Scents
He still remembers the scent of his mother. sometimes, when he misses her, he puts his face in a piece of her old clothes and takes a deep breath as if he really feels her presence. the smell of wet soil, flowers, foods. her scent is sad just like her smile and her eyes. but it calms him down. and he also remembers Yeon's scent. like when he was younger and when she saw him in their house, she hugged him tightly, when she had a seizure, and when she wanted to go forward to protect Seon-ho, but he hugged her. then he touches and smells her silk ribbon and misses her even more. she smells like spring flowers. maybe a little like his mother's scent. or this has always been Seon-ho's illusion for remembering her. he remembers that when he was next to Hwi, he always smelled of food and blacksmithing. now Hwi only smells blood and this make Seon-ho sad. Hwi is alive but Seon-ho has to search his scent in past. that's sad and terrible. he still remembers. others think he drinks or goes to the opium den to forget. but when he drinks, when the poppy seed smoke mixes with his breath, he can more easily feel their presence around him. it's as if smells become stronger and he can see and hear things buried in the past. he's pathetic. he knows it himself, but sometimes the longing puts so much pressure on him that he has no other choice. so when he moves his hand, sometimes he feels that something warm and soft touches it other than emptiness. he doesn't know who it's for. Yeon's small hand or his mother's rough hand. he's ready to pay everything for those few seconds. for someone to gently hold him in warm arms and let him sleep forever.

He’s not wrong, Yeon.
First it was Ah-eum (to the point of abandoning your family and then, opium addiction) and thenJi-ah(to the point of letting countless innocents die so you can keep her alive).
You never really cared for your baby bro until you lost him. And even after that, you mourned him for like 5 seconds before getting all sickeningly sappy with your human.
As for me, I’m listening to “The brothers” in a loop and it’s only making me tear up even more.

TALE OF THE NINE-TAILED 1938
GENRES: Historical, Drama, Comedy
SUMMARY: Magically, Lee Yeon finds himself in 1938 tracking down a stone for Taluipa to secure the fate of the current world. There he meets that era’s Lee Rang, some of his long lost mountain god pals, and some closure for the tragedies he’s suffered…and caused.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Lucky babies, soul stealers, opium addicts, revolutionary freedom fighters, mermaids, loyal gisaengs, tailored suits, historical glow-ups, puffed rice, broken combs, trickster tigers, murderous Japanese imperialists, bandit gangs, zombies, shinigami, and more gods than you ever thought possible.
HOT TAKE: I can't tell you enough how happy I am to be reunited with this amazing crew. It's been far too long and now that the show is over I miss them like crazy all over again. FYI: I never want to see Kim Beom in anything but a 3-piece suit with an undercut hairstyle, ever again.
Be careful what subplots you invest yourself in while you watch, fam. There are a LOT of them and not all of them get their due follow-through.

okay, so here's some more that I missed:
(more underneath the cut)
Firstly, a very unorganized assortment of mctna metas I love: here by an anon & @rain-hat (Seon-ho & Seonrok), here (Seonrok early interactions) + here about the post-ep. 12 opium den scene (Seonhwi) + here about Seon-ho & his scars (Seonrok & Seonhwi) by @hedvig-ulrika, here is more about scars (Hwi's vs. Seon-ho's) by @nichester & @thenotsosecretbits, here @blueberry-cheese-pizza raises a really good question for ep. 7, this Seon-ho blorbo rating by @convenientalias, this feelsy text caption by @lethal-desires under their ep. 12 gifset, this very good web weaving (with a parallel between Banghwi & Seonhwi) by evakant, this one by @tlanwen, this heartfelt appeal for more people to watch mctna by @apocketfullofhobbits, this assessment of the relationships in mctna (love/unrequited love/hate) by @mctna that I find sums it up really well; @fulltimehabibti & @utterlyhooked have a lot of meta in their respective 'my country the new age' tags too.
These hilarious mctna reactions/memes: here by @winteams and here by @devil-breaker. These two by @wizardslizards are a classic! Then there is this Sung-rok one by @bienmoreau, this one by @pendraegon (they also have an 'ellian's mctna lb' liveblog tag), and here is some very funny, well-deserved Nam Jeon hate by @crying-crow and @eight-of-cups.
Rewatches: @winteams did one recently and has an 'mctna rewatch' tag, though most of the posts you'll have to search for in the 'k.txt' tag. @baek1nho did a rewatch two months ago, not sure if she had a tag for that, and @convenientalias did one back in April with very meaty and delicious reviews/thoughts for you to dig your teeth into!
Seon-ho & Yeon meta: I can only recall this post by @navramanan right now... but I'm sure you'll find more by @iskarieot (really entertaining reactions in the tags for 'my country the new age' posts in general) or @rotblut (has a 'you make flowers grow' tag for them) - aside from their respective beautiful graphics & gifsets which you should def check out too - who were/are big shippers of them.
Bang-won meta: here and here by @navramanan, this funny exchange between @navramanan & @afroasiamerican, this rec (of a very sexy Bang-won fanvid) by @drivingsideways with comments/discussions about mctna and other characters like Seon-ho or Hwi in the notes (but be warned, it's rather Hwi-negative). In this post @utterlyhooked and more people are losing their minds over that same fanvid and Bang-won + his fan too, and this post about the historical person is a hilarious must-read for any Bang-won fan!
Lady Min/Queen Wongyeong (Bang-won's historical wife) meta: she did not actually appear in the show, but @bending-sickle would have loved to see her in mctna and shares a few facts about Bang-won & her here, and @rain-hat wove a compelling version of her into an amazing Seon-ho/Bang-won ficlet, sparking an interesting discussion in the notes between @rain-hat & @angryteapott about how Hwi took over parts of Queen Wongyeong's role + how there should have been more women in mctna in general. Also, here are more of @rain-hat 's thoughts about Bang-won & Lady Min + concubinage/polygamy in Goryeo + some comparisons of mctna to Six Flying Dragons.
Bang-won & Seon-ho meta: this exchange between @navramanan & @afroasiamerican, this meta by @navramanan, thoughts about Seon-ho/Bang-won + playful by @convenientalias that I really love to read and reread. I also rediscovered this interesting conversation (most of it in the tags) @eohachu & I had about Bang-won & Seon-ho and how these two aren't the only 'antagonistic soulmates' in mctna. Fatallist saw them as swordmates too (iirc) and def had a lot of good posts/playlists/web weavings about swordmates in general (for mctna & other media), such as this or this (@fulltimehabibti has reblogged most of the other parts of that swordmates series, I think). Also @hedvig-ulrika has this swordmates post (Seonhwi).
I have just gotten in mctna clearly very late to the party. Thank you for all the beautiful gifs. ❤️❤️❤️🍑
I just wanted to know if you knew any meta posts or discussions about the characters out there I can delve into?
Yaaay, welcome, welcome, we are always happy (starved) for fresh blood in the fandom! \o/ 💙💙💙 Ahhh sdjfklsdflsfd thank you for paying attention to my gifs and calling them beautiful!! 🥰 *dances in a circle like an overexcited puppy*
Please beware: these are most likely not spoiler-free!
For the older meta/discussions, @convenientalias and her ‘my country the new age’ tag (starts at page 20) is a good place to start. I remember this Seon-ho meta and also love reading everyone's responses to this mctna list of questions she created. There’s @dangermousie and their ‘my country’ tag (starts at page 11), @hedvig-ulrika has a lot of good meta posts as well, right now I can only think of this one (marketplace scene) and this one (Seonhwi scene towards the end), and this one for Seon-ho & Sung-rok. For Seonrok stuff in general, platonic or otherwise, the ‘seonrok’ tag by @pashminabitch is a treasure trove, @sadviper has great thoughts about them too (and I enjoyed reading their top 5 mctna scenes), @valarinde has meta about this very heart-wrenching scene, and @eohachu has written compelling meta about them too; their ‘seonrok’ and ‘nn meta’ tags are def worth checking out. @strandedchesspiece has an amazing series of mctna meta posts. I really love @the2headedcalf ’s Seonhwi meta (1, 2). @ciriwrites has written this excellent meta that led to an interesting discussion and other meta, @staidwaters has this headcanon about how Seonhwi became best friends, and @rain-hat has a lot of intelligent and eloquent meta in her ‘my country the new age’ tag and got a lot of mctna asks a while ago. You can also read @crayonflop 's very entertaining commentary in their ‘my country’ tag (starts at page 28), then there’s @husberttee with an interesting discussion about Sung-rok and his scar. This funny text post about Sung-rok + Seonhwi by @petekaos always makes me smile. This one is good too - all the Seon-ho feels! @bienmoreau has meta posts like this one about Seon-ho and his brother and @tlanwen has good meta and web weavings too. And @elderflowergin 's description of Bang-won's voice is perfect. There are others like @crithir, @eremin0109, @asena-queenslayer, @monstersqueen, @mctna, @doorhine with a scene comparison here and dozens of others who I remember writing mctna meta, in the tags or otherwise! This anon ask sent to fatallist (who has sadly deactivated) about the water/river symbolism is interesting too.
For more recent stuff, we have @howlingmusketeers ’s Bang-won meta, @nubreed73 ’s thought-provoking commentary here (you can find more in their ‘meta’ or ‘my country the new age’ tag), @wangkuans here (there's more in their ‘my country the new age’ tag too), @navramanan has this edit/tags-meta and meta, and @itsza recently watched mctna and has made some posts too.
Of course, you can also feel free to check out my ‘mctna meta’ tag or ‘color meta’ tag! :D
I’m sure I missed a lot of the early discussions since I only discovered the fandom a year after mctna was airing... Please forgive me, friends, if I missed anyone /o\
A small caveat: I’m very clearly biased towards Seon-ho who's my fave, and there are some Hwi-resenting meta posts/tags you may encounter on my or other people’s blogs. I started out being quite critical of him, but after many good discussions with some of my friends I’ve come to understand his side of things more. As such, I'm trying to avoid being too harsh on him and am determined to love the boys more equally now!
There are a few critical takes on Seon-ho or Bang-won or Hui-jae too, but I think it’s a sign of what amazing, complex characters they are that they elicit such strong emotions in us and we feel compelled to take sides!
Thank you for the ask and have fun in the mctna fandom!! <333
#my country the new age#mctna meta#mctna meta masterlist#i swear this is the last addition for now...#/o\#this very fun compilation ate my brain too much and now i gotta focus on all my procrastinated uni assignments sfhjkhdfjk#but will def respond to everyone later on tonight or tomorrow evening#and also gush over all the beautiful creations people tagged me in!!#plz wait for me!!!!

I'm greedy, I want all the fic meme questions for Time Travelling Juice (seonho/sungrok) and for Long Car Rides (jo yeong/shinjae)!!
Oho. Yes. I could definitely ramble about those. (Also this post is long, so I'm adding a cut.)
Time Travelling Juice, for those not in the know, is the Sung-rok/Seon-ho time travel fix it fic I wrote. It's like 40k so I can admit I put some effort into it.
☼: how i came up with the idea-- The first seed wasn't actually a time travel fic. You see, when Seon-ho said to Sung-rok in the burning house that he was going to be a ruler of darkness I kind of thought he meant they were going to become bandits together or something. So I was like "AU where they really do run off to become bandits together." But then I was like "an IC Seon-ho will never abandon politics until he's used up his very last chance bc he's too damn ambitious". Then I was like "the only Seon-ho who wants to just go chill with the ppl he loves is Seon-ho the week he dies. and Sung-rok doesn't even really get to see that Seon-ho. Tragic." So then I was like "AU where dead Seon-ho does a Peggy Sue but also Sung-rok comes along and they Run Away and Become Bandits."
The fix-it aspect of this fic and the political intrigue etc that make up the majority of the fic were kind of incidental lols. Bc even in a second life, Seon-ho isn't going to just drop things that easily.
I also thought Sung-rok deserved a chance to yell at Seon-ho for only surviving him by a couple days. ☄: what the writing process was like-- Pretty typical. I made an outline for like. A long oneshot or a twoshot or a threeshot or something. Then I realized there was too much plot for that when I'd written a whole chapter and nothing had happened except Sung-rok time traveling. So I went on, reoutlining and reoutlining as inevitably chapters didn't cover as much ground as planned, until eventually I reached the ending. ✄: something i deleted before the final draft-- I don't think I deleted anything I actually wrote, or at least nothing too major, but in my initial outline Seon-ho was going to kind of kidnap Yeon when he ran away (for her protection, of course) and also possibly kidnap Bang-seok (to prevent his future murder). The latter would have been hilarious bc of how much Sung-rok would have objected to it on grounds of practicality. Unfortunately Sung-rok was right so that plot point had to be abandoned. ♡: my favorite part-- uhhhh this bar scene of pining and time travel reflections:
“Do you know,” he said, “none of the workers here recognize me?”
“Hurt your pride?”
“Don’t be stupid. You know what I mean.”
Sung-rok did know what he meant. After Yeon’s death, after Seon-ho had come here a number of times, a couple of the servers had known his name, as had the proprietor. They’d known Sung-rok, too, as the man who came to drag him out. They hadn’t particularly liked either one of them less. Seon-ho was a paying customer but he worked for the government and could easily be trouble. Sung-rok clearly hated the place but he got Seon-ho out before Seon-ho could get too drunk and troublesome. In short, their attitude had been solidly neutral. But if it had been an ambivalent relationship, there had been a relationship nonetheless, now erased.
“You’ve never been here,” Sung-rok said, “and in the future, we won’t come here again.”
Seon-ho turned and smiled at him. “So resolute. Sung-rok, you know, it doesn’t matter. My body has never been here. It’s never tried opium either. But I still know the high, and I still know this place. Turning back time doesn’t make me clean.”
“If it doesn’t,” Sung-rok said, “then I will.” He met Seon-ho’s gaze evenly. “In this life, you’ll never run to drink or to smoke. You’ll never so much as want to. I will never allow you to be hurt again.” ☠: something i found challenging-- It was kind of hard to balance the different kinds of fix-it-ing I wanted to be doing. Like on the one hand, I wanted Seon-ho to cut all his political and familial ties. On the other hand, he had to settle some things with Yeon and Hwi. And on a third hand, I really just wanted to be writing a Sung-rok/Seon-ho slow burn but I'm honestly much more of a fast-burn writer. And I was kind of trying to at least touch on of each of these things (1. politics and plotting 2. Yeon and Hwi 3. Sung-rok romance) in each chapter, which was kind of a lot to handle. ☾: how i thought people would respond to the fic-- Wasn't expecting it to be super popular bc Sung-rok is a minor character. But ppl like time travel, so I still expected some readers :) ☽: how people *actually* responded-- It got a bit more attention than I expected, and I had a few regular commenters, so that was nice. ∞: something i wish i’d done differently-- Well now I kind of wish that Yeon HAD run off with Seon-ho and Sung-rok but I also think she and Hwi should be together and forcing Hwi and Sung-rok to hang out for a prolonged period of time would be a disaster so. I guess I don't really wish I'd done that.
★: something i’m proud to have accomplished-- I think this is still the only multi-chapter Sung-rok/Seon-ho fic on AO3, so that's cool. And possibly the fandom's only time travel fic? We have some reincarnation fic which is kind of similar but a Peggy Sue fix-it is a specific genre and I don't think there are any other MCTNA Peggy Sues.
Long Car Rides is a Jo Yeong/Kang Sin-jae fic where the two go on a trip to Haenam to investigate a lead on Lee Lim's organization. Shippy happenings ensue.
☼: how i came up with the idea-- This was an exchange fic for chiiyo86. They mentioned liking casefic. I can't remember how I got from there to "also there should be a road trip" but I'm sure there was some logic behind it. ☄: what the writing process was like-- Brainstorming based off chiiyo86's letter, writing an outline, writing the fic. Pretty simple. ✄: something i deleted before the final draft-- Again I don't think I deleted anything I actually wrote but due to circumstances I had to scrap forcing a "there was only one bed" situation. Great tragedy for me. ♡: my favorite part-- Yeong getting petty bc he wants Sin-jae to pay for their not-date. (If Sin-jae pays... maybe it's a date???)
“You’ll pay for Jo Eun-sup’s chicken but not for mine?” Yeong leaned back in his seat, smile turning to scowl. “Why not pay for it? It’s on sale.”
Sin-jae stared at him. “…are you actually that cheap?”
“Cheap?” Yeong’s scowl intensified. “I’ve been making and buying you coffee for months now.”
“Wait, that was supposed to be some sort of quid pro quo? I thought it was…” He’d really just thought it was Yeong being rich and, well, sort of friendly. But fuck if he was going to admit they were friends. “I thought you were trying to bribe me into coming back to the Kingdom of Corea. Like, look how good we can treat you in the Royal Guard, come join up kind of shit.” ☠: something i found challenging-- The casefic aspect. I kind of suck at casefic. How do ppl write mysteries? I don't know at all. ☾: how i thought people would respond to the fic-- I hoped a lot of ppl would like it! Yeong/Sin-jae is a bit niche but my last Yeong/Sin-jae fic had gotten a lot of comments. ☽: how people *actually* responded-- A bit less attention than I'd hoped for, but more comments/kudos accumulated over time. More comments/kudos than I get on average, certainly. ∞: something i wish i’d done differently-- Eh, no real regrets. Could be longer? That comes down to the casefic aspect again, though. To prolong it I would have needed better ideas for that element. ★: something i’m proud to have accomplished-- Hmm I don't think I did anything super interesting with this fic but I do think it's cute and kind of funny. So I'm satisfied.
Thanks for the ask! I didn't have the energy to answer all the questions last night lols. But I did enjoy rambling about my writing, as always.

He was married for only three years before his wife died suddenly, leaving everything to him. For an entire year, Min-hyuk was the prime suspect of her murder but no evidence was found against him. After spending two decades growing his father’s businesses, which were now his, Min-hyuk met Gong Hye-kyo, then in her early 20’s. When she was in her early 20’s, Hye-kyo met Bang Min-hyuk and she knew immediately he was smitten with her. Although she didn’t match his affection for her, she said yes when he proposed to her, knowing he was an extremely rich man. did anyone else find it lowkey romantic Sun Ho's minion put the ribbon on his sword for him and just trusted it would snap him out of an oncoming drug addiction. like, he really Did That.
Hi Anon ~
YES. Here’s Seon Ho, ready to just say “screw it” and fall into the oblivion of opium when trusty ol’ minon waltzes in with the sword bound with Yeon’s ribbon and throws it at him. Like, no son, we got bigger fish to fry - remember your badass declaration that you were going to be the one to rip your daddy apart? Father of the year just killed your little sister, man, so let’s stop the descent into self destruction and get to WORK.

Actually there's a big difference between "putting your love first" and "not giving a damn about anyone but your love" you know? Unfortunately Lee Yeon was shown to be the latter in both his 1938 and 2020 versions and he only learned his little brother's value after he lost him! And Yes. They both were mean to each other in pervious season But one had a reason for that and the other was just being mean for the sake of being mean for no reason. S2 just proved again that Rang would have always welcomed Yeon back in his life and it was only Yeon who didn't want that to happen. Grief? Opium? Call it anything you want but truth is 1938Yeon was a guy who didn't even bat an eye when he heard the news about Rang not having much time left and the only thing that got his attention was the news about Ah eum and this one just can't be excused! There was no reason for him to be that indifferent about his brother's limited time to live! He wasn't fighting Rang at the moment, he wasn't angry with him either. He simply just didn't care and we are just supposed to believe this guy when he says he never abandoned his brother? He would only show up after getting the news about Ah Eum's reincarnation otherwise he would still be sitting somewhere, wasting his life w/o giving a damn about what was happening to his brother.. and that's something future Yeon was well aware of too coz that was literally his past... but the thing is it's just so unfair to Rang considering he's the one who's going to sacrifice his life and happiness for such "brother" and give Yeon a happy life with his eternal love! Then Why not showing past Yeon as someone who cared about his brother in his own way after saying it over and over that he never abandoned Rang? Like was it too much to ask for? To have Yeon in better light? To show him as a caring brother specially now that everyone knows what a big sacrifice Rang is gonna make for him in future? Was it really too much to have Yeon as someone actually worthy of such big sacrifice? Coz sorry but this Yeon really doesn't deserve his brother and sure Lee Rang deserves so much better than this.

A chance
+Here.
Seon-ho throws himself on the ground as he slowly pulls his hand out of Hwi's arms. he sits in silence staring at the man who is sleeping.
+Mun-bok stiched his wounds. here the clean clothes.
Seon-ho takes the clothes from Hwi.
+do you want me to stay and help you?
Seon-ho shakes his head in the negative.
+call me when it finishes. and be careful about your wounds.
-thank you.
Hwi puts his hand gently on Seon-ho's shoulder and leaves room. Seon-ho pulls himself forward, towards him. this is the last time he can see him.
many things had changed in all these 12 years. that rough man who ordered Seon-ho to kneel down to take the bow had now given his life to protect Seon-ho. he tries his best not to cry, not to break. because this time he isn't there, who could collect Seon-ho's broken pieces and pour them into his empty shell.
he brushes away his unshed tears and placed his trembling hand on his cold hand.
-thank you for everything.
he doesn't smile, like always.
when he opens the bag, it's a silk dress exactly the same color as the one Seon-ho had taken to Hwi's father's burial. Seon-ho knows it isn’t an accident. he had never been trained to prepare the dead, and Hwi's father was the only person Seon-ho had helped Hwi with his burial. but over and over in his mind, Seon-ho had a glorious funeral for his mother and Yeon.
he removes his clothes and see his whole body is bandaged. ignoring the pain that shots through his body with every movement, he silently dresses him in a clean silk dress. it's different from usual but graceful. if he saw himself in such a situation, he certainly wouldn't have left Seon-ho and Hwi alive. Seon-ho laughs bitterly at the thought. he arranges the clothes and put his sword next to him. as always, he looks powerful and magnificent.
-I could never protect people who was precious to me. I'm sorry, but I won't fail this time.
Seon-ho immediately wipes away his tears.
-when I'm sure that Hwi is safe... then... I'll sleep forever. it doesn't matter where it is.
something weighs on his chest like all the times his loved ones were lost and he was left alone. he needs opium and alcohol. so that he can forget this torment a little. but he knows Sung-rok wouldn't be pleased, just as he knew his mother and Yeon weren't. he only puts his hand on his chest and press it on his painful wounds so that he could breathe. this time is the last time. he promises Sung-rok. while he knows it makes him angry.
he just sits there and stares at his face. remembering every moments they had. the life he could have with him. far from others and maybe a little piece?
Seon-ho doesn't know why he's thinking about Min-ho, his older brother. he had forgotten him for a long time and now, seeing Sung-rok's corpse, he remembers the day when Min-ho's lifeless body was pulled out of the water.
at least this time he has the chance to farewell and bury him, among all of them.
