#one piece mer au

Decided that after a month and a half of holding on to a mishanks mer au that I made up during a literal fever dream I’m going to finally post the basic details of it here (I also wrote this right after I woke up from the dream so…)

The Roger Pirates are some of the merfolk, with Roger (obviously) being the king of the sea, so that would make both Shanks and Buggy princes’

Shanks would be around 19/20, and the little guy is VERY friendly and curious, he wants to know all about the human world

A fishermen ship sails by in the area once every couple of days (I actually have no idea how fishing works so uhh) and the crew would be Beck, Yassop, Lucky, and LimeJuice, and one day Shanks gets curious enough to just…pull himself up onto the boat

I haven’t thought about who would find him first, but they would see him just rummaging around in their stuff as he tried to figure out just what said objects did and all that

The guys discuss what to do with this fucking MERMAN bc he seems friendly, but what if he’s just tricking them??? This theory almost seemed to have a bit of weight to it when Shanks starts to yank on Beck’s leg as if trying to pull him down, but once they all realize he’s just trying to get their attention so that they could hand him more objects to look at they all go “oh never mind he’s alright”

This routine happens every single time they go out sailing, which means the guys would realize that Shanks MUST live close by, right? He wouldn’t swim all the way out here just to hang out with them, would he? (He does live close by, but he would 100% swim that far just to say hello)

After many, many visits Shanks finds himself aboard once again, but this time his tail gets snagged on something which causes him to cry out in pain, getting the attention of the guys and they realize they have to give him medical attention…

But none of them really know how the hell to give medical attention to a merman, so they say fuck it and bring him back to land

They cover him up with a loose shirt and a blanket as they bring him to the local doctor (Hongo) and the conversation goes something like:

Beck: fix his tail

Hongo: this is a fish

LJ: hey! He’s part human!

Hongo: and the part you want me to fix is the fish part

Beck: just fucking stitch him up

Once Shanks is put down on the medical table of course the little guy is skittish, but he’s able to be calmed down and given nerve numbing meds so that his tail could be fixed

Once Shanks is fixed up and taken back to the ocean for a little rehydration, Beck is forced to explain to Hongo just how they have a merman with them, and Hongo is just🧍the entire time

Back at sea the others talk and then quickly realize “hold on wait a minute we never heard this fish guy speak before” so they talk TO Shanks and the little guy is just kinda like “:3?”

And that’s when they realize that Shanks just doesn’t understand a single word they’re saying, but they can tell he’s just happy to be included so they continue to talk to him and tell him stories about the fun times they’ve had (it’s really just a trip down memory lane for the guys)

Eventually it gets late and Shanks understands humans enough to know that they have to go to sleep soon so he swims back to his home

Obviously their meetings keep happening, until one day their ship gets a bit busted and they can’t go out to sea, but Shanks doesn’t know that and starts to worry and he swims to the docks to see if he can spot any of the crew

Beck, the only guy with a brain (he does not get paid enough in any universe), gets Shanks’ attention and tries his best to explain the situation to him…but eventually says “fuck it” and just takes Shanks to their boat so that he could see it for himself

After a while Shanks seems to get the message and calms down, but he doesn’t want to go back home so he just hangs out with Beck as the ship gets repaired. As Beck is just going on about whatever, it’s not like Shanks can understand him anyway, Shanks cuts him off with an enthusiastic “hi!” Beck, taken aback, goes “excuse me” which causes Shanks to happily repeat himself

With this newfound information (Shanks CAN learn “human tongue”) Beck decides to try and teach him some words (better him than the other guys, who would definitely just teach him swear words and probably some fuckass gibberish). Shanks proves himself to be a quick learner picking up the few words Beck taught him with ease, but his tongue and mouth still seem to have trouble actually getting the words out so he speaks pretty slow

Cut to when the ship is fixed and the guys are back at sea, their favorite little guy joins them on board and is just very happy to be around everyone again!

Yassop then almost has a heart attack when he hears Shanks go “happy to see you!”

Beck gets a good laugh out of the situation before he explains to everyone that Shanks can understand what they’re saying a little bit and can speak a few words in response (well, really it’s just Shanks telling them how much he likes them but shhh)

As time continues Shanks slowly starts to learn more words and starts to actually participate in conversation, and slowly he can start telling them what life is like underwater in the sea kingdom (called the “Grand Kingdom” in place for the Grand Line). He’s obviously very excited to tell his friends what his home is like bc it feels like he can ‘pay them back’ in some sort of way — as a ‘thank you for telling me about your home! Lemme tell you about mine!’

Now because I am Very Normal about mishanks…

Mihawk would be a mer in this au, keeping his title as the ‘Marine Hunter’ (now it’s a pun) as he is the best hunter in all the sea, and because of this he is basically a bodyguard for the royal family. He’s still a swordsman but instead of a regular blade it is a swordfish’s snout (the pointy part)

The moment Mihawk was brought in Shanks took a liking to him and because of it Mihawk had no choice but to teach the friendly little guy the way of the sword, and he is surprisingly delighted when he quickly finds out that Shanks is naturally skilled and has the potential to keep up with him. Because of this they still have their daily duels like they do in canon, learning new moves and pushing each other to become stronger every day

One day while on his way out for a hunt Mihawk gets stopped by Shanks and asks to come along, which Mihawk agrees but says something like “I know you’re strong but just keep yourself out of the way.” They both head out and not far from the kingdom’s perimeter they’re greeted with a kraken which immediately puts them both on edge because what is THAT doing so close to their home?

Mihawk does his best to defend Shanks but the kraken managed to give the redheaded prince a deep cut to his left arm before Mihawk is able to slice off the tendril and make it retreat. Once they were sure it was gone they rush back to the palace ((or maybe it would make more sense if it was a castle, I haven’t decided)) so that Shanks could have his arm treated (neither of their healing magic is strong enough to heal this big of a cut yet), and so that Mihawk can inform the rest of the royal family of what took place

With everything explained, Roger, Rayleigh, and Shakky all agree that this needed to be looked in to IMMEDIATELY. Shakky goes out to summon some of their forces to scope out the area, and Rayleigh leaves to go grab certain supplies while Roger explains the plan on how to keep Shanks safe (since everyone believes it was a targeted attack): Shanks and Mihawk are being sent up to the surface

Mihawk, wary, has no choice but to comply. He leaves the throne room to go and fetch Shanks who was all patched up, bringing him back to his father. Roger goes over the plan with Shanks and he is completely on board with it, excited even — he wants to fully explore the surface world now that he’s getting the chance!

Once Rayleigh comes back with the supplies needed to preform the magic that will be used, and after Shanks says his goodbyes, he and the two younger mers leave to go up to the closest beach so that the spell could be casted. Once everything is set up Rayleigh does what’s needed to be done and in just a few moments both Mihawk and Shanks have legs to walk around on land. (Although they still have their neck gills and the frills around their ears those details are small/unnoticeable enough that they don’t pose any threat of being caught)

Rayleigh gives the two some clothes so that they could get dressed and hands Shanks a pouch of human currency so that they could actually pay for things, and also a small pouch of pure gold ‘just in case’. The two younger mers say their goodbye to Rayleigh before he dives back into the water, with coordinates in hand to where they’ll be staying they venture out on to the civilized area of the surface world for the first time. And Shanks’ first stop? Going out to find his human friends

One specific detail that does need to be mentioned is that Shanks has a necklace that is extremely important solely because of the charms. The first charm looks like a normal clam shell, but if you place a drop of human blood and a drop of mer blood on to it and then the mer consumes that mix they’ll be able to understand that human’s language for a few hours; the next charm is a small snail shell and this just works as a transponder like in canon (sort of, as no snail is included); finally is a piece of coral that is basically just an SOS button — if rapidly pressed it will ping both Roger and Rayleigh Shanks’ current location

‘Mermaid magic’ definitely exists and can be used to give merfolk legs (think of it as medication; take some of the potion every so often to keep your legs; this specific spell also allows the mer to speak whatever language that the blood is from ((if the blood of someone whose first language is Spanish then that is the language the mer can fully understand)). Humans could learn mer magic if they were taught, but only ‘divination’ (observation haki) and a specific branch of ‘transformation magic’ (armament haki)

Mer magic includes:

•healing

•divination

•transformation (a couple of branches exist; organic transformation or object/tool transformation (again, the second one is just armament haki))

•soul/will magic (conqueror’s haki) ((I don’t like the name but I don’t know what else to call it))

•weather manipulation (requires strong magic to preform, which means that really only the royals can use it)

Been working on some sketches of my mer!Zoro, since he's one of my favorite designs. What started as me figuring out what his markings look like under his bandana turned into some of them ending up a bit more uh... sluttier than I imagined 😅😆

And then, while drawing these, I started to spiral and wonder what Tera and Arashi would look like as well, what traits Zoro inherited from each parent. Well, all this pondering resulted in new mer designs!

I had already designed a human form of Tera which is on my insta, so all she really needed were some tweaks, but I hadn't drawn Arashi yet so I had to come up with his from scratch. Originally I had wanted to take more inspiration from Kurogane from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles (sole reason being he and Zoro share the same English VA lol) and while I could see human Arashi wearing a similar outfit, I decided to make his overall look more distinct. I made him a blunette since a lot of the Shimotsuki have blue or blue-ish hair, and, like Zoro and Ushimaru, Arashi inherited Ryuma's huge-ass forehead 😂

Obviously, Arashi is a tiger shark, and originally Tera was going to be a leopard shark, but I ultimately decided to make her a thresher shark instead as I think the long tail matched her hair. This now makes Zoro half-tiger/half-thresher. Her eye color is a little detail I enjoy, as in fics I often find that people can't decide if Zoro's eyes are gold or silver, I prefer silver personally, but I made Tera's eyes gold in reference to that lol

I also wanted Tera to have an obvious sun theme, to go along with the Shimotsuki's moon theme. If I remember correctly, Shimotsuki Village was founded after the people from Wano drove off bandits, and Tera is the daughter of bandits, sooo... what if she was the child of the very bandits that were driven off? Maayybe there was a little Romeo and Juliet thing going on with her and Arashi? Maybe a diamond-in-the-rough bandit's daughter met the descendant of Wano's sword god and it was the greatest romance in One Piece history?!! Lol I just think it would be so funny if Zoro's parents were pretty much a Disney couple. She's the Megara to his Hercules, the Aladdin to his Jasmine, the Eugene to his Rapunzel 😆🤣🤣

i spent like three hours trying to plan what marine creatures fit the strawhats and i made the choice to try and fit fish from the nationalities Oda gave them! i succeeded… for the most part, haha.

i know moray eels don’t electrocute but this is my drawing and i get to decide!! so yes nami electrocutes other people in this au, i like to think she charges her climatact (or ocean equivalent of a climatact) with it

this is post time skip design, but i may go back and draw them from pre time skip!

finally finished Usopp’s design for my mermaid au!!

like i said in my previous mermaid au post, i wanted to match marine animals to the countries Oda assigned to the strawhats! unfortunately, Usopp doesn’t have an exact country, moreso Oda assigned him an entire continent so i had to make do

i decided to choose the African freshwater pipefish because long mouth! just like Usopp(s nose). they’re really skittish and cautious, poor swimmers but prefer to stay in large groups which i think really resembles Usopp. he may not be as strong as the monster trio, and sometimes cowardly alongside nami/chopper, but he’s very good with inventions and i wanted to kind of build off of that with the type of fish i chose for him

in this AU, he collects scrap thrown away into the ocean and also explores sunken ships alongside nami and robin (though very anxiously). i think next up will be zoro!
