On chapter 969 we got this image:

If you look closely, you will see that Kiku, Ashura Doujin and the dog are in a gray scale, same as Lord Oden.

And, in the last chapter (976), those three say that if kinemon would die, they would die too.

so this leads me to  believe that kinemon, asura doji, inuarashi and o kiku will die

chapter 1014—spoilers

Okay, I’m super busy, so not much to say this week except it made me tear up.

But first, the cover!

I love this! Law’s nickname being the Japanese word for tiger (tora), the o part just means man. And it just kind adds to that itch to write that Law-wandering-monk thing. I think that Oda has allusions to religion all over One Piece, cos’ it’s pretty everyday in Japanese life too, even though Japanese will tell you that they are not religious.

But Law is the guy who has so far had the vague Christian background, and who adopted the wandering monk disguise while in Wano. (written about here).

The scans had this really neat bit of information too (below). I got this from mangasee. I usually go to ... I can’t remember, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole today, the site seemed dodgy, but I think they’re (forgotten name) the original scanners. But, anyway, thanks very much to them. They often colour panels as well.

I think the LawZo, ZoLaw shippers can run with this one too! (Zoro’s animal being a tiger, I think).

Okay, the chapter. I won’t cover it in depth, just things that struck me. It doesn’t mean the rest wasn’t important, but you know that someone will cover it all.

Flashbacks can be lazy writing, and maybe it is lazy writing—Oda trying to figure out how he can boost Chopper’s power cos it’s needed now, but the flashback with Caesar is not out of the realm of imagination (panel above).

It’s also why I think  it’s a good idea not to take announcements and pronouncements as (G)oda’s word. Cos, especially those coming from World Government sources, or that are hearsay, have a likelihood of being a different story in flashback. Like, Oda never fully shows his hand.

Regarding the panels, Caesar’s ego would let him design something for Chopper, even though Chopper is his enemy. Maybe Chopper designed his own enhanced rumble balls using Caesar’s knowhow.

The Marys are super cool (and Perospero is still in the game). 

And look!! Law and Kid are sharing a panel! Or a strip (and so are Sanji and Zoro, and a speech bubble! I guess Zoro must have woken up). 

These guys won’t be so easily fooled by Kaidou’s words of Luffy’s demise, but the idea of the Polar Tang popping up from somewhere to rescue Luffy maybe has more credence this week.

Law’s got his, I’m so upset with this news I must grit my teeth face on. His captain’s coat is still stylishly draped. He did have that second to rest on blackleg’s shoulder in 1012, was it? He must have fixed himself up then. Ooh, and tatt. Did we see his tatt when he landed on the shoulder? I must do some serious research.

We only get a blob of Kid, unfortunately.

Robin’s looking kick-ass while she kicks some ass. And Brook’s in the background doing his own version of Zigfield follies. (Panels above).

So, Kanjuro sure plays dirty (above). I do like the scans’ translation of “Even the sharpest of swords becomes dull when pointed at a friend”. Ashura’s line to Kiku when she hadn’t done such a good job of eliminating Kanjuro the first time around.

And man, if she couldn’t finish of a traitorous friend, she sure can’t eliminate a father figure. But fake-Oden/Kanjuro has no hesitation in finishing her. 

Of course the words that Oden-Kanjuro says, “How could you raise a sword against me?!”  can be read on so many levels and applied to so many characters. And of course are also what Kiku should be saying, and the scabbards as a whole to Kanjuro.

Ah. Not Kiku. She and Izou have had like five minutes of reunion. Oh, man. That exchange a few chapters back. Ahhh. And that’s a very poetic translation. I wonder what the official will be? But Kanjuro was a friend. Is a friend. And that’s what cuts the deepest.

Yes, he was damaged. Orochi too. But was it that mindset where the pain was just too deeply embedded to ever trust the good, or feel it? But I think he felt it. Just couldn’t trust it. Such a complex character. 

And Kaidou and Kanjuro, the only two characters that I remember (there are probably more) who have an expressed death wish. That being a main aim of their lives.

What a betrayal, huh? Oof. And Kin’emon’s tears are evident. Is Kanjuro’s crying? Seems he was never able to feel or see that emptiness and form were the same thing. Ah.

Shinobu too. Big chapter for her. She did not suspect Kanjuro at all in Ebisu town where she accused Law’s crewmates of betrayal. 

Both she and Kanjuro didn’t recognise Tonoyasu (Yasuie) and shared a moment of camaraderie in their embarrassment at not knowing his name. I know her role was to deflect reader suspicion from Kanjuro, but putting that aside. Oof.

And Momonosuke? Thinking he saw his father again? (And what did he read in the log book?).  Man, once that kid is shogun I hope he hires a good psychologist / healer.

And what does he want Kin’emon to tell everyone? And whose voice did he hear?

And Shinobu, I reckon you could have taken out the frog.

Although he’s looking worse for wear. C’mon Chopper. You and Marco can do it!

“Debt Repaid” Theme - One Piece

So, I know I should be working on E3S story preview and another analysis/theory post-- something that I have been planning for a long while...

I just couldn’t get this thought out of my head. And I thought it could be interesting to incorporate my thoughts about how the Wano Arc is going. This is more ramblings and hopeful content, but it’s worth writing down at least

Spoilers: From Chapter 1008 - Recent Chapter release (1016)

With the way Wano has been playing it for the last few months, it’s produced a whole bunch of twisted responses. Scenes can switch back and forth from hopeful to disheartening. Considering the enemy the Straw Hats and the Samurai are facing, it makes sense that their victory would not be achieved very easily. And a very common disheartening prospect that is constantly brought up since even before Chapter 1000, is the defeat and possible death of the Akazaya Nine.

Case in point: Ashura Doji, Kiku, and Kin’emon

There’s a few things that should be made clear:

(1) I love ALL the Scabbards (Denjiro, Kawamatsu, and Kiku being my favorites)

(2) A part in writing this is based around my hope for ALL of them to live to see the results of the war.

(3) This ramble isn’t meant to be a complete analysis into why I think it is likely they will survive (I still have doubts), only looking at a certain angle from a story telling perspective. I have my own theory that it is Hiyori who is the mysterious figure that healed the Scabbards the first time in chapter 1004. How she did it so effectively is beyond me (though she may have more medical knowledge and skills than what was led on). And she is following the nine, healing the ones who need it most as a way for her to help in the raid, leading to the success and survival to the scabbards. This is probably a stretch but I’m sticking with it until something is confirmed. And after the last chapter showing her not with Hitetsu or Toko, I’m more confident about it being the case.

There is just as much evidence and speculations for them NOT to survive as much as ones that say they will. I could list out many angles the end of the battle and the survival of the nine could be taken, but most would end up being repeats from others posts that I genuinely agree with. And that’s not what this is intended to be. 

What this is meant to be is looking at a theme in One Piece that I couldn’t help but make a slight connection towards in response towards the speculation of the Scabbards dying. And it’s this theme ….

Granted, I don’t know if this could be considered a theme, but I’m calling it a theme. Because, I didn’t realize this for a while, but the message Luffy gives to Sanji in this instance actually comes up more throughout One Piece. Especially with very prominent characters: the Straw Hats, Law, Ace, etc.

A rather important moment that could go hand-in-hand with the “Little-to-no-deaths” in One Piece. Not perfectly, and I don’t think it was intentional, as that goes more with the dreams aspect/theme of the series. However, it has been prominent towards the protagonists in every sense of their stories. There have been many moments that people have given their lives for the various Straw Hats so that they could live. In both current story line and in flashback land.

Shanks giving up his arm (almost his life) to save Luffy so he can achieve his dream in becoming King of the Pirates.

Bellemere sacrificing her life so her daughters could live and know they were loved.

Saul protecting Robin to give her a chance to live and make worthy friends.

Pedro, who saw something worthy in the Straw Hat crew, and giving them a chance to escape Whole Cake Island by sacrificing his life.

Those are just some examples, with plenty more spread out in various arcs. 

And it also extends out in the Wano Arc during the Oden Flashback.

When Oden issued that challenge to hold his retainers while being boiled in oil, he would have already been put under plenty of strain on his physical health. And by the end of the challenge, he put in so much faith in the Scabbards that is very much like any other flashback death which is meant to inspire and give the survivors something to live for.

It’s a common theme that I think is a benefactor in what could potentially keep the Samurai alive. In which them living up towards seeing Wano being free is fulfilling their Lord’s dream. His sacrifice and ambition is met through his retainers living because he put so much faith and love for them to live in his place.

Is the thematic threading going to be enough in the end for their survival though? I say no.

I’m not ever going to bet on life or death of a character in this series. That is something I learned and will stick to for the long run. Because you could either be really upset or end up overthinking about it like what I’m doing right now.

And, yeah, a majority of the fake deaths do annoy me on so many levels. Mostly because it gave me unneeded amounts of anxiety and is rather poor use of foreshadowing and/or tension. It would be better if they were not used anymore, absolutely, or they actually stick with the build-up and give the characters a genuine death like it was “meant” to be.

Like I said, I don’t want to bet on life or deaths. This is my hope being laid out in words using a theme that has been used more often in the story than most seem to realize. And it’s a known scene but not mentioned beyond Sanji or Luffy’s character. There are other contenders or outside forces that give that same level of hope that the Azakaya Nine may live, but this is the one that is able to encapsulate something that was set up from the early arcs and continues to be relevant.

// I got so emotional with the recent chapter so instead of doing a panel redraw I just did a whole page kjdfhg. Also drew and wrote it the way I wanted so my ship can be even more sad I am not sorry. This is 100% how I interpreted it. You can never tell me they weren’t married. That like canon. 

I was hoping Kin would be the one to cut Kanjuro down ever since they entered Onigashima so seeing this and seeing not only Kin being devastated, but also Kanjuro actually crying. Whether it was staying in the role or him having genuinely feelings at the last minuet, it all works out for me and my ship lol.
