i do wonder why fandom is so insistent on proving that "gale could eventually change his mind" when it comes to fatherhood.

if children are something you ideally want in your romance - that is completely valid and luckily for you, there are several romance options in the game that can provide just that. wyll, lae'zel, and halsin. even shadowheart briefly mentions that children might be a possibility for her in the future. 4 options total that either already have entire adoption subplots or are open to the idea.

meanwhile, fandom is bending over backwards, bringing up aspects of gale's arc that are completely irrelevant to the topic at hand and claiming that any statement coming from gale or any boundary he sets should forever be questioned because... "he has been known to have inferiority issues"?!

gale is a character who is very likely in his 40s. he isn't some 20-something college boy who is still trying to figure everything out. i personally never felt like there was any point in the context of gale's relationship with tav where he was unsure about his desires. quite the contrary.

gale is also very vocal about what he wants. not wasting any time in proposing to tav after the big bad had been defeated. i am pretty sure there would have been instances where gale expressed his desire to have children (whether that may mean immediate or somewhere down the line) if larian had intended to include this aspect in his romance as well.

...but instead all we have to go on when it comes to the subject of children in general are lines like these:

player: gale... how would you feel about having another person in our relationship?

gale: what, like a child? i'm not quite sure i'd consider myself father material, plus our current lifestyle isn't exactly what i'd call settled...

tara: this is why mrs. dekarios and i will be waiting an eternity more for grandchildren.

gale: psst! shoo, tara.

nodecontext: shooing away tara like one would a naughty cat.

gale, upon spotting oliver during their game of hide and seek: ah, i have you! just a shame i don't want you.

so, single father can't connect to daughter bc he has to juggle being a single father, having a regular day job, and a more risky night job where i'm thinking he's one of those organized crime "freelance" medics? a whole lot of conversations of 'mom never forgot [insert]!' or 'mom would always [insert]!' because she used to live with her mother but her mother passed tragically somehow, and now this sad guy has to (unfortunately for her) step in; former regular doctor but fell out of grace after losing a patient maybe and his shit about it, maybe he got blamed for the death of someone very important, so he's now just a regular barista somewhere EXCEPT you don't need a medical license if you're patching up criminals, you just need the skills, so guess what he got dragged in to!!!

his daughter is, like... 13 which is ofc the perfect age for such a sudden life-altering event to impact you at (sarcasm ofc), so yeah, FUN STUFF! he's, like, in his early 30s somewhere, so obviously they had her very young (listen, if you have kids at 20 that's... that's young to me, i'm turning 25 in two months and i've only recently began to let 'i'm an adult' set in properly, idk) which might have been part of the reason behind splitting in the first place, because they did split very early on, most likely high-school sweethearts who thought they'd had it all figured out except lmao

ooc: tl;dr I had a death in my extended family. It was very sudden and unexpected. Someone I'm sort of close to but not very, but someone my mother and brother were both extremely close with. And due to some...complicated...dynamics with other people in the extended family it's been enormously stressful and dramatic and I've been dealing with trying to help figure stuff out all week.

quick rundown for that modern cowpuncher verse (v;lil slice of heaven saddled on a cowpuncher's dream):

kid that came from dust scraps that took to the pbr as soon as he could (min age is 18 for entry, I'm sure); he quickly takes the stage by storm as the kid who came from nowhere.

in elaboration to his youth: it's not so different from how it is in all his other verses. a dispossesed, orphan traveller who works his ocassional odd jobs, but for the most part he DOES stick to being a cowhand; bothering the local vaqueros and rancheros about rodeo competitions. he does a lot of trial and error learning on his own, uses a lot of secondhand and borrowed equipment while building his own set for his first entry. before the loss of his parents, he'd started with mutton busting as per most kids.

cole's other point of interest in the competitions is steer wrestling, which he will perform for on the occassion, but not as frequently for a bull ride; he's also a mean ass roper - but he keeps this skillset to the job despite folk asking him to partner up for team-roping or just enter as a roper.

cole takes a lot of his winning funds to settle out and work his own property in his downtime. it's a modest size compared to an average ranch (he keeps about ~25 head or less), and he keeps it this way to be manageable when he's travelling between competitions. good neighbors will ranch-sit for him while he's away.

he's well-known and well-regarded in the town he settles down in; knows most people's names. im just going to put some of his other modern-verse npc's residing in this town which include Ernesto, who taught him to maintain and build a motorbike, and Ol' Kooky Sal who threw him around on a crop duster plane.

Maria remains his ranching horse, though she's getting up there in age. He still steals her from Drug Mules and it plays, in part, as to why she mostly remains a stay-at-home horse. He shows in public with another horse I'll work out more in depth later.

He still loses his arm, at some point.

gosh, diego really truly honestly completely finds his purpose in protecting and taking care of people. i think if he got out of his head and realized he could do it outside of vigilante or police work, he could find something really fulfilling in a much more legal way.

a really bad fanfic I read a while ago made lwj a heart surgeon which was an insane choice for several reasons but the idea was I think 'oh he's SUCH a good person' and I love my cardiologist but at this point when I hear heart surgeon I assume it's someone who got into the field for the money, routinely screams at surgical staff, and throws instruments across the room. cv surgeons tend to NOT be chill (and like...for good reason like it's heart surgery you wanna do well). and I'm speaking as someone who has both had heart surgery and who really appreciated my care, and someone who's worked with these types of surgeons...it's very different than what you'd expect ig.

need need NEED to emphasize that constantine's primary big bad skillset is psychological warfare, verbal assault, and strategically leading people to their demise at the hands of other things. his murder charges aren't because he actually physically killed anyone, the first was the most normal explanation for the newcastle incident and the second was him being framed. physical violence is not his thing, killing is not his thing, spilling any blood that isn't his or isn't strictly, strictly necessary to spill is not his thing, and he will, more likely than not, get sick if he has to do it!!
