I didn't really see them as parallels before but it's unmistakably there in this moment.
Ace and Yamato, both children of perceived monsters, seeing their lineage as something unshakeable and impossible to escape from. The character work is too good it's ridiculous.
#singlehandedly making me wanna take a shot and i don't even drink#Yamato the ogre (oni) child vs. Ace “son of the devil”. like. man#re-experiencing wano#yamato one piece#portgas d. ace#wano spoilers

Now in the past I've seen people make the claim that Kaido calls Yamato his son only because he wants him to be shogun. Now this always seemed kinda absurd to me cause like I don't think Kaido meant he was gonna have his child formerly recognised by the people of Wano as their leader when he said he wanted yamato to rule, I don't think the gender of the pirate despot really matters, but is there any indication of that in Japanese?
at a certain point i feel like people are just looking for reasons to say yamato's not a man because they don't want to say that they just don't think men can exist that don't fit a certain image of masculinity, yknow?
that aside, though, i don't think this really tracks, because we see in flashbacks that kaidou's underlings used to call yamato 鬼姫/oni-hime ('demon/ogre princess'), an explicitly feminine term, and only switched to calling him 坊ちゃん/bocchan ('young master'), a masculine term, after he was clearly and consistently identifying himself as a man. from what we've seen it seems like kaidou always wanted yamato to be his heir in one way or another, and we know that he wasn't being raised as a boy for that role. he was being raised as a girl, who later started identifying himself as a boy and was recognized as such by the people around him. kaidou himself seems to take much more issue with yamato claiming to be oden, and doesn't really seem to give a shit about his gender either way.
also, the new onigashima plan entailed making all the citizens of wano into slaves. i really can't imagine that it would have mattered if the figurehead ruler put in place over them was a woman.

Re: the One Piece poll
Guys OP has a s literal army of trans characters, it's actually a plot point, there's literally so fucking many trans and NB and genderfluid people in OP its kind of fucking insane
There's Bon Clay/Bentham from as early as Alabasta in March of 2000, 3 years after the initial publication of OP
Bon's powers let him transform into other people, and he's the only member of a bad guy group with male/female partners who doesn't have a female partner bc he's both the male AND female partner in his rank
He doesn't need one bc he's both
Bon is also consistently one of the best characters who helps Luffy, and who deeply respects the bonds of friendship, and he deeply admires Ivankov (next in the list)
Plus, Bon Clay is only one of two in the villain group to become good guys and befriends the main characters
There's fucking Ivankov, Queen of Kammabakka Kingdom an island full of drag queens and trans people, with his hormone powers that lets him trans all the genders for himself and everyone around him (aka the Newkama in Impel Down- a literal army of trans people who help Luffy break out of prison so he can save his brother)
AND he's the second in command of the Revolutionary Army, a group actively against the World Government that controls the entire globe, and is fighting against it's corrupt politics and ideals, such as allowing slavery for the higher classes, fighting the racism against Fishman it's held up for centuries, and all that stuff
Ivankov is one of the most important characters in the series in regards to the world politics and the fight for freedom against the oppression of the WG, and he works with what are unambiguously the Good Guys in the world, who are headed by Luffy's father
There's Okiku in Wano, who its 100% trans and even gets the horny Sanji treatment
(which is kinda important bc there was some Bad Trans/Queer rep earlier in the series involving Sanji running from drag queens who were harassing him and for a while Sanji was pretty transphobic and it was a whole thing, but Oda seems to have learned or educated himself by this point, so yay)
Plus Okiku is a super strong samurai, fucking powerful girl go off, and everyone treats her as one of the girls and she's the best tbh she deserves the world
She's so sweet and kind and strong af and is just as much a warrior as the rest of her group
Plus there's Yamato
Who, to be very clear, is not CONFIRMED as trans, but has a lot of gender fuckery going on that he belongs on this list imo, come to your own conclusions ig
Yamato is 100% confirmed as the biological daughter of Kaido, which is backed up in several other sources and even a colorspread with only biological women, but everyone in the story itself refers to him as he/him, Including Luffy who calls him by Yama-guy/Yamao
(something Luffy only does for men- he calls Ivankov and other more genderfluid or femme leaning queer folks by -chan)
and Yamato calls himself the Son of Kaido multiple times
Yamato saw someone be so awesome that he wanted to emulate that person and become them-
but as an apparently separate decision, he decided he also wanted to be a man, too! Not just because of Kozuki Oden, but because holy fuck look at that gender, I want that for myself!!!
His identity as Kozuki Oden and his identity as Son of Kaido seem to be separate things, bc Kaido, Kaido's forces, Luffy (our main character who helps us understand how to treat situations), and everyone else around him at least acknowledges that Yamato, is, in fact, the SON of Kaido, and everyone, regardless of which side they're on in the war, respects that and treats it as fact
Meanwhile, absolutely no one treats Yamato like he's actually Kozuki Oden
And there's no sign of Yamato being forced to become a man because Kaido wanted a son- 1), he was called Oni Princess fairly consistently as a child by Kaido's forces, and 2) he only became known as Son of Kaido after Yamato himself decided he wanted to become a man
Yamato has refused everything forced on him by his father, and has run away, hid, and fought back at every moment he could, and his gender and pronouns were the only real decision of his own that have been respected as all his other freedoms were taken from him
(Which doesn't say much about his horrible father- Kaido was guided by an incredibly strong female pirate at a young age, and he has plenty of strong women among his crew. Kaido doesn't care about what gender his kid is, or gender at all)
So yeah while Yamato is not confirmed in the text as trans like many other characters are in much more obvious ways, and several sources confirm that he's biologically female, he still goes by Son and he/him by the other characters and by his own choice, so make of that what you will
Please enjoy this spread of Yamato in the Men's bath (he refused to join the women's bc no mixed bathing), and Okiku in the women's
Anyway yeah op has tons of trans, genderqueer, and genderfluid representation in it, it might not look it but it's been there since basically March of 2000 when Bon Clay was first introduced and it hasn't stopped since

Chopper couldn't help feeling festive, but seeing the school girl's horns made him feel a kinship with her. "Ah! You're like Yamato!" Chopper gawked excitedly, understanding this girl to be a smaller oni than Kaido's child.
"I don't need anything but smiles! Don't worry about it!" The present really wasn’t anything much. Instead, it was just a pink sweater with blue stitches that spelled out “Chopper's Christmas Buddy ” as if to say that the girl was his precious friend in question. “Do you like it?” Clearly Chopper made these himself. Smiling a bit wider at the thought of having her state how much she loved them, the boy stepped a little closer to her.

And here we go! So it looks like our cover serial is set and it's going to be Yamato on a grand pilgrimage. Which is a good vehicle to do a lot of things and get to see the country finding a new purpose. These two as a pair are so fun ever since Momo's grown up. They're like, perfect for each other. 28yo manchildren to the core. Momo's trying to act above it but he's jealous he can't just drop everything and go on pilgrimages. Interesting the title calls Yams "Oni Child."
On to business, Yamato on tour means the opportunity to see all of Wano. Including our other friends and what they got up to. There's still that young lady with a trend of conspicuous absence including a big one at the end. Could easily get an answer to that. There's a few ways. You could just simply be doing something more peaceful. Or we could see some hints at an absence. See everyone but Kiku and let it speak for itself. It's on brand.
Think about Goldie, Ace, Caribou, Gedatsu. Kiku no-showing that admiral fight and playing coy at the end was in line with how we quietly bait the hook for these cover serial stars. That's still there, we still echo it in Academy, the answer wasn't that straightforward. Either way, may as well have fun with what we do get here in the meantime.

Tendou Kasumi - Late Start Version
Okay, so, before we begin let's go ahead set some basic information here first.
Who is Tendou Kasumi?
Kasumi is a supporting character from the 80s manga Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi and the anime it is based on. She is a character who exhibits several traits of the yamato nadeshiko trope which represents an idealized Japanese housewife. In the manga, she can be witnessed to have tendency toward biting sarcasm when responding to other characters, but this was mostly lost in the anime where she is the perpetually kind and calm woman who acts as a surrogate mother for her sisters and father.
She is one of the only characters without any hint of martial arts prowess or observable supernatural trait save in just how kind and patient she is.
What is the premise of Ranma 1/2?
Ranma 1/2 is about a teenaged martial artist named Ranma Saotome who has received a curse where they change gender when they get wet. Cold water turns them into a girl and hot water turns them into a boy. Through the machinations of his absolutely terrible father, Ranma has at least two fiancees: the daughter of his father's longtime friend and the friend he had as a child while they were starting their training trip.
Kasumi is the eldest of the friend's daughters and her youngest sister, Akane, is the usual fiancee of the agreement. The middle sister Nabiki has occasionally claimed the role as part of some scheme to her advantage. Ranma has another fiancee due to getting tangled up in the laws of another culture and has a fourth admirer in the form of a mentally ill rich girl. In addition Ranma's girl side is desired by the mentally ill brother of said rich girl. A long time rival of Ranma's has a crush on Akane, and a childhood acquaintance has a crush on the foreign girl pursuing Ranma.
The manga is a satire poking fun at the standard tropes of teenage romances as well as martial arts stories. It blows a lot of these things out of proportion. The anime loses a lot of the satire and mostly focuses on the immediate humor, romance subplots, and fight scenes directly. The success of Ranma is at least one reason for the emergence of the Harem genre where the convoluted romance subplots are done unironically.
What is Late Start?
Late Start is a fanfic I wrote to get myself back into writing a bit after some burnout. It is currently unfinished, but the premise was that instead of coming to the Tendou dojo at age 16, that Ranma instead doesn't learn about the Tendous or the marriage agreements until he's 20. And indeed, Akane and Ranma first meet at a martial arts tournament and hit it off.
The idea was to do the characters without a lot of the teenage confusion. Where they're on more equal footing power-wise, more mature, and have had more time to settle their own issues.
Among other things, each of the Tendou sisters has their own curse. Akane is bound up with a lightning spirit, Nabiki is a vampire, and Kasumi is an oni. While two of those are just made up, Kasumi really did spend some time during the manga and anime possessed by an oni. It operated by trying to draw out and feed on the evil of the people it possessed, and in Kasumi's case that meant doing things that would be considered cruel "pranks" but not nearly to the level of evil one would expect from an oni.
Spoiler for the fanfic necessary to understand the build:
In Late Start, when the oni tried to finally consume her she managed to fight back, but in the process she became an oni. She's convinced her family that she's human and the horns are just a remnant of the possession. However, she is in truth a being of darkness and chaos. Unlike the prior oni, however, compassion is at her core rather than cruelty. This kind of passes since her vampire sister Nabiki is largely just a civilian so not really anybody dangerous.
Kasumi has also joined the Templars (Secret World rather than Assassin's Creed) and secretly investigates and prevents occult disasters while telling her family she goes to a LARP society that copies the MMO "The Secret World" which includes the Templars, Illuminati, and Dragons (I think a made up secret society for the game). So, when Kasumi is not keeping the home, she's basically dressing like this and hunting bad guys. (pictures that follow are a screencap from City of Heroes: Homecoming, a commissioned piece of art by Silky Noire, and a screencap from Secret World Legends, the free-to-play version of the original MMO)
So... I'm going to go ahead and build a version of Late Start Kasumi for Scion as an Origin but give her a quick simulated shift to her visitation and a Hero when she joins the Templars. She's not going to have a Pantheon, instead having a Covenant with the Templars.
The Build
Step One: Concept
Kasumi Tendou is a human woman who turned the tables on a possessing entity that had sought to claim a physical body all of its own. She was willing to share, but the entity only played along with that until it felt strong enough to consume her. Along the way it taught her some conceptual magic. She failed to convince it to share, and she realized she couldn't keep both herself alive and prevent the transformation of her body, so she conceded the change and sneakily focused on being the sole survivor. Leaving her a physically embodied oni with a soul that still possesses primarily human experiences.
She draws sustenance from the friendliness and good will surrounding her as she refuses to take in hate, anger, or fear to sustain herself and risk becoming another evil. Eventually, she comes to the attention of the Templars and joins them. Since then she's been able to receive holy water and blessed rice and draws sustenance from the blessings imparted to the food.
Step Two: Paths
Primary Path: A Creature of Chaos and Compassion Skills: Occult, Subterfuge, Empathy
Secondary Path: Eldest Sister of the Tendou Family Skills: Culture, Integrity, Persuasion
Tertiary Path: Lost Two Battles to win the War Skills: Integrity, Occult, Subterfuge
Step Three: Skills
Based on the Paths and which we assigned as Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary. Primary skills get 3 dots, Secondary 2, Tertiary 1. Any skill that has 3 or higher gets a specialty. This by RAW is only at character creation, but we've generally played that getting to 3 comes with a free specialty as well, rather than making people pay for it.
Culture 2
Empathy 3 (Toxic Beliefs)
Integrity 3 (Kindness)
Occult 4 (Conceptual Magic)
Persuasion 2
Subterfuge 4 (Overlooked)
Step Four: Attributes
Kasumi's Favored approach is going to be Resilience. Primary will be social (6 dots), secondary Mental (3 dots), and tertiary Physical (2 dots). These each get one free dot, and the three Resilience attributes (Resolve, Composure, Stamina) get two free dots as the Favored approach.
Mental
Intellect 2
Cunning 3
Resolve 3
Physical
Might 2
Dexterity 2
Stamina 3
Social
Presence 3
Manipulation 4
Composure 4
Step Five: Calling and Knacks
At Origin she is going to have a single Calling typically if we were building her as a denizen she wouldn't get her Denizen trait and that's it. But we're building her as a scion with a Denizen origin. As for Pantheon... she's going to be a tutelary goddess. IE she's associated with a specific group of people rather than a pantheon. In this case the largely more benevolent version of the Templars that appears in the fanfic.
That said, I want to nod at her being both a denizen and a scion. So I'm giving her a Persistent Condition that causes her trouble. And I'm going to base this a bit on her hunger. She doesn't need food in the same way as humans do, but she still needs to feed.
Persistent Condition: Emotional Hunger: Kasumi must feed on the emotions and spirit of other beings. By preference she only feeds on kindness or other such emotions freely given to avoid taking more negative attitudes into herself. However, if isolated or among hostile beings for long, she may grow hungry and desperate. She can also feed on blessed food (such as holy water, blessed rice, or edible blessings) but it is possible to poison her with cursed food instead, possibly affecting her personality while digesting it. Add Momentum whenever her hunger causes her a problem.
I'm also giving her a second Persistent Condition. As these are a way to produce momentum at the "cost" of drama (oh no, something interesting happens), a second Persistent Condition is something you can only get with GM approval, but this is a theoretical, so let's go with it.
Persistent Condition: Oni Horns: Kasumi has oni horns. She can't hide them. They're always there. They're pointy. When they cause her trouble, add Momentum.
So, now, her Calling. Given the fact that she perceives the world as bundles of concepts and interacts solely on that level. Like she doesn't see with her eyes so much as she is aware of the concept of light and darkness or people walking through it. That feels very much like Sage. So that's what she's starting with. For her Knack, she's getting "Master of the World" to represent the already discussed perceptions.
Step Six: Finishing Touches
This is the end of the Origin character creation. So we do some figured characteristics.
Defense: relates to whichever Resilience attribute she is using to defend with and will thus be either 3 (Stamina or Resolve) or 4 (Composure)
Health: She has the basic Bruised, Injured, Maimed, and Taken Out health statuses. Due to having 3 Stamina, she has a second Bruised status.
And she gains the following:
Five Extra Skill dice: 1 to Empathy, 1 to Integrity, 1 to Culture, 1 to Persuasion, 1 to Athletics
One Extra Attribute die: to Presence
Either two more knacks or four points of Birthrights.
As she cannot use more than a single knack at the moment, but also I can't think of a particular birthright she has from the start. The prequel story I did of her implicated that she had to rebuild her place with her neighbors due to the horns, so the Cult feels like something that came later. Covenant feels like a Legend 1+ thing. Joining the Templars came later at her visitation. So, I'm giving her two more Sage knacks: Presence of Magic and Scent the Divine (available to all Scions) as further representations of how she perceives the world.
Tendou Kasumi - Possession Survivor
Primary Path: A Creature of Chaos and Compassion Skills: Occult, Subterfuge, Empathy
Secondary Path: Eldest Sister of the Tendou Family Skills: Culture, Integrity, Persuasion
Tertiary Path: Lost Two Battles to win the War Skills: Integrity, Occult, Subterfuge
Athletics 1
Culture 3 (Suburbs)
Empathy 4 (Toxic Concepts)
Integrity 4 (Kindness)
Occult 4 (Conceptual Magic)
Persuasion 3 (Gentle Nudge)
Subterfuge 4 (Overlooked)
Mental
Intellect 2
Cunning 3
Resolve 3
Physical
Might 2
Dexterity 2
Stamina 3
Social
Presence 4
Manipulation 4
Composure 4
Calling: Sage 1
General Knacks: Scent of the Divine
Sage Knacks: Master of the World, Presence of Magic
Now, on to Hero
Her visitation comes when she visits a Shinto shrine that is a front for the Templars and receives the invitation to join them. Her route toward that event did involve her instinctively closing a rift that something terrible was trying to slip in through, but mostly it was a social adventure. She spent a while making sure everyone in her neighborhood trusted her despite the clear oni horns on her head and working to break down some of the harmful traditions and concepts that had calcified around people in the area.
I'm going to say this was five sessions worth of game play and say she achieved:
Three short term deeds
One long term deed
One story milestone
Spent half or more the momentum pool five times
But no group experience rewards since it implies she didn't share her true nature with anybody and so I'm saying she did this solo.
Still that's 16 xp before reaching her visitation.
For the sake of humor, I'm going to say the Band deed was helping Nerima to become a healthier community and the Long-term deed was "face another supernatural creature". So she achieved her Band-term before the Long-term... which is a bit funny since Band-terms usually take longer.
Spending that Experience I'm doing the following:
Cult Birthright - 2 dots (10 experience)
Specialty - Empathy: Desires (3 experience)
Specialty - Integrity: Temptation (3 experience)
For the Cult Birthright I'm building it as follows:
Nerima Ward: Community
Light 2, Shadow: 1
Path Skills: Athletics, Culture, Occult (Nerima's a weird place y'all)
Tag: Temple (letting her get access easier to places around the neighborhood)
Responsibilities: Converse with residents and help their mental health.
Light Access Connection: Community center
Light Contact Connection: Shopkeepers
Shadow Contact Connection: The women of Nerima
Visitation
She gains the following from her visitation:
Two additional Callings and 4 Calling dots.
Additional Knacks up to 5 total. Plus any you gained from Finishing Touches. (So 7 total in this case)
Seven dots of birthrights
An Innate Purview
Assign Boons
Legend 1
Calling Keywords
Legendary Title
For her two additional Callings and Calling dots, I'm going with:
Liminal 1
Psychopomp 2
Sage 2
For the Knacks I'm going with (including Origin knacks):
General Knacks: Aura of Greatness (Empathy), Scent of the Divine
Liminal Knacks: Flatlander (to represent how she can bend the concepts of space time)
Psychopomp Knacks: Tending the Egg, This isn't Everything You Are (for how she recognizes where people have harmful preconceptions and tries to help them break past those.)
Sage Knacks: Presence of Magic, Master of the World
For the Seven Dots of Birthrights
Covenant 2 - Templars, Physical Representation: Hakuba Shrine, Enhancement two when dealing with Templars. Access to Covenant boons. Motif: Ancient Occult Knowledge
Relic 3 - Horns (Innate, Chaos and Darkness purviews) Motif: Whispers in to the Soul
Cult 2 - Templars (Conspiracy, Shadow 3, Mystery Society, Coven, Contact: Master Hakuba, Access: Hakuba Shrine)
Note these birthrights come with her first Motifs, these are the ways that Kasumi uses her purviews and magic. So, she can either apply the invocations and incantations taught to her by the Templars... or she can engage in intimate conversation where she encourages the other person to bare their soul.
For the Innate Purview
Passion (Compassion)
For Boons:
Chaos: Loosen Chains - Allows her to Imbue 1 Legend to clear a person's mind or soul from an unnatural corrupting influence. To make it permanent she must interrupt the source of the influence (by defeating the sorcerer, ghost, demon, talisman, etc) A possessing entity is forced out of the victim's body as long as this is sustained. (A variation of the Marvel to clear a Condition where she can imbue instead of spend Legend. Which means I had to make sustaining it necessary)
Passion Boon: Tugging at Heartstrings
Legend becomes one and now I am going to do Calling Keywords and her Legendary Title:
Liminal Keyward: Oni
Sage Keyword: Concept, Soul
Psychopomp: Guide, Kindness
And for her first Legendary Title: The Nerima Oni.
That gives us the following version of Kasumi as a newly recruited Templar agent of extreme potential. Now, the version of Kasumi that is in the fanfic is probably Legend 2 or 3, has learned to use a shotgun, has acquired a Mutation ability similar to a titanspawn, and is generally more powerful. But this would represent the start of her Templar career when she was more support than badass.
Tendou Kasumi - The Nerima Oni
Primary Path: A Creature of Chaos and Compassion Skills: Occult, Subterfuge, Empathy
Secondary Path: Eldest Sister of the Tendou Family Skills: Culture, Integrity, Persuasion
Tertiary Path: Lost Two Battles to win the War Skills: Integrity, Occult, Subterfuge
Legend 1
Title: The Nerima Oni
Keywords:
Liminal: Oni
Psychopomp: Guide, Kindness
Sage: Concept, Soul
Skills
Athletics 1
Culture 3 (Suburbs)
Empathy 4 (Toxic Concepts, Desires)
Integrity 4 (Kindness, Temptation)
Occult 4 (Conceptual Magic)
Persuasion 3 (Gentle Nudge)
Subterfuge 4 (Overlooked)
Attributes
Mental
Intellect 2
Cunning 3
Resolve 3
Physical
Might 2
Dexterity 2
Stamina 3
Social
Presence 4
Manipulation 4
Composure 4
Callings
Liminal 1
Psychopomp 2
Sage 2
Knacks
General Knacks: Aura of Greatness, Scent of the Divine
Liminal Knacks: Flatlander
Psychopomp Knacks: Tending the Egg, This isn't everything you are
Sage Knacks: Master of the World, Presence of Magic
Purviews
Covenant (Birthright)
Passion (Compasison) - Innate
Chaos (Horns Birthright)
Darkness (Horns Birthright)

I still don't personally think that Yamato is trans man.
As mush as everyone loves that headcanon - it's still just a popular headcanon.
1. Vivre Card. It officially made with Oda's help. Why on earth he would misgender own trans character? If we exclude the possibility of Oda being transphobic (and he could be I think tbh) it's strange that Yamato doesn't have a single word about her actually thinking she's a man.
"vivre card not canon" Why? No, really, why? Where did you even got that? Their whole point to give you canon info ab character that you may not knew or that isn't super important but still relevant - height, favourite food, some silly fact, etc. why they exist if they aren't canon? Just to shit on merch?
Such a stupid and strange idea to misgender own trans character, don't you think?
2. Yamato's own literal words.
She is calling herself a man, because ODEN was a man. It's a very important thing here - she doesn't say she's s man in any other way that you would probably think - she doesn't say she was born in other body or literally any other way to say she is a man. No.
Oden was a man, so she is too.
If Oden was a rock she would call herself rock too.
She doesn't have any gender conscious about herself in any ways. It also the explanation on why she uses masculine pronouns. Pronouns in Japanese work a bit different also - you can use male ones while being a woman, like many tomboys can do (the easiest example - Haruka from Sailor Moon. She uses male pronouns but aren't thinking ab herself as a male, and even in op we have Big Mom who uses Ore but still is obviously woman)
3. Yamato's lack of reaction at being misgendered.
I don't really think you would be comfortable with getting your gender wrong - yet she doesn't cares! When Sanji calls her Yamato-chan and when Brook and Sanji are simping for her she doesn't react at all, when being called Oni Princess she's rather sad about being treated like Kaido's child than being misgendered, etc.
5. Oda's drawings.
"yes, i have a trans character, I'll draw him in oiran clothes and on color spread that is dedicated to One Piece women. And also call her daughter of Kaido when introducing him." Like damn. Don't deny the facts at least here - Oda himself doesn't treat her like a man in any way. Why would i care about calling Yamato a man when even author doesn't fucking think so and don't care??
...And the bath scene.
Booba fanservice. That's all.
It all makes it up to me that either Oda will have to change the way he treats Yamato and make it more obvious that she's a female or start treating her like a male. Without any actual jokes. Please.
#i still hate yamato with all my heart#but I can't take it anymore#if oda will show me for character who is 'libirating' themselves with pretending to be someone else#despite it being the absolute opposite of being free#i'm going to kill someone#one piece#can't stand her annoying ass#my thoughts#yamato

With Persona 3 and Nocturne being remastered, It would be absolutely fantastic if Digital Devil Saga and Raidou Kuzunoha came out again too. I enjoyed watching the movies, and think I would really enjoy playing them, particularly the former. The Later, however, is part of a lore I am really enjoying learning about, and that is Devil Summoners.
The series as we know it started with the invention of the COMP, by Akemi Nakajima- a Bishōnen programer and amature magician- back in Digital Devil Megami Tensei story, a game based on novels by Aya Nishitani. Check out Marsh if you want to learn more about them.

But back to devil summoners, the most known is Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th, of the Kuzunoha clan, and the protagonist of the Raidou Kuzunoha games. The Kuzunoha clan is a clan of devil summoners based on the legend of Kuzunoha in Japan.
"Kuzunoha is the name of a popular fox spirit of Japanese folklore, and is closely connected to the legends surrounding famed Onmyōdō Abe no Seimei. In the legend, the father of Seimei, Abe no Yasuno was visiting a shrine in Shinoda when he came across a hunter who had trapped a white fox in order to take its liver to sell as medicine. Abe no Yasuno fought off the hunter and saved the white fox, but not before sustaining serious injuries to himself. In the aftermath, he is saved by a mysterious, enchanting woman named Kuzunoha and the two eventually fall in love and get married.
Later, Kuzunoha gave birth to Abe no Seimei, who was born with strange powers, and by the age of five, he was said to be able to to see and command lesser Oni. One day, when Abe no Seimei was still a child, he noticed his mother possessed a fox's tail under her kimono. Realizing her disguise had been found out, she fled her home and returned to Shinoda; her husband and son pursued her and she revealed she was the very same white fox that Abe no Yasuno had saved many years ago. Kuzunoha gives her son a special book that will allow him to speak with beasts, and bids farewell to her family, never to be seen again. Her famous farewell poem can be found on a silk parchment in the Inari Shrine in Izumi."
So in the Megami Tensei overall lore, naturally that forms the basis of a clan of devil summoners who exist long before COMPS become a thing. This is also a history where the Taisho era lasted longer than IRL.
Also Hirasaki City area was once part of a small country that fought the Yamato dynasty off with magic and demons, had ties to China, and defeated the Yamato army, but lost in the long run, whereupon the queens only daughter was captured, tortured, and executed in a cruel manor, and her spirit was so angry it needed to be sealed for safety.
And then there's whatever is going on with Sumaru that has students in school during July, but the rumors coming true isn't new (I'd guess ten years but an exact timeline is hard to pin), and that's before the city was retconned by rumors to have a history involving things like a local princess, as of The EP timeline from which the other persona games follow.
It's also a reality where SMT 1 was averted, and instead If timeline events happened. So there are people who are born naturally capable of using magic (such as law and chaos hero), and a highschool student brought his school into an alternate dimension, filled with demons, true death was canceled, and he became ruler. Two students then proceeded to fight their way through said world and defeat him to get back to the human world.
The history students are screaming. The devil summoner games have connections to the persona games, and the crossover brings me joy. The tech tree evolution is hilariously wack.
So that all said, let's talk about Summoners, facts, extrapolation, and headcanons. Starting with Showing up in multiple games. (Soul hackers 2 not included as I have not yet interacted)
Madame Ginko:- the overseer of the Kuzunoha clan, and the most respectfully treated trans person in the series, the owner of Club Cretaceous (understandably has a lot of summoners), and has preference for Dragon Demons, according to Demikids.
In spite of her showing up the most of anyone on this list, I don't really have a lot of headcanons for her really. I heard she was a bodyswapper, and according to her bio her hobby is moon watching, and favorite food is Oden. Her blood type is Type A, which in Japan does give personality indication.
Maybe later I'll do a post on blood types and Megaten universe characters who share that blood type.
Has a bodyguard in the form of Utsumi Kunihiko, blood type AB, who likes pizza and breeding tropical fish.
Kinap:- first showing up in Devil Summoners as a user of the DDS-Net who gives you hints and hacks into a museum sincerity system for you.
In Soul Hackers, Kinap is probably not the same being as last time, but who knows, as he is never shown on screen. Spoilers ahead for plot points in Devil summoner soul hackers.
In mythology:- "In Mi'kmaq folklore, a Kinap is a mortal human gifted with uncanny physical strength and other powers. In many legends, a Kinap's power manifests as a child, and he either becomes a child-hero or dies young by using too much of his strength too early. In other legends, an adult Kinap features as a mortal hero slaying a terrible monster or leading the other Micmac men into battle. ."
He sends the protagonist on vision quests throughout the game. Apparently Kinap was once a Shaman who tamed Manitou, and proceeded to use him in battles to be Victorious in wars, and used the slain foes as sacrifices, to grow Manitou stronger.
Then one day he realized "oh snap. Feeding it all these souls might make it too strong and I will lose control one day." So he took preventive action and sealed Manitou away. He also created Nemissa out of a fragment of his soul, but for her to be effective, she would need to understand humans. Rather than introduce her to some humans he knew then, he sealed her and abandoned his mortal form to watch over them. And possibly Devil Summoners Protagonist IDK. Obviously that goes super well, lol.
Let's deffine Manitou :- " Manitou is the belief of Algonquians meaning “mysterious being,” or simply “mystery”. It is an Algonquian word that represents the unknown power of life and the universe. Common among the indigenous peoples of North America, it is related to the concept of mana, a personal supernatural force, and connected to the worship of the sun. A supernatural force that according to an Algonquian belief permeates the natural world.
Manitou is universal and manifests everywhere: the environment, events, organisms, etc. When the world was created, Aashaa monetoo meaning the “good spirit” or “great spirit”, gave the land to the indigenous peoples, specifically to Algonquian-speaking ethnic group indigenous Shawnee. In some Algonquian traditions, it was also called Gitche Manitou.
Native Americans acknowledge traditional healers and spiritual leaders who used manitou to see the future, heal illness, and change the weather. Ojibwe traditional healers used their spiritual connection to cure patients since the illness was believed to be caused by spirits and magic. To communicate with spirits and influence manitou, a healer would sing, dance, and drum beats to enter a trance. They sometimes also used hallucinogens to make a connection. For non-healers, they interacted with spirits by embarking upon a “vision quest,” by means of hallucinogens, fasting, praying, and by isolating themselves from society. A person who underwent vision quests would see objects or animals and also heard voices that would become later on as his or her guardian spirit.
In tribes that practice shamanistic rituals, manitous are connected to an inanimate object or animals to achieve the desired effect. A buffalo manitous for a successful hunt or plant manitous may be connected for healing. It involved the belief that shamans had the power to communicate with spirits, heal the sick, and help bring souls of the dead to the afterlife.
The early Native Americans in Illinois believed that each person has his own god, which they call their Manitou. It could come in a form of a bird, serpent, or other similar things, of which they have dreamed while sleeping. These manitous were considered as a lucky token. For war, manitous came in the form of species of birds, including falcons, crows, ducks, swallows, and parakeets. Representations such as skin or feathers of their manitous were displayed on their homes to ask for guidance and power when they went for fishing, hunting, or war.
As soon as adolescents became aware, it was expected that young adults start their vision quest in the wilderness. To trigger a manitou in a dream, the young adults went fasting without food and water for up to seven days. A manitou could take the form of a bear, wolf, bison, mountain lion, deer, bobcat, bird, or some other animal. "
What does the megaten wiki say about Manitou?
"Originally Manitou was a great spirit of the land found in North America, but Kinap utilized Manitou as a weapon in ancient times. Contact with mankind and their souls threatened to turn the peaceful mindless force into an entity of destruction. Kinap then sealed Manitou away and created Nemissa from Manitou to bring death to it should it ever be awakened and become a force of destruction.
The Phantom Society and Kadokura find the entity, and make their own plans to give it the souls of mankind for their own agendas. Manitou is also capable of feeding on the souls of demons, as shown by the slain Godly soul that it gains power from. "
It kind of sounds like Manitou should have been the one sending you on Vision quests, and generally working with Kinap. They have just sort of used Manitou as a buzzword. Nemissa Is a legend of a star goddess who seduces a hunter.
But yeah, they are more used as cool names, not particularly respectfully researched or portrayed use of legends from native people. I like Nemissa as a character, but as far as mythology goes, she's an OC with a legend based name.
If they wanted a native legend that actually ate souls, they could go for Nalusa Chito, assuming they did their research with cultural consultants of the mythology they are inspired from and portray it respectfully.
" Nalusa Chito, also known as a Impa Shilup, was the soul-eater, a great black beingIf individuals allowed evil thoughts or depression to enter their minds, Impa Shilup would creep inside them and eat their souls. "
Don't speak their names.

As an antagonist, it could probably suit the cyberpunk setting of the time pretty well.
"Cyberpunk narratives often incorporate a sense of hopelessness or nihilism, typically featuring a gritty and violent backdrop, with crime, artificial intelligence, class uprising, governmental and corporate corruption, anarchy, gang warfare, and transhumanism all being central themes. The range is broad but the combination of these themes in the cyberpunk aesthetic is often used to convey deeper meanings and commentate on modern society and sometimes predictions of future society."
Soul hackers was first published in 1997, during Japan's lost decade, the name for its economic crisis.

I think ending the game by defeating a soul eating depression monster , especially during Japan's lost decade would have been a hopeful ending to the game. A way of saying "maybe it does suck now, but we can turn it around"
Oh wow, I've wandered pretty off topic. I'll end this one here, and come back and talk about Rei, and other characters later.

The new cover story calls Yamato 'oni child' and I was wondering if it was gender neutral in Japanese or if that was just a translation choice. Thank you in advance!!
[chapter 1110 spoilers]
yes! yamato is referred to on the cover page as 鬼の子/oni no ko. ko is just ‘child’, and no ko is a fairly common construction used to mean ‘child of _’ or ‘_ child.’ for example, 女の子/onna no ko (‘girl child’) or 男の子/otoko no ko (‘boy child’), or 虎の子/tora no ko (’tiger cub’).
this is distinct from the gendered language used to refer to yamato in his intro nameplate as kaidou’s ‘daughter’; that word is 娘/musume, which is explicitly feminine. and he generally identifies himself as kaidou’s 息子/musuko, ‘son’, which is likewise explicitly masculine.

Blood. He can smell it everywhere. Acrid and haunting. It's not his own. It's not Ultimo's, not Kei's, nor Vice's.
It's the blood of all the innocent people, amongst the smell of broken wood, kicked up rubble and concrete. Rock dust and grit and blood, making a horrific wet concrete smell.
Ultimo, in his horrific glory, stands in it all. His ICON; a paragon of purity. Of purity that suffers no imperfection. Untarnished white and gold and red. Sunken eyes rapidly jump from place to place. Hypervigilant and cruel. Fans become blades, their edges razor-sharp to cut through the tarnished, evil masses.
Vice now stands his opposite. His edges sharp... to defend himself. Claws at the ready and stance tense. His ICON appears far more armored, like a skeletal oni samurai. Plated armor covers himself and he wields a great kanabō. He is very much the same in appearance as he ever was, but far more prepared.
There is no silence as Ultimo's eyes fall on him... and freeze. The sounds around them echo pain and collapsing buildings. But Vice is clean of debris, and blood rolls off of Ultimo's armor, as if shedding himself, unconsciously, of the blame.
"Ultimo, this has to end." Yamato announces, as Vice is constantly scanning for movement and the telltale surge of the time-altering noh starting to charge.
"..." There's just silence.
"There's no need to fight. You know we're stronger. We have every noh at our command. You won't win."
Slowly, Ultimo turns on a heel to face them.
"We're going to stop everything. We're going to beat Dunstan and end all of this. Everything. For..." The next word dies on his tongue.
"For good?" Ultimo's sweet, child-like voice makes him flinch as he finishes the sentence, "Come now, Yamato, don't look like that." His fans raise up and sweep out, to the scene around them, "We killed just as many nobles, all to end a tyranny." His head slowly tilts to the side. "A tyranny that managed to continue... regardless of everything we did. Because evil still exists. Evil that you've sided with... I should have known, ever since you took in Lady Gekko."
"Evil will always exist." Yamato tenses up as Ultimo's hands start to lower. Vice warns him of a surge. They begin to gather energy as well, trying to boost their chances of winning what's about to happen.
Ultimo's pupils suddenly constrict, and there's little to describe the next thing that happens. A rapid stop and go as time flashes back and forth. As their place in space-time is warped, changed, and threatens to break something far more precious than anything else.
They draw the attention of something unseen...
But in the midst of the battle, four people disappear. A daughter and her douji taken by her father... and the two who tried to stop it who were taken as well.
Yamato tries, through the battle, to talk to Kei, to make him see the pain he's put everyone through, his own niece who he took in to protect.
His niece who's yelling.
Yelling?
Yamato turns. He sees Kia on a roof with Rage, screaming to get his attention.
"Dunstan has Mizho and Sayama!!!"
...Which means Paresse and Regula, too.
Paresse.
Dunstan has Paresse.
Panic surges from Yamato and he stops holding back. Ultimo charges him a final time, Crane Sword drawn and ready to spear them... and Yamato spins Vice around with Rage's speed and the kanabō collides with Ultimo's skull. A resounding finality cracks through the air. Robot and master crumple to the ground, unmoving.
It truly had been an uneven fight. If he hadn't held back, it would be over already. Dunstan wouldn't have been able to take them. He'll, he never should have started this fight in the first place. Vice had been right.
"We move!" Yamato yells, "Now!!"

Yuugi/Satori, Shou/Miko, or Mokou/Kaguya
"Myself and Yuugi? What a combination."
Alright now as far as naming goes this time around. I wanted to go with some sort of reference to actual mythological onis, what with Yuugi herself being Hoshiguma-Douji. It was just a question of what to reference. It wound up coming down to Otakemaru, the famous kijin, or Gouki, the typical name for the blue oni in the red oni/blue oni pair. I wound up going with Gouki because I feel it's notably less of a mouthful. Also, like, the blue oni is the one that tends to be depicted with one horn so pretty fitting with Yuugi.
Did you know that when you cross pink and blonde hair together it makes white? ... Well, it probably doesn't but I'm not passing up the opportunity to use a certain favorite character as an oni face claim. How could I not use Yamato from One Piece? Sadly no one horn, not a true blue oni.
Anyways, say hello to Komeiji Gouki. Heir to both the Rulership of the Underground and the child of one of the four Deva. Gouki has the ability to predict strange phenomenon. Which is basically just code for knowing that an incident will happen a short time before it actually occurs.
Drawing from the concept of the blue oni, Gouki is pensive and thoughtful. Still quite physically strong. They could lift her enemies with a single hand and pound them to death with their club. They'd just prefer to find a peaceful compromise for both parties ... and also they'd more than that prefer to just say within the palace reading all day.
They have a cool and unemotive surface. Appearing stoic and almost aloof. Though, the reality, is that this is less their true nature and more a result of not quite knowing how to talk to people. Being a cross between a youkai race most people fear and one most people hate they're quite aware that they've got little ground to stand on socially.
Satori has spent much of her time trying to shape Gouki to be an appropriate successor in ruling the Underground. Meaning they've spent slightly more time together. Yet they are also happy to let Yuugi take them out to explore the strange parts of Old Hell, brawl with other oni, and rampage. Even if their heart isn't fully in.

I think it was intended (in the manga). The frame (also in the anime, but not in the latest episode) of Yamato at Oden's funeral is as a tall oni. Cos he was as a child. Even at that age. Jack was too!
This is episode 972 that kinda parallels the manga cap you've got above for chapter 971. Oda might've confirmed it was him too? Or maybe it was just fans speaking. I can't remember. Yeah, Oda definitely plays with the perspective, but small Yamato is also really cute. Sad episode.
A small detail that i wasn't sure was intended or not in the manga; that 8 year old Yamato is about the same size as an adult (plain human??) man due to his oni blood.
(He is smaller than the 3 samurai though)
But i do love the adorable feisty lil fella in the anime all the same 🥰
