FFXIV Write Prompt #10: Channel

(( Let's consider this backdated to Jak's time prowling the ruins of Garlemald, hunting down basically anyone of Garlean nationality out in the ruins, earlier this year. That would be around the time of Rise, Fall, and Rise Again, and Cold Comfort! She believes in an eye for an eye, after all - she learned quite a lot from the Garleans during her captivity, and having no mercy was part of that. There's a reason I always side-eye Zenos' nihilistic commentary/outlook, because Jak sounds a lot like him at times! But as much as she hates to admit it, her ideology does sound a lot like theirs, at the end of the day: the strong rule the weak/The world is dog-eat-dog. Some days she rises above it! ...but not today. Violence ahead! ))

It was exceedingly rare that she chose to engage in banter, during combat - it was, more often than not, a waste of breath better utilized in staying level-headed and ahead of one's opponent. She'd rather have the next three moves planned, than fire off a snappy retort; those came before violence, anyways... like foreplay.

This was a rare occasion, however. It was closure. How many people survived what she had, and got the chance to deliver it back to their tormentors tenfold? She would suffer the bitter, aching fucking cold, if it meant taking her pound of flesh. If it meant delivering unto their people what had been done to hers.

Her heart skipped a beat, and the dark knight's vision swam red - she could taste the bile - but she couldn't stop what came next.

She had, some... years ago, now, been pushed past prior limits, by Ketsuchi. Her fear, his levin... she'd managed to... channel a new ability from her soul crystal with naught but raw fear and determination left to her. In the face of that which she most feared... she'd spit in the face of it, and found just how much her emotions could manipulate the stone's abilities, and she'd begun experimenting with trying to craft new abilities, or will them; she was an artist, after all... why couldn't she let her imagination and emotions run wild?

The subsequent eruption, and evisceration, of the other young woman upon a veritable forest of inky black... spikes? Thorns? Fangs? had been unintentional, however. The girl had to die, yes, but this - this slowed the Beast down. Gave her pause.

Hate is a forest of knives.

The diminutive woman, bundled in her armor of black and red, stood - a chill wind tugging at her cloak for a quiet moment - eyeing the sanguine threads that began to thread through the spikes... before they seemingly melted back into the snow, themselves.

As if they'd never been at all.

Jak had thought she wanted a battle, not...

The Miqo'te in the hood and faceless mask continued on, stepping over the broken shell of a woman who hadn't known when to stop.

Perhaps it had been a kindness, despite the twisted irony of using the fallen's own aether against her kin - but now the other wouldn't have to watch the rest perish.

BnHA Chapter 156: Deku Potter and the Cursed Child

Previously on BnHA: Chronostasis was revealed to be holding Aizawa prisoner on some lower level of the Neverending Basement. He has sexy clock hair which he’s used to basically paralyze Aizawa for the next hour. Deku fought Overhaul for a little bit at 20% OFA and it basically did nothing. Meanwhile Mirio tried to drag Eri away to safety, but ended up collapsing due to blood loss. He told Eri to go and hide, but she wasn’t able to take the guilt of thinking she’s responsible for all this death and carnage, and she went back and told Overhaul she’d go with him if he stopped hurting everyone and fixed them all back up. Overhaul said some more bullshit things which got Deku all fired up again, and our little green hero stumbled to his feet and shouted that he’d save Eri no matter what. And then THANK FUCK, Ryuukyuu and my badass ladies Tsuyu, Ochako, and Hadou came busting in out of nowhere. I really need this girl power squad to turn the tide here because tbh, I’ve had just about enough of this.

Today on BnHA: We flash back to see how the badass lady squad battled Katsukame, the giant vitality-stealing bad guy who kept sucking energy from everyone and converting it into his own power. Just as they were finally wrapping things up, “Deku” appeared and told them that their assistance was needed in the Neverending Basement. “Deku” of course turned out to be Toga, but that doesn’t really matter since in the end she helped the heroes out. Back in the present, Deku asks Ochako to help Nighteye while he goes after Overhaul and Eri. Overhaul tries to escape through the new hole in the ceiling, and Deku leaps after him. Meanwhile we learn through more flashbacks that Eri is actually the granddaughter of the Comatose Boss, and that she was abandoned by her mother (the boss’s daughter) after her quirk manifested and she somehow vanished her father. Overhaul was assigned to look after her and eventually learned that her quirk is able to rewind time. Back in the present (again), Eri’s quirk begins to awaken, and she leaps toward Deku’s arms.

(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’ve read up through chapter 185 now, so any ETAs will reflect that.)

(ETA: shoutout to @temperatezone who Did The Math and calculated that Toga probably has around 35 seconds’ worth of Deku blood, so this scene is indeed plausible, if just barely! and we’ll just have to wait and see if she actually used up all the blood she has with this stunt, or if we’ll be seeing not!Deku make any future appearances.)

Compress then used his quirk on himself?, and then simply sat around in one of their pockets waiting for the plan to go into effect.

but this all means that Toga and Twice were both somehow able to lie even under the influence of Nemoto’s quirk in chapter 149, though. so that’s weird. unless they somehow came up with this plan all on their own, in which case it technically wouldn’t have been Tomura’s plan, and so Nemoto’s wording of that particular question would have allowed them to say no. but that seems like a reach. then again, this all does, pretty much. so...)

and also, so we’re back to Twice making more than two copies of things, I presume? or did they do all this with only two sets of them

(ETA: @r5h helped me with this one back in 149; even though Twice can only make two copies of things, each of his clones has the same quirk, and so each of them can make two more copies, etc. etc. although this would mean Twice broke his self-imposed rule of not copying himself. but hey it was for a good cause)

anyway. so Twice is telling Compress that Eri is the core of the Precepts’ operation and that she’s just a little kid

The script for ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ is as bad (and as racist) as you think it could be

Shadow of the Colossus is considered by many within the Team Ico fanbase to be the video game that is neither suitable for film, or a story that could translate well as a script. Fumito Ueda’s “Design by Subtraction” approach, the intentional lack of clarity within the story itself, and the fact that the player is set against sixteen Colossi and nothing more, make approaching the idea of a movie difficult in the traditional sense where the feat might be easier to accomplish with games like Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, or Mortal Kombat, all of which take their cues from specific film genres.

Avocations for Guilermo del Toro to direct a Shadow of the Colossus film come and go because he is an admitted fan of the game, but the grand majority of SOTC fans remain unmoved from the position that it’s not a game that requires a film adaption.

Yet, there was an attempt. April 2009 Sony Pictures announced they would try to make a film adaptation with the cooperation of Fumito Ueda, yet nothing ever came of it. The next five years (most notable 2012 and 2014) would see talk of the SOTC film happening with different directors (Josh Trank, Seth Lochhead, Andrés Muschietti). Again, nothing happened, but, a script was actually written.

September 2017, a cinematographer named Dan Olson, chose to share with followers of his twitter account (@FormidableHuman) bits of a draft script for Shadow of the Colossus written by a man named Justin Marks (the screenwriter for the oft forgotten film, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring the late Michael Clarke Duncan and Kristin Kreuk, and Disney’s live-action remake of The Jungle Book). Marks was the screenwriter attached to the 2009 attempt.

He shared just a few passages he was willing to post in screenshot format. In his twitter thread (available below in readable paragraphs, or you can go to his twitter page linked behind the cut), Olson points out the racist presumptions of screenwriter Justin Marks, who envisions the society of Wander, Emon and Mono, driven by the economy of human and animal slavery. On top of that, their homeland is described in ways comparable to the X-Men’s Savage Land.

Wander is a slave with all the spirit and short temper of a [bad] YA protagonist (Olson compares Marks’ take on Wander to Tidus or Vaan of the Final Fantasy series. I don’t see that, but I’m also not in the “Wander’s a teenager” camp either).

Agro, a mean-spirited horse, becomes his companion through their shared experiences as slaves wanting to “run free”. 

Mono is a young and exotic sacrifice girl who speaks broken “Common Tongue” and is “moved” by Wander’s desire to defy fate (after she brings up the subject of sacrifice and the Forbidden Lands). Unfortunately, she is violently abused by a slovenly and drunkard of a father who kills her when he hits her hard enough to break her neck, thus triggering Wander’s journey to the Forbidden Lands. 

Also, Lord Emon is pure evil who tells Wander that he is less than nothing because he’s a slave.

For lack of a better word, Justin Marks, who might’ve had the right idea with attempting to flesh out the world with flashback for the purposes of film, gummed up the works when he envisioned a sparse world, completely uncomplicated by white and xenophobic ideas of foreigners, by otherizing the hell out of it. It’s like reading the Storm flashback segment in the Draft script of Bryan Singer’s X-Men, but worse.

October 2017, Dan Olson also took it upon himself to read the entire script that he happened upon on his Twitch channel. The video is four or so hours long and more than likely an exercise in torture. I have no intentions of watching it, but the video is linked behind the cut with the twitter thread.

All of this came to light through the community for a Lets Play group, Super Best Friends Play (also known as Two Best Friends Play) during their Lets Play of Bluepoint Games’ remake of the 2005 game. Woolie Madden (one of the three active members of SBFP) puts in the effort of reading Olson’s twitter thread during the fifth part of their LP and their Reddit community (also linked below).

Most of the time when things like this come out and it’s not exactly wide-spread, there’s reason to doubt it (and you def. take this with a grain of salt, though old news media rather confirms it indirectly). Yet, If the script discovery has proved anything, it’s that Shadow of the Colossus isn’t a concept that can be tackled without losing or twisting elements of what makes it a compelling game in the first place. And some things, that should have been forgotten were better lost.

If you haven't picked up on it yet, Mono is every "sexy savage" ever written. Wander, in this script, is an escaped slave who happens into Mono's village and steals Agro from her dad. Agro is a mean horse that her dad apparently keeps for no other reason than to abuse. But Wander tames him b/c they're both escaped slaves.

Alright, not to drag this on toooo long (I need to get to bed) I'll finish strong. In the game it's implied that Mono's death is institutional in some way, that she's maybe even a sacrifice. It pits Wander against things that are bigger and older than himself: tradition, the hierarchy, the colossi, Dormin. Wander's actions in assaulting/aiding these Bigger Things have consequences that he *clearly* doesn't fully appreciate. 

And those consequences are meant to be ambiguous b/c we're meant to consider them on a time scale of eons. This is supposed to be deliberately contrasted against Wander's very *now* teenage concern of "hot girl is dead but I want living girl 😢".

Thor is reduced to a slave on Planet Goldblum, where he plays "The Grandmaster".

I like Jeff Goldblum, but he's always kinda creepy isn't he?? Even if he's playing the hero, I'm never really sure about him - that's why he's perfect the the role of Grandmaster.

If we break it down, what the grandmaster is into... we go to a dark place.

He has enslaved a whole planet, but has brainwashed them to enjoy their lives - pretty much through these (battle to the death) blood sports that I'm sure UFC will evolve into.

He buys and sells these slaves, tortures people, and brainwashes the women of the planet to engage in birthday orgies with him.

Now, you're about 21 and rebellious, and Uncle Creepy is throwing a party, and you're invited! :) - sorry to paint that picture; the horror movies must still be effecting me.

But, the party you go to actually ends up being fun! - and that's this movie; a fun, drunken party that you get to live vicariously through Thor.

And he has got some drunken friends on this journey:

Loki (of course), the drunk loser that everyone picks on.

Every party needs entertainment.

Tessa Thompson!

- she plays that angry, badass drunk that you get into trouble with.... but badass enough not to get y'all caught.

The Hulk!

- that big, sick drunk who had way too many like three hours ago, but they keep on going. Eventually they turn green and ruin everything around them with their sick. Not so much fun if you're the host, but if you're not, you'll walk away with a lot of fun memories.

Lastly, Banner!

- as the confused old person at the party. You're not sure why they're there, they're not sure why or even how they're there... but they're cool, so you roll with it. There he is to Thor's right, with that look on his face the entire movie.

And Thor!

- the jock you rode in with. He's so funny in this one. Chris Hemsworth should def do more comedy. He cranks everything up, and makes it even more fun; not just the comedic lines, but his chemistry with all of these actors, the fight scenes, the poking fun at that horrible Thor 2 movie, the plentiful easter eggs in this movie, and the cgi.

I thought (by looking at the trailer) that this movie was going to overdo it with the cgi, but they didn't. Whenever they amped up the effects it was needed, and worked to perfection.

You'll also find some fun new characters in this movie, along with a special appearance from one of Hollywood's favorite actors.

My only complaint about the movie was...

You know how the best parties have themes (Christmas? Halloween? Birthday? Cocaine?)?? If there's no theme, I find that the party either gets out of hand by means of someone overcompensating, or the party can simply be lame.

This movie had no.... real plot. But, that's ok. The people at this party are so fun that you never stop being entertained long enough to realize the weakness in the plot... or the one dimensional villain. You're drunk, you're dancing, you're seeing wild visions (cuz uncle creepy probs put something creepy in the community punch), and you're having a good time with this movie.

I love how comic book movies have branched out in different ways. "Deadpool" was an edgy rated R flick. "Logan" was a deep drama. Those mutants have a horror themed film coming out soon. And movies like this one are more comedic.

The next one I want to see is a romantic comedy starring The Hulk and Black Widow.

Maybe others join in the lovin as well. The Avengers version of "Love Actually". Or Spiderman's version of "Fifty Shades" Imagine Spiderman sneaking his way into homes, and swinging people away to his sex web.

...

... well, maybe not... that exactly, but I love the growing flexibility, especially on Netflix. Keep it up, Marvel!

the name anastasia was given to her by mary when she unofficially adopted her and took her on the run w her & neil

like how neil keeps the middle name abram in all his identities, louisa keeps anastasia in all her identities

she also keeps damia, much to mary’s chagrin

when they were younger neil used to call lousia ‘DD’ for damia dolores

now he calls her sia (which, btw, is hebrew for victory)

she calls him abe & abram in private (mostly abe)

neil was the one to come up with the name louisa when they went to millport

she’s nathan’s and lola’s daughter so she’s neil’s half sister

she’s older than him by a year or two

they look exactly the same so they often had to pretend to be twins

also she’s shorter than him (by like an inch) which he teases her about constantly

btw dolores is the full name of lola and means the same thing

she was born deaf, master at reading lips in 5 different languages (including english, obvi)

also a master at sign language but has hardly ever had a need to use it because she can communicate w neil using eye contact so,

has trouble pronouncing words because of her hearing; her voice is all hollow and choppy

neil finds comfort in it anyway

super strong & super fast; her arms are thick and muscular af

she has a curvy athletic w a tiny waist that’s super sexy btw un f

also she can most definitely bench press anyone of the the foxes

maybe not matt or kevin but,

can also run as fast as neil

she isn’t a ‘rabbit’ like neil is though

she also doesn’t have an obsession w exy like neil does either, she only plays to be closer to him

she’s a dealer btw

she’s also a freakin’ amazing dealer like woah

she tends to be quiet and aloof; louisa usually only speaks out of irritation or to defend neil when necessary

part of the reason she doesn’t bother communicating is cus it’s too bothersome to try and talk to people who either 1. don’t know asl or 2. can’t read her like neil can

she has sociopathic tendencies,,

maybe borderline psychopathic

she gets pissed easily (but it doesn’t show thanks to her usually display of blank indifference)

enjoys picking on people; she has a dark and sarcastic sense of humor

also,,, she’s v sadistic and has a temper that rivals her fathers

it’s a couple of the things she inherited from nathan besides his looks

loves toying with her enemies and prolly feels most alive when she’s in a fight and/or about to kill someone

she killed a lot of nathan’s men while on the run

usually when his people found them she’d be the first to figure it out & tell mary to take neil and run ahead & she’d catch up with them when she was done

at the beginning she cared only for neil; she’s always had a strong sense of loyalty, devotion, & maternal instincts towards neil ever since he was born

neil is the only person louisa treats with a sort of gentleness

i.e. when she touches him: her fingers are always light and soft as if she’d break if she put too much force,

she often plays with his hair, it relaxes him,

they cuddle a lot

they’ve done it ever since they were kids, it started when neil was too afraid to go to sleep at night cus of his father

when they first moved into the fox tower louisa would sneak into neil’s dorm room and cuddle w him for the first few weeks

(they also shared the couch when they were staying w wymack before school started),

she’d sometimes sing lullabies or tell random, made up stories to help calm him down when he has nightmares or panics, despite her voice

neil highkey finds her voice very soothing

when she becomes closer to the foxes she becomes just as fiercely protective of them as she is of neil (but, ofc, she’ll always hold neil to a higher standing lmao)

she also starts talking with them, not by much tho like a short sentence every now and then

but the foxes learn to read louisa as well as neil can so

they also as neil to teach them asl to surprise louisa (when they showed her she had the biggest smile on her face and so much love in her eyes all of the foxes started crying; except andrew ofc)

she’s never cared for neil’s mother, like, at all

it was mostly because mary beat neil and no one hurts neil

whenever mary would raise her hand to beat neil louisa would crush her wrists or bruise her ribs in return

nothing too major cus they needed mary to still be able to run when needed

she respected mary on some level tho because she stole money and ran to protect neil which lousia can relate too

tho lousia wouldn’t have been so cowardly. she would’ve just killed nathan

she isn’t scared of nathan, her mother or the moriyamas like neil is

she doesn’t have nightmares

she doesn’t live in constant fear for her life

she isn’t worried about making it through the year alive

she isn’t worried about becoming like her father (she basically is as this point)

she isn’t afraid of her natural appearance because it looks too much like nathan’s

she is afraid of not being strong enough to protect neil

she’s afraid of losing him; it’s the one thing she has nightmares about

she’s very skilled with knives and carries like 50 different sized ones on her person at all times

she actually has a great sense of fashion

she hated the shit mary made her and neil wear and lowkey blames mary for neil’s sad excuse for fashion

when mary dies she fixes neil’s wardrobe

she usually only wears pants & long sleeve shirts & jackets

not because she’s hiding her scars tho (which, trust me, she has a lot of scars, like 50% of her body has scars and she get more when she goes with neil to evermore)

she actually likes her scars; she’s quite proud of them, shows she’s survived a lot of shit

part of the reason she covers up is cus of neil (ofc)

when he used to he see her scars he was also reminded of how most of those were because of him, because louisa was protecting him

he always hated that he could never protect her when all she’s done is protect him

he often feels like a burden to her and her scars kinda amplify his self-hate

and louisa noticed this a long time ago so, she covers up

the other have of the reason is cus it helps to hide her disgustingly large amount of knives (like srsly she has so many)

she often forgets to put in her contacts at times or redye her hair when her roots start growing so neil has to remind her

even though louisa is way more like nathan then neil will ever be, he always feels safe with her and loves her more than anything else in the world

he’s just as protective of louisa as she is of him

tho he spent his life running so he isn’t has strong as she is and can’t protect her like she can protect him

he’ll try to nonetheless ofc cus: martyr.

and being the Sass Master that he is neil is always the first one to drag a bitch verbally when they insult louisa

neil does the talking, louisa does that fighting; brain and brawns i guess you could say???

btw louisa is a history geek like kevin is (her favorite is mythology)

remember when i mentioned louisa telling neil stories?

most of them are mythology ones

her best subject is history

surprisingly enough louisa becomes closest with nicky, renee & kevin

she’s close w all of the foxes ofc

but nicky is her Sunshine

and renee gets her the most besides andrew

but andrew is neil’s and she respects that

and for some reason her and kevin share this weird bond and they become inseparable like she is w neil

and to the utter shock of everyone louisa is also as close w aaron as she is w neil & kevin

and i know this is an unpopular opinion but i like aaron

i hate his homophobic slurs with a passion but Goddess Nora mentioned that he became that way because of the environment that he grew up in

and i feel like aaron has potential to be better (there are so many aaron hcs out there that relate to how i perceive him in this hc but im too lazy to find them and link them,,)

so! somehow, someway aaron and louisa have a bonding moment idk what yet i haven’t thought that far yet

(and this is basically an about hc not a fic hc so,,,)

i do know that it happens sometime after the drake incident possibly??? idk

and they talk, a lot mostly in asl (besides neil, andrew and herself aaron is the best at asl)

aaron confesses to her about all the shit he went through with her mom and andrew and how he hates andrew or that he hates nicky

and he tells her how he hates himself the most and that he doesnt really hate andrew or nicky and that he wants to be better

so louisa helps him, listens to him when he needs an ear, drops little pieces of advice here and there

and no one knows this is going on for like the longest time

they only find out when nicky catches aaron and louisa sitting on the couch together in their dorm room playing video games and aaron is at shouting in disbelief because how can someone whos never played a goddamn video game in her life be so fucking good!? and louisa cackling like a freakin’ cartoon villain as she continues to crush aaron in w/e game they were playing

nicky was Shook

he told everyone of course

or something like that again idk,,,

also, louisa doesn’t go pro like neil does

instead, she becomes ichirou’s right hand

when neil finishes talking to ichirou about his life, ichirou tells neil to wait outside while he talked to louisa

and ichirou asks louisa if she wants the same thing her brother wanted

and louisa was confused cus like she didn’t say or do anything during the entire time ichirou was talking with neil so why ask?

she didn’t care what she did when she got out of collage as long as she was near neil so she can protect him

but neil had andrew to protect him now so… was she really needed?

ichirou spoke to her about how she killed her father’s men (he got reports i guess, nathan’s men were kengo’s men technically)

people were sent to the last place they heard from nathan’s followers and they found their bodies bloody and mangled

louisa smirked ever so slightly, nodding her head to ichirou’s implied question (“was it you?”)

so, ichirou makes a different deal with louisa and she becomes his right hand and is held at a much, much higher status than nathan

i don’t know how i’d want their relationship to be though im caught between it being just a business thing, a way for her to protect neil from the inside as well

or have them have like a mutual respect for each other w louisa being almost as fiercely loyal to him as she is to neil (but again, neil will always be #1)

i also kinda want her and ichirou to get together at some point

most likely when louisa graduates from college

p.s. when her and neil get kidnapped by nathan and lola louisa puts up a hell of a fight

like she hurts lola bad

and nathan too

but they drugged her so she was pretty weak and couldn’t kill them like she wanted

it was the most scared she’s ever been cus lola was hurting neil while nathan was hurting her and she knew lola was only toying with neil for fun but god what is lola killed him?

she’s never felt more useless in her life

is was also the first time she’s ever felt so scared

p.s.s. louisa does change her name officially to louisa anastasia damia josten w neil

i think that’s it for now? maybe i’ll write lil drabbles or smth in the future?? i’ve never been good at writing but i do wanna see louisa come to life,,, the struggle is real
