Vectis
WWF Gray Wolf by Build-A-Bear (2009)
Bought from a charity shop in Newport, Isle of Wight, UK in 2024
Origin story time!!!
Vectis was a super lucky thrift find I picked up while on honeymoon with my wife. We don't have Build-A-Bear in Finland and while I guess it's not totally impossible to find a wild BAB that's lowkey on your wantlist here, it's impossible enough that I kind of thought I'd never own him (without paying all the extra expenses of an online purchase). But lo and behold, there he laid on top of a plush pile in the corner of a charity shop while we where on IOW! And he cost only £1.20!!! He even had all his tags, though the hanging one is worn out (I kept it obviously).
I visited the Westminster Bridge BAB workshop before I left home and bought him a tweed cap and a matching coat.
I named him Vectis after the Latin name of Isle of Wight. I love my wife, we had a great honeymoon and I also love Isle of Wight so it's cool I have this sweet lad as a keepsake!

(CW // Dec 18th, suicide, victims of harassment, violence, mental health talk)
Since I want to spread this hashtag more, I would like to talk about the Shawols that I lost over the years and bring their voices up.
Clem was a friend I met on Wattpad back in 2015 when I was 11 and she was 14. She was one of the closest and the first online friend I’ve ever had. She loved to make SHINee stories for fun and she also helped me to write better. She was an amazing writer who took great passion for her work as well as her being a big advocate for the LGBTQ+ community according to her sister who came out as lesbian a year before we met.
Unfortunately, Clem was bullied at her college and her workplace, including on her online accounts. This would occur about 1-2 month after the death has been announced. On the 15th of December 2018, 3 days after Jonghyun’s first anniversary, she couldn’t take it anymore and took her own life. She was 17.
Sam was a girl in the secondary school who was 2 years older than me. I remembered talking to her once and that was it. She also really loved Jonghyun and Onew and was a BIG fan of the group.
One day, she stopped coming to class. There was a rumour going around saying that Sam took her own life after being hate bombed for posting about Jonghyun positively to cope with the pain. The last time she was in class, a guy mentioned his passing without warning which triggered the girl to stand up and leave. Ever since then, she was never seen again. The guy thought that it was his fault, but it turned out that she was going through a lot recently and couldn’t take it anymore. If it was true, then she died on the 9th of January 2018 aged 16 years old.
Ayami was a close friend of mine since Year 1. Interesting fact, she was actually born in Japan and then came to the UK when she was only 4. That summer, she enrolled in my school where we met on the first day. She didn’t speak much English, but luckily I knew a bit of Japanese so we were able to have a connection together. She was a sweet girl that would look out of anyone who looked like that needed help. She even loved to cook and wanted to start her own sweet shop one day where she would make sweet treats such as cakes, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, etc. Fun fact, my blog @yutassweetshop is actually based on her childhood dream and yes NCT bias was also Yuta! It’s a sweet (no pun intended) tribute to the one I called noona, and yes I’ll never stop calling her that until the day I die. Never mind, she’ll still be my noona anyways.
Although yes she had been harassed around his passing when we went to school together, there were other stuff in her life that really pulled the trigger on her head. I could make a separate post talking about Ayami and what she had went through so you would know, but to keep it simple, her father did some horrible things to her as a kid that when she found out, she took her own life out of fear. She was 14.
The reason why I mentioned her was the fact that Jonghyun’s passing was one of the chain of events she had to go through in her life, and you never truly know what someone has gone through already. Even though she didn’t die over it, that still doesn’t make it ok regardless. It’s still an awful thing to do to someone who is grieving by acting like they are complete strangers and treating them like they had never once seen the man before.
Those 3 girls didn’t took their lives because they were obsessive fans, they died because they were HARASSED to suicide. I know a friend’s friend who was also a blinger that took her own life and her family thought it was because she was sad over the passing of Jonghyun. That wasn’t what happened. She was beaten up at school and was told to kill herself ever since she came back from the Christmas holidays. She ended up doing so in her room and she was so close to celebrating her 16th birthday. It was the same as Jonghyun’s. She took her own life 2 days before at age 15.
There were some people in my cousins’ lives that killed themselves too, but I don’t know them very much, but all of them will be missed. Any Shawols that I’ve missed, please leave their names below and tell me one thing you loved about them. You can even talk about their favourite song or albums.
This tormenting K-Pop fans thing needs to stop. I don’t care if you think teenage girls screaming about their BTS biases are cringe, this needs to end. It’s not funny anymore and it’s claiming lives. I could of lost my friend that I met last year just because of the dumb messages of them saying that he was disrespecting a “deadman.” It just seems so tone deaf that really, they’re actually doing the disrespecting and not him.
This is already a difficult month for all of us and I just beg, PLEASE DO NOT HARASS ANY SHAWOLS. Not just in this month where it’s his anniversary, but WHOLE FUCKING YEAR. Please treat us like human beings and stop making us change for someone who barely even knows about the guy until the news broke and now you want to be the fucking hero when you’re not.
Why don’t you do all of us a favour and just fuck off. I’m sure most of us would want that now. This is why some Shawols like me haven’t yet stopped grieving because of how badly people treated us over the years. It has been 5 years, instead of telling us to “let him rest in peace”, how about you let us “grief in peace.”
It’s like what they say, “don’t give his family condolences if you aren’t going to respect his fans.”
Never mind, I did.
Rest in peace to Clem, Sam, Ayami and everyone else who took their lives due to these kinds of people either in real life or online. Rest in peace to the main guy himself, Kim Jonghyun. Thank you so much for taking care of those lost souls for us. Trust me, this was never your fault. Don’t ever blame yourself for any of this. Disgusting pricks like them (the people who harasses Shawols) has always existed since the beginning of time.
Please don’t cry because of the Shawols that went your route but be happy since you made their dreams come true.

National Hot Chocolate Day
Made with creamy milk and yummy cocoa, this sugary sweet treat is delicious when enjoyed by itself, or can be a great basic recipe that can then be used to get creative with by adding unique flavors, spices and even liqueurs.
Oh the joy of a cup of steamy hot chocolate on a cold winter day! Hot chocolate provides a delicious and sweet treat that warms the body and the heart.
It’s time to learn more about and celebrate National Hot Chocolate Day!
History of National Hot Chocolate Day
Hot chocolate has a long and delightful history that goes along with the history of the cacao bean. In fact, the first way that chocolate was enjoyed was as a beverage, although quite different from the way people drink hot chocolate today. When cacao beans were first used by ancient people groups, the beans were likely ground coarsely and placed in hot water to create a bitter drink that was used in religious ceremonies.
As chocolate beans and sugar both became more accessible in Europe, the cocoa solids were then used to make chocolate bars and chocolate candies. But a favorite continues to be the warm, sweet milky beverage that is known as hot chocolate!
By 1828, powdered chocolate was made that made it much easier to stir into milk. And when Nesquik was invented in 1948, the first chocolate milk powder made a quick and tasty addition to milk that could also be heated up into hot chocolate.
National Hot Chocolate Day was established to show appreciation for and encourage the celebration of this delicious drink that soothes and comforts the youngest and oldest of souls – and everyone in between!
National Hot Chocolate Day Timeline
1500 BC Earliest traces of cocoa beans
The Olmec, Mayan and Aztec peoples all may have incorporated chocolate drink into their religious ceremonies.
1657 London opens its first chocolate house
Near Bishop’s Gate, a Frenchman opens the first house serving “an excellent West India drink”.
1968 The band ‘Hot Chocolate’ is formed
This band from the UK brings an eclectic mix of reggae, soul, rock and disco over the next several decades.
2004 Starbucks begins serving hot chocolate
Catering to those non-coffee drinkers, the coffee mogul places hot chocolate on their menu.
2004 Polar Express film features hot chocolate
The train taking children to the North Pole serves hot chocolate along with a delightful song.
How to Celebrate National Hot Chocolate Day
Anyone can join in on the fun and celebration of National Hot Chocolate Day, whether keeping it simple or making a big deal out of it! Take a look at some of these fun ways to bring joy and delight in honor of the day:
Enjoy a Cup of Hot Chocolate
Whether using a powdered mix, making it at home from scratch or going out to a coffee shop, the most important task of the day is to drink and enjoy a delicious cup of toasty hot chocolate. The easiest way, of course, is to add a pre-made mix to hot milk, stir it up and drink. Adding marshmallows or whipped cream on top can turn it into an extra delicious treat.
For a more sophisticated hot chocolate drink in honor of National Hot Chocolate Day, try using an online recipe that is often used in many different coffee shops and cafes. Typically, these recipes will include whole milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, bittersweet or semisweet chocolate and vanilla extract. The ingredients are mixed together, cooked on the stove, melted and whisked to a creamy hot chocolate perfection.
Learn the Health Benefits of Hot Chocolate
Although the most popular versions of hot chocolate typically do contain quite a bit in the form of sugars and carbs, some homemade varieties that contain actual dark chocolate and milk (or plant-based milks) can provide some interesting health benefits. Check out some of these ways that hot chocolate might be good for you:
Good for heart health
Brain power booster
Rich in antioxidants
Helps with the memory
According to Harvard research, hot chocolate contains flavanols and phytosterols, which are able to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood, which can be an indicator of heart disease. Plus, the antioxidants are helpful in the fight against heart disease as well.
Scientific research suggests that the flavanols in cocoa tend to increase the brain’s oxygen levels and activate neurons at a higher rate – equaling better brain performance and improved cognitive function.
Dark chocolate contains antioxidants, like polyphenols and flavonoids, which can help reduce the negative impact of aging, as well as boosting the immune system and reducing inflammation.
One study has shown that drinking hot cocoa twice a day could not only give a memory boost, but may also reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in some people.
Get Creative with Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate is certainly tasty when it is enjoyed on its own, but it also offers a ton of options when new varieties are made with just a bit of creative flair in the kitchen! Check out some of these ideas for taking National Hot Chocolate Day to the next level:
Spicy Mexican Hot Chocolate. Cinnamon, chili powder and dark chocolate turn this hot chocolate drink into something extra special.
Hot Chocolate with Peppermint. This one can be made using either peppermint flavored extract or with chopped up peppermint sticks or peppermint candies.
Boozy Pumpkin Hot Chocolate. Add some pumpkin pie spice to a hot chocolate recipe and then toss in a bit of winter warmth using Kahlua, bourbon, peppermint schnapps or a bit of cinnamon whiskey.
Nutella or Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate. One fun and easy way to add a bit of flavor to hot chocolate is to simply stir in a scoop of peanut butter or Nutella to give a smooth and creamy flavor. This is a fun one that kids can easily take part in as well!
Gift Some Hot Chocolate to Loved Ones
Perhaps National Hot Chocolate Day is a time to not only enjoy some hot chocolate on your own, but to spread the love and cheer by sharing in the day with some friends, coworkers or family members. It could be something as simple as surprising a coworker with a cup of hot chocolate picked up from the local coffee shop on the way to work.
Or maybe celebrating the day means creating special handmade packets of hot chocolate mix. Put them in decorative bags, add some candy kisses or peppermint disks and place it inside of a cute new hot chocolate mug. Make it special by tying a little colorful ribbon around the gift or placing a bow on top, just for this fun and festive occasion.
National Hot Chocolate Day FAQs

Happy National Tree Week in the UK!
Can Black Friday be green? It can if you go on a shopping spree at @jurassic_plants ! The average tree absorbs around 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of atmospheric carbon per year, so planting many trees on your property can add up to an positive impact on reducing your carbon footprint in the long term.
Here is my haul from the Black Friday sale at Jurassic Plants, one of my favourite online plant shops in the UK. Late autumn is a great time to buy seedling trees since the deciduous species are less likely to be damaged in transport because they have already shed their leaves and are dormant. In addition, the trees can be planted in larger pots so they are ready to start growing as soon as they break dormancy in spring. In a plant biology context, dormancy is a temporary period of slowed growth which usually coincides with the winter season. Dormancy can also occur in plants living in environments with designated dry seasons or other times of the year that are generally unsuitable for growth. For most deciduous trees, the trigger is falling temperatures and shorter day lengths.
This year, I welcomed the following species to my ever-expanding family of trees: Castanea sativa - Sweet Chestnut Acer sterculiaceum - Himalayan, Pungent Maple Zelkova serrata - Japanese Zelkova Zanthoxylum piperitum - Japanese Pepper Tree Vitex agnus-castus - Chaste Tree Toona sinensis - Onion Tree, Chinese Cedar, Chinese Mahogany Sorbus domestica - True Service Tree, Sorb Tree Liquidambar styraciflua - Sweet Gum Tree Ginkgo biloba - Maidenhair Tree Cydonia oblonga - Common Quince Cornus mas - Cornelian Cherry Cercidiphyllum japonicum - Toffee Apple Tree, Katsura Tree Cephalotaxus harringtonia - Japanese Plum Yew Aesculus glabra - Ohio Buckeye Aesculus californica - Californian Chestnut Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala - Amur Maple Acer monspessulanum - Montpellier Maple Acer cissifolium - Ivy Leaved Maple

Confetti
Well, another week has come and gone, and as the working hours of Friday float away, my mind goes to think of Confetti fluttering on the wind.
The act of throwing confetti comes from Northern Italy in the middle ages, however it was far from pleasant, with anything from old leaves to rotten eggs launched at noble folk as they made their way through town. Over time this changed to the nobles tossing small sweets from their carriages at the common folk, many of which were Sugared Almonds or Coriander Seeds. The almonds are known as ‘Confetti’, and this is how the name came to be. In the late 1800s the first recorded instance of throwing paper confetti came into place in Paris on New Years Eve, and from there the tradition of throwing paper confetti during a celebration stuck.
Confetti is what started it all for Redhill Confetti. Ten years ago when I was planning my own wedding, I knew I wanted a vintage style theme for decor and such, and having seen some mass produced paper confetti online for a considerable price I knew I could not only make it myself, but do it much more economically. So armed with an old romance novel and a heart shaped hole punch, I spent many an evening in the run up to our big day simply punching paper hearts out of the torn sheets of the novel.
With the wedding over and the honeymoon a long and distant memory, we were still left with a large box of confetti, and rather than throw it away I bagged it up and put it on Ebay. Within a couple of days it had all sold, with people messaging me to ask if I had any more. An idea formed in the back of our minds and at that point the starting blocks of Redhill Confetti were set into place.
Our very first made-to-order product was actually Fifty Shades of Grey confetti, with the book series at the height of its popularity, people loved the idea of delicate small paper hearts fluttering down around them, only for Great Aunt Maud to spot a rather salacious word or two as they settle. With all our copies sourced second hand from charity shops or just given to us where people had heard of us through word of mouth, for a good 18 months we were inundated with those books, before expanding into other titles with everything from fairy tales to golf manuals. Sheet music was another very popular design, with this being very easy to get hold of and always looked beautiful with its aged paper.
When the time came to start a family, the business had been quietly ticking by in the background and in the summer of 2014 I quit my full time job as a logistics coordinator and made a go of the business full time. At the same time I discovered I was pregnant, and in a huge leap of faith I stuck to my plans and finished at the shipping company to work full time in the wedding business. This was by far the scariest but also the best decision I have ever made. With the time and clarity that came with that resignation, I was able to source a UK manufacturer for our Seed Paper, and found the oldest mechanised papermill in the world right here in the South of England.
The seed paper confetti was a huge hit. Handmade from recycled paper pulp, with wildflower seeds actually in the fibres of the paper, we soon found this product so popular we were sourcing at wholesale levels, all whilst hand punching every single piece individually. It certainly gives our arms a workout, though we haven’t yet considered any arm wrestling tournaments.
In 2018 we were offered the chance to stock Forget-me-not seed paper in addition to the wildflower, which has become very well known in the Funeral trade, with the idea of planting new life whilst remembering those that have passed being a timely reminder of how much we miss our loved ones. We now supply numerous charities and NHS Trusts with these seed paper shapes so they can include these small tokens in memorial boxes.
Throughout the pandemic with the restrictions in place for gatherings, many people came to us for seed paper memorial pieces, and I can now imagine there is a new crop of flowering blooms that appear in the memory of those no longer with us.
Now with the pandemic a long way behind us (hopefully), I look to the future to where we can develop confetti supply and what we can offer. At the tail end of 2022 I was lucky enough to be contacted by a local family whose music teacher Aunt had passed away after over 70 years of teaching piano to local families, and with that had amassed a huge collection of sheet music. They were going to simply send the whole lot to the recycling centre before someone put them in touch with me, and three full car loads later my workshop is now full floor to ceiling with music books dating back to the 1930s. With this we are looking to ramp up production of sheet music confetti, with new cutting tools arriving this week.
Well that’s it for another week, the new year settles into place with lots of exciting new things in the works for 2023.
Enjoy your weekends!

Tumblr media
The Vineyard Journey
The journey of a white wine begins in the vineyard, where factors like location and climate play a crucial role. The Fine Wine Company Ltd carefully selects vineyards with optimal conditions for cultivating grapes that will contribute to the exceptional quality of their wines. The choice of grape varieties is equally vital, ensuring they are suited for the production of high-quality white wines.
Harvesting: A Pivotal Moment
Timing is everything in winemaking, especially when it comes to harvesting white wine grapes. The Fine Wine Company Ltd emphasizes the significance of handpicking, a meticulous process that ensures only the finest grapes make their way into the production process. This attention to detail contributes to the superior quality of the wines they offer.
The Art of Crushing and Pressing
Once harvested, the delicate grapes undergo a gentle crushing process. The Fine Wine Company Ltd recognizes the importance of this step in preserving the nuanced flavors of the grapes. Different pressing methods are employed to extract the juice without compromising the integrity of the grapes, resulting in a vibrant and flavorful base for the wine.
Fermentation Magic
Fermentation is where the alchemy of winemaking truly takes place. The Fine Wine Company Ltd meticulously controls fermentation temperatures to bring out the best in each batch of white wine. This careful process ensures that the flavors develop harmoniously, creating a balanced and enjoyable drinking experience.
Maturation in Barrels
Maturation is a transformative period for white wines. The Fine Wine Company Ltd carefully selects barrels that complement and enhance the unique characteristics of each wine. The duration of maturation is a crucial factor, influencing the final taste, aroma, and overall complexity of the wine.
Blending: Crafting Complexity
The art of blending is where winemakers showcase their expertise. The Fine Wine Company Ltd skillfully blends different batches, creating a white wine that is greater than the sum of its parts. This process allows for the crafting of a complex and layered flavor profile that distinguishes their wines.
Filtration and Bottling
Prior to bottling, white wines undergo filtration to remove any remaining sediments. The Fine Wine Company Ltd understands the importance of this step in ensuring clarity and purity in the final product. Bottling techniques are carefully chosen to preserve the integrity of the wine, allowing it to mature further in the bottle.
Quality Assurance and The Fine Wine Company Ltd
Quality is paramount in every step of the winemaking process, and The Fine Wine Company Ltd is dedicated to upholding the highest standards. Their commitment to excellence ensures that each bottle they offer is a testament to the craftsmanship and passion behind the winemaking art.
The Convenience of Online Wine Stores
For consumers, the journey from vineyard to glass is made even more enjoyable by the convenience of online wine stores. The Fine Wine Company Ltd, as an online wine store, provides a seamless experience for enthusiasts to explore and order wines from the comfort of their homes. This accessibility adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the entire wine appreciation process.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the winemaking process behind your favorite UK white wines is a fascinating journey of artistry and precision. The Fine Wine Company Ltd, as wine experts, brings this journey to your doorstep, offering a selection that embodies the passion and dedication of winemakers. As you explore the world of UK white wines, consider the intricate process that transforms grapes into the delightful elixirs that grace your glass. Cheers to the art of winemaking!

Don’t American food companies put corn syrup in everything? Corn is heavily subsidised by the government so they put it in everything…. I heard even the bread at the supermarket is sweet, like I see videos online and why is the bread so perfectly white with no holes??
Not entirely true. Yes, everything here in the US is sweeter but it's not always corn syrup. It's sugar, butter, and all kinds of artificial sweeteners, which includes corn syrup. It's a "by-product" of how commercialized and mass-produced our food is. Sweeteners are added to our food to make it taste better because the commercialized systems that produce our food overprocesses the food, which removes the actual taste from the food. Corn syrup in particular is used as a preservative that keeps packaged food (i.e. the stuff from the factories that most Americans eat because it's cheaper than real fresh food) "fresh" for longer. So everything is sweeter because it's literally being preserved to be shelf-stable for months, if not years.
One of the reasons we do this is because of food accessibility. People will sometimes go for weeks between grocery shops - either they don't live close enough to a grocery store to go frequently (e.g. the daily or several times a week like the average European does) or the price of "clean" food is so high that it's unaffordable. So we default to these pre-packaged super sweet foods because of how much more accessible it is over farm-to-table ingredients/foods. Which in turn gives us this sugar addiction that makes healthy eating movements incredibly difficult. For instance, Michelle Obama and Jamie Oliver's healthy school meals initiatives failed partly because of cost but also mainly because the kids didn't like the food - the new healthy meals weren't sweet enough, compared to "old" meals and other foods, to appeal to the kids.
Thank you for this! US food is so, so sweet comparatively, it's wild.
I do have to ask though - do you include the UK in the 'Europeans several supermarket' visit thing? Because us Brits usually go once a week then to our local corner shop to grab anything extra like milk. We don't typically do a grocery shop more than once a week unless we plan for it. However whenever we've been in Greece this definitely applies, we've always stayed in small villages and gone every few days!
But I agree with you overall. We sell our excess eggs at the end of our driveway and were worried about raising our prices this year to account for the raise in feed for our ducks/chickens... our poor girls can't lay them fast enough right now. But we won't raise our prices because good, healthy food should be more accessible than it is.
