★ Main Story | Act 13 - Budding Spring | Chapter 15 - Ketchuped To Hell
Company Employee A: I’m so sorry to bother you.
Company Employee A: We’ve been able to handle English-speaking and Asian countries just fine, but this region is a little more difficult for us and there aren’t many people in the company who would be able to help…
Company Employee A: I’ve been considering outsourcing, but I haven’t gotten approval yet. Please, can you at least make sure there aren’t any parts that could be misunderstood in the machine translation?
Chikage: That I can do easily.
Chikage: …
*Typing*
Chikage: (So this is the final document.)
Chikage: --.
Chikage: (...Same last name and everything. I still hate myself for reacting to it out of reflex.)
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Tsumugi: It’s been quite a while since the voting period for the final selection started, and yet the notices of debut performances aren’t showing any signs of stopping.
Kazunari: And there are still just as many new troupe and troupe member recruitment notices too~.
Kumon: That reminds me, there was a kid in one of my classes that said they were thinking about starting to do theater.
Tsumugi: It seems like the more people are exposed to the opportunity, the more people become interested in it.
Tenma: And because of the SNS Votes, more and more theater companies are shifting their focus to streaming.
Omi: While working on a photoshoot the other day, I met someone who works in the film industry and they said they’ve suddenly been really busy lately.
Yuki: A lot of people’s impressions from overseas are starting to pop up online.
Tasuku: The new Fleur Award really is helping to bring life to the world of theater, just like they said at the first press conference.
Azuma: It’s especially amazing considering things have only just begun.
Sakyo: Yukio-san is the type of guy to be in the eye of the storm when it comes to theater.
Guy: With the increased attention on it, he and Kamikizaka must be very busy doing various interviews.
Sakyo: Well, I’m sure Reni-san’s handling it just fine.
Yuki: The number of reviews on the theater forums has gone through the roof, but a good chunk of them are pretty scathing.
Yuki: Even performances done by famous theater companies and playwrights are getting stuff like, “I couldn’t understand the dialogue because they talked too fast, but the costumes were cute, I guess.”
Yuki: And “It suddenly turned into a contemporary dance thing and I had no clue what it was supposed to mean, but overall it was interesting.”
Azami: Honest but harsh, I guess.
Sakyo: They probably didn’t understand the stylistic beauty of that troupe, so it’s likely just them being candid on their first time seeing them perform.
Tsuzuru: They’re interesting to read, but I fear the day they come after us.
Sakuya: I wonder what they’re gonna say about us…
Izumi: Let’s not overthink things and start catastrophizing. We’ll be fine as long as we be ourselves.
Itaru: Right. If we worry about it too much and disappoint our existing fans, we’ll become the harbingers of our own doom.
Yuki: Well, it’s probably best that we all limit ourselves when it comes to reading reviews.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
*Door opens*
Yuzo: Mornin’.
Tsuzuru: Good morning.
Sakuya: Good morning! We’ll do our best today!
Izumi: Sorry to do this when you’re busy preparing things for your own troupe, Yuzo-san.
Yuzo: It ain’t a problem.
Itaru: Have you figured your attack plan for the Fleur Award on your end, Yuzo-san?
Yuzo: We’re just gonna do what we always do. That said, we got our asses kicked durin’ the pre-votin’.
Izumi: MANKAI Company placed 70th.
Yuzo: We were 103rd.
Sakuya: Furinkazan was!?
Tsuzuru: Even though you’re so popular your tickets sell out every show and you have a pretty solid fan base…
Yuzo: That’s ‘cause most of our fans are older.
Yuzo: So most of ‘em didn’t even know the pre-votin’ existed or if they did know, they didn’t know how to do it.
Yuzo: It’s gonna be a tough battle, but we’ve gotta fight in it in our own way.
Yuzo: Well, this ain’t the end of things, so we’re gonna take it at our own pace and not try to rush it.
Yuzo: But that’s just Yukio-san throwin’ us curveballs in the same way he always does. The things that guy comes up with never fails to amaze me.
Izumi: Haha… that’s him, alright.
Yuzo: Well then, if you’re all ready, then let’s get things started.
Sakuya: Okay! We’ll do our best!
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Yuzo: …
Izumi: What do you think…?
Izumi: (I haven’t felt this kind of nervousness in a long while…)
Yuzo: Haaah… You’re as stiff as ever.
Yuzo: Given it’s a sequel to your debut performance, there ain’t any problems with the way you’re interpretin’ the roles, but overall, you’re fightin’ spirit just ain’t there.
Yuzo: Tsuzuru, you’re still havin’ your doubts about the script, and that’s why you’re not fully focused on the play, ain’t it?
Tsuzuru: …Yes.
Yuzo: And the rest of ya are too focused on wantin’ to put on a good performance to get the results ya need for the rankings.
Yuzo: ‘Course, puttin’ on a good performance does matter, but you guys should damn well know that by now.
Yuzo: Above all, you should think about what ya wanna convey and accomplish with this performance again.
Yuzo: Do ya wanna earn your spot in the rankings or do you wanna show off your growth…
Sakuya: --.
Yuzo: ‘Course, there’s nothin’ wrong with wantin’ recognition. But if that’s all you’re doin’ it for, then you’re just earnin’ points.
Yuzo: You’ll end up bein’ consumed by thoughts like, “If we do this, we’ll be more popular and get more points” or “If we do that, we can get some extra points”-- But what we’re doin’ is theater. It ain’t a competition.
Yuzo: What is a Spring Troupe play to you guys? What are you doin’ this for? Who’re you doin’ this for?
Yuzo: You’re doin’ a sequel of your debut play. What did that play mean to all of you back then?
Yuzo: If you’re gonna do a sequel to your debut performance, maybe it’s best ya go back to those origins and give ‘em a look over again.
Yuzo: …But do it with some caution, yeah?
Izumi: (I wonder if Yuzo-san is also pretty worried about the new Fleur Award.)
Izumi: (No, I’m sure companies other than Yuzo-san’s are worried too… We’re not alone in this.)
Izumi: (What place does our troupe have in the rapidly changing world of theater…)
Izumi: (Maybe we need to rethink the path we’re going to take.)
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Citron: It has been a long time since we have been ketchuped to hell like that~.
Masumi: Criticized to hell?
Itaru: His kindness stat has been upped since back then, though.
Chikage: Isn’t that because of how much he approves of us?
Masumi: But that just makes fixing the parts he doesn’t approve of that much harder.
Sakuya: There… really is no easy answer, huh? Our Spring Troupe’s acting… our origin…
Tsuzuru: Who would’ve thought it’d be so hard just to be ourselves?
Chikage: Because sometimes you’re not the one to understand yourself the best.
Izumi: We decided to do this sequel in order to go back to our roots and remember where we started…
Izumi: So, what do you all think was the best part about Spring Troupe back during the first RomiJuli?
Sakuya: To be entirely honest with myself, my acting skills were horrible. All I had back then was my desire to act.
Tsuzuru: But you’ve still got that desire even now.
Sakuya: Yeah! If anything, I love and cherish theater even more than I did back then.
Masumi: So I wonder what we’re “lacking” now.
Itaru: I mean, I’m pretty sure I’m way more absorbed into theater than I was back then, at least.
Chikage: Our bonds as Spring Troupe have deepened and we’ve all improved too.
Citron: I do not feel like we are lacking anything~…
Masumi: But I get what Yuzo was saying.
Tsuzuru: Same here… He was right about me not being able to shake my hesitation about the script, too.
Chikage: Differences from our debut performance, huh…? For better or worse, this is no longer our “first time” on stage.
Itaru: You mean like our freshness is gone, or something? Well, there is a certain something about an author’s debut work, I guess.
Sakuya: You can only have one “first time”, so it’s not something you can do again, huh…
Tsuzuru: So, does that mean that, in a way, we’ll never be able to surpass our debut performance…?
Itaru: Sad, but true.
Masumi: Something that can’t be surpassed despite our improvement, huh…
Itaru: The impact of a first time and a blissfully unaware, reckless drive do have a certain power to them.
Sakuya: Hmm…
Izumi: …
Izumi: (Everyone seems gloomy now.)
Izumi: Let’s let this problem sit for a bit and each think about it more individually. We’ll have another meeting about it some other day.
Tsuzuru: Gotcha.
Itaru: …Yeah.
*Phone buzzes*
Sakuya: Ah--.
Izumi: The meeting’s over, so you’re okay to go and take that.
Sakuya: Sorry, excuse me, then.
*Footsteps*
Sakuya: --Hello, Sakuma speaking. I appreciate your call.
Sakuya: Um, I’m so sorry. About that…
*Door closes*

I am here today to present to you all,,
the genshin dystopian au <3
feel free to use this idea, just credit me lol. use the hashtag "#genshindystopianau" when using this idea
also DISCLAIMERS:
I'm 100% sure this is original but I'm sorry if someone else made a separate au with the same name,,,
this au can also be very derealizing to some people, so be aware of that k thanks <3
I was stuck whether or not to make Blanc or Mitsuki the protagonist, but in this post, it's from Mitsuki's POV
lastly I will definitely make more posts on this when I get motivation :)
anyways lets get going 🤩
so life is exactly how it is in the real world, genshin is currently a pretty popular game, and life is average and boring for our protagonist (who I'm gonna call X for now)
X has been a fan of Genshin Impact since its release, but wasn't able to play until early January of 2021, since she didn't have a device to play on. her first 5-star was Ganyu, and she's even AR 56.
however, she has maladaptive daydream disorder (AKA she daydreams too much) :,)
so it's hard for her to get motivation to go and play, since she'd rather just daydream about it than play it. if she somehow did have the motivation, she would be a much higher AR by now
she's basically a shame to the high AR name lol
then, one random day while she's at school, everybody's electronic devices glitch out and play some video explaining that Teyvat is actually real and that seven schools across the globe will be chosen at random, one based off of each region (the school has to be either a high school or college/university, and has to have a high enough student count, so really not all over the world but yk)
also on the off chance there is no electronic devices nearby, the video plays in reflections (such as water or mirrors). if all else fails, the person will literally get a vision (no pun intended). and it's in every language. and explains what genshin impact is. so everybody knows and understands. kk?? got that?? good
then once each region has a school associated with it, everyone inside the building is "locked in". nobody can leave or enter, including teachers and staff ;-; (also technically they can go outside, but there's a very strong elemental barrier around the school, so they can only go a certain distance)
FEAR NOT THOUGH, for "Celestia", aka the top organization people running this grand scheme, will bring supplies and basically whatever the archon wants to the school. cost is ignored/not an issue 👍
and that brings me to my next point -- a small selection of students are picked to have visions. these students have views aligning with the archon/region's views, so
Anemo = Freedom
Geo = Contracts, Loyalty
Electro = Eternity
Dendro = Knowledge
Hydro = Justice
Pyro = War
Cryo = Love
above is kind of like the guide to which element has which strong ideologies. so a little different from the game, but this makes things a lot easier for me lol
for example, if someone strongly believes in love and care, they would probably get a cryo vision (if they are in one of the seven schools. you have to be living in one of the seven schools to be able to get a vision). also their desires can be more twisted (for example, someone with a geo vision firmly believing contracts are unnecessary and should be broken), although this is uncommon.
depending on the school's corresponding region, the vision users in that school will have the special vision casing (ex: vision holders from the liyue school will have a liyue casing around their vision)
there's also an archon in each school, which was previously mentioned
one of the people in the school (usually the one with the strongest ideologies to that region's element) gets chosen as the school's archon. they're in charge of everyone in the school and can basically do whatever they want
and yes, they're even in charge of adults if they're a kid. They're also the only ones with contact to big boss Celestia
ALSOOOOOO whether the person has played genshin or not has an impact on the social hierarchy of the school (yes there is a social hierarchy, deal with it)
a special room in the school HAS to be dedicated to playing genshin (it's one of the few mandates given by Celestia, other than things like "don't try to overthrow Celestia, keep the social hierarchy, etc).
however, in order to enter the room, you have to be a "genshin member", which means meeting at least one of the following requirements:
1) be AR 16 or above in genshin impact
2) have been a fan of genshin impact since March 1st, 2021 (a test is taken to see your knowledge on genshin story and lore)
if you don't meet one of these requirements, you can't access the genshin room OR play genshin. playing genshin without being a member is a huge crime in the schools (depending on your class the punishment is different).
Social media is still permitted, and you can become a fan after the school lockdown and setup, you can just never play the game or enter the genshin room. and yes, vision holders may have no prior knowledge on genshin (so they have a vision but aren't members)
Below is the basic frame for school hierarchy:
Celestia
Archon
Vision holder, plays genshin
Vision holder, doesn't play genshin
Plays genshin, no vision
No vision, doesn't play genshin
lastly, anyone in the schools that are chosen has their appearance changed to be what they WISH they were (example: some dude wishes he didn't have a beard, and so his beard permanently disappears once the school locks down). this feature goes as far as to change someone's gender, so overall pretty positive
with all of this in mind, the schools are then chosen, and WHAT DO YOU KNOW, X's school is chosen to be the Mondstadt region, and she's also the anemo archon
I mean,,, she's a big fan of persona 5, and also wants to escape her extremely religious and Christian parents, so she does heavily align with freedom ideologies???
but she's like 16, unmotivated, and doesn't know what to do with her life
so she just pretends that she just has an anemo vision and is apart of normal Mondstadt society. she does send an email though with an alternate account to all the school staff, basically saying that since she's in charge, students are allowed to do whatever they want -- they don't have to go to classes, take tests that are normally required, or even eat school food if they don't want to.
she ends up putting this announcement out on the loudspeaker with a text to speech voice, since the adults don't listen, but also says that everyone must pursue some sort of passion or hobby, as long as it doesn't hurt others. The upper floor of the library is what is turned into the genshin room (a room specialized for genshin members to play the game and socialize about it)
her appearance is also completely changed, so she changes her name to "Mitsuki", since she has now taken on the appearance of her self-insert OC. fun 😋
before her school became the "irl mondstadt", she wasn't really noticed or liked?? everybody thought she was babyish and ditzy, mostly because of her disorder causing her to space out often. but she's actually really smart, and as she is now undercover as a normal person, she decides to keep up her child-like persona, despite being one of the highest-ranking people in Mondstadt.
even in her undercover state, she is literally the person with the longest association to genshin, and a vision (bc apparently long-time genshin players are nonexistent in her school ig?). if there wasn't an archon, she would have been the default leader anyway lol
so she's kind of just undercover bc she wants to be treated as a normal human being and not worshipped wherever she walks (which is understandable)
but since she's a ditz and seen as an idiot, leadership ends up in the hands of Blanc, a tall hot man with fluffy black hair and a Hydro vision. <3
he's been playing genshin since June of 2021 apparently, and he has good leadership skills (according to the mass Mondstadt population ig)
he's the one that gets a church built dedicated to the anemo archon to replace the west side of the building's third floor, and he's the one that Mitsuki is just like "Yeah I'm gonna leave this up to him"
plus he lawfully abides by the rules the anemo archon set, so that's a plus
also if you're wondering how he transformed the building so easily, I have an explanation for that 😈. basically now that the school is inside a barrier, those with proper authority can change the interior shape of the school with mAgIc (the outside still appears the same). so kind of like how in Encanto, there's all that space in those bedrooms, but logically that wouldn't all fit in that tiny house
anyways there's a lot more but I'm gonna save that for later lol. I have a plethora of things I could talk about, but this was more of an introduction post :)
Future Topics for Discussion on the Genshin Dystopian AU:
progression of the mondstadt school society (how it kind of builds into a full on culture, what that culture is like, etc)
OC's -- what are the characters? what are they like? what do they do?
Infrastructure -- what is on each floor of the school? how many floors does the school have? etc
what about the other schools (ex. the Sumeru or Snezhnayan schools? what are they like?).
the last one is one I haven't really thought much on, and is perfect for readers out there to make OC's from it. have fun lol

Yamato Nikaido RabbiTube Rabbit TV Part 1: Spending Time With Yamato
Part 2 | Part 3
Staff: …Now, on to the RabbiTube project.
Staff: Our plan is to introduce the videos by featuring clips on NEXT Re:vale!
Staff: We’d really appreciate it if you could show a side of yourselves that people don’t usually get to see on TV. It’s a pleasure to be working with you!
Momo: We’ve got high hopes for you guys!
Yuki: Feel free to fully expose yourselves to the public.
Mitsuki Izumi: Ahaha, please be gentle with us! Looks like I’m gonna have to do a RabbiTube study marathon..!
Gaku Yaotome: By the way, Tenn, I saw you watching RabbiTube videos the other day. Do you know any good ones?
Tenn Kujo: …I was just watching cat videos.
Gaku Yaotome: Cats, huh. That’s not gonna help us learn anything.
Ryunosuke Tsunashi: …I think they might help! You could learn ways to entertain and soothe people…
Gaku Yaotome: Ryu, not all of us are gonna be able to do that…
Yuki: …I’m liking the idea of Kitty Gaku.
Tenn Kujo: …Pfft…
Gaku Yaotome: Tenn, why’re you laughing!?
Riku Nanase: Kitties..! So could it be like a video of Iori going into a cat café?
Iori Izumi: Why do I have to go to a cat café!?
Yamato Nikaido: I’m not too excited about making videos like that, either…
Tamaki Yotsuba: I wanna do a pudding tasting!
Sogo Osaka: …Personally, I’d like to rank my top 100 spices from all around the world…
Nagi Rokuya: And I shall hold a Cocona watch party!
Mitsuki Izumi: You guys aren’t bringing anything new to the table!
Iori Izumi: …Actually, I suppose animal videos do have their appeal, despite how banal they are…
Riku Nanase: Did you say something, Iori?
Iori Izumi: No, nothing.
Momo: Ahaha! Great, you’re already brainstorming ideas!
Momo: You’ve all got the right idea! We wanna see you act natural for your RabbiTubes!
Yuki: Let’s have a fun year doing this.
IDOLiSH7 & TRIGGER: Yessir!
- - - -
Riku Nanase: We’re going to be RabbiTubers for our birthday project this year..!
Sogo Osaka: All the group chats up until now were fun, so it’s kind of a shame that we won’t be doing one this year.
Mitsuki Izumi: …Fair enough. It’ll be awesome to make videos for our fans, but I wish we could have our own celebrations too!
Yamato Nikaido: It’s become kind of a tradition by now.
Nagi Rokuya: …We do not work together as much as we used to. Though I understand that it is difficult to match all our schedules…
Tamaki Yotsuba: Do we not get to eat Mikki’s cakes this year?
Mitsuki Izumi: The cakes are the one thing we’re gonna make for sure! Right, Iori!?
Iori Izumi: Yes. I’ll help, too.
Riku Nanase: Hmm… Celebrations…
Riku Nanase: Ah! Why don’t we all go somewhere together for our birthdays?
Riku Nanase: I guess we probably can’t all go… But we can get our manager to arrange it so at least some of us can hang out!
Mitsuki Izumi: Going out, huh… That does sound like a nice change of pace from all the group RabbitChats!
Yamato Nikaido: It’s a shame that we won’t all be able to go, but getting to choose a spot does make it feel more special. …You should take me to a beer brewery, by the way.
Mitsuki Izumi: Sounds like you’ve already got one in mind!
Tamaki Yotsuba: Let’s take lots of pics and videos for the guys who can’t go. We can send them over RabbitChat.
Nagi Rokuya: OH! A wonderful idea. It will make us all feel as if we are there.
Iori Izumi: I’m sure uploading them to Rabitter would make many people happy, as well.
Sogo Osaka: That sounds fun..! Let’s ask our manager about it tomorrow.
Riku Nanase: Yep! …Looks like we’re going to have pretty fun birthdays again!
- - - -
Nagi Rokuya: Yamato, Sogo! This is my first time doing pottery!
Nagi Rokuya: Though I have witnessed a posture similar to that of someone doing pottery in interviews and such...
Sogo Osaka: Politicians and commentators often pose like that for articles about them.
Sogo Osaka: Sometimes, it's almost like they really were told to mimic sitting at a pottery wheel.
Nagi Rokuya: Indeed. Many anime producers also pose like that for interviews.
Sogo Osaka: Interesting... I didn't know that technique had spread to the anime industry, as well...
Yamato Nikaido: ...Uh... Do I get to participate in this conversation yet?
Nagi Rokuya: But of course, Yamato! We are here for pottery!
Sogo Osaka: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to babble like that.
Yamato Nikaido: ...I thought our work here in Kyoto was done, so why are we at a pottery studio, exactly..?
Tsumugi Takanashi: This was the only day before your birthday that was open in all of your schedules!
Tsumugi Takanashi: We've got plenty of time before our train home leaves, and Sogo-san and Nagi-san wanted to sculpt tea cups for all of IDOLiSH7!
Nagi Rokuya: Ceramics are the essence of Japan. Show me your national spirit!
Yamato Nikaido: My national spirit...
Sogo Osaka: I thought it'd be nice if we could eat and drink from cups some of us made ourselves, even when we can't all be gathered around the same table.
Yamato Nikaido: ...I guess you've got a point there. Let's do this, then.
Yamato Nikaido: We'll save the brewery visit I'd been hoping for for some other day.
Nagi Rokuya: OH, there you go again...
Sogo Osaka: Yamato-san, you'll make four cups and bowls, while Nagi-kun and I will make three and bowls cups each.
Yamato Nikaido: Oh, okay then. Roger that.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Wait... Isn't that three sets too many?
Yamato Nikaido: You didn't think we'd forget you, our president, or Banri-san, did you? We'll make some for you guys, too.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Huh..?
Nagi Rokuya: YES! That way, we can all have yet another celebration.
Sogo Osaka: I hope you'll come visit us often.
Tsumugi Takanashi: ...T-thank you..! I didn't mean to make you work so hard for your own birthday, Yamato-san...
Yamato Nikaido: It's fine. All I need in return is that you use the cup I made, and maybe also cook me a something special in return.
Nagi Rokuya: Yamato, you are spoiling the mood.
Yamato Nikaido: Hey, even I need a reward sometimes.
Sogo Osaka: Ahaha...
Tsumugi Takanashi: I-I'll just be over here with the camera! Well then... let's begin!
Nagi, Yamato, & Sogo: Yeah..!
- - - -
Yamato Nikaido: This is actually pretty difficult...
Sogo Osaka: It's hard to get the thickness right. I feel like the strength of my fingers is off somehow...
Nagi Rokuya: Look, Yamato and Sogo! Gaze upon these gentle curves!
Yamato Nikaido: Wait, you're making Cocona, not a tea cup!
Sogo Osaka: Y-you're incredible, Nagi-kun! How did you make those hearts..?
Nagi Rokuya: OH, this is a very basic sculpting technique. Allow me to show you.
Yamato Nikaido: I thought you'd be better at this sort of thing since you're so into DIY, Sou.
Sogo Osaka: I think I'll do better if someone shows me how it's done...
Nagi Rokuya: Sogo, you do it like this.
Sogo Osaka: Whoa... It's taking shape so quickly...
Yamato Nikaido: ...That's King Pudding, not a cup.
Nagi Rokuya: I shall leave the finishing touches to you.
Tsumugi Takanashi: They're a far cry from anything you could drink out of, but still very impressive..!
Nagi Rokuya: Feel free to take pictures, Tsumugi.
Tsumugi Takanashi: I am!
Sogo Osaka: I need to do this properly. It's important!
Yamato Nikaido: Just don't show any pictures of Sou's work to Tama.
Tsumugi Takanashi: I already sent one to him..!
Yamato Nikaido: Damn, I was too late... My bad, Tama.
Yamato Nikaido: ...So why am I the only one taking this seriously, again?
Nagi Rokuya: I will put my Cocona in the kiln with the cups!
Sogo Osaka: And I'll put in my King Pudding...
Yamato Nikaido: Ugh... Hurry it up, then.
Tsumugi Takanashi: ...Ah, Yamato-san, are you starting to get the hang of it? Your cups are all nice and even, with just the right thickness and depth..!
Yamato Nikaido: Haha. Thanks. I've always had kind of a knack for this stuff.
Yamato Nikaido: How long do we have to keep these in the kiln for?
Tsumugi Takanashi: After they're done in the kiln, they still need to air dry... Which should take about a month or so, all in all! They'll mail the finished cups to us once they're done.
Yamato Nikaido: Well, at least we won't have to come back for them.
Sogo Osaka: We should think of what we'll have from these when they arrive.
Nagi Rokuya: Let us discuss it in our group chat afterwards.
Yamato Nikaido: I'd go with ochazuke, it seems like a safe enough choice.
Sogo Osaka: I thought you might suggest that. Great idea.
Nagi Rokuya: OH! I would like to have a bowl of sushi rice!
Yamato Nikaido: Ah, that one does sound nice, too... I'm starting to get hungry.
Sogo Osaka: Ahaha, same here! Let's buy some quick souvenirs for the guys and go straight home after that.
Nagi Rokuya: I look forward to selecting my lunch box at the train station.
Yamato Nikaido: You sure do take your time with that stuff.
Nagi Rokuya: Eating on the train was not a part of my country's culture, so I was very excited to find out about Japan's train lunches!
Yamato Nikaido: Yeah, I can see why. A can of beer goes well with those.
Sogo Osaka: And it's fun to see which sorts of lunches are sold in different regions.
Yamato Nikaido: Sure is.
- - - -
Yamato Nikaido: ...Time flies by when you're talking about food.
Nagi Rokuya: Sogo and I have made three sets each!
Sogo Osaka: How did you like doing pottery, Yamato-san?
Yamato Nikaido: Haha... In all honesty, it was a ton of fun. You picked this place because you knew I'm not into big and fancy stuff, right? Thanks.
Yamato Nikaido: We should bring the rest of the guys here sometime.
Sogo Osaka: We should!
Nagi Rokuya: YES!
Tsumugi Takanashi: Thank you all for showing me your pottery skills..! Let me just take one more picture of you!
Tsumugi Takanashi: Say cheese..!

A/N: This is chapter one in a series! I think it is going to be 3 parts, but if more is requested I do have an outline where I could take it to 10. (Updates on Thursdays)
Pairing: AU Psychiatrist Steve Rogers x Female Reader
Words: 3700
Summary: An interview with a charming doctor leads to more
Warnings: This chapter, mentions of violence and murder, alcohol. I HAVE NOT WARNED FOR EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. PLEASE READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Smoothing out your blazer and squaring your shoulders you rose your fist and knocked on the door.
It swung open, taking your breath away at the swiftness of the response. Your jaw dropped for a moment, but you shook the nerves away, always the professional. He was more gorgeous in person with blond hair and blue eyes. The All-American man.
“Dr. Rogers?” You asked.
“So I’ve been called.” He stepped to the side. “Please come in.”
Your eyes went up at the expanse of his office. It had a balcony going around the entire space, floor to ceiling in books. The main floor was open with a huge mahogany desk behind bright windows. There was a sitting area with two chairs, a couch, and a coffee table. On the wall hung a giant painting.
“Is that a Jackson Pollock?” You were surprised to see such a chaotic artist hung in a therapist’s office.
“I know it’s not the traditional calming image you would expect a doctor to hang, but I find it opens people up on the subconscious and allows my patients to see the beauty in madness.” His voice made the hairs on your body rise, so calm and collected.
“Are most of your patients mad?” You looked over your shoulder to see icy blue eyes taking in your face.
“We’re not here to discuss my patients Miss, that is private information.” He wagged a finger in your face before moving toward the sitting area. “I was very clear when I agreed to the interview.”
“Of course, Dr. Rogers.” You followed and sat down opposite him. “I am sure my editor went over the basics with you, but this is for a feature we do monthly on interesting people in the area. There is nothing to worry about, it is not investigative journalism, only a puff piece for our readers looking for human interest stories.”
“Yes, I am still uncertain why I was selected.” The man adjusted his tie that was tucked into a vest. He wore those clothes well. “I fear I am not that interesting.”
“You were instrumental in the capture of the Canary Killer.” You were shocked by his modesty. “The FBI has praised your work and referred to you as an essential asset even though you are not an agent. That alone makes you very fascinating.”
“The Canary Killer.” Dr. Rogers rolled his eyes. “I am not a fan of those nicknames. They devalue the lives of the victims, and criminals are not my expertise.”
“Do you mind?” You reached into your bag and pulled out a tape recorder. “I did not expect to start this soon.”
“Please.” He crossed his legs and his lips turned into a small smirk. “And tell me, why would your readers care about a murderer in Iowa? I am sure they are locally based.”
“Yes. We are out of Washington D.C., readership largely in Maryland and Virginia. The surrounding areas, but a killer like this facinates anyone regardless of region.” As his smile dropped you worried you were coming off too forward. “And, the focus of the piece is on you, not the killings. We want to know your background, your story. I am sure it is more exciting than you give yourself credit for.”
“Your dialect is strange.” He uncrossed his legs and leaned forward. “I can’t quite place where you are from.”
“I moved around a lot as a child.” You looked away from his deep stare. “Is linguistics one of your hobbies? Would you like to expand on that?”
“It is fascinating. Almost as if you have no accent at all. Very unheard of. Tell me, are you trying to disguise your voice?” His teeth ran over his lip, sending a tremble down your spine.
“Doctor, I appreciate the question, but I don’t think I could afford your hourly rate.” You weren’t used to your subjects asking you many questions. “How about you? Where were you born? What drew you to therapy?”
“Right.” His smirk returned. “I was born abroad. My parents passed when I was twelve, I became responsible for my younger sister and believe it or not we snuck in illegally.”
The doctor’s comment on your accent threw you off, especially when he himself was born abroad but had no trace of one. He continued on with his life story and you barely had to ask a question. Everything about the man was fascinating.
“After my years in general surgery I discovered that most of my patients were more concerned with the mental effects and less with the recovery. I enjoyed helping them with any resulting depression or anxiety and realized my love for the blade was second to my love of the mind.” Dr. Rogers glanced toward the window. “People are fascinating and I want to help in any way I can.”
“That is very noble of you.” The jitters you had about his attractiveness were now dwarfed compared to the intensity of his wisdom and compassion. “I know we are running low on time. Is there any personal anecdote you want to include? Wife or kids? Dog?”
His smile brightened the room as he let out a laugh.
“Unfortunately my dedication to my work has left no time for any personal life.” He rose from his seat. “Though since this is a human interest piece, I would say my main hobbies are music and cooking.”
“Wow. Even your hobbies are impressive.” You followed his lead, grabbing your recorder and hitting stop. “You don’t have any unproductive time. Never lose yourself in a television show? Read a pulp novel?”
“I do not enjoy fiction much.” He shrugged. “What is the point when the real world is so interesting?”
“I never thought about it that way.” You smiled. “Thank you for your time. As a courtesy I will send over the article before it is published, not for your approval of course, but your awareness.”
“I am sure it will be as dull as me talking about myself has been.” He held a hand toward the door.
“That is a way to put it, especially since hearing you talk about yourself was the opposite of dull.” You couldn’t find the right words to say, but that did not stop you from speaking. “You see the world through a unique lens and have had very unique experiences. Almost as if, as a species, we are lucky to have you.”
You felt like you should cringe or apologize, but something about the man made you speak your mind.
“And you must be very good at your job, because I felt comfortable saying that to you and I am not even a patient.” You stopped at the door to his office.
The two of you faced each other, his hand went for the knob, but he paused.
“You are not my patient.” Dr. Roger’s eyes glanced over your face, then stopped at your own. The two of you stared at each other and you did not look away as a chill went down your spine, the intensity of the man.
He was about to speak again when a boom landed on the door. You jumped and put your hand to your heart, your adrenaline flaring.
“I’m sorry Dr. Rogers.” The door swung open and a familiar face walked in. “But I need to see you right away.”
The new guest’s voice trailed off as he spotted you. His face scrunched and a look of disgust came over.
“What are you doing here?” Blue eyes glared into your soul.
A smirk crossed your face as you folded your arms.
“Hello Agent Barnes, always a pleasure.” You should have figured he was a patient. “I am writing a human interest piece on Dr. Rogers.”
“You talked to her?” James looked to the doctor. “About me?”
“I didn’t mean to create more problems for you to discuss.” You bit back the urge to fire a crack about his narcissism. “Thank you again Doctor. I will send you the piece in the next week or so.”
You held out your hand and watched as the blonde man shook it with hesitation.
That deep intense stare was gone. Your heart deflated as you left the office, trying to hold your head high and shoulders square. It felt like he was going to ask you out on a date for a moment, one you would have gladly expected.
The cringe you were fighting came forward as you left the swanky office building. Agent Barnes interference or not it was a stupid fantasy. This man was too good for you.
~~
Steve considered his ability to read people top notch. Even though he was the one speaking he spent the past hour studying the journalist and to say she was intriguing was an understatement.
In fact, he was interested enough he was on the verge of asking the woman to dinner.
Bucky’s apparent hatred toward the woman was not expected and Steve found himself mentally recapping the interview to see if he missed something.
Before he could assess the situation she stormed off. Her quip about Bucky being a patient was ruder than he found acceptable.
“You gave an interview to Miranda Balfour?” Bucky gripped his long dark hair as he walked into the office. “What were you thinking?”
“What?” Steve shut the door. “That was not her name.”
“Of course she gave you a fake name.” Bucky scoffed. “I hope you are prepared to have your reputation trashed. Did you think to, google whatever name she gave you?”
“I did and she checked out.” Steve's intrigue for the woman was turning to anger. “Now who are you claiming she is?”
“She is Miranda Balfour. She runs a murder blog, always posting sensational stories. She gave extensive coverage to the Canary Killer.” Bucky ran his hands over his face. “Nothing better than a gossip rag. I’m surprised you haven’t noticed her. She’s always lurking around any local crime scene. Trying to get pictures and interviews like she is a legitimate source. It is disgraceful.”
Steve could feel his body temperature start to rise. He thought about walking over to his desk and sweeping everything off, then taking an axe to the thing. He imagined the wood slowly turning into the face of Miranda Balfour as she took a whack to the head, splintering as easy as a tree stump.
“Well if I have been duped, it is nobody’s fault but my own.” Steve shut the door to his office. “What brings you by so urgently Buck?”
“The New England Butcher.” Bucky shook his head. “I stayed up late last night, going over every murder in the area that even remotely fit his MO.”
“There is one issue off the bat.” Steve took a seat in the chair, knowing Bucky preferred to pace while he spoke. “Lack of sleep.”
“Six murders in three years. Each gruesome in their own way. The randomness of the kills, the victims. It is like we were only able to string them together because he wanted us to.” Bucky stopped. “And that is what caught my attention. What about the ones he doesn’t want us to?”
Bucky sat down and dropped a file on the table. Steve was annoyed at the waste of paper when an email would have sufficed, but he indulged Bucky and picked up the file.
The first photo was of a dismembered man found in a ditch. Steve knew the date off the top of his head, July 2nd 2013. Blake Corenzo. He was a pig of a man.
“That is a murder from 2013. Blake Corenzo. He was stabbed and chopped post mortem.” James glared as Steve looked up, waiting for his punchline. “I think he was the Butcher’s first victim.”
Steve bit back a laugh with expertise.
“The brutality matches. But what was missing?” Steve was curious if the Agent was going to connect the dots.
“Nothing.” He sighed and pressed his hand to his forehead. “Or something we missed. But I have seven more bodies I believe are connected. We know that as killers go on they get lazier, think they are unwatchable, but the Butcher, he is different. We are not going to catch him on a technicality or sloppiness. He is too good.”
Steve did enjoy the flattery.
“We have to find his first kill. It always starts with someone they know. Always.” Bucky had a desperation to his voice.
“So you believe that this Blake Corenzo knew the Butcher?” Steve watched Bucky struggle to connect the dots, not realizing he was the fish on the hook in this game he was not even aware he was playing. “Have you told Anthony Stark?”
“Yes.” The air deflated out of Bucky as he fell back into the couch. “He told me mandatory session with you before I am cleared to return to work.”
“If I check my e-mail will there be one from him? Is that what it will say?” Steve appreciated the protectiveness Tony had for Bucky. In a way it was as if Stark saw Barnes’ brain as a fragile asset. One he was constantly concerned was about to break.
“It will say I can’t go back until you clear me.” Bucky tried to hide the humiliation.
A man in his 30s being controlled by his boss and therapist as if he were a child. Steve recognized something in Bucky, an equality almost. Because Tony Stark’s concern were not without merit. James Buchanan Barnes did have a brain that could operate like no other and if anyone were to catch the Butcher Steve was certain it was the Agent in front of him.
“You are obsessing again.” Steve crossed his legs. “It is not healthy. You are getting too involved. The Butcher hasn’t struck in three months and twice already this year. It’s likely he will not attack for some time. You are trying to create leads.”
“You sound like Tony.” Bucky scoffed and looked away. “When I sleep, I see their faces.”
“Whose faces?” Steve leaned in, unsure what Bucky was going to say next.
“The ones, the ones I didn’t save.” Tears glossed over Bucky’s eyes. “Not the ones who have already died. The ones who will if I don’t stop him. Their faces are blurry but they’re pleading with me.”
“People die every day. You cannot carry that guilt. It will destroy you.” Steve reached for his rx pad.
“I can’t help the people who die every day, but I can help these people. If I can stop the Butcher.” Bucky’s jaw tightened.
“You keep saying ‘I’ when it is a team effort. You are not a superhero. You cannot do this alone.” Steve wrote out a medication.
“I have to since none of you will listen to me. Not Tony, not you.” Bucky rolled his eyes. “Even Natasha told me to give it a rest.”
“Maybe that says something.” Steve handed Bucky the prescription. “That will stop the dreams. Take one before bed and get some sleep.”
“And then what?” Bucky looked up, lips parted.
“And then come and see me in the morning. Once you are rested we will have a conversation about Blake Corenzo and I will talk to Mr. Stark.” Steve watched as relief flooded Bucky’s face.
“Thanks.” He looked at the prescription before shoving it in his pocket and letting out a yawn. “And sorry, for what I said earlier about Miranda. She won’t be able to tarnish your reputation.”
“I am aware. The most salacious detail I gave her is already public knowledge.” Steve rose. “I only regret my own error in judgment. Now get some sleep.”
Bucky nodded as they walked to the door. Steve kept his calm as he let the FBI Agent out.
Then he walked back to the table and picked up the file. He set out the photos of the four crime scenes Bucky wanted to tie to the Butcher.
“Very clever Agent Barnes.” All of them were done by Steve. In a way seeing the photos was like revisiting an old friend.
Corenzo was far from Steve’s first kill though. He had watched the man use a racial slur and a racist imitation at a dry cleaner. Another rude person the world did not need.
Steve flashed back to Miranda’s comment about the human race being lucky to have him. She was right of course, on more levels than she realized. He was purging the world of the disgusting people who did not belong.
After Agent Barnes’ proclamation Miranda Balfour’s name had landed on that list.
~~
Steve was a patient man. He sometimes marked his victims for years before they met their demise.
When he got home, to what his visitor’s refered to as architectural magic, he went straight for the kitchen. It was on the level of any executive chef’s dream.
He would cook tonight. Channel his anger over the reporter, but not before adding her name to his list.
He went to the recipe drawer. It looked more like a filing cabinet, filled with Rolodexes of index cards with carefully printed ingredients and instructions. He had order them online since the entire world had gone digital.
On the rare occasion he had a guest they poked at his old fashioned nature. He remembered the first time he had Bucky over for dinner.
“You live in such a modern house, and appear a very modern man, but that recipe system reminds me of my grandmother.” Bucky laughed as he sipped his wine.
“And I bet your grandmother’s cooking was far superior to your own.” Steve raised as eyebrow as Bucky frowned.
The memory vanished as Steve pulled out the Rolodex he wanted. This one did not have recipes, it was for its original purpose, filled with business card collected over the years.
He grabbed one at random. Donna Chung. He closed his eyes and remembered her behavior, the way she was screaming at her child in the grocery store. The child could have been no more than three and was crying over not being able to drop a quarter in a donation box.
“You get nothing from that. Here I’ll buy you a candy bar instead.”
Steve followed her home that night. Googled the address and the next day walked into her real estate office. He picked up a business card and dropped her in his Rolodex. That was almost eighteen months ago.
She was not a candidate for a butcher murder. Besides, the day left Steve uninspired. But still he set her card to the side.
He picked up an empty one and wrote the name Miranda Balfour, along with the phony one she had given him and the contact e-mail. Then he closed up the Rolodex and put it back in its place.
Steve poured a glass of wine and walked over to his computer. He fired up the laptop.
Grabbing a remote he turned on the fireplace and some music as he sat on his overly plush blue sofa. Calm colors was what his interior designer recommended. He was grateful for that advice. She was someone who brought beauty to the world.
As soon as Steve typed Miranda Balfour into the search her blog popped up first thing. The title was “Miranda’s Macabre Museum”.
Steve rolled his eyes as he went to the first post. It was from two days ago.
Murder
Victim: Lawrence Engle
Death: Stab wounds
Date: April 12th, 1985
Location: Mobile, Alabama
What followed was a summary of the facts. Steve was expecting more of a tattle-tale type scenario. But he did not see anything salacious. If anything it was very matter-of-fact with little insight.
At the end there were links to photos with appropriate warnings and links to sources.
Then there was a section titled editorial.
“Here we go.” Steve readied to read the sordid opinion.
The motive in this murder was money. While the law, for the most part, disregards the motive as important to the trial my long time readers know I disagree. Until we change as a society and value human life over finances we will be doomed to see unnecessary killings as this continue to happen. That does not mean the killer should be pardoned for his crime because society as a whole is at fault. On the contrary. He is part of the problem and should be punished.
Sentence: Death by lethal injection.
“Interesting.” Steve found his mind going back to his initial opinion of Miranda or whatever her name was.
He noticed a search option on her blog and typed in his name. Several posts on Canary victims came up, but he found he was only mentioned in the source articles or the summary.
He did the same for Agent Barnes and saw the results light up. He scrolled the posts for the highlighted name and came across a murder from three years ago.
Editorial: The lead Agent on this case has shown textbook narcissism. His attempt to relate to the killer to solve the crime failed here, because the murder was not about him, but he found a way to make it so. The last victim’s death would have been preventable if Agent Barnes listened to anyone but himself.
“That explains Bucky’s dislike.” Steve shut the laptop and pinched his eyes shut.
When he googled the first name, multiple stories came up that were as she said human interest pieces. Did she lie just to get the interview? Pose as the other woman?
Lie. What difference did it make? She was a liar and had earned a spot in his Rolodex.
This one felt personal though. In a way Steve did not enjoy. She made him feel...comfortable. Or made him feel something. The way her eyes were so inquisitive and she seemed to hang on every work with genuine interest. When in fact he was intentionally trying to bore her.
That would not stand. This woman would not sit in the Rolodex for years. Her time would be shorter. Steve stood up from the couch and went back to the kitchen. He picked up Donna Chung’s card and returned it with the other, instead setting the card he’d just drafted on the counter.
He would start tomorrow.
~~

I really don’t want to start a discourse™, but I want you to know that I really appreciate how you write joe and Nicky in deo volente. So many of the fics I’ve read have placed yusef in the role of more sexually experienced and less devoted to god, while Nicky is depicted as an inexperienced and virginal priest/knight/monk and so forth and so on. Your narrative of joe out there rescuing people and being faithful, while Nicky looks back on his life of gambling and pleasures of the flesh ...(1/?)
Not to say that there’s anything wrong with either, obviously. I love guilty priest Nicky and repressed Nicky and p much every Nicky. But in the vast array of fics out there, it’s rare to see the opposite. Not that you’re working in a binary morally good/religious vs. not way. Your writing in the fic is really subtle and and your characterizations reveal a lot of depth. I just think it’s cool to see Nicky, average second son of a duke, drinking and gambling and feeling terribly guilty (2/?)
Guilty about the crusades and the fucking horror of crusade 1 without being excessively devout. Just an average dude. Not some paragon of virtue (btw, I’m on chapter 2 of the fic, so I don’t know how much your characterization changes moving forward. You have a lovely ability to combine your incredible knowledge of history, your beautiful writing, and these intimate details of the characters that make them fit— fit the canon and fit the history. (3/? Shit I’m sorry this had gotten way too long)
I enjoy the way you’ve really inserted us into the quotidian aspect of history. Aaaaaanyway— the discourse that I was afraid of: I think that a lot of fans of the movie that are generating fan content (tysfm to all of you beauties, btw 🙏🙏♥️) are westerners (which is a whole nother kettle of fish) and that carries a sort of ignorance about the Muslim world in the Middle Ages and this desire to simplify Europe as “Christian” “fighters for faith” etc. (4/? Fuuuuck. One(??) more)
And when we do that, we end up as characterizing the brown people as “not that”. The thing I love about this fandom is that people are definitely down on the crusades. I feel like all the fic I’ve read has been particularly negative about those wars, but the thing I love about your fic is that you don’t just say war is bad because people died and it was despicable and this pious white dude says so and this one brown person agrees. (5/6, I see the end in sight I swear it)
Instead you give us a larger cast of Muslims and Arabs and really flesh them out and give them opinions and different interpretations of faith, and I really appreciate that. The crusades were terrible, and we know this because these regular dudes who struggle with their different faiths and lives say so. And I just. I think that’s really great. Also, I fucking love yusef’s mom. I feel like more people would be accepting of the gift in this fashion and I think she’s lovely and (god damn it 6/7)
Aaaaaaaand. The bit where yusef returns and she’s already gone breaks my fucking heart. Also the moment where he’s like “I’m not sure about Abraham’s god, but my mothers god is worth my faith”?? Just really fucking great. So. Excellent fic. Excellent characters. Excellent not-being-accidentally-biased-towards-white-Christians. That is what I came here to say. Thank you so much for your amazing stories. I love them and I love history. Sorry about the rambling. idek how I wrote so much. (7/7)
Epilogue: tl;dr: you’re great.
Oh man! What a huge and thoughtful comment (which will in turn provoke a long-ass response from me, so…) I absolutely agree that no matter what fandom, I don’t do Discourse TM; I just sit in my bubble and stay in my lane and do my own thing and create content I enjoy. And I don’t even think this is that so much as just… general commentary on character and background? So obviously all of this should be read as my own personal experience and choices in writing DVLA, and that alone. I really appreciate you for saying that you love a wide range of fan creators/fanworks and you’re not placing one over another, you understand that fans have diverse ranges of backgrounds/experience with history and other cultures when they create content, and that’s not the same for everyone. So I just think that’s a great and respectful way to start things off.
First, as a professional historian who has written a literal PhD thesis on the crusades, I absolutely understand that many people (and regular fans) will not have the same privilege/education/perspective that I do, and that’s fine! They should not be expected to get multiple advanced degrees to enjoy a Netflix movie! But since I DO have that background, and since I’ve been working on the intellectual genealogy of the crusades (and the associated Christian/Muslim component, whether racially or religiously) since I was a master’s student, I have a lot of academic training and personal feelings that inform how I write these characters. Aside from my research on all this, my sister lives in an Islamic country and her boyfriend is a Muslim man; I’ve known a lot of Muslims and Middle Easterners; and especially with the current political climate of Islamophobia and the reckoning with racism whether in reality or fandom, I have been thinking about all this a lot, and my impact on such.
Basically: I love Nicky dearly, but I ADORE Joe, and as such, I’m protective of him and certainly very mindful of how I write him. Especially when the obvious default for westerners in general, fandom-related or otherwise, is to write what you are familiar with (i.e. the European Christian white character) and be either less comfortable or less confident or sometimes less thoughtful about his opposing number. I have at times tangentially stumbled across takes on Joe that turn me into the “eeeeeeeh” emoji or Dubious Chrissy Teigen, but I honestly couldn’t tell you anything else about them because I was like, “nope not for me” and went elsewhere rather than do Discourse (which is pretty much a waste of time everywhere and always makes people feel bad). This is why I’m always selective about my fan content, but especially so with this ship, because I have SO much field-specific knowledge that I just have to make what I like and which suits my personal tastes. So that is what I do.
Obviously, there’s a troublesome history with the trope of “sexually liberate brown person seduces virginal white character into a world of Fleshly Decadence,” whether from the medieval correlation of “sodomite” and “Saracen,” or the nineteenth-century Orientalist depictions of the East as a land variously childishly simplistic, societally backward, darkly mysterious and Exotic, or “decadent” (read: code for sexually unlike Western Europe, including the spectrum of queer acts). So when I was writing DVLA, I absolutely did not want to do that and it’s not to my taste, but I’m not going to whip out a red pen on someone else writing a story that broadly follows those parameters (because as I said, I stay in my lane and don’t see it anyway). Joe to me is just such an intensely complex and lovely Muslim character that that’s the only way I feel like I can honestly write him, and I absolutely love that about him. So yeah, any depiction of hypersexualizing him or making him only available for the sexual use and education of the white character(s) is just... mmm, not for me.
For example, I stressed over whether it was appropriate to move his origin from “somewhere in the Maghreb” to Cairo specifically, since Egypt, while it IS in North Africa, is not technically part of the Maghreb. I realize that Marwan Kenzari’s family is Tunisian and that’s probably why they chose it, to honor the actor’s heritage, but on the flip side… “al-Kaysani” is also a specifically Ismai’li Shia name (it’s the name of a branch of it) and the Fatimids (the ruling dynasty in Jerusalem at the time of the First Crusade) were well-known for being the only Ismai’li Shia caliphate. (This is why the Shi’ites still ancestrally dislike Saladin for overthrowing it in 1174, even if Saladin is a huge hero to the rest of the Islamic world.) Plus I really wanted to use medieval Cairo as Joe’s homeland, and it just made more sense for an Ismai’li Shia Fatimid from Cairo (i.e. the actual Muslim denomination and caliphate that controlled Jerusalem) to be defending the Holy City because it was personal for him, rather than a Sunni Zirid from Ifriqiya just kind of turning up there. Especially due to the intense fragmentation and disorganization in the Islamic world at the time of the First Crusade (which was a big part of the reason it succeeded) and since the Zirids were a breakaway group from the Fatimids and therefore not very likely to be militarily allied with them. As with my personal gripes about Nicky being a priest, I decided to make that change because I felt, as a historian, that it made more sense for the character. But I SUPER recognize it as my own choices and tweaks, and obviously I’m not about to complain at anyone for writing what’s in graphic novel/bonus content canon!
That ties, however, into the fact that Nicky has a clearly defined city/region of origin (Genoa, which has a distinct history, culture, and tradition of crusading) and Joe is just said to be from “the Maghreb” which…. is obviously huge. (I.e. anywhere in North Africa west of Egypt all the way to Morocco.) And this isn’t a fandom thing, but from the official creators/writers of the comics and the movie. And I’m over here like: okay, which country? Which city? Which denomination of Islam? You’ve given him a Shia name but then point him to an origin in Sunni Ifriqiya. If he’s from there, why has he gone thousands of miles to Jerusalem in the middle of a dangerous war to help his religious/political rivals defend their territory? Just because he’s nice? Because it was an accident? Why is his motivation or reason for being there any less defined or any less religious (inasmuch as DVLA Nicky’s motive for being on the First Crusade is religious at all, which is not very) than the white character’s? In a sense, the Christians are the ones who have to work a lot harder to justify their presence in the Middle East in the eleventh century at all: the First Crusade was a specifically military and offensive invasion launched at the direct behest of the leader of the Western Roman church (Pope Urban II.) So the idea that they’re “fighting for the faith” or defending it bravely is…
Eeeeh. (Insert Dubious Chrissy Teigen.)
But of course, nobody teaches medieval history to anyone in America (except for Bad Game of Thrones History Tee Em), and they sure as hell don’t teach about the crusades (except for the Religious Violence Bad highlight reel) so people don’t KNOW about these things, and I wish they DID know, and that’s why I’m over here trying to be an academic so I can help them LEARN it, and I get very passionate about it. So once again, I entirely don’t blame people who have acquired this distorted cultural impression of the crusades and don’t want to do a book’s worth of research to write a fic about a Netflix movie. I do hope that they take the initiative to learn more about it because they’re interested and want to know more, since by nature the pairing involves a lot of complex religious, racial, and cultural dynamics that need to be handled thoughtfully, even if you don’t know everything about it. So like, basically all I want is for the Muslim character(s) to be given the same level of respect, attention to detail, background story, family context, and religious diversity as any of the white characters, and Imma do it myself if I have to. Dammit.
(I’m really excited to hear your thoughts on the second half of the fic, especially chapter 3 and chapter 6, but definitely all of it, since I think the characters they’re established as in the early part of the fic do remain true to themselves and both grow and struggle and go through a realistic journey with their faith over their very long lives, and it’s one of my favorite themes about DVLA.)
Anyway, about Nicky. I also made the specific choice to have him be an average guy, the ordinary second son of a nobleman who doesn’t really know what he’s doing with his life and isn’t the mouthpiece of Moral Virtue in the story, since as he himself realizes pretty quick, the crusades and especially the sack/massacre of Jerusalem are actually horrific. I’ve written in various posts about my nitpicking gripes with him being a priest, so he’s not, and as I said, I’m definitely avoiding any scenario where he has to Learn About The World from Joe. That is because I want to make the point that the people on the crusades were people, and they went for a lot of different reasons, not all of which were intense personal religious belief. The crusades were an institution and operated institutionally. Even on the First Crusade, where there were a lot of ordinary people who went because of sincere religious belief, there was the usual bad behavior by soldiers and secular noblemen and people who just went because it was the thing to do. James Brundage has an article about prostitution and miscegenation and other sexual activity on the First Crusade; even at the height of this first and holy expedition, it was happening. So Nicky obviously isn’t going to be the moral exemplar because a) the crusades are horrific, he himself realizes that, and b) it’s just as historically accurate that he wouldn’t be anyway. Since the idea is that medieval crusaders were all just zealots and ergo Not Like Us is dangerous, I didn’t want to do that either. If we think they all went because they were all personally fervent Catholics and thus clearly we couldn’t do the same, then we miss a lot of our own behavior and our parallel (and troubling) decisions, and yeah.
As well, I made a deliberate choice to have Nicky’s kindness (which I LOVE about him, it’s one of my favorite things, god how refreshing to have that be one of the central tenets of a male warrior character) not to be something that was just… always there and he was Meek and Good because a priest or whatever else. Especially as I’ve gotten older and we’ve all been living through these ridiculous hellyears (2020 is the worst, but it’s all been general shit for a while), I’ve thought more and more about how kindness is an active CHOICE and it’s as transgressive as anything else you can do and a whole lot more brave than just cynicism and nihilism and despair. As you’ll see in the second half of the fic, Nicky (and Joe) have been through some truly devastating things and it might be understandable if they gave into despair, but they DON’T. They choose to continue to be good people and to try and to actively BE kind, rather than it being some passive default setting. They struggle with it and it’s raw and painful and they’re not always saints, but they always come down on the side of wanting to keep doing what they’re doing, and I… have feelings about that.
Anyway, this is already SUPER long, so I’ll call it quits for now. But thank you so much for this, because I love these characters and I love the story I created for them in DVLA, since all this is personal to me in a lot of ways, and I’m so glad you picked up on that.

January Art Contest 2021!
The new year is here and what better way to celebrate the arrival of 2021 (and this blog hitting 7k followers) than with an art contest! It’s been a while since I’ve run an art contest on this blog. In fact, the previous art contest happened almost two years ago.
Theme:
Design an Alolan or Galarian Form for a Gen 4 Pokemon
This art contest is going to be Gen 4 themed! For years Sinnoh fans have begged GameFreak for remakes. Some fans were so desperate they made pentagrams in an attempt to summon Diamond/Pearl news. The year 2021 marks the 15th anniversary of the release of Diamond/Pearl as well as the 25th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise. So, a lot of fans are hopeful that the time for Sinnoh remakes has finally arrived.
To follow the hype of possible Sinnoh remakes, this art contest will be focusing on Pokemon introduced in Gen 4. No Pokemon from other generations will be allowed (Sorry, Pikachu!). Your goal is to design an Alolan or Galarian form for a Pokemon originally discovered in the Sinnoh region. Any Gen 4 Pokemon is eligible; even if it is Mythical or Legendary!
I can’t wait to see what you came up with!
How to Submit:
Submissions are open as of me posting this and will be open until January 31st at 6 PM PST. Here are the two ways you can submit your entry to me:
Submissions Box: My submissions box is open and will accept your art contest entries. If you use this method, please select the tags “Art Contest” and “Art Contest Entry” before sending it in.
Post on your Blog: If you don’t want to submit your entry directly to me, you can post your entry on your own blog and use the @ symbol to mention me in your post so that I can see it and reblog it to my blog.
Rules/Notes:
You may submit one entry. Please choose between making an Alola OR Galar form; not both.
You aren’t required to color in your entry. Design is what’s most important!
Any form of art is alright! Whether it’s traditional, digital, or drawn in sand somehow.
A Pokedex entry for your Alola/Galar Form aren’t required; but they’re cool so feel free to make one if you want!
Do NOT steal/copy someone else’s Alola/Galar fakemon designs or art. You’ll be disqualified if you break this rule.
Only Pokemon introduced in Gen 4 will be accepted in this art contest. Submissions that are of Pokemon from other generations won’t be eligible.
Entries must be sent in by January 31st at 6 PM PST. No later submissions will be accepted.
You can submit your entry anonymously via my submissions box; however, if you’re anonymous, you can’t be eligible to receive any prizes.
Submissions I receive will be posted periodically throughout the contest. It may take a while for me to post your submission. If you want to check to make sure I received your entry, feel free to shoot me a message.
Alright! Let’s get this show on the road. Submissions are now open! Let’s see what you guys got! If you have any more questions, feel free to send me a message.

Jin Norizuki’s Birthday PriZoom 7/18/2021
Oh the things I do for Jin Norizuki
That was SUCH an experience. I had a lot of fun!!
Main takeaway is that I am now acutely aware of when to YO in a song
(Okay so this is my first time attending a prizoom (or even any kinpri screening outside of Luna’s sss rabbit sessions!) so this is all entirely new to me and I can’t really compare it to much, but I figured that it’d be good to write up a report of sorts to fill in for Luna in a way!)
The prizooms are also accessible to everyone and don’t require any Japanese info confirmation!! If you’re interested in attending please go and support kinpri!!!
(Note: I think about Jin wayyyy too much and interpret them as nonbinary, so I use they/them pronouns for Jin. It’s just automatic for me at this point and feels weird otherwise haha so I’ll be doing that in this)
Jin is my all time favorite character and love of my life who I’m extremely delusional about so when a prizoom was announced for their birthday I went INSANE because I didn’t expect Jin’s birthday to be acknowledged AT ALL given how they’re usually excluded/treated like a side character (+ kinpri’s been putting out little to no content lately anyways....haha....). I was waiting in anticipation ever since it was announced (around June 6th) and even put in a time-off request for my work the day of its announcement just so I could attend!!!! ........ You can imagine my frustration at kinpri waiting until the very last minute to put out details about Jin’s prizoom ^^;
💙 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙
Also!! I’m a complete ~ foreigner ~ and managed to get tickets perfectly fine with my American credit card (and putting in some very obviously Not-An-Actual-Resident-Of-Japan address info...)! So if anyone’s curious about attending a prizoom but worried about region-locking, it’s possible! Very possible! If you’re interested in it, please go! You don’t need to have a Japanese phone number/credit card/address/etc. to purchase PriZoom tickets on RakutenTicket! It’s such an experience! If you need any help buying tickets then I’d be more than happy to assist!! Please support the PriZoom screenings and help increase the demand for more kinpri content!!!!!!!!!!!! I will personally become a living prizoom advertisement
(Also if any kinpri staff find this: I’m sorry for not respecting rules this time but I just wanted to provide a detailed account of the prizoom event and encourage participation for other foreign fans! I won’t do this again!!!)
💙 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙
I only attended the first and third showings (consisting of the first movie and Over the Sunshine!) because I wanted to see the new/not currently archived content (the second/pride the hero showing’s bonus was just Jin’s birthday video by Joji which I already revisit little too much ahaha). I also went to the chat-only rooms because I wasn’t very confident that I wouldn’t be awkward with my nonexistent cheering experience and intent to just observe what its like (despite knowing that the cheering rooms are more fun based on what Luna said haha). That, and I was planning on using the EXTREMELY OBNOXIOUS soundboard of ABSOLUTE CHAOS for everything since I have issues with voice dysphoria and figured it’d be good to stick to the room with that normalized as the one and only cheering method so participating would be a little less annoying to others, since we’d all have the same idea ^^;
I’m more active on twitter and follow/am mutuals with pretty much anybody who likes Jin enough to post about them, so it was cool seeing almost everyone there! At least half of them tweeted about this being their first prizoom haha. Jin’s birthday was also promoted as a good introduction to prizooms since the first showing was set at a price point of 718 yen instead of the usual 1,760 yen? So, lots of first timers attending! I guess most people had the same thought process as me about the whole insecure-about-not-being-used-to-proper-cheering/using-their-mic thing? Because most of my twitter following ended up in the chat-only rooms with me! Fun!
Also interesting how most people chose the male voice option for the cheering soundboard feature since there’s actually only 2 men who love Jin like that (I’m included in that number!!) in the Jin-obsessed twitter circle. I guess it was because it sounds kinda Joji-ish? and therefore fitting for an event dedicated to Jin! What with them being meant for each other and all.... Plus being Joji is just a fun way to play off having issues about using your own voice (I... project onto Joji a lot.)
👆 👆 👆
Okay I actually typed up all of the above during the second showing (since I wasn’t occupied attending that one) and everyone had the same train of thought and was definitely being Joji. You know that one “song” in Over the Sunshine- Glorious Schwarz- consisting of Joji just going wild infodumping for 3.5 minutes? Yeah EVERYONE who selected the male voice option was spamming 「おれもー!」/ “ME TOO!!!” during that (including me!). So it was like:
“I weighed 4646 grams at birth! ☆”
“MMMMEMEEMEMMT MEE ME MEEE EMME ME ME TOO M M ME TOO”
SO OBNOXIOUS. I LOVE IT. EVERYONE SHARING THE SAME BRAINCELL. THE JOJI BRAINCELL.
💙
The highlight of the prizoom (in my opinion) was when some guy repeatedly hit よっ!/ YO! to the music in the first movie, which then led to everyone having a collective ~ Realization ~
After that happened, everybody joined in and started YO!-ing along in the other lives. Beautiful.
(Blurred recording of Dramatic Love and Showcase Night just so YO!u can see what I mean.)
(I only did those two to test screen recording after failing to archive the first Jin bonus while using the soundboard feature in the first showing, initially I didn’t intend to record anything but the bonuses and will not be doing that anymore. If you attend, don’t be like me or worse!!!! Please!! I’ll delete these if needed/after a few weeks. Also just wanted to mention that Koi no Royal Straight Flush is up there in Kinpri’s Most YO!-able songs)
I love this soundboard feature. Sounds like hell. Prizooms are truely a new form of art because of it. Amazing how cheering screenings have evolved over a pandemic. Music feels empty to me without the YO!s now. After this I ended up listening to the entire kinpri discography so I could determine the YO!ability of each song. Not sure if every prizoom is like that? But I really want to go to more showings just for the community experience! I’m morbidly curious as to how many people would try to YO! to Platonic Sword. I considered going to Rei’s because they’re showing Shiny Rose Stars, but I probably won’t though since money and sleep are things (They really should make tickets no more than 1,000 yen.... they’re zoom meetings with audio problems....THE AUDIO ISSUES ARE FUN THOUGH! YOU CAN SPAM “GANBATTE” WITH EVERYONE!!) Plus while I do like every kinpri character, none of the street boys are really my favorites and going to every showing regardless of character would be a lot. I assumed that I was only going to try attending Joji’s until they announced that they were gonna do something for Jin!! So if you want to see what it’s like PLEASE get tickets and experience it for yourself!! It’s so much more fun participating !!!! Relying on 1-2 people to post event summaries isn’t exactly consistent coverage of every prizoom either!
\ よっ!/ \ よっ!/ \ よっ!/
So much of this is a community experience that you just have to see for yourself! It’s really cool seeing people go all out for their favorites and just going wild. Notable participants include:
- Two separate people just working out the entire time (one of them doing “Prism Exercise” meaning very high effort full-body cheering and dancing? It was really impressive seeing them go all-out for such a long time!)
- Two (2!) Ai cosplayers!!! One attending the prizoom with a Jin cosplayer!!
- The lady who cosplayed Jin in their cute green pre-retirement prism star outfit WITH A HUGE JIN PUPPET IN THE SAME STYLE AS THE SHUFFLE PUPPETS IN THE STAGEPLAY!!!
- That one person who just had a Minato fish head on the entire time (?!)
- A Victoria cosplayer who showed off a really nice!! drawing of Jin they did during the participant showcase at the end of the screenings
- The person with a REALLY CUTE!!!!! homemade Jin plushie!!
- Two people who attended with 3D/vtuber style models of the Go Go Glorious! (YMT29 subunit) members: Noel Tokyo and Mikado Shibuya (who also had a model of Ai!)
- A really cute Joji vtuber model!
💙 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙
The bonuses were Jin’s birthday video from 2016 and a birthday message of sorts from Jin!
I actually didn’t manage to properly archive the first one as intended because things went horribly wrong so I ended up with nothing but just a terrible (said affectionately) little recording of the soundboard I linked earlier. But whatever I shouldn’t be doing that anyways. Hopefully kinpri includes that and the other prizoom bonuses in something later.... the thought of any content being stuck as lost media terrifies me. I don’t have a good enough memory or a high enough Japanese proficiency level to type it out but it wasn’t particularly analyzable or anything (telling that to myself to make me feel better about losing it). Just the usual Jin being dramatic and going on an evil monologue. Jin being evil ASMR. I lovingly burned another one of Jin’s evil laughs into my mind too so there’s that.
For the 3rd showing bonus however I did not fail though it’s arguably the less interesting bonus of the two since it’s unvoiced. I really love Jin’s voice. Big sexy. Actual dialogue is pretty similar to each other from what I’ve gathered (ending with one of Jin’s cute little アーーーッハッハッハッ!!!!!’s (the text effect for the unvoiced bonus was an appreciated detail!).
(I’m not very confident in my ability to provide a good translation so I’ll just not embarrass myself)
“ AAAaAAaHAHAAHAAa ~ ! ! ! ! ! ! ! “
💙
Yes Jin I’ll support you in the future-!!! ヾ(>▽ <、 )
I’ll never not be obsessed but it’d still be nice to have more substantial content to gush about and do that with.... Kinpri come back and release an anime continuation.... give me the Jin plot development....kinpri come back my happiness is a little too reliant on you
After the showings you get an email asking for feedback which is cool! I’ve been waiting to complain about how 法月 is written as Noriduki instead of Norizuki for the longest time but I never had a chance until now haha. Makes it so painful for me to buy Jin merch. Also begged for an anime continuation. I wonder how much they take into account feedback? I guess I’ll see when/if they start writing Jin’s name how it’s supposed to be.
ANYWAYS
IF YOU WANT TO GO TO A PRIZOOM, DO IT!
Prism shows really are best experienced with a community!!! If you like kinpri it’s a GREAT OPPORTUNITY to experience what a cheering screening is like with the Japanese fanbase from the comfort of your very own home which is most likely nowhere near Japan!! Everyone should experience prism shows!!!! I have no regrets and I’m still so hyped from the prism sparkle!!!
ANYBODY CAN ATTEND AND BUY TICKETS EVEN WITHOUT JAPANESE INFORMATION!!!
\\ GLORIOUS SCHWARZ! //
#king of prism#jin norizuki#Err try not to spread around my recordings too much#Dont want the staff thinking badly of foreigners and region locking things haha#Kinpri_pr didn't even blur out their recording of the prizooms like me and they record everything for promo purposes anyways#But I'll probably remove mine after a bit anyways#me and my very concerning crush on jin#using joji as a self insert

Chapter 21: File Not Found!? A Negative Missing Number!
This week’s nega-evolution was designed by @dai-rokuten-maou !
Guest appearances by Fanfancures by @salsasprecure and @bubblemahouhub !
“Hnnnngh…”
With a grunt, Alice stretched herself as she leaned back in her chair, taking off her glasses briefly to rub her eyes. She got screen headaches much more quickly these days; she figured it was just a sign of getting older. But she still had more to add to her database; how could she possibly continue to be on top of her research into pokemon health if she didn’t keep up with the new information on nega-evolution provided by the Precure?
A slight rumbling noise came from her lap, as she looked down to see Penumbra staring curiously back up at her; the Umbreon had been disturbed from its slumber when she stretched.
“Oh…sorry,” she apologized softly, gently scratching her companion under the chin. “Though…seeing you sleepy like that makes me realize I should probably get some rest, too.”
She looked back to her computer and navigated to the start menu, noting the computer wanted to update before shutting down. “Alright…there we go.” She selected the proper option before turning off the monitor, picking up Penumbra in her arms as she stood up. She couldn’t stop learning, now…for the sake of both people and Pokemon. And for the sake of the group’s new, reluctant ally in the form of a highly dangerous escaped genetic experiment, but he wasn’t there that evening.
As she prepared to crawl into bed that evening, she stopped to lower the blinds on her window, obscuring her from the prying eyes outside.
=====
“Alice Pierce, pokemon researcher specializing in the field of pokemon health and medicine….” Bedlam muttered, arms crossed as he went over his gathered information aloud while lounging in a tree. “Yeah, I can see why they’d look to her for guidance.”
“There you are!” Ataxia appeared on an upper branch, sitting daintily and looking displeased. “Return at once. Lord Tumult has informed us all of some strategic changes. All of us, that is, except for you.”
“I’m assuming the changes aren’t all that different from the old strategies,” Bedlam shrugged, “Nega-evolve pokemon. Be defeated by a bunch of little girls. Swear revenge. Repeat.”
Ataxia huffed. “If only you’d put a little bit more enthusiasm into this. Once Dys has enough sustenance to breach the worlds, we can expand, and create the paradise meant for us! Does that not appeal to you at all!? Don’t you want to succeed!? Don’t you want a world where everyone’s as wayward and lost as those Tumult has brought into his service? Where we can all be brought together by Dys, and never struggle or worry again?”
“Quit with the preaching. Of course I wanna succeed,” Bedlam replied, “But frankly, I find it just a bit odd that Tumult hasn’t lifted a finger to do anything.”
“Tumult answers directly to Dys!”
“Whom none of us have seen up close. How do we know Tumult isn’t lying, or trying to screw us over so he looks better?”
Ataxia sputtered. “A-are you…are you questioning your very mission, Bedlam!?”
“I’m trying to figure out a new way, without Tumult. I’m going to strike at the heart of the Precure on this island….and if it works, then we can repeat the strategy across this world…”
Ataxia watched him in silence for a moment. Then, she sat down next to him. “Well, then…be a team player. Tell me what you’ve learned so far, won’t you?”
Bedlam looked back at her, briefly surprised. Then, he nodded.
===
“Ready, and—!” Naomi set the volleyball, before leaping up as a mischievous glint flashed in her eyes, staring down Kailani opposite her.
Kailani, meanwhile, froze. “I’m beginning to think I made a mistake—“
“—SPIKE!” Naomi slammed her fist into the ball, smashing it down into Kailani’s head as she let out an unladylike squawk and fell over into the sand. The girls were playing out on the beach on a weekend day, having finished some difficult exams (and balancing that with battling nega-evolutions). It had been about a week since the previous incident, and though the girls had been keeping the island safe, nega-evolutions were still cropping up across the globe, and Rotomi hadn’t shown any new developments ability-wise, despite continuing to absorb the nega-energy left behind after each purification.
“Kailani! Are you alright?” Fae called from the blanket where she sat with Asuka and Clefable; Asuka was focused on a tablet in her hands, while Clefable was sunning herself.
“I’m…okay…!” Kailani called out, finally sitting up and rubbing her head. “Come to think of it, anyone know where Raichu is?”
“He’s over there,” Naomi pointed, seeing Raichu surfing with his tail on some small waves out on the water, Rotomi flitting after him. “Looks like he got tired of watching us.”
“Poor guy…I’m sure he misses the waves in Alola; they were much larger than these. We used to surf together.”
“I’m much more of a windsurfing person, myself,” Naomi said, “Anyway, you wanna try again? I won’t spike anymore.” She held out her hand.
“Yeah, let’s try again…” Kailani accepted the hand offered to her, standing up.
Back with Fae and Asuka, the former glanced to the latter. “You seem really focused on something. You haven’t even let any of your pokemon out like you said you would.”
“Huh? Oh! Ohh!!” Asuka hurriedly took out two pokeballs, releasing her Cyndaquil and Scizor. “I should shuffle my team more…I’d release the whole team but we shouldn’t crowd the beach.”
“What’s on your mind? You’ve been glued to your tablet…” Fae tipped her head a bit as Asuka glanced back at the tablet.
“It’s…this news from the Galar region. A nega-evolved dynamax pokemon appeared.”
“Dynamax!? Those are huge, aren’t they!? That must have been absolutely massive once it nega-evolved!”
“It was stopped by two Cures—Cure Monarch and Cure Phantasm. What luck they showed up…”
“Nega-evolved and dynamaxed…the Cures in Galar must really have it tough.”
“You’re telling me…” Asuka frowned as she looked back at the article on the screen. “And we already know that they can nega-evolve people…”
Fae watched her face for a bit, trying to read her expression. “It’s okay, Asuka. I’m scared too. We’re all scared.”
“We just…need to go over all the information we have,” Asuka muttered. “Maybe…maybe I’ll feel a bit better after we do that.”
Asuka always preferred cold, hard facts. She liked being well-informed before making decisions. Being a Precure hadn’t always given her the luxury of that, but since they seemed to have some downtime, it was time to catch up.
Nega-Evolution was spreading like a disease.
More Precure were popping up, as if her world was creating antibodies, of a sort, to combat it.
Darkness was a sickness…and they were the cure for it. It made sense. To her, anyway.
As she was pondering this, Fae got an idea.
“I’ve got it!” Fae tapped a fist in her palm. “Why don’t we go to Dr. Pierce’s place later and ask to see her collected notes? I know she’s been trying to keep things organized for us…”
A rustling sound came from Fae’s bag as Rotomi burst out of it. “I need her to update her database from the Cure Dex anyway!”
Asuka looked at the pair of them, as a smile began to cross her features. “That…would help a lot.”
===
Meanwhile, in Johto…
“Brace!” Cure Faith shouted—the trio of Sacred Beast Precure crossed their arms in front of them to absorb the blow of a shockwave caused by a Nega-Stantler, skidding back from the impact. The beast leered at them with a piercing, enraged glare, its sharpened, hooked antlers ready to gore anyone who got too close. It was rather small for a nega-evolution, but was still larger than the average Stantler; this beast stood about one story tall, and was making up for its smaller stature with pure rage. It dug a hoof into the ground angrily, before charging.
“Shining—“ with a twirl, Cure Cascade sent a jet of water toward it to force it back, “—Torrent!”
“How ‘bout this!?” Flash shouted, and with the snap of her fingers, she electrified the jet of water. A gruntlike, pained roar emitted from the nega-evolution, but as the jet of water ended, the creature still stood, its antlers beginning to glow with a sinister aura.
“That’s a problem…!” Faith ran forward, before digging her fingers into the earth with unnatural strength and hurling a large chunk of solid earth at the beast—not only did the chunk break into smaller pieces as the incoming blast from its antlers was fired, but the chunks smashed into Nega-Stantler’s head, causing it to stagger.
“Nice!” Flash pumped a fist, “About time we caught it off-guard, right?”
“Let’s hurry!” Faith turned to face the other two. They shared a nod, holding out their hands as three large, golden, intricate fans appeared in their hands.
“Open!” They declared in unison, opening the fans with the snap of their wrists. “Miracle Matsuri Fans!”
“Precure!” They began to dance a choreographed routine, with grand, sweeping gestures, the fans seeming to leave trails of light as they moved. “Miracle Matsuri Refresh!”
In a brilliant flash of sparkles, Nega-Stantler was defeated, the original Stantler left dizzily standing in its place. Shaking the dizziness away, it approached the Precure, seeming to understand the situation and nuzzling Faith before giving her a hearty lick on the face.
“Ack—!” Faith made a face, as it scampered off into the brush.
“Done and done.” Flash dusted off her hands, before flipping her massive, swirling ponytail.
“At least it wasn’t more than one this time…” Cascade rubbed her temple with a hand.
“Wait, what about the Shadowlings our pokemon were dealing with!?” Faith yelped in realization.
“Grrrowf!” A voice declared, as Faith’s Growlithe ran toward them, joined by an excited Azumarill; Noctowl swooped down to join them.
“Oh, thank goodness….!” Faith knelt down to catch Growlithe in her arms, sighing in relief.
“Come on, we better hurry back to the National Park,” Flash grinned as she ruffled Noctowl’s feathers. “We might be able to catch the end of the Bug-Off! We can update the group doc later!”
It seemed, even without someone like Rotomi to guide them, the Precure across the other regions were developing their own ways to learn and keep track—be it with technology or simply word of mouth. As the girls reverted to their true forms and headed back toward the National Park, the girl who was Cure Cascade was already pulling out her phone, accessing where they kept their notes, eager to jot down the information before it had a chance to leave her memory.
===
“It’s a lot more to look at than I expected…” Asuka admitted as she sat before Dr. Pierce’s computer. The Cure Dex was connected nearby, Rotomi humming contentedly inside.
“It’s not just notes we’ve gathered,” Dr. Pierce explained, “I’ve been keeping up with news headlines, and speaking to colleagues located in other regions to learn about their own experiences. Don’t try and overwhelm yourself, Asuka; it’s best to do things in bits and pieces.”
“Hang in there,” Kailani reassured her, “If you find anything new or interesting, let us know! We’d hate to crowd around you while you’re trying to read. We’ll just help Dr. Pierce around the house.”
Asuka looked over her shoulder at them, giving a smile and a nod. With that, she got to reading, looking at files that had names that piqued her interest—she was fortunate that most of them were fairly easy to read; they didn’t use a lot of complicated language like she was expecting. All this information now at her disposal…and more.
But as she went over a headline regarding the spreading nega-evolution cases, something occurred to her.
“Rotomi?”
“Yes?” Rotomi’s voice came from the Cure Dex.
“Your whole world suffered from this nega-evolution thing, right?”
A pause, then a sad reply. “Yeah. Yeah, it did.”
“…we’ve never bothered to ask you what it was like, have we? A world entirely nega-evolved.”
A longer pause. “It’s really sad. I didn’t wanna bring it up in detail unless someone asked.”
“Well…” Asuka debated opening up a word processor to note down what she was about to hear, but opted instead to just…listen. “…I’m asking now.”
Rotomi exited the Cure Dex, looking down at the floor before floating into Asuka’s hands.
“It’s dark. It’s hard to breathe, the air is so thick with…not something physical, but…just..this unease. This unfixable feeling that nothing is right. That nothing will ever be right. The people and creatures nega-evolved are shells of who they used to be. There’s no warmth or comfort. No satisfaction. It feels like whatever the solution is to whatever ails them…is just out of their reach.”
Asuka listened, her stomach dropping. “That sounds horrible. I’m so sorry…”
“It’s supposedly to feed ‘Dys.’ Whoever that is; I’m not sure. But what kind of person…what kind of thing…feeds off the misery of others? That’s just…that’s terrible. And…” Rotomi’s eyes saddened even further. “To think that…that Amaranth might be going through the same thing right now…”
Asuka brought Rotomi to her chest, as if to hug her. “It’s okay. It’s okay to be scared. It’s okay to not know, and to worry. I’m sure Amaranth is worried about you, too. But we’ll find a way to save your home. And to help the people and pokemon here who were nega-evolved. And you’ve been getting stronger by absorbing the leftover energy, so maybe you still have things you’ve yet to figure out you can do! Even then…you’re safe, and you’re with people who will stay by your side until this is over.”
Rotomi looked up at Asuka, smiling a bit. “…thank you.”
“Of course, Rotomi. Any time you need reassurance, just tell me.”
Asuka looked back at the screen, setting Rotomi carefully on the desk as she got back to skimming the notes; the little fairy flew back into the Cure Dex.
Some time later, the girls were gathered around the coffee table while Dr. Pierce set down some tea and cakes. Asuka was sharing her notes with the group as they enjoyed the snack.
“Dr. Pierce has been keeping notes on not just the nega-evolutions we’ve defeated, but any that her colleagues have encountered,” Asuka began, “Thankfully, some of said colleagues are also working with Precure…”
“I’m currently adding their data to your Cure Dex,” Dr. Pierce explained as she looked over from her computer.
“We were correct in assuming they just use warped versions of moves the pokemon knows,” Asuka continued.
“Like Mr. Mime’s Trick Room, that shuffled the rooms at school!” Naomi piped up.
“Exactly. But now there’s the matter of Shadowlings…”
“They’re not physical pokemon, thankfully,” Kailani said, looking at the notes Asuka had written, “But they can be battled like any normal pokemon. I think we should be able to just leave those to our own pokemon in most situations.”
“Chu-chu!” Raichu threw a little cake in the air in joy, as it landed on his head when he was unable to catch it and seemed to forget he had psychic powers.
“…you’re lucky you’re cute,” Kailani sighed.
“That reminds me,” Fae started, “There’s apparently this place in Sinnoh that, if you don’t take a ‘cute enough’ pokemon…”
As the conversation started to derail, Asuka tried to get the group back on track. Dr. Pierce watched quietly, before hearing a knock at her door.
“Hold on…” Dr. Pierce stood up to answer the door. “I’m coming!”
However, the moment she opened the door, the girls heard her cry out in alarm. “Dr. Pierce!?” Kailani called as they stood up from the table, rushing to the foyer to find her in the process of sitting up, looking up in shock and fear at the new arrival…
“Hello, ladies.” Ataxia waved a hand daintily as she stepped into the room, heels clacking on the hardwood floor. “Or, should I say, Pretty Cure?”
“Ataxia!” Rotomi cried out, “You…you’re here!?”
“I thought today I’d take a bit more of a direct approach.”Ataxia rotated her wrist, the Nega-Ring flashing briefly on it. With a flourish, she prepared to summon a ring of nega-energy.
“Not so fast…!” Kailani and the girls pulled out their compacts, while Ataxia was already in the motion of preparing to cast it toward them—only to turn and direct it at Dr. Pierce.
“Wha—“ “NO!” Rotomi shot out of the Cure Dex and smashed her tiny body into Dr. Pierce, knocking her over as the force knocked the Cure Dex off the table—which landed in the dark circle that had formed where Dr. Pierce once stood.
It shook, rattled, as the darkness spread down the cable connecting the Cure Dex to the computer. The lights flickered, the air grew tense, and numerous error messages appeared on the screen. Before, finally
ERROR: MISSING_NO.();
The darkness shot out the window.
“Wait!” Kailani darted past Ataxia, who quickly vanished while the remaining girls tried to register what just happened. Kailani came to a stop outside, finding the group’s foe.
The beast hulking before her was an amalgamation—vaguely carrying the traits of pokemon she knew, yet all the same crossing way into the uncanny valley.
“NEEEGAAAAAA….” It rumbled, its voice distorted, as if trying to speak through a poor speaker, or a damaged sound card. Ataxia reappeared sitting on top of the roof, legs crossed daintily.
“My,” she remarked, “That’s an unusual nega-evolution, for sure.”
“It’s a…computer error, or something!?” Naomi tried to comprehend as the other girls caught up to Kailani. “It Nega-evolved the Cure Dex itself!”
“Missingno!” Asuka reasoned, “It’s…some kind of error that pops up in pokedexes sometimes when it can’t find what it’s looking for!”
“How can a computer bug be Nega-evolved!? It’s just code!” Naomi argued.
The creature seemed to glitch in response to this, as if angry. Then, it raised its misshapen hands in anger. “NEGA!”
“Alright, enough!” Fae pleaded, “We need to deal with it before things get out of hand!”
“Right…!” Kailani gripped her compact.
“Precure! I! Choose! You!”
“Swarm it!” Sunrise declared, the quartet of girls rushing Nega-Missingno at once. It glitched away just as Sunrise and Starlight lunged, the two crashing into each other.
“What a surprise,” Starlight mumbled, “That didn’t work.”
“Wish whimsy….” Wish started up an attack, when Nega-Missingno glitched in front of her. “Ohh—!”
“NE!” Nega-Missingno swatted her away, giving off a sinister aura of binary code and nega-energy.
“Gotcha—!” Willow caught her.
“Thanks…” Wish muttered dizzily.
“Wake-Up Shock!” Sunrise clapped her hands together, sending the bolt toward Nega-Missingno. It glitched in place, and the electricity had no effect when it struck. “Huh!?”
“That thing’s made from a modded Pokédex; why isn’t electricity scrambling it!?” Starlight summoned Absol. “Type: Dark! Precure Wicked Whirl!”
As the duo’s summoned cyclone of darkness approached Nega-Missingno, it glitched in place again, giving off a bright pink burst of light as the attack struck…once again, no effect.
“Oh, come on!” Starlight complained. “What’s going on!?”
“That pink light was almost like a fairy-type aura….” Wish muttered.
“Like a fairy-type…and dark types can’t affect fairy-types….” Willow murmured. “…hey. I wanna try something. Dr. Pierce!” She turned toward the house.
“Huh!? Y-you need me!?” Dr. Pierce cried out from the window.
“You have a regular Pokédex, don’t you? Scan the nega-evolution!”
“Scan it!? Oh, yes…!” Dr. Pierce came outside, holding a standard Pokédex as she aimed it at Nega-Missingno.
ERROR: MISSING_NO.();
“It’s coming up with the Missingno error!” Dr. Pierce called out, “…but…it’s showing a fairy-typing!”
“Someone attack it!” Willow called out.
“On it!” Sunrise whistled, as Raichu zapped out of the house. “Type: Psychic! Precure PK Spectacle!”
Master and pokemon placed their hands to their temples, as a spiral of psychic energy launched itself toward Nega-Missingno. The nega-evolution gave off a dark aura as the attack struck. No effect.
“Scan it again!” Willow ordered.
“Same error! But….dark-type!?” Dr. Pierce called back.
“That’s it!” Willow pumped a fist. “I know what’s going on! It’s changing type once it realizes what type the incoming attack is! That nega-evolution is literally a walking database of pokemon typings!”
“Then how do we beat it!?” Sunrise asked, letting out a startled yelp as she dove away from an incoming swipe.
“I’ve got an idea! Huddle!”
The four Precure immediately moved into a huddle, much to the confusion of Nega-Missingno.
“Nega?” It comically leaned in, trying to eavesdrop from multiple angles, before jumping back as the girls parted.
“Ready!” Wish and Willow narrowed their eyes, each summoning a pokemon—Charizard appeared proudly behind Wish, as Cyndaquil joined Willow.
“Type: Fire!” they cried out in unison. “Precure Passionate Inferno!”
As the heart-shaped, rose gold-tinted blaze spiraled toward Nega-Missingno, it seemed to shift in place, before the flames struck, with no effect.
“Ground-type!” Dr. Pierce called.
“Now!” Willow shouted. Sunrise and Starlight leapt up from behind with Brionne and Sharpedo.
“Type: Water! Precure Wild Geyser!”
Before Nega-Missingno could react, the pastel-colored, sparkling geyser of water struck it in the back; as it impacted the ground, Fae’s Charizard flew up and unleashed a flamethrower, predicting it would then change its type to grass, burning it in the process.
“Now!” Sunrise shouted as the girls regrouped.
“Precure Quartet Refresh!”
As the refreshing attack purified Nega-Missingno, it seemed to stare at the group, in silence, before slowly fading away…leaving the Cure Dex behind.
“Ohhh…!” Ataxia stomped a foot, crossing her arms, before glancing at Dr. Pierce. “…..” she vanished.
===
“That was some quick sleuthing you did, Asuka!” Kailani beamed; the girls were seeing off Asuka as she was waiting for the ferry to head home.
“It was just standard type-advantage logic…” Asuka replied sheepishly.
“We even have an entry on Nega-Missingno now!” Rotomi piped up from inside the Cure Dex.
“But now we have a bigger problem,” Naomi spoke up.
“Yeah,” Fae began, “It looked like Ataxia was specifically targeting Dr. Pierce….”
“We’ll be sure to check on her every day, then!” Kailani pumped a fist. “And if Mewtwo comes back, he’ll be sure to check on her, I bet.”
“If he comes back,” Naomi emphasized, “He doesn’t seem keen on forming any kind of bond with us, though.”
“He wants to keep himself updated on Dr. Pierce’s research, so I’m sure he’ll return,” Asuka reasoned, “Don’t worry…”
The ferry arrived, and Asuka boarded, waving to the group as the boat set sail. She replayed the day’s battle over in her head—despite it being an amalgamation of code and data, she couldn’t help but feel bad for Nega-Missingno. For the fleeting time it existed, it only knew to fight and defend.
She sighed, then nodded to herself. That was likely how all nega-evolved pokemon felt. And that was terrible. Stepping away from the rail and going to sit down, that realization was all it too to reaffirm her mission—she would do whatever it took to keep any pokemon for feeling that way for long. She had to work faster, undo the nega-evolutions faster.

Kazuna Masunaga SSR
2018 ー CHINA TOWN [チャイナタウン]
“That’s why location scouting. I thought about wanting to go with Sumisora-san. What do you think?“
『Limited Gacha: CHINA TOWN 1st Round (21st - 27th November 2018)』
ーT/N: Part 1 to 4 play before the CHINA TOWN live of the group.ー
Part 1
(Since there’s time until the music program’s recording, let’s have everyone rest in the waiting room…….)
Kazuna: ‘Sumisora-san, do you have a moment?’
Tsubasa: ‘Masunaga-san, what can I help you with?’
Kazuna: ‘There is something I want to consult with you.’
Tsubasa: ‘What might it be.’ _______
Hikaru: ‘Say, say, what is Chinatown famous for?’
Tatsuhiro: ‘It has to be Chinese food, right?’
Mikado: ‘Not only that, Tatsu-dono. Fortune-telling and sweets theme parks also seem to be popular. And the lion dance performance is famous as well.’
Hikaru: ‘Sweets theme parks!? What’s that, it sounds interesting!’
Momotaro: ‘Lion dance performance…… sounds nice.’ _______
(Hikaru-kun and the others seem to be excited talking about Chinatown……)
Kazuna: ‘It looks like everyone is looking forward to the Chinatown event this time.’
Tsubasa: ‘Fufu, that is true. Ah, the matter you wanted to consult with…..’
Kazuna: ‘It is about the Chinatown event. Can I do location scouting in advance?’
Tsubasa: ‘Location scouting?’
Kazuna: ‘Yeah. Each of us will introduce one of Chinatown’s recommended spots on the stage.’
Tsubasa: ‘Yes, for that reason, we take some time around in Chinatown to find what you want to introduce before the event….’
Kazuna: ‘That’s right. But, I’m not confident that I can find something within that time. It’s a bit unfair but if I can’t find something, I’ll be troubled.’
Tsubasa: ‘I see….. ‘
Kazuna: ‘That’s why location scouting. I thought about wanting to go with Sumisora-san. What do you think?’
(Wanting to go on location scouting beforehand, it’s typical of the serious Masunaga-san.)
(BPRO was selected to be the goodwill ambassador of this event. As the representative Masunaga-san is expected to do the speech during the opening ceremony. He may be pressured by it, too.)
Because of her long silence, he gives her a surprised face.
Kazuna: ‘Sumisora-san?’
Tsubasa: ‘I-I am sorry! I will try to check the schedule!’
Kazuna: ‘I guess, Saturdays and Sundays are crowded so weekdays are fine.’
Tsubasa: ‘Ehm, if weekdays then….. Next Wednesday is free.’
Kazuna: ‘Then, next Wednesday.’
Tsubasa: ‘Yes, I noted it down.’
Kazuna: ‘Thanks. I’m looking forward to it.’
Part 2
ーNext Wednesday in Chinatown.ー
Tsubasa: ‘According to the guide book, the main street seems to be around here.’
Kazuna: ‘I see, that’s why this area has a lot of people here. I wonder if the kids over there are on a school trip. Fufu, everyone looks the same as us. Carrying the guide book with excitement.’
Tsubasa: ‘That is true. It looks like it is fun.’
Kazuna: ‘I wonder if I look the same to them. Since it’s my first time coming to Chinatown, I feel the same excitement.’
(Masunaga-san, his tension is higher than usual. He was looking forward to it.)
Kazuna: ‘There’s a good smell somehow….. What is it?’
Tsubasa: ‘Ah! It seems like they are selling meat buns!’
Kazuna: ‘I see, that’s the smell.’
Tsubasa: ‘The shop’s sweet chestnuts here…… Over there they are selling Xiaolongbao*.’
Kazuna: ‘Everything really looks delicious. Now that you say it, there’s a map for trying out the food, right?’
Tsubasa: ‘Yes, according to that map, in addition, Peking duck, shark fin soup, egg tarts and shaved ice are popular as well.’
Kazuna: ‘There are a lot of recommendations. If it was Hikaru, he would immediately say let’s go and start running off.’
Tsubasa: ‘Fufu, I can imagine.’
Kazuna: ‘T-That strap……’
Tsubasa: ‘Which one?’
Kazuna: ‘The red pepper strap** over there. I saw it being sold at other stores but what does it mean?’
Tsubasa: ‘Perhaps it is for warding off evil?’
Kazuna: ‘That may be so. Shall we go ask the store clerk?’
Tourist A: ‘Hey, the one there, could that be……’
Tourist B: ‘Ah, true. He does resemble Masunaga-san. What now? Should we call out to him?’
Tourist A: ‘Eeh~, but, what if we’re wrong, that’s going to be embarrassing…….’
(Those two, they may have recognized Masunaga-san. What to do, like this it will cause an uproar…..)
Kazuna: ‘Sumisora-san……’
Tsubasa: ‘Ah…….’
(Masunaga-san took my hand……)
Kazuna: ‘I don’t think they didn’t fully realize yet. Let’s enter a store somewhere. I wonder if the tea house there is good. Let’s go.’
Tsubasa: ‘Y-Yes……’
Part 3
Kazuna: ‘This tea house here has a café. It was noticeable properly when we entered the tea house.’
Tsubasa: ‘I agree……’
(I’m glad, even when looking out from the window, it seems that we don’t need to worry about them following us. I wonder if they thought that it was a wrong guess.)
Kazuna: ‘........I’m sorry for causing you trouble.’
Tsubasa: ‘Eh?’
Kazuna: ‘If I introduce my recommendation at the event I can’t properly decide on it, so I’ll do it beforehand I thought. But it backfired.’
Tsubasa: ‘That is not true! The prior location scouting is for the sake of the event’s success. Moreover, it was thanks to Masunaga-san’s calm reaction that we were saved when the fans were about to find out a while ago. Instead, I like to express my gratitude for it.’
At her honest words, his eyes widen in surprise.
Kazuna: ‘Sumisora-san……’
Tsubasa: ‘Even though at such a moment, it has to be me who reacts calmly. I am sorry…..’
Kazuna: ‘No, that’s not true. I’m grateful just for your company.’
Tsubasa: ‘But…..’
Kazuna: ‘Then, why don’t we say that we’re on equal ground in this regard?’
Tsubasa: ‘Fufu, you are right.’
Tsubasa: ‘Wow, there is such a variety.’
Clerk: ‘This tea is good for beauty.’
Tsubasa: ‘For beauty?’
Clerk: ‘Yes. It is a tea with a sweet and tender scent. The improvement of the metabolism and the detox effect are popular among women. The tea next to this one is for flu prevention. It is effective for eye strain.’
Tsubasa: ‘Amazing. There are various effects depending on the type of tea.’
Kazuna: ‘There is also tea here to prevent tooth decay.’
Tsubasa: ‘It is fun even though we are just looking.’
Kazuna: ‘Yeah. This flu prevention tea sounds good. How about we buy one and go back.’
Kazuna: ‘Ah, right. Let’s buy one for the others as a souvenir. Say, which one do you think is good, Sumisora-san?’
Tsubasa: ‘Let me see….. How about the energizing tea here?’
Kazuna: ‘Yeah, let’s take this one. I will go buy it.’
Tsubasa: ‘Yes.’
(A tea souvenir for the others….. I understand why everyone adores him.)
Part 4
Kazuna: ‘Since there’s a café here, let’s take a break here.’
Tsubasa: ‘You are right.’
Kazuna: ‘Sumisora-san, what will you drink?’
Tsubasa: ‘Then I will order the Jasmine tea. And Masunaga-san?’
Kazuna: ‘I guess I’ll try out this flu preventing Pu’er tea***.’
Kazuna: ‘Excuse me, we’d like to order.’
Clerk: ‘Sorry to keep you waiting. I will take your order.’
Kazuna: ‘One iced Jasmine tea and one hot Pu’er tea, please.’
Clerk: ‘Thank you for ordering.’
Tsubasa: ‘By the way, it is only a bit until the Chinatown event, isn’t it. Because today is a weekday there are not many guests yet. But it is a holiday on the event day, so it probably will be full of guests who come to see the event.’
Kazuna: ‘Yeah. All the members are looking forward to the event and are busy preparing.’
Tsubasa: ‘That is true.’
Kazuna: ‘Mikado and Momo will be doing a performance at the event. They are most likely busy practicing the lion dance. They often wonder if they’ll make it in time since there are a lot of things to remember, but both wear fulfilling faces.’
Kazuna: ‘While walking and eating, Hikaru was quite excited. When he saw that Tatsuhiro got worried.’
(He does watch everyone very closely, huh.)
Tsubasa: ‘What about Masunaga-san?’
Kazuna: ‘Me? Of course, I’m looking forward to it. Though I’m nervous regarding the speech at the opening ceremony.’
Tsubasa: ‘I see….. That is good to hear.’
Kazuna: ‘Good to hear?’
Tsubasa: ‘Masunga-san always prioritizes the other members. Because it is the Chinatown event, I really want you to enjoy the event.’
Kazuna: ‘Sumisora-san……’
Tsubasa: ‘I think it is natural to be nervous about the speech but outside of it, please let the tension out of your shoulders and enjoy yourself.’
Kazuna: ‘So you were thinking about me in such a way, huh. Thanks.’
Kazuna: ‘But, that’s Sumisora-san as well, right?’
Tsubasa: ‘Eh?’
Kazuna: ‘I also want Sumisora-san to have fun.’
Part 5
ーThe day of the Chinatown event.ー
(The opening ceremony will start anytime now……)
Tsubasa: ‘It is your turn soon, Masunaga-san. Are you ready?’
Kazuna: ‘Yeah, I am.’
Mikado: ‘Wonderful. I am able to witness leader’s gallant figure with my own eyes!’
Hikaru: ‘I’m super excited! Leader, give it your all!’
Tatsuhiro: ‘We’re counting on you.’
Momotaro: ‘Leader, you’ll be fine.’
Kazuna: ‘...... Yeah, thanks.’
Tsubasa: ‘When the opening ceremony is over, we will move places. So please prepare for it, everyone.’
Hikaru: ‘Okay!’
Kazuna: ‘This costume is a bit difficult to move with. I hope I don’t fall when I get on the stage.’
(Masunaga-san, he’s considerably nervous. He’s been constantly checking his ceremony memo since a while ago……)
Mikado: ‘Leader, it’s going to be alright.’
Kazuna: ‘Eh?’
Hikaru: ‘Bingo! You went on location scouting for this day, after all, that’s why it will be fine!’
Tatsuhiro: ‘I understand that you’re nervous but relax now.’
Kazuna: ‘Everyone……’
Momotaro: ‘Right, here…..’
Kazuna: ‘A water bottle?’
Momotaro: ‘The Jasmine tea leader brought us as a souvenir has a relaxing effect.’
Kazuna: ‘Momo….. Thanks.’
Kazuna: ‘...... Yeah, it’s delicious. The fragrance of the Jasmine flower comes through the nose and is refreshing. Everyone, thank you.’
Tsubasa: ‘Masunaga-san, it is about time……’
Kazuna: ‘Ah, you’re right.’
Kazuna: ‘Okay then, I’ll go and have fun. See you later.’

*Xialongbao: ‘Xiaolongbao are small steamed buns, originally from the Jiangnian region in China, especially connected to Shanghai and Wuxi. Traditionally they are filled with pork, but this can be mixed with other things, like crab meat and roe (eggs). Modern of these often contain other meats, seafood or vegetarian fillings.’ [Source: Wikipedia]
**Red Pepper straps: They are souvenirs that are sold in shops for little money in Chinatown. In China, chilli peppers are like amulets to ward off evil.
***Pu’er: ‘Pu’er or pu-erh is a variety of fermented tea produced in the Yunnan province in China. Fermentation in the context of tea production involves microbial fermentation and oxidation of the tea leaves after they have been dried and rolled. [....] This type of tea is different from what is known as black tea in English, which in Chinese is called 红茶 hóngchá (literally, 'red tea').’ [Source: Wikipedia]

MAÑANA: Latinx Comics From the 25th Century is now open for submissions.
[Noten: Toda esta información también está disponible en español a pedido.]
"In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed to the islands of the Caribbean. That single event led to the radical transformation of the region, the hemisphere, and eventually the entire world.
Indigenous peoples were decimated. Lands were colonized. African peoples were displaced and enslaved. Race, as a concept, took root. Black women and indigenous women were subjugated. Cultures died, fused, changed, and were, sometimes, reborn. Art, music, foods, and faiths echoed these tangled pasts. Immigrants from across the planet flocked to the newly christened "Latin America." A caste system based on race and color reigned. Liberation struggles were fought. Revolutions were won. Wars of independence were waged. Coups were orchestrated. Global capitalism ran amok, fueling the mass exodus... And we survived it all.
That all seems so far away now."

What We WANT:
Comics (not illustrations, not prose, not poetry).
Previously unpublished stories.
The protagonist (or POV character) must be Latinx or Latin American.
Writers who have a connection to the country they choose as their setting (either from there, born there, parents or grandparents born there, lived there for many years, etc.)
Speculative fiction: How has technology changed? How has society changed? How have politics changed? The natural world? Fashion? The thoughtfulness of your world building will make or break your pitch.
Informed fiction: We want stories whose ideas about the future are rooted in an understanding of the past and present. For example: we're less interested in whether flying cars exist and more interested in whether the Amazon rain forest makes a full recovery (and what that means for Brazil).
Optimism: your vision of 25th century Latin America doesn't need to be utopic (although it can be) as long as themes of improvement, empowerment, growth, or problem-solving predominate.
Peaceful stories, sad stories, triumphant stories, funny stories, failure stories, action stories, philosophical stories, love stories -- the full spectrum of humanity is welcome. The catch: it must end “positively.” Everything doesn’t have to work out, but we prefer stories end on a note of hope, new understandings, resilience, etc.
What We DON’T Want:
No fan works. No auto-bio. No prose. No one-off illustrations.
Comics that are already finished or that you’ve already started drawing.
Hacking the Mainframe: Unless you really, really think you can "WOW!" us with a highly original take, avoid "hackers take down the mega corporation" as a plot (because it's been done to death).
Fantasy: We want science fiction and/or speculative fiction based in the real physical laws of our universe. However, certain elements of magic realism can work for us (e.g. in an otherwise realistic setting, a character speaks to a long departed ancestor, experiences old gods in a vision, or watches their life unfold out of sequence).
Ahistorical Takes: any stories that erase, deny, or revise the real-world histories of Latin American peoples will be rejected.
Horror: Your story can use fear and danger as plot elements, but if instilling fear/existential dread in the reader is the overarching goal, this is the wrong anthology.
Cursing is permitted as long as words aren’t used literally (i.e. “Shit, you scared me!” as opposed to “Let’s go shit in the woods!”) and are used very sparingly when used at all. In general, we’d prefer not.
No porn. No references to specific sexual acts. No explicit nudity whether sexual or non-sexual (sorry, folks). “Consensual fade-to-black sex between legal adults” is fine.
No depictions of abuse (sexual, physical, psychological) whether pictorial or written. Characters may vaguely reference (in non-graphic language) abuse that they have suffered in the past if doing so serves the story or is integral to the character.
No gore. People can get hurt, bleed, die, etc, but not in a grossly over-the-top way that fetishizes violence.
No slurs, no racist statements nor imagery, no misogyny, no transphobia, no ableism, no xenophobia, and no white supremacist nonsense in general. Since this anthology is about Latin America's future, these topics can be broached in your story, but we urge you to tackle such subjects in a more creative way than "[insert drawing of some guy yelling a slur]."
Ready to pitch?
"SOLO CREATORS" APPLY HERE.
"WRITERS ONLY" APPLY HERE.
"ARTISTS ONLY" APPLY HERE.
Here’s what you’ll need to complete each form:
SOLO CREATORS:
A working title and page count for your comic (doesn’t have to be exact).
A synopsis of your story, including a beginning, middle, and end. Spoil everything, but try to keep it under 300 words.
Preliminary sketches associated with your pitch: character ideas, environment concepts (the latter is especially important if your portfolio lacks strong examples of background art), etc. These don’t need to be final or polished pieces! Just clear enough to give us an idea.
Links to any relevant publishing credits. Self-published works and webcomics count as credits! Choose examples that best reflect the style you intend to use for this comic. You may simply include a link to your portfolio if you have no pre-existing credits, but please note that folks with sequential storytelling examples will receive preference.

I rarely do written posts in Tumblr anymore because I am still figuring out how this new UI works in general (and there might be still be some bugs about writing posts + leaving them on drafts + publishing them accidentally as well), and tbh, between the past two months have been sorta chaotic and very mentally draining (besides some work I have been doing) and me attempting to think around some of my few active fandoms... well, haven’t had an eureka moment where I sit and write what I think about stuff.
So, let’s talk about some “stuff”.
Some days ago, I accidentally noticed by PURE CHANCE that some of the completed webtoons I was going to “eventually read” in LINE were going to get “locked”/converted for Daily Pass. I mean, tbf, I knew that they were going to stick to this plan since past October, but it seems they really went full force this month (they only “locked” like a couple of series back then). And it’s exactly how I thought they would do so - popular series that have been already completed, old and recent.
I’m not going to complain about “Daily Pass” because I do have some thoughts about that and the fact they could use another model than just readers farming/buying coins, but, what do you do, especially since lots of these series are PRETTY long (140+ chapters long)?
My complaint does come from that, as a web user, I found this by pure chance, despite them saying they would announce what series would be locked in a 30-day advance notice. Because there’s no apparent indicator in the main page about THIS (The only Notice/News detail you see down below the page is about Canvas creators). Heck, I don’t think they even tell you about it in their mail newsletter, which kinda suck :))).
So, anyway.
I checked and, yes, a couple of VERY old series I was interested in reading were/are going to get locked. Problem, like I mentioned? THEY are pretty long! I know I can binge read as much as I want, but I cannot make miracles like reading over 100 chapters (if one series, try thinking about 2 or 3 - I WAS NOT GOING TO DO THIS) in less than 12 hours! ESPECIALLY if those series were going to get locked THIS WEEK.
FML.
...anyway crisis was averted when I had to let go some interesting series that I may would get my way to read them (if there is a new buying/rental model they would apply) in the future... BUT I did read stuff I was curious or wanted to read... and mainly old stuff that I was willing to eventually finish one day.
Opinions on those series?
Okay, as brief and spoiler free as possible:
Untouchable: A story about modern-day vampires that instead of drinking blood, they have evolved to absorb the energy of their preys. This one is a romantic series about Sia, a vampire model and this human guy who has a very deep microphobia, and she puts her eyes on him when she realizes that his energy is like none she has tasted before. But, again, dude has microphobia (that is more or less controlled as time goes on).
I stopped reading this one for a while because I was sorta smelling love triangle from a jealous friend of hers that OBVIOUSLY didn’t want to be looked as “just a friend”, lol. Like “how would this get solved”, kind of thing in your typical romance stuff. But then, last week I retook it... and it wasn’t as bad... but it leaks typical shoujo stuff/problems that become a newer obstacle as time goes on and on (misscomunication, lack of trust, overprotective family ANNOYINGLY hurting their own offspring, sudden deux ex machina...?). So, I think it finished fine... But man, I was so pissed off in how some stuff was managed at the end, lmao. Especially the way a “villain” was redeemed? I know that they say “karma is a b*tch”, but, DUDE KILLED PEOPLE BEFORE!? and you redeem him in a “lol, you will find out how love will make you feel” LIKe, DUDE, WHAT THE HELL. DON’T REDEEM HIM LIKE THAT.
Ghost Wife: I started reading this series in an unofficial manner a long while ago, but I supposed that the first chapters are pretty slow and it didn’t catch me on in the first place. It’s about a girl that starts seeing ghosts/spirits, and there’s this one that becomes WAY too attached to her, that offers her two options: either been eaten/killed or agreeing to be his wife. Given the title of thise series, you might wonder she accepted the second one
My lesson? Should have kept reading. The story picks up when other ghostly creatures are introduced and they start interacting with the main female character and her “ghost husband”, especially since this ghost cannot really imitate human interaction and his solution is “hypnotizing” everyone so he can “normally” fit. And the interaction between those two becomes more gracious and natural. You can feel that she likes being with him, despite the dangers of attracting ghosts that might kill her and all that. Heh.
Other lesson I had is that: the artist isn’t EXACTLY well into action scenes and some other details (but their ghostly creatures’ designs are TERRIFYING), so, I thought “well, I know there are other artists like this in the webcomic/webtoon environment, I shouldnt be too worried about my art once I get done with mine, right?
Also, some details started to make sense later on. And I cried like a baby in some moments, as well. Don’t have too many complaints, though. Perhaps more obvious “falling in love” moments... but then I realized that some actions speak lots better than words.
About Death: And speaking of “crying like a baby”, this one. This is a very old work, and it’s a gem, and it’s short, to top! And HECK, the art was AMAZING. Very touchy, and it makes you think. There’s quite a lot of South Korean webtoons that have made me cry because... they really make you think a LOT about stuff... especially about life and death.
Oh! Holy: Story about a shy and lonely loveable dork that is in love of his childhood friend, and that they eventually find each other in high school. Said childhood friend is idolized in school (but she is... hmmm... a dork as, well). Oh, he sees ghosts. OH, and she dies within the first three chapters accidentally :3. Shenanigans happen.
I HAD A LOT OF FUN WITH THIS ONE. SURE, it’s another shoujo but WAY less dramatic than Untouchable, because this was comedy (so, a rom-com!). And this one made me want more and more to read it. The characters all had an amazing personality, chemistry and their interactions were FUN AS HELL. The author seems to have my my sense of (dumb) humor, and the art was too attractive and knew where it should bright.
I don’t think I have too many complaints about this one. I may have felt unsatisfied in some minor stuff, but everything else felt “okay” to me, in general.
A couple of things, though: localization and some quality stuff relating to translation in this series. I cannot judge the translation, but I do think it could have handled more quality checking on this one or proofreading, I’m not sure. I know that these (licensed and translated) series come in a weekly basis, but they REALLY need to pay more $$$ to their own staff to not let this stuff happen THAT frequent.
Localization is a bit of an issue I do HAVE though, and it is the same as in “Ghost Wife” and some other recent Korean series they have licensed in the recent past: Why using English-localized names, though? SURE, they retain their original last Korean names... but... why don’t keep their FULL NAMES, I wonder? I mean, weren’t we supposed to be over that kind of stuff already (videogames, JPN anime, manga other foregin stuff)? Is it because marketability? And/or because some names are “puns” that couldn’t easily be translateable in other languages?
If it’s the latter, I think the same is applied in other regional language localization, like, in Spanish, original English language “Axed” is called “Natacha la del Hacha” and you cannot wonder how it crawls over my skin. I know this series is BUILT ON and is full of puns (as I am following it)... but... “Axelia” is a much more cooler name than “Natacha”... :I or so I THINK? Don’t take me too seriously...
In “Ghost Wife” I get it, you have spiritual creatures... their “human” names are puns of what they really are, and these words MAYBE don’t have too much meaning in English or Spanish or whatever... but... its a bit... glaring... when the main cast has English first names... and then you have a side character called... I dunno, “Soyeon” :I. or Haetae (a creature that didn’t have a human character name...) or, heck, characters that never appear again like... there was this “Damien” dude that for some reason, his name is slipped a couple of times as “Suho” (I wonder, his original name). But, then, you have people named “Liz”, “Drake”, “Sarah”, “Nathan” ????
I suppose that in “Oh! Holy” that might be the case, too. The original Korean name of the series is “오!주예수여” that is translated as “Oh! Lord Jesus”, because Holy in Korean is named “Yesu”. And, *sigh* I think that says enough. The pun STILL works... but :’))
But at the same time, I think my thing with the English localized names in “Oh! Holy” is that they are... blatantly boring and I don’t think they fit their faces. At all. But, maybe that’s me? (I mean, the “ultimate” reaper is called Norman. NORMAN.) Like I said, they still keep their original Korean last names... but... ugh.
(this is coming from someone who gave two of her characters very not obvious Spanish names given that they are Mexican, but I do have some valid cultural and VERY obvious explanations about those...)
Also - I don’t get LINE Webtoon’s selectiveness in this localization decision. Some of the South Korean series they bring, they do KEEP their original full names (see “A Good Day to be a Dog”, “Ghost Teller”, heck, the afforementioned “Untouchable”), but then you have stuff like “Oh! Holy”, “Ghost Wife”, “Scorching Romance”, “Mom, I’m Sorry!” or “Lookism”... ?????
And, this is very blatant annoying because a) K-Pop is HUGELY global mainstream nowadays and you can hear/read fans screaming their NAMES?! And 2) K-dramas are also pretty popular these days???
??????
*LONG SIGH*
There’s a few series that I want to check out, but I still have some more days for that to happen (heck, even a bit of more than a week). But, it SURE DOES suck that most of the interesting series I had my eyes on all were going to get locked this WEEK. :))))

Tom vs. The Underworld
Chapter 1 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 | Chapter 8 | Chapter 9 | Chapter 10
Chapter 2: Santeria, Part 1
I had been moping at home in our kingdom for two days before I decided to leave. No matter how many video games, or ping-pong matches, or the numerous times I hurled pear grenades at Petey as we played dodgeball, I just couldn’t stop thinking about how I left Star on the day we should’ve left for our trip together. My parents were away discussing business matters with the Pigeon Kingdom so that ruled out me talking to anyone about my problems. Brian’s expertise was anger management, and I wasn’t particularly angry over anything that counting backwards from ten would resolve. And Petey is loyal and all, but he doesn’t quite get it. So I decided to just go wherever the road led me and my skeleton horse-drawn carriage.
I picked up my “Alphonse the Worthy’s Atlas of the Multiverse” and started turning its pages. The titular sea captain had documented many dimensions throughout the universe that I thought would be a great starting point for Star and I to choose where to visit on our first getaway. All she had to do was pick one--any one. But she didn’t circle anything. And there were SO many dimensions we could have seen together. There’s the Underwater Dimension, Pixtopia, and even the Plains of Time where Father Time literally maintains time! There’s the Desert Dimension, home of the universe’s best hot dog, the Goblin Dog—I’ve always wanted to try one. There is even the Crystal Dimension where all the renowned, most evilest of beings are imprisoned; sounds pretty metal if you ask me!
I let out a sigh and closed the book. I sat it down on the table next to the throne chair I had been slumped in and rubbed my fingers to my temple irritated. Was none of those worlds just not interesting to her, or was she hiding the fact that she already had been there before… with Marco?
I pulled myself up and decided to brood over by the window of my carriage for a change. My skeleton horse trotted along a mountainous volcanic region of the Underworld, towing my caravan behind it. I had been travelling for two days now and I didn’t really know where I was headed, I just knew I wanted to get away and go anywhere at this point. I wanted to clear my mind and give Star space. I wanted to see something new. Star and I both would be seeing something new right now if it all worked out. But now I’m travelling through my homeland, the same old Underworld where I have lived all my life.
Granted, this was a region I had barely been in. My family would travel by portals to get to Lava Lake so we wouldn’t have to waste time travelling the hard way. This area was a divider between the lake and Prickly Plains, where the demon city of my common people resided. I don’t know why I decided to take the long trek through, it just felt like something I had to do. Plus, the change of scenery was not too bad. There were mountains of all sizes and volcanoes oozing out its molten rock like blood from a wound. The path I was on was decorated with charred skulls and skeletons, probably of tourists who foolishly came to the Underworld without a firesuit or any other form of protection from the burst of flames that would emit from the earth spontaneously. But no matter how cool the sight was, I couldn’t stop thinking about Star.
I wanted Star to be with me right now. I wanted her to finally start having fun and enjoy being a teenager for once. She no longer had any obligations to the Butterfly throne. She was done with being a princess and wanted to be free. But I can’t help to think that maybe she wanted to be free from everything that pertained to that aspiration. And since I am a prince, that included me being apart of what held her back as well.
“Ugh! What does she want me to do? It may be easy for her to just give it all up, but not for me.” I groaned as I rested my chin in the palm of my hand and leaned on the windowsill with my elbow. The Lucitor throne is what I’ve always known to be mine one day. I was proud of it--being a prince. It is my path and something I accept for myself. But I should accept what she wants for herself too. I finally got a second chance for Star and I to be together and I don’t want it to end over me being upset or letting my emotions get in the way again.
Without warning, my skeleton horse halted its pace abruptly and I shifted about on my feet. “Why have we stopped?” I said aloud.
I opened the door of my carriage and stepped out to see where I had ended up. I first noticed a humongous mountain a mile or so before me with bats and vultures dotting the sky around it. It was the tallest point in the Underworld--The Mountain of Boom. And seated within the mountain’s col was what looked to be a small town. There were a few buildings and residences built in to the mountain range as other structures came to the center of its valley. A crowd of demons bustling around a busy marketplace was the forefront of the town that lay ahead. It actually was a wicked sight to behold. The perfect place to get distracted.
I looked up to read the large entrance sign in the shape of a traditional Japanese shrine gateway that I was standing under. “Yomi Town”. Never heard of it. There were a lot of civilians around for it being in a remote location so it must have some interesting secrets behind it.
“Guess I’ll have a look around, not much else to do.” I said while placing my hands in my pockets and walking through the torii. “Get comfortable, skeleton horse.”
“Yes, Master Tom.” My horse uttered from behind me.
I strolled through the town’s marketplace engrossed in fascination. Not only was it loud, but it was crazy busy. Demons and monsters littered the streets haggling over shop items or enjoying the many varieties of food selections to be had. There were handcrafted weapons laid out on embroidered mats and decorative wares such as plates, bowls, clothes, and jewelry all being presented by its sellers to their intrigued buyers. I saw street performers dancing with basilisk boas while others blew fire from their mighty jaws to create authentic glass art. Customers were entering and exiting restaurants, ordering at side carts, or walking around eating their delicacies in order to not miss anything the market had to offer. There was even cute little cerberus puppies on display in the window of a pet store. I just had to check those out!
The little monstrous pups with three heads were tumbling and pawing at each other without a care in the world. I pressed my hands up against the window to admire their adorableness further. There were five of them altogether and they were practically identical. Their jet black fur was smooth and their red eyes shone brightly as they tussled with their siblings. One of the multi-headed canines finally noticed me and came up to the window. It looked up at me with its six big eyes and gave me a tiny fanged smile, wagging its tail playfully. It was so cute!
However, despite all of the excitement, my hand idly returned to its previous location in my pocket and held on to my compact phone. I began to wonder what Star was up to right now. Not being able to text her nonstop was one of the hardest things about this time away. She hadn’t called me since I left, come to think of it. Did she even care where I went? I wonder where she ended up going to… Probably Earth, I bet… Who am I kidding, I know she did…
I closed my eyes and pulled my other hand away from the glass and back into the adjacent pocket of my leather jacket. I sighed as I felt the depression returning. Even though I’m far away from her, I still can’t forget about Star...
“P-Prince Tom?” I heard a feathery voice float through the noise of the multitude of monsters and rest upon my ears. Her voice was familiar and inviting, I knew I heard it some time before. And although it was soft, it was as if everything around us seemed to hush for the female demon that stood a few feet from me.
She was a teenager like me, an assumption I gathered from her appearance. She had gray skin with patches of what resembled small rocklike fragments dotting portions of the parts of her body that was shown. Her golden eyes mirrored the sunlight and her somewhat disheveled scarlet hair spread out like a bird’s wing. But only the right side of her tresses were visible as the left side was concealed by the hood of her black sleeveless sweatshirt she had on under her shoulderless jean jacket. Her dark blue denim shorts were high-waisted and her white knee-high combat-style boots were scuffed from extensive use perhaps.
I remembered her. She was the delivery girl for that store on Lava Lake that would bring our order every few weeks. I answered the door for her once. She was clumsy and a bit high-strung, but she seemed friendly. Her name was…
… nice to meet you, Raya. Well, see-ya around …
That’s right. It came back to me.
“Hey there, Raya.” I greeted her by taking my hands out of my pockets and waved at her, my phone being forgotten at the moment.
She looked surprised and said, “You remembered… someone like me?” She began to blush and smiled to herself. “Thank you, Prince Tom…”
“Hey, I told you last time. No need for the formalities. Just Tom is fine.” I told her.
“Oh, no I couldn’t.” Raya tightened her grip on the bag she was holding. “My parents would be very upset if they knew I spoke to you in such a casual way... I’m sorry, Prince Tom.” She sounded very sorrowful over the thought of the idea.
“Well it’s fine, I guess…” Feeling defeated, I rubbed the back of my head not knowing what to say next. I fixated on the bag in her hands and became interested by its contents being a rather large flat square. “Hey, what’s that?” I asked.
“Oh, just a vinyl record.” Raya reached in and pulled it out. I recognized the band on the front and got a little excited.
“Are you for real?! Love Sentence! I love them! I’m like their number one fan.” I didn’t notice I had grabbed on to it during my fit of fangirling. I continued to gush over them, “What the!! This album is hard to find and contains all of their songs from when they first started out, like before they even were famous! There’s even a lot of never before released stuff on here! So you’re a huge fan too?!”
She said without hesitation. “No, never heard of them.”
If this were a cartoon, this is the part where I would face fault.
“What?! Then why did you buy such a widely-sought-after-by-fans album such as that?” I exclaimed dumbfounded.
“Oh is it that rare?” Raya looked it over perplexed.
“Yes, of course, have you not been listening to what I’ve been saying!” I was astonished by her naivety over such a remarkable boy band such as Love Sentence.
“... So that’s why it was the last one.” She said nonchalantly.
“WHAT?!” I felt fire explode from me as I yelled in disbelief. Keep it together now, keep it together.
I quickly calmed myself down and pleaded with Raya, “You have to let me buy that from you.”
Raya put the record back in the back and looked at me worriedly. “Oh… I’m sorry, Prince Tom, I can’t do that…”
“Why not? I’ll pay double what you paid, anything actually! Please!” I had grabbed on to her shoulders and begged for the album.
“I can’t because it’s a gift…” Raya said meekly, the gray on her cheeks were turning pink.
“Oh.” I squeaked out. Well that was a definite open mouth insert foot moment. I dropped down from 10 to 0 on the freak-out scale and could now think with a clear head again. I quickly released my grasp on her shoulders and it was my turn to blush due to the awkwardness that I had caused. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have touched you like that. And I shouldn’t have tried to pay for something that is a gift of yours…”
Raya smiled at me and said happily, “Actually, Prince Tom, it’s kind of nice seeing how passionate you are about music. I’m the same way really.”
“Yea… Still that was a jerk move on my part. I still have a lot to learn about boundaries obviously… So I’m sorry.” I apologized as I was still kicking myself for how I acted.
“Thank you.” She gave me another sincere smile and accepted my apology.
I didn’t want to pry but I still wanted to know why she bought that record. So I asked, “So… you buying that for a brother, or a sister, or a boyfriend maybe?”
Raya shook her head and said, “Every year my family comes here on vacation and there is always some one-of-a-kind finds out here. I try to buy one souvenir for each of my friends back home since they don’t get the opportunity to leave our hometown very often…My friend Blair loves this band so I had to get it.”
“Wow… that’s pretty cool of you.” I praised her kindness. There is also more to this place than I thought and since her and her family come here enough to know about it, I had a great idea come to mind. “Hey, how about I help you shop for your friends as a way to make up for how I acted?”
Raya grew nervous again and said, “Oh no, I don’t want to take up your own time here that you could be spending with your family or… your girlfriend?”
Upon hearing her rebuttal, my heart skipped a beat. I started thinking about Star again. If only you knew, Raya. You won’t be taking up any time that I would have been spending with her because she didn’t even want to come with me anywhere…
I shook the thought away and tried keeping my composure as I told her, “Nah, it’s cool. I’m travelling alone actually. This is my first time here...” I began itching the back of my head, unsure of how she would handle such a proposal, but I continued anyway. “I was thinking… Since your family comes here more than I ever have, do you think you could also show me around?”
Raya put her hand to her chin and was actually considering what I had asked of her. “Well, if Your Highness… I mean, If you insist, Prince Tom. It would be rude if I turned down your request.” She began fiddling with her fingers.
“Awesome, let’s go then!” I was ecstatic. This was a great chance to get distracted. I started strutting forward but then froze in my steps. I looked back at her and said, “Uh… Where to first?”
She giggled and we walked down the main street together.
There was so much to see and so many novelty stores that I never would have expected from a town so deep in the mountains. This section of Yomi Town containing the marketplace and shopping center was known as the Tsukiyomi District. It was the social hub for practically everything. Raya showed me the music store where she had bought the vinyl record. What made it stand out from many others was the signed instruments it had from popular bands and infamous singers--I even saw one of Eclipsa’s skeleton guitars on display. While there earlier, Raya was debating on whether she should buy “The Box of Applause” for one of her friends and after a second opinion by me, she did (seemed different, but cool). Raya scored some gourmet coffee beans from an espresso stand as a gift and I pointed out a seller closeby with all sorts of exotic crystals she bought as another one. We finally picked out chocolate scorpions from a dessert store for the last friend on her mental list--it being a banned delicacy back in Prickly Plains--and we tried a few for ourselves.
In between our search for souvenirs we were also able to do some of the recreational activities Yomi Town had to offer--we went ziplining through the fiery caverns, played a few games of flamethrower tag at an arcade, and we caught a local band performing at Yomi Town’s cemetery event center while passing by. I even tried extreme hot air balloon racing with the speed being controlled by miniature dragon flames; now how sweet is that! I let Raya beat me though, I swear. I was actually quite impressed with how this day was turning out.
Raya knew a lot about Yomi Town too. She told me about the Mountain of Boom being the largest volcano in the Underworld and that when it erupts its vibration is felt throughout all of Mewni. It’s lava empties into crevasses around the mountain, kind of like a fondue fountain. There’s a hot spring at its base where her family is staying that has water with temperatures reaching up to 1,000 degrees due to the lava flowing underneath.
It was towards the end of our adventurous day where I slipped up. We had made it to a clothing store where we were trying on outrageous fashion styles and having so much fun laughing over the choices we showcased in front of a set of full-length mirrors.
Raya and I both were making vogue faces while wearing matching spider hats and spiderweb shades when I mindlessly said, “Haha! Oh wait, let me take a selfie so I can send it to--”
I stopped myself before I could finish but I was already holding my compact phone up as a reflex to snap a photo. Send it to Star? What was I thinking. Why would I say that? Would Star even care anyway?
Raya didn’t notice I had cut my sentence short and she agreed with a simple “Sure.”
I went ahead and took the picture for the sake of not alerting the demon girl of my sudden switch in emotion; but I didn’t send it. I was somewhat happy, from what my forced expression on the photo suggested, but deep down I was still bothered by my situation with Star. After all this, still?!
I removed the hat and shades and sat them back on the display rack. I’m sure it was written all over my face how I was feeling right now. I didn’t want to bother Raya with my problems so it would probably be best if I stepped aside for a moment.
“Hey, I’m going to get some fresh air, ‘kay?” I mumbled. Without waiting for a response from her, I walked out of the store and wandered over to a courtyard that was in proximity to the marketplace but away from all of the hustle and bustle. I stood under a large black tree with bare branches and frowned wistfully at it.
I can’t believe myself sometimes. After everything I’ve done today I still can’t get Star out of my head. She was probably having her own fun right now, with Marco. Not giving me a second thought… Seriously, what is wrong with me, why am I not good enough...
“Is everything alright, Prince Tom.” I heard Raya’s amiable voice as she carefully stepped up from behind me. So she did follow me outside...
I didn’t want to lie to her and I didn’t want to hide the reason for me ending up in this town. But these were my own problems and after she dedicated her time to me (to keep me distracted) she didn’t deserve my drama or baggage. She could’ve been doing anything she wanted, but she hung out with me. She wasted her time for me to show me around a place that she has been coming to for years. Yet I was the one being a downer? It seemed she had fun today, but did she really?
“Prince Tom?” She repeated with some worry in her tone after I forgot to answer her the first time.
“Sorry, I just… started thinking about my girlfriend…” I confessed with my back still turned on her.
“Oh! Is she okay?” Raya inquired concerned.
“Yea… I think she is. I’m just… We’re having a…” I was struggling with what to say. This was my business and I needed to handle it on my own. “Hey, t-thanks for today.” I choked out trying to deflect from my growing depression. Why did I feel I were on the verge of tears.
“Prince Tom?”
I heard her lightly step forward as my eyes welled up further. I croaked out, “You know, I don’t have a lot of friends… And it seems the ones I do have, the ones who are supposed to be my best friends, would rather spend time together than with me. And you have been SO kind to me today for me to just start acting like this. All I wanted was to relax and have a great time while I’m away. I just wish it were always like this when I’m with her... I’m sorry you had to put up with me and do things you’ve probably done a million times. You probably had more important stuff to do and I selfishly took you away from that. I can be such a buzzkill so I understand if you’re ready to just go--”
“Prince Tom, don’t say something like that.” Raya objected. Although her voice was still very sweet-sounding, it had invoked a formidable presence that rendered me speechless to what she had to say next. I turned to face her to see she too appeared to be holding back tears. She walked closer to me and put both of my hands in hers and said, “There will never be anything more important than showing you, our Prince, around a place that has been apart of me for years. You even helped me immensely with gift shopping, which I am so grateful to you for. I’m glad I was able to share with you the fun things I like doing. And for you to be happy, well, it makes me happy witnessing that…”
I still couldn’t find my words, “Raya… I…”
Within an instant, she had released her grasp and stepped back from me. Her voice became genial once again as she coaxed me further, “When you’re ready to talk, I’ll listen. Your friends are probably just occupied with issues of their own, so it may seem like they don’t have time for you. Just try not to take it too personally, and most of all, try not to let it ruin your time away from what is upsetting you.”
I felt my anxiety beginning to fade from what she said. Over the past few days I felt so empty. I felt that no one understood or even cared. I was trying to feel that void of not being acknowledged or not being wanted. But then I came here. This place and Raya was starting to help me feel whole again. And for only knowing her for a short time, I was glad I had found a friend like her.
“Raya, thank you so much for that.” I expressed my gratitude toward the demon girl.
As if on cue with my words, an ominous bell began to toll in the distance.
“What’s that?” I asked as I scanned the area for the origin of the ringing.
“Oh, that’s just the temple where they do all the rituals and sacrifices and tortures, you know, stuff like that.” Raya spoke as if it was just some ordinary, everyday occurrence.
“Okay I gotta see that.” I said. Well, for the Underworld, it is kind of the norm.
“Alright, I’ll show you.” Raya went to pick up the bags of gifts that had been sitting on the ground by her feet.
“Here, let me get that.” I volunteered.
Raya became flustered and said, “Oh, you don’t have to do that, Prince Tom. I don’t want to burden you with having to carry my gifts.”
“Nah, it’s cool.” I held my hand up and the bags began to effortlessly float into the air the same way the packages did when Raya came to our lake house. “‘Kay, ready?”
Raya was amazed by my telekinesis. “That’s amazing you can do something like that. Thank you!”
“Yea, I guess it is.” I couldn’t help but grin over her compliment.
The two of us began to walk away from the courtyard, not noticing two gray figures that had been crouching behind some bushes hop up and take off in the opposite direction.
Raya and I rounded the corner as the gigantic bell recessed in its tower ceased its powerful resonance. I was expecting to see an ancient temple erected with stone pillars or something basic along those lines, but instead, what my eyes discovered was truly magnificent. It was an enormous cathedral designed in the style of perfect Gothic architecture. It was made of black stone that glimmered from the surrounding fire that spewed from the ground steadily. And the craftsmanship was superior. There was a significant amount of excruciating detail no matter where your eyes wandered, right down to the last arch. I was mesmerized.
“It’s… It’s…” I stuttered as I couldn’t quite think of a word to describe it.
“Wicked, isn’t it?” Raya stared proudly at the building. She asked if I wanted to go inside but I think she already knew the answer from how bewitched I was already in the temple’s beauty.
We walked under a series of flying buttresses that outlined the foyer of the temple. And I just couldn’t stop gawking at the sight of the art on the walls. There was depictions of torture and agony brought on by fire-breathing demonic figures and satanic language etched in its borders. Any Mewman would cower and flee but to us demons, it was glorious.
I stopped marveling long enough to declare to her that this is probably the coolest thing I’ve seen all day but she had started walking through a great passageway. I quickly followed behind her to enter a room even more darkly majestic. We walked into the grand hall that was dimly lit by floor-length candelabras positioned systematically near the walls and toward the center. There were rows of benches facing an altar made of a numerous amount of skulls with what appeared to be blood dripping down from it.
“Darn, seems like we missed them harvest the blood from the unicorn.” Raya mumbled to herself.
“Hey what’s that?” I pointed over to two large statues that faced away from each other behind the altar. We walked over to them and I saw a table with small wooden boxes filled with beads and rope used for making what seemed to be necklaces. I stepped up and started examining each one. There were beads shaped like eyes, fangs, bats, teeth, and skulls. Upon further investigation, I could see that in the hands of the statues were finished necklaces hanging from them.
“These are the founders of Yomi Town, Izanami and Izanagi.” Raya explained as she came to my side. “They were demon lords from long ago that originated from this region and became known as the Underworld’s greatest fighters of that time. My mother always told me stories about them during bedtime when I was little. I’m sure your own mother did the same…”
I intently watched Raya as she spoke. She really did know a lot about this town--No, the Underworld’s history. More than I did, that’s for sure. My parents and advisors focused my rearing on what my duties as a prince are and what they will be as a king. Although I may be the prince, I have never been to Yomi Town; a place of great importance to my people and home to two legends. I’ve never even been to Prickly Plains either, come to think of it. And that’s the home of my subjects. Raya’s home... My people don’t even know who I am or what I’m like. I mean, when I first met Raya she was afraid I would harm her. Am I really that out of touch with my own people and their lives? Have I been too preoccupied with what has been going on in Star’s life that I’ve neglected my own? If I’m to rule this world one day, I need to understand it and be more involved in it than I have been.
“Please, tell me more.” I implored her.
Raya continued, “Alright, Prince Tom... Well, Izanami and Izanagi were close companions and fought alongside each other during many battles. Their most famous--and final legacy--was what had transpired from the war against the demons and Mewmans. Izanami was captured during an ambush on the battlefield and held prisoner by the Mewman army. When Izanagi tried to save her, he was too late. They burned her as a show of force to the demon army, her necklace being the only thing he could recover from her ashes. And although he fought fiercely for her revenge, he wasn’t the same without her by his side. When his army retreated, he kept fighting until he died in battle… alone.”
“Tragic…” I murmured as I studied the statues.
“So as a tribute to them, this temple was built. Other events and activities take place here but this ceremony is the main highlight of the temple. The giving of the necklace.” Raya pointed at the hands of the statues. “Because Izanami and Izanagi were separated, tragedy ensued and created the key factor for our species losing the war. And even after the treaty was signed between the Mewmans and demons, many still do not trust them and fear they will try to separate us from those close to us again. Izanami and Izanagi were strong because of their unity. The necklaces solidifies a union by two people who come before the statues--which are the sacred presence of the demon lords--and seek their blessing to never have their own companionship separated.”
Upon hearing the end of Raya’s retelling of the two demon lords’ story, an idea popped into my head.
“Hey, you know what? We should make one together.” I suggested.
“W-h-what?!” Raya stammered.
“Yea.” I responded unabashedly as I started picking through the boxes of beads. “To symbolize our friendship.”
“Oh. Okay…” Raya said with flushed cheeks as she started helping me choose what should go on our necklace.
Within a few short minutes, it was complete and I held it up to show it to her. “Look, it’s finished! Do you like it?” I said exultantly.
“Y-yes.” she mumbled while still blushing nervously.
I turned toward the statue and said, “Now, let's hang it on--”
“EEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHH!!”
A blood curdling shriek came from the hallway and caused the necklace to drop from my hands in an instant. The frightening screech carried on as the commencement of chanting voices were now heard as well.
“Oh! They’re about to torture someone!” Raya exclaimed.
“What?! We have to see this!” I said excitedly. “Come on!”
I ran out of the room toward the screaming. It took Raya a moment to follow me as she looked back at the altar once more.
After spending some time in the temple, we finally headed on our way. We had been walking down by some of the shops again while talking about our favorite torture devices and how it would feel to be the victim in a situation like that.
I was on a jovial high as I told her, “That was the best part about today for sure!”
“Well I hope just not the torture.” She remarked.
“No way! The whole temple itself was freakin’ awesome! I’m so glad you showed it to me!” I clarified punched my fists up into the air triumphantly .
Raya halted in her tracks and fixated on me as a smile began to tug , “I’m glad you liked it, Prince Tom… It is my favorite place about this town…”
“Really?”
Raya nodded as her cheeks reddened once again. “Every year that’s usually where I spend most of my time… Something about it is just so calming to me. When you walk in everything that troubles you seems to go away, at least for a little while. So I hope it had the same effect on you…”
I gazed over at Raya and felt something I couldn't really explain. This whole time I was too busy thinking of being distracted when I failed to recognize something else. Raya wanted me to enjoy myself. She didn’t really know me but genuinely she wanted me to still experience what this town could do for me. Had she known all along that I came here for this sort of retreat? Or could she just sense that I needed this? It was true that I felt some relief but once she had put it back in perspective, I tried my hardest not to think of what I was trying to forget. Fortunately for me, there was something, or should I say someone, lying in wait for the opportunity to help me further.
“Raya!” A powerful and intimidating bellow came from behind me, causing me to almost jump out of my skin.
I turned around hesitantly to see a tall looming figure with a muscular build and dark gray skin. He wasn’t anywhere near the height of my Mom, maybe half her size at least. He had long, sharp horns like a springbok and wild crimson hair. His glowing yellow eyes were in a glare as his fangs shown. Although he was very menacing-looking, he was wearing a baby pink tank that read “Gneiss Guy”.
“Hi Dad…” Raya darted her head down as she greeted him.
Oh it’s her Dad. I relaxed a bit.
“So who’s your friend? This BOY!” He growled as he placed emphasis on the gender portion of his statement, the ground beneath him cracking.
I tightened up a bit and could feel the sweat break out over my face.
“Oh!” She perked up and held her right hand out toward me as if she were presenting me. “This is Prince Tom Lucitor.”
“H-Hi…” I replied shakily.
Raya’s father’s eyes shot towards me as they sparked even more, I felt my heart stop. He was silent and still snarling. But then all of a sudden, the killing intent that was emitting from the great Stone Demon did a complete 180. His face grew soft as he gave me the biggest smile I’ve ever seen. “Ah, Your Highness. It’s been some time since I’ve seen you. You were barely able to peek over your crib if my memory serves me correctly. My apologies for not recognizing you, our Young Prince. I am Albion, head of the Belmonte Family.”
He bowed. I sighed in relief.
“Raya!” His loud roar was directed at his daughter now but still caused me to jump again. “It was Piers and Peter who alerted me of your whereabouts and that you were hanging out with a BOY, only to come and find that it is His Majesty’s son! Why didn’t you come get the rest of your family to greet the Young Prince? Unforgivable!”
It was Raya’s turn to stiffen up in nervousness.
“No, no, It’s alright. We just met. Well actually, we met before. But--” I pleaded for her.
“Your Highness, will you please do our family, the Belmontes, the honor of courting you!” He proclaimed, though it seemed to be more like a demand than a request as he knelt to the ground with his head touching it. I faintly remembered that Raya put her body in the same position when she first met me.
“... C-courting? I do--” I stuttered, a bit confused by his word choice.
“Thank you, Your Highness!” He cried out happily as he scooped me up and took me away with Raya trailing behind us.

20.5 Special talk corner: Kantou Tournament Veteran Schools summit p. 128-133
And here is the long awaited captain interaction! Tezuka, Tachibana, Akazawa, Atobe, Aoi and Sanada team up to talk about their role as a captain. This is some really good banter!
My translations can all be found here.
P. 128
20.5 Special talk corner Kantou Tournament Veteran schools summit ( A captain summit)
Proposals to the Middle school Tennis world. In this book, you'll find a never read before project! The captains of Kantou's most outstanding schools have gathered! Crossing the fences of their schools, the captains will passionately talk about their sense of responsibility, worries, and the state of middle school tennis as it is now and in the future!!
Written by Inoue Mamoru (Monthly Pro tennis)
From Main planner/Inoue Mamoru (Monthly Pro Tennis editor): The captain's leading the strongest clubs have unwavering beliefs and philosophies. I think I'll be able to hear some constructive comments to the middle school tennis world if they look back at the municipals and regionals.
P. 129
Inoue: Thank you everyone for gathering at this busy spot today! This year's municipal's and Kantou regionals were filled with unusually high leveled competitions, so if you look back at it, are there are any ideas or suggestions you would like to give the tennis world from now on?
Tezuka: I think it has been a huge privilege to have received a spot in this competition. However, I think I can share a few stories of the player's of Japan's tennis world.
Aoi: You're so stuffy Tezuka!
Sanada: What are you saying! If you want to call yourself the representative of your club, it is your duty to state constructive comments! That means calling someone "stuffy" is… tarundoru! (Because Rikkaidai's captain is hospitalized, we called the vice captain Sanada-kun as substitution)
Aoi: W-well… uh… I mean…
Tachibana: Well, don't say it like that Sanada. Even if he's a captain, he's still a first year.
Sanada: So age has become the reason for a lack of self-reliance? When I was a first year, there were few hydration spots on the grounds, and I established the installation of vending machines that sell drinking water by sending in a proposal to the administration of the tournament.
Tachibana and Akazawa: (… you are the only 1st year who would do that)
Akazawa: By the way, this time 7 people should have been called. Aren't we missing someone?
Tachibana: Now you say it, I don't even think we're with 6.
Sanada: To be late… It's preposterous!
Tezuka: Don't think too much. Listen closely.
???: Hyoutei! Hyoutei!
Aoi: W-w-what is that!?
Atobe: (shines) It's me!!
Akazawa: It's you again! Stop fooling around bastard! When we were competing for 5th place, he also appeared with such flash.
Tezuka: It's been a while Atobe. Are you satisfied now?
Atobe: Aah, yeah I am. You guys, go home already.
Hyoutei's tennis club members: Yes!!
P. 130
Inoue: Hahaha, it seems like everyone is present. Is it okay if we get to the main issue at hand?
Tezuka: Feel free.
Inoue: Then, I wanted to know what you guys thought was the best match at this year's municipals and regionals?
Atobe: I haven't thought as far as discussing that, ahn.
Aoi: I don't really know what I'd pick for the municipals
Sanada: Actually, can you please tell us what you mean with "Best match", Inoue-san?
Inoue: Ah, that's right (as expected Sanada-kun has an air of intimidation). First, the match's level should be high. And also fascinating the audience with the development of the match… things like that.
Sanada: Then we don't have any matches like that. From the start, our goal was qualifying, the contents of our matches don't matter.
Atobe: Heh, it can't be helped that you guys had dull matches.
Sanada: What!
Atobe: Oh well, the best match was ore-sama's and Tezuka's, and it's not like anyone will object to that.
Sanada: What about that was the best match! Breaking down in the middle of the match, it's disgraceful as a player.
Atobe: You're not a romantic guy at all. It was kind of like a tv drama.
Sanada. Hm. Anyway, tarundoru Tezuka!!
Tezuka: Do not worry Sanada. I will definitely have recovered by the nationals, and will take you on in a perfect state of health.
Atobe: Hey, you guys, don't ignore me and just continue the conversation!
Inoue: Ah… then there's no doubt about Atobe-kun and Tezuka-kun's match being the best? (Inoue note: After this, to prevent the quarreling and controversy, let them choose 3 best matches)
The captains chose?
Their municipal/regional's most favorite game (Best 3)
Tezuka (Seigaku) VS Atobe (Hyoutei) With Atobe-kun's severe pushing, they chose this match. The match development and the level of the players was high, and it was an undisputed amazing game.
Kamio (Fudoumine) VS Sengoku (Yamabuki) Tachibana-kun fiercely pushed this match. It's true that the match between the nationals level big gun Sengoku-kun and the tenacious Kamio-kun was intense!!
Akazawa/Kaneda (St. Rudolph) VS Oishi/Kikumaru (Seigaku) At the regionals, St. Rudolph lost, but the match where they defeated Golden pair was one with value.
P. 131
Inoue: T-then, is it okay if I continue with the next question (I wonder if I made a mistake in selecting my interviewees?). Who do you guys think is this year's best rookie? Ah, The definition of rookie is someone who this year, became a regular for the first time, appeared in a match and is relied upon as a player.
Aoi: (My heart's beating… if I get chosen as best rookie here, I'll get fan letters from 100 girls at the nationals…)
Inoue: As for my opinion, I think it should be Seigaku's Echizen-kun.
Tezuka: I'm taking your word, Inoue-san. Anyhow, despite Echizen's abilities, his character is still immature. If you're talking about him as a best rookie, he should improve his human nature.
Tachibana: If you say it like that, our group isn't fit to be the best rookie either. When they get heated, they do whatever without thinking.
Atobe: Then our Hiyoshi is a difficult case as well. That guy needlessly provokes, and he's also very antagonistic towards the club members. That guy Mukahi always irritates him. However, he's the kind of type that won't grow and will become menial if you don't push him.
Tachibana: I see. We all have our problems with our members.
Minami: Right, good grief.
Sanada: Well, isn't Echizen being the best rookie good. He created a sensation at the regionals, he's reliable.
Akazawa: If that's the case our Yuuta is… No, our Yuuta wouldn't win. If you guys choose Echizen, I wouldn't object.
Minami: Hm, hm, that's right.
Atobe: If it's like that, isn't Echizen our best bet?
Inoue: What does everyone think, it doesn't seem like anyone here has any objections to Echizen-kun..?
Tezuka: if everyone said it, it doesn't look like anyone has a motive to stubbornly refuse.
Inoue: Then I'll write down that everyone chose Echizen-kun as the best rookie.
Aoi: (M-my kind of topic…it has already moved on!!)
The captains chose (?)
This year's best rookie No1
Echizen Ryoma While he was in his first year, he became a regular of prestigious Seigaku, and until the semi-finals, he didn't lose once! With his small stature and offensive play, he suddenly became the hot topic of this year.
P.132
Akazawa: By the way, is it true that Echizen is the son of that "Samurai Nanjirou"!?
Tezuka: Ah, that's right.
Tachibana: So it was true!? I too thought he looked like him.
Atobe: I see. He who shook the world before, Samurai Nanjirou.
Inoue: That's right! With his heroic play, he evenly matched or even surpassed the veterans of the world, with his alias the Samurai, it's that Echizen Nanjirou!!
Echizen Ryoma's (Seigaku) real father
Echizen Nanjirou With his offensive and courageous play, he was nicknamed the Samurai, an unparalleled player. When he was at the top, he suddenly retired.
Sanada: Inoue-san. As a press member, you should be objective and calm at all times, and definitely not slack off in those areas!
Inoue: Ah… my bad, my bad, continue.
Minami: Oh well, isn't it okay?
Sanada: Anyway, Samurai Nanjirou… I've also admired his plays.
Akazawa: Huh!? You remembered him?
Sanada: Of course.
Tezuka: His play has left an extraordinary impression on me as well.
Tachibana:… I also recollect some faint memories… I think we were around 1-2 at that time, was he still active at that time?
Atobe: Aren't you guys glossing over your age ahn?
Aoi: Heeh, I don't care at all about that Samurai something.
Akazawa: What!?
Aoi: Well you know what they say "The older the wiser," like that? The elderly like you guys can remember the olden days much better.
Tachibana and Sanada: (Ugh!)
Akazawa: Hey. It's not because you're the greenhorn bastard here that you should be so conceited.
Aoi: Huh!?
Tezuka: Time flows evenly for all humans. You should remember that while you may be the youngest now that won't be absolute.
Atobe: Oh well, that urchin won't understand your lecture.
Aoi:…. S-such a thing….was it something I shouldn't have done?
Inoue: Well, it seems like there's a chance to change the subject now, we'll reach our conclusion soon… (The air has become somewhat uncomfortable)
Atobe: Hey, who's coming there?
Tachibana: Hm? That's…
P. 133
Oishi: Hah, haaah, haa…I'm sorry! Everyone, I kept you guys waiting!
Tezuka: Oishi!? Why are you…?
Oishi: Ah, Tezuka came as well? This is a problem. Sorry, I learned of the meeting just now…
Inoue: Oishi-kun, did you come because you thought you missed the captain's meeting?
Oishi: Yes. It's like that.
Atobe: Hm, we didn't call you.
Oishi: Huh!?
Tezuka: Oishi… when I was absent, you showed a full sense of responsibility. Because you were there, I could leave the club to you, and could completely devote myself to my cure with a peace of mind.
Sanada: No matter how many times you say it, injuring your own body is tarundoru!
Tezuka: However, at this place, you should leave it to me. I want to show my duty as Seigaku's captain.
Oishi: That's right, Tezuka. If you're here, I'm not anxious at all. Then, please excuse me. I'm sorry to have troubled you (Oishi, leaves)
Inoue: (What a troublesome bunch) Then, let's wrap it up this time.
Sanada: The municipals and regionals were just a side show. We will show our true strength at the nationals.
Tachibana: We share the same sentiment.
Aoi: We won't lose either!
Akazawa:…. (Everyone seems lively).
Atobe: Ore-sama is going on a vacation to my villa at the Aegean Sea. Well, I will be awaiting reports of your activities there.
Minami: Yeah! Please look forward to us!
Atobe and Sanada and Tachibana and Aoi: You, how long were you here?
Minami: Ha…!? Haven't I been here from the start!!
Tezuka: (….I didn't notice him either…) Then everyone, let's meet at the nationals.
The summit is over. Inoue Mamoru's impressions
Even when it got a bit noisy later on, with each school's captains here, there was a presence and sense of responsibility that completely overwhelmed me. As long as these guys are here, they will hold the hope of Japan's tennis from now on… It seems likely that I have said enough. When the nationals finish, I think I'm going to hold another convention like this.

Yoonmin Fandom Metrics
Last month a survey was conducted to analyze the metrics of the Yoonmin fandom. Here are some of the responses:
Of these 903 responses, 826 of them (92%) of the respondents had selected that yoonmin are their only ship, their main ship or one of their main ships. This group is the one that will be focused on for the rest of this analysis. (Also was that one person lost? Did you get home okay?)
Of this focus group who mainly ship yoonmin, the bias distribution was:
Unsurprisingly, Min Yoongi and Park Jimin, the two individuals responsible for the YOON and the MIN in yoonmin, came out as the top two biases’.
However, Min Yoongi, with a staggering count of 453 votes (55%) heavily outweighed all the other members, hereby proving that he was in fact not fucking around when he claimed “Sorry mom, your son’s too popular,” in his Mic Drop verse.
As a follow up to these results, respondents provided their second bias (if any) to help the other members stand a chance against Rap God Min Yoongi.
(He still took a whopping 23% of the votes).
The most interesting part about these graphs is that it alludes to the fact that most yoonmin stans bias Yoongi (not Jimin, although he is obviously second in rank). This is probably due to the fact that of the “popular” bangtan ships, Jimin’s name comes up multiple times. Thus Jimin stans are more evenly split in who they ship Jimin with, but there are not that many “popular” Yoongi ships.
A little more detail on the focus group and how they came to stan bts and ship yoonmin is summarized in the following graphs.
BTS’ popularity has grown exponentially, with the greatest increase seen from 2014-2015 due to the release of their HYYH series. A parallel trend was observed in this analysis with the growth of the Yoonmin Fandom.
The next part of the survey focused on “Secondary Fan Creations” as Mr. Bang likes to call them. This includes but is not limited to: fan art, fan fiction, photo edits, video edits, blog posts, memes and so forth.
The results show that 99% of us are on Tumblr for the right reasons.
In terms of creating fan content, 31% of the respondents bless us on the daily with their contributions to the fandom. (Amen.) The rest of the majority enjoys and wishes to contribute to doing the lord’s work. 2% of the respondents who consider yoonmin their main or only ship do not create or want to create fan content because they think it is wrong (and that’s okay - to each their own).
The next question was the most revealing and one of the most important to this analysis. Of the 861 responses, 640 voted that the reason they ship yoonmin is due to their relationship / interactions themselves. Only 2-4% of the respondents said they shipped yoonmin because of how they look together/aesthetics, fan content, external influences, or the availability of yoonmin materials in the fandom itself. This outright disproves the common (and tired) anti-yoonmin stan (and “rare pair” stan) claims that yoonmin is usually shipped for these reasons.
Of the 30 respondents that chose “other” their reasons often eluded to specifics moments / interactions by yoonmin. Some of the more notable mentions are:
“They look like they understand each other’s struggles.“
“Their real and supportive friendship, they know each other's limits and share their vulnerabilities, so soft for each other, involve each other in the most intimate parts of their life.”
“Everything?? Idk they just vibe with me best, they're lovely and sift but also savage and have a really fun dynamic that i enjoy best.. they calm me when I’m upset as well which is like surprising bc I don’t calm down easily. +their soft moments like the earlier answer.”
“Because Yoongi is so whipped for Jimin and they look at each other like they have galaxies in their eyes“
“They look like they are real / they act like they are married / they honestly seem like they’re in love.”
“the way they are with each other in general. platonic or not, they love each other, care for each other a lot and it's nice to see. “
“From what I saw, it felt very real. Like yeah, I could get that super unbreakable bond with all of the BTS ships but for some reason, Yoonmin just stuck out for me and it felt really genuine and not just for fanservice.“
“Just...everything” (Many of you said this or voted for multiple categories from the above so everything x 10)
“You Know” (thank you Anonymous, I do know :’).
There were so many other great ones yoonmin is such a soft ship with even softER STANS istg but I won’t post them all here but you can see them in this supporting post.
It is commonly believed that ALL yoonmin stans only ship them because of the “typical” subby bottom jimin/ dom top yoongi stereotype. The data below proves this is untrue - as 34% of respondents don’t care at all or like all dynamics equally, and 18% prefer a more balanced switch relationship dynamic. Combined, the votes for these categories make up over 50% of the responses, signifying that, no, not all yoonmin stans, in fact not even the majority of yoonmin stans, ship them for this reason.
It should be noted though that, of the 48% of fans who expressed a preference for a specific relationship dynamic, 5% preferred top jimin and 43% preferred top yoongi (so yeah, top yoongi is more popular, but only to the minority group of the stans who actually have a specific dynamic preference).
Similar results were observed for which dynamics yoonmin stans feel are most realistic.
FANDOM FAVOURITES
Special thanks to my partner in research @syubd ♡ who organized and compiled the below lists of fandom faves.
Note, I have removed the “N/A” and “All” from the rank to more accurately reflect individual favourites. Furthermore, I have removed myself from the rank to eliminate an obvious bias as it is my survey most of the people who took it would be my followers (but thank you to all the people who chose me as their fave!)

Comments: This category was added to the survery much later and therefore did not have as many responses as the others above. Nonetheless, there’s seems to a correlation between who you ship (yoonmin) and fave BTS song. Many of the songs on this list have “yoonmin parts in the MV/Choreo” like Spring Day and BST, or are song’s where the two have particularly shined and / or produced. (They might also just be on this list because they’re lit songs in which case truuuu I agree).
