Shield of Elbaf
Tumblr media
I think Guernica is plotting against the World Government.
Tumblr media
I think his eyes are a visual cue of his duplicity. I think they are meant to represent Go pieces. CP-0 plays both side while reaping he benefits.
Tumblr media
I think it was foreshadowed by Sakazuki who accused Cipher Pol of going over the Gorosei's head.
Tumblr media
Guernica undermined the Gorosei in regards to Nika. He had a role in Luffy awakening bringing Joy Boy back into the world. Which I think might have more meaning.
Tumblr media
He took the picture of Luffy in Gear 5 which became his bounty poster picture.
Tumblr media
He has said some questionable things. He told Lucci that the World Government were no better than pirates.
Tumblr media
He told X Drake he envied him for following his own sense of justice.
Tumblr media
I think Guernica's betrayal will have a big impact because he was handling the governments illicit weapons deal that the navy were seemingly in the dark about.
Tumblr media
Their last deal was apparently enough weapons for a war which is ominous.
Tumblr media
I subscribe to the theory that some of the Sheep's House orphans became mask CP0 members.
Tumblr media
I went back to see if any of the kids might match Guernica when I noticed this giant kid that went with Gerd to meet Big Mom. We never see his face and he disappears from the story.
Tumblr media
When Shanks is in Elbaf we get a scene that is a call back to the first chapter with a giant child asking to join Shanks crew. And he has a helmet identical to the mystery giant child from Big Mom's past. I think Guernica was that giant child who passed down his helmet.
Tumblr media
Giants celebrate the death and rebirth of Sun which makes Guernica's part in Luffy's awakening symbolic (if my theory is true).
Tumblr media
Again I think his eyes reveal the truth he as one eye like Odin. Elbaf is inspired by Norse mythology the king of the giants in named Loki. As to how Guernica could be a giant I think it's because of a Devil Fruit. There is a non-canon Devil Fruit called the Mini Mini no Mi which decreases size that coincidentally were eaten by non-canon giants.
Tumblr media
Speaking of giants it was revealed the New Giant Warrior Pirates are the ones who rescued Oharan books. Which apparently the navy did not see the value of.
Tumblr media
They were led by Saul.
Tumblr media
Who thought negatively about Elbaf giants. Doesn't really make sense does it.
Tumblr media
Unless there was an inside man. I think Guernica was part of the survey crew on Ohara and covered up the books survival. I think he linked up Saul with his old comrades to rescue the books.

one piece: episode 1069
I usually don't tend to watch Luffy's fights much, but today's was important, and the animation in the last two minutes or so, was amazing. And Guernica (CPO) playing the Judas role (in being a catalyst and also, possibly, having no choice. But, also, maybe we always have a choice, which is why that exchange with Drake was so good, because Drake is [finally? always?] following his own idea of justice), ...
back to the point... Guernica knowing that he's ringing his own death knell, as well as "helping" Luffy to sound his. Following orders. Oof.
**Spoilers below, anime onlies**
Then again, there were the photos so there is some hope that he's still around. And Kaidou, never able to defeat the strongest due to interference. But tactical enough to take the advantage.

poetry outlets that support a free palestine
after finding out that the poetry foundation/POETRY magazine pulled a piece that discussed anti-zionism because they "don't want to pick a side" during the current genocide, i decided to put together a list of online outlets who are explicitly in solidarity with palestine where you can read (english-language) poetry, including, except where otherwise stated, by palestinian poets!
my criteria for this is not simply that they have published palestinian poets or pro-palestine statements in the past; i only chose outlets that, since october 7, 2023, have done one of the following:
published a solidarity statement against israeli occupation & genocide
signed onto the open letter for writers against the war on gaza and/or the open letter boycotting the poetry foundation
published content that is explicitly pro-palestine or anti-zionist, including poetry that explicitly deals with israeli occupation & genocide
shared posts that are pro-palestine on their social media accounts
fyi this is undoubtedly a very small sample. also some of these sites primarily feature nonfiction or short stories, but they do all publish poetry.
outlets that focus entirely on palestinian or SWANA (southwest asia and north africa) literature
we are not numbers, a palestinian youth-led project to write about palestinian lives
arab lit, a magazine for arabic literature in translation that is run by a crowd-funded collective
sumuo, an arab magazine, platform, and community (they appear to have a forthcoming palestine special print issue edited by leena aboutaleb and zaina alsous)
mizna, a platform for contemporary SWANA (southwest asian & north africa) lit, film, and art
the markaz review, a literary arts publication and cultural institution that curates content and programs on the greater middle east and communities in diaspora
online magazines who have published special issues of all palestinian writers (and all of them publish palestinian poets in their regular issues too)
fiyah literary magazine in december 2021, edited by nadia shammas and summer farah (if you have $6 usd to spare, proceeds from the e-book go to medical aid for palestinians)
strange horizons in march 2021, edited by rasha abdulhadi
the baffler in june 2021, curated by poet/translators fady joudah & lena khalaf tuffaha
the markaz review has two palestine-specific issues, on gaza and on palestinians in israel, currently free to download
literary hub featured palestinian poets in 2018 for the anniversary of the 1948 nakba
adi magazine, who have shifted their current (october 2023) issue to be all palestinian writers
outlets that generally seem to be pro-palestine/publish pro-palestine pieces and palestinian poetry
protean magazine (here's their solidarity statement)
poetry online (offering no-fee submissions to palestinian writers)
sundog lit (offering no-fee submissions to palestinian writers through december 1, 2023)
guernica magazine (here's a twitter thread of palestinian poetry they've published) guernica ended up publishing a zionist piece so fuck them too
split this rock (here's their solidarity statement)
the margins by the asian-american writers' workshop
the offing magazine
rusted radishes
voicemail poems
jewish currents
the drift magazine
asymptote
the poetry project
ctrl + v journal
the funambulist magazine
n+1 magazine (signed onto the open letter and they have many pro-palestine articles, but i'm not sure if they have published palestinian poets specifically)
hammer & hope (signed onto the letter but they are a new magazine only on their second issue and don't appear to have published any palestinian poets yet)
if you know others, please add them on!

Guernica: Sword and Shield
Tumblr media
I have a theory that Guernica is planning on overthrowing the World Government. Here are my reasons.
Sakazuki accusing CP-0 of going over the Gorosei's head in chapter 793 to me was hinting that they would betray them in the future.
In chapter 929 we find out that CP-0 is buying weapons from Wano which is supposedly to fight pirates.
In chapter 926 arm dealers say their order is enough for a war.
In chapter 956 the Koby and X-Drake convo hint that the marines are in the dark about the weapon deals.
I know it is a common trope for the villain to create their own worst enemy but Guernica providing the photo of Luffy as Sun God Nika and it mistaken being used as his wanted poster is too much. It screams sabotage.
Tumblr media
CP-0 likes infighting among pirates since it weakens both sides. They didn't care who won in the Onigashima Raid. This was visually represented by the game of Go they were playing. I think eyes on Guernica's represent the black and white pieces in Go and is a visual cue that he can't be trusted. In chapter 1028 he basically says the World Government is no better than pirates. Similar to how Spandam convinced the Gorosei recover Pluton I think Guernica tricked the Gorosei into buying weapons from Kaido. I think his true goal is to arm nations hostile to the World Government to star a war they lose. In chapter Nami mentions their shipment of weapons but this plot point is never mentioned again.
Tumblr media
When there is a character with a mask a thought that comes to my mind is that he was already introduced. I think he is the WG official that Doflamingo was speaking to about Moria's failed assassination.
Tumblr media
And I believe he is Rear Admiral Kadar. I think there is a mystery to Kadar. After being defeated by the Sun Pirates JInbei said he was going to let them go. Turn the next page we find out his sink got ship got sunk.
Tumblr media
I think Guernica wiped out his own men and used the fight with Jinbei as a cover.
G-2 is interesting and I think there might be some secret importance to it. Ace got intel from Blackbeard there. And it's next to the Lulusia Kingdom which was vaporized and erased from history for an unknown reason.

Read this analysis. Amazing. Under a cut (super nice to do that after the official release), but click on it and read this amazing analysis of 1087 and its main protagonist).
One Piece-Mini Chapter Round-Up(Chapter 1087)
My heads not in analysis mode much right now but a new One Piece chapter came out after the most recent Void Month so I wanted to talk a little about the focus of this weeks chapter. Catch it below the cut.
Garp. That's the focus of this week's chapter. And through it, we get so much more insight into the hero of the navy than is evident at first.
A lot of my assumptions and conclusions are based on what happens next. Because the situation looks hopeless at the end of the chapter and Garp isn't smiling even though he is a D and he might die soon. SO! What does that say?
First of all, there's an assumption that Garp expects some intervention. Now, I'm gonna come out and say that I expect Coby and the other marines, as well as everyone they have rescued, to make it out. I also expect Garp to die. I also don't think Garp's death will be front page news. I don't know how it's all going to go down but I think there's a chance Garp expects Kuzan to bail them out. I don't think Kuzan will blow his cover that early. So that leaves some deus ex machina to save the new generation. Who knows what that'll be? I'm not here to speculate. What I am here to do is to talk about what all this says about Garp.
Garp is in deep denial. That's basically what his character is. At the beginning of the chapter, Commodore Brannew states that being a hero is a strength that you have to earn. And Garp has earned that. But just like Kuzan, he has also let it slip away by denying the obvious truth. The Marines are a corrupt organization that he continues to be the poster boy of by staying with them. He sees the truth of it. He also sees the truth of the matter in that those he loves and trusts choose things other than the Marines, and therefore condemn it as well. Him having to watch the execution of his adopted granson, Ace, should've been the final nail in the coffin but we see how he deals with that and all of those painful choices and decisions. He ignores it and keeps punching away. Training his body instead of confronting what all of it means. At the end of the chapter, Garp states that Justice will Prevail with a grim look on his face. Not at all like the D's we have seen in the past, smiling as they face certain doom. To me, this feels like Garp losing the way of the D's, those who challenge power. This invoking of justice at this time also brings back to mind my favourite Marine, Fujitora, and how he represents that Justice is blind. Garp wants his justice to be blind too. Thinking that if he does enough good on the side of the law that he'll tilt things in a way that'll lead to change.
It's the perfect counter to every single Marine with a strict sense of justice. Arguably they all see themselves as necessary if not even the good guys. But Garp, with his immense strength, reputation and extremely long tenure is the perfect counterpoint to them. He shows why their efforts will not pan out. Right now the only reason he's even making a dent is because he is working outside of the system. And even then, as an agent of the government, it's just senseless chaos. It's a resetting of the status quo and not real progress. To me this seems to be heading towards a tragic end for an extremely tragic character. Garp is denial and ignorance. Garp is stubbornness. Garp is one of the best foils in the series. But most of all, Garp, who's had so many of his loved ones choose a path away from him, is a tragic figure.
Being a hero is a strength that you have to earn and that justice will prevail are also concepts that link back to Luffy in a positive light. And by having Garp basically be a foil to Luffy in this sense, Oda highlights how great our protagonist is as well. A lot of people disliked the idea of Luffy being a chosen one a la the gum gum fruit/nika/gear 5. But Oda really wants to hammer in the point with this chapter that being a hero is something you earn. And something Luffy has earned with his actions as well. I'm sure Garp's end will be epic and tragic and probably somewhat heroic, but that heart of a hero that Luffy has is something Garp lost a long time ago. And Luffy shows how Justice really is blind.
Blind in that it doesn't follow laws. There's a lot that can be said about how justice is subjective, with how each admiral seems to have their own version and how Luffy's is entrenched in kindness. And how there is no cosmic right or wrong and how the law is a threat to follow rules and not at all true justice.
Garp also reminds me of so many of the older people I know and some that I dearly love and some that I wished I could love. He's stuck in his ways and because of that it's not hard to project that loved one that refuses to change onto him. He's relatble in the the way that he's someone who wants the best for you but your definition and his don't quite match up. And you see the love there but there is also the overbearingness and the expectations. I love garp. I hate garp. I love garp. He's such a great character.
One last tangent in this wildly rambling post. Garp and Koby. Koby is naive and falls for the pirates trap. But Garp realizes that it's not a fault with Koby. Koby needs to keep that innocent heart he has. It's absolutely essential that he does. And just like how Whitebeard couldn't get mad at his idiot son Squard, Garp can't let Koby take the blame and become what he has. Someone blinded to other's because they've been too busy ignoring their own pain. So Garp has only one job. And that's to get Koby off the island as the same marine he was when he got captured. He doesn't want Koby to change like Dragon or Luffy or Ace or Kuzan. More and more this becomes like Marineford and Whitebeards death. The ship splashing down. The hidden stab wound. The absolute insistence in believing in your own son. You hope that these character's learn from the past. That they change. That they aren't doomed to repeat the past because the story needs them to. You hope that this time it's different. You hope.

I wouldn't exactly say Robin is "safe" now, but it looks like Apoo and Drake will handle these guys from here!
And that's Volume 102! It took me a bit longer than I expected or wanted, but I've posted every page of Nico Robin from the most recent color volumes. What an exciting batch of pages! Robin's fight with Black Maria was not only a highlight of this story arc for me, but a highlight of Robin's role in the series as whole.
