That's a really good question. I don't know that I know the answer - I don't know that it's anything quantifiable.

I feel a frisson every time I've been away and I see the sign welcoming me back to the Mitten, and then the sign entering the county (and usually I do, because I'm generally coming home the fast way, which means interstates or state highways).

I feel something every time I see a Great Lake (even the one that isn't ours).

There is something about walking in the front door.

I love that first night sleeping in my bed again.

I suspect this is all rather banal and near-universal, though.

Home... I don't know. It's where I can be myself, I guess? I don't have to worry (or at least get to worry less). ...I hope I get to experience that feeling with someone someday.

Once Danny was an adult, he decided to join Ellie in her ‘permanent world tour’. It’s better than staying in Amity where the opinion of Phantom hasn’t gotten much better. Besides, the portal caused the veil to get weaker, allow ghost to wreak havoc where ever they want.

He’s met a lot new ghost cause of this too. Old as Mycenaean Greece to non humans who came to Earth and died there. Danny’s learnt so much from them that he’s basically a walking in Encyclopaedia.

So, Danny’s decided “fuck it.” and has it became a part-time history teacher. It’s fun! He knows the details by heart and is able to make it more fun than just droning on about the same old wars and whatever. He enjoys it, the kids enjoy it and the ghosts having their stories told!

Of course, this does cause some problems when people try to correct him. Danny’s argument? “I got them correct sources.”

And when anyone asks him how knows his sources are correct? “My source was there when it happened.”

Cue the dc world thinking that Danny’s just some immortal guy whose decided to use his immortality for good(TM)

to be fair, the chronological placement of his birthday story just doesn't make any sense in general. like, it can only really take place during his second year, since Ace and Malleus are both there...yet we have seen pretty definitively what Silver was doing on the evening before/morning of his 18th birthday, and it was very much NOT his history homework. this myth?

jk jk I think it's just one of those card stories that's meant to be more...perpendicular to canon, if that makes sense? 😅 like a lot of them aren't really supposed to fit into a specific point in the timeline; instead all the characters and relationships tend to be somewhere vaguely post-episode 1 (occasionally with a bonus post-6 Ortho) except Yuu is already friends with everyone and nobody is surprised to hear them call Malleus Tsunotarou.

mostly they can get away with it, but it starts getting a bit weird with the cards that are supposed to be set at specific times. :T for those I think you gotta just kind of suspend your disbelief and take 'em as, like...little what-if AUs, or something like that! it's not exactly not canon, but more like. this is Silver's birthday if none of the narrative development happened and so his curse is still in effect, or something. 🤷 uhhhh basically Twst's timeline is an eldritch thing that cannot be perceived by mortal eyes, to try will lead to nothing but suffering, down this path dwells only madness.

that said I do 100% accept the presented canon that Silver's roommate is in eternal torment. this is the real victim of Twst right here.

The Dandadan AU takes place in a modern setting, much like the anime/manga does. There are legends about people who could control the elements in ancient times, but those are just tales—humans can't bend.

Spirits and Yokai, however, are a different story.

Each character's supernatural abilities reflect their original bending prowess! Zuko is a bit of an exception, since I'm leaning towards the shadow and stealth aspect of the Blue Spirit. Fire is still there, just in a different form.

Katara has natural bloodbending powers which the Painted Lady enhances. Whenever Katara taps into the yokai's curse on her, she becomes able to control water as well. Azula (in Aira's role!) will get lightning, illusion, and deception powers from a Kemurikage yokai.

Seiko's role gets passed on to Hama and Iroh. They're both part of the White Lotus, a society of mediums and yokai hunters from all nations.

Hama is Katara's Gran Gran, a stern and rather intense old woman who has made several deals with the Gods of the Land. She delivers corrupted souls to them in exchange for strength, protection, and an emergency tap into the bloodbending powers that she wouldn't be able to harness otherwise.

Meanwhile, Iroh becomes spiritually enlightened after his son's death. He's a beacon for corrupted spirits and bloodthirsty yokai—mostly because of his unnatural ability to rehabilitate said beings. The Painted Lady is one such yokai, and isn't it ironic that Iroh's own nephew is now one of his patients?

Hama sends most of the yokai she hunts down to Iroh due to his ability for dealing with them. If Iroh can't help a yokai move on peacefully, she finishes the job. Not because he can't do it, but Hama is the one who does what she considers to be "the fucking bulk of the iceberg" and Iroh can't take all the credit for it, damn it.

As for Aang...

The Avatar State is terrifying, which makes it the perfect stand in for the thing. Aang has such an outstanding amount of spiritual energy that he's a beacon for all spirits and yokai out there. Which...isn't good. Especially when one of the most ancient and powerful spirits out there wants to possess him.

Which leads us to the Avatar State.

I made the choice to remove his power over the four elements to focus instead on something much more interesting and fitting for this AU: energybending.

The Avatar is able to manipulate all vital and spiritual energy around him, as well as give or take everyone else's powers at will. This makes him pretty much the most dangerous being to ever exist, since he can make everyone powerless by simply willing it so.

As for the Avatar's motivation? He's a protective yet ruthless spirit that has laid dormant for thousands of years, but a certain event woke him up to a world in disarray. His purpose has always been to keep balance in the world, but the concept itself of balance can be easily corrupted.

The Avatar comes from a world that doesn't exist anymore—a far better place that he wishes to recreate and bring to life once more. Even if he must destroy this version of earth to birth it anew.

Incorrect, the fact that Biden has dropped out and a candidate with history of supporting medicare for all and being more receptive to a ceasefire in the I/P conflict has made me go from "I cannot morally support the Democratic nominee" to "I am voting for the Democratic nominee despite the fact she isn't perfect in every respect." I come crawling on my knees bc who better to ask this than the number 1 Espera fan. 🥺 I've just been thinking about Sleep Token (what a surprise lol), and I'm curious if there's any info on how Ves and the Espera ladies met? Everyone in this band seems so close, so I've been questioning how they all became colleagues and friends. 🥺❤️

AAAAAAAA Crow!!! Thank you sooo so much for this question!!! This is something I've been wondering myself for a long time now, but somehow never really delved into it - this gave me the perfect excuse to do so! 💙

I'm gonna preface this by saying we do not actually have much info about that. This is simply me connecting dots with what little information we have publicly available.

So! We can't really talk about Espera, without talking about Exploring Birdsong. As we all know, they were the opening band for Sleep Token on their first headliner ritual, the infamous St. Pancras Old Church ritual, back in 2018.

This is the first time Exploring Birdsong comes in contact with Sleep Token, and they would be their staple opening band up until January 2020. From there on forward, only their lead singer Lyns and the backing vocalists Paige and Mattie (later known as the collective group Espera) would continue to be performing with the band as live backing vocals (as of 2023 they seem to be permanent live members, as before they didn't tour with them every time).

Now, how did they meet? That's the big question here.

Exploring Birdsong were founded when Lyns, Matt and Jonny were studying music in Liverpool (in LIPA to be precise), back in 2015/16 if memory serves me right. Starting in 2017, they released a couple of singles and started to perform live (with the other 2 Espera girls, before they were a thing). Most (if not all) of their shows at the time were set in Liverpool, Manchester, or around that area.

Sleep Token at the time was playing shows mostly in London and around the south, opening for other bands and such. Quite the geographical difference, so it seems unlikely they would've met then. Even in terms of music, Sleep Token was more involved in the UK metal sphere at the time, while EB were very much in the prog-rock side of alt. music.

In fact, there's this one 2020 interview of EB, right after they finished touring with ST for the last time, that mentions that difference in public between EB fans and ST fans. Here's that excerpt:

To further emphasise that EXPLORING BIRDSONG are making waves they were hand picked to support the enigmatic SLEEP TOKEN on a handful of UK dates which gave them the ideal chance to test the waters and see how their offering would fare in a more metal focused environment.

“The reception was very warm!” Lynsey exclaims. “The crowd were really receptive to our songs. We’re not in a totally different vein to SLEEP TOKEN but I was intrigued to see how we would get on with a more metal oriented crowd. There are definitely elements of our songs which are similar but I was apprehensive how they would react but people came up to us afterwards telling us how much they enjoyed it so I’m really glad.”

Every publication dating 2020 and back that mentions Exploring Birdsong and Sleep Token together, references the fact that EB were hand-picked by ST to open for them (again, they were the staple opener for Sleep Token during that 2018-20 period, save for a couple of dates where schedules didn't align). Which again, is a bit odd given they were in very different scenes, both geographical and musical. As far as I know, none of them (EB) have any connection to any of the guys' past projects, so that can't be it either.

HOWEVER, back in March 2018, Exploring Birdsong announced they would open for the Welsh prog-rock band Godsticks in May 2018, in the Camden Assembly (London).

As far as I can tell from their FB page, this would be their first time as a band performing in London. As we all know, Sleep Token have performed in Camden in the past (Camden Rocks festival in June 2018 actually!) In fact, Camden is a known spot for alt music and culture, so it would make sense for locals (musicians and fans alike) to frequent these places and get to know bands that way.

Funnily enough, Enter Shikari have performed in the Camden Assembly, one of the first bands signed to Basick Records - Sleep Token's first label.

It is very likely that Sleep Token (and I'm gonna go on a limb and say Vessel himself, given the similarity in music influences he has with EB, as opposed to ii and iii who come from VERY different, much, much heavier musical backgrounds) may have seen their opening set, and got in contact with Exploring Birdsong then. They were only announced as opening acts for the ST Pancras show in September, which gives them plenty of time to get acquainted with each other and have that first ritual together.

Exploring Birdsong were already set to be in London in October to support Godsticks again, so it's possible they took the opportunity and invited them to the inaugural ritual.

Now, what's really funny too, is that even though EB would only release their first EP in 2019, they had quite a few singles/repertoire ready (including a few vocal-only covers on their socials).

The most notable is actually their (Don't Fear) The Reaper cover, which was recorded right after their Camden show, and released later that summer, which was recorded in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral - that's right! They performed in a church months before Sleep Token did 😌

The cover itself is beautiful, the girl's voices are pretty much center stage, and the whole vibe feels both eerie and sacred, not unlike Sleep Token's (especially at the time). I've reccomended it here before, and really can't overstate how beautiful that cover is.

Would that maybe influence ST's decision to have them on board? Maybe 👀 This cover was also featured in Kerrang! Radio (which is a big deal given they don't usually feature covers), so you can say it definitely caused an impact.

This is honestly my best guess as how they came together. I can't find any more links between Sleep Token and Exploring Birdsong aside from this, and given their overlapping schedules prior to this, it seems unlikely they would've come across each other.

I think it's really sweet they heard this random band one day and went - "Yeah. These are the ones, this is it." And to see that friendship continue to exist (the girls now being a seemingly permanent part of their live acts; the guys still supporting each other) is really really cute.

Fun fact, although EB stopped opening for ST in 2020, they were actually all together in 2023, where both Sleep Token and Exploring Birdsong were playing Radar Festival. Given their history, and the fact that the girls were part of both sets, it's likely they were all watching each other and having a good ol' time 🥹💙

If anyone has any more info about how Sleep Token and Exploring Birdsong met, I would really appreciate that!! This is as far as I managed to gather.

So, it is Misogyny to call out ‘love’ whose basis is treachery, dishonesty and scars left by the betrayal? Shisui only needed to be a man to showcase how quickly people would have flipped on that ‘ship'...

Moreover, hardly care who ships whom, I care about narrative distortion and thinking somehow Jinshi, who appears in every volume, is comparable in potential and meaning to someone who largely disappears...And somehow the character would have been a better choice over a man who rewrote half of his kingdom's rules in both political and personal sphere for a woman...

Lastly, KnH is what it is because of its exemplary, complex and intriguing women and female characters....They are badass and formidable and memorable...KnH/TAD would hardly be what it is had it not been for its female-orientation...And Shisui was definitely a complex and tragically beautiful character...And who knows MaoMao and Shisui meet in future (which most likely will be) and I bet it would be interesting...But having said this she did not deserve to be raised at level of a heroine or main character at the expense of others, plain and simple...Narrative has worked, and will work, without her...The fact that Shisui actually kind of becomes a reason MaoMao comes to even become wary of her relationship with women in terms of safety is conveniently ignored...She struggles with Yao and Enen and even gets bitterly reminded of Shisui's betrayal when she thinks Chue betrayed her in that particular sequence of Western arc II...So this is not something that is talked about by the ‘misogyny' folks as how much difficult it becomes MaoMao to trust even female friendships again...

Also, legion of complex, beautiful and intriguing characters waiting to be adapted by manga and anime are far too fabulous and important for me to miss Shisui, I am sorry...So, it will take me even more of developing a blind spot, or worse being in denial, that somehow she was indispensable to the narrative or to MaoMao, and that she had potential to become like Jinshi for her... I have problem with this view not from a shipping context (ship whoever you want, heck I might start shipping Jinshi and Rikuson) but I have a huge problem when people start to IMPOSE their interpretation/ship on the narrative.... And tend to diminish a pivotal character like Jinshi or suggest somehow Shisui and Jinshi's love for MaoMao is same... Well, no, you do not lie to people you love, put their lives at stake for your grand plan (or performance) or reveal everything to them in the heart of rebellion... So, as I said in the beginning of this post, would have been fun to see acts of Shisui being committed by a man and you would have seen the same people talking about misogyny using feminism to discredit the same ‘beloved' ship... Also, given sometimes Jinshi is deemed as toxic for way low level of dangerous behaviors (and rightfully so) and dismissed as a perfect partner for MaoMao, having a manipulating, traumatised, betraying character being painted as love interest is sure the way to understand what kind of healthy love folks want to promote! Hardly an excuse to criticise one person's language of love, while eulogising another's despite both being teenagers caught up in family politics....As I said earlier, may a Love like Shisui's never find me where all I am left with is regret, scars, angst and sense of uncertainty as to what we meant to each other...

Ending this by saying I love Shisui and poetry of her character, her bond with MaoMao and wholeheartedly empathise with her difficult circumstances but, as a reader of 16+ LNs, no way she was with MaoMao what Jinshi had been or became...MaoMao, no matter how much Shisui cared about her, was more or less, a prop in her grand performance (whom she tried to protect by first bringing her to the centre of crisis)... You don't do that to a friend, let alone someone you love... Everyone suffers in the KnH, some have really, really terrible stories, like Rikuson and Chue...While I am completely on-board with humanising the obnoxious villains (prev Emperor, Shisou) and view morality of good or bad actions with a subjective lens (Anshi), what I am against is someone's tragic story becoming an excuse of raising the character to an unwarranted pedestal who gambled on dangerous probables and betrayed a friend (Shisui), and then go on and impose it on the narrative, especially when far less manipulative and less dangerous behavior tends to pull Jinshi down from a pedestal....Also, Jinshi is put on a pedestal not because he is perfect but because he has the ability to see the wrong of his acts and courage to actively change himself for better and courage to actively go against everything that tends to harm those he cherishes, you don't see everyday a crown prince jumping in front of a bullet to save a random soldier... I love Jinshi because in spite of him being deemed as perfect, sometimes too perfect, he knows his limitations/flaws, acknowledges them and remains honest with those he loves and changes what he needs to! It is his acceptance about himself as a flawed human being despite the reverence and importance associated with his station that makes him such a forever favorite character...
