Apache OpenOffice is absolutely not "based". It's effectively unmaintained (Apache is a holding pen for dead software projects) and only existed in the first place because of stupid corporate-political bullshit involving Oracle (fuck Oracle). People using it should ditch it in favour of LibreOffice, which is highly similar (they're both descendants of the defunct OpenOffice.org) and substantially more vigorous.

There have been a few times when I opened a Word document using OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice (later on when LibreOffice was the obvious fork) and I noticed the layout of the document being different than it should be, which usually prompted me into pirating MS Office and opening that document in it.

This is what I assume 90% of "alternative won't cut it" cases are, because as far as end user who already uses MS Office, but wants to try alternatives, is concerned, this is enough. The rest are likely missing functionality, but for this I won't be able to provide concrete examples because even back in MS Office 97 era these programs had so much functionality I found it impossible to click through and learn everything.

This is where the "users only use 10% of any program" comes in, except it happens that for different users the subset of 10% of functionality will be different. When my age was still a single digit, I happened to use PowerPoint to make simple interactive animations because the program allowed you for various stuff to make sounds, individual parts of the presentation could move around the screen and react to events like clicking (if this element is clicked, move to slide X; if some other element is clicked, move to slide Y). This happens to be an example of a use case that a lot, lot, lot of people won't have, except given the userbase size eventually someone will rely on a feature more, more obscure than that.

Like Visual Basic support where your Word document could load an OS-provided dynamically linked library, and call into a message box function, and show a message box.

For corporations there are additional factors which result from acting on a larger scale: if your corporation has a million documents, then incompatibility happening in 0.1% of these still implies a 1000 won't open properly.

And also if you already are licensing Windows from Microsoft, then you are also likely to get license for the office suite, mail server, mail client, cloud access, Teams, Windows server for remote administration of every computer, and so on, and so on. These programs integrate with each other and Microsoft provides support for it.

Is Microsoft Office really that nice :? Compared to other office suites I mean. I've never used it so I don't have a point of reference, I always just thought "Well, office suites is office suites"

So now I know of two two options for free open source programs, this and LibreOffice. It looks like both branched off from the same open source roots about a decade ago, according to wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org. And both include the same suite of programs as MS Office, including a word processor (Writer) and a spreadsheet program (Calc), which are the ones I’m most interested in.

PSA: Es gibt momentan einige Seiten, die Softwaredownloads anbieten, aber in Wirklichkeit Adware verbreiten. Konkret sind das:

Diese Seiten werden bei Google leider auch ziemlich weit oben angezeigt, sodass man leicht draufkommen kann. vlc.de und audacity.de werden in uBlock Origin bereits standardmäßig blockiert, die anderen beiden Seiten leider noch nicht. Am besten lädt man die Programme entweder direkt von der Herstellerseite runter oder man benutzt Ninite.

Falls ihr doch darauf reingefallen sein solltet, könnt ihr Adwcleaner benutzen, um die unerwünschten Programme wieder zu entfernen.
