention or affection met.
those are both made up examples. but they serve to detail first the nature of the shadow, and then how to work on it. the cheapest and easiest way to identify your shadow is to sit still with yourself and see what thoughts and emotions or memories arise. the ones that bother you, point you directly to what you need to address. then part two is excavating your own personal truth about the experience, and either getting to the root of why it came to be, or why you perceive yourself and or the trait as you do.usually its hard because you have to face a fear, and a false misconception youve held as truth. humans can be egotistical and like to believe theyre right. its hard to challenge our beliefs, and our conditioning because we may have to face our flaws, hypocrisies, that rhe thing we thought was inherently negative is actually a strength or a positive, and all the mistakes weve made as a consequence of seeing things incorrectly. we also have to break down our social or self imposed conditioning tied to our beliefs which can cause us to question people or circumstances were attached to. even habits were attached to. think emotional eating, relationships to money, to work, to drug use or recreational activities previously associated to fun, our relationships and their dynamics, even how we treat and perceive ourselves. as the shadow work changes you, it changes your life and who you show up as, which is the hard part. its easy to acknowledge your secret self in private but allowing the fruit of your discovery to emerge publicly takes inner power. — ive listed so many resources over the years. what comes to mind is robert a johnson (he has loads of books even one directly on the shadow) and teal swans videos on youtube. hope this helped. sending love <3

A letter from Clara Kent to Louis Lane, 1947
Art by Mary † (@rolarym_) • Instagram photos and videos
(...) September [crossed out] October 1947
My dearest Louis, It's nearing two years since...I've penned countless letters you've yet to discover...since I embraced what I believe to be my duty. I'm writing now, unsure if these words will ever find you, compelled by a need to sort through my thoughts. It's a quest for self-understanding, hoping that, in time, you might grasp the essence of me. There are moments when I scarcely recognize the woman in photographs, or the heroic murals painted in the streets. At times, a profound melancholy engulfs me, alongside a yearning to simply be Clara Kent. Yet, I am acutely aware of the sacrifices my duty entails, uncertain of when I may fulfill it. To ignore the talents bestowed upon me by God, or to withhold the aid I can offer to others, would be unjust. By the love I bear for you and my parents, I do not consider myself superior to anyone. However, I am convinced that my abilities can be of service. Just that. There was a period when I viewed these powers as a curse, but it would be dishonest to claim I don't revel in the role of Superwoman, despite my aversion to the moniker they've assigned to me.
I cherish the opportunity to aid others, the thrill of flight, and even the power of super-strength. Yet, there are moments when I find it burdensome. Sometimes, I feel like a child harboring a delightful secret that must remain hidden, and I find myself blushing whenever the topic of Superwoman arises in conversations. There are times when pain seeps in as I listen to you on the radio or read your words in the newspaper, painting me as a non-human entity, unpredictable and unworthy of trust. Your perspective is not lost on me; I might share the same view if our roles were reversed. Indeed, there was a time when I viewed myself through a similar lens. However, it's unfair for you to see me that way. Every day, you're sitting right in front of me. I'm honest with you about everything, presenting myself exactly as I am, with two exceptions: my role as Superwoman and my deep love for you. I fear the misconception that I might be someone I'm not. Finding the right moment to reveal the truth seems impossible, and sometimes, I wonder if it's better left unsaid. It's a challenging balance. I manage merely an hour of sleep daily, Louis, and spend much of my time soaring back and forth across the sky. It's a kind of madness, perhaps a beautiful one. I don't want to give it up, yet part of me wishes for a life without such burdens. This contradiction is mine to bear, hoping someday you'll grasp it. And maybe, one day, you'll open up to me too. We women sense these things, perhaps I even more so. I notice your glances, the way your smile lingers after our disagreements. Your inventive excuses just to spend an afternoon together or share a meal. I see through you. I understand the complexities of your marriage, your values, and your daughter. Your marriage exists in name only, a fact we're both aware of, just as your wife lives her life independently.
Occasionally, it seems there isn't much of a way out of your dilemma, just as there isn't much of a way out of mine, despite the vast differences between them. And I appreciate that you are honest in your own way. Other men wouldn't have a problem with a double life, they would take me as a lover without hesitating. While I could come to terms with that, I find joy and an even greater love for you in your decision not to pursue such a path, adhering instead to a set of morals that I might not fully subscribe to, especially when so many others vocally committed to these ideals fall short in their daily lives. I'm clinging to the hope for a miracle, a miracle of understanding between us. Perhaps such a miracle is elusive, and we're destined to remain forever intertwined as dear friends and confidants, which seems a bitter twist of fate. Maybe my thoughts are naïve. The world teeters on the edge of destruction, with looming threats of war, dangers from Luthor and others, and the recent brush with obliteration at the hands of Zod just eighteen months prior. When I reflect on the global turmoil and my own responsibilities, our adventures, yours and mine, chaste adventures confined to the spaces between office desks and a restaurant's corner, feel all too fleeting, and it strikes me as profoundly unjust. How can I expect you to understand me when I'm still grappling with my own identity? Yet, you grasp the concept of duty to others, of our purpose here to "love thy neighbor as thyself." Perhaps that shared comprehension is the foundation upon which you might come to understand the purpose behind my choice to don the red cape.

One of the most irritating stereotypes that surround astrology for me is the belief that Saturn is a “bad” planet.
Astrology is meant to be a tool of self-reflection, it teaches us things about ourselves that we can’t recognize easily. I am a firm believer that difficult situations teach us the most about ourselves and can really help us align with our purpose in life. Saturn, notoriously known as the “bad” planet, is the key to this.
SATURN DELAYS BUT NEVER DENIES.
For those of you who are just getting started with astrology you should know that Saturn does not “doom” the area of your life where it sits natally, but it calls for you to take action and work hard to confront the issues that may arise in that area.
What most people don’t know is that Saturn never lets hard work go unrecognized. In fact, if you put in the work, Saturn gives wonderful gifts.
For example, last Saturday I had the pleasure of reading the charts of one of my clients who had Saturn in her 2nd house.
She grew up in a third world country in an extremely poor family. In her early years, her family dealt with poverty, homelessness thus creating a lot of issue around her self-worth and confidence. Luckily, she stayed strong through out it and worked her ass off despite the circumstances she was given.
At the present moment, she is now a million dollar real estate agent who sells luxury homes all over the world. Funnily enough, she told me after her Saturn Return (age 27-28) is when she really started to gain more confidence in her money making abilities and her own gifts.
This placement also indicate people who tend to make wealth during the second half of their life which definitely holds true. Her true wealth status wasn’t really fermented until she entered her mid-40’s.
The most common misconception about Saturn is that this is the area of life where you will experience the most misfortune when in reality, it is the area of life where a little more work has to be put in.
As a late degree pisces rising, I am currently going through my Saturn in the 12th transit untill 2026. It has been wild to say the least, but it has also inspired me to get more serious about my mental health and confront the shadow sides of myself that I have been repressing all these years (I have 5 Aquarius placements in my big six so naturally I am not the emotional type).
For those of you who feel anxious about Saturn placements/transits know that the best thing that you can do is work through it and not run from it.
Where does your Saturn sit in your chart?
Have you been putting in the work?
DO NOT FEAR SATURN AND LEARN TO WORK WITH IT!

How Often Should You Seal Your Driveway? Debunking the Myths
When discussing how often to seal driveways, many myths circulate among homeowners. Let’s break down some common misconceptions.
Myth 1: You Need to Seal Your Driveway Every Year
It’s a common belief that driveways need yearly sealing. However, this isn’t necessarily true for every surface type.
Fact Check:
While some asphalt surfaces may require annual sealcoating due to heavy traffic or extreme weather conditions, most driveways only need sealing every 2 to 3 years. Concrete surfaces typically last longer without needing a sealant.

Myth 2: All Sealants are Created Equal
Another misconception is that all sealing products perform the same way.
Fact Check:
There are various types of sealants available—some designed specifically for asphalt while others work better on concrete or pavers. Always consult with a paving contractor to determine which product best suits your driveway type.
Myth 3: Sealing Will Fix Existing Damage
Many homeowners believe that sealing their driveway will fix cracks or damages already present.
Fact Check:
Sealing does not repair existing damage; it merely protects the surface from further deterioration. If you have cracks or potholes, consider paver repair or asphalt patching before applying any sealant.

Arthur Machen's Idea of Evil
If you’ll indulge me, I’d like to explain one of my favorite ideas in fiction: the idea of positive evil.
The Christian conception of evil is, more often than not, one of negation. Evil is a lack of goodness, a turning away from God. Adam and Eve were born sinless, but acted against God’s will, and so fell from innocence and grace. Thence came Original Sin, an imperfection that was inherited by all humankind. A defect, a blemish—an alteration of what would have been their natural state.
For many people, this is the familiar way of viewing sin and evil, even if they aren’t familiar with all the strange theological offshoots that came from following it to its logical conclusions.
I’m not going to discuss those here, though they’re certainly worth investigating. Rather, I want to talk about how the late Victorian author Arthur Machen, regarded by many as the “grandfather of weird fiction,” created horror and mystery by rejecting this doctrine, and entertaining the possibility of evil with positive substance unto itself.
Picture very much related.
What separates crime from sin, vice from evil, animal fear from existential terror? Much of Machen’s horror fiction follows this line of inquiry in one way or another, but he answers it pretty directly in the prologue of The White People. It’s structured as a short Socratic dialogue between the author stand-in Ambrose and his evening visitor, Mr. Cotgrave:
‘I think you are falling into the very general error of confining the spiritual world to the supremely good; but the supremely wicked, necessarily, have their portion in it. The merely carnal, sensual man can no more be a great sinner than he can be a great saint. Most of us are just indifferent, mixed-up creatures; we muddle through the world without realizing the meaning and the inner sense of things, and, consequently, our wickedness and our goodness are alike second-rate, unimportant.'
'And you think the great sinner, then, will be an ascetic, as well as the great saint?'
'Great people of all kinds forsake the imperfect copies and go to the perfect originals. I have no doubt but that many of the very highest among the saints have never done a "good action" (using the words in their ordinary sense). And, on the other hand, there have been those who have sounded the very depths of sin, who all their lives have never done an "ill deed."'
[...]
'I can't stand it, you know,' he said, 'your paradoxes are too monstrous. A man may be a great sinner and yet never do anything sinful! Come!'
'You're quite wrong,' said Ambrose. 'I never make paradoxes; I wish I could. [...] Oh, yes, there is a sort of connexion between Sin with the capital letter, and actions which are commonly called sinful: with murder, theft, adultery, and so forth. Much the same connexion that there is between the A, B, C and fine literature. But I believe that the misconception—it is all but universal—arises in great measure from our looking at the matter through social spectacles. We think that a man who does evil to us and to his neighbours must be very evil. So he is, from a social standpoint; but can't you realize that Evil in its essence is a lonely thing, a passion of the solitary, individual soul? Really, the average murderer, quâ murderer, is not by any means a sinner in the true sense of the word. He is simply a wild beast that we have to get rid of to save our own necks from his knife. I should class him rather with tigers than with sinners.'
'It seems a little strange.'
'I think not. The murderer murders not from positive qualities, but from negative ones; he lacks something which non-murderers possess. Evil, of course, is wholly positive—only it is on the wrong side. You may believe me that sin in its proper sense is very rare; it is probable that there have been far fewer sinners than saints. Yes, your standpoint is all very well for practical, social purposes; we are naturally inclined to think that a person who is very disagreeable to us must be a very great sinner! It is very disagreeable to have one's pocket picked, and we pronounce the thief to be a very great sinner. In truth, he is merely an undeveloped man. He cannot be a saint, of course; but he may be, and often is, an infinitely better creature than thousands who have never broken a single commandment. He is a great nuisance to us, I admit, and we very properly lock him up if we catch him; but between his troublesome and unsocial action and evil—Oh, the connexion is of the weakest.'
It was getting very late. The man who had brought Cotgrave had probably heard all this before, since he assisted with a bland and judicious smile, but Cotgrave began to think that his 'lunatic' was turning into a sage.
'Do you know,' he said, 'you interest me immensely? You think, then, that we do not understand the real nature of evil?'
'No, I don't think we do. We over-estimate it and we under-estimate it. We take the very numerous infractions of our social "bye-laws"—the very necessary and very proper regulations which keep the human company together—and we get frightened at the prevalence of "sin" and "evil." But this is really nonsense. Take theft, for example. Have you any horror at the thought of Robin Hood, of the Highland caterans of the seventeenth century, of the moss-troopers, of the company promoters of our day?
'Then, on the other hand, we underrate evil. We attach such an enormous importance to the "sin" of meddling with our pockets (and our wives) that we have quite forgotten the awfulness of real sin.'
'And what is sin?' said Cotgrave.
'I think I must reply to your question by another. What would your feelings be, seriously, if your cat or your dog began to talk to you, and to dispute with you in human accents? You would be overwhelmed with horror. I am sure of it. And if the roses in your garden sang a weird song, you would go mad. And suppose the stones in the road began to swell and grow before your eyes, and if the pebble that you noticed at night had shot out stony blossoms in the morning?
'Well, these examples may give you some notion of what sin really is.'
[...]
'You astonish me,' said Cotgrave. 'I had never thought of that. If that is really so, one must turn everything upside down. Then the essence of sin really is——'
'In the taking of heaven by storm, it seems to me,' said Ambrose. 'It appears to me that it is simply an attempt to penetrate into another and higher sphere in a forbidden manner. You can understand why it is so rare. There are few, indeed, who wish to penetrate into other spheres, higher or lower, in ways allowed or forbidden. Men, in the mass, are amply content with life as they find it. Therefore there are few saints, and sinners (in the proper sense) are fewer still, and men of genius, who partake sometimes of each character, are rare also. Yes; on the whole, it is, perhaps, harder to be a great sinner than a great saint.'
'There is something profoundly unnatural about Sin? Is that what you mean?'
'Exactly. Holiness requires as great, or almost as great, an effort; but holiness works on lines that were natural once; it is an effort to recover the ecstasy that was before the Fall. But sin is an effort to gain the ecstasy and the knowledge that pertain alone to angels and in making this effort man becomes a demon. I told you that the mere murderer is not therefore a sinner; that is true, but the sinner is sometimes a murderer. Gilles de Raiz is an instance. So you see that while the good and the evil are unnatural to man as he now is—to man the social, civilized being—evil is unnatural in a much deeper sense than good. The saint endeavours to recover a gift which he has lost; the sinner tries to obtain something which was never his. In brief, he repeats the Fall.'
Emphasis added by me.
Sin, in Machen’s eyes, is a violation of the most fundamental laws of our universe—the principles that determines what is good, what is natural, what is up and what is down. In Platonic terms, it is a violation of the reality that proceeds from ‘God,’ the One, the Good.
To break these laws is not merely to turn away from God, but to turn towards something else. Some entity or principle that is wholly foreign to the Good, and is intruding upon our reality, imprinting itself upon matter and spirit alike.
The sinner turns towards this Evil, just as the saint turns towards the Good, because it induces the same spiritual ecstasy, just in the opposite direction.
You are making contact with a great spiritual Truth, be it supernal or infernal or simply weird, and the very essence of your being is undergoing a process of sublimation in accordance with that principle.
It’s a terrifying idea because it empowers evil in a way that Christian doctrine simply does not allow, and it acknowledges that depravity is, on some level, empowering. It’s not just that we want to get away with breaking the rules. It’s not that we want to follow our appetites without regard for the harm that it may cause. No, sometimes human beings want to commit real violence, spiritual or physical, simply for its own sake—just like we do good things for the sake of goodness.
Attributing that impulse to the influence of a transcendent law or entity, of the same kind as the One, presents an existentially perilous universe. Suddenly we are beset from all sides by forces from outside our reality, as infinite as there are directions, all of which threaten to change the essence of who and what we are. Acknowledging these intrusive powers could mean succumbing to them, and becoming something as foreign to humanity as blossoming cobblestones are to the laws of physics.
Someone beside you, to all appearances human, could be wearing that form only externally, and temporarily. They could in fact belong to something that should not exist in our world at all. And if given the chance, they would discard their human face and show you something that should not be manifested in matter at all.
Chilling, isn’t it?
I was going to talk about this idea in fiction besides Machen’s—I actually see some echoes of it in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, of all things—but this is already a fairly long post. I’ll save it for another time.
To those who bothered to read this far, what are your favorite examples of ‘positive evil’ in fiction?

The High Rate Of Diabetes In Congo
In recent years, diabetes has become a growing public health concern in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a country traditionally known for infectious diseases like malaria. While attention has primarily focused on combating communicable diseases, the surge in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes is an issue that can no longer be ignored. This blog delves into the reasons behind the rising rate of diabetes in Congo, shedding light on the factors contributing to this growing health crisis.
1. Urbanization and Lifestyle Changes
One of the primary contributors to the increasing rate of diabetes in Congo is the rapid urbanization occurring across the country. As people migrate to cities for better job opportunities, they adopt more sedentary lifestyles. Physical activity levels decrease as jobs become less labor-intensive, and there is increased reliance on modern transportation.
Alongside this, urban living brings greater access to processed foods, which are high in sugar and unhealthy fats. These dietary shifts, coupled with reduced physical activity, significantly increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Traditional diets rich in fiber and low in fat have been replaced by fast foods, sugary beverages, and snacks, creating a perfect storm for the rise of diabetes.
2. Poverty and Limited Access to Healthcare
Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world, and poverty plays a crucial role in the increasing rate of diabetes. With limited financial resources, many people cannot afford regular medical checkups or treatments for chronic conditions. As a result, diabetes often goes undiagnosed and untreated until complications arise.
The healthcare system in Congo is also underdeveloped, with limited access to healthcare professionals, medications, and diagnostic tools. This makes it difficult for individuals with diabetes to manage their condition effectively, leading to poor outcomes and a higher prevalence of complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, and amputations.
3. Lack of Awareness and Education
A lack of public awareness and education about diabetes is another factor contributing to the rise of the disease in Congo. Many people are unaware of the signs and symptoms of diabetes, which leads to delayed diagnosis. Additionally, misconceptions about the disease are prevalent, and some people may attribute its symptoms to other health conditions or even spiritual causes.
Without adequate education, people are less likely to adopt healthy lifestyle changes, such as improving their diet or increasing physical activity, both of which are critical in preventing and managing diabetes.
4. Genetic Predisposition
Genetics also plays a role in the increasing prevalence of diabetes in Congo. Some populations may be more genetically predisposed to developing the disease, especially if combined with environmental factors like poor diet and lack of exercise. Studies show that individuals of African descent are at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared to other ethnic groups.
5. Post-Conflict Stress and Trauma
The DRC has been plagued by decades of conflict and political instability, which has left many people traumatized and displaced. Chronic stress and trauma can lead to elevated blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of developing diabetes over time. The stress of daily survival, poor living conditions in refugee camps, and the lingering effects of war all contribute to the rise of diabetes in the country.
6. Inadequate Policy Responses and Health Infrastructure
While Congo has made strides in addressing communicable diseases, efforts to combat non-communicable diseases like diabetes have lagged behind. The country lacks comprehensive national policies for diabetes prevention and control. Public health campaigns targeting diabetes awareness are minimal, and there is a shortage of trained healthcare providers to diagnose and treat the disease.
Without a strong healthcare infrastructure in place, individuals with diabetes are left to fend for themselves, often turning to traditional healers or home remedies that may not be effective in managing the condition.
7. Consequences of the Diabetes Epidemic
The rising tide of diabetes in Congo has far-reaching consequences. As more people develop diabetes, the burden on the healthcare system intensifies, further straining already limited resources. The economic impact is also significant, as individuals with diabetes often miss work due to illness, reducing productivity and income.
Moreover, diabetes-related complications, such as blindness, amputations, and kidney disease, place additional stress on families and communities, making it difficult to break the cycle of poverty and poor health.
Conclusion: Addressing the Growing Diabetes Crisis in Congo
The rise of diabetes in Congo is a complex issue driven by multiple factors, including urbanization, poverty, lack of awareness, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. To combat this growing epidemic, Congo must invest in education and awareness campaigns that emphasize the importance of healthy eating and regular physical activity. Additionally, improving access to healthcare services and ensuring early diagnosis and treatment are crucial steps in reducing the burden of diabetes on the population.
Addressing the diabetes crisis in Congo requires a multi-faceted approach, combining public health interventions, policy changes, and community engagement. With the right resources and strategies, it is possible to slow the spread of diabetes and improve the quality of life for those affected by the disease.

17 Pregnancy Do’s and Don’ts That May Surprise You
There can be misconceptions about what is ok to do during pregnancy. It’s commonly known to try to eat healthy while avoiding certain foods, exercise, and take your prenatal multivitamins, but other things may surprise you.
Before your little bundle of joy arrives, you’re responsible for helping them grow in a nurturing, healthy environment.
This list of pregnancy do’s, and don’ts can illuminate what you should worry about — and what you shouldn’t fret over.
>> Get a FREE EBOOK on Pregnancy Tips and Daily Guide <<
Pregnancy Do’s
1. Do take a multivitamin
Eating a balanced diet that’s rich in vitamins and minerals is the best way to provide your body with all of the healthy nutrients it needs to support a growing baby. A healthy diet alone, however, may not be enough for pregnancy.
Prenatal vitamins contain higher levels of certain nutrients that expectant mothers require at higher doses, such as:
folic acid
calcium
iron
These vitamins assist with proper development of the fetus and help prevent birth defects. Your doctor can help you find a multivitamin or a series of vitamins that are best for you.
A multivitamin will usually include DHA, EPA, or both. These are omega-3 fats that are important for your baby’s proper brain development.
Don’t take more than one dose of multivitamins, though. Some vitamins in higher amounts can be harmful to the baby.
2. Do get lots of sleep
Changing hormone levels, anticipation, and anxiety can make sleep elusive during your 9 months of pregnancy. Pregnancy is demanding, especially in the final trimester, and you’ll need your sleep.
Take a quick snooze if you feel tired and schedule naps whenever you can. Set bedtimes and stick to them.
Aim for 7-9 hours of shut-eye each night. Fatigue is a sign that your body needs more rest, so give yourself all the sleep you can.
3. Do work out
Gone are the days of pregnant women avoiding lifting a finger during their pregnancies: We now know that exercise is good for mama and baby.
In fact, regular exercise may help you combat many of the issues that arise during pregnancy, including:
insomnia
muscle pain
excessive weight gain
mood problems
If you regularly exercised before you became pregnant, keep it up. Talk with your doctor about any adjustments you should make to your routine, especially as you move into your second and third trimesters.
If you didn’t exercise regularly before you found out you were expecting, ask your doctor about incorporating a fitness routine into your day. They can guide you into a program that’s safe and comfortable for you and your growing baby.
4. Do eat seafood
Seafood is loaded with vitamins and minerals, such as heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and iron. These are all important for both mom and baby. But undercooked or raw seafood can cause some problems.
Seafood may carry harmful bacteria and viruses, which are eliminated when thoroughly cooked. Also, pregnant women should avoid raw fish and fish that may contain high levels of mercury.
Examples of fish containing high levels of mercury include:
shark
swordfish
tilefish
king mackerel
Eat a variety of seafood so you don’t have a concentration of minerals from one type of fish. Eat no more than 12 ounces of fish per week.
5. Do have sex 😉
Sex during pregnancy is fine, as long as you don’t have a complicating factor such as placenta previa or another type of high-risk pregnancy.
Sex is safe with your partner right up until your water breaks. If you have discomfort you may have to try new positions. Talk with your doctor if you have any questions about the safety of intercourse during your pregnancy.
6. Do practice yoga
You should avoid Bikram or hot yoga, but other yoga modalities are fine when you’re expecting. Seek out prenatal or gentle yoga classes that are designed for mothers-to-be. Instructors in these classes will know which poses are best and which you should avoid.
If you weren’t doing yoga before you became pregnant, talk with your doctor before signing up for a class. While it’s possible you can start, it’s best to go over the risks and concerns with your doctor.
7. Do get a flu shot
Pregnant women can and should get a flu vaccine as long as you don’t have a contraindication as noted by the manufacturer.
The injection isn’t a live virus. You cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine. If you were to contract influenza during your pregnancy, the risk of severe side effects is greater than in women of the same age who aren’t pregnant.
The vaccine will protect you as well as your developing fetus.
8. Do gain weight smartly
The “eat for two” advice to expecting mothers isn’t a license to eat whatever you’d like. Instead, women need to be strategic about what they eat and how much.
Gaining a lot of weight during pregnancy may do more harm to your baby than good. During your first trimester, you only need about 100 extra calories a day to support your growing fetus.
By your third trimester, that additional calorie number is closer to 300 to 500 per day.
9. Do visit your dentist
Trips to the dentist’s office were avoided for decades for fear that an oral cleaning might cause bacteria to spread and lead to an infection. Now we know that’s just not the case.
In fact, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that expectant mothers have a routine oral health assessment while pregnant, along with regular dental cleanings. Be sure to tell your dentist that you’re pregnant.
Healthline and our partners may receive a portion of revenues if you make a purchase using a link above.
Pregnancy Don’ts
10. Don’t smoke
Babies born to women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have a lower birth weight and are at a greater risk for learning disabilities than children born to nonsmoking mothers.
Additionally, children born to women who smoke are more likely to try smoking at a younger age and become regular smokers earlier, due to physiologic nicotine addiction.
11. Don’t drink alcohol
Alcohol may greatly impact your baby’s development. People who drink alcohol while pregnant could deliver a baby with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
Symptoms of FAS include:
low birth weight
learning disabilities
behavior problems
lagging patterns in terms of growth and development milestones
Even small amounts of alcohol can be a problem. There appears to be no safe level of alcohol intake in pregnancy.
If you need help stopping drinking while you’re pregnant, talk with your doctor as soon as possible. The sooner you get help, the healthier your baby is likely to be.
12. Don’t eat raw meat
Raw and undercooked meat and eggs carry the risk of foodborne illness, such as listeriosis and toxoplasmosis. Food poisoning is also a possibility.
These conditions can cause serious, life-threatening illnesses that could lead to severe birth defects and even miscarriage. Make sure all eggs and meat that you eat while pregnant are well-cooked.
13. Don’t eat deli meat
Deli meats — including hot dogs, sausages, smoked salmon, and other cured meats — can cause foodborne illness, such as listeriosis and toxoplasmosis.
Meats that are sliced have far more surface area for bacterial growth. Thoroughly cooking these processed proteins well reduces your risk.
It’s also important to eat pasteurized (not raw) milk and cheese. Always wash produce to help eliminate harmful bacteria.
14. Don’t eat unpasteurized milk products
Calcium is very important for growing babies, but moms have to be careful how they get their calcium from dairy.
Raw milk isn’t recommended for expecting mothers since it’s unpasteurized. This means it hasn’t been heated to kill bacteria that could make you ill.
Specifically, raw milk may contain the bacteria Listeria. It can lead to illness, miscarriage, or even life-threatening consequences.
15. Don’t sit in a hot tub or sauna
Though relaxing, the high-heat environment of hot tubs, Jacuzzis, and saunas may be too dangerous for expecting mothers.
In fact, research suggests that using one of these during your first trimester may double your risk of miscarriage. Soaking in hot water can raise body temperature and this causes problems with the baby including increasing the risk of birth defects.
16. Don’t drink a lot of caffeine
Caffeine can travel through the placenta and increase your baby’s heart rate.
Current research suggests that women can safely consume a cup or two of coffee each day, but forego downing a triple-shot latte while you’re carrying.
17. Don’t clean the cat’s litter box
Pet your furry friend all you like and wash your hands afterward — but don’t clean a cat’s litter box.
Feline waste is filled with millions of bacteria and parasites. One in particular, Toxoplasma gondii, is particularly dangerous to expecting mothers.
If you contract it, you may never know until you begin having complications with your pregnancy. A miscarriage or stillbirth is possible. Babies who contract this parasite may face serious health problems, including seizures and mental disabilities.

PROTECT YOUR FILES AND RECOVER FROM LAPTOP VIRUSES: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SAFEGUARDING YOUR DATA
When your laptop is infected with a virus, there is a misconception that the only solution is to wipe or format the PC, resulting in the loss of files and programs. However, there is an alternative method that can help you keep your files intact.
First, check if your laptop has a restore point available, which is typically created at an earlier date as a fallback option when issues arise with your PC. If you have a restore point prior to the virus infection, follow these steps to restore your laptop:
1. Access the restore point settings on your laptop.
2. Choose a restore point from the available dates (there may be multiple restore points).
3. Initiate the restoration process and allow your laptop to revert to the selected earlier date.
4. During the restoration process, you may lose files or programs that were installed after the restore point date.
5. After the restoration is complete, you might be prompted to reinstall any programs you consider safe.
Keep in mind that the virus could have been embedded in a program or file that you downloaded shortly before realizing your PC was infected. Therefore, reinstalling those programs may not be necessary after your laptop has been restored to an earlier date.
Please note that this information may not be accurate in all cases, as the effectiveness of system restore depends on various factors such as the type of virus, system settings, and the availability of restore points. It's always a good idea to have reliable antivirus software and regularly back up your important files to ensure their safety.
Below is an article that shows you a step-by-step guide to creating a restore point, restoring your laptop to an earlier date, and jara.
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-restore...
Please feel free to share this valuable information with anyone who might find it useful, either now or in the future. By doing so, you can help others protect their files and programs when faced with a virus infection. Thank you for spreading the word!

Why Pelvic Health is Important
Pelvic health is a topic that often remains shrouded in silence and misconceptions. However, understanding the significance of pelvic health is crucial for everyone, regardless of age or gender. Today, we will delve into the reasons why pelvic health is important and how it can be supported through HEP (Home Exercise Programs) Physical Therapy and physical therapy management software.
Foundation of Core Strength
The pelvic region is at the core of our body's support system. It houses a complex network of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that provide stability to our spine, pelvis, and surrounding organs. Optimal pelvic health is essential for maintaining overall core strength, which is vital for balance, posture, and preventing injuries.
Urinary and Bowel Function
A healthy pelvis is closely linked to proper urinary and bowel function. Pelvic floor muscles play a key role in controlling these bodily functions. Conditions like urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence can be effectively managed and even prevented through pelvic floor therapy exercises, often included in HEP Physical Therapy programs.
Sexual Well-being
Pelvic health has a significant impact on sexual well-being. Both men and women rely on healthy pelvic function for sexual arousal, performance, and satisfaction. Pelvic floor muscle dysfunction can lead to sexual issues that may be addressed through pelvic health interventions.
Pregnancy and Postpartum Health
For women, pelvic health is especially crucial during pregnancy and postpartum stages. A strong and well-functioning pelvic floor is essential for carrying the baby during pregnancy and aiding in a smoother delivery. After childbirth, pelvic floor rehabilitation, often guided by physical therapy management software, can help restore muscle tone and alleviate postpartum issues.
Lower Back and Hip Pain
Pelvic health is closely linked to lower back and hip health. Dysfunction in the pelvic region can lead to chronic pain and discomfort in these areas. Physical therapy programs, including HEPs, can address these issues by focusing on strengthening and stabilizing the pelvic area.
Aging Gracefully
As we age, maintaining pelvic health becomes increasingly important. Age-related changes can weaken pelvic muscles and lead to various health issues. HEP Physical Therapy programs can help individuals of all ages preserve and improve their pelvic health, promoting a higher quality of life.
Prevention and Wellness
Understanding the importance of pelvic health is not just about addressing existing issues but also about preventing future problems. Incorporating pelvic floor exercises into your regular fitness routine, guided by physical therapy management software, can help maintain optimal pelvic health and prevent problems before they arise.
In conclusion, pelvic health is a vital aspect of overall well-being that often goes unnoticed until issues arise. By recognizing its importance and actively seeking solutions through approaches like HEP Physical Therapy, individuals can take control of their pelvic health and enjoy a healthier, more fulfilling life. Remember, a strong foundation in the pelvic region is the cornerstone of a healthy and active lifestyle.

The physical record of Inazuman history is easily the worst of the nations we have so far. Almost every island has been beset by major disasters that have drastically changed their landscapes. As a consequence, the actual purposes of almost all of its truly ancient ruins have been lost. Take the massive complex at Araumi. Despite being one of the largest complexes in all of Inazuma, there is no reasonable purpose to it that can be seen today. The Sacred Sakura couldn’t have existed when the complex was built as it only sprouted 500 years ago. Meanwhile the architectural style of these ruins indicates it was once a part of the Unified civilization. Making them at least 5 times older. It also couldn’t have been for the Perpetual Motion Machine as that was likely built by Khaenri’ah. Which of course existed long after the Unified fell. If neither fit the complex, then we have no clues as to what it could possibly have been used for. With the meaning of such sizable ruins being lost, it's unsurprising that the purposes of other ruins would be lost or distorted due to time. The most noticeable of which should be Fort Mumei. Despite showing very little signs of being a militaristic site, it has still gained the moniker of “Fort”. In this analysis we are going to talk about what Fort Mumei might actually be, and what of its features may have led to the creation of this misnomer.
Why Has it Been Named a Fort?
Before we can get into why it isn’t a fort or what it actually is, we first need to address how the concept of it being a fort first could have come about. I believe there lies 2 distinct possibilities as to how. Location/geography and the ruins' current state.
Location/Geography:
The first war between Watatsumi and the Shogunate was fought over Yashiori Island. The details of the conflict are unimportant here but it ultimately culminated into a Shogunate victory after Orobashi and his generals were slain. However tensions remained high after this victory. Thus, for some time immediately afterwards, the Shogunate likely kept a large military presence upon the island. It’s possible that during this time the ruins were used to house military equipment and personnel. Due to its proximity to Watatsumi it would provide an excellent front line position should any disillusioned denizens of Watatsumi decide to try something. Additionally, the islands surrounding the ruins provide a natural protection against naval attacks by forcing ships to enter in smaller predefined locations. Making it a fantastic place to route an opponent that can only invade by sea. Even temporary bases are often named, and with the large number of personnel that would likely have been stationed upon the island the name this temporary moniker of “Fort Mumei” ended up sticking.
The Ruins Current State:
The other possible reason for this misnomer lies in the current state of the ruins themselves. The ruins at Fort Mumei are almost entirely underwater. Whether this is a result of flooding or the structure itself sinking into the sand and silt is unknown. Whatever the reason, with the majority of the structure out of sight, misconceptions are bound to arise. The average person is likely only going to be viewing these ruins from a distance. Such as the view seen below.
The people who live on Inazuma are very familiar with sea travel as it is the primary mode of transport due to its existence as a nation of islands. Seeing such a structure inside a cove is likely to prompt people into believing that the structure likely served some sort of marine duty. With the stone structures along the red lines maybe serving as anchoring points for docks. The military correlation may have come about both due to its proximity to Watatsumi Island and the presence of several Shogunate shipwrecks surrounding it. The important thing to remember is that the average person isn’t going to be giving much thought to something like this outside of trying to come up with something to call it. As a result the function of the unknown is often made to fit into something that would make sense to them, even if it’s wildly different to the truth. To the average Inazuman, these are simply some waterlogged ruins in a cove.
Why Isn’t it a Fort?
Of course the biggest question of this analysis is why isn’t this a fort, at least not originally. Unlike how its misnomer may have come about, simple observation of the ruins and the surrounding area creates several discrepancies towards the idea that these ruins were used in a militaristic function.
The Water:
If these ruins were originally used as a naval installation, then it makes total sense that it would have sunken at least a little bit over the centuries. But the issue with this complex is that that water was probably never supposed to even be touching it at all. There are several clues hinting towards this having originally been built on dry land. Such as this set of stairs on the northern side that go directly underwater.
Or the fact the circular center platform sits raised upon an ever larger circular platform.
Or this fallen wall carved far too ornately to have then been stuck underwater where it wouldn’t be seen.
Finally, both the north and south sides have walls or lines of decorated pillars that connect to ruins on the surrounding islands. Something that would make no sense to build if the area were originally covered in water.
north side
south side With the unlikely exception of some bizarre religious meaning. It makes no sense why a group of people would intentionally build such structures underwater. It would be ridiculous to expend so many resources creating such ornate structures only to hide them away where people can’t see them. And that's not even getting into how they even built them in the first place. Finally some of you might be wondering how this area could have ever not had water in it. For that we have to turn to the islands surrounding it. The best theory I could come up with is that islands surrounding the ruins were once both much larger and higher up. As a result, they created a natural barrier against the water. Which may have been further built up by the people who once lived there. However thousands of years of erosion have since destroyed most of that barrier, causing the entire area to be flooded. Evidence for this can be seen on the two northern islands. Which are actually still attached by a very shallow sandbank.Where are the Defenses?:There’s no such thing as a military installation without some kind of defensive structure. Now Fort Mumei does have one, the issue is that it’s the only one, and even then it's so far gone that it could easily have been for something else. On the northwestern island lies the remains of a stone tower. With only the base remaining, its true purpose can only be ascertained through guesswork. But what I can say is that it probably wasn’t a defensive tower. It is A. The only stone tower in the entire complex, and B. Is located away from most of the ruins, which would make it useless for anything defense related. It wouldn’t even be useful for lookout as you could just build something on Yashiori Island for that because it’s already higher than the area the ruins are in. Other than this incredibly unlikely candidate, no other defensive installations can be found anywhere within the complex.
Said tower, note how little remains making its function indecipherable So What is it?The Fort Mumei ruins are vast, comparable in size to the largest area of the Windwail Highland ruins (For more on said ruins see my Windwail Highland analysis One Two Three Four). Except unlike at Windwail Highland this is, or at least was, one continuous structure. No matter how prosperous a civilization is, such a large amount of time and resources would never be put towards something that didn’t have importance to the society as a whole. So if Fort Mumei wasn’t a military installation, then what was it? Unfortunately that’s a question we may never know the true answer to. There is no mention of Fort Mumei in contemporary texts and proper exploration of the site is prevented due to the water. That doesn’t mean we can’t make some guesses. In fact I have two of them.Ceremonial Site:The first theory I have regarding the Fort Mumei ruins is that they served a ceremonial and/or religious purpose. This conclusion comes mostly from the layout and location of the main body of ruins. For starters the ruins of Fort Mumei are both simple yet complex at the same time. Consisting of a single central pathway that leads to a large circular space. Such an open space would be a perfect site to perform ceremonies to large groups of people with relative ease. The pathway continues from the platform, heads up some stairs, and stops in front of a raised platform complete with a massive and ornately decorated arch. The arch itself is of important note. Being highly decorated and the only one of its kind within the complex, this archway was likely pretty important. Maybe even the most important part of the structure. This is further reinforced by the fact the central path doesn’t actually go to the platform the arch stands upon.Something to remember is that this complex was probably built about six thousand years ago (being that it’s likely from the unified civilization). Watatsumi Island rose from the ocean only two thousand years ago. Meaning at the time of its construction this was the furthest west you could travel in all of Inazuma. In the likely very culturally diverse place that was ancient Inazuma, it wouldn’t be too odd for there to be some people who saw this as important.
The pathway does not go up to the platform with the arch, instead stopping just before it. There is no proper staircase leading up to this platform as the stones lying atop the path appear to have fallen there as the ruins deteriorated. Before we go into the other theory, let's take a quick dive into a crack-esq theory that popped into my head. I think it’s possible this archway may have been used in ceremonies as a sort of gateway to another world. Because beyond that archway, the world was simply an open ocean as far as the eye could see. Something that would be quite provocative to the imagination and possibly allow for some explanations to unknown phenomena. But seeing as by simply heading a little ways north you will get to land that goes much further west without any water in the way, this holds very little water to it. But I still wanted to mention it.Governmental Site:The other potential use for this site that comes to mind is as a place of governance. The main claim for this comes from the large circular platform as it could have possibly served as a meeting place. The broken pillars present along the edge of the platform give rise to the possibility that it may have once been roofed. This roof was probably wooden as the floor of the platform is still visible and not a lumpy mess. A governmental complex would also give an explanation for the various offshoots to the other islands. With each island being home to a different aspect of the government. If this was the case, then it would explain why the only tower at the site exists in such a bizarre place. This being that it was where the military command structure was based. This theory does fall through a bit more than the ceremonial theory because of its location at the very edge of Inazuma. Being located there would make it much more vulnerable to an enemy attack and its total lack of defenses would make putting it there very risky. But on the other hand it could have been built during a time of prolonged peace where such things simply needn’t be taken into account. But this is all just speculation of course. Conclusion:Bit of a shorter one this time around. Mainly because there’s a lot less to talk about then my previous subjects but also because Tears of the Kingdom is out and I want to spend my time playing that. I've also been trying to use less pictures and more words in my posts which is why some things that would have had pictured references in the past don't in this post. I once again don’t have options for people so I’d love to see some suggestions for stuff to do in the future. I would also like to encourage others to do more things with ancient civilizations in Genshin Impact, it’s kinda boring having the only things to read about them being just my own work. But that’s all from me, I’m off to do boring things like college prep and fun things like TOTK.46 Originally posted by: u/Monkeydp81 On genshin Lore reddit re Posting here as i think the best way to in take lore theories is rather then have a million tabs open is to just have them read to you via tts so thats what im doing here

Did more research on animism (looked it up and basically just read what people were saying about it) and from what I& gained the more fitting word for what I&'m inclined to believe would be anthropomorphism. Which is a much longer word but the distinction is pretty significant.
Turns out I&'ve been taught a common misconception and the definition of animism is more about believing that the spiritual and the mundane are not distinct or separate. Which, yeah maybe if I& were more spiritual would probably be something I&'d align my& beliefs with, but what I& actually was looking for specifically the belief that every object has a consciousness. Maybe not a physical one, maybe a spiritual one, but hell if I& know how the spiritual world works and I&'m not about to pretend like I& do.
I& did see a pretty good explanation that, while arising from the animist-specific perspective about spirits and whatnot, dealt with the same issue - believing everything has the same mind as you or even most humans around you will just lead you to an identity crisis.
While the post was kind of dismissive of mass-produced objects as not really having souls, which. Okay well maybe souls specifically I& can't speak on that but I& am firmly of the opinion that they have perfectly fine minds. It did raise some good points that I& already tended to believe that many objects simply don't care enough about what you are doing in their presence. That if you do something embarassing, that doesn't necessarily mean that the object will perceive it as such - to it, you would be simply another animal doing animal things.
Another good point that I& actually started believing in way before, and have seen a lot in posic spaces as well, is that many tools like, or at the very least don't mind being used for their purpose. Of course I& can't speak for every object under the sun, especially not when I& can't read their minds or communicate with them, but if your body was made to do some task then you would definitely have a very different view on it from someone with, for example, a human body. To you it would be just a natural thing you do.
Yeah. Nothing new or revolutionary here, and I& may have overrambled, but that's what diaries are for, I& suppose!
