Arthur hasn't had any accidents in the house in almost two weeks now! Yay buddy. He's pretty good at asking to go out and we're pretty good at figuring out that that's what he's doing.
We've started walkies. Bit early maybe, but ... He's a busy boy and he needs to get out lol. My vet did say it was more important for him to get exposure and socialization and exercise than be fully vaccinated. Everything is still frozen outside so there's less risk anyway. We also carry him into pet stores and let him meet whoever wants to pet him.
The biting is bad atm. He will start teething in another week or two and then it'll be worse lol. We'll get through it. I just bought a bag of bully sticks. And I got him a filled hoof the other day that he LOVED so I think I'm going to buy more and freeze wet food and stuff inside them and he can have either a bully stick, hoof, or frozen KONG in the evening.
Training wise ... I gave up on not teaching sit, so sit is going well. Stand/stack is a work in progress, same with down. He knows a nose-to-hand touch. Tom is teaching him to give paw and spin lol. He knows his name, and will 80% of the time come when called.
The girls still hate him. He's determined to piss them off instead of backing down when they tell him off. He barks back at them. Dummy. Not a submissive boy. We use a barrier to separate the house so he can play in the living room and the girls can nap in the dining room ... He keeps getting through the barrier. We have tried several set-ups. We just got another gate though so I think that will work. We already have two permanent gates in our house (blocking off the kitchen and the front door - sorry management is easier than training when there's 3 dogs lol). He does go outside to potty and go on walks with the girls and they are more tolerant of him outside, so that's something. They don't like puppies, I think they'll get used to him when he grows up a bit and finally learns to leave them alone.

Still Kicking
I thought I’d better post something so that you’ll know we haven’t succumbed to the scary virus.  Seems like there’s not a lot of good news anymore, if it’s not the pandemic it’s the murder hornets - so I’ll share that we’re fat and happy and still kicking here on the Pullen spread.  I can’t seem to stop cooking, so we’re eating A LOT.  I’m staying busy with gardens, crafts , and books and the mister is working from home just as he did pre-pandemic.  Not much has changed around here except that Home Goods misses my money. Although we’re content here at our place, I still worry.  I worry about the rest of our family, I worry about the headlines screaming about everything from food shortages to a deadlier second wave of coronavirus.  I’m usually not a big worrier - I analyze the issue and decide whether or not I have any control over it.  If I do, then I decide what I can actually control and make a plan (and usually a backup plan, or two).  If it’s something that I have no control over, then what’s the use of worrying?  When my kids were stressed about something I’d ask them, “What’s the worst that could happen?  And what will you do if that happens?”  It’s amazing how much your burden eases when you have a plan.  But this stupid virus has offered few answers, no timeline, and a fraction of the country is willing to kill the rest in order to be able to dine in at their local tavern or get their hair done. Dummies.  As always, whatever is happening in my life reveals itself in my skin.  When all is well my skin is glowing.  When I’m stressed my skin goes into panic mode.  Right now I have a zit on my chin big enough for a birth certificate.  Now, my version of stressed really just means overthinking. This situation is hard for someone who likes to have her ducks in a row.  I don’t even know how many ducks there are.  So I guess I’ll just keep doing my masked grocery pickup every week or so and hope that the majority of Americans use some common sense so we can get ahead of this stuff.   My skin would appreciate it. We were supposed to visit our sweet grandgirl in April but that didn’t happen. We have a really fun vacation on Prince Edward Island planned for September, but it’s probably not going to happen either.  I’m not sure Canada will (or should) open its borders to us by then.  We may end up spending vacation watching travel videos and trying foreign recipes.  We can probably tour a lot of places virtually - maybe a walk through the Louvre followed by some crepes?  I know, silly stuff to complain about.  Considering what so many are dealing with, I should be ashamed for even mentioning canceled trips.  Such minor inconveniences. Rest assured, even though I’ve spent this blog post venting and whining, we are in high spirits here at Casa de Pullen.  We laugh a lot, we FaceTime often with our favorite toddler - yesterday I read her a book about big girl panties.  She’s got an A plus in potty training, a quick learner!  It’s so much fun to watch her sing and dance and act kooky. She’s curious about the world and has a lot to say. She’s pure magic. I think she may be keeping us all going during these troubling days.  She’s our little ray of sunshine and hope.    Speaking of hope,  my gardens are coming along nicely.  I hope I  didn’t just jinx the whole operation.  Right now I’ve got basil, rosemary, thyme, and dill up and thriving.  I have one big, beefy tomato plant.  I sprinkled zinnia seeds here and there and tiny green sprouts are popping up, my reliable perennials are going like gangbusters, and I’ve even potted a few flowers for the porch.    Tomorrow should be mostly clear so I’ll snap some pics to share, that’s far more positive post than whining about the current situation.  I’ve been making some fun cards so I’ll share those too.  I should probably share recipes too.  Hot dog, there’s a couple of blog posts in my future!  I think I’ll go soak in a bubble bath and think about things.  I also need to give myself a pedicure and get my toes summer ready.  That’s never been a scheduled event before, now I’ll block out a whole afternoon for it.  Mickey needs a haircut, maybe he’ll let me do it.  It’ll give us something to do and more than likely something to laugh about.   I’ll be back tomorrow with a few pictures and a much better attitude.  I promise.  A good soak and a good book will work wonders.  And you can bet that these two will be waiting on the other side of the door when I come out.
Tumblr media
They follow me everywhere. Every day. All day.   They’re my posse. Until tomorrow -  take care, stay safe, turn off the news for a while, give your heart and mind a rest.  I’m going to take my own advice and catch you on the flip side. XOXO- Nancy

You can begin teaching the basic five commands described below when the puppy is 12 to 16 weeks old. Always keep training sessions brief—just 5 to 10 minutes at a time, at first—and always end on a positive note. If your puppy is having trouble learning a new command, end the session by reviewing something he already knows and give him plenty of praise and a big reward for his success. If your puppy gets bored or frustrated it will ultimately be counterproductive to learning. You can’t be with your puppy every second of the day and your puppy does need lots of rest, usually around 16 hours a day. When you and your puppy need a break, send your puppy to bed somewhere that will limit any roaming accidents. For puppies who love to chew things like power cords, this is a safety precaution that can stop your dog getting into mischief when you can’t watch them. You can also switch to other games like fetch or tug of war. With fetch, it’s important to teach your dog to “let go” or “leave it” on command, so you can remove something from his mouth without him getting aggressive. Likewise, with tug of war, you want to make sure the game doesn’t get too rough, as this can encourage aggressive behavior and also isn’t good for your dog’s mouth. Puppy socialization is a crucial period for all puppies. It is the time where you build a close bond with your puppy and expose him to all the world has to offer. Puppy training classes are an important element when socializing your puppy. At 10-12 weeks, puppy play is very mouthy – it’s a natural canine way to learn about their world and to play. Start teaching your puppy not to bite your hands and ankles during play in two ways. Obviously, your puppy will feel the need to bark, chew, and eliminate throughout the course of the day, and so she must be left somewhere she can satisfy her needs without causing any damage or annoyance. Your puppy will most probably eliminate as far as possible from her sleeping quarters-in her doggy toilet. By removing all chewable items from the puppy playpen-with the exception of hollow chewtoys stuffed with kibble-you will make chewing chewtoys your puppy’s favorite habit, a good habit! Helping Shelter Pets During the COVID-19 Outbreak
The human catastrophe unfolding during the COVID-19 outbreak is heartbreaking, but for animal lovers, the protector pet crisis is an added cause for concern.  We have asked Sarah Hodgson of Sarah Says Pets, a nyc area based and longtime friend of Goodnewsforpets, a renowned author, dog trainer, shield volunteer and serial dog adopter to talk about her heartfelt thoughts and methods to aid in this guest blog article -- Lea-Ann Germinder, Editor + Publisher.
Are you an animal enthusiast who likes to scroll websites like Pet Finder and The Dodo?  Do you have a list, as I do, of prospective Pet Names in your bedside table?  Are you a certifiable dog, cat, or pet nut?
Before you lock your doors for the duration, there's a growing sector of our people in dire need of aid: Companion Animals that are now left in surging numbers in animal shelters throughout the globe.  While several factors contribute to the cause–forced shutdowns, people–from staff, volunteers to potential adopters, the abrupt imbalance between abandoned animals and homes to take care of them is shocking.  Not to mention the rising quantity of owner-surrenders due in big part to this misinformation involving the virus and also our pets capacity to transmit it.  The middle for Disease and Control (the C.D.C.) reassures that pets show no signs of having the ability to spread COVID-19; still, the numbers rise.
With donations to charities around the decline and pets struggling to escape their confines to attend adoptathons or like outings due to the current health crisis, these sentient beings will have fewer advocates.
This is where you can help be part of a solution!
Donate Little Things Shelters throughout the globe are in desperate need of everything; Small gestures thing.  Consider dropping off toys, food, blanket, or cleaning materials.  If you do not feel comfortable or are not able to leave home due to present guidelnes, contribute to a refuge online so that the shelter can purchase what they want.
Consider Fostering As a foster pet parent, you consent to house and nurture a refuge animal for a while or until someone else adopts the pet.  The shelter generally absorbs medical costs, and food is either provided or tax-deductible.  As a foster parent, you’re responsible for daily interactions such as feeding, potty training, and perform.  If you choose to foster a pet, and in the process of doing this, fall in love with your little orphan, adoption is often simple to organize.
Choose to Adopt Should you’re considering becoming a pet parent and receptive to moving to a shelter, there are plenty of adoring animals desperate for homes.  And animal shelters are not just for dogs!  You can find all sorts of pets in the regional shelter, from cats and dogs to birds, guinea pigs, and bunnies.  Some shelters even care for homeless birds.  Call your local shelter to discover what awaits you.
Should you’re waiting for warmer months to adopt a pet, or to get the entire world to correct itself again, pause to reconsider.  There are so many loving and needing pets in shelters across the world; a lot of appreciative souls that will otherwise be lost forever.  Adopt today: it could be the best moment ever.
Supervise Intact Pets.  With COVID-19 drastically dispersing, the government is asking veterinarians to delay regular health checks and prevent optional surgeries unless deemed medically necessary.  In addition to maintaining doctors and staff safe, their neighborhood is asked to donate and conserve supplies, such as Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and ventilators, to human medicine.  The AVMA is developing guidelines that are upgraded continuously on their website.
Here’s the way you can assist shelters if your furry friend is intact.  Maintain all intact pet’s under oversight to prevent accidental mating.  When the ban lifts, schedule your pet to be repaired.  If money is a problem, contact the regional shelter to find low-cost practices in your area.
These are hard times for all of us.  While our health should be our number one concern, a lot people can go somewhat stir-crazy and have a hard time trying to remain productive; why not spend the necessary isolation with some four-legged companies?  Gratitude and giving come in several types: if you’re an animal enthusiast, perhaps you can look at opening your doors at this time of need.
Sarah Hodgson in Sarah Says Pets is reimagining how we live with our pets.  A famous writer of over twelve dog training guides including"Puppies for Dummies, 4th ed."  (Wiley and Sons Press, 2019),"Modern Dog Parenting" (St. Martin's Press, November, 2016), Sarah Hodgson is also a renowned pet trainer and behavior consultant for pet-loving households.   Visit Sarah Says Pets for more information.

Bikepacking the New River Trail . With kids and a pup
We set out on the New River Trail from Galax, VA in late June 2020.  This 43 mile trail snakes along one of the oldest rivers in the world. The New River is part of the Ohio River watershed, passing through the states of NC, VA, and WV. It is estimated to be between 10 and 360 million year old (that’s a range!) .   We settled on this gravel path for a biking adventure due to its length, remoteness and ease of logistics.
Tumblr media
Although every other trip and bike endeavor has been cancelled due to COVID, we kept this trip because of our need as a family to getaway from quarantine miasma, and due to the remoteness of the trail and confidence we would be safe and properly distanced. Traveling during COVID certainly adds to the logistic challenges. We brought all our food for the drive, and opted for ‘nature pee’ stops over gas station etc.
Along for the ride was Iver, 4 , Eleanor, 7 , and our aussiedoodle pup, Zero, 6months.  We carried in all of our food and camping gear etc.  Along the route, occasional potable waters spickets and ample porta-potties , though stores were nonexistent.
Each kid rode their own Early Rider bike and had various ways to be supported by us parents. Llama was on a Jamis Renegade gravel bike. And I was on the venerable Surly Big Dummy cargo bike - a steed that made this trip possible due to it’s hauling capacity. Zero rode in a Burly Tail Wagon trailer , and jogged when we went at Iver’s slower pace.
In 3 days we covered 43 miles. It was manageable, properly challenging, and entirely exciting! We camped for 3 nights and ended our trip at an airbnb. The next morning I rode the 43 miles back to the starting point to get our car.
Before digging in.. I’ll remind you that family (or any!) adventures start the moment they are planned.  Just put something on your calendar and the fun starts.  From the planning, to the excitement of the kids, to figuring out the unknowns, (acquiring new gear) - the adventure starts as soon as you set the intention. After a few trips like this, the logistics get really easy. Family bike adventures are low cost, super health, challenging, and clearly support confidence in our kids. Do it!
Photos tell the story best of all:
Tumblr media
We coupled this trip with a visit to family in Asheville, NC, so there was A LOT of driving. Using google maps we found green-spaces, parks, and  arboretums to stop at. Often for 1-2 hours, to properly romp the dog and the kids.
Tumblr media
Zero had the entire trunk to himself, yet often preferred to nuzzle between the kids. Cuteness galore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps it could have been packed with more grace. The Surly Big Dummy just swallows gear and is stable under weight. The dog trailer by Burly is not the lightest pull-  I call this training weight. Even a 1-2% grade change felt like a big deal.
Tumblr media
Llama had the heavy food and a Follow Me Tandem for occasional Iver towing.
Tumblr media
We rarely rode for more than 1 hour without stopping at one of the many shelters and picnic spots.
Tumblr media
The New River Trail was beautiful and well maintained the entire way
Tumblr media
One of several tunnels - very exciting .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Family bike trips may lack in romance, but they deliver in connection and sense of accomplishment. Before the end, we began brainstorming a trip for just the two of us.
Tumblr media
Amazing camp spot near Fries Junction .  Private beach, naked swimming, glorious sunrise, and really weird bugs.
Tumblr media
Speaking of weird bugs.  We deemed this creature a Dragon Horse Fairy Fly . (4″ long)
Tumblr media
Zero claimed the second picnic table as his own
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eleanor , 7, was amazing as she pushed herself to ride 95% unsupported
Tumblr media
Iver , 4 , would hammer for a while- up to 7 miles continuous ! -  and then get some support. This Follow Me Tandem is an amazing piece of gear.
Tumblr media
He could even fully chill out on the Big Dummy.
Tumblr media
Sometimes Big Sis helped out
Tumblr media
Smiles despite the grime at camp. JugWa and mac and cheese
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
We got caught in a violent thunder storm. Sideways blowing rain soaked us fast. We just huddled and laughed at it. When there is nothing to do, but get to next camp, you can enjoy the unexpected.

camp at Foster Falls. Every night we slept by the rushing river.  It’s amazing how quickly camp routines fall in to place.
Tumblr media
Iver hamming it up....all the time. This was seconds before an underwear malfunction that resulted in him soiling his only pair of shorts...and this sign.
Tumblr media
History abounds
Tumblr media
Along the entire route there were amazing rock formations and cliffs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The final 3 miles were rough. We left the trail and rode up 2x 300′ hills.  It was hot and we had to manage cars. Dry mango, shade rests, and promise of ice cream , kept us moving with little fussing. Our Airbnb was along the river, with some splendid swimming. We dried out our gear dined on fine frozen pizza, beer, and a large beef bone for Zero.
Tumblr media
The next morning I mounted the naked Big Dummy and retraced our route in under 3 hours (15 mph !) to get the car.
We highly recommend the New River Trail as a family cycling adventure destination. No frills, rugged, and beautiful.
Many thanks to Hampshire Bicycle Exchange in Amherst, MA - our favorite bike shop.  And to Early Rider for the best  kids bikes on the planet.

While we have actually gotten pretty good at spotting when a young puppy needs to potty by looking for indicators like circling, sniffing, etc we are still not 100%. Archer: Lucky for us Archer is being elevated as a solution dog so there are lots of areas for him to mingle where pet dogs do not routinely regular like supermarket, going shopping malls, book shops, dining establishments, theater, as well as the majority of places the public can go.

Champion: DOG. Unfortunately, we’ve experienced puppy Parvo break outs very first hand. It’s not enjoyable.

How to Train Your Lab Like a Mentor and Friend
Labs are downright cute and lovable pets. We adore their company and active demeanour. Training helps elevate the dog’s comfort level with you and his surroundings. It’s a wonderful experience to see his personality transform into a well-groomed pet.
Training disciplines your Lab and sets you both for a long-term and happy relationship. A responsible pup stays happier and healthier. Plus, it takes a big load off your mind as you may be constantly worried about your pet.
Tumblr media
The Basics
When your Lab is still in his formative years, you need to start with the basic commands: sit, stand, lay, and heel. Training sessions should be short and sweet - the ideal length is about 5 - 20 minutes. Make training fun for your puppy and let him enjoy the learning process. It’s better to involve him in playful activities and create beautiful memories for both of you.
Remember, a positive, polite tone will make your Lab love you more and learn faster. Learn to let go if he’s not in the mood - try again the next day. A morning or an evening schedule is always a good way to keep your pup engaged and get a sense of purpose in his early years.
Plus, you shouldn’t punish your pet; you need to build his confidence and earn his trust.  Punishing can make your puppy overly submissive or aggressive in the long run and you don’t want that.
Getting the Lab to Mingle
Labs yearn for love and affection. Socializing is a way to make your pet meet new people. Try to familiarize the pet with different people, places and experiences. For instance, your lab should know about the different types of people who visit the house: the cleaner or the gardener or the delivery boy. Labs can, at times, get super-excited to meet their friends, and this may become a cause of fear and anxiety for owners of other dogs.
Tumblr media
(Source)
Introduce him to other dogs but make sure you do it when both dogs are calm and composed. Exposure helps a Lab to shed his aggression towards strangers.
Activities and Exercise
Labs are athletic and energetic by nature and need about forty-five to ninety minutes of daily exercise. A workout regime ensures that your pup behaves well and, at the same time, enjoys his life.
Your Lab would love to be out of the house, engaging in games and activities. You can get him to run, play hide and seek, or go on adventure hikes. Be patient with your pet, make sure you’re giving him enough time to learn these activities. Any new activity calls for quite some motivation and supervision. It’s good to keep those treats handy, and you’ll see him all bubbly and ready to catch-on faster.
Peeing and Pooping
If you don’t teach your pup where to pee or poop you might end up with a lot of mess inside your house.
First step: decide on a spot where the where he can go peeing and pooping. It’s normal for young Labs to pee every few hours so you must take him outside every 2-3 hours. Train him to communicate about his needs. Learn to understand these signals so you can be proactive. See if he is getting restless or sniffing around on the floor. Go outside with him so he is not fearful of being alone while taking a leak or pooping. If the weather outside is too cold then you can use a potty trainer to help your dog pee on it.
Crate Training
There will be times when you’re not available to spend time with your Lab. On such occasions you want your pet to feel safe and comfortable. A crate gives your Lab his little happy abode.
Crate training is a slow process, you can put some treats and soft cloth in the crate and introduce it to your Lab. Let him understand the spot and keep the crate door open at first.
You can gradually train him to stay inside the crate with the door closed. While going out for long hours, you should ensure that you’re leaving the crate door open. Give your Lab the freedom to be inside or outside as he prefers.
Walking on a Leash
If not trained for leash walking, many Labs end up pulling or dragging the person holding their leash. Walking on a leash is a skill that requires proper training and motivation. The first step is to let your pet get used to the collar and leash. Make him wear it sometimes so he gets used to it.
Tumblr media
(Source)
Train him to take short walks inside the house and then move outdoors. Offering treats and using sound cues can help you get your dog’s attention. Offer him care and support, and he’ll soon learn to display his best behaviour while walking on a leash.
Preventing the Pup from Biting
Labs have a tendency of mouthing and nibbling as soon as they start teething. You can’t ignore it your puppy starts biting is it may soon become a habit. Making a painful sound and withdrawing from the puppy is one way to show your displeasure. Another technique is to replace your hand or foot with a toy as soon as they start biting. Show your Lab that biting is not a good thing.
Don’t be harsh on the little pup as he’s innocent about his destructive behaviour. Being communicative will help you build a strong bond with your pet.
Hunting
A Lab is ready to learn how to hunt after they have started following the basic obedience commands. There should be a specific retrieve command for your Lab to understand and follow. Using scented dummies during hunts is a good way to train your Lab into learning how to find and retrieve an animal. Start the training on land and you can gradually move to water training.
Labrador Retrievers are natural hunters and the right training will help you turn your Lab into a successful hunter.
Over to You
Be nice to your Lab, he’s a loyal companion and needs to be handled with care. He yearns for your affection and encouragement. Training has to be a bundle of education, warmth, and fun for your Lab. When start becoming a friend to your Lab he reciprocates and you’ll both create memories that stay with you for life.

phew you are the last one! dogblrpositivity check! You're doing your best with your dog over there! Keep it up! What's it like in a day of the life of your dog? Care to share a recent brag? What's your favorite dog gear? BONUS QUESTION for your dog: What's your favorite treat that you could eat forever and ever? Hope you are having a good day!
Aww thanks!
Haha a day in the life? Well, usually Merlin’s day starts off at around 6 AM: the boyfriend takes him for a walk before he goes to work for about an hour. Meiks day starts when Merlin comes back home and wakes him up with a bunch of kisses. I’ll then take Meik out for a quick potty and then I start making their breakfast. We feed Merlin a raw diet which he absolutely loves and it takes him up to 20 minutes to gobble all of it up. Meik gets his kibble in one of those treat balls. Umm, then Merlin will go to sleep on the stone tiles in our hallway and whenever I walk by, he’ll roll on his back and collects all the cuddles. Meik will go back to sleep in his crate, bundled up in a million blankets. I will then take Merlin for a walk between 12 and 1 PM for another hour or two - Meik will come with us if he’s having a good day. In the afternoon when the boyfriend comes home for his break we’ll all usually snuggle up on the couch or run some errands. Merlin then gets a cow ear or something like that to chew on, Meik gets a dried piece of rumen and at around 5 PM I take them out for another quick walk where we practice our recall and/or do some dummy training - again Meik will only come with us on his ‘good days’. When we come home they’re done for the day and after he’s gotten his dinner at around 7 PM Merlin goes back to sleep in the hallway and Meik in his crate. The boyfriend will come home between 9 PM and 1 AM and will let the doggos out for a quick potty one last time and will then put them in their crates for the night. So that’s the schedule the puppers are on Tuesday - Saturday, we’re both off work Sunday and Monday so on those days we take them on a walk in the mornings and then usually drive somewhere for a big walk/hike in the afternoon. We also go to training classes and meet up with Merlin’s puppy friends 1 - 2 times a week.
Ukay that was a lot. Where were we? Ah yes, a recent brag; I’m incredibly proud of Merlin’s behavior at our last dog class. We went for a walk with 8 dogs and always had 2 - 3 dogs off leash and playing around, whilst the others were supposed to walk calmly on leash. Merlin was perfect all the way through the class he didn’t bark or lunge at another dog once, his recall was on point and the interactions he had with the other pups were perfect. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come 🤗
My favorite dog gear atm is definitely the non-stop dog wear harness and the running belt (which is technically human gear?? lol idk). It was so worth the money and I can’t wait till Merlin gets older so that we can really start canicross & jöring.
Merlins favorite treat is a cow ear, Meiks is dried chicken filets cuz hes picky like tht.
Thanks & I hope you have a good day too!!

Tethers are great for when you are home and able to supervise your dog (although you should still work on crate training your dog when you are home, so that being crated does not become a predictor of you leaving the house). Tethering means tying a leash to your waist so that the puppy or dog is leashed and with you as you move throughout the house; a six foot leash will do fine. Tethering allows you to spend more time with your dog than when he is in the crate, and is a great way to form a close bond with your dog. It also provides more opportunity to start noticing pre-elimination behaviors. When he does, he gets lots of praise and intermittent rewards, which reinforce to him that checking in is rewarding and fun. This simple trick keeps his focus more on us, and less on the countless distractions on the street of New York City or the squirrels in Central Park. The same must go for employees. #Yorkshire_terriers bring to mind visions of pampered purse dogs. Your #Yorkie certainly doesn't mind that you fell in love with her because she's so adorable, but she's got intelligence, too. Look past her soft brown eyes and her gorgeous hair and appreciate her for her brains and her beauty.
Very intelligent, actually, according to the Official Yorkie Guide. Tracy Barr and Peter F. Veling agree in "Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies," saying that while they're not up there with the smartest of the smart dogs like border collies and poodles, Yorkies' intelligence is above average.
Above Average #Yorkshire #terriers may not be the Einsteins of the canine world, but they are intelligent.
Bred to Work Your #Yorkie has her roots in the working class. The American Kennel Club reports that #YorkshireTerriers were bred to be rat catchers and were valued for keeping 19th-century clothing mills free from the vermin. Being bred to work plays an important role in the intelligence of your tiny terrier, as working dogs are highly trainable. According to Stanley Coren, author of "The Intelligence of Dogs," good trainers can ac***plish many things with dogs of any intelligence level, but they know that dogs with a working mind-set are easier to teach.
Basic Training Training for your Yorkie should begin as soon as you bring her home. The Official Yorkie Guide suggests starting out very basic: the first lesson should be to introduce her to her new home, getting her familiar with where her food and water are, where she'll be sleeping and the proper place to potty. Potty-training may take a few weeks, but with patience and consistency she'll catch on. Use simple, one-word ***mands with your young Yorkshire terrier during early training. She'll be ready for puppy kindergarten by the time she is 3 months old. You may be able to train your Yorkie on your own, but classes will help socialize your little one and introduce her to an array of new sights and sounds. In her book on Yorkies, Cheryl S. Smith writes that exposing your Yorkie to new stimuli in a nonthreatening environment will help to make her a well-adjusted terrier.

Fish-fingers.
Two fish-fingers, or possibly just the one, in an obscene gesture in the general direction of the ‘femail’ article I’ve just read, to see how bad it was. It was bad. Guilt-tripping the ‘SlummyMummy’ blog-writers who might allow their precious moppets to watch TV instead of having piano practice. I’m snort-laughing, when the boy was small, we didn’t have ‘TV’, the tinfoil-hat ex had realised he was speeding home from work to watch whichever Star Trek variant was on after ‘tea’, so asked me to cancel the licence. Nutter. He actually went so far as to move the TV cabinet completely away from the ariel socket, in case the detector-van passed by. That was a weird couple of years, not least because it involved the birth of the boy, and my subsequent detachment from reality as I had known it.
I didn’t have the pressure of social media telling me I was doing everything wrong. I just had the in-laws tutting at dust on the tops of door-frames, and telling me not to pick up the bundle of flailing limbs every time it made ‘that’ noise. With all due respect, it probably took him about 14 years to be able to reach the tops of the door-frames, and even then, I don’t think he was inclined to lick them or anything. The in-laws, and pensioners at bus-stops, and the intrusive sister-in-law, who insisted her parenting was the ‘right’ way, and mine was wrong. “Oh! We don’t say ‘No.’ to the children, it’s negative!” that still irritates me, and it’s probably the reason her kids aren’t entirely balanced.
I’m not claiming my way was ‘right’. To loop back to the fish-finger theme, I did once catch my chromosomal contribution to the world eating a frozen fish-finger. After an extended period of “What’s that SMELL?” we located another defrosted and dried out fish-finger inside the sofa, and he’d posted one into the video-player as well. I’m blaming the Postman Pat videos for that. Toddlers are very trying, as they explore and make sense of the world around them. I suspect my mind might actually have snapped the time I’d phoned the ex, in floods of scalding tears, crying that I couldn’t do this any more; that was during potty-training, and the kid went through a phase of shitting literally anywhere but in the potty. I was working part-time, evenings and weekends, while the ex worked his day-job, the in-laws had the child, and the ex for ‘tea’ and dropped me off at work Monday-Wednesday. Looking back, I’m not entirely sure how I managed that, especially during the first year, when I was breast-feeding, being ‘Mum’ all day, and then working 5pm until 11pm three nights a week, and all day on a Sunday. The vodka-on-the-bus-home period was scary, in response to other stimulus, I just didn’t want to go home. (I wasn’t breast-feeding during the vodka-avoidance period.)
It was hard, partly because of who and what I am, and partly because of other people’s expectations of what I should be/do. That’s the crux of this ramble, yet again. Back in the dark ages, when I had the sprog, there wasn’t internet everywhere all the time. The printed newspapers would throw out the occasional ‘Back to sleep’ or passive smoking article, and pensioners at bus-stops would assume a geriatric right to poke your sleeping offspring, and offer old-wive’s-tales on what you should be doing, but that was about it. My isolation was self-inflicted, because I was deranged-terrified, and fearful of someone-else telling me I was doing it all wrong. I didn’t go to any of the voluntary mother-and-baby groups, and the pre-school group scared the life out of me, because all the other-mothers were much older, and seemed to have their shit together, unlike me.
That ‘fear’, that everyone else knew what they were doing, and I was the only one flailing around in a tide of found-snacks, and lost-Bob-the-Builder-toys, I think that’s part of the reason for the ‘alternative’ Mum-pages. NOBODY is bragging about their child still being in their overnight-nappy at 8am, and to label a vast, desperate swathe of people as gin-addled degenerates is, wait for it, divisive. The ‘femail’ readers, pressing their faces to our less-than-spotless windows, and preparing the pyres and pitchforks, because we’re different-to-them. Are we? We KNOW we’re lucky to have children, and we do have amazing moments, but, we’re acknowledging that sometimes it’s a struggle. That collective sigh of “Oh, it’s not just me, then?” is needed as light relief in these shambolic days. Reassuring some new mother that your child once put the cat in the washing machine as well, or that you, too have accidentally pulled a spare pair of child-pants out of the jumble of shit at the bottom of your massive Mum-bag-that-goes-everywhere, those little half-smiles make a difference to parents who are struggling.
None of the slummy mummies are glamorising the gutter, they’re providing a view into their less-than-perfect reality, in the face of this tide of competitive-caring, that isn’t actually ‘caring’ at all, it’s point-scoring. She speaks four languages and plays the piano at five, does she? Smashing. Did you decide to use the time you could have spent interacting with her ‘enriching’ her instead, and then accuse a mother who allows their child to eat Wotsits for breakfast of neglect?
Pretending-everything-was-perfect during the potty-missing, and the trying-to-find-a-shirt-without-a-suspicious-stain wrecked me. I never had a ‘tribe’, or a ‘village’ to help me raise my child, he’s a bit odd as a result, but I love his oddness. I’d rather have my slightly-odd 19 year old than an automaton, he’s not perfect, and I’m not perfect, none of us are. The ‘femail’ article DOES acknowledge that the celebrity-perfection is unattainable, we don’t all have millions in the bank, and nannies and such. What the article does is encourage parents to dummy-up, to apply a rose-tinted filter to everything, and not mention the grim bits. The exact bastard opposite, in my humble opinion, of what we should be doing. The general Mental Health message is that we DO need to talk, we DO need to own-up when we’re not-OK, but the femail-computer-says-no. All must be well at all times, and we’re deplorable slatterns if there’s a rogue pea doing the rounds of the kitchen. (There’s always a rogue pea, the chuffing things get around more than Dora the Explorer.)
The femail article, whilst acknowledging that we’re not all going to have a Beyonce pregnancy, or adopt as many moppets as Brangelina, sets out a different kind of unattainable. In femail-land, the children probably don’t ever rub food into their hair, the dog, and that bit underneath the high-chair tray that’s virtually impossible to clean. In femail-land it’s all stiff-upper-lip, and carry-on-regardless, none of this crying into our gin, because we’re utterly exhausted, and the small people who fell out of us are  testing our patience, because that’s what they do. That ‘Mum-up’ attitude is the reason for some of my scars, I wouldn’t ever intentionally hurt another person, but I hurt myself, a lot, because I didn’t know how else to deal with not-coping. Sweeping not-coping under the rug just means there’s a massive lump under the rug, and I’ve tripped over that metaphorical lump, and landed on my arse enough times not to want other people to go through that.
Yes, some of us share the grotty bits, the grim bits, and the not-perfect bits. We’re not looking to out-shit each other, we’re saying “This happened to me, and I came through it, you can, too.” offering a hand that might well have recently contained spat-out food, snotty tissues, or another letter from school handed in on the day of the actual trip. Offering that hand, even though we don’t have the must-have-hologram-manicure, or whatever it is this week. Offering that hand, even though the nails might be bitten, or the knuckles near-white from clutching a wine-glass a little bit more tightly, because yet another shitty thing has happened, and we have to deal with it. Femail, we’re not coming to your house, and shitting on your doorstep, it’s you, coming to our houses, and pressing your nose to the window. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to read it, I’m fairly certain that the vast majority of ‘us’ aren’t borderline-obsessively back-trawling your output, to look for examples of you getting things ‘wrong’. We’re busy trying to hold each other up, to help each other through times and experiences that are difficult. If you still have your pitchfork to hand, come at me, I am a Witch, but you’re not technically allowed to burn me any more, I wonder if that will change after Brexit?
Being a Witch, and occasional slattern, sometimes drinking more wine than the government says I ought to, and not always buying fair-trade-organic, because it depends what’s on offer at Aldi might well not sit within your world-view. It’s not hurting you, though. “If it harm none, do as thou will.”

Business Sponsorships 0:15 Nearly 10 years ago, my family turned to Gigi for help with our fearful border collie, Lilly. Unlike other trainers who pretty much gave up on us, Gigi helped us teach Lilly the skills she needed for a happy life. We adopted a new border collie puppy, Clover, in September 2014. Just four days after her arrival home, Clover attended her first puppy class with Gigi. We’re thrilled to have Gigi as part of our puppy’s life. For us, it’s well worth the drive from Golden to take classes with Gigi each week. Jump up ^ McKinley, S.; R. J.
