OPPO launches budget smartphone A12 in India, price starts at Rs 9,990

Technology News Chinese smartphone maker OPPO on Monday launched new budget smartphone A12 at a starting price of Rs 9,990 (3/32GB variant) in India. The 4/64GB variant will be available for Rs 11,490.

The devices will be available across offline stores and on leading e-commerce platforms, starting June 10, in two colour options, blue and black. The company also announced some launch where users would get six months of extended warranty on the purchase of latest smartphone (valid till June 21).

The handset comes with a 6.22-inch waterdrop screen with 1520x720 pixel resolution. The display offers 89 per cent screen-to-body ratio and has an aspect ratio of 19:9, and it is equipped with a 3D Diamond Blaze design on the back.

Oppo A12 smartphone is rumoured to be the successor of Oppo A11 that was introduced in October 2019. It is also expected to be a budget smartphone by the Chinese tech company. The Oppo A12 phone, along with another rumoured device – Oppo A12e – have been doing rounds of the Internet for some time and last month, the former was even spotted on a certification website. Now a new report has suggested that Oppo A12 will be released in 3GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB storage variants. The report has further highlighted a slew of features of the rumoured smartphone along with its alleged renders. Since Oppo has not confirmed the launch of the smartphone, it advised taking this information with a pinch of salt.

As per a report by Pricebaba citing notable tipster Ishan Agarwal, the rumoured Oppo A12 will be powered by MediaTek’s Helio P35 processor, coupled with 4,230mAh battery. The tipster has also shared the alleged front and back panel renders of the smartphone that show a waterdrop notch display, rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and dual rear camera setup.

The report claims that the rumoured Oppo A12 will come with a 6.22-inch HD+ resolution display. The phone is also said to have a polycarbonate body, featuring a diamond pattern on the back. Moreover, the phone will reportedly weigh 165 grams and measure 155.9×75.5×8.3mm.

It is further reported that the smartphone will offer a 5-megapixel sensor along with an f/2.0 lens on the front. On the back, the phone is said to have a 13-megapixel primary image sensor with an f/2.2 lens, accompanied by a 2-megapixel secondary sensor with an f/2.4 lens.

Lastly, Pricebaba claims that Oppo A12 will run on ColorOS 6.1.2 out-of-the-box.

The latest report, however, does not include the price of the rumoured Oppo A12. It is also important to note that its predecessor, Oppo A11 was not launched in India.

OnePlus launched the latest smartphone, OnePlust 7T, last week. It brings to the table some smart upgrades over its predecessor, OnePlus 7 (Review), and also borrows the USP of the more expensive OnePlus 7 Pro (Review). Yes, I am talking about the 90 Hz display.

The OnePlus 7T now sports a 6.55-inch Full HD+ Fluid AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels and a 90Hz refresh rate. The processor has also been bumped up to a marginally faster Snapdragon 855+.

The rear camera module design seems heavily inspired by certain Motorola phones, and if my memory serves me right, I remember Carl Pei mentioned in his presentation that imitation is the best form of flattery. Not sure, but maybe he was thanking Motorola. Design aside, at least the company has opted for the right kind of lenses. Thankfully, they haven’t yet fallen for the marketing jazz of quad cameras or more and have opted for three that can handle some key aspects of photography including ultra-wide angle shots and optical zoom.

While all the upgrades leave you with little reason to buy the previous OnePlus phones (unless they are heavily discounted), there are a bunch of other phones you should strongly consider before investing your Rs 40,000 in the OnePlus 7T. Let’s see what these phones have to offer.

While these modestly spec’d phones from Google do not boast of several fancy features that the 7T offers, they do offer one of the best cameras around that does a phenomenal job in all conditions, and especially in low light where most phones struggle. And believe it or not, it has a single camera at the back that does the job.

If you are seeking a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 based phone at a significantly lower cost than the OnePlus, here’s a Xiaomi phone that fits the bill to perfection. The Redmi K20 Pro (Review) is powered by a Snapdragon 855 SoC and its 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage variant sells for a good Rs 9,000 lower than the OnePlus 7T, or even 4K lower than the OnePlus 7.

Apple seems to be warming up to the idea of actually selling more phones in India than just flaunting them. The Apple iPhone XR (Review) has been flirting with the Rs 40,000 mark in the ongoing Amazon and Flipkart sales. That’s right, not some five generations old relic that Apple looks to dump in this part of the world but one generation old iPhone for close to 40K! Now that’s a pretty good entry point into the iOS ecosystem.

The iPhone XR, though a stripped-down version of its more illustrious (and very expensive) siblings, offers plenty to justify its new price tag. The single 12 MP camera supports optical image stabilisation and captures excellent shots in most lighting conditions.

Oppo A12e is rumoured to be the upcoming budget smartphone by Oppo. The development was shared by a tech website in partnership with a regular tipster on Thursday. If true, the Oppo A12e could be the next smartphone in the Oppo A-series, following the launch of Oppo A11 in China last year. Since the Oppo A11 was never launched in India, the chances for the latest rumoured smartphone to arrive in the country aren’t very high. Some reports have also suggested the launch of Oppo A12 along with Oppo A12e. However, many specifications of the said smartphone are unknown.

As per a report by 91Mobiles citing tipster Ishan Agarwal, Oppo A12e will come in Black, Purple, and Red colour options. Since the phone is rumoured to be a budget smartphone, it’s likely that Oppo will use polycarbonate material for the body. Moving to the display, the report added that there could be a waterdrop notch IPS display with HD+ resolution. Moreover, the phone is expected to measure 156.2mm75.6mm×8.2mm and weigh 170 grams.

Under the hood, Oppo A12e is rumoured to come with 3GB RAM and 64GB storage which is further expandable via microSD card. The phone is said to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC and pack a 4,230mAh battery with no fast-charging support. In terms of camera, the report claims there will be a dual rear camera setup that will include a 13-megapixel primary sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor with f/2.4 aperture. It is speculated that Oppo A12e will have an 8-megapixel front camera.

It is unclear what version of Android operating system we can see on the rumoured smartphone.

The latest report does not include the expected price of Oppo A12e. However, by looking back at Oppo A11, we can expect the phone to cost somewhere around Rs. 15,000.

The report is also speculating the launch of Oppo A12 along with Oppo A12e. Citing a Geekbench listing, the report states that the Oppo A12 will come with MediaTek Helio P35 SoC, 3GB RAM and Android 9.0 Pie with ColorOS 6.0.1 custom skin on top.

In the meanwhile, the Oppo A12 was spotted on Singapore’s certification website IMDA, with a few details about its connectivity options.
