as a disabled person with countless dietary restrictions i have found immense solace in my jewish friends’ households, particularly during passover. for once i’m not surrounded by questions of “but why can’t you eat that”? and instead i’m asked “what could be a good alternative?”
#one of my friends always jokes that i’m accidentally keeping kosher because i can’t eat any red meat#or dairy and i can’t eat bread lol

since u said ur going back on a diet when ur home, how do u tend to diet? like do u stick to a calorie limit per day, or limit urself to certain foods, etc... i need to get on one too and i trust ur nutritional knowledge best lol
this is going to be a long answer because i don’t want to deprive you of any knowledge
yes i stick to a (minimum) calorie limit which was upped to 2100 right before i traveled, might increase it to 2350 when i’m home because the more calories i eat the better for muscle gain. there’s many things i don’t eat: processed carbs like white bread (get whole grain/whole wheat bread instead), includes processed pasta (you can just get whole grain, tastes the same), processed meats like turkey lunchmeat, bacon, etc (bacon isn’t sold in my muslim country anyways.) no sugar in my day because that is inflammation central & is horrendous for my blood sugar, natural sugar from fruits and such is fine though of course. for a bit i had one sugary snack a day because i was sick of restricting and it gave me pimples lmao like i’m done with having sugar on a consistent basis forever. now i have one cheat day a week where i eat all the sugar i want and that works just fine for me, sometimes i cheat twice because i happen to have plans. i also don’t eat dairy not because it’s bad for your health but because it gives me bad breakouts, i’ve been having to eat some cheese though because of my gut issues having a problem with my usual breakfast, now my breakfast has a ton of cheese. there might be more i don’t eat but i don’t remember for now.
now i’m gonna give you some advice, i don’t want to overwhelm you but i’m gonna give you a sense of what your diet should look like. this is also how my own diet looks. you should have a balanced diet with fruit, vegetables, proteins, whole grains, healthy fats & healthy carbohydrates in your day. you can incorporate fruits into your breakfast or into snacks throughout your day or even add fruit to a low carb meal on the side, but that’s just my dedicated ass. you could have a versatile salad in the day to get your vegetables in, have green smoothies, or simply eat your vegetables straight up in one sitting, like i usually do. get protein from chicken, beef, pork, tofu, dairy, plant proteins even. whole grains are easy to figure out, healthy fats can be from avocadoes, eggs, nuts, nut butters, olive oil, fish (fish gives you omega 3 fatty acids which are amazing for you). healthy carbs have already been mentioned, they’re fruits & whole grains, you can even have white rice & such. white rice isn’t actively nutritionally beneficial but it’s not bad for you either.
you said you need to go on a diet, i wonder what you mean? like do you need to lose weight or gain muscle/weight? cause i can’t tell you the amount of calories you should be getting in, i don’t know that. either way i gave you an idea of what a good diet should look like, i hope this helped. 💗

So I’m trying to increase my calories now so I can slowly start eating more I’m very scared to though. I medium/low restricted for an entire month with no cheat days so I’m scared about weight gain, guilt, and how my body will react to more calories. So I’m adding in extra in a way I almost wouldn’t notice lol. Every morning I have a cup of cereal and bread so instead of actually levelling the cereal I just took a big scoop and kept the overflow(realistically it’s around a cup and 1/3 cup estimated so that’s what I counted) but I’m not exactly sure how many extra cals are in it but I know it’s not much so I’m not feeling mega guilty about it and my stomach will get used to a little extra food each day. Adding a cut here because this post is long.
It sounds a bit dramatic to do this after only medium restricting but considering I have severe gastritis and never veered off my plan I’m just concerned it’s going to cause a flare up. But I’m so miserable starving I can’t do it this low anymore. I accidentally went dairy free for the whole month too so I’m trying to very slowly add dairy back in because I read eating dairy after not eating it for a while can mess up your system but I don’t want to be fully dairy free because I don’t want to be too restrictive and trigger a B/p.
It’s annoying to have to be so cautious about diet because of my Ehlers danlos syndrome I hate that it gives me such severe stomach problems but my ed makes it so much worse so I only have myself to blame for some of it.
This is also probably the worst time to be doing this since I start my period any day and it causes flare ups and weight fluctuations but I’m stupid so I’m doing it anyway. I just want to be able to maintain at a higher intake because what I’m doing now isn’t sustainable I don’t know how I managed it for so long. I hope this goes okay.

Foods I’m excited to eat over the holidays, and therefore, will eat! We should eat things we enjoy :))
- pozole (so warm, and hearty and filling!!)
- banana bread
- over-easy eggs
- scramble eggs
- soft boiled eggs
- honestly just eggs that aren’t boiled to death because that’s the only way the cafeteria here cooks them
- miso soup (all soups, I miss soups)
- lots and lots and lots of fruit!
- cobbler
- a ginormous salad with everything in it (grains, nuts, fruit etc etc)
- properly cooked beans and rice
- soymilk
- SMOOTHIES
- lefse made by my Aunty (without butter though, I simply can’t afford that. Maybe with some hummus or something)
- curry made the way I like it!
- dates and prunes and dried mango
- loads and loads of pickled vegetables and fermented foods
Holiday food I’m not especially excited to eat, and therefore WON’T eat, even if I feel pressured too -
- any prepackaged cookie/sweet/pie. It’s never as good as it looks to be.
- anything with excessive amounts of dairy. Might be yummy but it’s not worth the breakouts and joint inflammation
- crackers. Maybe it’s the autism. Saltines aren’t even that good. I’ll have some, but in moderation. Not an entire sleeve.
- the cheap, instant type of hot cocoa. Just kinda lame and not worth the calories.
- garlic bread. Just never worth it. I’ll enjoy the smell instead.
- oily vegetables. Just ew. Some people don’t know how to cook.
- takeout/fast food/mediocre restaurant food. I’m an adult now. I don’t have to finish something on my plate if I don’t like it. It’s okay to be a picky eater.
- calorie dense and mid “healthy” packaged snacks. Basically all the little vegan treats my mom always gets from Costco. Again, highly processed, not even that good, and I know how to bake. I can make my own stuff and make it better.
- sushi. The sushi where I live is just better. Why would I waste a meal and money on sushi in a landlocked state when I could get cheaper better stuff at home?
- mashed potatoes. I can make them without butter and with more flavor at home. I don’t trust other people’s mashed potatoes. Or like, any sort of mash/casserole/dish where you can’t distinguish the ingredients
- anything super duper sweet (read: not dark) chocolate/candies. How old am I? 8 years old? No. Eat like an adult.
- fried food. Just not a big fan tbh. My family doesn’t really cook fried food though so idk why I’m including this.
- gingerbread. Not to be a hater. I just don’t like it.
- the pumpkin bread I always bake over the holidays. It’s delicious but just too heavy, and it always makes me break out. I can always just use the spice mix and make oats with it instead :)
- overcooked pasta (my family always overcooks it for some reason) with red sauce (I don’t like red sauce)
I think that’s it? It’s weird, I’m so excited to eat food but honestly I’m a little surprised by the stuff I’m craving. I want pickled vegetables and soups and fruits, not junk, this year around. I think the fast fixed my gut microbiome lol.
I might still destroy a sleeve or two of saltines, or an entire bag of mini pretzels. Bland crunchy snacks have been my favorites lately :) some popcorn would go pretty hard too.
I’m curious to hear what type of foods other people like around the holidays.

I’ve been finding that it doesn’t actually matter what I eat and it’s more of how much of it I’m eating. Like I’m still relatively eating like shit, I’m just eating less instead of all of it lol and it’s working. Yeah, I probably should make more mindful choices (yay heart disease) but honestly smaller portions goes a long way.
This is so true! I always tell people that there are no such things as good foods and bad foods. You can eat McDonald’s everyday and still lose or maintain your weight. In fact this is a great video about that.
The thing about fat loss is that you have to be in a calorie deficit, that’s it. You can be in a calorie deficit eating cake. Or broccoli. Or chips. Or ANYTHING. It’s not about what you eat, it’s about how much you eat. Period.
But now here’s where it gets more in depth. For those wanting to lose weight, the goal is to be in a calorie deficit and to STAY in a calorie deficit. So the name of the game is find the best way for you personally to stay in a calorie deficit without losing your mind or feeling hungry all the time. For some people, that’s by eating what they love but just eating less of it. For some, that’s eating only chicken, rice, and broccoli. For some, that’s by cutting out dairy or bread or some other specific food.
For me personally, it’s making lower calorie/high protein versions of foods that I love and staying completely away from the real thing — not even a single taste — so that I don’t get hooked on it. Because I have an addictive personality and I KNOW I will instantly become addicted and will want it the next day. And then I’ll want this other type of food. And then more, and more, day after day until eventually I’m eating 4,000 calories every single day for months and have gained 20lbs. I haven’t had a “cheat meal” in 5 months — no fast food or sugary sweets or anything like that, and it’s the only thing that has ever worked for me this long because with what I’m eating everything feels like a cheat meal. I LOVE sweets, so I just make my own sugar free versions that taste amazing but don’t have a ton of sugar in them. But I know that the second I allow myself to have something like a real pizza, it’ll undo all of those habits I’ve built because I’ll remember what it tastes like and then the pita bread pizzas I make won’t taste nearly as good and I won’t be satisfied. Or if I have Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, the Halo Top I buy won’t taste incredible like it does to me now and I won’t want to get it anymore and will instead get the B&J ice cream.
Will I ever have “real” junk food again? I have no idea. Maybe, maybe not. I know I at least won’t in the near future because I don’t want to. To some people that seems way too extreme. People who I personally know say things to me like “You can’t just NOT have fast food ever again for the rest of your life!” …but why not? If this is working for me and I’m happy and satisfied, then why do I need to eat those things that I’ll become addicted to again and will mess up my progress?
The problem with the health industry and with a lot of these fitness influencers is that everyone thinks they have the right answer because something worked for them. But we’re all different, and so different things are going to work for different people. For you, it’s eating the same foods you love but just less of it. And that’s awesome! But some people will tell you that’s wrong, and it’s so frustrating because that’s so harmful when you’ve found a solution and people who claim to be professionals convince you to do something else that won’t work for you. It’s like just let people do some trial and error and find what works for THEM!
Anyways, sorry about that rant lol. I have a lot of feelings on this, as you can see 😂

if you dont mind me asking, how did you get into dumpster diving/how do you make sure its safe? (both from a cleanliness and hypodermic needles standpoint and from a legality standpoint)
oh yeah sure! full disclosure though i haven’t actually been doing it for long at all so i’m no like, authority or anything. i got almost all my like Safety Measures TM from this person on tiktok who’s been doing it for a year or so, but she’s based in the US so some practical differences exist. i hate food waste and love free/cheap food and i was living in a student co-op over the summer and one of my flatmates there was going to that store specifically for it and i saw the stuff he was coming back with so i was like Yo wtf
anyway in terms of food safety, i only take stuff that’s either 1. cold (as in fridge cold) or 2. semi shelf stable, and never stuff like dairy or seafood (or meat). also important to make sure the packaging is intact and clean. with my bakery bread haul all of the bakery bread was inside of a separate clean clear bag and then individually wrapped inside again, but if they’d just been loose in there only wrapped in the bakery paper wrap i wouldn’t have taken them. on top of that personally i’ve been cooking all the produce i got (cherry tomatoes, blueberries) that has like breathing holes before eating just to be sure, even though i only take them if they’re on top of the pile (so not from the depths of the bin lol) and clean. if there’s several whole boxes of something with seemingly nothing wrong with it it’s also always worth it to check food recalls in your area.
i HAVE taken expired food that was expired by a few days but i can’t like, recommend that bc it is an additional risk. however i am weak against entire sealed boxes full of food that turned out to be fine in the end so that’s my hubris etc. if you do do that just make sure to use your nose and eyes and preferably ONLY take stuff where you CAN use your eyes and nose to at least pretty well determine if something is safe. for example i took a box of itsu noodle soup, which is an instant meal kit that comes with precooked rice noodles, soup base, veggies, and dumplings. i tossed the dumplings but the veggies and the noodles were fine so i just used those to make a stir fry SPECIFICALLY to get it really hot for a prolonged period of time in case the dumplings had gone off really badly and spread bacteria to the noodles.
it’s legal in the US and afaik in scotland as well, as long as you’re not entering a no trespassing area. the places i go don’t have any gates etc and you can get onto the loading dock/trash area without jumping through any hoops or entering any no customers allowed areas bc it’s just right there.
i’ve never seen hypodermic needles or anything like that, in scotland grocery stores etc have a food waste bin (or usually several, lol waitrose has six) and a general compactable (landfill) waste bin and i only look at the food waste ones. since they’re off of the street people who might be disposing of needles or whatever are unlikely to choose to walk off the road with residential dumpsters along it and into the store parking lot, but i also don’t really dig around and use a flashlight so i can see what i’m about to touch. the person whose videos i’ve watched has like a grabbing stick and that seems like a good investment bc i am deathly afraid of touching the sides of the bin lol. wearing gloves can also be a good idea

Been a hot minute since I did one of these. A good friend of mine gave me a suggestion on my discord:
So yeah this required a lot of research because I only eat like 3 things lol. Obligatory crack warning.
Tornado of Terror: Ice cream because A: it’s good practice for her esper powers to control a semi-liquidous substance and B: her constant rage has actually raised her default body temperature an additional ten degrees, so eating ice cream is a good way to cool off.
Silverfang: Oatmeal raisin cookies because he’s an old fuck. He likes chewy things because his teeth are held together by sheer force of will but also indulges in that extra crunch of the oatmeal to remind everyone in the old folk’s home just who the fuck they’re messing with.
Atomic Samurai: Any dessert-flavored cocktail that is made up of around 90% alcohol and 5% violence.
Child Emperor: Kid eats sweets for breakfast lunch and dinner, dessert to him would probably be a head of broccoli drizzled with a light yet flavorful dressing. Either that or milkshakes, because I get the feeling he doesn’t get to enjoy them too often... and of course they remind him of the good times with Zombieman.
Metal Knight: Only eats pre-packaged nutrient bricks and has not tasted anything sweet nor enjoyed a food morsel in at least 17 years.
King: I headcanon King as a huge momma’s boy who doesn’t get to eat a lot of homemade food because he fucking sucks at cooking and makes enough money to eat out all the time anyway, so his favorite dessert would probably be every and any home-cooked treat his mom makes for him.
Zombieman: I’ll be honest, I thought this dude hated sweet things but after reading that manga extra of him drinking sugar with a side of coffee, my opinion has switched. His favorite dessert would probably be something extremely decadent and sweet, like one of those 1000-calorie Dairy Queen sundae-shakes jam packed with chocolate and cookie crumbs. Or an entire fucking lava cake because this dude’s metabolism is faster than the speed of light and he’d probably stomach something like that just to see if he can, since apparently he’s all about breaking his own limiters. A friend of mine once ate three-dozen pot brownies in one sitting while speedrunning Mario 64 and I think Zombieman would be able to do that without the aid of the munchies. I know Zman internally insulted Pig God one time for well, eating like a pig but give the dude some alone time and an all you can eat buffet of sweets and he’d find himself in the same situation.
Drive Knight: Does not have a favorite food in general due to this motherfucker not installing tastebuds on account of them not being necessary to commit all degrees of murder.
Pig God: Oh my god. More like what isn’t this dude’s favorite dessert? Pig God has lost the ability to dislike anything he puts in his mouth because eating has pretty much become his main source of income, so it’s safe to say that if he can swallow it, it’s his favorite food. That includes desserts, but I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t partial to pudding. Just pudding. Bread pudding, chocolate pudding, strawberry pudding. Pudding.
Superalloy Darkshine: I’ve said this before but my boy Darkshine only eats the most obnoxiously healthy foods out there, sometimes over health-ifying those foods himself in his kitchen/protein meth lab. His favorite dessert would probably be one of those ancient bread seed logs and only because he’s allowed to put .2 ounces of stevia in it. Either that or literally just any fruit ever.
Watchdog Man: Those pumpkin-flavored dog treats because my man gets paid 2 cents an hour at the Hero Association and the poor mf in charge of payroll has forgotten he exists so he’s grown accustomed to eating only the dog-related foods people leave to him as offerings on his weird pedestal thing in City Q.
Flashy Flash: Doesn’t really have an affinity for sweet things on account of how fucking awful life in the Ninja Village was. He never got the opportunity to develop a sweet tooth because of all the basic ass food he’d be eating. Almost all desserts listed here would give him a heart attack, like making a Victorian era child drink McDonald’s sprite. It will not sit right with his spirit. His favorite dessert would he any vaguely sweet fruit with wine, or a coffee that is 90% creamer.
Genos: Something in my spirit is telling me he’d enjoy anything strawberry-related, although Saitama doesn’t like them. This leads to them falling out while a shortcake bakes in the background. Im kidding, obviously. But seeing as how ONE has a very “go stupid aaaaaaaa” attitude towards writing, it would be a very tame end to their relationship (assuming there’s gonna be an end) compared to all the other shitdick stuff happening in this series. Zombieman’s ass has been out for like 8 chapters, you can’t tell me shit.
Metal Bat: Kiddo snorts protein powder for breakfast, probably. He’s ripped as hell and his diet reflects that sorta, with a hint of seventeen year-old craziness thrown in there. Bitch eats like a violent stoner sometimes because he knows his metabolism can handle it and he won’t die from food poisoning nor food coma. However, his favorite dessert would be creme brûlée because it’s the only food you’re required to beat the shit out of before eating, and we all know he loves bonking stuff.
Tanktop Master: Over health-ifys shit like Darkshine, just to a lesser degree. However I also HC him as a huge momma’s boy, and if said mother is supportive in his endeavors to become the world’s swolest man, she’d definitely make him something both sweet and healthy. However, I’d doubt he care about slipping up on his diet every once and a while. He’d probably enjoy a soft serve here and there.
Puri-Puri Prisoner: his palate is very limited on account of being in literal prison. However, he doesn’t really hate it there for some reason, and I’ve even stated in a previous hc that he sometimes gets specialized meals in the cafeteria due to his status as a hero. His favorite dessert would probably be whatever chocolate-flavored sweet brick they can shit out. Like, motherfuckers get really creative with their ingredients while locked up and there’s a bomb ass recipe for chocolate cake floating around that I’ve tried and can confirm it’s 10/10 not bad. I’m getting off-topic. His favorite dessert is whatever asshole he’ll be eating out of that night.
Saitama: Even though he’s poorer than.... fuck, I don’t know. He’s broke but he still indulges in the prestige shit here and there. He’s got a massive sweet tooth even though he’s ripped as hell, hence why he eats so much fruit because it’s the only sweet thing he can afford to ingest without losing his gains. His favorite dessert would be anything banana-related, but nothing as decadent as say, dark chocolate. Probably banana foster waffles. I don’t know why that popped into my head, I just know Saitama would like them.
Garou: motherfucker could shit on a rock with sprinkles on it and call it dessert. His favorite, though? Sweet, sweet victory. And candy bars.

between the aisles [kim mingyu]
“wherein you discover your feelings for your best friend in between the grocery aisles.”
PAIRING | kim mingyu x reader GENRE | best friends! au, fluff, comedy WARNING | language lol WORD COUNT | 2k
a/n: dedicated to @aborivin happy happy birthday, annie!! <3 this ended up longer than i anticipated, but hope i managed to bring your grocery gyu fantasies to reality LMAO
it was easy to weigh whether your decisions were right or wrong. it was right if you benefit from it, wrong if you did not. but what if you both gained and lost something along the way?
“y/n, look! this carrot has arms!”
that very voice had you sighing, questioning whether or not you had made the right decision today. whether or not you should have given in to his annoyingly endearing pout, his whiny, violence-inducing voice, or the overall kicked puppy look that he was bearing. in the end, you made the decision—
“gyu, put that down! oh my god— back on the pile, not in the cart!”
—the decision to bring kim mingyu, your irritating best friend whom you both want to punch and adore, grocery shopping with you.
“you’re so evil,” he accused, bringing the poor carrot to his chest, hugging it tightly in a protective hold as if you’d grab it from him. “don’t you have a heart? are you just gonna abandon this little guy?”
you frowned. “but i already bought vegetables last time! i showed you my list earlier and it didn’t involve vegetables, mingyu,” you reasoned, gesturing at your shopping cart to emphasize your point. it was partially filled with meat, bread, and everything else except for the produce that mingyu desperately wanted for whatever reason. he seemed adamant to keep it, the little, deformed orange root, but from your stern glare, he returned it back to the pile, although with a frown that he didn’t even bother to mask
“what’s one more?” mingyu grumbled in a soft voice before you two trucked further into the aisle. “he deserves a home too, you know.”
“his home is inside your belly, mingyu.”
he gasped. loudly. very loudly. thank god the grocery store was practically empty. “you take that back!”
from the sudden noise mingyu erupted, you instinctively moved forward to press your palms over his mouth, silencing him. yes, there were barely any customers around, but the employees were still around. you didn’t want to risk getting kicked out thanks to your best friend’s ineptitude to auditory appropriateness. his eyes were wide, staring at you in alarm and you could only harden your gaze. when he seemed to finally get the idea of you wanting him to shut the fuck up, you removed your hands, and he released a long huff of breath.
“okay—” you sighed, brushing your fingers through your hair before returning his curious glances. “how much do you want the fucking carrot?”
mingyu’s face lit up, his sharp canines bearing from the wideness of his grin, and you weren’t able to prevent a smile of your own from forming. one might think he won the lottery— not a mutated alien carrot that he had questionably gotten attached to.
“he is my son, y/n,” he proclaimed. “i’m not leaving without my son.”
it sometimes irked you how one look from him could immediately have you agreeing. you were going to monopolize his closet for this, dear god.
“go,” you sighed, and you didn’t expect him to smile even wider. “before i change my mind. i’m paying for this, remember?”
“oh my god, i love you,” the words slipped past his breath quickly. a little too quickly. he hugged you quickly, too. and the lingering feeling of his fleeting arms around you tingled over your skin belatedly when he had finally left and ran away to pick up his apparent son. he wasn’t there, but you were smiling at him, smiling at his back as he ran at to the end of the aisle, smiling when he shot back at you, raising the carrot in his hands to show it off, smiling when he finally returned to his spot before you.
it was easy to weigh whether your decisions were right or wrong. and right now, you've made the right decision. the stupid smile on your face says it all.
“y/n! thank you, thank you,” mingyu sang, dancing a little bit before gingerly placing the carrot on top of a cereal box inside the cart. “what’s next on the list?”
“oh, so now you care about my list?” you raised at arm to lightly smack him on the head. “ramen. don’t even say anything about preservatives, you wannabe food connoisseur. you’ve terrorized my grocery experience enough already.”
mingyu laughed, gently patting the spot on his hair where you hit him earlier, and he grinned at you. “aye aye, captain.”
the produce aisle and the instant food aisle were at the opposite ends of the grocery store spectrum— meaning that the distance needed to be covered was a bit too far for your liking. mingyu volunteered to push the shopping cart in your stead, humming along to the lyricless music blaring through the store’s speakers. he was walking at a pace far too slow for your liking, even with his long ass legs, causing you to sigh, stop, and look at him in exasperation.
“what’s wrong?” mingyu raised a brow, against the cart handles with his arms crossed.
“can’t you move a little faster? at this rate your son will start rotting before we even get to pay for him at the cash register.”
“well, we definitely won’t make it there if we stop moving,”
god you wanted to punch him. something about that stupid and smug look on his face just looked an exclusive invitation for your fist. mingyu continued strolling past you, eyeing the vast selection of milk inside the lines of freezers. still feeling bitter by your lack of a rebuttal, you resorted to physical tactics— shoving him forward as you passed by, which caused the poor guy to stumble and let out a shriek.
“again,” he breathed, barely hanging onto his life by clinging onto the freezer door handle. “you’re so evil.”
it was a surprise that it didn’t swing open and insinuated a cartoned dairy avalanche onto the male. you stuck your tongue out at him, stealing the cart away from him briskly walking away, not before shooting back a smug grin of your own. “if only you walked a little faster, gyu.”
you already passed another isle but he didn’t seem to be running after you, and it stirred your gut into unease. where the hell was he? the last thing you wanted to do today was file a missing child case. you thought of turning around, hoping that you’d spot him sneaking behind your back once you did. but the moment you stopped your movements to look behind, you felt like you were being carried into the air.
“what the fuckin— oh my god. put me down, you dumbass!”
you heard him giggle. you couldn’t see his face because the motherfucker was carrying you like a sack of potatoes right now, but you could imagine the shit eating expression he was wearing on his face right now. there was movement that you could feel— him leaning forward as well as the shuffling of contents inside your cart, and you could only ask yourself what in the world was he planning.
“there. perfect,” you were about to retort, scold him, and maybe even insert a little bit of profanities in between, but all that escaped from your lips was a high pitched scream because mingyu finally put you down, but the thing is—
he placed you inside the shopping cart.
the damned shopping cart. you couldn’t even fit inside as your legs were practically squeezing against your chest, so you had to have them dangling them out of the cart’s walls just so you can breathe.
“mingyu, what the fuck, i’m not for sale,” you were appalled, staring up at him wide-eyed and he was only grinning at you like a maniac.
“you wanted me to move faster, right?”
“well, yes, but— oh my fucking god, mingyu—!”
he was crazy. you had managed to conclude that amidst your frazzled state of mind because you were literally being steered around the grocery store’s aisles at the speed twenty-fucking-three miles per hour. your knuckles were getting cut off from blood by gripping onto the sides of the cart too tightly, and you couldn’t even think because all you could hear was wheels screeching against the slippery tiles juxtaposed with the sound of mingyu’s laughter.
“do you want me to go even faster?”
“i want you to trip over your own legs, you fucking maniac. what if we get kicked out?!”
“they can’t kick us out if they can’t catch us!”
you shot your head up to look at him, breathless from the sudden rush of adrenaline but even more so when you caught a glimpse of his widely smiling face. he stared down at you, laughing, hair flying against the wind, and the fluorescent lights of the store's ceiling raining on his golden skin made it seem like he was glowing. you weren’t sure if it was the sudden rush, or if you were also going crazy but—
had he always looked this radiant?
the cart stopped, knocking the air from your lungs, and you were finally snapped out of your dumbstruck daze. or so you thought, because the moment your eyes landed on your best friend once more— hair a mess, chest heaving, and an intoxicated smile on his face, you were deterred back into the previous screaming if your nerves.
what the fuck?
“okay, ramen,” he breathed out, probing the shelves filled with instant noodles to pick out your favorite ones. you only stared at him wordlessly. staring at the way his brows furrowed in concentration as he examined the selection, staring at the way his lips were formed in a slight pout, staring at the way he picked out a handful of the goods, until his gaze resigned back to yours with an inquisitive air. “do you want me to get you out of there or…?”
“o—oh yeah i can get out by myself, thanks,” you were still slightly out of it (well, very out of it), so it was a bit of a task to get yourself out of the tiny shopping cart. you were struggling, that you acknowledge, and it seems like mingyu did as well because you heard him release a chuckle, returning the stacks of ramen onto the shelves before coming to your rescue.
“there you go,” he hummed, pulling out of your predicament, and your feet were finally back on the ground “i was afraid you’d kill my son out of your carelessness.”
you smacked him, to which he let out a whine. “i might actually do after the whole stunt you pulled earlier.”
“but it was fun, right?”
you were about to bite back, opening your mouth to split another snarky comment, but you were only left speechless once you saw the eagerness from his upturned lips, the crinkling of his eyes, and you couldn’t help but mirror his gleam
“yeah…it was pretty fun.”
mingyu hummed in satisfaction, returning to his previous agenda of picking out the last item on your list. “let’s finish up this trip,” he said, throwing in a number of the noodles into your cart before grabbing onto the handles, ready to move on to your next destination “where off to next?”
it was easy to weigh whether your decisions were right or wrong, and bringing your best friend along to your grocery trip was definitely both a right and wrong decision on your part. you lost a few screws in your head, maybe, as well as a few chunks of your patience. though, you definitely gained something else in between the aisles.
what that was will be left unsaid, for now.
a fond smile blossomed on your face, shaking your head before moving ahead of mingyu who started to trail behind you shortly after. he waited for you to speak, earnest in his gaze, and you nudged your head towards the orange carrot, resting peacefully inside the shopping cart.
“let’s go pay for your son now, yeah?”

Hi, there! These last few days have been pretty chaotic and stressful for just about everyone around these parts, so I was wondering if maybe you could share any fun headcanons you might have about Emma or Nealfire? <3 Or even any AU ideas for the two of them? :0
Hi there!!! Thank you so much for this ask (these things excite me like crazy and they’re even better when they’re SwanFire-related!)! Things have been pretty stressful but I for one am feeling better about things - at least right now anyway. Anyhoo, I can’t wait to answer and share these!! You might wanna sit down though... it’s gonna be quite the list. *drags my notebook out from under my bed* Literally. Shall we get started? *cracks knuckles* Let’s go!
SwanFire Headcanons
SwanFire has (have? It’s late... I’m having grammar brainfades😖Or it was when I started this; now I’m too lazy to proofread. Bear with me) three children after Henry. All girls: Ivy, Ella, and Ruth (Ruthie).
Emma gets cold easily, resulting in her either taking a heating pad to bed with her, or letting one of her children sleep in her bed with her when Neal is out of town.
Baelfire/Neal reads out loud to his kids every night before they go to bed.
Though not as avid a reader as Neal, Emma still enjoys reading, her favorite genre being dark thrillers (Karin Slaughter, hello hello). Sometimes, though she doesn’t like to admit it, if the plot is particularly intense, she’s left a little spooked, resulting in her snuggling up closer to Neal after he turns out the light. (Cute, I KNOW!!)
Emma has a hard time relating to and comforting her second child, Ivy, because of their very different personalities.
They always let their children name their pets, even if the names are borderline preposterous.
Neal is a morning person while Emma is not (although she will be if she has to be); both are also night owls when they want to be...🙊
Neal is a fairly good cook (Emma? Not so much) and does most of the cooking (happily I might add). Sometimes, with the best intentions, Emma will try her hand at making something special and gets really mad and frustrated with herself for messing it up. (Baelfire will eat it anyway though, with a stupid smile on his face - that was inspired by one of LilRedSoupBowl’s fanfics but🤫)
*NSFW WARNING* Though it’s pretty much even, Emma initiates many of their ‘nights of passion’🙈 (she’s so bad...)
*MIST HAVEN* Baelfire is gone a lot because of the duties required of the Mist Haven Army which results in his and Emma’s fair share of nasty disputes (they fight as hard as they love) *STORYBROOKE and a nod to him and Emma being the only ones who were able to leave town* He’s out of town a lot because of having to go to different estate auctions (at least that’s what my dad told me...? I don’t know if that’s accurate or not) to find more antiques for his father’s pawn shop. In both worlds/realities, Emma just ‘survives’ while he’s gone. (A nod to my favorite mom/lifestyle blogger and real life OTP, Janene and Aaron Crossley)
Neal is very clumsy (in both worlds/realities), resulting in some awkward and laughable situations
Emma really enjoys soaking in a bath and it’s one of her main means of relaxing and de-stressing. While Baelfire’s main mean of relaxing and de-stressing is drawing and sketching
Emma hates beets and turnips with a burning passion and refuses to eat them. Even the smell of them cooking makes her want to gag.
Baelfire detests goats with a burning passion - so does Charming and they could literally rant about it all day long. Emma and Snow think it’s rather hilarious .
Emma has a pronounced scar just above her left breast from a wound she received when she was four years old. Regina tried (rather unsuccessfully) to wipe out the Charming line. She says she remembers the attack like it was yesterday.
*This is more a Mist Haven one* Bae and Emma named their second child Ivy because she was born a month before Christmas and ivy was one of the things they used to decorate for Christmas back then. (My best friend LOVES that one, if anyone cares, lol) Plus, I personally think ‘Princess Ivy of Mist Haven flows rather nicely.
SwanFire loves Christmas and always decorates for it on the first Saturday of November. Emma hates untangling they lights though and happily leaves all that frustrating stuff to Neal.
Every time Emma was pregnant Baelfire hoped for and insisted the baby was a girl (hey! He was right 3 outta 4 times - not a bad track record).
Neal is a fan of anything pumpkin. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin ice cream (that’s a thing, by the way. A Byrne Dairy exclusive), you name it. If it has pumpkin in it, he’ll eat it. Emma thinks it’s kinda adorable.
*Trigger warning: miscarriage* Emma suffered two miscarriages within months of each other (the first one at 10 weeks, the second one at 16 weeks😭) between Ella and Ruthie🥺 which resulted in her going into a deep and dark depression. (I might make this one into a fic so I’m gonna keep it vague because of !SPOILERS!)
Emma’s a big fan of the show ‘Castle’ and hardcore ships Caskett (Castle fans!! Where you at???). Neal claims he could take or leave the show but he sure answers real quick when Emma leaves the room for a second and asks, “What did I miss?” He’s also super quick to laugh at the funny banters between Ryan and Esposito.
Their kids are tucked into bed by 8:30 pm every night except Friday, when they get to stay up till a big whopping 9:00 pm (LOL! So not a inspired by my own childhood)
Emma’s favorite movies are ‘Titanic’, ‘The Notebook’, and ‘A Walk to Remember’ and although she loves them, she also hates them because they make her cry every single time and she HATES to cry. Bonus: Every time she watches them with Neal she looks up to see him crying too... (It’s so cute when men cry over sad romance movies😍😭)
*TRIGGER WARNING: Menstruation* Emma’s time of the month is really unpleasant for her during her first three days - she’s a heavy bleeder and gets really bad cramps and back pain and won’t take Advil for it because all that does is make them come back with a vengeance the next morning. She’ll find relief in curling up on the couch in the fetal position with a heating pad pressed against her lower belly. Sometimes that’s the sight that Baelfire will come home to and when he sees that, he knows to kinda give her space. He’ll ask her if she needs anything but her answer is usually peace and quiet. (“Take the kids and just LET ME TAKE A FREAKING NAP!”)
That’s about all I can think of for now - I have a few others too but I’m not 100% comfortable sharing those on here yet (they’re a little NSFW) but perhaps someday🤗 Thank you so much for this ask, it was really fun and I hope you (and everyone else who sees this) enjoys them!
#SwanFire#Emma Swan#Neal Cassidy#Baelfire#my headcanons#like how do I even tag this though?#oh and I gotta give my sister some credit over this because most of these we came up with together over the last 2 and half years#ugh!!! is it wrong to say that your own headcanons are so cute?

Have you ever shared a shower or bath with someone as an adult? I did it a couple of times with a past girlfriend, but I’m honestly not a fan of it unless I’m somewhere with a serious lack of bathrooms and it’s the only choice available. I like my space when I get myself all cleaned up lol.
What kind of pizza toppings do you like? Different kinds of cheeses do it for me, really. If I absolutely have to pick toppings, I do like bacon, bell peppers, barbecue chicken, or onions on my pizza.
When did you first take a shot of alcohol? I have no idea, actually. Maybe 20? 21? I never noted the year down. I don’t even know the first shot I ever took...if I had to guess, it was probably tequila.
Did you babysit for money when you were in middle school? No. I babysat because I was the eldest daughter and granddaughter in an Asian household, haha.
Who is your favorite band? How long have they been? Paramore; 17 years, have loved them for 14.
Has the last person you kissed ever been to your house? Many times. She used to be a welcome guest.
Have you ever been to a spa? I don’t think I’ve ever entered one, no. There’s been no reason to in the past.
When talking on the phone, do you place it against your left or right ear? Right. I don’t remember ever placing it on my left, come to think of it.
What’s your favourite Lunchables meal? Idk, I’ve never had them. American thing, I’m guessing.
Do you like Bob Marley? I don’t hold an opinion on him; I’ve never tried listening to his music.
Have you ever eaten at Golden Corral? Nope, I don’t know what that is, either.
Do you sit and eat dinner at the same table with your family? Yes, we have dinner together every night. We’ve been doing it since the start of the pandemic; and, with that, since my dad has had to stay at home since he can’t report to work anyway considering the situation. I imagine we’d be back to eating separately once he can report back to his job.
Are you listening to any music right now? If so, what are you listening to? Yeah, I’m listening to Map of the Soul: 7 and UGH! just started playing. This is such a good FUCKING album it’s absolutely insane how good it is. Whatever spirit possessed BTS throughout 2019 to produce an album this unbelievable wasn’t playing.
Who was the last person to make you genuinely smile? Hobi, since I rewatched the Run BTS segment where he called Conan O’Brien Curtain.’
Is there something you want to say to someone but can’t/won’t? No.
Do you like men who have a sensitive side? I think it’s nice when anyone has a sensitive side and isn’t ashamed to be in touch and expressive with their emotions. Doesn’t have to apply to just guys.
Have you ever tried to get someone into a certain band/artist? I don’t do that with any of my interests because I don’t want to potentially irritate or bore someone, or to potentially face the disappointment I’d feel when they don’t end up being enthusiastic about what I’m into. I’m totally okay with my interests just being My Thing, no need to drag other people into them.
Have you ever carved you and someone else’s initials into a tree? Nopes.
Do you like Dairy Queen? Just some items, like their Oreo Frappe or whatever it’s called. I’m not a big fan of ice cream cakes and I’ve never really explored their Blizzards.
Is there anyone you know with an amazing personal success story? Andi.
Is there a song in a different language that you can sing? Well Filipino is my first language rather than English, so yes.
How do you feel about bands that use pyrotechnics in live concerts? I’ve never experienced this other than One Direction using fireworks at the end of their concert here (and they weren’t launched from the stage either, but somewhere backstage), so I don’t really know what to feel about this other than they should just make sure they’re following safety protocols and standards to avoid mishaps.
Ever fallen down a hole? I don’t think so.
Do you like bananas? Not so much, but I don’t passionately hate it as much as I do other fruits. I do like some dishes that incorporate banana, like banana bread and banoffee pie. Recently I discovered Korean banana milk and it ended up tasting pretty good!
How long do you normally spend in the shower? Not even 10 minutes, usually. I've never understood how people can take such long showers. < Yeah, pretty much on the same page. The only times I take a while is if I feel like shaving, but otherwise I shower quickly. Maybe around 4–7 minutes at most.
Have you ever been a featured member on any website? I don’t think that ever happened, at least when having featured members was still a thing.
Have you ever had any weird pets? Nope.
Are you currently talking to/texting/instant messaging anyone? I am not. Though I know I have unread messages from Andi...I just don’t feel like checking them right now.
Have you ever experienced insomnia? Only when I was a teenager. It’s been a while since I’ve faced any trouble in trying to fall asleep.
Do you like egg nog? I’ve never had a chance to try it but it sounds delicious, and I would definitely take a sip the first opportunity I get.
Would you ever wear Converse with a prom/formal dress? I don’t see why I would have to but if it’s just for funsies, it sounds pretty harmless so yeah, I would.
Do you prefer hot chocolate with or without marshmallows? Withoooooooooout. I’ve never understood marshmallows.
How many different people of the opposite sex have you cried over? In a romantic sense, none. But I’ve cried for other reasons, like when I mourned over my grandpa and Nacho.
Would you rather be a surgeon or mortician? Surgeon, since there’s a tiny part in me that had always wanted to take up med school.
Would rather be a musician or a painter? Painter, if anything. I’m not creative by any means, but I feel like I’d enjoy a lot more freedom with painting.
Would you rather write your own book or make your own movie? [continued from last night] Write my own book I suppose, but I could only work with non-fiction. I’d embarass myself if I had to write something not based off of real life.
At home, do you have a trampoline? No. But this reminds me of when we’d go to Rita’s place to have meetings whenever we couldn’t hold them in school. She’s the richest one out of all of us, lives in a very old money village, big-ass house, big-ass kitchen, big-ass receiving areas (plural)...and they also have a nice trampoline in their big-ass yard. We always used to horse around in there as soon as we were done with our meetings.
When you are about to go to bed, do you put on some sort of noise? I used to put on a YouTube video that would entertain me enough to feel relaxed and eventually sleepy, but I haven’t done that in the last few weeks. These days I usually look for a fanfic to get absorbed in, then I read until my eyes start feeling heavy.
What is your favorite Christmas movie? Love Actually or It’s A Wonderful Life.
And what about your favorite Christmas song? It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas makes me feel festive and fuzzy.
What is your ultimate favorite stocking stuffer? My family doesn’t really keep up with this tradition. I remember how our grandparents would fix up stockings for us when we were much younger, but they were usually filled with candy.
After Halloween, do you sort out all of your candy into little piles? I never collected candy for Halloween.
When you listen to music with headphones, do you keep the volume low enough to hear surrounding noise faintly, or do you blast it? Depends. The rare times I’m working and do feel like putting headphones on, the volume has to be just decent enough so I can still focus. If I’m not doing anything else or at least doing something that doesn’t involve too much ~brain activity~, I like my music very loud.
What did you have for breakfast this morning? It doesn’t really count as breakfast but I’m currently finishing off the remaining two pieces of McNuggets I got last night. 10 pieces is apparently too many for my appetite, haha.
What’s the largest animal you’ve ever had as a pet? Cooper has probably been the biggest and heaviest so far.
Do you own any kind of helmet? We have a bike helmet here at home, but it’s not exclusively mine.
Out of everything currently in your refrigerator, what food or drink is your favorite? I don’t memorize the fridge so I can’t tell you my favorite food that’s currently in it; as for drink, I just stick to cold water.
What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had? Sprained ankle after I tripped at one of the parking lots in school.
Do you like the taste of cough syrup? I’ve never had it.
What is something you like to have conversations about? People with experiences vastly different from mine, because it lets me explore different perspectives. It’s why I always look forward to family reunions with one of my uncles - who’s a foreigner, from a very different country - since he’s able to share a lot of fun and reflective stories about his life and stuff he did in his youth, stuff I never got to experience and live through.
What all is in the trunk of your car? The trunk used to be my trash can lmao, back when I was still driving everyday. My mom has since cleared it out since the beginning of the pandemic; I believe only a laptop bag is sitting there now.
Do you ever put fruit on your cereal? No. I don’t even eat either.
Is your heat or air conditioning currently on? My electric fan is. I don’t turn on the aircon until the evening.
Have you ever fallen off of a horse? Nopes.
Which do you value more, your appearance or your intelligence? Both are important to me.
When was the last time you drove something other than a car or truck? I don’t remember. I’ve only ever driven cars.
Were your grandparents present when you were born? Neither set wasn’t in any of the photos from my birth, so I don’t think so...? My maternal grandparents definitely wouldn’t have been present, since my parents had been living in Manila then.
If you drink/smoke, how often do you do these things? I vape...pretty much all day. I’m doing it while taking this survey. As for drink, I would say 1-2 times a month. Usually after a particularly grueling shift.
What do you think of fast food? I love it. Unabashedly. I just don’t have them a lot because I don’t find it filling and the quality is obviously lower; but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like the way fast food tastes.
What website do you spend the most time on and why? Google Suite, if it counts. I work 5 days a week; it’s pretty much an extension of me at this point.
What’s the most amount of time you’ve spent online? Is this usual for you? All day. I’m always using the internet to do things. I used to be embarrassed of it, but these days I feel like having a connection is virtually an essential.
When it comes to travel, what kinds of places intrigue you most? Museums, historical sites, cultural sites, and spots where they show you how they do practices native to the place. I’ve always been about immersing myself in the cultures of the places I visit.
What is the farthest you’ve walked in one day and what made you do it? I remember having to walk for a very very very VERY long time when we were in Bali - my family wanted to explore more of the city - and the weather wasn’t cooperative at all, so I ended up feeling super cranky. I remember also walking around a lot in Shanghai, but that was a slightly better experience since the city was incredibly lively and there were a lot of things to see and stop at; not to mention the weather was also kinda pleasant. The cold was biting but I would always rather be too cold than walk around with sweat-soaked clothes.
What is something important that’s often on your mind lately? Our financial situation what with Covid affecting both my parents’ jobs. We get by enough for me not to worry too much, but I also hope my dad can get called back to his ship soon just so I can finally exhale with relief.
What about something unimportant, but you can’t stop thinking about it? My workplace recently introduced this workout challenge thingy for the month of May that we’re invited to join to encourage us to get fit and healthy. I get notifications whenever someone’s able to exercise for the day and it makes me feel super pressured hahahaha. Since I don’t wanna be known as a killjoy co-worker I know I’ll have to take part in it, which I will start on later.
Do you like oatmeal? If so, what kinds of things do you like in it? No. Back in elementary my grandma made me eat oatmeal every day for breakfast before heading to school, so I don’t ever want to have another bowl of it.
What was going on the last time you felt nostalgic? My family and I were having a conversation during dinner last night and for some reason it eventually veered towards mine and my sister’s experiences from our first school and how we managed to get up at 5 AM everyday, have classes from 7 AM–4 PM, then get home from anywhere between 5–6 PM for 14 years straight. How tf did we do that and never complain???
How much attention do you pay to the movements of the stars and planets, and do you believe they influence anything? None.
What is the most difficult or involved video game you’ve ever played? While I love watching playthroughs, I am not skilled at video games at all and in most video games I’ve played I never made it past the first mission, unless I was playing a Nintendo game that’s already marketed for kids in the first place lol.
Which accent do you find most sexy, alluring or appealing? There’s a certain British accent I find very pleasant to listen to, but since I know there are a lot of variations I’m just not sure which one it is. I guess an accurate point of reference would be Hugh Grant’s or Florence Pugh’s accent.
Which accent do you find most annoying, disturbing, or bothersome? None of them.
Can you cry on cue? Is it any kind of useful? Nope.
Does it take you a while to actually get jokes? Sometimes.
Can you wear socks to bed or does it annoy you? I don’t really like the feeling of socks, so no. I find them a bit itchy, and too tight.
Have you ever bleached your hair? Never done it before.
Do you like jelly beans? Erm, it would depend on the flavor, I guess. But they aren’t so much my snack of choice. The texture is a bit weird.
Do you have trouble sleeping when it’s storming? Not at all, I feel a lot cozier when it’s raining hard.
Who was the last person you know that graduated? (high school or college) Sofie posted her graduation photo not too long ago, so probably her.
Were you happy or sad when you found out your babysitter was coming? I never had a babysitter because I was the babysitter.
Did you have a boyfriend in kindergarten? No. I went to an all-girls school, so I didn’t even get to interact with a lot of boys until the middle of high school.
Did you ever read the Magic Treehouse series? Nope.
Who was your best friend in elementary school? Angela. I was also friends for a long time with a girl named Jaynie, with whom I actually started to reconnect ever since she found out I was now into BTS. I find it so cool; I don’t think I’ve talked to her since the 2nd grade, 15 years ago.
Did you ever watch The Land Before Time movies? I didn’t.
Did you collect anything when you were a kid? Stickers. I'd put them on my dresser everywhere to the point it was absolutely covered. < Literally this entire answer; I don’t have any clue how my overly neat mom managed to never spank me for destroying her closet. I also liked collecting Pokemon cards and pogs even though I never knew how to use them. It just felt nice having large stacks of them lol.
Did you get an allowance? Not until high school. My grandma (and eventually househelp, when we moved) fixed up packed lunches for me and my siblings. When my mom decided to stop having house helpers at home, that’s when she started giving us an allowance to buy recess and lunch ourselves.
Were you into American Girl dolls? I was never into dolls in general. Since my sister and I were the only girls at home, we were surrounded by toys marketed for boys and that’s what I enjoyed playing with more.
Were you friends with your childhood neighbors? We played with the neighborhood kids every afternoon but I wouldn’t call them friends. I was a very shy kid and I found them too rowdy for my liking, especially the boys.
What was your biggest fear when you were a kid? Flying cockroaches. It’s still one of them.
Did you ever play the "Reader Rabbit" computer games? I don’t think so.
Did your parents let you drink soda growing up? I’m pretty sure they would’ve allowed me to, but I just never liked the feeling of fizzy drinks so I never drank soda anyway.
What was your favorite kind of cake as a kid? I think I liked mocha sponge cakes growing up, but that has changed now.

January Goals Update and Notes
Chapters I studied with Listening-Reading Method: Notes lol:
i do not control wtf motivates me. perhaps it literally just is i have to get really attached to a book.
anyway, february is here. i am thinking i may just start listen-reading to Guardian this month. I know I’ve been debating whether to finish Tian Ya Ke first before I started guardian, or do both at the same time. I am leaning toward starting Guardian, sooner rather than later. Even though it’s still me ‘not finishing one thing before starting the next.’
In the end, any studying is better than no studying. And I haven’t been motivated to read chinese lately. However, I have been motivated to read english - and listening-reading will be 1/3 english reading which may help push me to keep progressing. And the 1/3 chinese reading portion is more passive, since I follow along with the audio, so I can have a break from the dictionary for a while. Also... why did I initially start learning Chinese? To read Guardian. To read it in chinese, and english translation. If I’m thinking about my most prioritized goals, this task is more directly in line with what I want to accomplish than finishing reading Tian Ya Ke. Although, both ARE related.
Also, I think anything I learn from listening-reading to Guardian, will improve my reading/listening skills when moving onto any other priest novel. So it won’t be a detriment, it will only make going back to Tian Ya Ke easier afterward - since I will know more words, and recognize them in listening better (and ideally, pick up some words visually in reading better). So I think... if I do get motivated to start listening-reading to Guardian this month, then I’m just going to start doing it.
A note about Tian Ya Ke and difficulty: I am still noticing improvement. I am getting to the point where 1 page has a handful of unknown words at most, usually only 1-3 getting in the way of me easily following the plot. I am noticing I’m getting better at guessing what an unknown word is supposed to mean, guessing what the idioms that seem vaguely familiar mean (and remembering at least some of the words in them). Reading Tian Ya Ke has gotten much closer to reading Han She in terms of ease. I think I’m running into a similar number of unknown words now. I haven’t measured yet if the chapters are taking me under 30 minutes to read yet. Mainly because lately I can’t get myself to read more than 5-10 pages in short bursts at a time. So I’m not sure if reading speed has improved. But I can say that my reading recognition for Tian Ya Ke is currently better than my listening comprehension. I’ve been scanning the pages I read lately pretty fast as I read, guessing most words fine, and then just double checking their pronunciation/definition by clicking them for audio afterwards. Its currently the checking for precise sound/meaning that’s slowing down my reading of Tian Ya Ke. If I were reading it extensively, only looking up words for crucial meaning clarification, I would probably be reading it decently faster.
On a general goals note: I am still for some reason managing to focus easily on reading english books, which is not that usual for me (usually I can read 20-40 pages in a book, then can’t read more than 10 pages an hour or slower and eventually drop the book). So I’m going to keep taking advantage of this ability to focus while I’ve got the chance. It’s been really nice to finally start getting through more of my books. Right now about half are mental health related books (which I’ve been meaning to read for ages), and fiction (mostly historical romances as I’m trying to find an author that Clicks well with me lol). I’ve read 5 so far, with 2 non-fiction books in progress and 1 fiction in progress. That is a LOT in one month for me, each book being 200-500 pages. Lets say 350 pages average, I’ve read over 1750 pages so far this year in January. Yes, that might only be the same as 2 ‘big’ books... but in my defense, non-fiction is soooo much harder to focus on (like i said, i get about 10-20 pages read in an hour of non-fiction even now that i’m focusing -o- ), and I just have not managed to read anything considerable in a while. So... while I still have long term language goals, I’m not going to be upset if they end up getting sidelined again this month. Reading more is something I’m enjoying getting back into, and I truly have so many books to finally read... so I’m glad I’m doing it now.
Things accomplished in January:
Chinese novel chapters read in January: 8 (I’m on Tian Ya Ke chapter 27, page 10. I’m around 33% through the novel. I read around half as many chapters this past month compared to December... and honestly like 4 of these chapters I remember reading one Saturday that I managed to focus. I just wasn’t in the mood to intensively read very much in December).
Chapters I studied with Listening-Reading Method: 2 (Wow that’s not much... both were Tian Ya Ke chapters. Doing both intensive reading AND listening-reading to a single chapter really burns me out. Again, I just wasn’t in a reading mood, so I mostly skipped l-r to speed up how long chapters took to read).
Japanese Audio listened to: 14 (I was listening through Quicksleur - which is pimsleur but with the silences cut out, there are 3 sections, 30 audio files in each section. I completed 14 audio files in section 1. I’ve been listening to Quicksleur to try and refresh the japanese I used to know. Is it working? Yeah, I’m remembering a fair bit of what I used to know. I definitely think re-reading Tae Kim’s Grammar Guide or Japanese in 30 Hours would help reaffirm the grammar I used to know - but I haven’t been motivated to read grammar books. I was listening to quicksleur while playing video games, and that worked well as a low effort way to include listening. I will probably just keep listening to quicksleur, then change my audio to japanese and see what vocab I can refresh. Then maybe in a few months, once quicksleur is completed, I may move into using Japanese Audio Lessons and my actual grammar books. At the moment, realistically, I have 0 time for my grammar books. And I want to focus on audio primarily anyway for now - I do NOT want my kanji/spelling knowledge of japanese to affect my chinese reading skills right now. And I know, having tried, that for me they definitely do affect each other - I’ll see kanji and the pinyin pronunciation will jump in my head, or I’ll know a word in japanese and see it in a chinese novel and have to remind myself its a new word there. This mix up happened a lot when I first started studying Chinese - as I’d just come off of studying Japanese for 2.5 years. Which was very weird, it made learning chinese words harder, but the more chinese i learned the easier manga got to Read for a while. Anyway now that I’m refreshing my japanese, even Without seeing kanji on purpose - when I see them in my chinese reading i’m re-remembering the japanese pronunciation and word that hanzi also goes to. Which is already a bit awkward. So I don’t really want to add kanji included study on purpose for a while. I’ll just keep trying this audio focus for now... with the added benefit its easy to include, and doesn’t have to compete for my energy level I have to make myself read. I am well aware I’ll need to go to my long term, more well rounded, japanese study plan later on. But for now this is fine).
Chinese Spoonfed Audio: 0
Manhua chapters read: 0
Chinese shows watched: 1 (Watched anti fraud league ep 1 in chinese, and again I think some small videos and partial eps of other shows. I haven’t watched many shows period this past month though, so I’m not surprised this is low.
Personal goals met:
Personal books read: 5 (3 non-fiction , 2 fiction novels, 2 non-fiction in progress, 1 fiction in progress. This is really where my energy has been happy to focus on this past January. The non-fiction I’m particularly happy with as its a lot of mental health books I’ve been meaning to read for ages, and some of them I really think have helped me to cope with my panic attacks better. Lately my panic attacks have been less overwhelming, to a degree I think because my inner thoughts during them are having an easier time getting back to self-soothing patterns so I can calm down, and I’m more willing to openly express I’m feeling so bad which I think is helping me process the emotions faster, which helps them end sooner. I read a few as mentioned, although I literally cannot recommend complex ptsd by pete walker if the subject material is relevant to you. That book definitely helped the most, and the books he recommended within it are what I’m reading through now. The book was compassionate, informative, very supportive and encouraging of the recovery journey and its steps, and had a ton of very helpful exercises that can be put to practical use).
Continued to get my stomach to not hurt, also got it to work better without medicine. Avoiding very processed carbs - mainly white breads like biscuits, pizza, pie crust, cinamon rolls that come in those cans - has kept my bloating down and the pain down. Eating apples again every day with coffee/tea is helping, both with not needing my medicine, and with foods not hurting me/not bloating me so much. So I guess I have to keep eating apples every single day -o-. I ate pizza several times this past month (with my lactose medicine) and I only bloated a little, it did not hurt, which was GREAT. Eating biscuits from a can still hurt though - happily the bloating only happened a little, but the pain sucks, and definitely is caused by those kinds of carbs specifically. Other then minimizing dairy and that specific carb type, my stomach’s been tolerating other carbs pretty well. I’ve kept my daily bloating low even with some foods that ‘could hurt’ per day, to 1-2 lbs. Which is great. The worst I’ve bloated this month was by 4 lbs (biscuits), which hurt a bit but thankfully subsided after a day, and that is a big improvement over the 7-10 lb bloating I’d get in a single day from one ‘less tolerated’ food choice. I’m very happy I haven’t had to take my medicine daily, hopefully I’m on the way to getting my stomach as happy as it was this summer.
Goals for February:
Listen-Read Method Guardian, until I’ve gotten through the entire novel. I will probably start this in February, not sure yet if it will be postponed. This, and goal 2, are the main priorities for chinese and I don’t mind which one happens as long as I do some of either of these goals.
Continue reading Tian Ya Ke. Work on reading through my first complete novel in chinese. This goal has not changed, though I predict it may be postponed as I’m not sure how much time I will dedicate to it in February.
Optional. Audios. Keep listening to Japanese Quicksleur when there’s down time (like playing games), and Chinese Spoonfed audio if I feel like it.
Personal. Keep reading while I’ve got the motivation to. I am really enjoying getting through all these books I’ve wanted to read for so long.
So same chinese goals as last month - and I imagine these goals will remain the same into the spring and possibly as summer starts. For japanese, just continuing to progress to refresh my memory is all I am planning at the moment.
And a note to myself: it is shocking how motivating making a little line item in my notes saying “Personal books read:” managed to be. I added that to my to-do list in the middle of January, and since then have read a TON. So just as it motivates me to read chinese chapters, it looks like that particular motivator can work for more things.

What’s your favourite food(s)? 👀
ooh i have lots of favorite foods 😍😅 i’ll just list them all out below cause this is unintentionally gonna be a super long post lol. i’m so so sorry in advance!!
it’s just with like so many things, i don’t have one favorite thing. or like two or three. it’s hard to compare things to each other to to say one is better than the other, you know? 😅 so everything is just kinda all tied on my list of favorites!
this also applies to bands, songs, actors/actresses (but Robbie is at the top of the list and is number one for sure lol) and tv shows (tua and doctor who are tied for first lol) and movies (back to the future and the road within are tied for first as well 😅) and a lot of other things that i can’t think of at the moment lol
anywaaay… now that i’m done with that long random tangent, my favorite foods are
- grilled cheese
- waffles!! 😍
- pasta. especially with my nonnie’s (that’s grandma in Italian 😅) homemade sauce or when my mom and brother have tried to make it and it almost tastes exactly like it! it’s amazing!
- bread. i can’t be more specific than that atm. it’s definitely something you’d have to see in person to understand why i just said bread 😅
- grilled chicken pitas from a coney island with just chicken and cheese. nothing else (i’m a picky eater 😓)
- crispy chicken sub from tubby’s with just chicken and cheese. as you can start to tell, i really love chicken lol.
- salami cheese melts. (my great aunt taught my brother and i how to make this and a ham or turkey one when we were kids. it’s easy grilled cheese with lunch meat. toast the bread, put the cheese and meat on the bread and then microwave it 😂 but sometimes i’ll make it on the stove)
- Cool Ranch Doritos!! these are my absolute favorite chips 😅💙
- swiss rolls
- cookie dough with not a ton of chocolate chips. i know you’re not supposed to eat raw cookie dough but it’s delicious! plus, my mom and aunt owning a bakery makes it a little tough to not want to eat cookie dough when they make a family recipe of Italian chocolate chip cookies! 😅
- watermelon! 😍
-cucumbers
- salad
- pepperoni pizza
- chicken nuggets
- not a food but i love icees/slurpees 😅
- popcorn
- mozzarella sticks (i’m the cliché lactose intolerant person who still eats dairy even though i shouldn’t lmao)
- strawberry glazed donuts (specifically from dunkin’ donuts)
- chocolate glazed and old fashion glazed timbits
- onion/everything bagels toasted with butter
- french bread pizzas (the red baron ones specifically lol)
and i think that’s it 😅 there may be more (yes, there may be more. i love food. please no one judge me 😅) but i can’t think of anything else lol.

things i wish someone told me about coeliac disease (UK edition)
apparently some doctors are still not telling coeliacs what they actually need to know so here’s some fun facts --
*coeliac disease is likely to go undiagnosed if you don’t have digestive symptoms. for a lot of folks, their first symptoms are odd things like weight loss, bloating, mouth ulcers etc that take ages for doctors to correctly diagnose as coeliac disease. I know someone whose only sign was tingling in her fingers (nerve problems are a Thing sometimes). I don’t wanna freak folks out but check this list of symptoms and if you’re worried, ask your doc for a blood test to check for coeliac disease. I went in and out of my docs for years with various symptoms (mostly from the anaemia) and no one caught it until I was finally having noticeable digestive trouble.
* coeliac disease an autoimmune disease. not an allergy. not an intolerance. when you eat gluten, your gut just screams NOPE and throws everything out of there.
* this means if you keep eating gluten you will have serious long-term health problems because your gut can't absorb shit
* as I mentioned, anaemia is one of these associated health problems. a lot of people have this at diagnosis b/c your gut hasn’t been absorbing the nutrients it needs. it leaves you very weak and tired, and the longer it goes on, the worse it gets.
* long-term anaemia / malnutrition causes so many fucking health problems I can't list them all. basically, if your body sucks, there's a good chance it's a side-effect of your coeliac disease going undiagnosed. I got shitty joints and a shitty heart and shitty bones and godknowswhatelse and every time my doc is like "hey, guess what? it’s coeliac disease!"
* you know what a common side effect is? LACTOSE INTOLERANCE. this is because, once again, your gut hates you from all that gluten you've been killing it with, so it starts to muck around and kick out other things too. but good news! most of the time this is reversible!!! lay off any lactose for a couple of months, reintroduce it to your diet slowly, and you -- like me -- might be a-ok
*some folks with coeliac disease can’t digest oats either as they contain a similar protein. I found that I was kinda squiffy with them at first but as soon as my gut had calmed down I was a-ok with GF oats (this is good b/c 99% of good GF biscuits are made with oat flour, RIP to everyone that can’t eat them)
* so... your bones are probably fucked. if you were diagnosed early and your doctors are on it, you might be okay but for a lot of people it means osteopenia, and further down the line, osteoporosis (meaning it's v easy to break bones). you need to be eating, like, double the regular amount of calcium every day. most people are put on calcium tablets with combined vitamin D (to help absorb the calcium) but even on top of that, you need to be getting a lot in your diet. If you're still lactose intolerant then switch to lacto-free versions of dairy products or eat tofu like there's no tomorrow. It's super important that you get enough.
* relatedly, bone health!!! You should be doing MODERATE impact exercises like jogging to strengthen the bones but nothing high-impact like tennis. load-bearing exercises are good too. here’s some examples (in detail) given to me by the rheumatology dept
* people have different sensitivity levels. in the UK, certified gluten-free products have to be 20 parts per million or less, but in the US this is 100! marmite lives somewhere between these two and can cause some coeliacs to have a reaction. please be aware when you eat international gluten-free foods that they might have more parts per million than your body is used to
* because you're super sensitive to gluten, not only do you need to check the bold allergens on the ingredients, but the small print too. it might say "made in a factory that handles gluten" or "may contain traces of gluten" and that’s a no-go
* similarly, be careful in restaurants. Apparently it's still perfectly legal for restaurants to say a dish is "gluten free" and then put your nice GF bread in the same fucking toaster as regular bread and have you shitting your pants for days. Just because the ingredients are GF doesn't mean they're cooking it in an allergen-conscious manner. If its not a Coeliac UK certified restaurant, always ask about their methods. Is that milkshake made in a GF blender? Is your fry-up cooked in a separate pan? The first time I got glutened after my diagnosis it was because my GF naan bread shared a tray with a regular one. A lot of places won't even fucking think about this stuff.
* if you're in a gluten-eating household, you've got a big expense coming up. you need to buy a GF toaster at the very least and I would recommend also a separate baking tray (because pizzas, garlic breads etc stick to that shit like no tomorrow) and a saucepan (or anything else that regularly contains pasta/noodles/etc). You'll also need a separate bread knife and board. Separate butter. Separate strainer if you're the type to drain your pasta. Line anything suspicious (e.g.your sandwich toaster, a communal baking tray) with baking parchment. Don’t use bare rungs in your oven or hob. And buy separate spreads and condiments, unless your household is very well trained in not dipping their crumb-covered knives into those things. I've even got separate plates, kitchen utensils, and cutlery. It seems extreme but I haven't had a cross-contamination incident since. Just think: has gluten touched this? And if so, do your best to minimise the risk.
* living GF is expensive long-term too. GF bread costs twice as much as regular bread. Restaurants often charge extra for GF alternatives. I had to switch from having toast in the morning to cereal because it's much more reasonably priced. I eat more fruit than I ever have before just because GF snacks cost so much. I used to have breakfast bars lol say goodbye to that shit unless you wanna be broke
* things I didn't realise I couldn't eat: crisps (a lot of your standard crisps are made with ??? production methods), candied nuts (most of these are made in factories that handle gluten), soy sauce, strawberry laces and a whole bunch of fave sweets (contain wheat starch to bind them - check this list for safe sweets), marmite (you can buy a GF yeast extract that is only 50% worse than the original)
*good food you actually can eat: most cadburys but not most nestle, GF beer which tastes exactly the same, schar pretzels are actually the shit, so are their BBQ pringles and those little chocolate bars with hazelnuts, Morrisons free from frozen mini hash browns will cure your depression, M&S do these bacon tortilla rolls which... OH BOY. Quiche alternatives are pretty damn good but I've yet to find a pizza that doesn't make me want to cry.
*speaking of supermarkets... Morrisons stock a good range of stuff and tend to have everything in one aisle, M&S have many yummy (and expensive) treats, Sainsbury's has good own brand things including bread, Tesco's are fairly decent and stock a lot of baking things, ASDA are the king of GF cake, if you're still lacto-free then Waitrose sell LF cheese including halloumi, and check your your local hippy food store because I found the best goddamn bread in mine (Incredible Bakery Company - you are £4.50 a loaf but I have no regrets)
*party risks: if there's a BBQ, insist that your things go first or have a separate BBQ, or, if worse comes to worse, just eat cold snacks. (Beware of sausages! Many aren't GF!) If its a chip and dip situation, either everything has to be GF (easily done) or have your own dip. BUFFETS ARE LITERALLY OUR WORST NIGHTMARE. the amount of coeliacs I know that have been glutened at one are INSANE. even if those tasty treats are labelled 'gluten free' they've probably be contaminated. everything at a goddamn buffet is contaminated. Dinner party? Well meaning friends will want to cook for you but unless their kitchen is set up as above, it's safer to bring your own food -- if you're very lucky, you will have friends who take the time to learn about allergens and will clean every item in their kitchen before cooking and serving an entire GF meal. these friends are to be treasured -- nay, worshipped.
*fast food. there’s no good way to put this but you’re never having that guilty pleasure 2am burger again. mcdonalds fries are miraculously GF though. (a lot of takeaways recycle oil so even if the ingredients are GF it’s often not safe but mcdonalds always use a separate fryer for chips). indian takeaway is great as most dishes don’t contain gluten. on the flip side, you’ll only be able to have about 5 items on the chinese menu (soy sauce is in everything, yo) so be prepared to learn those 5 items by heart. dominoes do Coeliac UK certified GF pizza!!! (buuuuut not during covid). chains like pizza express have got our back and will even serve you GF doughballs
*coeliac UK are your best friend! most of the things I’ve mentioned are described in detail on their website. they also have a barcode scanner app that will tell you if foods are safe, and they have a restaurant guide, and useful things like translation guides for when you go abroad.
That's all I've got right now but hmu with any questions or corrections. Take care of yourself, folks. <3
