A feature I would like to see from tumblr - something that I might even *GASP!* pay a small feel for! Is some kind of feature that immediately blocks all potential followers of any of my blogs who do not have any posts. Or, you know, tumblr makes a feature wherein a person must have at least one original, introductory post on their blog to show that they are, indeed, a human being before being allowed to / unlocking the ability to follow others. I am so absolutely SICK of reporting and banning these spam / porn bots! They are TEDIOUS!

the things that make tumblr at all usable and favored by us– the older web blog features, the anonymity– that is still being taken away. it HAS been being taken away for some time now. i am urging you people to reveiwbomb the tumblr app. force them to acknowledge that users do not like these changes.

ok hot take but i think there is, actually, some linguistic utility to calling twitter 'X'. Twitter was a social media platform with certain functions and a particular culture. After elon took it over, its functions dramatically changed, and the culture on it likewise shifted. EG: paid blue checkmarks, moderation actively biased against the non-rightwing, 'cis is a slur', pay-to-win features, active promotion of misinformation, active promotion of toxic posters, worse branding, a stupid fucking AI tool, and a virulently right-wing culture are all new things that came along after elon took over.

I think in a meaningful sense Twitter is a website that is gone now, like google+ is gone. It has been replaced by X, which is a meaningfully different website. That we saw one website slowly transform into the other is beside the point, at this point the distinction between old-twitter and new-twitter is significant enough that i think using the new name actually makes sense.

The Israel vs Palestine conflict is such a long-spanning and insanely complicated thing that there's literally college courses that revolve entirely around the subject. There's people who have been studying it for 70 years who still barely understand it. There's historians with PhDs trying to piece together anything they can that could help them figure out a means to potentially instill a ceasefire or even peace altogether who have failed time and time again for decades if not literally centuries.

And yet people with 7 years of Twitter experience think they know enough about the conflict to pick a side and vouch for the destruction of the opposite side.

The amount of times I want to say "Shut the fuck up you fucking stupid idiot, you know literally nothing about this conflict, you have no idea what's actually happening, I bet if I asked your opinion on the Two State Solution you wouldn't even have a fucking clue what that means" on a daily basis reading these actual braindead moronic 16yo Twitter users' dipshit opinions who keep citing celebrity blue-checkmark Twitter posts as evidence to vouch for the eradication of a middle eastern country they don't even know a fucking thing about is STAGGERING.

I'm in my mid-30s and I stay out of politics on all sides because I am not qualified in any way to form opinions on matters so serious that they may or may not result in people being killed, and it fucking pisses me off that people half my fucking age are telling me that I should support Palestine or Ukraine or vouch for the genocide of Israel or join ANTIFA or BLM or put #FreeTaiwan in my fucking twitter bio.

It is July 25, 2024 and what may be the greatest political moment of my life is happening.

As far as anyone can tell this is the nexus of the rumor. Twitter* user @rickrudecalves posted on July 15th, 2024 that JD Vance fucked a latex glove in a couch cushion.

Now, look, I want to be upfront that this is not true. There is no such passage in Hillbilly Elegy.

However, however, the internet could not give one flying fuck if it was true. It meandered around a bit, and various blue checkmarked accounts reposted it with apparent shock but belief without fact checking.

I can't pinpoint when and how it exploded, but on July 24 the Associated Press wrote about it.

And then, and I cannot stress this enough, pulled the story. And they did it because they bypassed their editorial process so couldn't verify the fact-check.

But the damage was done. AP had commented and now every other new outlet could run the same headline. "Did JD Vance fuck a couch? News at 11." It was now mainstream headline news because AP bothered to report it - and then had to PULL THEIR NEGATION. Folks I cannot tell you how amazing that is.

I mean, I personally feel they had to grapple with the fact that you can't prove a negative. The best they can say is that no, that is not in Vance's book.

Look, it takes all kinds and who among us can cast the first stone on weird sex stuff. If J.D. Vance fucked a couch it would make me like him more. But J.D. Vance is an evangelical nutjob who believes that a man wearing a skirt is pornography and criminal. It is objectively funny that this rumor has been attached to him.

The right-wing party in America is not serious. They are laughably stupid and believe stupid things. You do not combat this by giving them airtime and treating them like they are serious.

You combat them by pointing and laughing.

Honestly there's something beautifully ironic to the blue checkmark-saga: For years you had people whining that the whole system was arbitrary and unfair, and using "checkmark" as a metonym for stupid journalists and the like, and then Musk barrels in, says "Yes, I hear your cries! Power to the people!" and replaces the old system with something that makes it look like Plato's Academy by comparison, only he can't do away with verification entirely, because it turns out there are legal risks involved, so he introduces a pared-down version and now you've got multiple types of checkmarks. It's practically a parable on the dangers of populist demagogues

At the time my thought was that surely there's going to be some sort of second part of the plan but I guess not.
