A research team from the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University, China, has developed a novel biocompatible nanoadhesive for corneal transplantation. The nanoadhesive is based on tetrahedral framework nucleic acids combined with functionalized polycationic recombinant proteins. This unique composition minimizes the risks of tissue necrosis and inflammation associated with polymeric adhesives while inhibiting bacterial growth and promoting tissue repair. This work demonstrates an efficient strategy to break through the bottleneck of current ophthalmic adhesives. Developing safe and efficient tissue adhesives is urgently required in current ophthalmology practices to avoid traumatic suturing surgery. Although a variety of polymeric adhesives have been used to repair human tissue, their application in ocular tissue adhesion, especially in corneal transplantation, is still restricted to the preclinical stage.

Descemetocele in a cat.
I was presented with a cat with a corneal ulcer on the left eye that has been undergoing medical treatment for 2 weeks. The inflammation and infection was well controlled, but the ulcer progressed to descemetocele, probably due to self trauma. (image1)
Descemetocele is when the corneal ulcer is so deep, there is only one thin layer left. That layer is called the descemet. It is so thin that it bulges out due to the pressure inside the eye. One more poke, and the cornea will rupture. This is an emergency case where surgery is advised to be perform ASAP.
I suggested conjunctival flap, but due to owner's financial constrant, we settled at simple third eyelid flap along with medical treatment (antibiotics, antiinflammation, autologous serum, artificial tear, atropine sulfate drop)
The suture stayed for 3 weeks before removal. The result was satisfactory, with the descemet layer pushed back into place and granulation tissue (red patch) was formed around the lesion (image2)
At week4, scarring of the granulation is visible. (red patch start to become white) (image 3)
At week 6, all granulation is disappeared and scarring is complete. (image 4) I finished the medication here.
At week 8, the lesion is stable. There's a tiny bit of thin spot in the middle, but fluoresciene does not stain. The cat has no pain, and visual function is excellent, I call this case completed.
This is probably as good as it can get with this treatment. If we had used conjunctival flap there wouldn't be that weak point in the middle, but the aethetic will be uglier. (the flap will impede the vision somewhat). So third eyelid flap is an ok method. It is easy enough to performed by general vets and it is significantly cheaper too.
For this one, I'm comfortable with the lesion enough to dischage the case with no further appointment.

LiDAR reveals vast ancient Maya city and complex networks hidden in Mexico's Campeche forest

- By Nuadox Crew -
Archaeologists have uncovered thousands of ancient Maya structures and a large city named Valeriana in Campeche, Mexico, using aerial LiDAR technology to penetrate dense forest cover.
The discovery, which spans around 47 square miles, includes urban and rural settlements with reservoirs, temples, and roads, resembling other major Maya cities.
Previously overlooked due to its inaccessibility, Campeche is now recognized as a vital part of the Maya Lowlands, revealing complex urban planning and extensive connectivity among Maya cities.
The findings challenge the view of Maya cities as isolated entities, instead suggesting a vast, interconnected network.
Experts consider LiDAR a transformative tool, reshaping understanding of ancient Maya civilization and its environmental adaptation, organization, and conservation needs.

Disclaimer: kitten has already seen a vet, enucleation is planned as soon as she hits their minimum weight. Just asking as a vet student who feels like they have way too many little bits of info floating around in their brain to be sure about anything lol.
Kitten was dropped off at shelter with 0 history (of course), and my knowledge on this case is a little vague. Is this likely just from an infection left too long, that probably sealed the eye shut at some point and worsened? (Like, viral -> bacterial?) It looks it’s proptosed to me, but I’m also not sure if that’s just massive swelling. If it IS proptosed, is that a common sequelae of severe infection? Or do you really only get that with trauma in cats, and then secondary infection?
Not sure if my thinking is way off base, just looking for some general insight into how these eyes end up looking so gnarly. I feel like we’ve had quite a few dropped off this year. Thank you!
Hi, it's Sueanoi here.
I'm glad the kitten is getting some vet attention now. I hope the healing goes as smooth as it can.
As to answer your question, I don't think that's proptosis (eyeball goes out of orbit). I think it is ruptured cornea that has severe inflammation on top.
Anything at all can cause a secondary corneal injury if the eye is irritated, causing the animal to scratch it and worsening the lesion. Over time, superficial ulcers can become perforated.
Over here in SEA, young stray cats are very often infected with feline herpes. It is a very common cause of blindness (as the last consequence of virus-induced ulcer) here.
Your thinking isn't entirely off base, because virus -> bacteria -> catastrophic consequense IS probably correct.
Once it is time to enucleate, I suggest you observe the surgery. I am quite certain that the globe itself is still sitting within the orbit. The things that are coming out of the cat's head is the eyeball's insides that are spilled out of the ruptured cornea.
Keep clean and control infection. There is a chance that the cat won't even need the surgery if the eye shrink down and become enophalmos before it reaches minumum weight (which might take weeks...whichever happen first). Downside of keeping the shrunk eye is having to keep it clean for the rest of its life. So if that is a factor for the cat getting an adoption, removing it anyway for ease of care is still a valid choice.
Best of luck!

According to a new mouse study, gut bacteria may cause vision loss in certain eye diseases, which could potentially be treated with antibiotics. Researchers from China and the UK discovered bacteria from the gut in damaged areas of the eyes of mice with mutations in the Crumbs homolog 1 (CRB1) gene, a major cause of inherited eye diseases.

Crucio in game kind of reminded me of lightning or electrocution. We know Ominis has been blind since birth so we know it’s unrelated (it’s more likely a result of the Gaunt’s inbreeding) but could the crucio spell have made them look like this at least? Enjoy my ophthalmology nerd takes. 👀

vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment in cat.
a cat comes in with sudden blindness. always check blood pressure in case you find lesion like this. many cases are due to high blood pressure (over 200 mmHg). others could be feline viruses, don’t are clotting issues.
