Interests Intro
I know I’m making a big assumption that anyone cares about what content I’m consuming, but when I hyperfixate on something, oh boy will I never shut up about it. So, to spare my friends and family from my extensive rants, I will be posting here about it. Feel free to not read any of this and get to the juicy stories on other parts of this blog, but to get a comprehensive view of my life as an asexual person, read ahead to see what content catches my interest!
Disclaimer: there will be a lot of discussions of old emo and pop punk bands in this section, and no I will not apologize for it.
That being said, here is a list, current to Nov 2023, of a bunch of stuff that I'm into:
Music - format: Artist {favorite album and/or “song”}
Fall Out Boy {Folie à Deux - “(Coffee’s For Closers)” and American Beauty/American Psycho - “The Kids Aren’t Alright” and Save Rock & Roll - “Miss Missing You”}
Sleep Token {Take Me Back To Eden - “Euclid” and “Chokehold”} Who gave them permission to include the lyric “So if your wings won’t find you heaven I will bring it down like an ancient bygone” in “Euclid” ??? Gives me goosebumps every time I listen
The Vaccines {“I Always Knew”}
Troye Sivan {There pretty much isn’t a song of his I don’t like, so I will just say that my favorite from his new album is “Still Got It” and I will always listen to “10/10” from In A Dream}
Wasia Project {“Remember When”}
I listen to a smattering of Kpop and Jpop bands: Official Hige Dandism, Gen Hoshino, Eve, The Oral Cigarettes, BTS, and Red Velvet
TV/Movies
Hell’s Kitchen (Maybe this makes me a bad person, but I love watching Gordon Ramsey yell at people at the end of a long day)
Heartstopper (because I am basic)
New Girl (a classic)
Red, White, & Royal Blue (also because I am basic)
Young Royals (because sometimes you need to witness a love story that will shake you to your very core)
DreamWorks’ Voltron: Legendary Defenders & She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (they are a set and no I will not be taking criticism on that)
Video Games
Five Nights at Freddy’s (I know way too much about the lore of this series. It's borderline a problem.)
Oxenfree (I haven’t played the second one yet but the first one has a very special place in my heart)
Pokémon (I’m a Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl stan but I understand that is probably an unpopular opinion. I just really love Luxray, okay?)
Books!
Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse: The original Shadow & Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. The magic system is really unique and I love how Bardugo writes her characters.
Red, White, & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
The Simon Snow Trilogy by Rainbow Rowell
Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz. This book (and the sequel) always destroys me emotionally, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Rook by Daniel O’Malley: The only adult science fiction book series I enjoy reading
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao: It’s like Pacific Rim combined with Chinese folk stories. It’s so cool.

Six of Crows Review
Alright, first book review on this blog...here we go: *spoiler warning, duh*
Book: Six of Crows Author: Leigh Bardugo
My Rating: 5/5
First off, this is the first YA fantasy I've ever read so I have no idea what I was expecting...and I fuckin loved it.
Second, I binge read this book in three days and it usually takes me a month to read anything ever so that's definitely saying something. I came for Kaz Brekker after watching Shadow & Bone on Netflix and stayed for the amazing plot, diverse and intricate characters, the incredible action and twists, and of course Kaz Brekker. The one thing that I loved was how fast paced this book went, and I genuinely could not stray far from the book because of how addicting it was. There was something in every chapter and you never got bored. The last part had taken the most time for me to complete because of how much action Leigh crammed in the last 60 pages, which made it a bit hard to follow along but it was still epic.
The Characters:
Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Wylan, Nina, Matthias
"“What’s the easiest way to steal a man’s wallet?” “Knife to the throat?” asked Inej. “Gun to the back?” said Jesper. “Poison in his cup?” suggested Nina. “You’re all horrible,” said Matthias."
The most diverse set of characters I have ever met. There were 6 characters, and the POV's were constantly changing and at some point, while I read someone else's chapter I was worried about the other characters and anticipating the next chapters. This was honestly an amazing decision to tell this story and I never got sick of the characters (except maybe Matthias, sorry).
Not only does Leigh do an excellent job portraying trauma in her characters (especially Kaz), she also keeps the character's as diverse as possible, from Nina being a plus sized character with badass confidence to Wylan overcoming his dyslexia and even Inej being a brown character. Every character had their own stories and the flashbacks/backstories were always a pleasure to read through.
Kaz Brekker is a stone cold, morally grey, manipulative, and terrible criminal which of course...makes him an even better protagonist. He definitely rocks the Hot Boy Who Is Mean To Everyone Except That One Chick Because Of His Tragic Backstory trope.
"There was no part of him that was not broken, that had not healed wrong, and there was no part of him that was not stronger for having been broken."
He is an anti-hero with his own plans and goals, while also caring so much about his crew that he would do anything for them. I'm very excited to see his character develop with Inej in Crooked Kingdom as well as his relationship with her because I am too obsessed with the two of them. I also enjoyed how Leigh allowed Kaz to fuck up and make mistakes, showing that he wasn't just some perfect character that knew everything about everything, and reading his inner dialogue when he realized his fuck-ups felt refreshing. His backstory was very well written and very tragic (we get it he's emo). It felt so personal knowing why he was they way he was when he sealed himself off from the world. He's also drippy as fuck.
Inej Ghafa just radiates bad bitch energy and when Kaz called her "dangerous" I screamed "DAMN RIGHT". Her mental drive was beautifully written during her chapters, especially while she climbed the incinerator.
"The heat of the incinerator wrapped around Inej like a living thing, a desert dragon in his den, hiding from the ice, waiting for her. She knew her body's limits and knew she had no more to give. She'd made a bad wager. It was as simple as that. The autumn leaf might cling to its branch, but it was already dead. The only question was when it would fall...
Should she jump now or simply wait for her body to give?
Inej felt wetness on her cheeks. Was she crying? Now? After everything she'd done and had done to her?"
Most importantly, she was a raw character who pushed herself throughout the book not just for herself but for the rest of the crew. She was selfless but she was also incredibly strong, driven by her future. Inej is the most inspiring character in the book and I have fallen in love with her more times than I could count. (lowkey carried the team imma be honest)
JESPER FAHEY Y'ALL. My queer sharpshooter king. I think I related to him the most and I loved every chapter with him. Though, I felt like Jesper was treated more as a side character than a main one, especially since he was stuck with Wylan for the entirety of the heist but BOY WHEN I FOUND OUT HE WAS A FABRIKATOR...I might have also screamed. He was definitely the comedic relief and he always kept me laughing at his little comments. Excited to see him and Wylan get together and also hoping for more of Jesper's character.
"Well, we’ve managed to get ourselves locked into the most secure prison in the world. We’re either geniuses or the dumbest sons of bitches to ever breathe air."
“If any of you survive, make sure I have an open casket. The world deserves a few more moments with this face.”
Nina Zenik...bro. She is so powerful. The moment she took parem was *chefs kiss* and it was the most badass scene I had ever experienced. When I began reading her chapters I didn't really enjoy them but when the heist actually began her inner dialogue won me over completely. When she was with Jarl Brum I could not stop laughing at the things she was saying in her head, and even when things were intense she always had something to say which made her character come to life. Her personality is hilarious, and sarcastic and she's also so HOT like my gay ass was swooning. She is who I aspire to be, that is all.
Matthias Helvar. Personally, I didn't really like his character so much because of how stubborn and he was (and how many times I wanted to punch his stupid ass), however he was still a pretty cool character with some good moments in there. He demonstrated religious corruption well, and he definitely faced a lot of inner conflict due to the pressure of what he was taught when he was younger. His POVs were a little boring but I loved it when he called Kaz a demjin.
Wylan Van Eck was a super fun character to have around. I definitely enjoyed watching his character grow as he spent more time with the Dregs. I didn't love him as much as the big three (Kaz, Jesper, Inej) and don't have much to say on him except that I admired his strength throughout the last part, especially when confronting his father after hearing all the horrible things he said about his own son. Jesper defending him made me melt big time.
"He's smarter than most of us put together, and he deserves a better father than you."
I literally could not have asked for such a creative group of characters and to see them work together makes me feel like I'm part of a big, criminal family.
The Ships
The ships were a fun addition to the story and the best part was that they never overstepped the actual objective of the plot but rather worked with it to enhance the connections between each character.
Kaz and Inej: Let me just cry for a second.
"She'd laughed, and if he could have bottled the sound and gotten drunk on it every night, he would have. It terrified him."
"I will have you without armor, Kaz Brekker. Or I will not have you at all."
"I'm going to get my money, Kaz vowed. And I'm going to get my girl."
This one hurt me. I am in love with these two and their relationship with each other makes it so much better. They are not meant to be together yet they are connected in so many ways. I did not think I would fall in love so easy, but here I am.
Matthias and Nina: I was not convinced by these two, especially with how weird their relationship was. They constantly seemed like they hated each other (valid) and some of their romantic scenes felt forced. In the end, I enjoyed seeing Nina grow on Matthias to wake his stubborn ass up. I swear that man refused to have feelings. Anyway, I still have mixed feelings on these two.
Wylan and Jesper: They are so cute. Like insanely cute. Like even I was blushing during their cute scenes. Their relationship isn't as developed yet so I am excited to see them in Crooked Kingdom.
Final Thoughts:
Representation? Check
Map? Check
Two maps?!? Fuck yeah
Amazing plot and worldbuilding? Check
Hilarious banter? Mhm
Great writing? Check
Well- written characters? 100%
Overall, this story will forever be my comfort book and I was impressed by the YA fantasy side of literature. It's hard to believe yet comforting that these characters are my age, makes me feel powerful. I loved every bit of this book and now I kinda wanna grab some friends and pull a heist.

ivan and aleksander for character asks?
Oh yes the emo besties <3
Aleksander:
First impression: lbr I didn't care much about him in the books, I found him interesting but that was about it.
Impression now: thank you Ben Barnes for ruining my life and MAKING ME FALL IN LOVE with Aleksander Morozova. He's a super complex and interesting character, definitely very well written, morally grey and I'd say he's more of an anti hero than a villain, also he had a Point™ about a few things and I'm sad bc of how much potential he had in RoW and how underused he went.
Favorite moment: "fine. Make me your villain". And his death scene because rereading it now makes me want to cry.
Idea for a story: proper redemption arc, as well as corruption arc with Alina. Enough of the good girl trope, I want them both to go unhinged. It's what they deserve. Let them be feral.
Unpopular opinion: oooh boy time to get cancelled. He really did love Alina, he was right about the fold being the only way to protect Ravka, he is not a horrible and irredeemable person and he deserves a proper redemption arc and to not be permanently killed off. You hear me, Leigh? I sure hope you do.
Favorite relationship: darklina, but also I would love to explore his friendship with Ivan more, and also I'd like to know about his relationship to Sankta Ulla, his apparent half-sister. Morozova family fluff.
Favorite headcanon: he's afraid of the dark. He likes going horse riding with Alina in the early morning. He's alive and well.
Ivan:
First impression: I hated his guts in the books I'm sorry 😭 saw him in the show and was like "huh ok kinda hot... They also seem to have made him less of an insufferable prick, good for him".
Impression now: my gruff traumatised loyal soldier man. Would die for him. He's so complex and deep and an amazing character and honestly be deserves so much better in every way possible.
Favorite moment: when David raises his hand to speak and Ivan looks between him and Aleksander like ???? But also the fete scene with Fedyor <333
Idea for a story: reincarnation trope in modern Ravka for him and Fedyor.
Unpopular opinion: he is not an asshole but idk if that's an unpopular opinion anymore 😂
Favorite relationship: Fedyor <3 but I also love his limited interactions with Aleksander (I want moreee), and I have an elaborate headcanon constructed around him and Zoya being very close friends.
Favorite headcanon: he's half-Fjerdan! Also Julian Kostov, Fedyor's actor, has this hc too so it's basically canon now. Julian and Simon are the captains of this ship and are keeping us well-fed.

i finished s&b and i'm thinking so many thoughts
SPOILERS FOR THE SHOW + BOOKS
when replying to this please don't put in any soc / kos spoilers since i've only read s&b
WHERE THE FUCK DO I START
the crows, zoya, mal & alina working together was something i believe we were very deprived of in the books and i really wanna see more of
they're like the coolest most attractive team ever what the fuck
it was obvious that they made some logistical changes to the lore (aleksander having a piece of the stag in his hand rather than just controlling her through the fact that he killed it like in the books) but it also made it make more sense (obviously, i mean it's been about a decade since leigh wrote the books so she definitely thought things through more)
them revealing aleksander's name that early definitely surprised me because of how much later it happens in the books - it was also way more casual than it was in the books
after that i was like "at least they didn't reveal that he's a descendant of morozova"
and then they did
which doesn't anger me a lot its just that it was something that was so important when alina found out in the 3rd book
but we have to remember that this isn't just from alina's pov and we're gonna see stuff she doesn't even know yet but it still seemed so crazy to learn in the first season
the making of the fold scene was very cool i have to say
i am a mal stan now and archie renaux might also be convincing me to be a mal simp-
that scene at the end with aleksander saying "follow" and those dark shapes following him - i'm pretty sure those are nichevo'ya and honestly they look so cool
the special effects in general were so fucking amazing
the cast was amazing
and now about the crows: i have basic background info but haven't started soc yet so this was generally my first real reaction to the characters
first off - they're all so fucking cool
jesper is the loml
kanej is so cute i mean- soulmates
nina and matthias had pretty good development and i loved their enemies to (almost) lovers arc but that last scene of them makes me so sad i really wanna see him start trusting her again
that's all the thoughts i am thinking for now. i love malina, i love kanej. fuck the ancient emo bitchboy but stan benny b. the cast is amazing.

alina needed the help of literally every side character and several deus ex machinas to fight the darkling...but in the end all she had to do to defeat him was stab him when he was distracted and emo. excellent storytelling, leigh. not at all anticlimactic.
😂😂😂
So true, anon. Also, that whole stupid line about "I don't need to be Grisha to wield Grisha steel" would have been a lot more impactful if the Gregverse existed in a world where the Grisha were the evil overlords and not a persecuted group fighting for power 🙄
But now you're telling me that Alina is forced to go on this journey of finding the amplifiers because that was allegedly the only way to defeat the Darkling but when she does, she gets punished for it and wouldn't ya know? You could have just stabbed him the entire time????
Oh and everyone's most hated character conveniently came back to life 😒

Yay I'm here!!
I missed a couple of hours, cause guess what?? I finally cut my hair!! Lexi's style!!! I'm so happy!! 😆It feels so good (although I had to take a shower cause returning home it started raining and I got all wet) anyways, lets dive into the pain:
Alec scaring the living hell out of David never gets old 😂
"But real strength was not in surviving the presence of pain. Real strength was in suviving the absence of love." Could David stop being perfect? Me heart cant handle it🥺
Someone among them!!! Shit.
The seelie queen was assassinated??? Wow
"David had to admit, he looked damn good with it." I shouldnt be laughing😂😂
Yessss. David is so precious I cant-
"It hurt David so much that he couldn’t give that to his boyfriend." My baby... 🥺🥺
“I’d like to take care of the New York institute,” David said now. “Because Jace Herondale and Clary Fairchild took care of me.” (I leigh screamed. Please... I love him so much its not healthy...)
This conversation is giving me 5 more years of life 💙💙
"The memory hurt. But not for long. It was replaced by another man. A man with golden eyes." I may have teared up a little bit 🥺🥺
"David hadn’t known love can literally change the world – not until he heard about Alec Lightwood changing the world for the man he loved." jdhehwlb THISSS. Like, he WILL be remember like this!!!
"All I ever wanted was to be like you.” I'm literally speachless...
“To be entirely honest, I did all of that for Magnus.”😂 And we love you for that Alec!!!
THAT QUOTE!! I REMEMBER THAT QUOTE!! (the one about being a hero) I even have it on my notes cause I loved it 😂
Now that I'm analyzing it... This doesnt give a good vibe... "He wanted to be the one the hero went to hell for"... Maybe.... You know what?? I'm not going to think more cause I'll get worried
“What’s that?” the Consul frowned, pointing at his neck. By the angel! David was going to have words with Max when he saw him again. “Uh,” David said. “Mosquito bite.” (lmaoo😂😂 David, he is the inventor of bad excuses that have to do with necks!!! Thats not going to work!!)
"I came to check on how you were doing.” tysm for reminding me my love for Simon💙
Ok, but they are so right!!
OH gods!!! He noticed the hickey!! 😂😂
“But I have been to hell - and I know it’s real,” Simon Lovelace said, his eyes cold. “And when we find out who hurt my family, I will send them there myself.” (Dark!Simon has so much potential, just imagine!!)
Wuuu, second pov!!
“I did have a latte,” her mother said with a straight face. Georgia didn’t find that funny. (Sorry for laughing...)
I relate to Selena on a spiritual level
"She wondered if all siblings were like that – where one was the sun and the other was the moon." I LOVED THAT COMPARISON!
Maryse??!! OMG. That scene was so heartbreaking but beautiful!🥺 Like... The comfort Maryse gave Izzy just warms my heart 💙💙
“And once I do, I’m going to strangle them with my whip.” (THAT LAST LINES THO! SIZZY ARE SUCH BADASS!!)
Third pov here I come:
"People like Anjali and his Bapak – they were overwhelmingly beautiful. They executed so much power and confidence that sometimes it hurt the eyes to look at them." Yup, they are gorgeous💙💙
A row of colour coordinated file binders. A mug that said ‘Bad Bitch’. A battered copy of A Handmaid’s Tale. (Now I kinda want to do a moodboard...)
Anjali is such a badass who speaks nothing but truth
Sjhsjwnsi I'm screaming!!! My phone is literally connected in the bathroom and I cant stop reading 😂
“I need you to get better, Anjali,” he whispered. “Cause I would very much like to take you there.” (🥺🥺🥺My heart)
He had looked at the most beautiful institute and had been reminded of the most beautiful girl. (ngl, I love them more than I love myself)
“Not everything,” Rafael told her. “I know someone who can help.” (Yup, now I'm scared🙂)
Ok ok, last POV
“Well, now we don’t know that for sure!” Max grinned. “Who knows what they get up to? Maybe there is someone occasional boning in the bone city.” (Jesus fucking christ Max!! 😂)
“Besides, you will be immortal. You can keep an eye on Max.” Max grinned widely at the other boy. “You wanna be my immortal buddy, Jack-Jack?” “Okay now I do have second thoughts,” (the chaotic energy they give together!!)
The London Boys!! I'm so happy!!
Jackson and Max. Thats it. Thats the comment
Idk, but there is something so comforting in seeing Kit and Ty as adults🥺🥺
“If the assassination attempt on Magnus had been successful, we wouldn’t be sitting and talking like this,” Kit pointed out. “The nephilim and downworlders would be at war.” (Yess, if they would have killed Magnus the war would have started. Smart little shits!!)
Kitty be like: Will you☺️go investigate☺️☺️ a case☺️☺️with me?? ☺️
Mavid supremacy only!!
“Everywhere is Paris when I am with you.” My heart, my soul🥺🥺
Max, no!
“Marriage and children…They are not for everyone,” Kit said. “It doesn’t complete a relationship and the lack of it doesn’t make your relationship any weaker. Ty and I are we very happy together. And for us, that’s enough for now.” (OK, but its just feels so nice to have this topic included. THANK YOU!)
“Mina will have your head if you don’t get married. She has been working on a Pinterest board for years now.” (That lil shi. I love her 💙)
Wow. I loved their conversation. Its beautiful!! 🥺💙
I... I... WTF DANI??
SERIOUSLY?? SERIOUSLY?!?!? DANI I JUST WANT TO TALK- And the fun fact!!! Not funny Dani!!!
Now i'll go to sleep thinking about this 🙂
Anyway, amazing chapter, Mavid supremacy, love Alec, Rosewood shiper, and WTF is wrong with the end??? 💙💙
Your love for David makes me so damn emo send help 🥺🥺🥺

interests tag!
I was tagged by @lxncelot, thank you so much for the tag! this sounds like a lot of fun and I loved reading your answers.
𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂
fave genre? rock in its broadest definition (so like, anything ranging from hard rock to pop rock to alternative ballads). I also listen to a lot of pop!
fave artist? all time low! but ~historically~ I’ve always been very into 5 seconds of summer (less so now, though I still listen to their older stuff) and twenty one pilots. as for solo artists, my favorite is probably rosalía though I also enjoy halsey. i was your, how do you call it? local 2015 emo kid. just look at my top albums of 2017 - outrageous.
fave song? my go-to answer for this is she will be loved by maroon 5 because I am 💫a softie💫. I think nowadays it’s my favorite song more so out of habit and nostalgia than for the actual song, but it still means the world to me.
most listened song recently? according to spotify, dinero by trinidad cardona. tiktok has won this one, folks 😞 according to last.fm, el tango de roxanne from moulin rouge (broadway version). which I find much more likely, but you never know.
song currently stuck in your head? none! though I’m listening to the piano version of once upon a december that’s on my desktop music player on here, so I’ll inevitably get it stuck in my head later.
5 fave lyrics? I have a note on my phone for that lol
“You’re dripping like a saturated sunrise / You’re spilling like an overflowing sink / You’re ripped at every edge but you’re a masterpiece / and now you’re tearing through the pages and the ink.” Halsey, Colors
“Begin with bullet, now add fire to the proof / But I’m still not sure if fear’s a rival or close relative to truth.” twenty one pilots, Bandito
“Fools said I, you do not know silence like a cancer grows / heed my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you / but my words like silent raindrops fell / and echoed in the wells of silence.” Simon & Garfunkel, The Sound of Silence and generally the entirety of that song because how beautifully is it, seriously?
“How can I sleep at night, there’s a war inside my head / I found a lion hidden right beneath my bed / I will not hide myself from the tears that you have shed / ‘Cause I am a lion and you are dead.” Hollywood Undead, Lion and, once again, the entirety of that song
“I am not afraid to keep on living / I am not afraid to walk this world alone.” My Chemical Romance, Famous Last Words because I think that is the simplest yet hardest and most powerful thing you could ever say
radio or your own playlist | solo artists or bands | pop or indie | louder or silent volume I slow or fast songs | music video or lyrics video | speakers or headset | riding a bus in silence or while listening to music | driving in silence or with radio on
𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐒
fave genre? historical fiction, with fantasy as a close second (historical fantasy? you ask, to which I answer YES A HUNDRED TIMES YES.)
fave writer? if we’re counting classics and deceased authors, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, without a doubt. if we only mean contemporary writers, then Leigh Bardugo.
fave book? Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Terre des Hommes being its original title). a lot of books have marked my soul, but this once was more than that - it bathed my every bone in the dawn’s first light and sent singing magic spiraling down beneath my flesh. it’s entirely subjective, because it’s not a literal gift from God of a book, but... it meant a lot to me.
fave book series? the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo, and The Illuminae Files by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman
comfort book? harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban... yes I AM nine years old
perfect book to read on a rainy day? something atmospheric, preferably spooky with some gothic elements! I’ve been wanting to read Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia forever and I feel like it would work well with that ambience. also, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, which I have on my shelves but haven’t read yet! saving all of these for october so I can really get in the mood.
fave characters? disgusting of you to ask, but Nina Zenik & Matthias Helvar from SoC, Remus Lupin & Sirius Black from HP, Leo Valdez & Hazel Levesque from PJO.
5 quotes from your fave book that you know by heart?
suddenly I can only remember bits from assigned readings for school and I hate myself
“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.” Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
“To the glistening eastern sea, I give you Queen Lucy the Valiant. To the great western woods, King Edmund the Just. To the radiant southern sun, Queen Susan the Gentle. And to the clear northern skies, I give you King Peter the Magnificent. Once a king or queen of Narnia, always a king or queen of Narnia.” The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
“You aren’t a flower, you’re every blossom in the world blooming at once. You’re a tidal wave. You’re a stampede. You’re overwhelming.” && “Curse you and all your Saints,” he said to no one at all, then realized he was smiling. Crooked Kingdom
“Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.” One Hundred Years of Solitude
and the entire two-page death scene of this one character in Joseph Kessel’s The Crew that I had to read in 9th and 11th grade for lit class and I had to write a commentary on that death scene, an assignment I keep on me at all times in a folder and it’s genuinely the death scene that made me the most upset in my entire life but it’s written so magnificently it’s a literal apotheosis and I won’t give you all of it but it ends with “And into tender death the captain entered living still” and I haven’t been the same since the day I read that
hardcover or paperback | buy or rent | standalone novels or book series | ebook or physical copy | reading at night or during the day | reading at home or in nature | listening to music while reading or reading in silence | reading in order or reading the ending first | reliable or unreliable narrator | realism or fantasy | one or multiple POVS | judging by the covers or by the summary | rereading or reading just once
𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐒 & 𝐓𝐕 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖𝐒
fave tv/movie genre? honestly I dabble with pretty much anything? I’d say my favorites are period dramas and thrillers, but I can pretty much watch anything. i used to love dystopias and science-fiction so much, but that was a... dark age of my life.
fave movie? I cannot choose to save my life, and I’ve seen very few movies, but I typically say Coco, Dunkirk, or Prisoner of Azkaban. Also really love Jurassic Park <3
comfort movie? every single Disney classic ever but particularly Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, and Tangled; PoA, obviously; Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark; The Princess Bride (which btw I might have gasped out loud reading your tags, Olive, lol).
most rewatched tv show? I don’t even watch tv shows all the way through in the first place, so rewatching them,,,,, probably Los Misterios de Laura tbfh it was this Spanish murder mystery show that I used to watch religiously when I was a kid, and then they sold the TV rights to some American channel and that was my first heartbreak. that one episode where they investigated this murder in this supposedly haunted boarding school? could not sleep for days after watching it lol

Shadow and Bone Season 1 Review
Ok so I got distracted by a need to watch all of Ben Barnes' filmography (lmao) but here is my review : It was really fun to watch and it was clearly made with love which is already the main thing with YA fantasy, which is often turned into a soulless moneygrab when put on screen. The actors were GREAT. I did think that the Crows suffered from being mashed up with the Shadow and Bone story, but they were still a highlight. I also think it was a bit rushed, esp. when it came to Alina's training. The costumes were beautiful, I want a kefta now. Plus the crossover fanfic interactions btw the SaB characters and the Crows were just pure joy. Also Milo, obviously <3 I'm in hyperfixation mode so here, have an essay :
The "Shadow and Bone" Characters :
- Jessie Mei Li !!!!!! She really made me like Alina so much more than in the books, she absolutely is the 'human embodiment of literal sunshine' and she was a joy to watch. Her character's arc is cliché but her acting is so expressive and endearing, I really felt for her all the way through. (maybe I'm biased bc Jessie talking about her ADHD and seeing her thrive at the same time is like!!! i love them they deserve all the best.) I like that they made Alina more proactive - even though she does make some stupid decisions... but I just don't understand people who put that down as bad writing, like ??? have you ever met a real person who only makes wise, good decisions ?? a character like that would either be at the end of their story or just in the background because that makes them static. The things with the maps in the beginning does a good job of illustrating how she is just this one girl making rash, erratic decisions out of fear and loyalty and doesn't have a sense of the bigger picture, caught in the tide of bigger events. It works for her character. When it comes to the choice of making her half-Shu, I do think it really makes sense re: her character feeling like an outsider but I do understand the criticisms that the microaggressions felt too relentless and one-note. I am really looking forward to them introducing Tamar and Tolya and hopefully connecting to them over her heritage in a more positive way.
- Mal in the books was one of the most annoying YA characters I've ever come across, so I really liked that they made him much more of a loyal, devoted friend. I found his relationship with Alina cute, it really gives us the sense that these are two orphans who found a home in each other, childhood best friends (and potential sweethearts) separated by war, two army grunts and ordinary people caught up in the wheels of power and war that usually crushes people like them, it's a great way to introduce the dynamics of their world and it's a trope that always makes me emo. It felt a bit too one note to me, though, and too heavily on the nose, like Mal's only personality was his attachment to Alina (and his resentment towards the Grisha) and too much of her emotional arc also relied on him. Them hitting us over the head with the meadow scenes felt like pure telling instead of showing and it ended up being super repetitive and kind of annoying. I am willing to like this pairing, but I wanted more scenes of them just having conversations about things and really understanding why they like each other beyond the whole childhood friends bond that we're asked to accept exists at the beginning. So I hope there's more depth there in next seasons.
- Ben Barnes!!!! Just jksdfhgkdjghdf. I'm not a big villain stan usually and I hated the Darkling in the books but DAMN his performance is just amazing. They managed to make him more sympathetic and human while at the same time making clear the stuff he does is deeply horrible. There's the Magneto-aspect of 'well clearly his methods are fucked up but he's addressing a terrible injustice nobody is doing anything about' that makes it very tempting to root for him ; and again, well, like, Ben Barnes is so hot and charismatic it feels uncomfortable (which I guess is part of the point lol). His loss of humanity is, up to a point, understandable, brought about by despair, loneliness, grief and a sense of powerlessness - living so long he starts to see other people as disposable, losing so many people he stops caring, seeing over and over how hate never seems to stop, etc. It's a logical explanation for going insane.
But the hunger for power is also very much present as a motivation and this ambiguity is there constantly. Does he maybe come to genuinely care for Alina or is it totally bullshit ? I think he does, he's just so fucked up that it comes out as possessiveness and a need to control her. He wants Alina to be his equal but he's incapable of treating her that way. It's tragic, in a sense, but the show doesn't excuse his actions either. Like his monstrosity is a product of this world full of injustice, yes, and that warrants some compassion, monsters are always a symptom of their environment in some ways and dehumanizing them completely is an excuse ; but at the same time, he sabotaged his own cause anyway the moment he started to treat other people like things, as he does with Alina, because that just perpetuates the cycle of violence and hate. At some point he started feeling like he was the only solution and he was owed power for his sacrifices, and he's using his cause as an excuse. When Alina came to him, there was a possibility for redemption, taking down the Fold, and it's a test because there is finally someone on his level of power. But instead of seeking to remedy the power imbalance between them, he made it worse, by lying to her, manipulating her, etc, and the antler collar is the ultimate sign of this.
I love those scenes towards the end (the antler-based body horror has big Hannibal vibes, so messed up). I like Alina telling him they could have had this, that she had compassion for him and his cause, that they could have worked together, and he's the one responsible for screwing it up and this time his claim that he's the misunderstood victim ("Make me your villain") appears delusional and self-serving instead of somewhat justified. The almost-lovers to enemies vibes, the sense of lost potential, and the angst of the whole 'oh you could finally have been loved by people, too bad you fucked it up !', very juicy. There is this fundamental idea that power/respect/love is not something you are owed no matter how good your intentions are or because you're strong or you have suffered or you're willing to commit horrible drastic actions, you have to keep proving you deserve it, and trying to claim power without responsibility of care turns you into a monster. The thing with the stag was an excellent metaphor of the fact that there's things you can't take, they have to be given to you, and the wonderful power there is in understanding that is what allows Alina to harness the stag amplifier's power. This is really when she escapes his grim utilitarian outlook and a different way forward and owns her own power fully on her own terms.
Anyway I hope Alina gets to beat the shit out of him at some point that would be very sexy but I'm also looking forward to see how their arcs parallel and diverge from each other as Alina starts to grapple more with the implications of her power and the harsh dilemmas of war and her own dark side. I want to see him become scared of her, and I feel it will be more visible than in the books where he just has this cold aggressive facade all the time. This one feels a lot more openly emotional which is just a lot more interesting.
- As for the other characters ; Zoya mostly made me sad. The actress has the perfect vibes but I'm not sure I love their take on her character so far, it does make sense in terms of the later books - that she has internalized prejudice regarding her mixed-race heritage, that she is jealous of Alina because of how hard she's fought to get where she is and Alina kind of takes it away from her, etc. But I would have liked to see a bit more of her being badass and sharp-tongued in a clever (even if mean) way instead of spending most of her time being rejected by men and being racist towards Alina. I did like the ending though, of her actually seeing the monstrosity of the Darkling in action and the mention of her aunt. And her brief bonding with Inej was great, just because it was badass but also maybe because it could be a part of Zoya learning to accept her Suli heritage in turn, maybe not right away but in time, when thinking of that part of herself, she won't only think of her parents' ruined marriage and all the pain it caused, but also of that badass and brave acrobat girl who went toe to toe with these really scary monsters without even having any powers and !!!!!
- Also Leigh's cameo was so cute and as an aspiring writer this is just such wish fulfillment
- I honestly think that having the Crows there actually made the S&B story better ? Not only in terms of the much needed levity breaks but also in terms of themes. For instance, Matthias and Nina's story gave us a really raw and visceral view of how the Grisha are hunted. And Inej's relationship to Alina really gave us a sense of what Alina actually means to people who believe in the Saints in a way that doesn't feel just like 'ugh those superstitious people' because we know that Inej's faith is part of what makes her who she is and a person with morals, and something that saw her through the worst moments of her life. It feels so special that she got to meet Alina and given a sign that maybe the world is not completely shitty. And Alina's kindness towards Inej really gives you a sense that she might be, or become worthy of that belief in time, or at least that she wants to, that she's figuring out her power to really touch people's lives might be a good thing, and that she's starting to accept this responsibility more fully. And her arming Inej is a nice parallel to that. I'm very emotional about this scene, because one of the first things we see of young Alina is her taking out a knife to defend Mal from the bullies, because she's protective and brave, but she's also aware the world is a shitty place, and so her giving that knife to Inej is a sort of spiritual transmission and recognition of sorts, that she trusts Inej with that fighting power, that she'll use this knife to defend herself and her loved ones and not abuse it. It's so interesting. And a counter point to the Darkling's fucked up relationship to power that Alina might at some point get afraid she'll replicate. That you could see Alina trying to gather followers and using people's admiration for her like he did but instead she sets them free and empowers them. It's great. And I feel that when Inej takes to the seas, she'll think about Alina. (I do hope somebody tells her Alina's not dead at some point though god). Girls giving each other knives is my spirituality, honestly.
- And I also noticed an interesting parallel between Kaz and the Darkling in terms of being two emo dudes who like to wear black, are prone to violence and have a thing for two very powerful women they think are special and want to have at their side, but of course, they go about it in very different ways. The Darkling comes at it from a place of power while Kaz comes from a place of utter powerlessness, first of all, and he understands why it's important to set Inej free. Him spending the entire season trying to earn enough money to pay off Inej's indenture is the opposite to the Darkling putting that collar on Alina and while I do have issues with how the show portrays him, I do love that. Love is about setting the person you love free !!!! And that confrontation scene was so powerful, when Kaz tells the Darkling Alina was tired of being a captive ! Drag him !
- As for Genya, I liked the actress and her chemistry with Alina, but I'm not sure they did a great job of making her arc very clear, for instance what it means for her to get that red kefta, her relationship with the other Grisha, etc. Her and David are already very cute though. Also very much looking forward to see where that goes.
So yeah I think they did a great job with this bit actually, I enjoyed a lot more than I think I would and even though it is a very tropey story, there's plenty of depth there too.
The Crows :
- I'm a bit more nitpicky about this because I care about these characters so much. I think overall the problem is that the SaB story in the books happens on this massive scale with enormous stakes, and that next to that the Crows' issues feel less important ; it's like their impact is distorted by the gravity of the much larger story. Like for instance, Kaz in the books is very much at the center of everything, this larger than life trickster figure who knows and controls almost everything by sheer cleverness, and he has this sense of allure and mystique that can't happen here, and so his aura just shrinks. On top of that they're not on their home turf. Being introduced to these characters before they've reached their full levels of badass is weird - there is a reason why prequels generally happen after the main stuff, because they count on the love you have for these characters at their full potential to make you interested in their story when they were less badass and interesting. So I had several moments where I was like 'oh this feels wrong'. Tbh the idea that they would even volunteer to kidnap Alina in the first place, what with Inej's backstory, feels kind of wrong, esp since they had no idea of what would happen to her if they succeeded.
- But I still enjoyed a lot of it though, especially the fact that they were this force of chaos in the midst of this bigger narrative that's a lot more self-serious. The bits with the train, or the circus acts were very clever. A lot of the best moments in the show happen when they come to disturb the other plot in unexpected ways. I'm still dead over the whole 'Alina jumps into their carriage' scene, that was fucking gold. The team up at the end !!!! Alina and Kaz making a deal ! Inej stabbing the Darkling !!!! Them stealing the Darkling's carriage !!! They don't give a shit that the story is supposed to be super dramatic it's great.
- Jesper is the one character they completely nailed from start to finish and he's probably my favorite part of the whole show. He's very funny without being reduced to the role of comic relief ; he's just so! damn! cool!!!!!!! I honestly feel this is a thing they actually did even better than in the books, or at least Six of Crows where I felt Jasper kind of disappeared behind Kaz and they insist a lot on his flaws and issues. So before we dig more into those problems I love that they gave him time to be this ultra badass who saves the day several times ; while at the same time, hinting at further developments like his powers or his gambling issues. Kit Young is just perfect, confident without being arrogant, a bit cold when it comes to crime while at the same time being so obviously caring with Inej - I loved their friendship, that was so sweet. My main criticism is that they should have made it clearer he was bi because there are already people calling him gay and that's very annoying. I know some people had a problem with his hookup and like...I can see it's a bit of a cliché...the charming badass bisexual adventurer....it's a trope I kind of love though lmao and the scene itself felt kind of cute and fun. He's not the only person who is shown to have an active sexuality and he's also not the only queer person around and we know he's going to have a more substantial romantic arc later so eh. On a larger note I loved the little casual hints of completely normalized queerness - Nadia thirsting over Zoya, Fedyor and Ivan, Poppy, etc. Having grown up with fantasy where queerness was either completely erased or very tormented and problematic, this was refreshing as hell.
- Inej and Kaz...my faves... They have a kind of relationship which feels so rare and unique in terms of what exists on TV and while I don't feel they entirely replicated it, the core is still there - the mutual respect and building of trust, the longing, the repression, the trauma, etc. One thing I really like is their arc around faith - in the books, Kaz is dismissive of Inej's faith in ways that often feel really shitty and I like that he learns to be more respectful of it. It's very much linked to hope/survival ; Inej keeps this token from her parents and she hopes to find them again ; Kaz tells her it's no use and she'll survive better if she gives up. He believes Alina is a fake, while Inej wants to believe that myths can come true and there is hope for good things in the world. Kaz comes to accept that Alina is the real deal and, out of respect for Inej's faith, to stop pursuing her. I loved the bit about Inej struggling to kill as well - it's the dilemma of what her survival and that of the people she really cares about are worth in such a shitty world - her compassion is a good part of her but so is her survival instinct, and that's the part Kaz represents - that even after she's been through hell, broken in unfathomable ways, even if she gave up all hope and faith in the world, even she becomes dangerous and ruthless to survive, she will still deserve dignity, and to be treated better. And meanwhile she is willing to break her principles, which she holds so dearly, to save him, when he's never had anyone who cared for him like that - enough to keep him alive. That bit in the church !!!!! God !!!!!! Bye !!!!!!! And then him basically calling her his own version of a Saint, that he doesn't believe in miracles but he does believe in her !!! It's very emblematic of their whole arc ; he empowers her to survive in a ruthless world and loves her at her most dangerous ; but he loves her laugh too, he finds her a ship and her parents, he honors her capacity for love and hope even when he can't share it. And she sees that he's capable of doing better, that he's worth caring for. This whole thing kills me honestly and I can't wait to see where they take this next. I'm not mad they're a bit more soft and obvious than in the books, Kaz would just have come across as an an asshole otherwise.
- That said, there are bits of how they introduced their backstories I don't like. I get that making it so Inej was still tied to the Menagerie gave them a very powerful reason to want to kidnap Alina beyond greed so that they wouldn't look like very shitty people. But in the books Inej is terrified by the idea of simply seeing Heleen or the Menagerie and the way they have her interact with her feels weirdly casual and dismissive of her trauma. Also, in the books, the fact that Kaz had to convince Per Haskell to buy Inej's contract through a lot of effort, that he wasn't the one holding that above her head either, made the power dynamics more palatable. I especially disliked the scene where Kaz says he won't free other girls because just Inej is special, it makes him look like he has the power but he's just too much of a callous asshole to do it, and that he just freed Inej because he liked her which is absolutely not what their relationship is about at the start, it's a lot more about seeing Inej's dangerous side behind a facade of powerlessness and relating to her, in a sense, and this scene made it all feel cheap.
- Also, what was that about Inej having a brother ? Not a fan of that either. I'm afraid they're going to make her story all about finding what happened to him, and that's 1) too on the nose similar to Kaz's story and 2) it kind of cheapens her own arc, a female character realizing that what was done to her was wrong, reclaiming her own power and dignity and then making sure it doesn't happen to anybody else, harnessing her personal experience to save strangers, that's so powerful - making it about a family member at first, especially if it's about revenge, it's so much more simplistic and unoriginal and the perspective really annoys me.
- Also not a fan of Per Haskell not being there because he's a very important part of Kaz's evolution, so I hope he shows up eventually - and the way they introduced Pekka Rollins was kind of like...weird and out of place. I just found the Crows' introduction scenes stilted and not as cool as they should have been - well, Jesper and Inej were very cool, but we needed to see Kaz in action first, we needed to see why he's such a menace before we see him flounder later, and I just...I don't know exactly but it didn't work for me. Also this is a very petty thing but I wasn't crazy about the Ketterdam sets, I know this is probably a budget thing but in my head it looked like this incredible mix of Amsterdam and Venice - specific locations in the book directly remind me of parts of Amsterdam I know very well - and instead what we got felt like this very generic London-ish fantasy setting....so boring. Also a lot of scenes that felt to exposition-y. I don't mind that Kaz was a bit softer than in the books, like many people have said some things work in books and don't work on a screen, and you need to make the character's inner dynamics more explicit. But I do agree that, at the same time, he should have been more ruthless towards people outside of his group. Loved that scene where he faces the Inferni though, and how well they illustrated his disability and aversion to touch.
- I don't have that much to say about Nina and Matthias ; I'm still not super sold on the whole 'haha misogyny!' thing and I dislike that so much of Matthias' change of heart relies on the fact that he finds Nina hot. But I did think that the actors had enough chemistry to make their scenes together interesting and cute ; I loved the waffle scene. Even though it's disappointing that they didn't find an actress who was more clearly plus size for Nina, I still think Danielle does a good job bringing her bold, unapologetic energy. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Crows as a whole team.
So yeah, even though the season didn't feel like a perfect, coherent whole, it was just a lot of fun and I really hope they get renewed. In particular I feel like tying the first trilogy to the Crows' story could create such interesting parallels in terms of themes, about power, the cost of survival, hope, trauma, etc etc

She's not a Dany anti in the sense of hating her, but she did write posts being very critical of her and how she became increasingly hard to root for each season. And she reblogged Jonsa gifposts, whether romantic or not. But like you said, it's just her opinions/preferences and people are being bullies about it.
From the posts I’ve read, the criticism was directed at D&D’s writing, not Dany as a character. Of course it’s hard to root for a character who set a city on fire for no apparent reason, we still rooted for her because we were like “THIS WRITING IS A FIRE BOMB SHITSHOW, DANY WOULD NOT DO THIS”. The analysis Leigh wrote was pointing out that characters doing that are not characters to root for. Which is true! In normal circumstances, I would not root for characters doing that! I only did with Dany because the writing was so utterly absurd and horrifically written.
Once again, idk the context of those gif sets. I absolutely do not ship Jonsa even remotely, but I’ve reblogged Jon-Sansa gif sets in the past because any Stark sibling sets make me emo and got me hype for the next seasons. And they were two siblings who were with each other at the time so like.
But yeah, I agree with you anon, the bottom line is... why do you actually care what her preference is with a fictional TV show, the thing about fiction is we all enjoy different aspects of it. It’s absolutely absurd, and I’m going mad with that section of the fandom. I try to be above these stupid ship and character wars, and didn’t want to have to draw lines in the Shadow & Bone fandom, but with the level of vitriol that’s occurred before the show’s even aired, I’m already acknowledging that’s wishful thinking on my part.
#UGH#sarah rambles#asks#anon#thank u for the ask i agree and am not trying to come across as aggy at u anon <3#i am just FRUSTRATED tonight lmao

i get real bummed when people shit on mal because listen... i get it. i do. his character isn’t perfect but!!! the show is supposedly tweaking him (in a way thats Leigh Approved) and archie is the cutest lil dude. so i’m worried people won’t even give him a chance which is Big Time Dumb. also i am just as excited that ben barnes, THE prince caspian of narnia, is on the show but... how many times is the universe gonna give us a woman of color in the lead only to have the internet only receive and fawn over the white dude :\
I agree with everything you stated here and I'm thrilled with Jessie's casting. She has already become the character for me and I can't imagine anyone else in this role. She is Alina and Alina is Jessie 🥺 I also agree that the series is likely going to positively change and favor Mal and that Archie should be protected! I won't be hating on Mal at all and will continue sharing content of the character from time to time, too. I also share your concerns about people praising a white dude more than more diverse members of the cast. But I'm going to be fawning over both Jessie Mei Li AND Ben Barnes. I really love Ben as an actor, and have loved these characters since before casting decisions were made, so I guess I'm going to be contributing to your disappointment a bit 🥲 Ben as the Darkling has been and will likely continue to be the main source of my personal hype 🤷♀️ I've been enthusiastically indulging in and gifing and fangirling over all his work for the last year and loved the Darkling as a character well before that, and that will continue. I still love and will be posting about everyone else, of course. But my url is what it is for a reason. I like my problematic emo wizard boy 🖤
But I don't think it's the case that the fandom as a whole will favor only him. I've seen more edits of Alina than the Darkling and more edits of the 3 seconds of the Dregs than the TGT characters haha. And that's a good thing! Everyone has their faves and I think there is going to be a healthy balance of content overall.
#i just love him#but yes i adore jessie as well and will be hyping her as alina every chance i get#answered

Shadow and Bone (Netflix) Review
Disclaimer: I started this post as a review for both Shadow and Bone the television show and Six of Crows the book, but as I say later on, the show review got much too long. Stay tuned next week for Six of Crows review, and maybe even a Crooked Kingdom review if I finish it before then.
When I asked what people wanted to see in this space, the most requested content was book reviews. Fun fact: I’ve been reading the same book for like two months. It is a long book, and not that easy to read. I still haven’t finished that book but I did finish another one which I will not be reviewing today because I feel the need to discuss the Netflix show Shadow and Bone first. (The book I finished is Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, but we’ll get to that next week. I promise.)
Shadow and Bone (Netflix)
A week and a half ago I decided to watch Shadow and Bone on a whim, it is not what I’d usually be interested in but I am very prone to peer pressure and everyone on my tumblr dashboard was watching it. I watched it all in two days while I neglected my novel revision because I was down in the dumps. Was it good? Sure. Did I like it? Less sure.
The show follows a large cast of characters surrounding a central plot of Alina, a regular everyday map maker, finding out she is some sort of saint that can reunite these two nations that have been separated by a large slice of darkness that is full of monsters. It’s a pretty standard YA fantasy plot, she gets sort of kidnapped by the general of one of the armies who sweet talks her into believing that he wants to get rid of the darkness together. (He doesn’t). She has a childhood best friend, Mal, who is obviously in love with her and does some crazy stuff to get back to her and it’s all very romantic.
I’m sure anyone who has read the books, or even watched the show, is pretty angry about that synopsis but you get it, right?
From what I understand as someone who has not read these books, the show combines the original plot of the book Shadow and Bone, the first book in the Grishaverse series by Leigh Bardugo, and a new plot following the characters from Six of Crows. The events of Six of Crows happen after the events of, I believe, all of the Shadow and Bone books, so their inclusion in this is entirely new. (I believe. I probably should have done some research but this is what I’ve gathered from Tumblr.)
This results in a show that jumps around A LOT, which could have been confusing but I think it kind of worked in a way. I think they gambled on quality by including the crows, but in the long run it worked and everyone who wanted the crows involved were happy. I have one, tiny, small, complaint about it though and that is the inclusion of the Nina and Matthius plotline.
Nina is introduced as a grisha (sort of like a wizard, if you’re not familiar) who is supposed to help the crows kidnap Alina (the main character, very important grisha), but she gets kidnapped by witch hunters. That is her only connection to the main plot until the end, the rest of her scenes chronicle her time with Matthius (one of the witch hunters who she saves and then they fall in love, it’s very romantic). These are scenes taken from flashbacks in Six of Crows, except portrayed in a much shorter amount of time IMO.
My problem with these scenes and this subplot is that it has absolutely nothing to do with the main plot at all. I understand why they included it, I’m sure the fans wanted it, but I guess I just think it should have been included as a flashback later on when the characters become more important. (Kind of like it is in the book.) I also have a problem with how it sort of felt like insta love between a “witch” and a “witch hunter”, a little problematic in my opinion, but that’s getting too into the details.
A couple other negative notes: I’ve been told that Alina wasn’t intended to be Asian (or shu, as referred to in the show), and that any of the seemingly random racism in the show was added in because she was in the show. Obviously, I loved that they made the choice to make the show more diverse than the book might have intended, but I felt like the racist remarks were unneeded. They added nothing to the plot ultimately, and felt out of place since the cast was so diverse.
I think it was clear the show was made for people who have read the books, and I personally think that should not have been the case. I wasn’t really well versed on the lore of the grishaverse, and this first season didn’t provide me with enough information in my opinion. A fantasy show should spend more time lore building, I did just sort of feel confused a lot of the time.
Believe it or not, I actually did like the show! Just not for the plot. What I did like about the show was all of the characters. I really liked Alina despite my usual predisposition to not like main characters, I thought her and Mal were really cute. I liked that the misunderstanding of their letters being intercepted was smoothed over quickly, and that Mal was so accepting of Alina’s newfound power. I liked how the show jumped between the crows and the main plot until the end when they finally overlapped, with the crows joining the fight against the general who was actually trying to grow the darkness (called the fold). I love a good branching story that joins at the end.
And ultimately, I love lovvved the crows. Their scenes were the best, and I think that is possibly because they weren’t coming from a book besides the Nina and Matthius scenes. Also because the characters themselves were the best.
As I mentioned earlier, the crows were trying to kidnap Alina for a job. They’re a part of a gang, or are going to be, I don’t remember whether they already are in the show, but they take a job to kidnap Alina that offers a crazy amount of money. I should probably explain who the crows are, Kaz (the leader of sort, dark brooding sort), Inej (Kaz’s right hand woman, the spy of the group), Jesper (gunslinger with jokes, I love him), and then also Nina and Matthius but they aren’t involved in this season.
Their scenes were like a heist show suddenly, and I thought their dynamic was incredibly entertaining. Kaz is like all emo and dark and evil, and Inej is soft, religious, and also sort of dark and against killing people but...... she does......... for Kaz, and then Jesper is like the mood maker. They have to pull all these crazy stunts including disguising as entertainers, Jesper hooks up with a stablehand at one point trying to procure a horse, Alina straight up just locks herself into their carriage. The hi jinks, the banter, the longing looks between Kaz and Inej! The absolutely subtle way they did the Kaz and Inej relationship, knowing that at the start of Six of Crows (years later) they're still just pretending to not be in love. Needless to say, I finished the show and felt like I absolutely HAD to read the Six of Crows duology.
Which I think I’ll write a review of in another post because this got way longer than I intended it to!
Thanks for reading, I’ll see you next week (probably) for a Six of Crows review.

Dear Lawrence Kasdan So, You Say You Love Han Solo
Dear Lawrence,
I hear there’s a bit of a kerfuffle going on about the Han Solo movie you’re EPing and have co-written with your son. I wish I could tell you I was sorry to hear that, but in all honesty I’ve been hoping for the last few years that someone would kill this project with fire and then nuke it from space for good measure. Sure, most of the reason that large chunks of the nerd world have responded to the very idea of this film is that a lots of people, including me, think it’s a fool’s errand for any actor other than Harrison Ford to strap on Han Solo’s DL-44 blaster. But ever since the release of The Force Awakens, I’ve had a second reason for saying:
to this venture.
I kind of hate to say it, Lawrence, but it’s not me: It’s you.
You see, the The Force Awakens did something to me that even The Star Wars Holiday Special, painfully delivered prequel lines about sand, and the very existence of Jar Jar Binks couldn’t do: The Force Awakens made me regret that Star Wars is still a thing.
It made me regret that children were being introduced to something that used to be innocent and good-hearted by a film that shows that the end game of youthful heroism is failure and running away (and that Han should have stuck to his initial demand of $10,000 all in advance in A New Hope).
It made me angry that nobody among the-powers-that-be looked at it, took a deep breath and said “wait a minute. In shadow-rebooting A New Hope, do we really need to make two of the biggest characters in film history pathetic runaway losers and the other a heartless automaton who would kill her son on (not a)Death Star unless hapless sucker Han showed up to do her bidding and die trying to bring him home…even though that request made not a lick of sense given that the Force-sensitive parent who could actually have had an influence was the bidding mother would have just blown Kylo clear out of the sky had Han not shown up to (1) solve her problem by getting yet another (not a)Death Star shield down and (2) die?“
It made me rue how far we’ve fallen as a critical thinkers when we can be hoodwinked so easily that we spend a couple of billion at the movie theatre on a film that’s dressed up to look and feel like Star Wars, but is utterly life- and hope-denying at its core and presents a kind of nihilism that we’d probably reject as an audience if the words STAR WARS weren’t plastered on it.
Oh, also, the story doesn’t really make any sense.
As you can see, eighteen months later, I can still get a bit aggrieved by all this. However, to quote one of the most egregiously jaw-dropping placeholder lines in The Force Awakens, that is “a story for another day.” (Sorry, Lawrence and JJ, but in a past life, which I call the late 1990s, I went to film school and put in my time in the screenwriting trenches as well. You know and I know that line right there would have gotten you laughed out of an on-line screenwriting class at an unaccredited diploma mill.)
The story for today is that I’m not really keen on the idea of you touching the character of Han Solo again, both because of TFA and because of whatever happened to upend the Solo standalone’s directors. The weight of the evidence coming from the usual suspects (aka unnamed sources) is that the disagreements over the tone of the film and the character of Solo became so vast that somebody had to go. Lord/Miller, as I’ve read in the millions of lines of digital type about this and to which I’m now adding, saw the film and the character as funny, while you insisted that Solo was not funny, but was selfish and sarcastic. Other descriptors of Solo that have been thrown around and attributed to you re: Solo are “narcissistic,” “uncaring,” “out for himself,” and “mean.”
Oh, and you’ve also been quoted as saying you “love Han Solo.”
And therein lies the problem.
Now no one wants a Han Solo movie…hm. I could just stop there for a lot of the fandom, but I’ll proceed.
No one wants a Han Solo movie in which Solo keeps trying to get Chewie to pull his finger, but I’d like to propose, Larry, that perhaps Lord/Miller weren’t the only problem here, because it seems that you actually don’t love the same character that the audience loved in the Original Trilogy. You love the darker version of the character that was tossed around in story conferences and in early drafts and you love the darker story that Lucas toyed with, but decided against using (thank the Makers) in Return of the Jedi. You love the Han Solo that Lucas and Leigh Brackett introduced as the “before” Han at the beginning of A New Hope, but not the “after” he became by the end of that film and the “after-after” he became by the end of ROTJ. Now that Lucas and his lighter view of the Star Wars universe are no longer on the scene, it feels like you’re trying to retcon Han Solo to win a battle you fought and lost long ago and in the process create a smuggler whose heart isn’t actually made of gold anymore.
I know that’s not a very nice thing for me to say, but I can’t help but say it, given how you and JJ had your way with the character in TFA, because he certainly wasn’t the character we left at the end of ROTJ. Nor, I should note, is he the character that we met in Bloodline, the Disney/Lucasfilm novel released after TFA and set five years before it, in which Han and Leia are still happily married and Han is pretty much an identifiable older version of ROTJ Han. TFA Han was an awkward mash-up of a script portraying an aged version of the character we met at the beginning of A New Hope and an actor playing hard against the script to show us a broken man wandering the galaxy and trying to make it work.
That impetus — to remake a beloved hero in a less heroic image — is kind of ugly in any context, despite all the folks who will insist “BUT IT’S REAL” as if real had anything to do with a franchise that for forty years has appealed to the little, innocent part of us that still wants to believe in Santa. It’s particularly a problem when applied to the character of Solo and the role that character plays for Star Wars.
Solo’s not the kid who, twenty minutes into the Original Trilogy, decides he wants to be a Jedi and spends the next five hours and forty minutes of film becoming just that. He’s not the character with royal roots who has been fighting for the good guys since before the first film started and continues to do so until the trilogies end.
He’s the character who has to find his better angels, who has to change in order to become the hero/man/boyfriend/partner/friend he decides he wants to be. He’s a guy who has to overcome his natural instincts for self-preservation. He needs to learn to say “I’m sorry.” He’s snarky, FUNNY, and sometimes grudgingly follows the conscience he’d rather not have in order to do the right thing. He’s not always really convinced about the whole “religion” thing, he’s had some rough times, he’s done some rotten things, and he likes money.
It’s no big mystery why Solo is a fan favorite. It’s Harrison Ford, yes, but its also because Solo is as much like all of us as someone can be in a universe with hyperdrives, lightsabers, and Wookiees. He gives the Star Wars universe some identifiable grounding — and HUMOR. (If you don’t believe me, see: prequels.)
And by the end of Return of the Jedi, Solo became the person we’d all like to believe we are or can be— the one whose better angels have won out and given him a real shot at a happily ever after.
Oh, right, that didn’t happen. Well, it did for 30 plus years, and then it didn’t. Thanks, Larry. Always good to remind myself of Han Solo’s utterly pointless death scene in TFA, a death that many of us steeled ourselves against because we were pretty sure it was coming. It was gutting, though, not because it happened, but because it came at the top of act three of a film that had already stripped the character of his OT arc and also because the death was utterly devoid of heroic meaning or salvific result, given that all it did in the context of the film was turn Darth Emo into Darth Lyle Menendez and make Leia sit down and look somewhat upset.
But it can’t just be a pointlessly sad death of a character who, for all the talking up JJ did about cool rogue Han Solo, wasn’t played that way and didn’t come off that way, right? We all know that when you take down an iconic character like that, you do it with the endgame all planned out. You know exactly how that death — of a parent who rouses himself from his brokenness and ennui to risk his life for son he believes is likely already beyond his reach because the woman he loves has asked him to — will reverberate across the sequel trilogy and, ultimately, we’ll see that Solo’s final act WAS heroic. In fact, it was Kenobi-like. Aslan-like. Christ-like. You gave Solo the ultimate 180-degree arc, didn’t you? He died to save his kid, he died so everybody else could live, and you know it, right, Larry? You’ve got this whole thing mapped out, right, bud? I mean, c’mon, you love Han Solo, so you wouldn’t strip the character of his growth, throw him down an endless shaft (holy cow, dude, you literally shafted him!), and walk away to write another movie about him NOT being a hero, would you?
Oh.
Maybe you did.
So…you’re telling me that it’s possible Han’s final act was utterly futile, solely a device to tell us Darth Emo is really, really evil ? I think we already knew that, given the platypus mask, Vader lust, and the blowing up of a solar system. But, hey, thanks for getting people in our already messed-up world to argue that patricide can be justified; what’s been missing from our pop culture crap stew for the last decade is Star Wars fans arguing that the vastly immoral may be moral because they identify with the patricidal emo character whom they want to end up with the Mary Sue whose mind he attacked in the TFA version of a rape scene. I’ll never know how you avoided feminist outrage there, but count your lucky stars that feminists were so happy to have a female (not)Luke Skywalker in Star Wars that they overlooked that.
So now you move onto the Han Solo film, wherein, after meeting loser, regressed, lost, runaway and dead Han in TFA, we’re going to meet selfish, sarcastic, mean, narcissistic, and out for himself but not funny Han.
Can’t wait. By which I mean I could have happily waited forever, because I wasn’t waiting. I WASN’T WAITING, LARRY.
I get it, though. I’ve seen most of your work. You’re a serious filmmaker — you went from Larry to Lawrence. The Big Chill, Grand Canyon, Accidental Tourist, Mumford. I’ve seen ’em all. God help me, I even saw Dreamcatcher…but that’s a story for another day. What I know from those films is that when you’re calling the shots, nothing is black and white. Everything is a shade of gray.
What I also know is that those films are not made for the part of us that still wants to believe in Santa and that gray is not a good color for Star Wars. Star Wars became the cultural touchstone it is precisely because it jumped into a very gray period in our history, with gas lines and Soviets and malaise, with a black-and-white, good versus evil morality that made everyone just a little bit happier when they left the theatre. You didn’t question if the heroes were heroes or the villains were villains. In its own goofball way, Star Wars — with its complete faith in the power of hope — was countercultural.
Now? The new Star Wars took one look around at our current culture and instead of being countercultural, happily jumped right into the morass and is swimming around in the sludge of relativism. Heroes become failures and run away. Evil characters are given some sort of justification for being evil. Rebels fighting against the Empire are portrayed as assassins instead of people fighting a monstrous evil. The Resistance is some kind of non-governmental paramilitary group. Luke Skywalker thinks the Jedi must end. Oh, and the last two films you’ve written focus on a less noble version of the character you claim to love.
Star Wars is starting to look like a reflection of the worst of us as adults and as a society, instead of a goofy, lovable, out-of-this-galaxy inspiration to kids (and the kid in everyone) to be the best version of themselves.
Hey, I’m sure everyone at Lucasfilm is just fine with this, because these films, despite their shaky worldview, are also printing money, but, Larry, consider that maybe Wonder Woman has proven that there’s still a huge audience for naivete, goodness, and hope. Since you now have Ron Howard, who’s specialized in empathetic leads even in complex films over the years, can you maybe jettison the gray and try to create just one more time not the Han Solo that you love, but the Han Solo that is a combination of you, George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Harrison Ford, and Leigh Brackett?
That’s the Han — the funny, snarky, constantly-irked one who talked a good game about being out for himself but somehow never was when the chips were down — that the audience has loved for forty years, because, in the end, CS Lewis was as right about this as he was about most things:
Oh, and if you could de-age Harrison Ford so he could play the role, that’d be great too…kthxbai.
Best,
Annie

truth or dare; kai eastaughffe
The night already peaked by the time Kai’s turn was up. He had come down off the high off the lip sync battle---gracefully conceeded to Samuel, on the basis that one man sacrificing his dignity to Avril Lavigne should logically outweigh what essentially became a group dance-off with Lady Marmalade, and the excellence of that was in no way Kai’s doing---and he was slumped on the floor half-wasted already by the time he was poked in the ribs and forced back to attention.
He wasn’t looking forward to whatever people had planned for him. There’d already been a few curve balls, and he was, frankly, really worried about Salem, and Cleo. But, he couldn’t very well refuse after making most of the squad do whatever had popped into his head.
from cleo raja —
truth: what’s one thing you would change about everyone here?
dare: consume everything in the minibar, alcohol aside, in five minutes.
He could not afford the contents of the minibar at this point, even not including the alcohol. Nor did he want to.
“Simple. We’d all have colour-coded or elemental or animal super powers, à la Power Rangers, or Sailor Moon.” He shrugged.
“We have never been, nor can we ever be, a proper friend group, since we don’t have a transformation sequence.” He downed the rest of his drink. Tonight was the first night he was really letting himself consume as much alcohol as he wanted---it seemed fitting. Then he continued, before anyone else could take over.
“See, Salem would be something dark and edgy like a black motif with ice and a panther, Leigh would be like a sassy lion and the colour orange. Danny would be yellow and something that flies, an eagle? TJ would be green with like, an alligator or a snake, Cleo would be red and maybe a badass scorpion or spider or a biker thing going on. Jenny might also be red---I feel like you’d rock the pink outfit, though, and maybe have some secret like you can control time and are the most powerful of us and no one knows it. Skylar would be purple and wind powers, something pretty like a butterfly but like---deceptive, her wingbeats make hurricanes, I dunno. Sam’d be blue, cause it’s like “leader-y”, but he’d have like... sweet water powers or maybe a wolf thing going on... I dunno. Dakota would be white, and his power would be...” Here he blanked. “To perfectly slice a bagel, or he’d turn into an airplane? I don’t know what your deal is these days, I dunno who you are, dude. Jules would be gold and control the sun, probably. Kelley would be silver---not because she’s second best though, silver ‘cause she’d turn into like a thousand knives, or just a fuckin’ tank.”
“And I’d be the, uhhh... Turquoise Ranger. There’s never a Turquoise anything. But it’s cool, ‘cause I’d also have a sloth patronus or whatever, and you guys would still have to bring me along anyway.” He folded his hands and surveyed the circle seriously.
“The defense rests.” Lawyer-talk, bonus points. He mimed sinking a basketball, for good measure.

truth: who do you dislike most out of all of us?
dare: arm wrestle me.
It only took one glance at Kota’s arms before Kai scoffed. “Yeah, right. That’s happening---real suspense in who’d win, you clearly just want to look good. I’ll take truth... Who I dislike most...” He thought about it for a heartbeat, squinting around at the assembled group. Sure, there were some there he could take or leave, but no one he truly, deeply disliked more than... “Myself, obviously. Not that you’re not all terrible in your own special ways.”
There was a deafening silence, and he glanced around. “What? Too edgy? It’s called a truth for a reason---” Someone helpfully pointed out that answering yourself was against the rules, and he grew slightly more irritated with all of them. But only for a second. “Fuck you guys, let me be the emo one for once.” He sighed. “Whatever, let’s just... give the people what they want.” He rolled up his right sleeve, and leaned forward to plant his arm in the middle of the circle before flashing Dakota a wide smile and saying, “Bring it, Beardface. And I mean it---you throw this out of pity or something and I will destroy you some other way when you least expect it.”

truth: what was the cause of your weirdest boner?
dare: put five ice cubes down your pants and leave them there.
“Saying no to the ice dick, thanks, darlin’.” It was a little hard to look at her longer than a second without remembering what she’d said about his eyes and... all that. He still hadn’t quite recovered from the stuff people had said on their turns. Skylar thinking he had a good personality was... misguided, but okay... Salem’s was intentionally weird (as he’d requested, so that one was probably on him.) But Jenny’s confession had taken him utterly by surprise and he still wasn’t sure whether she’d been entirely serious, or if she’d had some other reason for praising him.
He cleared his throat. “Weirdest boner? Mr. Fuller’s math class, apropos of trigonometry. Isosceles triangles just do it for me, I guess. Or, it was the hell that is puberty, and a light breeze could have the same effect, so.” He was answering a lot of truths, it turned out. Whether that would grow uncomfortable in the near future, he wasn’t sure, but at least for once it was a game of embarrassment for everyone, not just him.

truth: who in the room has hurt your feelings the most, and how?
dare: do your best impression of three people in the room - really commit to it.
Well, he knew he wasn’t gonna touch that truth with a ten foot pole. He’s not certain who he’d answer, anyway. Most of the incidents kind of blurred together, and the ones that really stung weren’t things he was willing to admit under any kind of torture. Which left him eyeing the other individuals for targets.
Of course, the more sensible thing would be to separate the impressions. But once he’d settled on them, a scene was already forming in his mind---and they had a brief stint taking Drama in high school to thank for that, he figured. “Alright, but I need props...” With an effort, he pushed himself up, then travelled around the room collecting what would be most effective---a pair of oversized sunglasses, a phone, a scarf, a pair of big headphones from his own bag tossed in the corner, and... yeah, that’d work.
He then proceeded to enact a familiar situation to all of them, Jenny and Salem being catty at each other---sunglasses perched artfully on a dismissive smirk when it was her lines, scarf draped around his neck lazily for pretentiousness rather than representing any particular habit of Salem’s, but it worked, and Cleo in the headphones, snapping peevishly at the others as she looked at her phone at intervals.
By the end of five minutes his brain was stretched to capacity, he’d nearly strangled himself twice in headphone cords and the scarf, and the sunglasses were haphazardly pushed into his hair. “...in conclusion, you’re petty assholes who need to handle your issues better, and I don’t know why I love you,” he finished, breathlessly, before collapsing backwards on the floor.
from salem st. ives —
truth: did you cheat to get through law school?
dare: spend the rest of the game blind folded and wear ear plugs under headphones turned full blast (so that any other dares can get done to him and he’ll have no idea who did it).
He wrinkled his nose at the dare. “I would have to be horribly masochistic to be into that, I hope you know that. And I’m only like... maybe lightly masochistic most days, so you’ll just have to be treated to my full presence for the rest of the game.” It was hard to sweep a mocking bow while seated, but he tried to give one to Salem with minimal spillage of his drink.
“And I...” He paused, and covered it by sipping at the medley of alcohol in his cup---was it his? Had he just picked it up? It tasted like sour patch kids, and he was fairly sure he’d had something in the brownish family. “Is this someone else’s drink?” he asked, keeping the suspicion that maybe he was being pranked---extra bonus prank on Kai night, you know---a private one. “Anyway, it’s delicious, so thanks.” The potential prankster could have their laugh, his drink was delightful. “As I was saying, I did not cheat in law school.” It was, he told himself, the absolute truth. He’d never even been in law school---so how could he cheat? His smirk lost some of its pep when he remembered why that wasn’t exactly the triumph it should be. Someone, somewhere, had actually been in law school and not cheated---but it sure as hell wasn’t him. His mouth tasted bitter, and the stolen drink didn’t help any.
from samuel flores —
truth: do you still resent how the squad treated you in high school?
dare: prank call one of your coworkers.
And there it was. The kicker. ‘Cause he didn’t have coworkers to call---unless you counted Jeremy and Yolanda from the sandwich shop. Who would not take kindly to being disturbed---high priced lawyers might shrug that shit off as a laugh. Minimum wage dishwashers, or his manager, would not. And, believe it or not, he actually liked his coworkers. They thought he was good at his job---and he was, obviously, but they treated him like he was. He wasn’t going to subject them to the... Recapturing Lost Youth Squad. Yolanda had three kids, for fuck’s sake.
He swallowed the remains of his cup and studied the bottom. “I wouldn’t say I resent it,” he said, surprisingly calm and serious for the moment. “That makes it seem like I’m out for vengeance on everyone or hate you all. I don’t, at all. I just want... I dunno.” His voice dropped to a mumble. “Respect, maybe? Or... something...” And now, because of his stupid choice to pretend to be something he wasn’t, some of them actually did respect him, but it wasn’t even him, not really. They respected a complete and total fabrication. He’d almost gotten what he wanted, but it felt hollow and fake.
from skylar murphy —
truth: when was the closest you came to truly getting upset with the squad’s jokes on your behalf?
dare: spread a rumor about someone in the squad that really grinds your gears (i.e. whoever pokes fun at you too much from your perspective).
“Uhhh...” He tried to think, this time, of something specific. After a minute, he nodded. “I do remember one time...” Which in hindsight, might’ve been a precursor to things to come, but he hadn’t been too wise about that sort of thing until he started actively looking for them at his therapist’s bidding. “After we saw the Arcade Fire concert in junior year, and everyone had bought merch. Remember, it was like, a status thing? Wearing the shirts the next day if you’d been to the show? Teenagers are trash.”
“Anyway, they were actually pretty tame as jokes go, just about the shirt and how I had finally made a decent fashion choice, combined with like... the occasional jab about how now I looked like all the other indie pricks at school.” It really had been totally run-of-the-mill day, all things told---except he’d actually loved that shirt, and the concert had been a good memory. And it’d only lasted a day, because of their idiotic taunts, and his skin being surprisingly thin that week. “Went home and burned the thing in the fireplace. Of course, our fireplace wasn’t equipped for synthetics or whatever was on the logo, I dunno... Anyway the house filled up with smoke and I had to evacuate the munchkins to the lawn,” he said, referring to his siblings. “And got in complete shit for it. Never told any of you, but I think that’s the most pissed I ever got.”
from tj powell —
truth: do you like leigh or salem better?
dare: run out into the hall, knock on somebody’s door, and ask to use their bathroom.
He toyed with his lower lip, looking directly at the dimly-aware Salem as he tried to decide. It should be an easy answer, but his drink had been spiked after all---with indecision and philosophizing, apparently, because it occurred to him that for all his resentment of Leigh becoming joined at the hip with Salem instead, there was something that wasn’t quite... It wasn’t jealousy, really, because he also liked Salem. Genuinely. If he’d been in her shoes, he’d have opted to hang out with Salem, too. So he didn’t really blame her, and that’s what made it complicated. Leigh was his oldest friend, probably. They understood each other, and she’d never cut him out---when she could have. They became a trio instead. He eventually realized he’d been silently musing and staring at Salem for quite some time, and shrugged. “Fuck it.” He got shakily to his feet and went out into the hall, made a show of being choosy about which hotel door he was going to disturb before selecting one at random and knocking.
And then knocking at another when the first didn’t answer. Finally, the door was jerked open. A tall man with a handlebar moustache to rival most cowboy movies loomed over him from the doorway. “What do you want.” He snapped.
Kai blinked. “Uh, I---I lost my room key---can I use your bathroom?”
The man stared at him---then down the hall, where he no doubt saw the heads of several onlookers. “No.”
The door slammed inches from Kai’s nose and blew his hair back with the force of it. He was happy to retreat with his indignity and the thought of ‘I’m twenty eight fucking years old, what am I doing’ echoing shamefully in his head, until he realized he had an ace up his sleeve---or on his hand, rather. He grinned down the hall at his friends, took the bandage off his right palm from the failed blood oath with Cleo, and knocked again.
The door opened. “Fuck off---”
“Please,” he implored, clutching his bloody hand. “I just need to wash off the blood, and then I’ll go...”
The man’s eyes widened. “Shit! Yeah, come on---I know first aid. How’d you manage that, son?”
Kai followed, face serious. Ten minutes later he came back to the room, freshly bandaged and more or less triumphant.

Oh hey, long time no replies. And these are the first ones of this year. I have a hard time replying now. It’s not like I don’t have time - I’m doing okay, actually. I mean, I wouldn’t complain if there was less homework, but still. Free time exists. It’s just that I can’t bring myself to replying to either comments or messages...I replied to asks quite quickly though, which is something unusual for me. Usually that’s where I’m slowest. I don’t know, is this another weird anxiety thing? Like I know I can reply, but I just...don’t?
Anyway...let’s get that done now I guess. There’s a lot of these, apologies if something got lost. Maybe it’s my fault, maybe it’s not, all I know is that sometimes my activity feed doesn’t show me everything.

ghkjahfljhk lately (I mean for the past few months) I’ve been really disliking Miracle and Adam’s storyline but for some reason when people mention it, they always say they liked it, so I guess I didn’t do that bad of a job?
Same with the good old Zoey storyline. Everyone who has ever talked to me about it said they liked it and thought it was interesting, but I’m over here like “gjkfjgfjhg don’t mention that mess to me ever again”.

I think I played sims too this year. Well, first we played some board games with my parents, then there was midnight, I cried, went to see the fireworks (while finishing a bottle of wine but I swear I wasn’t drunk)...oooh and then I watched a stream and edited my sims screenshots! Okay so I didn’t actually play but I edited the pics and like...these are still fun new year’s eve plans, am I right?

I like Sunset’s style especially. Well, sometimes she wears clothes I wouldn’t, but for most of the time, it’s just comfy fun stuff I wish I had. Especially considering my dark phase is over and colours are slowly coming back to my closet :D
melien replied to your post “I have some random sims I could share. Anyone interested?”
Ohhhh... on one hand I'd always want sims from you but on the other hand I fear I won't do them justice because idk where to use them rn. Dilemma

I’m always down for creating sims for mutuals and friends (I just never talk about it), so just let me know when you want one. Also, I’m sure you would do them justice. I’m really not afraid you would fail there. You know I love everything you do, so... :D

I’d say this is something similar. I don’t want to say anything about Ross is iconic, but...you get my point, right?
jackssims replied to your photoset “Ross: “Okay, I don’t like this. I have a theory.” Caleb: “I know what...”
👀
The funny thing here is, when I was writing this dialogue, I had no idea what was going to happen later.
jackssims replied to your photoset “Caleb: “I don’t…I don’t ever want this to end.” Ross: “You’re the only...”
Way to dodge that, Caleb
Oh yeah. He’s good at that
unstablesims replied to your photoset “Sunset: I know I said I’d work out today but I really don’t want to…oh...”
mood
An everyday one
alfalfalegacy replied to your photo “Sim Download: Cara Meadows she/her, bisexual Another one. I imagine...”
ahh she's cute! might have to nab her for my private save ;)
Yay, I’m so happy to hear that! :D
jackssims replied to your photoset “Everything about this picture is a big mood. You may tag yourself now.”
Tbh I’m both Caleb and Sunset
Relatable
tiny-tany-thaanos replied to your photoset “Valentine: “Relationships and love aren’t really for me, but attending...”
Ironically her name is ValentineXD
Yup. Exactly. I bet it must be annoying for a person who couldn’t care less about getting into a relationship.
myopiccc replied to your photoset “Sunset wasn’t born to follow the crowd.”
Seriously!?!? I would never know THEY can use an umbrellas clever way! LOL
Lol they sometimes open it inside. Doesn’t seem clever to me :D But yeah, I didn’t expect them to sit down like this.
solarmoodlet replied to your photo “Sim Download: Enric Noel he/him, gay Sometimes a miracle happens and I...”
hes so cute. added him to my save. Tyvm!
Ahhh thank youuu!
tiny-tany-thaanos replied to your post “Simblr 2019 Goals”
I join you with the last point I kinda defeated social anxiety irl but the online anxiety stays. And they say shy people can communicate better online!
melien replied to your post “Simblr 2019 Goals”
I third the online anxiety, glad to know I'm not alone
I wish I could say I defeated it irl as well...things got better (mainly because I just had to get used to it and grow a thicker skin) but I’m still an anxious trainwreck 99 % of the time :D It’s the same online.
Also, instead of actually starting a conversation with people, I’m always like “oh you know, if you feel like talking to me, just send me a message, I don’t bite” but the problem is I know there’s a lot of us like that here and I’m not the only one with this fear of communication so maybe I should be the one to find the courage once
Wow that didn’t make sense but I think that only proves my point that I’m an anxious trainwreck :D
penelope-and-wonders replied to your photoset “You can put the umbrellas away, guys.”
What fun would that be?
Oh right, I can’t have a normal wedding :D It’s a universal rule that I should finally accept. Something would be wrong if everything went right for once.
tiny-tany-thaanos replied to your photo “Sim Download: Leigh Smith she/her, pansexual A long long time ago I...”
Omg, I looove her! ❤️❤️
Thank youuu ♥
green-productivitea replied to your photoset “Sunset: “What can I say? Freaking finally. Took you long enough to...”
The fact that she call him dad :O
Yep, she did. I love the relationship these two have.
yamekamerainbows27 replied to your photoset “Sunset: “You’re the woman that said she didn’t want a child, and you...”
Damn Sunset! You tell her girl
melien replied to your photoset “Sunset: “You’re the woman that said she didn’t want a child, and you...”
Go Sunset!
That’s what she deserves
sparkiemonkey replied to your photoset “I mean, Sunset was right. Dawn is adorable.”
she is totally adorable
Up until now I was always saying that this legacy has some Good Genes, now with Dawn it will be more like Cute Genes.
unstablesims replied to your photoset “Marcella: “What are you two doing?” Sunset: “Watching the clouds!...”
let them be dorks in peace!! lmao
Exactly!! No reasons to judge
cafeheart replied to your photoset “I would lie if I said I saw this coming.”
yknow if someone didnt have context for your legacy this kinda looks like caleb is murdering ross asdkfbbd
omg you’re right and I hate that you are right
vampcatsims replied to your photoset “Ross: “We’ve taken many risks already and now I’m taking another one,...”
noooo he's going to leave him at the altar god this is going to hurt so much
omg wow this is where scrolling down and reading new ones before old ones causes reaction mistakes cuz omg this is for realsies isn't it?
kyveria replied to your photoset “Ross: “We’ve taken many risks already and now I’m taking another one,...”
@vampcatsims don’t worry, ross has already had someone leave him at the altar so Caleb is going to stay ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Haha yeah, they’re going to be fine. I think. Can’t promise anything.
jackssims replied to your photoset “Caleb: “I…how can I say no to this? Yes, Ross. Yes, I will.” Ross:...”
Good! I was scared he was going to say no for a second
Imagine if he left him and I’d introduce a new spouse now. Or bring back Jordan. Or Marika.
Omg imagine I’d bring her back and she’d get her “happy little family” she claims she wishes for now.
myopiccc replied to your post “ - fave types of movies?”
Such a tense era! I'm a historic nerd too:)
Yeah, I love it! I mean, I don’t actually love it, there were some bad things happening, no freedom of speech and such, but for me, it’s an interesting era to learn about. I also think it’s important to know about these times because in a way, they’re still so similar to where we are now, we really should look back at them and try to not make the same mistakes...sadly, when I look at the situation in my country...sometimes it feels like people forget. Not just people like me who didn’t experience it and have only learned about it in History classes...feels like even people who have been there forget and it’s sad and frustrating and I wish I could do something about it. Okay rant over.
jackssims replied to your photoset “Caleb: “Tell me honestly. Did you expect me to change my mind with...”
Nice! But I swear if this somehow backfires and Ross ends up dying...
👀
dandylion240 replied to your photoset “This doesn’t even need a caption.”
Ross you better not have died!!
jackssims replied to your photoset “This doesn’t even need a caption.”
/ROSS/
ajkfaglafkghlahgfk I didn’t realize this would seem like he’s dying I’m sorry for causing panic fjaklflk
I just thought it was funny he set himself on fire and Caleb is over there like “nooo I agreed to marry this freak I have made a grave mistake”
princessdejamars replied to your photoset “Ummmm”
oh no not again
Yes. Yes again. And yeah, I could’ve left without saving. I didn’t. I was shocked when it happened and once I realized he’s pregnant again...you should’ve heard my hysterical laughter. Something is wrong with me and I don’t like it.
cafeheart replied to your photoset “Dawn: “Not a chance.”
sunset looks scared shitless asdkfjdbdb
"fhlakhfalklahkjjkij she’s kissing me I wasn’t prepared for this what do I do jgljfkjhlaafkgl”
jackssims replied to your photoset “Caleb: Nothing happened…I’m fine…I’m just gonna give this dog a bath...”
That's totally not going to lead to more problems later, Caleb, if anything *did* happen (/sarcasm)
Yup. It’s totally okay to do that.
jackssims replied to your photoset “oh shit”
Oh fuck
alfalfalegacy replied to your photoset “oh shit”
wow
this is wild haha
Basically my reaction
jackssims replied to your photoset “Stella: “Dad, you’re home alone?” Caleb: “I think so.” Stella: “Aw,...”
jlkfdzsjlkfadg She's pregnant, he's pregnant, truly amazing
ikr
That’s a twist I truly didn’t expect at the end of this generation. Not that I’m complaining
jackssims replied to your photoset “Stella: “Anything else?” Caleb: “What? Is there supposed to be...”
/Caleb/
jackssims replied to your photoset “Caleb: “And that’s not all…” Ross: “Huh?” Caleb: “Nothing. Forget it.”
//Caleb//
See Ross and Caleb were made for each other because they both have a hard time learning from their mistakes lol
dandylion240 replied to your post “I WAS HOPING HE WAS PREGNANT WITH HIS FIANCE'S BABY NOT GETTING...”
There's a way to bend the rules. Since Ross will become a vampire. He and Caleb have forever to have a child together. So once Sunset takes over as heir I say anything goes for Ross after that but that's just me lol
Ooh, technically that could work! I didn’t even think about that. Good point. I don’t think they’ll have children together but I really do like this idea.
jackssims replied to your photoset “Ross: “Is there anything you would like to tell me?” Caleb: “I was...”
Good! Caleb got the courage to tell Ross
I mean he didn’t really have another option at this point
jackssims replied to your photoset “Caleb: “You’re not going to leave me now, are you?” Ross: “I’m...”
Wholesome Ross (he’s really come full circle tbh)
I kept saying he would get better and no one believed me. There you have it guys, he’s a changed person. Character development! :D
simtress replied to your photo “™¥ ♥”
*eeps! she's too cute1
ikr, I miss her ;-;
melien replied to your photoset “Stella: I can’t believe it’s actually raining on my wedding day. We...”
It's a free riiiiide when you've already paid
Is this a reference I am supposed to get
Because I’m dumb and don’t get it lmao
melien replied to your photoset “Sunset: “Say cheese hair!”
So don't ask how I remember it because I'm probably too invested lol but your theme with red hair/blonde(yellow) hair in gen 3 of every legacy? It continues
Omg I didn’t even realize! Sebastian and Lynn started it obviously, then in my Raven Legacy it was a little “easter egg” but this time, it’s a coincidence (a nice coincidence). I guess I just can’t have too many redheads!
melien replied to your photoset “oh shit”
The ultimate plot twist
The plot twist I normally would’ve welcomed but this time, I actually felt sorry for him. He didn’t deserve it the first time (aka the time I was petty and did it on purpose) and he didn’t deserve it this time either. But still. Aliens. I can’t just quit the game without saving when it has to do something with them, can I?
melien replied to your post “I WAS HOPING HE WAS PREGNANT WITH HIS FIANCE'S BABY NOT GETTING...”
Maybe babies for them perhaps?
Y’all really want them to have kids huh
melien replied to your photoset “Nooooo Rocket :( He’s old now!”
Can Caleb also turn Rocket? Vampire doggo would be fun
Man I’d love if that was possible (even though...I just imagined him biting the poor dog and that’s kinda weird). Buuuut...there’s something else that I did and it’s almost as good.
tiny-tany-thaanos replied to your photo “Sim Download: Minako Ito she/her, lesbian Traits: Good, Loner,...”
All of the Sims you put for download are so pretty! I'm grabbing them all!
Thank you so much ;-;
tiny-tany-thaanos replied to your photo “i was enchanted to meet you”
Aaahh nostalgia!
I knoooow ;-; I love them and I miss them and I want to play with them again
I mean I could, first I’d just have to finish the high school story and that’s...highly unlikely lol
tiny-tany-thaanos replied to your photoset “oh shit”
Aliens are in love with him that's true
New otp: Caleb/Aliens. Oh that's weird
They have a weird thing for Calebs
If you guys know a Caleb irl protect them
If you are a Caleb, well...I’m sorry
tiny-tany-thaanos replied to your photoset “Rocket: Hey I’m old, just thought you should know…oh nevermind what...”
This is somehow sad=((
Yeah. I love this little dog so much :(

Okay now it's been a few hours and im back from my walk so heres some very scattered Thots on the tgt/soc tv series news
Fact 1: The show's proposed to cover both TGT and SOC
Fact 2: TGT takes place before SOC
Fact 3: (at least from what ive seen) SOC has a bigger fanbase than TGT
So uh with the caveat that I have faith in Leigh and the showrunners, and that leigh said she'd be releasing a little more info either tonight or tomorrow (and im very happy to take this all back) - im kind of confused as to how this'll be approached? The logical thing to do would be to have the first four or so episodes dedicated to TGT and the rest to SOC but
-All the hype ive seen so far on social media has been exclusively for the SOC half of things and it'll really suck if we just kind of... ditched the TGT part. Because while it's a good series imo it's nowhere near SOC, and it's really easy to pass over it as Yet Another YA Fantasy (u should still read it tho). If we have TGT and SOC together we have to have TGT come first because it would make no sense to a) have it come after or b) have a series of TGT flashbacks in SOC because:
-Both series stand just fine on their own so it'd make zero sense to combine them beyond just having two separate stories. And I don't think you should have two separate stories in one season? The series are so different from each other. Ones 'I want to do my best and save my country' and the others 'MONEY BABEY' so... do you want two very different stories back-to-back? I cant help but think it'll be confusing at best for viewers who haven't read the books.
On top of that, there's very little overlap between the series. iirc they don't share any geographical locations (though they do mention them) and while they both share grisha, it's the main focus of one and pretty minor in the other. The characters that show up in both series only come towards the end of CK so it's hardly enough to justify pulling the rest of the books together.
Now all that being said, Leighs an executive producer and shes said before that she'd rather an adaptation didnt exist at all if it would have a whitewashed inej and jesper so im not concerned about the diversity side of things (I believe she's also said that Nina is 100% chubby and shes not changing that) and there's no reason to think this won't extend to TGT.
And given that we don't know anything about what'll happen so far ill be glad to sit back and see where it goes and will be so so happy if I can take all this back or they make it work.
Now you know what im REALLY worried about. Going for a grimdark version of the Barrel instead of their tacky fashion choices + emo kid Kaz sticking out like a sore thumb.
So my final take is: boi im pumped but a little scared but I have faith
#and thats my very unorganised take#whoch boils down to god i hope they do it well though#six of crows#the grisha trilogy#leigh bardugo
