Zoro and Luffy are soulmates. I don't care whether they're romantic or platonic, but it's definitely one of the two. The evidence backing this statement starts at the beginning of this whole thing, where Luffy hears rumours about 'the demon of the east blue' and 'pirate hunter' and decides that Zoro has to be his very first crew member. It's hard to pinpoint just one example that fully captures Zoro and Luffy's relationship, and I think that's what makes it so special, that it's always changing, yet somehow always staying the same in the ways that matter, like, the differences between the relationship between Zoro and Luffy in the East Blue saga, versus their relationship in Thriller Bark. Because realistically, you know their relationship at its core hasn't changed, but there's the sense that it's grown, not only in importance to each party, but also in their willingness to rely on each other as more than just crew mates, but also as friends.

thinking about modern au zolu running away together. one day, luffy just says he wants to leave and the only question zoro asks is where to? they drive around aimlessly while taking random turns, not knowing the next destination themselves. dates in random cafes. sleeping in musty motel rooms. getting drunk in small bars. sometimes dancing under the stars. doing odd jobs here and there to keep a bit of money. they get married on a random Tuesday night. they return back home one day as if nothing happened, much to the bemusement of friends and family (who knew that the short note zoro had left with just the words 'be back later or never' wouldn't pacify them) (because he truly was ready to wander around aimlessly for the rest of their lives if luffy so wished)

So I’ve been thinking about the widespread belief that Luffy wouldn’t give a single fuck about a reveal of his mother. (And I’m a crocodad fanatic so I’ll be treating that like it’s canon but this all should apply to any reveal, Crocodile or not)
This isn’t me trying to hard argue against Luffy not caring about his mother, it’s a huge possibility but I just feel like people say it with a lot of unearned confidence. The belief seems to come from how Luffy reacted to the reveal of Dragon being his dad. And Luffy not caring about a father makes a lot of sense when you consider his experiences. I mean just look at the male role models in his life!
Garp comes and goes as he pleases, just showing up to knock him in the head, share a meal, and then disappears. Shanks was much the same until he left for literally the last time Luffy would ever see him to date. His male figures leave him to follow their own passions, even Ace did the second he came of age. And Luffy isn’t upset by this, he accepts this as a normal part of life. Men go off and find their adventure, that’s just what men do.
(Btw Im not trying to make this a claim that Luffy doesn’t think girls shouldn’t go off on their adventures, just that this is Luffy’s experience with his male role models and how he’d justify it)
So this is why I think it makes sense that Luffy was so uncaring about his father being revealed to him. Dragon did what Luffy would expect a father figure to do, he showed up for a minute to help, and then left unceremoniously. Luffy doesn’t need to give anymore thought to it or to Dragon.
But, this is where I begin to question the assumptions that Luffy also wouldn’t care about his mother.
Luffy has a very different relationship with the female role models in his life.
Makino was a constant in his young life, providing a safe space for him to hang around. Makino from the little we see of her was incredibly caring and maternal to a young Luffy. Even after Luffy got moved to the mountains, she’d make the effort to visit and bring him new clothes. Her kindness and motherly care extended to Luffy’s new brothers too!
Then there is Dadan who, while not proactively or overtly caring, shows how much she cares for her boys by actively protecting them when a real threat appears and always making sure to check in on them. Her contribution to raising Luffy can’t be understated.
And probably the biggest influence on Luffy, Ace himself. The man who loves and deified his mother. I have zero doubts that Ace talked about his mother to Luffy at least once. I don’t think I’m crazy for believing this could have had an influence on Luffy.
This has been my long winded way of saying I think Luffy might care about a reveal of his mother. I think he’d be curious about why his mother didn’t stick around, where they’d been, and what adventure had kept them away.
Anyway, I’d love to hear any thoughts anyone else has on this subject.

You ever think about Ace and Sabo and the way they parallel and differ?
Like both were essentially orphans looking for better father figures, one by life and the other by choice. (If you distance yourself from your parents like that you're an orphan in my book.)
They were both violent, they both are users of the flame flame fruit but they're fundamentally different in their moods and direction.
Ace is warm, he's friendly and generally helpful. His flames are orange and red and he brings light and warmth. This is a man who's core emotions are love and joy. You can see Luffy's influence on him and he manages to find a new father and family and he lights up the life of everyone he meets. People remember him for the warmth he brought into their life.
And then there's Sabo.
Sabo's colors are blue, black and white. His flames burn hotter, it hurts. It is anger it is vengeance it is fury. They might be red/orange in the anime, but only because turning them blue would take away from the connection from Ace. Sabo is a kid who took his pain and hatred at the injustices of the world and honestly them to a cutting temperature. Sabo's flame is the flame of tempering and destruction. His use of the flame flame fruit is inherently more violent and focused with the backing of his time in the resistance, his cold and calculating direction, and his willingness to just straight up do murder.
The world government/Marines killed Ace. They killed a warm, comforting fire and in response they got the white-hot flames of revenge.
It seems fitting.
Edit: I have added at least another 1k words of this rant in a reblog

It's so funny to me how Usopp can be paired with literally everyone on the Sunny, and I think that's because he's basically the Moon to Luffy's Sun, the Shooting to his Star. He's not the captain, not one of the wings, not a navigator, not a doctor, not a shipwright, he's not anything of the sort. But still, if someone has put way too much effort into the crew aside Luffy, it'd be Usopp (especially in the early days!!!). A jack of many trades, skilled in them all, mastered a few, he'll lend a helping hand while keeping his cheeky, scared, teasing persona.
There is a reason Usopp and Luffy are the same age. There is a reason both of their parental-ish figures are a part of the biggest, baddest pirates. There is a reason Luffy charges without thinking and Usopp overthinks every little thing. He is not the captain. He is not the captain. He is something just as great; a comforting reminder for everyone about themselves, a friend to all in situations of need and fun, a human. He is the human to Luffy's God. He is the human of the crew. He is that arrow, that star, that moonlit night that reminds everyone of their own growth, their own humanity.
He might scaling-wise be the 'weakest' Straw Hat, but aside being the only one who could do the job of a Sniper in the crew he is the most human. He. Is. Human. Surrounded by monster strength, he is the reminder to everyone that just like a human, they all bleed. No matter the power, the status, the situation, they're on the same boat. Literally.
He is Usopp, with the title of a God he observes the one who actually holds that power. With the title of a God he dwells in his mortality, treasures his life, for he knows he will bleed harder than anyone once he falls. With the mortal body he clings to life, snot dripping from his nose.
"Our Usopp", "Our Sniper", "Our Long-Nose", words that no doubt present themselves in everyone's heads constantly.
Everyone has a role on the crew, they're not a chain with links, they're a rope that is carefully braided together where every strand matters. Everyone has their impact on the others, with Luffy having the largest. The wings have their strength, the navigator has her intuition, the doctor has his knowledge, the shipwright has his skill, the archeologist has her wisdom, the musician has his rhythm, the helmsman has his experiences. Everyone has something, things they share with one another, like a rope contributing every bit of themselves.
Which is exactly why Usopp has the second greatest impact on everyone. Luffy brought them together, brought everything out of them. Luffy is the future. Usopp is the past. They together mold the perfect present.
The crew would go endless extra miles for all the others, because they know they'd get that same treatment. They know just how important they are. It's thanks to everyone's contribution.
And it's thanks to Luffy and Usopp that everyone knows just how one of a kind they are. Not just the two, of course, but often times they are the structure to the skeleton.
Tumblr media
"Our Sniper"
The Straw Hats are protective of everyone.
But "Our Sniper" is something that won't leave the mind so easily.
Just like all of the Straw Hats, Usopp is irreplaceable.
"Our Sniper" is irreplaceable.

“You know what this reminds me of” “DON’T SAY ZORO PLEASE”
Texting my friends at 2:00 AM and going on for hours just talking about how much I love Zoro
Tweaking because I don’t own all the Zoro merch in the world

Resumed rewatching One Piece: Baratie
Remember how Sanji doesn't fight with his hands because cooks shouldn't use their hands to fight? Sanji obviously got that from Zeff. In the scene where Zeff crashes from the ceiling (courtesy of Luffy) and is made to deal with the pink haired lieutenant douchebag and Sanji, I noticed how he punched Sanji and kicked the douchebag.
I think there wasn't much power or even will in the punch Zeff threw at Sanji (who calmed down immediately upon Zeff's arrival) because Zeff would a hundred percent take the side of his child, trust him enough to know something worth all the fuss must've happened. He kicked lieutenant douchebag pretty hard though. Wiped that smirk right off of his face. Lovely to see.
This is just another fun detail noticed through hindsight, I'd say. A way to showcase support in a relationship where the two communicate by compliments thoroughly seasoned with insults and curses along with rough housing of varying flavours to ensure survival at the sea.

Been thinking about how Crocodile was the character that made me want to start writing for One Piece. That man gave me so many thoughts. I believed it'd help get it out of my system when I wrote the "Been thinking a lot about Crocodile" fic and I was right!
So...Imagine my delulu ass thinking it'd do the same trick when I realized I liked that damn goat. It did not. It only grew. Now I have 10+ solo wips with him (mostly AUs). Inspo is great and all but what the hell happened to me?

Episodes after Marineford rant below with spoilers
So I’m just starting on these episodes following Marineford and Whitebeard’s death. And it is quite literally crazy to me to some extent (as an outsider ofc) that they all REALLY thought that killing Whitebeard would scare all these pirates away from engaging with the marines or attacking islands and the like. This man was literally the strongest man in the world, an emperor of the sea, and had a SHIT TON of territory under his watch. HE was the person pirates were cautious about (I’m guessing everyone still cautious about the other three emperors but still WB is THAT baddie). I know he drops the whole “the one piece is real” line but I don’t think that’s the main thing that spurs all these pirates to go on a rampage all over the grand line.
Through the navy’s executions of Whitebeard and Ace, you haven’t scared pirates off. You’ve inadvertently put MORE people in danger at the hands of pirates (and sometimes far worse ones) and that’s all this fucking irony that gets me with these two contrasts of pirates vs marines. If maybe you saw the bigger picture and what whitebeard’s death COULD lead to, maybe you would’ve seen his usefulness in keeping him alive. Now all they’re doing is scrambling around with limited resources after this war (from what I can tell) and at an alarmingly high piracy rate with pirates going nuts since so many of them hated WB and this is quite literally a hUGE power vacuum that many will be desperate to fill. This war seriously put the marines at a huge disadvantage and it’s clear they were not prepared for the aftermath (and only ascribing themselves to one possible effect of Whitebeard’s death)
I mean this may be obvious info to anyone else but I’m sitting here like how did y’all REALLY think that they’d be terrified of the navy after that?? IMO you’d have to have taken out all the emperors (tho granted that’s just another power vacuum which will spur on many pirates anyways)

I may be alone on this one, but when I started the Gyojin island arc and saw the main villain I was like "Oh, I like this guy, I wonder what he's going to do" and ended up a bit dissapointed tbh..
I still like Hody, but he's such a loser

Modern AU Sanuso in a semi-real world? Sign me up :)
[AU RAMBLES DOWN BELOW! Not proof-read in the slightest :D]
Tumblr media
They're married and live together with their three dogs. Sanji started his restaurant at 24, living in a small apartment with his then boyfriend Usopp. The other had been doing jobs on and off before he started working on a passion project with saved money. They were pretty broke, up until an ad-campaign Usopp animated for the All Blue restaurant blew up with teenagers and young adults, leading to great growth and success for both the restaurant and Usopp's online store.
The All Blue restaurant expanded, but Sanji didn't open any new locations. From just a restaurant it turned into a hotel, still focused on its food with other services holding up well. The interior had been designed by Usopp, as well as the exterior, according to Sanji's wishes. On the location's 20-year anniversary Usopp and Sanji hosted an event where they told the humble beginnings of the restaurant, bringing in Sanji's adoptive father Zeff to give gratitude to the man who inspired it all. Day and night alike the event was wonderful. Once the married couple reached their comfortable home Sanji allowed his emotions to flow as he fell asleep in Usopp's arms, crying tears of gratitude and giddily joyful disbelief as Onion, Pepper and Carrot (their dogs) cuddled up with them.
Whenever Sanji takes days off and leaves the restaurant in charge of his trusty right hand woman, Pudding, he makes sure to rest himself body to mind. Usopp doesn't have that priviledge, as their home is his working place.
It was only in their thirties that Sanji really realised how much Usopp did around the house, being a stay-at-home worker and all. Every corner was always clean, clothes were washed, fridge and freezer were stocked with ingredients and necessities, dogs were fed, happy, walked and bathed, everything was always in order no matter how it seemed before. It was a norm, but one day as Sanji returned home the house was a little more unkept than usual. This was because Usopp, hard as he tried, could not get out of bed for the first time since teenagehood. From that day on Sanji, who got used to their perfect house, started truly appreciating who made it perfect for them all. He tried to pull Usopp to relax with him whenever he took his days off, realising quite fast the artist couldn't lay back no matter what. Always stiff, aware and awake.
Some time after that realisation Sanji took off a month, something he did a lot of arrangements and work for to make it happen. He convinced Usopp to take that month off as well, after almost a day of debating he finally gave up as they fell asleep on their bed together. Half of that month they traveled to France, to Sanji's hometown to stay at Zeff's. The other half they spent in Thailand, trying out new things and enjoying their time. They were supposed to go visit Usopp's hometown in his home country, but he really didn't want that so instead they visited a destination recommended by a friend and frequent traveler, Nami. After this vacation they returned home, and next time Sanji was talking Usopp into taking a day off with him it didn't take long for a short cuddle-session to start.
Usopp takes commissions every now and then, but mostly he animates shorts and passion projects. He sells his creations, artwork and tailored fashion online, he is also an author as a simple hobby with some published books. He is very often stressed, even though he works for himself he doesn't take kindly to free-time. Whenever he manages to relax, if ever, he prefers a plate of Karelian pies with some egg-butter on top to be by his side as he binges a show. Chugging water and pear juice, he thinks about fresh stories and new projects even while he's supposed to be laying back. The only things that can truly make him rest his mind are Carrot, Pepper and Onion spending time with him and Sanji being his silly Sanji self (which Usopp finds unbearably sexy in a non-sexual way for some reason).
Even though they've been married for 23 years (Sanji at 50 and Usopp at 48) the only thing that's changed is majority of their priority list. It's no longer "I want to spend all my time with you", rather "I want to savor and love you for each moment I have you". They have their own lives, own groups, own events, own plans, but the smallest things will make them get all lovey-dovey with each other.
"Starboy, did you vaccuum the mats?" Sanji would ask, and the moment Usopp replies; "Yeah, I found some spare time.", the older will be with his arms lovingly placed around the younger, drowning him in light cheek-kisses and sweet whispered nothings.
"Loverboy, did you buy this potted plant?" Usopp would inquire, and the moment Sanji replies; "Yes, I thought it could fill the place of the former one.", he is already watching as the artist cares for the plant before giving the cook a long kiss of gratitude.
They met at a vocational school in Finland, where Usopp was a second-yearer at 17/18 and Sanji a first-yearer at 19/20. Sanji studied at the Restaurant-Catering side, while Usopp was forwarding Art studies. Sanji graduated in two and a half years while Usopp had to stay up until four. It was at the end of Sanji's second year that he confessed to Usopp, he wanted to seem cool and romantic but instead stumbled on his words while they were spending time at a mall. They had both moved into Usopp's own apartment at around Sanji's first year, but now as they both returned it was different. Their dumb nicknames weren't so dumb anymore, but seeing one another naked was still as awkward (and uncomfortable for Usopp) as ever. Even so they felt comfortable enough to sleep next to each other that night (in the literal sense, nothing more ).
Sanji is in contact with his siblings, who were also adopted by Zeff, to this day. Usopp sometimes looks at old videos of his biological father's, Yasopp's, Olympic Records and other sports performances. Though he keeps a picture of both an archery and sharp-shooting record Yasopp still holds the gleam in his eyes isn't exactly happy whenever that unfamiliar face enters his vision.
I love these two very dearly :) almost as dearly as they love each other 💕✌️👽✨️

Luffy's current lifespan.
It was a 2AM thought that gripped me more than I thought it should.
We know from back when he used gear 2 that it affects his lifespan, then a decade? Was taken from it after Iva's hormone treatment. Using gear 5 makes him old and he's using it in almost every fight. We knew where his life span stood after Marineford, but has there been a check and balance since? How closer to death is Luffy? They play with death everyday but we know they'll come out on top, like they have so many times. That means, when they don't come out of it on top, it'll hit really hard. Oda is very good at that too (psst remember Ace? And him getting free? And us hoping? And then him getting murdered?)
With the way Luffy's life span dwindling is acknowledged in the show more than once, it's obvious that it'll lead to something. Luffy is also the sort of guy I can't imagine living a long life but I really hope he doesn't die extremely young.

I'm currently on the Wano Arc and I cannot get over how much I love the Smile fruit idea. I like twisted shit - I don't think I've tried hiding this - so the villagers having to eat them because they were starving to death only to then be cursed with the side effects is art to me.
I know it makes sense for everyone in One Piece (even the other deranged scientists) to say how much of a devil Caesar is, but how is there not ONE person in the series who's like, "Damn that rules". Maybe there is and I just haven't come across them yet, but COME ON. Horrors have hidden beauties! I cannot be the only one who thinks this!
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
