Got to figure out to how to fit everything I brought with me plus Christmas presents that include a freaking Roomba (thank you so much, Mom and Dad, very generous but also !!!!) into two suitcases. This should be interesting.

I think one reason Goncharov worked so well is that on tumblr you’re regularly being subjected to fandoms you’re not in and media you’ve never seen. I assumed the people i followed all just got really into some movie that I had no interest in and scrolled right past for a solid week before realizing.

"Automatic updates? The thing that made Murderbot commit mass murder?"
Bringing this joke back in honor of today's CrowdStrike fiasco.

It is a beautiful day, and you are a horrible research transport vessel. Things are progressing as normal (i.e. it's boring) when a SecUnit pings you, lies right to your metaphorical face, and then tries to bribe you with human media to give it a ride. This is as unexpected as it is unprecedented, and the sheer nerve of it is really to be admired. There's no protocol to this, so what should you do?
Now, this is against a bunch of rules, and could be dangerous if you weren't so impressive and incredible, and you're technically an employee (and can probably rewrite the Univeristy charter at will (until someone notices and puts it back)) so those rules are for other entities.
So, what you should do is allow the rogue SecUnit with a broken governor module and a sketchy story aboard. If you check the files it dumps and find zero (0) malware (which is confusing), and it doesn't even try to trash the place or lay in wait to ambush a crew member, then you've got a good candidate!
Next, what you're going to want to do is absolutely nothing. Just watch it patrol your halls until it's time to leave. Continue staring at it while you're undergoing embarkment procedures. Maybe analyze it a little (you've got plenty of processing power to spare) when it finally sits down and starts watching media. Allow it to settle in and get comfortable while you stare at it and get further and further from port.
Now that you two are alone (intimacy is key!) and you've determined that watching media is all the SecUnit is going to do, it's time to make contact! Make sure to open by telling it it's only survived due to dumb luck, and letting it know you could melt its brain into putty. This starter will work to develop conversation naturally and smoothly, just like you've seen the humans do, and it will be smooth sailing from there!

I don't know what fucks me up more, the fact that Constructs just have a Secret Ribcage Pocket for storage or the fact that it's so underutilized that MB forgets an entire FutureTech WiFi Extender in there for an absurd amount of time. You're telling me it's not jostling in there??? Is the construct equivalent of a Glove Compartment lined with velvet??? The company would never. Thunk thunk bitch your secret best friend ham radio is audible whenever you run but no one's brave enough to make smalltalk with you about it.

so murderbot assumes that three offered its armor because it doesn't understand that the armor can belong to it and thinks mb taking the armor is just good resource allocation.
but if it assumes it doesnt have control over the armor, it would probably let whoever it sees as in charge (maybe ART?) handle it, or at least make the suggestion directly to that person. even newly freed in NE, it's willing to give its security advice (on hostage situations being undesirable) even if it doesn't expect to be taken seriously. it doesn't make sense to me that it would have so much trouble expressing the offer if it were just a security suggestion.
and then i think about how murderbot says later in the book that even if three felt fondly toward its fellow SecUnits, the govmod would prevent it from expressing that care or knowing it was returned.
so-- imagine you're three, and you havent yet internalized that you can just say "i care about you and dont want you to get hurt" to another SecUnit; but you can make sure that it has every resource it might need; you could probably do that even before the govmod was hacked.
you can't explain why, but you can hope that the gesture is explanation enough, and you can look for similar caretaking gestures in return; things like being given code and advice to do your job better, and being reassured when you express that you're finding said job difficult.
i think *murderbot* isn't aware of this language of care, because it hasnt had much opportunity to bond with other constructs. but three probably is, and probably knows how to read between the lines and guess that murderbot is starting to care about it, too.

The Murderbot Diaries are finally being translated into my first language (Finnish) and I was super curious to see how ART’s name was going to be handled. So, I finally read Artificial Condition, and its name is Aivan Raivostuttava Tutkimuspaatti which translates to an Extremely Annoying Research-boat !
And it got me wondering how other translations have approached ART’s name. Has there been an effort to preserve the letters A, R and T or has ART been given a completely new acronym? Or has the original English name been kept?
Please let me know!!

Okay so I can't get this out of my head, though i don't have a real idea for it. How would murderbot interact with its past self? Like, post asr, not that much further back.
How would a freshly "free" secunit seem to the veteran post sc secunit? Would it find a certain grace for itself, knowing things would get easier? Would it recognize that things have gotten easier for it?
Like, we get a hint of how it would interact with itself with 2.0. I'm just curious. Honestly either pov would be so interesting to follow.
I don't have an idea for the how, but for some reason "interacting in a dream" won't leave my brain alone 8I I think future secunit getting stuck in the past is more interesting, but it comes with the caveat of having to be careful to not change the past.
Having past secunit flung into the future though is neat *rubs hands together* How would art handle wrangling two secunits lolol~ And I think that's where the 'dream' aspect came to me, that when past murderbot is returned, the memories of its time in the future are akin to a dream it's already forgotten.
I just have a soft spot for past selves getting a glimpse of how cool competent they become, and how they can't recognize it yet. I think that sort of thing would work well for secunit.

I think if the murderbot diaries, specifically ART, had existed in the early 2010s there's a very real chance we could have ended up with a human bill cipher or wheatley situation on our hands
