Do you ever wonder why artists paint the picture you're looking at...?
"Oppies at Trearddur Bay" was inspired by my desire to share joyful memories of summer escapades by the sea through my art.
Here, optimist dinghies are sailing at Bae Trearddur Bay, Ynys Môn / Anglesey on the North Wales coast.
These small, single-handed sailing dinghy were designed for use by young people up to the age of 15. They are one of the two most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 150,000 boats officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered. They are sailed in over 120 countries!
The piece is worked in Daniel Smith pigment-rich watercolours, including one paint containing genuine Lapis Lazuli!
The A4 (29.7cm by 21cm) unframed original is available for £75 including UK postage or, if we live close enough for us to deliver, in a frame it's £95. Please just private message me to arrange your purchase.
Or it's available in a mix of different types and sizes of prints, and printed on all sorts of lovely things (like bags, dresses, tops, scarves, homewares, gift items, etc) at:
Thanks!

As the project at Los Alamos came to a close and the war finally ended, you found yourself at a crossroads.
You and Robert had naturally reconvened, once again turning serious, knowing that you wanted to continue your education and pursue further opportunities. Despite our strong connection, you believed you both needed to explore your paths.
With a promise to keep in touch after Los Alamos, the two of you exchanged letters regularly. You shared our experiences, thoughts, and plans for the future. It was comforting to maintain that connection despite the physical distance between us.
After living at home for too long, you decided to take a gap year and embark on a sailing adventure with your brothers in the Mediterranean. It was a chance to recharge, explore the world, and gain a new perspective on life. During that year, you occasionally received letters from Robert, updating me on his work and his struggles. He was going through a difficult phase, facing challenges and uncertainties.
While you understood that Robert was going through a rough patch, his emotional turmoil and busy schedule made it harder for him to maintain the same level of communication you had initially. Despite his love for you, he seemed to be withdrawing, perhaps out of a desire to shield me from his struggles. He often mentioned feeling like he had "hurt me enough," which you interpreted as his way of not wanting to burden you further.
Our relationship faced a significant strain during this period. I tried my best to be understanding and patient, giving him the space he seemed to need. However, it was clear that our paths were diverging, at least for the time being. You continued to pursue your education while he grappled with his own challenges.
Leaving behind the world of physics, you embraced a new chapter of my life by pursuing a Master’s in English at UVA. It was a drastic change from your previous field; you wanted to distance yourself. As you immersed yourself in your studies, news of Oppenheimer's security hearing reached you through various sources. His situation was a reminder of the complexities and challenges that can arise from your choices.
During this time, your correspondence dwindled, and I pondered the reasons behind it. Eventually, all of the letters stopped. You assumed Robert’s legal and personal troubles had taken precedence, making it difficult to maintain regular communication. It bothered you a little at first, but with your studies, you found yourself distracted.
Groves reached out to you to testify at Oppenheimer's hearing. Weighing the pros and cons, you declined. It wasn't an easy choice, but you believed that your absence could offer a kind of distance that might be beneficial. Testifying could have complicated our strained connection, and you also saw no point or need to interact with the past.
Eventually, you found yourself both connected and disconnected from the events surrounding Oppenheimer's hearings. While following the proceedings to some extent, your academic pursuits often took precedence. It was a balancing act between staying informed and maintaining your own academic progress.
Life has a way of moving forward, and as you worked toward your Doctoral degree, you built a new foundation for yourself. The hearings and the events surrounding them served as a reminder of the complex intersections between personal and professional lives, the consequences of one's actions, and the paths you each choose to take.
You hadn’t heard from Hatomi since you graduated early from Berkeley. She’s found your number, and when you pick the home, she’s thrilled to hear your voice. She’s in Texas with her husband and newborn; congratulating you on graduating from UVA. Hatomi wants to come, and you’re happy to invite her for an escape. As you catch up, she mentions she’s bringing a surprise, but you don’t think much about it.
As time flies, the day of your graduation is rather hot in early June.
You never got to experience an actual graduation, so now was your time. The graduation perfectly fit UVA’s loud energy, the whooing, lots of alcohol, and an overall extension of the celebration. It’s boiling outside, and you are sweating in your dark cap and gown. Once you get your diploma, all you want to do is leave; but of course, Hatomi and your family make you stay for forced photos. Some of them are genuine, such as Hatomi hugging you crying and your brothers spraying you with champagne. They make you smile and laugh as if you were a child.
Your parents are in conversation with other people when Hatomi drags your arm through the crowd.
“There you are,” She mutters as she grabs your elbow and drags you to the crowd, “Robert! She’s right here.”
No. You force yourself to think it’s not what it actually is. There’s no way it can. Any minute you’d wake up and think that's some bizarre dream.
But it’s not.
The brown porkpie hat, an oversized suit hanging on his slender body, pipe, and bluest (and saddest) eyes you’ve ever seen are Robert, who stands right in front of you.
His eyes widen, and so do yours. The two of you stare at each other in a state of happiness and shock. Hatomi checks her fake watch and says she has to leave, but she’ll find the two of you later, and in her words, most certainly with one another. She runs off, and you try to catch her before she leaves, but he’s gone with the wind. And for the first time in two years, you’re alone with Robert.
“Congratulations,” Robert says with his hands on his hips. He wears a similar to suit to the one he wore on the first day of your Physics class at Berkeley, “I’m proud of all you’ve done, y/n.”
“Thank you,” You reply with a blush. You fiddle with your fingers as you come up with a response, “So, she invited you?”
“Yes, and no. I heard from some sources that you were down here, and well, I wanted to come and support you,” Robert admitted. He looked like he wanted to say something else, and so did you.
“How have you been?” He casually asked, knowing that the response to that was lengthy. He was going to be, and both of you knew that.
“That’s the question I should be asking you. Here, do you want to go somewhere more private?”
Right outside of the Rotunda on UVA’s campus is the more intimate place you can get.
The grandeur of Thomas Jefferson's vision unfolds before you, a canvas where neoclassical elegance meets the lush embrace of the outdoors. While gardens bloom with nature's palette, from the elegance of the roses to the joyful vitality of wildflowers, the botanical companions of the Rotunda offer their form of inspiration. Trees stand as venerable witnesses, their branches swaying in the breeze as if whispering secrets only they have heard.
You and Robert sit by the water fountain, each smoking a cigarette from Robert’s container. As you sit side by side, the idea of grabbing his hand strikes you. You don’t grab it, but you notice that Robert looks older; more tired.
“They humiliated you,” You mention, taking a blow of your cigarette.
Robert looks over and holds back a long sigh.
“I was a fool to think that the weapon would end all wars. It didn’t just end all war; but created more,” There’s regret and sadness to his voice. His eyes are still blue, but they lack the fiery spark you once saw.
“I told them that the more they knew, the worse it would become–”
“And then they threw you to the wolves. You knew, everyone knew,” You alluded towards the scientists on the Los Alamos project. Not all of them.
As you watched and read about the trial, some of the very scientists Robert had worked with had turned against him; accusing him of being a communist and using the bomb for a Soviet advantage. All of the claims were false, only used as a way to bring Robert down for wanting to step back from creating another Holocaust. Strauus humiliated him, causing Robert to lose both his security clearance and his public image. Not That you ever liked Strauss that much anyways.
When he contacted you, offering to pay a sum of money to testify against Robert and make it seem as if he took advantage of you and infected you with “red commy blood”. Seeing that word, you tore the letter up and threw it into the trash. You’re glad you did.
Robert reaches for another cigarette and ensures his inhale is as long as his exhale. Robert puts his hands on the fountain’s concrete, an inch away from yours. It’s just like old times; he doesn’t say it, but he wants it.
“Well, they voted against Strauss. If it had not been for Hill, I would have possibly gone to jail, or worse,” Robert remarked, “I heard you were one of the scientists who signed a petition to defend. Is that true?”
Robert thinks that you saved him, in which maybe, you did. You thought about the rejection to support him through the Trial was a topic for another conversation, so you simply told him that other scienets from the Los Alamos project reached out for your support, and you gladly helped. Robert thanked you, and for the first time, he genuinely smiled that day. He looks down at you with his gray, shaking hand reaching closer.
“You look beautiful,” Robert remarks, his index finger covering your pinky.
His gray eyes, vibrant with emotion, gaze down at you. His hand, which trembles slightly, inches closer, reaching out as if to bridge the distance between you both. The vulnerability of his gesture resonates, and as his shaking hand comes to rest, his index finger covers your pinky with a delicate touch. The gesture is small yet intimate, a connection that transcends words and speaks volumes of your bond.
His comment surprises you, and a soft blush spreads across your cheeks like you were once eighteen, when in fact you are on the cusp of your eighteenth birthday. His candid compliment, his words like a gentle caress, evokes an adolescent flutter within you. You meet his gaze with a smile, your palm instinctively opening so that his warm hand can envelop yours. His touch is a balm against the uncertainties that linger, offering a sense of comfort and belonging that grounds you.
Laughter escapes your lips as you respond, your words light and teasing. "Thank you. And, I must say, you don't look too bad for an old man." The playful banter between you is a testament to the ease with which you converse, the shared moments of vulnerability building a bridge between the past and the present. In his presence, you find yourself rediscovering a sense of youthfulness, as if the weight of time and age fades away, leaving only the unfiltered connection that pulses between you.
The exchange is more than words; it affirms the unspoken understanding and attraction that weaves between your interactions. In this moment, the age gap that might have once seemed significant melts away, leaving only the genuine connection and shared emotions that unite you and Robert.
“What are you doing after this?”
“After this?”
“No, sweetling. After Virgina.”
You look at him and let out a dry chuckle, shrugging your shoulders. Your leg slightly shakes. You really don’t know.
Robert senses that, and contemplates his words for a second before speaking, all while holding your hand.
“Y/n. Come with me to Princeton.”
He turns his body towards you. A smile grows bigger on your face, and as you laugh, he grabs his hands and holds them close to his chest.
“I’m being serious. There’s a school you can teach English at if you wish when I’m at Princeton. I have a house there as well; we could both live quite comfortably,” Robert began to promise, “If that is what you wish. I promise I won’t be silent again, y/n.”
The weight of Robert's promise hangs in the air, each word a promise that dances on the precipice of your heart. His proposition carries both allure and uncertainty, a tantalizing glimpse into a future that might hold comfort and connection. The notion of teaching English at a school and living in a house by his side in Princeton sounds like a dream woven from the fabric of possibilities.
His hands, warm and steady, envelop yours in a gesture that feels both grounding and beseeching. His eyes, a reflection of his earnestness, search your face with an intensity that speaks of the depth of his commitment. His words carry a fervent sincerity, a vow to never repeat the silence that once separated you.
Yet, a tempest of emotions swirls within you, a whirlwind that tugs you in conflicting directions. The prospect he offers is appealing, a chance to share a life alongside him in a world of comfort and security. But the echo of past uncertainties lingers, a reminder that trust is a delicate thread that can easily fray.
His plea for your trust echoes through your mind, and you find yourself looking down, grappling with your own feelings and insecurities. The question of what you truly want, not just in this moment but in life, looms over you like a specter.
The struggle is both internal and profound, a reflection of the complexities that color your relationship with Robert. You love him, but could you truly love him?
As you seek an answer within the depths of your thoughts, his gaze remains unwavering, a testament to his patience and his desire for your understanding. And then, a sentence that breaks the silence.
"Marry me, then."
The words hang in the air like a suspended breath, each syllable laden with a weight that carries the potential to reshape your future. His proposal is unexpected and profound, a leap of faith that surpasses promises and stakes a claim on shared tomorrows. His intense and unwavering gaze meets yours as he waits for your response, his vulnerability laid bare.
In this moment, the path forward seems uncertain yet beckoning, a crossroads that holds the possibility of embracing love and commitment despite the hesitations that have held you back. The decision is yours to make, a choice that could rewrite the narrative of your connection with Robert, weaving together the threads of trust, uncertainty, and the profound desire to be known and cherished.
You’re silent, with your mouth in a o shape, thinking of what you should do. You think for a good while and look down, before looking right back at Robert. You’re not going to say yes–but you’re also not going to say no.
“There’s a courthouse down the block. I think it’s open until five on Saturdays.”
Robert is breathless and looks down in disbelief, before turning to look back at you. A spark of realization ignites within you two, the reality of the situation crystallizing in your mind. The choices before you are clear, and a surge of determination surges through you. Time is of the essence, and the chance to seize the future you both desire hangs in the balance.
“What’s the time?”
Through his tight and reassuring hold, you glance at your watch.
“4:35 pm.”
Robert smiles at you, and you smile back.
“Then we best should hurry, my bride.”

UUUUUUUH heres the one piece au/thing!!!! Ive got time skip designs for these guys so far but Im still figuring certain things out. Plus slight changes for when they enter the grandline but those are going thru a few revisions rn :d
Ive been having a loooooot of fun talking about this with my friend over on discord lol, it takes place roughly 300 years after Luffy’s story. Yoko, reincarnated Luffy himself, is the captain of the Smiling Pirates. Theres also Oppie, a descendant of Usopp, very book and sailing smart, the crew’s navigator. Greer is a military pilot, a talented shooter with impeccable aim, Nami’s descendant. Both Silas and Mamoru are descendants of Zoro and Sanji(we ship zosan, we’re having some cringe fun lol) cousins with differing personalities ut shared trauma. Silas learned to fight defending his family farm, hes the crew’s cook. And Mamoru has possible brain damage from using his head one too many times— literally. Trained boxer and in deep debt.
More stuff to em but i dont wanna put it all in one post, but there are more crew members/characters under the cut!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In order:
1) Silphion is the crew’s doctor, Mint is his late daughter. Fin is the bunny. I wanna show him off now, but I wanna draw some stuff for their story :)
2) “Captain” Hopper* of the Jasmine crew. He’s Yoko self proclaimed enemy. He doesnt have his own crew, unless you count the puppy dog and guinie pig. Got a high bounty from a mistake with cannon trajectory ending in the marines calling him Huggy the pyromaniac. Cant confirm if hes a descendant of Buggy or related in some other way. Cries more than he fights. Not taken seriously by anyone around him. Theres sooooo much more I wanna say but hnnnnngh I cant rnnnnnn
3) Oppie’s dad Auden. Joined the marines for the free boat. Not serious about it, literally got thru everything just for the boat. Only desire was to get to chill on the open water. BUT dont underestimate him, Auden is a marine captain and not canned for a reason. Never was around for Oppie for long but sends gifts thru the mail all the time. Its not his fault, his ex is just a huge jerk :( literally just wants to cloud gaze, dont tell him to go catch his pirates…
*Hopper IS NOT his final name, its his stand in name for now. Probably. I havent found a better name yet lol

Don't know how useful this is for our author as it's a rather specific one - but the yacht crew I was on used to call our day trip passengers 'oppies'. Started as a joke because most of us learnt to sail in optimist dinghies - which are designed to be sailed solo without assistance so it's the crew sailing oppies for the day. Really stuck after this one very lovely but very loud lady kept thanking all of us for the opportunity and someone replies with 'oppies like this are rare.' and she was delighted thinking she'd just learnt some fun new slang for opportunity.
thanks! @purlturtle
And oh yeah that's something to tap into - nicknames or not, there's almost no crew who's been working together more than a few weeks that doesn't have a dense, indecipherable tangle of injokes and weird boat-specific slang. Off the top of my head, from various previous crews of mine -
shit yeah boy howdy
don't let's be churlish
dumpy-ass furls
describing foggy days as 'juicy'
beauty movement (praise)
schoonin' real good real hard real sweet
get her up on a plaaaane bub
the whole pickle Thing
lying to passengers about our personal backstories
old galen the murderous lobsterman
fair winds dick!
None of which are necessarily funny out of context (or even in it) but all of which contributed to and came from each particular crews' very specific ?culture, I guess?, which inevitably grew increasingly opaque to non-crew as the season wore on.
And all of them are now completely gone, since those shipmates have scattered to other boats. It's strange to think no one on Bagheera now knows the local night heron was named Steve, or remembers the reason we were so passive aggressive to one particular lobster boat on the radio, and the pickle was (understandably) tossed out by the new captain, and there's no one celebrating Fisherman Friendship Fridays anymore.

I have been seized by the desire to look for dinghy sailing content on tumblr and I am struggling, because the sailing tag is mostly enormous ships, and I can't search for any specific boat individually because they all have stupid names and all the posts I've found tag 'sailing' and the type of boat separately.
Like sure man, I'll try looking through the 'laser' tag, I'm sure I will find entirely boats and no laser beams at all. One of the boats I found a few posts about is called a 420. Do you see why this might be a problem? I haven't even dared to look in the topper tag. (which is the boat I mostly sail)
The only boat I can find a consistent amount of content for is oppies. The problem with this is that oppies suck. They are wooden boxes you put your 8 year old in so they can sail. Most people over the age of 13 do not fit in one. I hate them.
Anyway if anyone who sees this wants to talk about boats I am willing to interact.

'It’s probably for the best that the release of Dune Part 2 has been pushed back until March of next year. I mean, if you had a major blockbuster like that starring Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet would you want it to premiere without stars doing publicity? The move also means Barbie will likely dominate the crafts with less competition from friendly fire. That is, with the exception of Visual Effects, which might have been Dune 2’s to lose. The thing is, though, Oppenheimer’s visual effects will likely win, considering they’re practical and astonishing...
There is nothing wrong with CGI, particularly, but come on. Practical effects for the win. The voters must be made aware of how exceptional the work is — they can’t just lazy-vote this category on the basis of “that looks neat!” They have to be TOLD what a big deal all of this is. If the Oscar team do that, Oppie should sail through this category for the win...
Barbie’s success is remarkable, as is Oppenheimer’s. But did you ever think Sound of Freedom would top Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny?...
Killers of the Flower Moon is very much a film that sits in exactly the right place for the modern-day Left – it confirms how vicious and malicious so many white people were to Native Americans in this country as recently as 100 years ago. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer pushes back somewhat against the kind of authoritarianism we see on the rise — thought policing, censorship, expanded political powers, and witch-hunt-like paranoia. It isn’t that it’s only on the Left, it’s just that the Left has all of the power and they’re using it to their full advantage, which has choked the life out of art...
Having film critics and Oscar voters measure success only works if they aren’t insulated from the rest of life on the outside, which is where we find ourselves today.
On the other hand, there stands Barbenheimer to prove me wrong. Two films that popped unexpectedly and created a cultural phenoms unto themselves that everyone felt excited about participating in. Just in time for the crippling strike.

Humans are Space Orcs “Curiosity”
Report ID 2241571
Author Krill
*long silence, shuffling of papers.*
You know, after all these reports, all this anger, and….. Confusion… I can finally say that I have found something that I find quite… beautiful about humans.
It isn’t much in the way of how they behave, how they move, what they do, but more about how they feel, how they think... Did you know that humans have spent thousands of years naming star formations, even before they knew what stars were, they saw pictures in the sky, and named them….creating stories for them. Even on the ground with no possibility of making it to the stars, they still looked up.
Did you know that the humans had detailed maps of their moon and the neighboring planet Mars before they had detailed maps of the ocean sea floor? It’s like there is something out there that’s pulling them further and further away from Earth. They never WATNTED to go under sea as much as they wanted to go into the stars.
The truth is apparent in the words they use when naming their spacecraft, sure they could name them space 1, 2 and 3 (And they often did) but sometimes they had other names.
A.    Explorer = A human word defining a person who goes into unknown territory on purpose simply to learn things about it…an adventurer.
B.    Pioneer = A person who is the first to explore or settle a new area.
C.    Ranger = A person that ranges wide over a large area
D.    Scout = A person that goes ahead to gather information
E.    Mariner = someone who sails on body of water
F.    Hitchhiker = someone who catches a ride with someone else to get to a specific destination, or just to travel.
G.   Surveyor = Someone who investigates or examines something
H.    Sojourner = person who stays someone temporarily
I.      Pathfinder = someone who finds the way
J.     Challenger = a rival or someone who engages another in a contest. (Humans will never stop their quest to the stars….. no matter the cost…. The terrible…. Terrible…. Cost.
K.    Messenger = someone who brings a message or information to another
L.    Voyager = from the word voyage which means to take a long journey by sea or (now) by space.
Can’t you see, how they throw their own attributes onto machines, naming them after humans that had done the same, despite the fact that no human would be capable of preforming this mission? They place their hopes and dreams onto a machine and thrust it into space hoping beyond hope that they will find something out there as they stare at the same set of stars they have watched for thousands of years
They have been fascinated by the power of space in such a way that their own mythology named the stars, dubbing them in the name of their gods, first their planets, than their missions.
a.     Titan =  The fathers of their gods
b.    Atlas = a Titan who held the sky on his shoulders
c.     Apollo = the god who pulled the sun across the sky
d.    Phoenix = a mythological bird made of fire who, when stricken by death, rose from the ashes. (Not so different form the humans rising from the ashes of war to rebuild when they would have been destroyed)
e.    Pegasus = a mythological winged horse. A creature that should never have possessed wings (a little like the humans I think.)
Every moment, the humans have spent naming their hopes and their dreams without even knowing it, connecting their discoveries to themselves, to their long dead gods (not dead because they haven’t been forgotten.
a.     Odyssey from the name Odysseus, from an ancient human epic detailing the spiritual quest of a man attempting to return home from long years at war.
b.    Discovery = to find something new that no one has ever seen before.
c.     Curiosity = the desire to learn about soemthing simply for the sake of learning, to know, and to understand it (even if that means launching yourself into space with the potential of never coming home)
d.    Opportunity = a set of good circumstances which make it possible to do something. (perhaps to survive years longer than one technically should have)
Did you know the humans send songs to their rovers? Or they used to, even though the metal will never truly understand the meaning, they still send their transmissions supporting a lifeless thing as if it were human, and eventually saying goodbye.
And then they started to travel themselves conquering their nearest planets on ships, no longer relying on metal, but on themselves.
a.     Survivor = a person who defied odds that should have killed them
b.    Seeker = someone who looks for something
c.     Honor = respect
d.    Hope = a desire for things to be better tomorrow.
e.    Enterprise = a difficult undertaking or project (A callback to a hope humans have harbored for many years, when they could only daydream about interstellar travel) Enterprise was the first interstellar spacecraft)
At the core of every species, there is an attribute that wins out above all others, For the Vrul, it is logic, for the Rundi, it is peace, For the Drev it is persistence, but for the humans…. it is their inner curiosity, their wonder.
*…*
*…*
And then there is the asshole who named his ship USS Stabby.
*laughter*
Sorry I was a little late Oppy, Promise I was thinking of you :)

Choppy, sloshing waves toss the sail boat moored in the turbulent harbor.
Fiberglass hull squealing but keel keeping a semblance of balance. Boats are built to withstand weather.
Below deck, drowning in my thoughts.
stumbling and pushing on the wall like a drunkard - I look out the porthole.
A man on the docks kneels at a tripod under smokey clouds, camera aimed at the darkening water
And me, just another piece of the scenery.

Another day, another bay.. Reflections on the Balearics
23 August 2017
We’re now in Estepona, in a marina for a couple of days, meeting up with some friends of Mike’s from the ‘old’ days when he used to work. We took them out on the boat, but broke all known seasickness records, inducing projectile mal-de-mer in child 2 in flat calm in under 40 minutes. Hey ho. Child 1, manfully unaffected by said mal-de-mer, made a good job of steering, taking the boat into the wind to get sails up and down, and holding a course under motor.
I flew home for Mum’s 80th, a lovely ‘do’ in a country pub, with all the family there. Good to see everyone. Rushed up to London to see Shirley for lunch, to sort our post, and to have a quick look at a house Rachel and Nathan might buy. The usual hateful petty humilations through the airport, this time including being left shoeless and blinded; some jobsworth having demanded I remove my (prescription) sunglasses, leaving me standing shortsightedly in the middle of the space, unable to locate my tray.
Mike had moved the boat to Porto Christo for my return, and we had a nice meal out for his birthday, before setting off for Gibraltar. The new Birkenstocks I bought for him on a rainy day in Colchester, fit fine. Managed to persuade him to bin the old ones. Hooray. Also bought some for myself, to replace the ones Rachel had bought me, which I loved. Shoes which fit me! Drum Roll! TaDah!
The Balearics are already fading in memory - some wonderful days, some stunning scenery, lots of time spent with friends, some interesting trips - but ultimately I feel the balearics are now ‘done’, and I currently have no great interest in returning in the future. Perhaps it is the ‘small(ish) island’ effect - the local culture, such as it is, has been diluted and distorted by the massive influx of tourism, and holds only limited interest and attraction.
The Palma Bay motorboat set especially are best avoided - arrogant, noisy, rude, and in the smaller boats often incompetent. Being near them is stressful, and their spending power is so absurd, just by being there they make everything more expensive. We had a chat with one motorboater - lives on his 45′ £400,000 boat, paying £18000 a year for a marina space for it. He doesn’t take it out much because ‘the (40HP Williams) rib is more fun’. The main boat did ONE engine hour last year. ONE!? The annual service for his engines (twin outdrives, about 250 litres per hour at full chat) cost him £10,000. No wonder the marinas and swindleries are uninterested in our miserable little requirements.
I’m sure there is more there to discover, but where I would happily return to the Baltic, or the atlantic coast of northern Spain, I would not rush back to the balearics. Fine for a week or so, but lacking depth for longer. There is an interesting history to all the islands, but after the excellence of the offering in Cartagena, the presentation of Spanish history elsewhere in Spain is pretty much non-existent. There are ruins on Minorca which are apparently over 3000 years old, but with nothing more than a blip on a map - no signs, no information, indifferent access - it takes more determination than either of us have to sustain an interest in tracking more of them down. We did look out some of them when we visited while on Wally’s boat a year or so back; the caves on the north coast were particularly good.
Wally’s boat, incidentally, is exactly where we left it, and is now effectively derelict. As predicted, sadly. Poor little boat.
We have had a few cracking sails since the last post, and have done several longish legs; Minorca to Mallorca, then Ibiza, then the Mar Menor (more below), a short hop to Cartagena, then a long one to Cabo de Gata to the absurdly overpriced and under-resourced marina at San Jose. Another long one to Estepona, the first 24 hours in cracking winds, averaging 7 knots with following winds and a pleasant helpful swell, then 12 hours motoring in little or no wind.
The anchorage outside the Mar Menor is a truly bizarre place; somebody spent a lot of money piling a maze of piers for a large marina, and the project was then abandoned. The pilings are now rusting away, but provide excellent shelter from all directions, if a slightly Mad-Max-on-water atmosphere, with no access to the shore, conversations from unseen fishermen rolling out from the banks, and water sloshing in and out through the rust holes in the piling.
We stopped off in Cartagena, for fuel as much as anything else - the 12 hour motor having hammered our reserves. It was lovely, meeting up with some old friends, and surprisingly nostalgic revisiting some favoured winter haunts. We spent a lovely evening with Neil and Gail on Gleda, a wharram catamaran Neil built himself. Link to Neil’s blog:  http://thegledaproject.com - well worth a read.
We donated the Oppy to them, as we can’t take it with us any further, and I didn’t want to abandon it somewhere where somebody might find it and imagine it more capable than it is, and get themselves into trouble. It has been huge fun having it, and loads of people have had a go in it, especially various children last winter, and I was sorry to see it go.
The list of winter jobs now covers two foolscap pages, that’s four columns single spaced. Mostly trivial, some less so, and some go-nowhere-til-fixed. Top of the list: the AIS power supply has packed up. (AIS allows us to see nearby ships through fog and darkness, with much more accuracy and information than radar.  It also has a ‘stalking’ app, which allows you to track where we are via the internet. For any who have not yet found it - go to ‘vesselfinder’ on the internet, and type in the boat name.) Replacement for the power supply is currently looking like a very reasonable £20, but there is the usual drama of ordering stuff for delivery to a non-residential address. Hey ho. First world problems.
Tomorrow we head off to Gibraltar, to make a start on the list of jobs.

Nabokov is a primal attention seeker. Nowadays searching engines won’t recognize it as an “ы” substitute, that’s the obstacle if I should wish to to adopt this Nabokovian practice (of all Nabokov’s legacy). On the English-language (skewed) keyboards “ï” is as gloriously absent as “ы” itself.

(as such, dare I add, it is a completely patriarchal role. there seems to be no escape for women; inevitably they’d perform the overarching structures of patriarchy by their very existence.)

______________________ *or I am stuck (Rus) **translation is of course mine but there is not much to translate to be fair, this line, which gave rise to the numerous parodies in Russian literature, is exactly “императрикс Екатерина, о!” it sounds very twenty-first century, if you ask me. Trediakovsky belonged to the period when literary Russian was brewing and melting and was about to be wrought into paragons of gorgeous smithery. Trediakovsky undoubtedly belonged to the circles of modernists which were to emerge much later.
