Am I the asshole for getting my best friend killed?
I swear to God, it was an accident.
My (27) BF (34) has a reputation for getting himself out of any jam you can imagine; and at first it was just a fun little thing the friend group noticed: there goes Oily J wiggling his way out of trouble again. but as the meme evolved in the group, it got to the point where we'd loykey started getting him into situations just to see how he'd get out of 'em, and he akept getting out of em. He was having fun with it too same as us. "Oh you guys," he'd say, "getting me into situations again," before laughing it off and getting out of it, so it was enrichment for our shared enclosures, and as time went on, the situations got more intense.
The trouble is, it turns out that putting a man in too many situations eventually gets the police interested. And not local hobsknockers cops either; they was like, proper three-letter FEDs. They put out a bounty on any information pertaining to his capture and everything. It was good money too so I thought, hey why don't I put J in another situation he can wiggle out of like always (and he'd wiggled outta worse before, so I thought this one'd be relatively mild), and at the next boardgame night (cause it was too late to do anything special for this one) we can buy some extra strong booze and get absolutely blitzed while having a giggle about the situation.
Boardgame night, and we were playing some social deduction nonsense or another and he says: "One of you is gonna betray me tonight." and I can't help but think, looking back on it, that he knew. It's stupid, I know he was talking about the game, but the way he said it, it was like he knew. We all felt it, and we had a big round robin round the table taking turns promising that we'd never betray him. And I said it so easily cause I thought it was true. Sure, I was gonna talk to the feds about a bounty; but, I fully expected my big beautiful oily boy to wiggle his way out of the trouble I was 'bout to cause, and that's not a betrayal. I wasn't lying. I didn't think I was lying.
My big beautiful oily boy didn't manage to wiggle his way out of it. They killed him and I got my blood money. He's gone.
He's gone and I'm devastated, crying, mourning. I loved him so much. We all did. And I can't stop thinking that it's my fault: that I'm the reason he's gone. and it is. and the guilt is eating me up inside. and I just need to talk to someone about it. So, I tell the rest of the group what happened in the group chat, hoping they'd understand that I didn't want this. I didn't want the government's blood money. It was supposed the be a prank. some joint enclosure enrichment. He was supposed to wiggle out of it like he always does... did, i mean.
They call me, among worse things, the asshole and kick me from the group chat. And, I know it's my fault he's dead: I know that. If I didn't do what I did, he wouldn't be dead right now. But, I didn't mean it for it to end up this way. He was supposed to be okay, damn it. I loved him. AITA?
What are these acronyms?
#aita#am i the asshole#fandom aita#unreality#i never know how to tag the bible ones#also i don't think this is explicitly jesus christ superstar but for some reason it put me in mind of it#so that's where the extra option is from idk#specifically in my head is one particular production of it that a friend showed me when we were like. 17#anyway i'm in love with how this one plays with modern language#good enough to post on purpose

so a thing this fandom does that remains FASCINATING to me, as a function of the fact a lot of this fandom is people's first fandom or only current fandom, is just... assume a lot of things it does is a scourge that this fandom has invented or doesn't exist outside of it? or like, is uniquely bad here? and i won't deny that sometimes mcyt fandom is a bit more intense by virtue of numbers, but like...
duo names: confusing fandom-injokes to describe duos and groups tend to be an anime fandom thing specifically for many historical reasons, but they're not uncommon. hey quick--if you haven't been in KHR fandom, can you guess what 1827 is? no? i'll give you a hint: that's actually a ship name. or, ygo fans, tell me the difference between puppyshipping, prideshipping, violetshipping, and rivalshipping. my hint is that they're all kaiba ships and two of them are actually the same ship. good luck!
reducing characters to a specific trait: have you read fic in another fandom before? i would recommend you go do so and come back to me. my example here is "sasuke likes tomatoes", for the record.
common au fanon that's confusing to outsiders: my deep cut here is "when i got into certain tv fandoms i was baffled by the existence of sentinel/guide fics", which is a slightly older tv fandom thing so many of you probably don't know what i'm on about. but trust me: in certain fandoms it's ubiquitous and unless you've watched a completely different tv show you're gonna have to entirely pick it up from reading fic. oh hey, hybrid aus and watcher!grian, nice to see your relative here,
fanon being treated as canon: did you know there's this whole bnha character, naomasa, who is treated as canonically having a lie detector quirk? did you know that, best i can tell, that's not in canon anywhere, it just got echoed through fanon enough that everyone treated it as canon? 'fanon trait becomes so ubiquitous everyone assumes it has to be there' is not a new thing. also, batfamily fans, i have been lead to understand the tim and coffee thing is also this.
characters being treated badly to make a different dynamic look better: the fact we have the term 'character bashing' tells you all you need to know, here. if anything my one complaint on this front isn't even that it's happening--it's that i wish bashing and/or "not [character] friendly" was tagged a little more frequently, haha.
characters being reduced to their family dynamics: tale as old as time. "even the family dynamic thing" yes even that. just because this fandom tended to be particularly ship-adverse in the past didn't mean it didn't do basically the same behaviors as any fandom with shipping did with those dynamics, just gen. and other gen fandoms also do that. yes, down to the "and shipping reduces them to a ship, unlike my gen dynamic, which is very in-character; why can't people just be friends?" thing. some of you have to have been marvel fans right.
characters being reduced to their ships: some of you have to have been marvel fans right.
The Discourse: yeah this is an "actively running show" fandom thing, but also a hiatus fandom thing. ask a homestuck about vriskourse sometime. as much as i hate to say it, it probably made doomsday discourse look cute.
and those are just like... some things i've seen people complain about on my dash recently. idk it just hit me there are probably fans in mcyt fandoms who are assuming that some things (like hybrid aus or duo names) are the kind of things that only happen here, so i thought i'd offer some examples of other places they happen! i also have even more examples if you'd like.
to be clear: this isn't shaming anyone for complaining about any of these things. lord knows i go complain to my friends about it all the time, just the other day i was complaining in the category of 'they keep bashing my guy'. it's more of just... a gentle reminder that maybe we're big, maybe we're loud, maybe we have problems... but these problems aren't always unique.
so uh. we're all suffering together i guess...?
#discourse#<- because. yeah.#this isn't meant to start a discourse this is more me laughing about Fandoms Is The Same#its also why i'm not bringing up the More Serious types of Fandoms Is The Same because i don't want to make light of it#and am instead bringing up the pettier ones#this sparked initially by someone acting like duo names are a this-fandom only phenomenon after years of being a ygo fan#and i was like. oh i've done this song and dance many a time.#and then i was thinking about posts complaining about things like fd and ships and everything else and i was like. oh that's an OLD song#so here. so we all remember sometimes that we all suffer together lol#this isn't a vague of anyone in particular i just constantly waver about making this specific post#anyway back to my usual discourse-free self

I really hate when some danmei fans treat the main couple as infallible and completely morally correct when more often than not analyzing the way their morality grays helps you understand the main couple's characterizations and dynamics better. Take WWX and LWJ for example. Neither of them are in the complete moral right because no one in that book is. Society is nuanced. WWX was in the wrong for disregarding many of his responsibilities throughout the novel, but he was also in the right for rescuing the Wen. LWJ was in the right for defending WWX and LSZ, but he was in the wrong for blindly reaching for WWX and often antagonizing everyone else. You can't truly like or understand a character without acknowledging that they are flawed and in fact not in a moral pedestal within the book. You can't call WWX justified for breaking ties with JC without also acknowledging JC was justified in being upset with WWX. The main couples in these novels are not infallible and it's honestly extremely annoying to see some fans bash side characters for their dubious morality (cough cough Mu Qing, Jiang Cheng, Qi Rong, etc) while also putting their favorite main couple on an untouchable moral superiority.
#looking at tgcf and mdzs fans in particular#svsss fans you usually avoid this but it still ends up happening sometimes#honestly don't see a lot of this with meatbun fans but i don't really engage with that fandom a lot so idk#this is also specifically targeted towards that one hc fan i interacted with who hates qi rong for killing people#and called him unjustified#when their fave literally ALSO KILLS PEOPLE#AND OFTEN UNJUSTIFIEDLY#danmei#mxtx novels#tw discourse#tgcf#mdzs#svsss

looking back at ye olde combo book fandom i can only describe the feeling as feeling like if Superwholock got a divorce
#this is EXTREMELY specific but like. if you were there you remember#that like very specific 2010-2014ish era of book fandoms where everybody used the same filter on edits and there were all the movies#and adaptations and everybody was excited#and so a bunch of book fandoms formed the superwholock of book fandoms (there were like 4 primary ones but it could get up to like ~6#sometimes more but if it went over 6 it was usually just kind of general multifandom book fandom rather than this specifically#and while it didnt have a name it had a symbol. if you have been in general fandom long enough you *know* the symbol#or the symbol variants#cause there was this little period in book fandom where everybody LOOOOVED having a symbol for their series#it was a lil bit of a general fandom thing too but for book fandoms in particular it was like a THING#my deepest condolences to anybody who got a tattoo of the combo symbol#i can do a lil history post on this later but im just. ahhh those sure were Times

Attack on Titan is a layered, multifaceted story that deals with many, many ideas—prejudice, propaganda, power, love, truth…I could go on. But more than anything, it’s about war. Attack on Titan is a war story. In that sense, it’s no surprise at the number of scenes that utilize fight, either as a concept, action, or just the word itself. It’s a story about fighting.
Or is it?
(It is. But it’s not about the fight. I’ll get there.)
The pivotal moment of the story occurs in season 3, when our characters go from fighting a war they don’t understand to fighting a war they do. The war itself hasn’t changed, nor the world, but now they know what they’re up against. But I’m not here to talk about that pivot—I’m here to talk about the narrative choice that was made a few episodes before that, and the thematic importance of that choice.
I’m here to talk about Midnight Sun.
The choice between Armin and Erwin has long since been a topic of debate amongst AOT fans. Whether it was the right choice, how happy or unhappy it made viewers, why exactly the choice was made, and so on and so forth. I’ve always found it to be a very simple yet effective piece of storytelling—one that walks a very fine line of displaying a core story theme and honoring the characters involved.
Interestingly, Levi, who’s historically a follower and not a leader, is the one to make this very important narrative choice. It was carefully designed, too—everything he’s witnessed so far in this season has led to this moment, and this very important decision he’ll make.
Now of course, as with everything, there’s a Watsonian and a Doylist reason for this decision to bring Armin back and not Erwin. Levi’s role in the choice is primarily a Watsonian one—he was one of the closest characters to Erwin, and he was the one to see Erwin struggle in his last moments before the charge.
Levi outright tells us his thought process after he makes the choice. After Erwin had let go of his dream, his struggle, which was as much a burden to him as a drive to continue forward, Levi thought it cruel to being him back into the world just because humanity needed a devil. It’s a human decision, and Levi made it for someone he cared deeply for.
But from a Doylist perspective, there’s a thematic reason as to why Armin was chosen and not Erwin. Obviously Levi, as a character in the story, is not thinking of what Erwin’s and Armin’s respective dreams are narratively representative of. Levi, in making his choice, didn’t so much as pick Armin as he didn’t pick Erwin. He was letting Erwin go, and he wasn’t thinking about what that would do to the story.
But I am!
Levi has been witness to both Erwin’s and Armin’s dreams, and he’s smart enough to place those dreams within the context of the war they’re fighting.
He asked Erwin explicitly what he would do when his dream was fulfilled—once they got to the basement in Shiganshina and learned the truth of the world. Erwin said he didn’t know.
Conversely, when Armin talked with his friends about after the war, he spoke of the sea. Of exploration beyond the walls, of seeing the wonders he’d only been able to read about. Unlike Erwin, he knew exactly what he would do when the fighting ended.
Now, does this mean to imply Erwin would’ve been useless after reaching the basement? Of course not. Had he survived, he would have continued to lead. But thematically, his purpose in the narrative was to drive the fight forward at any cost. We see this over and over—from the first expedition outside Wall Rose to his last charge against the Beast Titan. That’s what he represents, and that’s what his dream led to.
Armin’s dream, though, extends beyond the fight. He only cares about winning the war in that it will allow him the chance to explore and experience the wonders of the world.
Choosing Armin over Erwin, thematically, represents AOT’s fundamental view on war and fighting. The drive to win is not nearly as important as hope for the future. For after the fight is over.
Armin has always found solace and hope in things other than the war that has defined his and his friends’ lives. He dreams of the ocean. He worships his friends. He lives, as he tells Zeke in the final final final season, for the small moments with them. “Maybe I was born to race Eren and Mikasa up that hill.” That would be enough for him, even without his grand dream of the sea.
I genuinely think this choice is the closest thing AOT has to a thesis statement. This story shows us a plethora of messy situations to which there is no clear-cut solution. It displays a huge range of perspectives and philosophies without telling us what is good and what is bad. (Although it does, very specifically, tell us that genocide is bad, Eren!)
This choice in Midnight Sun, though, is more than a choice between two characters for survival. It speaks to what is most valuable in a world that seems to always be trying to kill you.
What good is winning the war if you don’t have something to hope for beyond that?
In other words, there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.
#attack on titan#shingeki no kyojin#armin arlert#erwin smith#aot#snk#mymeta#kylerrambles#midnight sun my beloved#and i could write a whole other essay on levi’s specific and messy relationship with erwin#but this was the particular thing gnawing on my shoe currently#i think this is somewhat echoed in eren’s final choice#what good is the outside world if you’ve trampled it all? you have to look beyond that!#not to mention this theme is communicated without vilifying either erwin or armin#something which fandom has never been able to do when discussing this particular story beat :P#erwin gets a very dignified though tragic death#and the only one who hates armin surviving (besides floch who is. the worst.) is HIMSELF#take notes fandom!#and it’s explicitly echoed in levi’s final monologue in the final season#he does not regret choosing the kid with that bright spark in his eyes#because as well as erwin fit into the cruel world of aot he needed to be released from it#armin will make the cruel world listen. he will make it BETTER.

Idk I think that if a person never reblogs anyone else's creations/posts, never talks to anyone, never even extends a simple friendly gesture to anyone, and never even likes anyone else's posts/creations
Then maybe they don't have a reason to complain about not finding any connection to anyone online and don't have a reason to complain about how 'cold' fandom is. Pot, meet kettle.
They're part of the reason why fandom feels unwelcoming. It takes zero effort to just like someone's post they made. It takes zero effort to hit the reblog button - you don't even have to put tags! - and let someone know that their posts are being acknowledged. Maybe then these people who complain about having no connection would indeed find connection
#there is an abundance of people in the [redacted] fandom who never like or reblog anything from anyone#(or they only interact with their very tiny clique)#and are the first to complain about how 'no one talks anymore' and 'why is no one interacting with my posts'#no this is not about one specific person and not about one specific group but it is about a particular fandom#and this isn't about mutuals or friends reading this#this is just me venting about irritating things i see online#misc: salted

Don't watch then? If you're going to be disappointed no matter what then don't watch
I think some people don't realize that Helluva and Hazbin are capable of good writing, that they are capable of amazing animation, good songs, and ideas. They HAVE that stuff, they've done it before, and continue to do it, not as often as before, but there are diamonds in the rough. It's the execution and vast changes in direction that fall flat, that are not good because the direction is lost, interactions become contradictory, the story doesn't seem as complex... and from a fandom standpoint, a lot of people within a fandom write fics, comics, or draw art based off things they wanted to see more of in the show. AUs to twist a direction, explore different arcs, expand a character, showcase a potential relationship- all of which the show did not. Whether a show is super good or terribly horrible, out of hype or spite, it is still an inspiration.
#im here for alastor and charlie man#i might get breadcrumbs but i miss my happy obsession with Hazbin Hotel#im dropping Helluva Boss after S2 finalizes#i heard some things i want to confirm myself are true- because those things in particular if unchanged will make me lose 100% interest#where as Hazbin Hotel may or may not be influenced by higher up the food chain kind of people#its got specific funding- specific episodes- its an officially released streaming service exclusive show#and good or bad it will expand on characters outside of a 30 min pilot#which will finally give the fandom new material to work with#and i wish to one day write a fic rewriting Helluva and maybe even Hazbin one day if i find the time and passion again#so if i can see what directions the show initially were going in#and steer them back onto those paths- then i gotta see the show to know#hazbin hotel critical

one of the parts of the fanon “PK/DA was an active superhero sometime before DT2017 and donald retired either before or because of the boys” fic premise/microgenre that i think about a lot but have never seen explored is that. chronologically paperinik could very well have been what in the in-universe Darkwing Duck television series was parodying. in a world without actual batman or dc comics to parody the DWD tv show is Paperinik fanfic that later becomes real life again. sorry to break it to you drake but you’re PK through the fandom telephone. i love it.
#gotta figure out a funny enough way to write it or incorporate it lol#text✨#donald duck#darkwing duck#paperinik#duck avenger#in related news i very much enjoy discerning the particular microgenres that emerge within fandoms and tracing down their origins#i need a good term for it and i like microgenres but it’s not exact…. but every fic heavy fandoms got one they’re fun to sus out#usually it boils down to one prolific writer making a popular story and a bunch of others copying it but sometimes it’s fully organic#and it’s fascinating….#these stories all exploring a very specific concept or trope in very different ways but can all be traced back to one(ish) source…

https://www.tumblr.com/rist-ix/749015401700229120 not you reblogging this when you ship bloom with the man who murdered her family 😭
Bloom's into ppl who slay! Hope this helps :3
#alright snark and ship wars aside i get where you’re coming from tho#if you're genuinely interested in my thought process here i would love to elaborate#which is exactly what I’ll do!#first of all! the post you linked is about headcanons#which my brain kinda wants to put into a whole different category than ships — fandom ships in particular! — but i can leave that aside#because there IS an argument to be made that relationships are an extension of characterization and personality traits#if you wanna go that route i would wanna explain that Bloom's and/or Valtor's interest in the other is in fact based on canon#(even though I don’t really think ships need to be established in the source material. make shit up that’s what fandom is for#1) the Andros episode speaks for itself. Valtor specifically tells the Trix to back off because HE wants to be the one to fight bloom#2) the episode before that he asks questions about her (and only her; even though he has more powerful enemies to worry about)#demonstrating curiosity about and interest in her#3) that same episode (or the one before; can’t remember) is their infamous first meeting#where time LITERALLY slows down as the pass each other on the stairs#they get IMPACT FRAMES#the whole color palette changes!!!#idk about u but I eat that shit up. love the drama of it all no one does it like them#I’m gonna skip all the instances where Valtor is spying on Bloom through his little scrying spell because oh god who has the time#let’s go straight to Bloom#if I had a week I would not be able to collect all the moments where she growls his name in pure fury and single-minded determination#she gets a little bit obsessed with him over the course of the season and I personally think that’s very sexy of her#Bloom is known for her tunnel vision when it comes to her past and origins and Valtor's existence fits PERFECTLY into that#it ties in neatly with her overarching story of the past 2 seasons#literally PERFECT foils#which always makes for the juiciest stories#4) she singles him out for a duel in the museum episode#5) she can literally feel his presence#6) the mere mention of his name sends her into her weird faux enchantix#of course there’s no romance in canon but there’s TENSION AND CHEMISTRY which is all u really need for a ship#all their animosity and bad blood is what makes it so INTERESTING to wonder how they COULD work. it’s the spice that makes for good fanfic!

"For particularly important things, it's always more reassuring to write them down like this." - Zhang Beihai

#my art#three body problem#3 body problem#zhang beihai#三体#章北海#i've been meaning to draw three body problem characters and actually post them on my blog for quite some time!#so if anybody wants me to draw any specific character from the series feel free to reply here or send an ask as a request!#beihai is my top favorite and he resonated with me more than i expected! i rather liked bits of consequentialist philosophical ideas in him#anyways incoming ramble/infodump in the tags about various subjects pertaining to him#all you need to know about me is that i often lurk in chinese language fandom spaces and you might see commonalities in designs#if you see fanartists draw him with the broken eyebrow and mole then that's due to the 我的三体 (my three-body) donghua adaptation!#admittedly i was introduced to the series through that adaptation years ago because it seemed rather absurd (minecraft haha) but oddly good#at least check out the third season (haven't seen the fourth one yet but that's ongoing actually) or listen to 夜航星 (night voyager)#i'm rather curious how fanartists on tumblr might tackle character designs since i mostly see the two live action adaptations here#i want to diverge my designs from any particular adaptation but my beihai design takes a lot from 我的三体!#now about beihai- i really enjoyed his characterization and i'd like to bring up a maybe unintentional parallel and foil with the eto#hopefully that's something new to add to the discussion about zhang beihai and here's what adaptations don't get about mike evans#in the book he's a character you mostly only hear about from others and he's known to be a private person#he conceals a lot of his thoughts from even people like ye wenjie + he taught the trisolarans about deceit#then his strategy to kill luo ji was to keep it low and make it seem like an accident which those obfuscations of thought parallels beihai#then evans says: “but… it's obvious now that everywhere is the same” which is similar to beihai's “it doesn't matter. it's all the same”#the contexts differ but i think they're good foils about human nature “being the same” with evans's quote being about futility#then beihai's was about how regardless of if he survived or not- someone else would be able to carry on with his work#i have many other thoughts about beihai like how chu yan's (captain of blue space) group approach with the voting contrasts beihai#while beihai tried to bear the weight of attacking the other ships in solitude- chu yan made vengeance against trisolaris a group effort#(which that action goes against how the swordholder was a solitary role instead of a group one which is neat to me!)#i'd discuss more but i think that's enough to show that i really love zhang beihai (feel free to discuss the books with me though)

!! The following is a rant and is slightly fandom critical, it’s also over-exaggerated and half joking !!
!! I’m just expelling frustration it’s not serious I’m just being silly rn so beware all ye who enter here (and also read the tags) !!
the only character that is allowed to kill an egg without repercussions is q!badboyhalo because this fandom treats him like a glorified nanny and they only care about him when they’re yelling at him to take care of their fav egg. he ain’t that egg’s government-assigned parent and he isn’t responsible for constantly keeping every egg alive but i damn well know if an egg dies on his watch, or if an egg dies of neglect he’s gonna get blamed - especially if an egg dies of neglect since he’s the only islander that cares about that apparently lmao (mostly joking). And the worst part is he’ll probably blame himself too but it honest to god is not his problem.
Bro needs a vacation - an actual one where he’s not taking care of an average of 3 eggs daily lmfao
#sorry I’m salty and I’m mostly joking I’m not actually that pressed#and plus q!Bad likes to babysit so it is His Own Doing I’m sure others would help if he asked#the thing is he’s never going to ask he’s allergic to asking for help#also this is more about the fandom anyway#they always yell on twitter and IN HIS CHAT to take care of eggs#but if he misses one sign or doesnt read the eggs damn mind he’s an unfit parent like. okay.#^^^ that last tag is specifically about how much people nag on him about tallulah in particular#‘bad is always leaving her behind i only trust Phil’ SHUT THE FUCK UP SHE LITERALLY SEES BAD AS A FATHER FIGURE#tallulah would be dead several times over if it weren’t for him#so would chayanne and so would Leo and so would half the players if we’re being honest#anyway I would be so sad if he killed an egg but he’s earned it at this point tbf#q!badboyhalo#fandom critique#i like the qsmp fandom usually but when people chat hop to tell him to wake up chayanne i get… silly

The idea of discourse around FNaF theories or interpretations is so funny to me cus this franchise has the plot foundation of fuckin' swiss cheese. Nothing means anything you can literally do whatever you want. Free reign, baby.
#sorry my respect for a story goes down the drain when they basically pull a 'everything we've told you up to now was a lie' thing twice#and as always scott cawthon can eat my shorts or whatever#this isnt about anything or anyone in particular i dont go in the fandom tag at all specifically to avoid#this kinda shit#but idk fnaf has such a soup of a story and i mean i like it otherwise i wouldnt have this blog#but one of the reasons i like it is the variety in readings in fosters cus its author didnt (and still doesnt) know what the fuck he's doin#anyway short ramble over i hope you have a nice day :]#rant#just incase ppl wanna filter this kinda stuff i doubt ill post like this often here tho#fnaf#yelling about the bear

i’m pretty surprised that you can be in a fandom without really checking the tags regularly for new content or discussions that’s pretty impressive
ive got twitter for that and twitter has shown me enough as is
#snap chats#i dont even check twitter specifically for rgg its just that my algorithms been formed that way cause friends send me tweets#on the real though jvALEKJEKL ive always. how you say. played with dolls alone#so being alone online isnt hard or anything particularly 'impressive' to me its just how i roll#ive always lived in my head i guess- with my interests that is. its fun up there vlkeajkla#i still like to hear from other people of course but for the most part im happy with just myself im not all that pressed for others#i think its also just. i have. other interests? so i dont really think i want to look at One Particular Thing that day. at least for tumblr#i MIGHT just cause thats how the day goes but i dont think 'i feel like looking at rgg art today'#whatever i see I See and that'll be that yk i love a lot of things and think of a lot of things#evidently SOME things take a hold of me more than others- or ill wanna be more public bout it at least#but thats jsut cause i just feel SO MUCH for Whatever Thing It Is At The Time that i want to share it. so then i do jvlskjs#with that in mind can i really say im 'in' a fandom when i dont particularly interact with it LMAO#again always happy to do so but im like an estranged uncle if anything#come over once a year to drop gifts off then i leave. ill still respond to holiday cards though if theyre sent#also for discussions ill usually just talk to my brother about it since he'll usually be The Main Sponge for my rambling LOLOL#god's strongest soldier i promise i try to hold back but im afraid i feel my brain physically tickle my skull#my brother always has to watch in real time me be consumed by a piece of media. like its a symbiote its really funny#cause at this point we'll meet in the kitchen and ill start like 'you know whats really funny..'#and he'll just. 'ok so who's it about today' LIKE PLEAAAASSSEEE. anyways prepare for my ninth 90 minute lecture about This Character#i also have a friend that i talk about my interests with- not all the time but enough that im like. Yeah Im Good Talkin Bout This#like the dopamine in my brain is activated JUST enough when i get to have quick short convos bout it with her#honestly maybe i should use my blacklisted main and rb ALL of my sideblog posts there#just so the people following that can Also witness me be consumed in real time <- will not do this

Sorry not sorry but literally no one's favorite blorbo has ever benefited from their fans seizing upon one single character trait or throwaway line from the source material and making that the character's ENTIRE PERSONALITY in fanfic, or even just an inescapable factor in everything ever written about them.
I get that this happens because its seen as a guaranteed way of rendering them as recognizably characterized to all other fans or casual consumers of the media, but I genuinely feel this is counter-productive as in actuality this is the very thing that leads to so many depictions feeling one-note and superficial.
Your characterizations will always benefit from digging deeper than that. Think about whatever go-to character element you were going to lead with, take a beat to follow that down the trail to additional character elements connected to it or deriving from it or butting up against it, and make THOSE your starting point instead.
#this is not aimed at any one particular fandom so much as its aimed at all of them lol#it is a universal fandom phenomenon#you could make a fandom law of thermodynamics about this#there are so many characters from so many fandoms where there's like....one specific line from the source material#thats quoted so endlessly by fics about a specific character#like they can never NOT include it#and it always makes me wince because its like I KNOW that the source material says this about that character#EVERYONE knows this and I come to fanfic to see what ELSE people have to say about them
