10 Myths About Border Collies
Myth 1: Â I have small children, so I want a puppy. Without a doubt, this is the most common reason people want a puppy. Â A sweet, small puppy just seems like the best choice for sweet, small children. You know that cute Kodak commercial with the puppies climbing all over the giggling little boy? Have you ever noticed how short it is? Thatâs because they could only film for a few seconds before the welts rose, the blood dripped, and the boy began to scream for his mother. Â Puppies have needle-teeth that they happily sink into anyone who walks by. Â They also have sharp nails that scratch when they jump up -- and on little Ryan, those front feet land right around his face. Puppies leave âpresentsâ that your toddler always seems to find before you do. Â Puppies wake your children during the night. Â And a puppy doesnât know the difference between his stuffed toy and Sarahâs Piglet that she MUST have to fall asleep. And suppose you get a puppy when little Morgan is 2. Â In six months, Morgan will be about 1 inch taller and 3 pounds heavier. Â However, the 8-month-old puppy will now be as tall as Morgan and outweigh her by 20 pounds. Â And those baby teeth will have been replaced by big snappers that need to chew. Of course, puppies and small children do successfully co-habitate. Â But, in our experience, your child will go through far less Neosporin and Band-Aids with a calmer 2 + year old dog who is road-tested with children. Myth 2: Â Itâs better to get a puppy. Â With an older dog, you never know what youâre getting. Seems to make sense, except the exact opposite is true. Â All puppies are cute; all puppies love everyone. Â Itâs not until a dog hits sexual maturity that some innate behavioral problems start to surface. Â We canât even estimate how many calls weâve had from people who paid thousands of dollars for a purebred puppy, who is now a year or two old and biting people, attacking other dogs, or engaging in some oddball neurotic behavior. Â Purebred is not the same as well bred, and sometimes it feels like the disreputable breeders grossly outnumber the responsible ones. The truth is this: when we list a 4-month-old puppy, we can only guess what kind of adult sheâll make. Â When we list an 18-month-old dog, we can predict pretty accurately what kind of dog youâll have forever. Myth 3: Â If you train your dog right, heâll stay in the yard without a fence. Many people believe this, right up until the moment the dog is hit by a car, eats poison in the neighborâs garage, or is stolen. Â We insist on a fence or leash walks. Â Rescue dogs are typically either strays (which means they have a history of wandering) or owner-surrenders (which means theyâre going to go look for their ex-owner first chance they get). Â We just canât risk it. Myth 4: Â When I was growing up, we had a PERFECT Border Collie. No, you didnât. Â Trust me, he was only perfect because you were 8 and didnât have to clean up after him and be responsible for him. Â I know you believed he was perfect, but you also believed in Santa and honest government then, too. I had a perfect BC named Max when I was growing up. Â He died in my freshman year of college, and has since, in family lore, gone on to be canonized. Â St. Max. Â Bow your head when you say it. Â Everyone in my family seems to forget the time St. Max was hit by a car he was chasing. Â Or the time he bit the kid biking by. Â Or how he used to sneak in and sleep on the furniture when no one was home. Â Or the time he had diarrhea all over the hardwood floors. Â Or how he used to eat the Christmas ornaments off the bottom half of the tree. Since Iâve been an adult, Iâve never had a perfect Border Collie--but every single one of them was perfect for me. Myth 5:Â Border Collies stop being puppies around a year old. BUUUUZZZZZ! Iâm sorry. Â Try 2 or 3 for most. Â Many Border Collies donât calm down and hit their stride until theyâre 4 or 5. Myth 6: Â I want a dog without dominance issues, so I want a female. In the wacky world of Border collies, thatâs just not true. Â For starts, itâs impossible to make gender-based absolutes. Â But once you spend time around Border Collies, youâll start to notice there are plenty of hyper, dominant females out there. Â Youâll also notice lots of mellow, roll-with-the-punches males (especially after they make that all-important trip to Dr. Â Knife). It all depends on the individual dog, but donât think for a minute that a female is a sure ticket to a passive, submissive pooch. Myth 7: Â My 8 month old Border Collie is biting people. Â Heâs not lunging or growling, but he makes little nips on arms and legs. Â I canât keep an aggressive dog. The secret here is to look at what the dog has been bred to do. Â Border Collies herd. Â Itâs what they do. Â And chances are, thatâs all heâs doing to your friends and family. This is called mouthing. Â Itâs what happens when those cute little puppy bites go uncorrected. Â And if your dogâs doing it, he will continue to do it--and do it harder and stronger--until you DO correct it. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to fix in most dogs. Â Thereâre lots of tips on the internet (just search for âdog mouthingâ) and your vet can probably help as well. Â If the problem is really out of hand, you may need to call in a trainer for a few sessions. Myth 8: Â Iâm unsure about getting a rescue dog, because Iâm afraid he wonât bond to me. That sound you hear is all the people with rescued dogs falling over laughing. Â Because the exact opposite is nearly always true--your rescue dog will CLING to you. Look at it from the dogâs perspective. Â Sheâs spent the bulk of the last year on a 6-foot chain in someoneâs back yard because she committed the unconscionable sin of no longer being a puppy. Â At some point during the day, someone may remember to bring her food and water. Â The only attention she gets is when they yell at her for barking. Finally, they take her for a car-ride--dumping her in a wooded area where she can have a âfighting chance.â Despite everything, she waits there for their return or tries to get back home. Â She finds water somewhere. Â She raids trashcans and gets sick. Â If sheâs extremely lucky, she survives long enough for an animal lover to find her and bring her to the shelter. Then she sits in the loud, scary shelter run, starting to lose faith that her family will ever find her. Â The kennel people are nice, but she is one of a hundred needy dogs they have to care for. Finally, the shelter calls us. Â And you take her home. You not only bring her into your house, you give her her own bed and bowl, and a crate where she feels safe. Â You speak quietly. Â When she messes on the carpet, you donât seem to mind--you just take her outside and then clean it up. Â You feed her regularly AND give her toys and treats and Nylabones. Â She sleeps in your room. Â She may even have a big brother or sister to play with. Â She gets kisses. Â And when she goes out in the car, she always comes back.
Your rescue dogâs biggest fear is that you will spontaneously combust.
Sheâs not going to let you out of her sight for one minute. Â People with rescue dogs learn to function with a 70 pound shadow following us everywhere. That said, there are some dogs who just never learned to connect with people, but that becomes apparent very quickly--long before we place him with you. Myth 9: Â Border Collies are so smart they practically train themselves. Wrong. Â Think about it- the dog is smart, so he learns to figure things out. Â He may housetrain easily, learn basic obedience easily, but what else can he learn? My BC has learned to open doors, steal laundry, and climb a tree. Â Heâs also learned that he can entertain himself by digging or barking. Â What makes him stop digging or barking? Learning something new and getting a lot of exercise- every day. Â Not once a week, every day. Â BCs are like that super-smart nerdy kid in Chemistry class- he successfully completes the class experiment, and then blows up the lab because he wants to see how the chemicals interact. Â Super smart kids make super big messes. Myth 10: Â I don't want to have my dog spayed or neutered because it's not natural/ she should be able to have a litter/I want my children to see the miracle of birth/etc. If everyone prevented irresponsible breeding, we'd be happily out of business. Â Do not humanize your dog--no one's asking you to neuter yourself. Â Your dog will be healthier and more comfortable once s/he's shifted into neutral--and will also be a much more pleasant companion. Neutered male dogs roam less, mark less territory, and are generally less aggressive. Â Spayed female dogs avoid the messy and annoying heat cycles, and are not at risk for unwanted pregnancy. Â And both males and females are less likely to get certain illnesses. As for the miracle of birth, well, there's another rite of passage occurring to 20 million dogs a year in this country, 25% of them purebred. Â It happens every day at your local animal shelter. Â But most parents are not as eager for their children to see that.

Issues with my dogâs veterinarian
I have used the same Vet for my Cat for about 4 to 5 years now. He was declawed there, he had all his shots there, etc. So when I got a dog, I took her to them for all of her shots, and eventually got her spayed there. I got my dog spayed last week, 11/10. The first night she was sick ALL night, so I eventually called their emergency line to talk to a vet doc. and was called back by someone who seemed very tired...possibly woken from sleep. They asked why my dog was awake at 4 am and not sleeping after her surgery, well I donât know...she was vomiting every hour...maybe thatâs why? Anyways they told me to give her ice chips and feed her the next day and see how that goes...
Things got better with her eating but this week she started having very loose stools. Not really diarrhea since she wasnât going ALL the time. But loose, I thought it was the medicine from her surgery so I asked people I knew with dogs and they said it happened to their dog too, just give it a few days. My dog has been eating okay, drinking okay, and has not been messing with incisions and she is healing fine âdown thereâ. But the loose stools turned into Diarrhea today. So I called her vet to ask if this was normal or not. And what to do...
First off... they answered and kept putting me on hold. I finally spoke to someone and they asked me if the medicine they gave me earlier this week helped....WHAT MEDICINE? I let them know they must have me mistaken for someone else because my dog didnât come home with medicine. He said I was discharged with medicine, I said...NO my dog was not given ANYTHING to take home. He then finally asked my phone number and looked up my case for my dog, while putting me on hold again. No big deal - people make mistakes.
But then they got back on the phone and said âItâs been a week, so the diarrhea canât be from the spaying she had done here, you will need to call another vet to make her an appointment with them to check her out.â I was like....um? What? This vet does normal visit for wellness checks, shots, and spays and neuters. Why send me out for DIARRHEA? I expected them to make me an appt and just get a stool sample but apparently they donât want to see my dog anymore.
He just said, I can give you some names of some local vets. The diarrhea isnât from our procedure...
So he gave me some numbers. He did finally ask if she had eaten anything weird, I said no. He asked how I knew. I told him since her surgery she has been with me, so if I go to one room she follows. He said maybe she is stressed from being with me and told me to leave her alone. I let him know that since she is still a puppy I tend to be in the room with her or in a room next to her, but that she does get alone time and hasnât been stressed by me before her surgery. So I donât think that is what is causing her diarrhea. I gave up on this vet after this conversation and hung up letting him know that I will be scheduling her with another vet from now on.
So I called another vet, and we are scheduled for Monday to see them for an evaluation and to give them a fecal sample to see why she has diarrhea. I let them know that my vet told me to go to them for reasons unknown. And they said they would get me in asap. I feel bad for my dog and I am going to watch that her eating doesnât get worse. She has been eating fine and drinking normally. Itâs just she keeps having horrible wet poops, today it ran down her legs and I had to call my husband to bring me a towel to clean her up with before I went inside the house! Donât worry if it gets any worse or her behavior changes before her appointment, I will take her to their emergency clinic. But I am just so mad at the services I got at my old vet. I have NEVER had an issue before now with them. My cat has gotten surgery with them before and has done fine. But who knows..... I put in a complaint about the care my dog has received to this point. Her surgery is healing and I donât know why she continues to have diarrhea. I just want her to feel better and to be safe... I didnât yell at the vet guy on the phone at all. I work for healthcare and I know there are issues... but I didnât expect to be pawned off to another vet.
I told my friend about this and she said it was weird they told me to go somewhere else. She gets her dogs care there too at the same vet and has NEVER had an issue with them before! Me too until now.
I just feel like someone really just didnât care today. So thatâs my day. Monday I will take my puppy to the new vet, and take in a fecal sample like they asked for her some how (I am 31 weeks pregnant) so I have to try to catch her poop somehow in the morning and refrigerate it.....yay? I was suggested by a friend to give puppy some rice to help stop her diarrhea in the mean time, so we are doing that. But if she has a bug or worm from going into her old clinic I will be complaining more that THEY didnât offer to fix it.
Just so sad that they didnât care today.... I love my puppy. I was so mad afterwards for her.

Responsibilities of owning a pet!
Even though almost every animal can cause allergies; the proteins in their urine, saliva, and dander can act as allergens and cause an allergic reaction in some people, having their best interest at heart because another way that owning a pet can help teach a child to be more responsible. This is when a parent gives the child pet related chores that are of course age appropriate. Even a three-year-old can fill a water dish and older kids can clean the litter box and give a dog a bath. Owning a pet means making decisions and owning a pet is a privilege which should result in a mutually beneficial relationship. The benefits of pet ownership com with responsibilities like: Committing to the relationship, selecting the best pet suited to the home environment, and it requires investment of time and money. It can be tempting to go out and buy a pet but are you ready to commit? Pets are a financial commitment. Some pets can be low cost and some pets can start at a low cost but steadily cost you a small fortune. Over the years, my dog had been easy maintenance. He is a small dog, so his food intake was small, and he rarely had to visit the vet. However, he is almost 15 and now elderly and sick. His medications cost an arm and a leg every month. Like humans, animals get sick regardless of age or lifestyle. Can you afford to shell out the money, as well as time for your pet? This is something that needs to be considered. Â Pets can be a time commitment While some pets are said to be low maintenance they still need some time committed to them daily. Feeding, grooming and exercise are just a few things to consider when it comes to the daily care of a pet. If you are constantly traveling or spending more time at school or work then at home, it might be a good idea to hold off getting a pet for the time being. It can become a burden to others if you are constantly asking them to pet-sit your animals while you are away. Maybe when your life becomes more settled would be the prime time to get a pet. Pets are a long-term commitment. While a pet may fit your lifestyle right now, will they next year? In 5 years? In 10 years? I understand the desire to get a pet, but accepting that animals are a long-term commitment is necessary. Numerous people I know who had pets had to give them up later on down the road because they could no longer care for them. They had that pet while in school but once they graduated and moved to a new city or apartment were unable to take their pet with them. It is a decision no one wants to make, having to part with their beloved pet, either temporarily or permanently. Like time commitment, perhaps you should wait until your life is a little less hectic. How do I know what pet fits me and my lifestyle? When it comes to choosing the right pet for your lifestyle, its important to consider factors such as energy level, dietary needs, required training, common medical issues, and proper environment. These can all have an impact on your pets health and happiness, as well as your ability to properly care for them. Energy level, A cat or dogs energy level can be a critical determinant of whether your lifestyles will be compatible. Higher energy pets are for those who are very active, lower energy pets are best for those who love a lot of downtime like sitting on the couch and watching tv. Most dogs require 30 minutes to two hours of exercise per day, though this depends on the breed, age, and overall health of the dog. While cats can spend as much as 14 hours a day sleeping, engaging them in moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes per day is usually recommended. Temperament is also a factor in what pet is best for you. Like people, all animals have unique personalities and temperaments that are displayed in their habits or behavior. While some dogs are more outgoing, social, and crave attention, others can be more laid back, calm, or even shy. It is very important that the pet feel comfortable in their new environment that they will live in. special needs: dietary and training, Also, consider special dietary requirements based on age, size, and breed, as well as any formal training requirements. While many common breeds of dogs and cats require minimal or basic training, some may require more advanced or specialized training. This is particularly true with hunting dogs, service dogs, or high-maintenance breeds that have an intrinsic desire to work. Medical issues also is a factor because like us pets will become ill or injured so you will need to be able to afford any medical bills at any time. Four costs in owing a pet; The study also found that an astonishing 40% of households reported owning multiple types of pets, meaning that pet expenses for those households were even higher. Keep in mind, for instance, that based on current averages if you own both a cat and a dog, youre looking at about $2,900 a year in expenses. recurring medical costs for dogs averages $235, or about $160 for cats. Its easy to be placated with a false sense of security when you consider these numbers, but if for whatever reason your pet gets sick, their health expenses will likely escalate. Diagnostic testing can easily run you over $1,000, for instance, and even initial health-care costs, such as spay and neutering procedures, can cost between $45 and $135 for dogs, depending on the vet clinic you visit and the weight of the dog, though prices as high as $300 are not uncommon. For cats, the procedure is still fairly expensive; about $50 to $100, and for female cats, which need to be spayed, you can expect to pay $100 to $200. pet food as one of the largest annual expenses for pet owners, with food costing about $239 a year for dog-owners and $203 a year for cat-owners. If youre buying premium food or you plan on adopting a large-breed dog, these expenses may be still higher, however. California Natural, for instance, a well-respected grain-free brand of dog food runs $55 for a 30 lb. bag. Investing in obedience training classes and a dog walker (if youre unable to be home enough to walk your dog yourself) will do wonders for your relationship with your dog, and without these things, you could find yourself with much more dog than you bargained for. Basic obedience training classes (such as puppy school) generally run about $40-$125 a week for 4 to 8 weeks of one-hour training sessions. Obedience training is a necessary expense unless you feel you are experienced enough in handling and raising dogs to go it alone. Be forewarned, though, failure to properly obedience train your animal can often result in behavior problems, which will cost you even more in the long run, as youll need a trainer or behaviorist to help you to correct your dogs bad habits. In other words, be prepared to invest in puppy training before you get a dog. Boarding and kennel costs are also big expenses, and as a result, pets might limit your ability to travel as easily and as freely as youre used to. Finding pet-friendly accommodations if youd like to take your pet with you, too, can be a significant challenge. Kennels charge anywhere from $15 to $25 a day (at lower-end establishments), to between $22 and $55 a day for higher-end facilities. Before you just go out and buy the first pet you see consider all the right possibilities. Are you really committed to having this pet for their entire life? Are you committed to the responsibilities they come with? Also consider picking the best pet that is well suited for your lifestyle and the right environment. Another is are you ready to invest in a lot of time taking care of the specific pet and how much it will cost in to taking care of the pets best interest? If yes, then do some research and hope that you all have the best life. Work cited: "5 Big Reasons Owning a Childhood Pet Inspires Responsibility â Central Pet Care." You can begin teaching the basic five commands described below when the puppy is 12 to 16 weeks old. Always keep training sessions briefâjust 5 to 10 minutes at a time, at firstâand always end on a positive note. If your puppy is having trouble learning a new command, end the session by reviewing something he already knows and give him plenty of praise and a big reward for his success. If your puppy gets bored or frustrated it will ultimately be counterproductive to learning. You canât be with your puppy every second of the day and your puppy does need lots of rest, usually around 16 hours a day. When you and your puppy need a break, send your puppy to bed somewhere that will limit any roaming accidents. For puppies who love to chew things like power cords, this is a safety precaution that can stop your dog getting into mischief when you canât watch them. You can also switch to other games like fetch or tug of war. With fetch, itâs important to teach your dog to âlet goâ or âleave itâ on command, so you can remove something from his mouth without him getting aggressive. Likewise, with tug of war, you want to make sure the game doesnât get too rough, as this can encourage aggressive behavior and also isnât good for your dogâs mouth. Puppy socialization is a crucial period for all puppies. It is the time where you build a close bond with your puppy and expose him to all the world has to offer. Pet Rescue Nightmare
A Middle Island pet rescue has been accused of selling sick puppies, costing new pet owners over $6,000 in vet bills. The âFriends of Freddieâ pet rescue, located at 206 Middle Country Rd. in Middle Island, has been operating on and off for over a year, adopting out dogs and puppies, who vets say are sick and unfit for adoption. Families looking to adopt their new furry family member are met with horror as they incur thousands of dollars in veterinary expenses after completing the adoption process. In the month of March 2017, at least eight puppies died due to the rescue ownerâs negligence. These accusations have sparked suspicions from Brookhaven town residents, and those who have adopted sick animals from this shelter before. Kristen Addiss, 27, and her boyfriend, Mike Levi, adopted a puppy on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 from Friends of Freddie. The couple named their puppy âLayla.â Unusual coughing and labored breathing prompted Kristen and Mike to contact Patchogue Animal Hospital, the veterinarian affiliated with the rescue. âThe Veterinarian diagnosed Layla with kennel cough, something that we were told is common in puppies and it was nothing to be concerned about,â stated Addiss. With multiple vet visits back and forth, Addiss and Levi were given the green light to take Layla home. Addiss stated, âWe were told that the cough would get worse before it got better and that she was looking better.â Relieved, Addiss and Levi took their puppy home for the weekend. It was during the next week that the couple noticed Laylaâs condition worsening. Concerned, they took Layla to Island Veterinary Hospital in Coram for a second opinion. After a series of X-rays, Layla was diagnosed with pneumonia. Laylaâs one week checkup led to an unexpected discovery, the young pup had Canine Distemper Virus. After hospitalization, and being given a 50/50 chance of survival, Addiss and Levi lost their 11-week-old Layla on March 5, 2017. While checking the vet records provided during adoption, Addiss and Levi discovered that Layla had not received a vaccine for Canine Distemper prior to being adopted. Tracy Butcher, a volunteer rescue transporter from Ontario, New York, explains the difference between shelters and rescues; âShelters are subsidized by the town or municipality, and rescues do it all on a volunteer basis, often having to do fundraising to offset the costs of the dogs they rescue.â Shelters are regulated by the township and are supported by tax dollars, providing fixed adoption fees. Rescueâs run on donations and volunteers. Butcher stated, â$450 adoption fee for puppies is slightly high, but not completely out of line. In most rescues, dogs are spayed/neutered, have all their shots, and are microchipped.â Butcher adds, âThey should have been vaccinated, [against] distemper definitely.â Addiss explained, âOur family veterinarian filled out paperwork for a pet lemon law stating that Layla was unfit for adoption. Under these circumstances, we approached Friends of Freddie hoping they would do the right thing for us and reimburse us with what they owe us under the New York State pet lemon law. When they found out our vet bills were approaching $6,000, they said they wouldn't pay us and told us to take them to court.â Shortly after this encounter, Addiss and Levi discovered that they are not alone in their fight. Kenneth Harsch Jr. of Wading River also adopted a sick puppy from Friends of Freddie. âHe was coughing so much I got concerned about his breathing. I brought him to my local vet to be looked at because I didn't trust the place she wanted me to go. My vet did a physical exam and X-rays and determined he had advanced pneumonia,â Harsch stated. âI spent the next few days home with him taking time off of work. He got worse. I took him back to the vet and he told me to get him to an emergency hospital right away. He had advanced pneumonia, kennel cough, and worms. I was told he was de-wormed,â said Harsch. Nearly $6,200 later, Harschâs Chihuahua-Daschund mix, Kody, made a full recovery. Ken explained, âWhen you see the look in a 10-week-old puppies eyes it breaks you down. He spent the next 4 days in ICU. Luckily he lived and is now a happy healthy puppy. The emergency room vet and my regular vet both wrote me unfit for sale letters saying the dog was so sick he should have never left their facility.â Concerned about other pets in the shelter, Harsch contacted the rescue founder, Barbara Sanelli. âI've called Barbara a few times confronting her about adopting sick dogs and she screamed at myself and my mother-in-law, calling us horrible people for questioning her and disputing the credit card charge,â explained Harsch. âI also had to call 4 times before deciding to go down there face to face to get the vaccination records for my dog. She couldn't find them and just jotted some stuff down on a generic photocopied paper and said âhere's what we gave him.ââ Amanda Stein, of Miller Place, adopted her puppy âLucyâ from Friends of Freddie. âShe was super sick for a while. [She had] Giardia, eight parasites, kennel cough and an upper respiratory infection. Sheâs been on tons of antibiotics, we are at the vet once a week and sheâs almost better,â Stein explained, âWe are one of the few lucky ones. Everyone else got scammed and ripped off way worse by them.â Courtney, a licensed vet tech at Farmingville Animal Hospital, explained, âGiardia are protozoan parasites. Dogs get it from drinking stagnant water. Itâs pretty common in ponds and bodies of water like that. Giardia and coccidia can also be transmitted from dirty water bowls. They can get it from stepping in feces and then stepping into their water bowl.â Christyn Malone, a registered nurse from East Setauket, spoke about her experience adopting âJaxâ at Friends of Freddie. âJacqueline, the vet tech, cleared him to go home with us, right in front of me. Â She checked all the appropriate boxes saying his lungs were clear and his respirations were normal,â said Malone. When Malone took Jax home, she noticed something off about his breathing. âMy husband took him to the vet the very next morning after we got him. The vet diagnosed him with severe pneumonia and parasites, saying he probably had kennel cough weeks ago, but was never treated properly,â Malone explained. After spending more time at the hospital than he did at home, Jaxâs constant seizures couldnât be controlled. Jax had to be euthanized. It was later that day, Jaxâs blood work confirmed he was positive for distemper. âIt is criminal that these people are allowed to adopt out these dogs knowing they are as sick as they are,â Malone adds, âThey are killing animals and breaking familiesâ hearts.â Brookhaven Town Supervisor, Ed Romaine, stated, âI shut down Friends of Freddie a year ago due to code violations. I know we closed this facility down once before for lack of a Certificate of Occupancy and other related code issues.â Brookhavenâs citizens advocate, Kevin Molloy added, âAs far as animal welfare goes, anytime youâre going to be doing anything with animals, it comes under state law, New York State Agra-Markets [Agriculture and Markets] law. I would check with local state legislature because youâre talking about a lemon law, and I would speak to Suffolk County Department of Consumer Affairs.â Rob Calarco, Suffolk County's 7th district legislator, states; âCertainly, we do not want illegitimate operators maltreating these animals and preying on folks who want to do the right thing and adopt a dog. Suffolk recently adopted some regulations as they apply to pet rescues to try to address those kinds of issues. We will refer the matter to our Consumer Affairs to see if any of our pet store and pet shelter regulations could be used to help investigate and shut down this operation.â Currently, pet shelters and similar non-profits, such as rescue organizations, are exempt from the New York Pet Lemon Law. Consumer Affairs defines a pet dealer to be anyone who sells more than nine dogs to the public for a profit in one year. The laws regarding pet rescue regulations are set to change on May 22, 2017. On April 14, 2017, Brookhaven Town fire marshal condemned the building that Friends of Freddie is located in. According to Ed Romaine, âA number of violations were noted. Also, the space was lacking a Certificate of Occupancy. The facility was closed to the public but to avoid chaos, the dogs were allowed to remain until other arrangements can be made. The town has no authority to enforce animal welfare laws. Also, Friends of Freddie can work to clear up these violations.â Caitlin Minieri, a volunteer for Friends of Freddie, stated that the rescue does not turn away dogs. âWe get them from kill shelters and we basically get the question: which ones do you want to live? How do you answer that? So as long as we have the room, weâll take them,â explained Minieri. In a statement made on April 15, 2017, Minieri said, âWe probably have about 80 adult dogs right now.â Minieri added, âWe get them here and we quarantine them and we hold them, but thereâs only so long we can hold them for. Weâre a handful of volunteers.â Barbara Sanelli, founder of Friends of Freddie Animal Rescue, offered an explanation as to how this may have happened. Sanelli stated, âUnfortunately dogs from the south came up that must have been harboring a disease. We had the dogs for many weeks and then adopted them out. Unfortunately, the disease broke after they went home, probably because of the new environment. Itâs a stressful environment, their immune system lowered and they got diseases. It manifested. Do we like that? Absolutely not.â Dori Scofield, President of Save-A-Pet in Port Jefferson Station, makes this statement; âI decided we needed legislation to regulate animal rescue. I never thought I would have to have legislation regulate common sense, honestly.â Scofield and her team took the initiative to contact Suffolk County legislators to include rescues and non-profit organizations in the animal welfare laws. âWe got a really good piece of legislation that was passed in Suffolk County, Iâm really proud of it. So now, all of us, myself included, if we bring in dogs from out of state, they have to be quarantined, they have to have a certain amount of space, they have to have a certain amount of exercise, they have to be vaccinated, stool checked and microchipped. So all of the 501c3âs in Suffolk County, hopefully have received an application for a permit to have a rescue, and they will have to comply with all of these simple regulations,â Scofield stated. Save-A-Pet was founded in 1994 and is a no-kill animal shelter. Scofield explained how she has been able to successfully run this non-profit organization for 23 years; âYou canât overcrowd. Overcrowding breeds disease. We canât all cram our shelters just because we canât say no. You can only take in what you can care for properly, and if you canât care for them properly, youâre doing a great injustice to the ones you already have.â The victims have sought legal help to close down Friends of Freddie for good. The Attorney General is conducting an investigation to handle the consumer fraud element of this rescues operations. After meeting with the Attorney General, Stein explained; âThe end goal of the investigation is to permanently put a stop to Barbara for good once she is found guilty.â Addiss, Harsch and Malone are among many victims involved in a class action lawsuit filed against Friends of Freddie, by Miller Place attorney Vesselin Mitev. âOver 60 other people have contacted my firm and come forward and said that they were in a similar situation, so I decided that a class action was the way to go,â explained Mitev. Harsch makes it clear why he feels so strongly about exposing Sanelli, stating; âThis place has got to be shut down for good, or at the very least until they can conduct themselves in a manner that is nothing but beneficial to these animals. After all, they have no voice, no choice, and are completely at her mercy.â Stein and other victims also plan to seek the District Attorneyâs help to ensure Friends of Freddie doesnât open up a new location. Local rescues, such as Almost Home in Bohemia, Save-A-Pet in Port Jefferson Station, and Happy Tails in Smithtown, have stepped up to take in some of Friends of Freddieâs dogs after the recent condemning of the building. Multiple dogs remain, as Sanelli hopes to find them their forever home, instead of continuing their life in another shelter.

Update on the puppy
April 14, 2017 Â So this is the first time I am writing this year. Â Actually, I started writing an entry a month ago but never got around to posting it. Â
So, about the new dogâŚ.
Ok, I do feel kind of guilty that we did not adopt a rescue dog. Â In fact, I guess I sort of got her from what would technically be a backyard breeder. Â But they are my neighbors and they did have the parents tested for genetic health issues before breeding and they did give the puppies all the veterinary care they needed and they did have the father neutered after breeding him. Â The parents are indoor dogs and the puppies were whelped and socialized indoors so it is not like I bought her from someone who bred pups in their backyard doghouse just to make money. Â They are selectively bred sound dogs that would make good pets.
Anyway, here is how the story goesâŚ
So I have been volunteering at the Humane Society for over 4 years. Â Every week I would check the dogs to see it they had one that would be a good match for my family. Â I also fostered some dogs from two different rescue groups and checked web sites like Adoptapet and Petfinders regularly.
I really wanted an Irish Setter mix.  My first dog was half Irish setter and I love the look and personality of Irish setters. But I did not want a purebred because I donât want to deal with the issues I had with my last purebred dog. However,  Irish setters are not very common here and now.  After a year or two, I accepted that I was not going to find a setter mix and decided to just look for a medium-sized mixed breed that met our family needs. But we really do not have many homeless dogs around here. Many of the dogs at the shelter get sent in from other parts of the country.
So, last October I was at the Humane Society and saw a dog that looked perfect. Â She was a 35 pound mix who looked like she might be a combination of sheltie, corgi, and some kind or retriever. Â My older son was volunteering at an event that night and I told him about this dog. Â
But my son, who loves tiny dogs, discovered another dog, a male miniature pinscher.  He put a hold on him instead.  So the next day we made an appointment to go see him, but he was not right for our family and when I asked about the dog I wanted, they told me she had been adopted already.  So, I went home feeling really bummed out. I felt like I was never going to get another dog and that one right for our family did not exist.
A few hours later, I happened to look out the bathroom window and saw an Irish setter running around loose.
So I went out and tried to help the owner catch her. It turned out the owners live just around the block from us. Â Their daughters were students of mine eons ago and we had actually met these neighbors about five years earlier after my younger son threw a rock through their garage window. Â Â It turned out the dog was half Irish setter and half golden retriever. Â I asked where they got her and that I had been wanting an Irish setter mix for years. Â They informed me that they currently had 11 puppies.
So I guess it was meant to be. Â My grandmother told me it sounded like God had planned it out for me. Â
So, the mom is half Irish setter and half what I assume is field bred golden because she looks like a pure setter. Â The father is an English cream golden retriever who comes from show lines. They also told me English creams tend to have a lower cancer rate than other goldens. I think their last golden retriever died of cancer (I know cancer is very common in goldens) so I am guessing they got two dogs whom they hoped would live longer, healthier lives. Â
Anyway, we went over to meet the puppies and as soon as I texted my older son a picture he said he would be fine with a bigger dog. Â
Also, I never had a puppy before. All of my dogs had been at least 6 months or older when I got them. Â I decided that if I was ever going to have a puppy, now was the time, since I was only working part time.
I wanted a female and they had four females available. One was red, but she was not only one of the larger pups, but she had already figured out how to escape her enclosure. Â I did not want a dog that was too smart. Â The two smallest and calmest female pups were pale golden blonde. Â We could not decide between them, but someone else wanted the smallest, so we got the second smallest. Â I did not bring her home until she was 10 weeks old because I wanted to make sure she learned bite inhibition from her mom and siblings. Â Â I did pay $600 for her, which is a lot, but she had all of her vet care and declaws removed and was wormed. Â Actually, adopting a dog from the Humane Society is over $300 (although that includes spaying and neutering) and most rescues charge about a $400 adoption fee and purebred dogs run about $1000 these days. Â So the kids did not get a lot for Christmas this year, but they got a dog.
The family had no problem finding homes for 11 puppies. In fact, people continued to call and ask if they had more. Â I guess in some ways things are better than they used to be. Â
Another weird thing: a year or two ago I had a dream that I had a dog that looked just like our puppy does now. Â In the dream her name was Tailey. Â I wanted to call her that, but the boys did not like it. Â My older son wanted to call her Lily or Luna, but I used to have a cat named Lily and Luna is a really common pet name right now. Â I came up with a list of about 40 ideas, but no one liked them. I like old-fashioned pet names and really unusual, creative names. Â My son finally suggested Kirby, after a video game character. Â I found it cute, so I agreed. Â I know technically Kirby is a boy name, but nowadays half of the most popular girl names used to be boy names. Â

Being Alone, Bones, and Cats: 40476-9 years old, 57 bs Star uor Sweet, scared, gentle, kid& dog priendly, housetrained - Spayed &Ready 2 Go Home! At Brooklyn ACC hoping for Fresh New Beginnings! o: **** TO BE KILLED - 9/8/2018 **** We made a wish for our Star! We want her to finally know love and care in her life. This forlorn, 9 years young, deserving lady has served a home proudly, though the love was clearly not reciprocated. She is in need of tender care and a true friend. Naturally after living a less than kind life, to then be dropped off at a high kill shelter, she is tragically afraid of what the near future will bring, Knowing it simply cannot be a happy future, considering the environment and lonely kennel. Seeing her face, filled with hopelessness and defeat, one must wonder how she came to be named Star? A star is bright, hopeful and vibrant. These traits are also found deep in one's heart, and we know this lovely soul would bloom with the chance of a real life, shining brighter than any other when we look up to the sky. We also feel with a little TLC, she will make any family proud. The cards might be stacked tightly against her, especially being it is the weekend, and Brooklyn center housing her. But we will still make this wish, and hope with all our might that someone will save this lovely Star tonight! STAR@BROOKLYN ACC Hello, my name is Star My animal id is #40476 I am a desexed female tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center The shelter thinks I am about 9 years old, 57 lbs Came into shelter as owner surrender Sept. 2, 2018 Reason Stated: NO TIME for animal BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY No children (under 13) Star has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. She has been observed to growl and whale when being approached in the care center. In the care center Star displays concerning behaviors (stiff body posture, whale eyes and growling) when being approached. Once she entered the assessment room she avoided the assessor and showed no interest, but when attempted to be approach and coaxed thatâs when she began to growl with whale eyes. No more handling was conducted due to her behavior displayed in the assessment room. Summary (1):: According to Star's previous owner, they would sometimes babysit other dogs of various sizes and breeds and Star was relaxed and gently played with them. Here at the Care Centers, Star briefly interacts with the other dogs. She mostly explores the yard, occasionally checking in. The Behavior Department recommends that Sta be placed in a home with resident dogs that are respectful and matches her calm demeanor. All introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. 9/4: When off leash at the Care Center, Star is introduced to a novel male dog displaying nervous body language, low tail and ears back. She explores the pens, keeping to herself and briefly greets him at the end of the session. 9/6-7: Star briefly greets a female dogs then explores the yard. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Star is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. New hope partner: Star has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Star is reported to have frequent accidents in the house, and appears not to have been housetrained in the past. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Star has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, she displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because she is so uncomfortable, Benny does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to freeze and growl upon direct contact.
