when i was a teenager i had this neighbor about my age and she had ALL THE BARBIES! i mean her room was covered in Barbies in boxes. her room had this shelf thingy that went around ceiling that displayed all the fancy anniversary/holiday Barbies.

one day we were lying in her bed and i looked over i joking asked her why she had so many. she looked me straight in the eyes in a super monotone voice says "i really dont know." after a few minutes of awkward silence we went outside and ate freeze pops in her garage.

anyways, what im getting at is that im super hyped for the Barbie movie!!

something. about. the horror of being sent on an impossible (death) quest and obligations and hospitality politics. the trauma of not having a home, and then the trauma of being in a house that becomes actively hostile to you, one that would swallow you whole and spit out your bones if you step out of line. all of this is conditional, your existence continues to be something men want gone.

it's about going back as far as I can with the perseus narrative because there's always a version of a myth that exists behind the one that survives. the missing pieces are clearly defined, but the oldest recorded version of it isn't there! and there's probably something older before that!! but it's doomed to forever be an unfilled space, clearly defined by an outline of something that was there and continues to be there in it's absence.

and love. it's also about love. even when you had nothing, you had love.

on the opposite side of the spectrum, this is Not About Ovid Or Roman-Renaissance Reception, Depictions And Discourses On The Perseus Narrative.

edit: to add to the above, while it's not about Ovid, because I'm specifically trying to peel things back to the oldest version of this story, Ovid is fine. alterations on the Perseus myth that give more attention Medusa predate Ovid by several centuries. this comic is also not about those, either! there are many versions of this story from the ancient world. there is not one singular True or Better version, they're all saying something.

She’s a horrible driver. Her only family is her aunt. She’s so incredibly cavalier about her dad dying. She’s a pawn in Gatsby’s plan and she doesn’t seem to care beyond thinking he’s crazy. She loves Daisy. She couldn’t care less what happens to Daisy. She claims to have a fiancé and the narrator can’t decide whether she’s lying. She’s in a situationship with said narrator. Literary critics have been calling her gay since the 1940s. She’s integral to the themes of the book. She doesn’t matter to the plot at all, she’s just there to look good and be a foil to Nick and to Daisy. She’s the only sane person in the whole book and she’s definitely got something wrong with her. I wonder if she’s free Saturday

So. Apparently halfas are like phoenixes or something, which Danny would’ve really liked to know. 

See, usually with ghosts if they’re forced to retreat to their cores they reform as was, but apparently, since they’re still partially living, schrodinger's people and all that, halfas have to regrow their body from scratch. At least that’s what he’s understanding from Frostbite. 

But how come he has to deal with it? It’s Dan’s fault for trying to pull such a stunt! Oh, it’s either him or Vlad? Well fuck, he might have calmed down and is going to therapy in both the living realm and the Zone, but he’s waaay not equipped to raise a child except for like, monetarily wise. 

Well dammit, how long will this core incubation thing last, he has his new job in… let him check which offer he accepted again… He has his new job in Coast City that he needs to finish packing for and then all the rest of the stuff to do. 

What do you mean it’ll take months?! He doesn’t have months?! Urgh, fine. At least being a mortician isn’t that exciting, nor dangerous. Just hand him Dan’s core and he’ll figure things out for the living side of things. He’s sure Tucker and Sam wouldn’t be against helping, if only to try and claim favorite aunt or uncle spots.

barbie spoilers?? maybe?? but idk why one of the things i loved most about the movie that i’m not seeing anyone else talk about (because maybe it’s a hard thing to bring up, or “bad” to talk about, or whatever, but) is that sharon rooney features so prominently as one of the main Barbies in Barbieland. i know sharon rooney from her role as rae earl in “my mad fat diary” where it was the first time i was seeing myself and my struggles with binge eating disorder and depression and fatness being portrayed on tv, and while maybe it wasn’t a super mainstream show (idk how popular it was in the uk), it was a show that was seeing me. 

and now sharon rooney is playing a barbie in THE barbie movie, and she is not “plus size barbie” or “body neutrality barbie” or like any of mattel’s recent attempts to make barbie have a normal body despite the original doll’s unrealistic proportions. she’s just a barbie!!!! she’s as much of a barbie as any of the other barbies!!!! idk why that’s giving me such a thrill especially to see her in the movie and i can’t really articulate what it is (that a person without margot robbie’s body shape/size is perfectly, evenly on par with her in a movie of this caliber -- not the main character or star, obviously, but is equally considered as beautiful and perfect as stereotypical barbie and all the other barbies just by being herself) -- but i loved loved loved loved loved it and i’m so happy that it was just a *thing* without needing to be quantified.

me and my little sister, who has never interected with sonic media (minus the first two movies), went to go see sonic 3 (my second time, her first) and I made sure to give bizarre spoilers that don't make sense unless you've watched it.

i told her the movie has a sad guy and his explosive (ex)husband. i told her that the government wanted a little girl dead. i told her that knuckles and tails are happy that an elderly man dies. she had no idea what I was talking about.

this little ten year old looked at me at the end (pre credits), practically with tears in her eyes, and said, "please tell me eggman comes back in the next movie"
