I can imagine this exact situation only slightly different. Laura opening his mail, him asking if she opened it. Her saying no. Her giving him the stubborn glare and all he has to do is stare at her and she confesses that yeah, she DID open the mail.

Him having a flashback and yelling STOP at her and her innocently saying the food isnt done yet.

Them eating together, him eating his burnt food, her eating the fresh warm food. Its all wonderful symbolism.
