Okay. So Imma just come out and say it.

Y'all who read fanfic. You. Need. To. Start. Commenting. On. Fics.

I have been told I'm a great writer. I've been told I'm spot-on with characterization. I've been told I'm great at making readers feel and experience what the characters are feeling and experiencing. Been told it's like the reader is in the room as everything plays out.

However, when I see that my fics have upwards of 1K hits and maybe 100-300 comments and maybe 40-100 kudos and not even hitting triple digits in the bookmarks/subscriptions to a fic... Well, what would you think in my shoes?

Most likely, if you're like me, you're thinking all kinds of negative things (especially if you have mental illness/ADHD/neurodivergency of some kind). Stuff like... Oh, those other people are just being nice (not fair to them so I try not to think this way but negative self talk doesn't play nice with me).

Or I think... Okay so they checked it out. They had to click on the fic for it to even register the hit, right? So why don't I at the very least have more kudos? That's the easiest option on there (though it's like a like on here; if you are gonna leave kudos please also leave a comment), right? So what was wrong with my fic that I don't have more kudos at least.

But then I get on here and see so many comments and reblogs on FANART (still not enough for them either though lbr). THE POINT IS... If you read a fic. If you read it and liked it, you all really need to start commenting.

It doesn't even have to be long paragraphs or quoting or any of the ✨ big comments ✨ stuff. You could leave an emoji that be showing me what my fic or update got you feeling. You can do keyboard smash. If the author asks for it, you can leave constructive criticism (but only if the author has actively asked for it; if they haven't or given you permission, then don't). You can absolutely do big comment things too.

One of my favorite type of comments to get are the quoting ones. You just copy/paste and then say what you liked about it or what it made you feel or your reaction to it. Things like that. I love when my readers tell me their fave parts in an update. Or quote a line and tell me their thoughts and feels. Just yes.

We are far too advanced in this day and age and fanfiction and fandom are wholly more accepting than it used to be but for some reason, comments and reactions have become almost non-existent compared to when I was 15. And I was... Pretty cringy in my writing back then but I can admit that. But every chapter I'd get at least 8-10 comments. A chapter!

Even earlier in my Twst series I was getting A LOT more comments and with every fic it seems to have dropped significantly.

To me, to my brain, that tells me that my writing is suddenly sucky or I lost my talent or I'm not actually as great a writer as I was told because then why aren't more people commenting.

You might try to argue and say you're shy. Do you comment on order things? Do you tack onto a reblog to put out some addition to the original post? Do you chat with people in the fandom? Do you comment on fanart?

Then what makes a fanfic any different? (This is not including smut fics because I get but necessarily wanting it tied back to you. But if you open ao3 in a browser you aren't logged into ao3 on, you can (as long as the author has allowed it) post a comment anonymously. Yeah!)

You might say oh well I don't have time to comment right now. But you had time to read the fic? You had time to reblog that shit post? You had time to comment on the tags on a fanart you really loved? Thing is, unless you want to write a long one, comments do not take that long to leave. They really don't.

If you're worried the author doesn't want to hear from you—I'll stop you right there. The author ABSOLUTELY wants to hear from you.

So now is the time to stop making excuses to be lazy. You are reading really great fan literature for free. The least you can do as a thank you and to show support is to COMMENT. ON. THE. FIC.

And if you wanna really make an author's day and help support them and their work, REC the fic. REC the Author's work list. You can do that to friends you know would like it or even better, make a post about the fics and link your recs.

It's really not that hard and we should not have to beg. Realize the blessing you have that fics you would enjoy exist for free and do your part. COMMENT.

Feel free to delete this ask and definitely 100% NOT looking for a fight but I saw this tag (#all I know is that armour looks so much more practical than just relying on Aura!) and wanted to ramble a little :)

So on one hand I definitely get where you are coming from vibe wise. However, in my mind given that even the weakest Grimm can tear through cement and metal with ease, I never really felt Armor was useful. Barring two Aura users fighting until a mutual Aura break which can happen but is pretty rare.

Thus, I tend to assume armor is more about presentation, personal style and perhaps a sort of placebo as it won't actually save someone from a swing of a Beowolves claw and so wouldn't reduce the amount of Aura one needs to use to protect themselves from harm.

That's just me though & I do get the desire to see them wearing pragmatic armor regardless. Again feel free to delete if you don't like this ask & I legit love the tags you put on the stuff you reblog, such fun!

No worries, those are very valid points, and a useful reminder of how strong even comparatively minor Grimm are! And also how strong the protection Aura provides is, with how it can withstand what conventional armour can't.

That said I guess armour could perhaps serve some purpose for deflecting blows a bit, and for giving a bit of protection from environmental damage?

It occurs to me that a Hard Light Dust suit of armour could be very useful, if also every expensive, if it could conform to the body shape of the wearer and the emitter things could be entirely on the inside...

Babysitters Guide to Turtle Mutants is my TMNT fan iteration.

in Babysitters Guide the turtles were mutated with splinters dna basically as soon as they hatched. and with the first two (leo and mikey) they were mutated with a secondary dna as well. leo was mutated with the dna of a inland taipan and mikey a scrub jay. the second two were mutated with the secondary dna later. donnie is mutated with a wolf's dna and splinter escapes the lab they live in before raph can be mutated a second time

when they escaped the lab their ages are as follows leo: 16 mikey: 14 donnie: 6 and raph: 2. the whole reason that splinter takes off with the boys when he does is because the scientists decided that they were going to mutate him and he did not want to be mutated. when they lived in the lab leo and mikey had a really shit life they used leo's venom to create a sedative which they then turned around and used on mikey repeatedly causing mikey to get addicted to it. when they leave splinter disappears for days at a time leaving leo to take care of his younger brothers. a year after the escape leo blows and basically kicks splinter out. for the next two years the boys don't stay in one place longer than two months. until they decide to move to new york. and so they do and leo promised that they wouldn't have to move again.

so once they move to new york leo puts out an add for a babysitter needed. because as much as he loves his brothers sometimes he needs a break but he does not trust mikey to watch donnie and raph. also bonus of if whoever answers ends up being awful donnie is allowed to basically use them as his chew toy. and who answers the add but april. who is suspiciously okay with going to an abandoned warehouse for the job. leo ends up intrigued and lets her stay. and she ends up becoming great friends with leo and helping him work with all the quirks of their chaotic life. she takes donnie to the park so he has the chance to just run and get his zoomies out. she holds raph when he gets scared and leo isn't there. and is just a good someone for leo to lean on. the only turtle that april doesn't immediately bond with is mikey. and she doesn't quite understand but she tries to be there for him anyway.

and she does find out why he acts toward her the way he does three years later. when splinter comes and finds them five years and hundreds of miles away from where he left them, and he had been mutated, into drumroll a rat. splinter comes and tries to convince the boys to come with him. because "he's their father and blah blah blah" but raph doesn't even remember splinter donnie does but just barely. to them leo is their dad. leo is who has raised them for six years. splinter shows up out of nowhere and leo tells mikey to take raph and april and start packing because they had to leave asap. raph is understandably upset and it causes mikey to break as well. this was their home leo had promised it was forever. and here they were having to up and leave again. april watches as mikey breaks and admits to things he hadn't even told leo. and april offers a solution to the whole mess.

I found another link that I COMPLETELY forget what is does… My Bad. very much not a post about Cole, yes I brought up a question of theirs that got answered but that was in another post as an example of poor question selection and how it felt shitty in context of "hey I'm gonna give all of this attention to this last question" and getting that, which was lame (maybe I'm out of touch here, I'm not in any big servers or cliques, I'm not aware of the role the glasses play as a "lightning rod" still, as u say, or that it was still relevant. to me it has been made pretty clear (as Laura said) in campaign that she needs them but doesn't have them (I couldn't care less if people chose to make their own art with her wearing them, I'm aware of what making choices u enjoy for ur own fanart is), therefore my frustration on that getting asked. you have picked a post out of a few I made and q's I answered that would give this context (and how I'm more frustrated by the show as a whole as well as general fandom behaviour) . the most tasteless question by far was about gendering the future kids, that is what I'm annoyed at when I'm talking about needing your own headcanons confirmed, idk who made it and I didn't put much thought into paying attention to names behind them because at the end of the day I was just noting the overall quality of questions, I'm not gonna change my opinion on the question based on the person behind it. I also think it will always be valid to critique media you care about and also quesiton the behaviours of people that share space with you(as u are with me rn) (so yes I see u people saying "lol get over the term girlfailure, we got bigger issues going on in the world" then a moment later being like "omg cr fandom has so much casual misogyny" like yeah, you're partaking in casual misogny babe. yes I'm aware people disagree with this. this is my blog, I'm a person with opinions) I have since spoken to people who submitted questions, none of which got answered and people admit they sent both more in depth and lighthearted ones. yes from that I can conclude that the issue lies more with the curation, but it doesn't change the fact that I feel frustrated, and I had said that yes Laura is probably just picking out anything that looks like a quesiton in a quickly moving chat, u can see how she deflated when getting far enough through some of them.

once again, this whole post jumping into Cole defense is just showing that you're also agitated by something in the moment without the actual context you're "having to assume" and that's fair, but it's arguably just as reactionary as what you're saying I did. yes, I think the fandom behaviour needs to be different if it's going to have this much impact on the actual content of a show, that's the main thing here, I don't like the feeling of being catered or pandered to if this is what they think fans want to see, yes maybe a lot of this is me being reactive to that feeling. it's a blog. I'm sharing my opinions in the moment. I want others to see that despite the fact I make a fuck tonne of shipping art, I don't actually want that being lip-serviced like those are my needs during the sparse oppurtunities that we get for deeper character answers.

OK????!!! do you feel righteous now? you don't think i 100% support them taking all the time off they need tor recover from this? that I'm not sympathetic? you really saying hey excuse you, don't be a bully, fires have happened? when the person I'm apparently targeting from your post is not cast or crew? (or in california, as far as I'm aware) like what? that's the "unkind" thing to say right there, I get that things are super rough and Laura is recovering from a lost voice because of everything going on. maybe they didn't need to rush it, maybe that doesn't change the fact they still recorded and chose the questions they did? I shouldn't be surprised by the fireside chat being the state it was, seeing as I don't follow any CR themed blogs myself or really go into the tags because I find it frustrating but still, the bleed over of fanon is depressing and a lot of you are showing your asses in terms of how you don't actually gaf about the characters or the story the players have chosen to tell.

I love my au's, I love my headcanons, I love my not quite canon ships, but they're for me and the people who chose to enjoy them if they want to. and what makes creating those things more fulfilling is trying to really be true to the character it's about, otherwise just go play with OCs

Hello, this is going to be long, but I really need to ask. Why do you claim to like and support Vassien, even reblog Vassien posts and fanart, but then reblog Elriel posts that speak bad about Lucien?? Is not even critizing the character, is calling him a shitshow and even worse. As a Vassien shipper I don't like this. I follow you for your Elriel and Elain content but I can't understand why you do this. Many Elriels say they like Vassien but I've seen them writing about how much they dislike and even hate Lucien, even in the Lucien tag. I like both Elriel and Vassien and I don't get why you would spend so much time in a character you loathe. Some even called him an abuser and days later reblogged a post about how Vassa and Lucien are going to be endgame. If they think he's an abuser, why do they ship him with Vassa? Some even participated in Vassien week, which happened recently. This annoys me because I think it's very hypocritical. The Vassien community is small and some of us are usually into other ships too. We try to keep our community umproblematic and positive but is very hard like this. And I say this because most of the people doing that are Elriels. I do thank the ones that actually ship Vassa and Lucien because they like them and create content but the people that ship Vassien and then spend hours online writing about how much they hate Lucien need to be stopped.

Quite simple, really. I am not a monolithic person who only likes ONE THING.

I can like and appreciate various characters, and still see that they are flawed and imperfect.

In my house, I love and respect Nesta Archeron--can I also say that she was an absolute douchebag at certain times? Can I say that she was incredibly rude, petulant, self-pitying, lazy and mean? Totally. But she is a complex character, to whom I relate on many levels, whose pain I understand, and whose reactions I get as well. I KNOW I'd behave very similarly in some instances. She is a mirror to myself and I don't always love what I see.

Do I love Rhys? Yes! He was my first ACOTAR love. Do I have a problem with some of his decisions? You bet! Do I hate how he treated some of his closest people, including Feyre? Um, YEAH.

Same goes for Lucien. Has he done good things? Yes. Has he done bad things? Also, yes. No he is not a perfect cinnamon roll who's never put the wrong foot forth. He is a pretty complex and interesting character like a lot of them are.

Do I like Vassien as a ship? Yes, because it makes sense to me, and I would like to see it happen. It makes a whole lotta more sense than Elucien for example. But honestly, if I see great Elucien art, or something that I find interesting and attractive, I'll reblog that too, so much so that people ask me if I am an Elucien? I am not, obviously, but it doesn't mean that I can't appreciate certain things about the ship.

Also, when I reblog certain things, it doesn't mean that I agree 100% with everything that they say. Yeah, the verbiage of the original post was a little rough, but I agreed with the general sentiment.

Now, just for future reference, for everyone--the only ship that i cannot stand, will never support and that genuinely gives me the heebies is Gwynriel. I cannot deal with Gwynriel on any level: I don't like anything about it, I hate the potential dynamic, I hate how problematic it is on every level, I find it ridiculous, juvenile, boring, uninspiring, recycled and unoriginal.

It doesn't mean that I hate Gwyn or Azriel. I simply hate them together as a romantic couple.

Lucien and Vassa together intrigue me, I think there is a lot to work with there, from a narrative standpoint. I think they could have an amazingly interesting story. But it doesn't mean that anyone is above criticism.

i don’t know how to put this into words on twitter so i am once again using this blog to vent about my thoughts so, sorry in advance lol

i agree that actors/show writers/directors/ etc etc shouldn’t be tagged in every little thing. i don’t think people should constantly tag them for answers to certain things. there’s fandom etiquette in place for both the actors/show runners and the fans because fandom is a space for fans, and when people who work on the show get involved it can be awkward and dicey for everyone

but on the other hand, these people who work on shows are adults who can make their own choices. i would hope that they know their own contracts well enough to know what they can and cannot get involved with. if they are seeking out tweets about fanart/smau/fanfic that are not tagged to them or the show, then that is a grown adult making that decision with the knowledge they have about their rights to do so. it’s not our job as fans to protect them. if someone tagged them in something and they choose to respond, even if i don’t agree with the initial tagging, then they are making that choice on their own. they really don’t have to respond/interact at all

this is once again a situation where there is no one side that is 100% right! both are right in many ways! it’s on us to be adults about it and go “should i really tag this person? would i show/ask these people this stuff if i ever met them in person? am i maybe behaving too personal with this total stranger” and “i think these people who work on the show are grown and can make their own decisions”

but also i feel like as a fandom, people need to learn that not everything needs to be blown up. you can just…. let things die down. (which i already know is silly to say since i’m literally making this post) i get everyone wants to throw their opinions around, and that’s their right on their own page, but like im so tired of people complaining about discourse all the time (this does not include actual issues in fandom like racism) but then keep subtweeting things that have no point to them except to prolong whatever! read what other people are saying, take a step back and process, learn, and then move on
