the ageism/ beauty obsession* is what it *probably is*, but that deeply depresses me so im gonna let the delusions speak and explore other ideas.

also just… pointing out. matthew needham is only 11 years younger than paddy… they were born in different generations but 10 years is not a generation gap? that doesnt seem like enough of an age gap for ageism to apply to one but not the other but… well what do i know. (and pleace and love, i think hes cute, but matthews far from the most handsome man in hotd) also. exception that prooves the rule? rhys ifans is 6 years Older than paddy (and ottos the one who set alicent up to be brutalized by every man around her until she dies, it were going by hotd canon!) and sure, otto Might be the second most hated in the fandom, but not anywhere Near how vis is. but rhys is also incredibly handsome. so that Obviously gives the character he plays a free pass to do whatever.

if it was just about actions then theyve both done terrible things. and theyve both hurt everyones favorite beautiful doe eyed pretty brown eyed beauty beautiful pretty girl. but larys doesnt get near the amount of vitriol for it. people analyze what larys did. people ship Them. and if youll allow me to straddle my armchair for a moment, then theres my thought that viserys is the bad dad we get the most time with. and NOBODY has a good relationship with their father. most people cant do anything about that, so instead they seek catharsis through fiction. smacking the representation of your father cause you cant smack your real father. see also- succession fandoms treatment of logan roy

while i do think its ultimately just about playing favorites, ageism, beauty obsession**, i think theres also an element of ableism. and hear me out, cause i know ur thinking ‘arent they both disabled?’

larys disability is very visible and apparent, the limitations of that disability as well. his leg is twisted, he wears that metal boot over his foot, he walks with a cane, he has a limp. he cant run, cant fight, cant hunt, i can tell you from personal experience stairs are a struggle. he can probably ride a horse but its sure not comfortable. its more understandable. more or less, what you see is what it is. and, importantly, its not… unpleasant** to look at. his face is fine. the rest of his body is fine. just his leg.

viserys disability spawns from an illness. and even though hotd changed viserys illness to be more visual, the nature of illness is you cant see the cause, only the effects. and most of those effects are only things the person experiencing the illness can feel.

i had a conversation with my mom about this awhile ago after she pulled a tendon? in her leg and was in near constant pain while it healed, couple weeks. she told me she had no idea how i handled this, day in/day out, week after week, for Years. she was miserable and at the end of her rope after just a week of it. my moms a runner and runs something like 50 miles a week, obviously she couldnt do this while it healed and was very depressed about it. i could only kinda laugh. i couldnt tell her how i handle it, cause i cant. i just told her i think if you dont have chronic pain or a chronic illness, you just straight up do not and Will not understand what its like. she just had a little taste of it.

i think that also might be why theres not as much (good) discussion around viserys disability. because people just, do not understand it. dont understand what its doing to him.

they dont get how chronic illness eats away at you (in vis case, literally!) taking piece by piece until theyres nothing left. until youre just a shell of the person you used to be. they dont feel how chronic pain grinds away at you until youre nothing but a raw exposed bundle of nerves. because those arent things you can see. only feel. experience first hand.

the show tries to make up for this lack by making viserys illness have a very striking visable aspect to it. to show the progression of his illness and the effect its having on him. but illness is gross**. its not pretty. its not pleasant to look at, to *think* about. it ravages his face, his body, his teeth rot and his hair falls put. his arm has to be amputated, his eye is removed, half his face rots away. peoples stomachs turn to look at it and their animal instincts that this is Bad kick in.

if im being kind, most people dont want to talk about things that are unpleasant. that make them sick, that upset and scare them.

if im not being kind, the eugenics minded decide that this means *viserys* is bad. that this is a punishment for or straight up a moral failing of his. outer beauty reflects inner beauty so ugly=evil pretty=good. and all that bullshit. if youre coming at it from this pov you CANT think deeper about viserys disability/illness/character beyond it being a punishment or joke, because then you must confront your belief that illness is a punishment reserved for the Bad. and that is a thought that is just incompatible with life

Week 1 - The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) Short Analytic Essay

The film I saw was The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, (see trailer below). This movie was released in July of 2012, 10 years after the original Spider-Man was released starring Tobey Maguire. I chose this movie as it was one of the first movies I remember fully and joyfully watching, as I was seven years old at the time. My mom bought us the Blu-ray DVD when it came out in November, and my sister, my two cousins and I would watch it all of the time; so another major impact of this movie was simply spending time with my family. However in this short essay, I will not focus on the significance of this film but speak about the box office performance, critical acclimation, general plot of the film, factors that could have persuaded or limited viewers from watching, the conventionality, and what new revelations I found after rewatching all these years later.

In regards to the box office numbers, this film was commercially successful as the budget was about 220-230 million dollars and made $262,030,633 domestically and $495,895,604 internationally, or $757,890,267 worldwide. Although the opening weekend only raked in 23.7% of total gross, $62,002,688 respectively, it still performed well and the DVD and Blu-ray sales also performed admirably with a total of $113,789,781 domestically, (The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) Box Office Numbers via THE NUMBERS). Staying a little below trend with the commercial aspects, the movie was still critically successful with ratings of 6.9/10 for IMDb, a 71% for Rotten Tomatoes, and 66% for Metacritic. Regardless, the film is considered successful in both aspects as it made 2x the budget just from the domestic box office sales and received highly related reviews. One review is from Roger Ebert, who claims The Amazing Spider-Man is "...probably the second best [out of the Spider-Man franchise]." In the same article, "A remake that's also a reboot," he gives the film a 4.5/5 star rating. He also touches on an aspect that many of those who have watched the film appreciate; the screen time given to show Parker's story as well as an explanation why he decides to step into his newfound role, (A remake that’s also a reboot via Roger Ebert).

The movie begins with Parker as a child when he still lived with his parents, who soon dropped him off to board at his aunt and uncle's house and then mysteriously disappeared. Leaving behind a bag with his father's work that Parker finds at the beginning of the film, which then sends him on a hunt for answers that leads him to the "Tower," also known as the headquarters of Oscorp where his father's former research partner currently works, (The Amazing Spider-Man Summaries/Synopsis via IMDb).

The background story of Peter Parker is rather tragic, however, the producers used it to their advantage to bring in a larger audience in addition to the action scenes. Along with the star actors including Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Rhys Ifans and even Stan Lee's cameo where he plays the librarian in a fight scene. With the rating of the film being PG-13, that the directors represented the film to the proper audience of young teenagers and family, which also contributed to the high viewing and ratings. Even watching the Peter Parker Wake Up Scene (see below), you can see that this is a high-action, suspenseful movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat, pretty spot on with what I remembered.

On the other hand, a restraining factor that might have prevented more viewers from seeing this film is how recent the film came out in consideration to the original Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire. As I mentioned earlier, The Amazing Spider-Man only came out 10 years after the first Spider-Man, and 5 years after Spider-Man 3, so potential viewers who do not follow the Marvel-verse have a subsidiary probability of viewing the movie. Even so, looking at current reviews The Amazing Spider-Man (see promotional flier below) with Andrew Garfield is still loved, however recent adaptations starring Tom Holland are more favored.

Although this movie is categorized as conventional, there are some unconventional themes that can be observed throughout the movie. Such as the controversial dispute Parker exchanges with Captain Stacy, where he claims the police are not doing their jobs effectively enough and that the "amateur in a suit" is only trying to help and do what the police are failing to do. Seeing as I was only six at the time I watched this movie, I cannot attest to society's views on the police in 2012, however it is a very controversial topic that is talked about more and more today. Another controversial topic that stood out to me is how the police and government try to downplay Lizard's sighting on the bridge. Which reflects the lack of information from government officials and framing of news coverage we experienced then and especially now in America. An example can be said about the death of the French photographer Remi Ochlik and war reporter Marie Colvin, who died from a Syrian attack in 2012. It is believed that they were targeted by Assad for speaking out, however the media framed them as being accidentally caught in the crossfire as they were suspected of being "rebel forces," Journalists Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik die in Homs via BBC News).

Overall, there are a lot of new affairs I gathered after re-watching this film. Especially since the last time I saw this film I was about six or seven years old. Now, I can relate with Peter Parker's more introverted and shy side. I have also learned and experienced a lot about society and rhetorical and ironic messages in the media. However, aside from social commentary, the biggest difference I noticed was the spider bite scene as my memory of this scene was that he got bit in an office-like setting (?) whereas he actually got bit in the lab/building where the spiders and genetic testing took place (go figure!).

Fic background ask question! You mentioned that you chose House Costayne for Otto’s mother’s house, what drew you to that house specifically? Did that house influence Otto or his mother in any specific way? 🖤💛

Ahh, thank youu! This is gonna be very long & rambly, so I'm putting it under a cut

So, ngl, I haven't fleshed out Hobert & Otto's mom a whole lot--and given that Steffan Rhodri (Hobert's actor) & Rhys Ifans are both in their mid 50s when HOTD starts, it feels like a safe assumption that both their parents are probably dead & not just their dad. So I've been working with the assumption that Unnamed Costayne Mother had them a bit later in life & has been dead since my fic started (not unlike Lord Yorbert Royce, but hers was just plain "being old" instead of cancer). So you can see why I thought "maybe I don't need to do a whole bunch with her," especially given how expansive the cast of the fic already is.

Mostly, I picked her being part of House Costayne because I thought it would be so silly if Hobert & Otto just were the cousins of Ella, Yorick, & Aemon's uncle. A kind of Five Degrees of Kevin Bacon thing. So many people are so many other people's cousins in my fic that it's just very "Why not? It's very silly at this point." So that's why those guys' mom is the paternal aunt of Lord Owen Costayne, who is Lady Rhea Royce's brother-in-law (the one she likes). It's funny to me if those two guys are related to Stoic Sports Man Who Lets His Wife Peg Him & have that much more connection to my main OCs (especially since Otto is beefing with Yorick when he's a literal small child for no other reason than "this is my rival's son").

The secondary, & less crucial to my decision making, reason I picked House Costayne is that if I'm already altering canon so much in terms of shuffling some of the Dance alliances around, & was already planning to make the Costaynes be with The Greens because them siding against their liege lords apropos of nothing didn't make sense to me, then why not just give them a whole bunch of connections there? I'm already giving House Costayne a reason to side with Aegon (their Lady is the aunt of my OCs), so let's just make Lord Owen be Otto's cousin too! So it's really more "just tie these guys to the Hightowers even more than they were before."

A thing to remember about me is, "yes I know the lore, but I also sometimes forget it." This is how we get things like "I accidentally made Borros Baratheon have a connection to Criston Cole because I forgot which house Criston's dad works for" & "I accidentally made implications that Otto is, like, probably the nephew of Elinor Costayne." So that's fun. SOTF Version of Ser Otto Hightower, man that you are. Being Hand for 3 Targaryen Kings (pay no attention to him getting fired twice) while also very much having a mom who was directly related to one of the Black Brides. I have Elinor in my big, main family tree & still forgot that implication & it makes everything have directly trackable motivations, but also be so, so much funnier. Hand to the guy who almost killed Maegor out of some weird sense of ambitious gratitude (the throne beat Jaehaerys to it, & honestly, slay), Hand to that guy's grandson to try & nip future problems in the bud (& stay on that bureaucratic grindset), beef with your boss's brother because "I don't like his vibe. He might try some fuckshit--don't you remember what happened last time one of you guys had a little brother with a wife he disliked & zero enrichment in his enclosure?," spend the rest of his life trying to head off issues that may or may not exist. I'm not saying I've made Otto an unintentional hero or that he's justified & absolved in anything, because he absolutely 10000000% is not. I'm saying I've made him be a character in a workplace comedy who thinks he's in a prestige drama, because SOTF is a comedy actually.

The weird cocktail of "your dad was an overly strict prick with standards in the stratosphere who never said he was proud or hugged either of you," & "equally kind of cold & pragmatic mom who had to helplessly watch as her relative was forced to marry The Actual Worst Guy To Happen To Westeros So Far & just never recovered" is what made Hobert & Otto Like That

Act One:

We open on a cold and stormy night. It is 11:45 p.m. on May 3rd, 2002. We turn our attention to a small suburban house in Forest Hills, Queens, New York.

We cut to a boy, age 7, sitting on a staircase with his hands cupped over his eyes.

"3...2...1. Ready or not, here I come." The child says out loud. He lifts himself up off the staircase and walks into the living room.

He then notices a pair of shoes underneath the window sill curtain. He pulls back the curtain...and a broom with a fedora on top falls over next to the boy. The boy, with a dejected look on his face, searches the rest of the house for his father. He checks the closet of his room, nothing there, he checks in the garage, nothing there, until after standing in place in the middle of the house wondering where his father could be, the boy has a eureka moment, and decides to check his Dad's office.

Once he opens the door, he looks inside and notices papers strew out all over the floor. Documents...of some sort of....cure? Cure for what? And why are they researching.....

Spiders?

Suddenly, his Dad bursts in.

Richard Parker, age 51, looks down at Peter with an alarmed look on his face.

Richard: "Peter, what are you doing in my office?"

Peter: "I thought I would find you in here."

Richard: "Peter, I told you you aren't supposed to be in here. This is private work stuff."

Peter: "But I thought we were playing Hide 'n' Seek?"

Richard: "Not right now..."

Richard starts erasing equations written on a chalkboard and packing the scattered documents into a large suitcase.

Peter: "Where are you going?"

Richard: "Peter, your mother and I have to go away for a few weeks. We're gonna drop you off at your Uncle Ben and Aunt May's place for the time being."

Peter: "Dad, why can't I go with you?

Richard: "I told you, it's top secret, Peter. It could put you in danger."

Mary Parker, age 49, walks into the room.

Mary: "Richard, we have to leave. The plane leaves in half an hour."

Richard: "Okay, I'm almost ready, get the car started. We'll take Peter to Ben's place."

Mary takes Peter by the hand, and takes him to the car. Richard stuffs the suitcases in the trunk of the car and steps inside of the driver's seat, and started the engine. After a few miles of driving, they finally make it to the residence of Ben and May Parker.

When they get there, they hand Peter over to his Uncle and Aunt.

Ben: "Richard? What are you doing here this late at night?"

Richard: "There's no time to explain. Take good care of him, Ben, please."

Ben: "Of course."

Richard: "Thank God for you, Ben."

Mary: "Peter, I know this must be scary for you right now, but I promise you, everything will be alright."

Peter: "Okay, Mom."

Mary: "I love you more than anything else in this world, Peter. Please be good."

Peter: "I will, Mom."

Richard: "Honey, we have to leave."

Mary gives Peter one last kiss on the forehead, and gets in the car.

Richard says his final goodbyes to his son.

Richard: "I love you, Peter."

Peter, with tears in his eyes, says his final goodbyes to his father.

Richard: "We'll be back, Peter."

Richard shuts the door, gets in the car, and drives off with Mary.

Peter watches the car exit the driveway and disappear into the night. He is comforted by Ben and May. They remind him his parents will be back in a few weeks.

Little did Peter know, that would be the last time he would ever see his parents again.

This route has been a wild ride so far. And we're only on chapter 4.

STORY

Time-Skip look now. I love most of the Blue Lions redesigns.

I thinking Dimitri's definitely going to get a new story line because at this point there's no way we go back to AM. Which is exactly what I wanted. So far only Edelgard's just getting a repeat, but still not sure how much not having TWSITD around will change things.

OFC, Dimitri's arc could still be about him going bad and redemption, but like, please, no. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE it in AM, but it just . . . wouldn't make sense here? Not while he has responsibilities as a king, some answers about Duscur, and a good support system. I just think unless something changes, that would be OOC.

Felix, being respectful? What is this?

PLEASE PROTECT RHEA. OMG. Please pick Rhea, please.

I love how this NPC noble is wearing an armored helmet among all these unique designs lamo. I'm guessing that his opinion is wrong. Which means not helping Rhea is wrong. PLEASE.

Ohhh, so Edelgard putting a corrupt as shit noble in charge of her religious propaganda machine is backfiring. Hell yes. Love how people in the Kingdom are side-eying that "move."

I love all the political discussion going into this. And love the point of how Dimitri can't just turn on his allies without losing face. It's something Edelgard never even considered after accepting the church's help with the coup.

And yessss bringing up that they'll just become the Empire's lackeys. Plus, we know Edelgard want's all of Fodlan and not just the church.

Yuck, imagine replacing Rhea with Count Varley. God, am I glad this decision of hers is biting her in the ass here.

Haha, I think I saw the line everyone uses for bad takes. But Dimitri is just spitting facts here. All those violent revolutions are just teenage fantasies that almost never turn out. Slow and steady change is the only permanent change, and you can't have lasting change without having something solid it's sitting on.

That said, I'm so, so glad we're seeing Dimitri and a king and his politics.

Shez's power getting addressed in this route is amazing. And that it matters so much to her that Dimitri's not disturbed by it.

Also entertained by the difference here between Shez with Claude and Shez with Dimitri, where with Claude she was ready to leave, and here she's already putting trust in Dimitri. Honestly don't remember with Edelgard.

So in Edelgard's route, we attack refugees. In Dimitri's we protect. Seems right. I mean, I know it's more complicated than that, but still.

Her threat to tell Ingrid about Sylvain's flirting 😊😊😊 did the other houses mention each other that much and I missed it? Or does this really make the Blue Lions seem so close.

Of course the criticisms of 'BTS have become too westernized and American' are coming from Ifans. Many people from dominant cultures (ie western, English speaking) want other, globally non dominant cultures to stay localized and static. I have seen this both in my work as an anthropologist and as an occasional reader of fandom discourse. My mom is from Japan and that also colors how I see these things. In my opinion, the problem with most of these ideas is that they tend to flirt with cultural essentialism. There is a reading of other cultures as having qualities that are inherent and outside of the flux of our contemporary informatized world. They want BTS and Kpop to hit pause and stay gold or something.

But Kpop would not exist without globalization. (The 'pop' part is the tip off). It is influenced by American genres like Hip Hop, R&B, pop and more. Some argue that the diversity of subgenres and hybrid genres that fall under the spectrum of 'Kpop' is too expansive to be labeled as one genre. Some say that stuff like the idol/trainee system, or importance of choreography, concept and visual media make Kpop Kpop. It could all be true. Whatever the case, most would probably agree that it is a Korean variation of globalized music we are talking about. But yeah the westernization has been there since day one. (I have been a fan since second gen and I can tell you that many of those groups were presenting similarly, in sound and style, to their Black American contemporaries).

Globalization is seen by many as a reinforcement of global western hegemony after centuries of imperialism and colonialism. Globalization means the spread of western culture, media, politics, norms, economies, language and ideologies throughout the world. Maybe this is the reason why many Ifans are uncomfortable with Kpop being a Korean, but also globalized, thing. The idea that something like pop music should or could ever be culturally pure is rooted in essentialist dogma, in my humble opinion. I grew up strongly identifying with my Asian side. It's weird that just as I am beginning to see more people who look like me in American media, I am also hearing people say that those people are sacrificing their truth to be a part of American culture. I respectfully disagree with these claims. And all pop is westernized to some degree. But if they make strong decisions, BTS will continue BTSsizing the west.

3. She loved stories of exotic adventures and used to daydream about running away to see

5. Although her affair was purely a pleasant fantasy, she truly loved Vex
