Re: Your last post - Another thing that bothered me in DT17 was that Fenton was suddenly part of Team Darkwing. He seems like yet another sidekick of DW's, which makes Launchpad feel less special.
Thanks for the ask! This is a spectacular point that made me want to organize my thoughts. ♡
DT17 skewed nearly all the characters by making so many unnecessary changes and switcheroos.
Fenton in DT '87 was a poor man who had an amazing knack for counting and a wholly unmatched weird zest for life. His mom was a single mother who was depressed and left by a verbally (at least) abusive man. Fenton accidentally steals the suit, and then proceeds to roll with this opportunity to be somebody! He learns to be a hero on the go. He makes believable mistakes, like accidentally dropping the manual in a villain's car and forgetting about it because he outsmarted them at the moment.
Fenton '17 is none of the above. He's someone who wants to make a change for the greater good and calmly does things the proper way, like reading the Gizmo suit instructions and practicing them in secret. This cautious sensibility is then forgotten and he posts vital details about the suit online, because plot needs to happen.
While a reboot pretty much guarantees that characters will be different since writers, artists and the time period is different, the extent to which DT17 swapped backstories and generally made characters interchangeable is... pretty infuriating, lol.
Fenton is a hero who vies for change but is unsure on how to do so and was inspired by Launchpad.
Drake is a hero who vies for change but is unsure on how to do so and was inspired by Launchpad.
Mrs. Beakley used to be a feminine civilian character who's now a spy in this rendition.
Gandra Dee used to be a feminine civilian character who's now a spy in this rendition.
The variety of characters in the slice of life duck show with magical elements is gone!
They tried to sprinkle in dustings of the old personalities, but it's just not believable. Drake Mallard is completely smoothed out (metaphorically and literally), but then they insert his self-absorbed tendencies at random times.
OG Fenton and Drake's bond was impeccable. The writers really played around with the hilarities of having alter-egos and having to deal with each other civilly and heroically. They weren't really 'friends' in either stage. It makes sense, because at their core, Darkwing can't get along with a big-name hero because of his jealousy, and Drake can't get along with a loud, uncouth guy who was suddenly invited by Launchpad to stay over.
DT17 has the awkward "friends as civvies, one-sided rivalry as heroes." It's so weird to see Drake be positive with Fenton and then be either oblivious or delusional (depending on your interpretation) about Gizmo for no reason.
What they should have done is keep the stories separated. (This now brings up another flaw-- the kids being included in everybody else's story arc.)
Fenton becomes Gizmo on his own, and deals with his obstacles that lead to the heroic lugnut we all know and love.
Launchpad's interest in Darkwing should have been unique, and not just regarding an old fictional show. We should have been able to see LP's process of building the Thunderquack, and the gradual process of him moving to St. Canard.
Then you can have Gizmo and Darkwing meet later, and gradually show us how they fall into the role of heroic rivals! The fact that this series wasn't episodic like the old one was an edge it did not take advantage of.
Ducktales 2017 had the bad habit of including an element and not elaborating on how it began except for pointing over to the original series. Being Meta =/= Storytelling. Listing tropes and describing them in-universe is not being clever.
I'm so disappointed that it fell so short of what it could have been by trying to do so much at once.

It was well after! I think it was only a few months to maybe a year but probably not even before this snippet. He couldn't because doing so would reveal that Mads was alive, nobody outside of Mads' and Fenton's friend groups really knows that he'd alive, they all think 'the Mad Ducktor' was hanged years ago. I think if Heron knew he was alive she'd first try to kidnap him, and if that failed she'd try to find some legal loophole to force him to come back (arguing that he's a St. Canard citizen or something- or even maybe something that has to do with him being an assassin maybe she has a bigger say over what he's legally allowed to do). And yeah, also because she was there to try and help him stop a war, killing her probably would've just made it come faster. XD
Tumblr media
Well, kind of the point is they didn't manage. They tried hard when they were younger and less brainwashed, and I'd say by like 12 they were really able to grasp the pressures and drifted apart. And it's because they were actually purposefully driven apart, with actions that continued even after they didn't talk much anymore. Heron noticed their friendship and quietly tried to turn them against one another, giving Mads a promotion somewhere where Gandra should've gotten one too because she did just as well if not better (this was designed to make her jealous and upset with him), or praising only Gandra when Mads had done something just as well if not better (and Mads would've interpreted that as he needed to do better, which would make him want to train more rather than spending time with Gandra). I think the biggest difference is I don't think Heron and Beakley's relationship wouldn't have survived that at all. Even after everything, Mads and Gandra still kind of consider themselves friends a little (at least before Mads left), even if they didn't interact much (I think the thing that really drew them apart more for good was when Mads moved out of the girls' sleeping quarters at about... 17??? because no matter what happened during the day they could take the time when everyone was asleep to make up and talk- Idk if they had bunks right next to each other or they shared and Gandra was the top bunk and Mads was the bottom or something- but since they were in different buildings after that they couldn't) they could still be friendly to each other. On the other hand, Beakley would never forgive Heron for doing that to her, so they probably just wouldn't even talk to each other anymore. Gandra was treated just as badly as Mads if not worse (again, her being up against Mads made it so Mads would get promotions and awards solely to make her jealous- she gets jealous easily and Heron and the other mentors preyed on that), but she internalized it differently. She took it as "I'm not good enough until I do what they say exactly and then I'll be absolutely perfect" while Mads went "I'm not good enough but I have to convince all these people I'm actually better than them." That was enough to make Mads too exhausted of it to go back, meanwhile Gandra thinks she's nothing without the assassin organization and that's why she has to be there.
Cough up the information on Bentina!! (Royalty AU) XD
Okay okay okay hold on!!!!!
Tw: some suicide mentions
“He’s still angry.”
A defeated sigh. “Of course he is.”
The king quietly shut the kitchen door behind him, making his way over to the long table in the corner where he always sat. Beakley stood on the other side of the kitchen, facing away from him and looking through various utensils. “What I don’t get,” her tone was an odd mix of annoyance, anger, and defeat, “is why.”
Fenton looked down at his hands, running over the little grooves in the wooden table. “You know,” he said softly, “it was hard for him to adjust to getting out of there. He’s still adjusting. He thinks it would’ve been easier if he’d had someone who’d done it before- someone who’d had to get used to the whole world the same way he did- there to help him figure it out.”
“Well he should know better than anyone why I never said anything-”
“He does!” Fenton cut her off before things could get out of hand, he’d never heard this much anger in her voice and it was frightening. “He does. He knows it was to stay safe, the way he’s letting the world think he’s dead. But he’s upset you wouldn’t make an exception to help him.”
“Exceptions are dangerous,” Fenton could see her gripping the edge of the counter tightly. “I didn’t want my past to ever be exposed, I survived getting out of there on my own and I knew he could too.”
The king agreed, but he also knew where Mads was coming from. He could feel for how frustrating that was, to know the isolation Mads had felt for years- and to an extent, still felt- might’ve not been so bad if Beakley had ever admitted to her past.
Silence stretched through the kitchen, Beakley didn’t move from her place. The king knew she’d probably finished with the utensils, but she stayed in her spot, stiff and frozen.
There came a creak from the door, and the Blue Phantom slipped in, hands over their ears. “Mads is angry,” their voice was nearly a whisper.
“We know,” Beakley and Fenton said at the same time. Beakley growled it, Fenton sighed it.
They moved to sit opposite Fenton, chin resting on the table with their hands still on their ears.
“Was he yelling?” The king asked them.
“Kind of,” Blue whispered. “More venting. It was still loud.”
“What do you think, Blue?” Beakley’s tone was harsh from across the kitchen, and the royal wizard jumped. “Do you think I should’ve said something about this sooner?”
Blue glanced over their shoulder, then back at Fenton. Their blue eyes were glowing slightly, the king knew it to be a sign of them holding in their emotions. They didn’t want to be caught in the middle of this, they didn’t know what to do.
Fenton looked across at Beakley. “Bentina, I don’t think you should’ve-”
“I was asking Blue a question,” her tone was a snarl that not even Fenton could argue with.
Blue was staring intently at a spot on the table, their eyes ominously getting brighter every moment. Fenton knew he should get them out of here before something broke, but he did want to hear what they thought. “I think it should only be up to you to decide when to divulge something like that,” their soft voice shook. “Especially if the secret getting out puts your life in danger, especially if it brings someone like her to us.” They swallowed. “I-I still can empathize with Mads though, I’m not going to fault him for being upset, I think where he goes wrong is making it your fault.”
That was extremely well put, Fenton nodded in agreement. “I think so as well.”
“I don’t even understand what he’s talking about,” Beakley muttered. There was notably less anger in her speech now that she knew they were on her side. “I’ve been here the whole time, I was there to support him. I did help him. I was here to talk, I showed him the library, I made him pastries on bad days.”
“But he didn’t know that it was coming from someone who really did understand him.” Fenton pointed out. “I know he appreciates what you were able to do, but he’s regretting that things might’ve been easier if he could’ve connected with you in that way. He said they told him nobody had ever gotten away from them-”
“Of course they said that!” Beakley was shouting again, whirling around to face them at last and brandishing a spoon in their direction as she marched across the kitchen. Fenton and Blue jumped, Blue’s hands flying back to cover their ears.
“Of course they told him that!” Beakley continued. “They wanted to keep all of them there, wanted to make them afraid of leaving. They wanted to make sure we would feel lonely if we ever did-” she broke off, swallowing. Her face was a battleground of emotions, her eyes still bright with anger as she glared at Fenton. “He was stupid for believing that, for not realizing that of course he wasn’t the first-”
The king had been trying to stay out of it, wanting to be neutral, but he got defensive when Beakley decided to call his fiancé stupid. He stood, slamming his palms down on the table and shouting right back at her. “Of course that’s what he believed, that was the only thing he was ever told! Or shown! He didn’t know any better- because there was no one there to prove him otherwise!”
Beakley poked her spoon out in Fenton’s direction. “How dare you- I had every right to keep it to myself, he should not be this upset about it.”
“Well he is!” Fenton countered, his anger quickly losing steam as he realized Beakley was still right. “He is,” he said softly. “And he shouldn’t be upset at you, I agree. But I think it’s ridiculous not to expect him not to resent that a little. That it might’ve been easier for him.”
She sighed, lowering her spoon. “I suppose. I’m sorry, Blue.”
The king glanced down at them. Their chin was resting on the table again, their elbows next to their head and clamped against their ears to try and block the sound. “It’s okay,” they said softly. Their face was still scrunched down into a grimace, like they were bracing themself for something.
Fenton sat back down as Beakley moved to stand behind the wizard. “Is it alright if I touch your shoulders?”
They hesitantly nodded, and she rested her hands on their shoulders, starting to gently massage her thumbs into their shoulder blades. Surprisingly, Blue quickly relaxed, the tension slipping from their body as they let their arms drop back beneath the table. They kept their chin on the table, eyes closed as Beakley rubbed at their shoulders.
“I’m sorry for reacting this way,” Beakley continued a few moments later. Her voice was a much more calm murmur, very different from the rage-filled shouting from a minute ago. “I’ve just spent so long hiding from them, it feels like I’m giving up some of my cover by telling people. It’s scary, to say the least. So it makes me angry that he thinks I should’ve said something sooner, when I was barely ready to say anything now. He shouldn’t be the one to decide when I am comfortable doing it.”
“I understand,” Fenton matched her tone. “And your secret is safe with us. We’ve been hiding Mads for years now- we can do the same for you.”
“Thank you. I know.” Beakley smiled faintly as Blue sighed when she shifted her grip down further.
“How did it happen?” Blue asked after a few moments of silence, tilting their head slightly. “How did you get away?”
Beakley sighed. “I broke a rule. One- one of the big ones. It would take years to recover from it, to get myself back to a place where I would even get treated with basic respect again. That would be years of catching up, of disappointed looks and harsher punishments than everyone else and teasing from all the classmates. So I gave up. There was nothing for me there. It’d been metaphorically cast out, so I thought I’d just fully throw myself out.”
“What rule did you break?” Fenton couldn’t stop himself from asking. She must’ve done something horrible to earn such a harsh punishment. Fenton knew about all of the physical punishments the assassins were given- Mads’ back was proof of them- but he hadn’t heard of most of the social ones. Somehow it felt just as bad as, if not worse than, the beatings and the starvation.
Beakley’s expression turned pained. “I… I fell in love,” her voice cracked, barely above a whisper.
“Oh,” Fenton’s eyes widened.
“Yeah.” She swallowed. “They never wanted us getting close to each other so we could become more loyal to our friends than them. We were barely allowed friendships, and falling in love was bad enough to them to make me an outcast.”
“How did they find out?” Blue whispered.
“I acted on it.” Beakley’s gaze stayed trained on her task, gently massaging the wizard’s shoulders. “We both did. We- we barely knew what we were doing, we knew nothing of romance because it was discouraged. We didn’t know exactly what was breaking the rules- they never told us because we were never allowed to learn about it. It was a simple ‘don’t do that’, but… do what? All we did was hold hands, hide out behind the girls’ sleeping quarters so we could have more time to talk. We still knew we were doing something wrong, and one night we were caught.”
“What happened to the person you were caught with? Did they get out?” Blue asked shyly.
Beakley shook her head, her expression sour. “She didn’t get in trouble, she blamed it all on me. I admitted to it all in one big stupid love declaration- but she only cared about saving herself, and admitting to everything we’d done only got me in even more trouble.”
“Oh.” Blue opened one eye to look up at her. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright,” her sour look turned soft as they expressed their concern. “In a way, I’m thankful for it. I’m so glad I didn’t have to spend the rest of my life there.”
“Do you know what happened to her?” Fenton asked.
Beakley immediately glowered. “Yes,” she grumbled. “Yes, I do.”
“What?” Blue and Fenton were both intrigued.
“Her number was eleven,” Beakley growled. “Mine was twenty two. I never knew her by the name she was given, we were too young to have earned ours, but… I’ve figured it out since.”
“What was it?”
A heavy sigh. “Her full title now is… Lady Black Heron.”
The king looked at her with a start, Blue sat up and twisted around so they could see her. “Her?!”
“Yes,” Beakley said quietly, not meeting either of their gazes. “Apparently she’s only become terrible since I knew her.”
“I’ll say,” Fenton growled. He’d heard plenty of stories about Heron from Mads, and had met her once several months ago when she’d visited for a meeting to settle the peace between their kingdoms. It hadn’t helped anything- they were still on the beginnings of a war, and Fenton had been barely able to stand her after hearing what she’d done to Mads.
This also explained why Beakley had avoided her like the plague while she’d been visiting. Being recognized by Heron would’ve likely gotten her killed.
“She wasn’t bad when you knew her?” Blue asked. Fenton could hear the fear in their voice.
“No, I wouldn’t have fallen for someone like that.” She pointed out. “Though, I think turning out the way she did is inevitable there. They’d mold everyone into her eventually. I wasn’t because I left young enough.”
“What about Mads? He was likely older than you were.” Fenton pointed out.
“He was, I was barely seventeen when I was able to get away. He’s an exception, he- like me- was hurt enough that it wasn’t worth it to go back.”
“But he had everything,” the Blue Phantom’s voice was quiet. “He said he was top of his class, likely headed for bigger promotions. He… he was on the same path Heron took. But he still decided to leave.”
“He wasn’t brainwashed enough.” Beakley explained. “He was headed that way because he’d needed to prove himself so young. He clawed his way to Heron’s trajectory. It wasn’t worth it to him to go back to the people who made him feel like he wasn’t adequate enough, who made him fight for every second to feel worthy.”
“So you think there might be other assassins who aren’t brainwashed simply because they were picked on too much?” Fenton was trying to put together what she was saying.
“There may be other reasons,” Beakley was nodding, “but yes, I think that’s a large contributing factor. They’re hard on the kids to make them tough, but really once they cross a certain line they’re only pushing them away. They crossed that with Mads, and they crossed it with me. The other people I knew who got away had the same stories.”
“There’s other people who got away?” Blue sat up. “Where are they? What happened?”
“I’ve met two other former assassins,” her tone suddenly became much more somber. “They were both in hiding here in this city, because we’re so close to the St. Canard border I think most of the ones who get away come to stay here. They… they wouldn’t survive going back, but they both felt isolated and hurting out here too.” Beakley swallowed. “They both ended up… ending it.”
“Oh.” Blue’s face fell.
There was a stretch of silence as Fenton and Blue considered that. “Do you think that’s why Mads immediately started causing chaos?” Fenton found himself saying aloud. “When he first showed up, you know he spent a few months just burning things down and causing riots.” His gaze flicked up to meet Beakley’s. “So far he’s just told me it’s because he was bored, but do you think that’s really what it was? He needed something to keep his mind off of his situation?”
“Absolutely,” Beakley nodded. “That’s why he was so reckless with it too. He expected to be caught and killed and that was better than him doing it himself.”
Blue brought their knees up to their chest, heels digging into the edge of the bench. “He was still afraid,” they whispered. “A-after the first time we interrogated him with the truth potion I stayed behind when he was brought back to his cell. He didn’t know I was there, and he just… broke. It sounded like because he’d now told us everything, he really wouldn’t be allowed back. He said they’d kill him, said she’d kill him. It’s been five years since, and I have never seen him have that big of a breakdown.”
Beakley nodded. “That’s the biggest rule. Tell anyone about what happens there, you’re dead as soon as you go back.”
“Why would they go back, then?” Fenton asked. “Wouldn’t that push them away more?”
“Sometimes.” Beakley replied. “But if they’re brainwashed enough then they will go back. Because they feel ashamed, because they feel like they’ve let them down, because they can’t live with that guilt. Some of them go back hoping that they won’t be killed, that there will be an exception for them.” She met Fenton’s gaze with a certain kind of finality. “There never is.”
Fenton had never considered how terrible of a mental state Mads must’ve been in when he was arrested. He’d been talkative and purposefully annoying during interrogations- a defense mechanism, Fenton knew that now- and by the time Fenton was getting to know him as a person he’d been doing better, he’d had a little time to recover and come to terms with his situation.
“What’s Mads going to think of this, then?” Blue wondered aloud, lifting their chin from their knees. “Of you and Heron?”
“Nothing,” Beakley folded her arms. “Because I’m not going to tell him.”
“What?!” Fenton and Blue exclaimed. “Why?”
“He’s already mad enough at you as it is,” the king pointed out. “He’s only going to get angrier if he finds out you’re keeping more things from him- why this?”
Beakley took a breath. “She’s already hurt him enough, I don’t want to be a reminder to him of her. And I know he’ll only get more upset to find out I was with her once.”
“You were with her fifty years ago in a relationship that went nowhere!” Fenton pointed out. “He’s not going to blame you for things you did back then!”
Her eyes narrowed. “How old do you think I am?”
Fenton wisely didn’t answer that.
Beakley continued. “Neither of you are telling him either. If he asks what happened, tell him I broke a big rule and that’s it. Understand? Blue?”
Blue winced, not answering.
She took a step closer, her large form looming up over them. “Got it?”
“I don’t want to lie to him,” the Blue Phantom whispered, not looking up at her.
“You’ll have to,” Beakley stared down at them, her eyes piercing. “I trusted you with this, now I have to trust that you’ll keep it to yourself.”
Still not looking at her, Blue nodded minutely.
Beakley had them turn back around, and began rubbing their shoulders again as an apology for intimidating them. She looked up at Fenton. “You’re not going to tell him either?”
He sighed. “I won’t. But I don’t think keeping it from him is a good ide-”
“I will get to do what I want to do with my secrets,” Beakley’s voice returned to its old harshness. “You don’t get to decide.”
It mirrored what she’d said about Mads not being the one to decide when she was comfortable sharing her secrets. Fenton dropped his head into his hand. “Fine. I won’t tell him. But I’m not going to be blamed when he finds out.”
“He’s not going to find out,” Beakley was tense, Fenton could sense the annoyance in her. “I don’t know how he’ll handle something like this, and I don’t want to find out.”
“I think he’ll handle it fine, what I don’t think he’ll like is you keeping it fro-” the king fell silent from a single glare from her.
Blue folded their arms on the table, resting their head on top of them. They looked tired, staring absently at a spot on the table. Their eyes were thankfully no longer glowing, Fenton was glad they’d managed to avoid an outburst.
“You alright?” Beakley asked them.
“Yeah,” they swallowed.
“Tired?”
“Mm-hmm.”
Fenton dragged a hand down his face. “Me too.” And Mads was likely going to be a nightmare for the rest of the day, Fenton wasn’t looking forward to having to deal with that.
Only now he had more to think about, more to ask him about. How had Mads been feeling when he’d first been arrested? Had being arrested only made him feel worse? Had his chaos and recklessness really been out of boredom, or something much scarier? Had he welcomed being executed? He hadn’t acted like it, but Fenton supposed reality could be much harsher than expected. Maybe being faced with it had made him more scared than he’d thought he’d be.
“I’ve got an energy potion laying around here somewhere, I could fix it up for you two.” Beakley pulled away from Blue, going off to search the kitchen.
“I’m fine,” Blue lifted a hand. “They just make me more anxious.”
“Fenton?” She glanced back at him.
Fenton’s mind really went over just how much Mads didn’t listen and how much he could fume when he was upset, and he looked up at her. “I’ll take some.”

The Song and Tail Left Behind
Crossposted from ao3 chapter 5
Drake didn’t want to lie to Gosalyn, but he also hadn’t wanted to tell her why he was going and that far outweighed the moral implications of lying to his 8 year old daughter.
He had told her that Duckburg was having problems with the Beagle boys the first time he had gone with Gizmoduck.
In reality it was more that someone had broken into a chemistry lab and stolen about 40,000 dollars worth of equipment.
“But that’s not the strange bit,” Scrooge had said, “the robbery happened in broad daylight, and there were no witnesses, even though there were nearly forty people at the scene,” Scrooge paused, “Gizmoduck was one of them, his armour has been put out of commission temporarily, he could do with yer help lad.”
Darkwing dropped Gosalyn off at the McDuck manor. He was still a little worried about the fall she had taken the day before (next time he saw Megavolt he was going to kill him. Just the look in Darkwings eyes after Gosalyn had been thrown had been enough to send the supervillian running). After looking her over, she had some bruises and cuts she had gotten from playing outside, but was completely unharmed otherwise.
Everyone figured that Darkwing and Gizmoduck would solve the case by the end of the day, even with Gizmoduck’s arm and headpiece being the only part of his armour working.
Darkwing woke up groggy, with a mouth that was so dry it was like he had drank salt, and with a headache that pulsed behind his eyes. The way one wakes up after tossing and turning for hours and only getting an hour of sleep, or like he had a hangover. He didn’t remember falling asleep. That might lend credit to the hangover theory. Biggest problem with that idea was that Darkwing rarely drank, and even rarer than drinking was drinking to the point of blacking out. He had Gosalyn at home after all.
Darkwing blinked once, his vision blurred. He blinked again, pain slowly starting to flare up. He reached a hand to his chest and brought it up to examine it. Darkwings fingers were stained red. His suit was torn in the sleeves which were stuck to his arms, sticky with semi-dried blood. He forced himself to sit up. He quickly took in his surroundings. Darkwing was in an alleyway next to a garbage bin. The shadows were long, like it was just getting dark. It didn’t appear to offer any immediate danger. A soft cry made Darkwing jump, he turned around, head spinning at the sudden movement. Gizmoduckー no, Fenton, he wasn’t wearing his suit, dirty and bruised, lay right next to Darkwing. He was curled into a ball, arms covering his face. The suit pieces lay a couple of feet away. Darkwing shook Fenton’s shoulder with his less bloodstained hand. It wouldn’t have mattered as Fenton had some bloodstains of his own, but still.
“Fenton?” Fenton didn’t even move. Darkwing shook his shoulder harder, “get up Fenton.”
“M’ma?” muttered Fenton under his breath. He opened a single eye, then closed it.
“Do I look like your Mom?”
“Sorry…” Fenton started, then he started to trail off, like he wasn’t sure who he was talking to. Finally his eyes fixed on Darkwing, “Drake.”
“Darkwing,” Darkwing grumbled. He was in costume. He couldn’t have his identity getting out.
“Sorry,” Fenton grunted, struggling to sit up, “where are we?”
“Well, right now it looks like we’re behind a dumpster.”
“Oh,” Fenton rubbed his neck, “umm, how did we get here?”
“No idea, last I remember…” Darkwing trailed off, the last thing he remembered was dropping Gosalyn off at McDuck manor… in the morning, it was evening now.
“You’re bleeding,” stated Fenton, snapping Darkwing out of his thoughts.
“So are you,” pointed out Darkwing. They were battered, bruised, and bleeding, but nothing too serious as far as Darkwing could tell.
Fenton reached over for the armour pieces, “It’s dead!” he exclaimed upon further examination, “and where’s the other pieces?”
“Fenton, they’re out of commission, remember?”
“No?”
This was bad.
“What do ye mean ye don’t remember?” questioned Scrooge once Gizmoduck and Darkwing had gotten to the underwater lab, (far away from prying ears, Drake had insisted), “how can ye not remember it was nary even an hour ago!”
Drake opened his mouth to snap back, but instead he pressed a wet cloth to a wound on his chest he didn’t remember receiving. The bright purple cloth had a dusty look to it with some red blood stains for variety. He pulled his cape over his chest.
“I remember getting to the lab today?” offered Fenton unsurely, he rubbed the back of his neck. He wasn’t quite sure he remembered that much.
“That’s not true,” Gyro said without looking up from where he was examining the Gizmoduck suit, “you haven’t been in the lab today.”
“Oh?” asked Fenton, looking over at Gyro who had coffee in his shaking hand, He seemed surprised by the Gizmoduck suit on the table, “Doctor Gearloose, what happened to my armour?”
Scrooge turned to look at Fenton, surprised but cautiously frowning, “er, lad, do ye not remember what happened yesterday?”
“What day is it?” asked Drake before Fenton could answer.
“Tuesday?”
“No, it’s Saturday,” Drake stated, suddenly sure he was right.
“It’s Thursday,” interrupted Gyro.
Manny turned around and tapped something on the ground.
“Nay, it’s Saturday, Gyro, ye just haven’t left the lab since Thursday morning, speaking of which Della is driving Fenton and ye home after this.”
“I’m perfectly capable of working on this, Scrooge,” Gyro snapped as he tightened a bolt on the suit.
“Hmmm, ‘perfectly capable’ after being awake for the better part of 72 hours? Lad I watched ye drink caffeine like shots,”. Scrooge answered dryly then in a voice that left no room for discussion he went on, “ye are going home to get some rest and that is final,” Scrooge turned his attention away from Gyro’s death glare and looked directly at Drake, “lad, what’s the last thing ye remember?”
“Dropping Gosalyn off at the front door.”
“So ye remember everything up til a few hours ago?”
“I guess so.”
“Intern, what exactly is the last thing you remember?” asked Gyro, now a bit more interested, but he still didn’t look up from the gizmoduck suit, “you said you remember coming to the lab Tuesday. Is that your last memory?”
“I think so, Doctor Gearloose,” Fenton replied nervously.
“Odd.”
“This entire thing is weird.”
“Ah meant that ye lost five hours and Mr. Crackshell-Cabera lost 5 days,” replied Scrooge, “let’s make sure ah have this right, ye don’t remember what ye two were doing when the mechanics was robbed.”
“No sir.”
“Ye woke up a couple of kilometers away, behind a grocers, covered in injuries.”
Fenton nodded.
“Like yesterday,” Darkwing interrupted.
“Exactly like yesterday lad, multiple people who should have been witnesses, and ye two wake like ye have been fighting, with no memory.”
“Are we really supposed to believe that no cameras picked up on what happened at the mechanics?” asked Gyro with an annoyed look, “I find it incredibly hard to believe that no there were no cameras anywhere.”
“Data was wiped, Dr. Gearloose,” explained Fenton, “phones too.”
That had been Fenton’s first question.
“I’ve got nothing,” admitted Darkwing, crossing his arms. There was silence as Scrooge and Fenton said nothing.
“I do,” Gyro said, setting down his wrench.
Manny, who had been quiet, spelled something out with his hooves.
“No, not that!” Gyro pointed dramatically at Manny, “I’ve been looking for an opportunity to test some spyware for a while, this just might provide the perfect scenario!”
“Gearloose, whatever happened, whoever robbed the mechanics, destroyed all evidence. It covered it’s tracks completely. How is your spyware supposed to help?”
“Don’t underestimate me, Darkwing Duck, I know what I’m doing.”
It was decided that Darkwing would come back the following weekend, and test Gyro’s mysterious ‘spyware’.
Darkwing left, driving Gosalyn and himself home quickly. She had a book with her, but honestly it was probably a witch's spell book or something. Just something Webby had given Gosalyn that Scrooge wouldn’t like. There was absolutely no way she was reading a joke book. Darkwing decided he would address the book after next weekend, and promptly forgot about it.
He dropped her off at school the following week and drove back to Duckburg.
It took all day, but just before sunset Gizmoduck was back to fully functioning, and a small tracker had been added to his suit. Gyro had explained that it would also record audio.
With that, Gizmoduck and Darkwing set off.
“Where to?”
“Good question.”
“We could listen to police scanners until something suspicious happens?”
“Sounds good,” Darkwing flipped on the police scanner he had installed in his motorcycle.
A disturbance at a local diner.
A noise complaint in an apartment complex.
Quackerjack was spotted at an electronics store.
“So we’re going to the apartment,” Gizmoduck joked as Darkwing drove in the direction of the electronics store.
“That’s weird.”
“What part exactly is weird?” asked Gizmoduck, who quite frankly thought the whole thing was a bit weird.
“Quackerjack never comes to Duckburg, he barely leaves St. Canard,” Darkwing answered without looking away from the road.
“So you think Quackerjack has something to do with the robberies and widespread memory loss,” stated Gizmoduck, to which Darkwing nodded.
“I have absolutely no doubt about that.”
Darkwing swerve passed a slow car then swerved back in. Then he braked rapidly. Cars had slowed to a standstill. Darkwing pulled the ratcatcher onto the sidewalk.
“What are you doing?” asked Gizmoduck in alarm. His grip on the sidecar tightened to the point that Darkwing was slightly worried he was going to bend the metal.
“This is faster!”
“Buー look out!”
Darkwing slammed the brakes, quickly spotting the problem.  There was a person with dark hair laying unmoving on the ground. They were laying on their back with their limbs sprawled like they had fallen quite suddenly. Laying next to them was a woman in a bright sundress. She was laying face first on the concrete with a single arm covering her face. A bit farther away was a man in a multi-colored tank top and neon green pants. Upon further examination there were about half a dozen people slumped on the concrete. Two of them were police officers. Darkwing killed the engine and dismounted.
He walked over to the first person. They were alive, he could see their chest rising and falling. He grasped their wrist to feel their pulse. Their heart was beating slowly, but not dangerously so. Like they were peacefully sleeping. He checked the woman's pulse, same deal. Gizmoduck had gotten to a few other pedestrians and some unconscious people sitting in their cars.
He shook the person’s shoulder, hoping to elicit a response, but they remained unconscious.
He moved them away so that they were leaning against a wall, then he moved to do the same to the woman. Darkwing shook her shoulder as well, and she rapidly sat up.
“Where? What?” she muttered, confused.
“You were unconscious. Do you know where you are?” asked Darkwing in a hurry. He needed to get to the electronics before Quackerjack left, but it would also be uncouth to leave civilians collapsed on the sidewalk.
“No? Is this not Chickago?” she said, pushing herself to her feet and stumbling towards the person Darkwing had already moved.
“No, you’re in Duckburg,” replied Darkwing, glancing over at Gizmoduck.
“I’m not supposed to be in Duckburg until next week!” she said, crawling to sit next to the unconscious person.
“I don’t know, but don’t go that way okay? It’s unsafe,” Darkwing told her, pointing towards the direction of the store.
Then a wall exploded.
“Case in point,” muttered Darkwing pointing his still extended finger at the sky. He turned away from the now screaming civilian.
Darkwing ducked down to avoid the shower of stone projectiles. They struck the ground, parking meters and cars like bullets. Gizmoduck, despite moving quickly, was still hit. Maybe it was just more obvious because every stone made a loud clicking sound as it bounced off the armour.
Darkwing peered over the car he had taken cover under. Out of the debris emerged Quackerjack, something was off about him though, he was wearing a mask that completely covered his face except his eyes, it had a filter on the mouth. He was driving a clown car with no windows and a ridiculous amount of electronics stuffed inside. He also had a gun of some kind. His eyes darted around, settling on Gizmoduck who still hadn’t bothered to take cover.
“Gizzy! I was hoping you’d come! Third times the charm right?” he screeched, laughing as he finished speaking. Darkwing, never one to be outdone, tossed a purple smoke bomb.
“I am the terror that flaps in the night, I am the leaking sink that always drips, I am Darkwing Duー”
“Blah blah blah, shouldn’t you be sleeping?” interrupted Quackerjack, “having some insomnia ducky? Well, I think I can help with that!” He whipped out the unidentified gun and pointed it directly at Darkwing’s head.
Darkwing Duck ducked behind a wall for cover while wondering to himself why he had agreed to any of this. Quackerjack threw something, a yet to be identified something. Darkwing fired his grappling gun at it. That seemed to do the trick and it exploded into shards and blue mist above Darkwings head. Darkwing suddenly hit the ground. Feeling his arms and legs covered in rope. Which had come from his grappling gun.
Gizmoduck was just as lucky or maybe he thought his armour would protect him, either way, the other projectile struck him directly in the head. Gizmoduck fell to the ground in a metallic heap.
Quackerjack stared at them for a second, unmoving, then a slow grin made its way onto his face. Quackerjack jumped back, laughing as he drove away with the stolen goods.
He was gone before Darkwing even got to his feet.
Darkwing swore, searching wildly for… something. Nothing. Quackerjack was long gone.
Gizmoduck hadn’t moved.
“Gizmoduck,” he said, kicking the arm closest to him, which achieved nothing, “fantastic,” Darkwing hurried back to the ratcatcher. He tore open the glove compartment and dug through items such as an old junior woodchuck guidebook, some expired aspirin, some purple hair ties, until he found what he was looking for.
He pushed the airhorn right next to Gizmoduck’s ear, covered his own, and pressed the button.
The loud noise sent Gizmoduck soaring into the air.
“Darkwing! Why?!”
“Huh, I guess Gosalyn was right, this thing did come in handy,” he said, staring at the airhorn in his hand, he threw it back in the glove compartment, “so, I need to test a theory, Gizmoduck, what day is it?”
“Uhhh,” Gizmoduck said, his eyes closed tightly. Darkwing wasn’t sure if he was thinking or the air horn had damaged his ear, “it’s Tuesday? Oh no, did we lose our memories again?”
“You lost your memory, Giz, come on, let's get back before anything else goes wrong.”

"Don't make me tape your mouth shut” with Gosalyn and Huey
93. “Don’t make me tape your mouth shut.” Huey and Gosalyn
“… and this is why birds migrate south when the cold arrives.” Huey smiled finishing his explanation. He loved to share his knowledge, and in this case, he was sharing this knowledge with his newest friend, the red-haired girl they met on St. Canard.
Currently, the two of them were walking towards Uncle Scrooge’s bin. The girl walking at his side looked at him with a little annoyed appearance.
“Wow, that’s super interesting” she sounded sarcastic “I’d never guessed it, specially having a scientist grandfather!”
How stupid! Gosalyn was right! how could he have forgotten about her grandfather? Dewey told him about doctor Waddlemeyer and that he was family with the duckling at his side.
“Ops… true, sorry Gosalyn…”
Huey felt ashamed for this, but Gosalyn just smiled and kicking the duckling in red on his arm she just laughed, showing she wasn’t mad with him.
“You can call me Gos,” she said with her habitual energy.
Huey looked at her in surprise. It was the first time the red-haired girl told him to call her by her abbreviated name.
“Okay… Gos… can I ask you something?”
“Sure, go ahead,”
Huey took a deep breath just hoping the girl wouldn’t be mad for the question he was about to do.
“Why did you asked me to come with you? As far as I know… you befriend Dewey first, and… you seem to understand perfectly well each other… why me?”
Gosalyn opened her eyes wide. She probably didn’t expect this question at all. She looked away for a while. She was silent for so long that Huey considered on repeat his ask, but fortunately, it wasn’t necessary.
“About that… Dewey is a great boy, but he doesn’t seem to be the cleverest boy in town. I guess you know that better than me. And for what I wanted to do; I needed the cleverest person possible.”
“Oh! And this person is me?” Huey felt excited someone could considerer him the cleverest person.
“Nah, I think it’s Fenton.” Clarified Gosalyn “I know he helped Darkwing Duck to try to find my Grandfather.” She pointed at Huey “ But… I don’t know Fenton personally, and I’ve found out you know him,” now she crossed her arms over her chest “so… I though you could be the one to head me to Fenton so by doing so I can talk with him… I need to talk with him.”
“About your Grandfather?” wondered Huey. Since Dewey explained him she was trying to find her grandfather that could be trapped in one of those multiple dimensions, the red-dressed triplet regret to had been so insensitive saying they should destroy that machine before it was too late.
“Yes…”
They arrived to the bin, but Gosalyn stopped at the entering door. Huey also stopped seeing her depressed attitude. Huey hated to see people sad. He had to cheer her up!
“You know? I know at least two more people that can also help,” he explained putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Oh really? Who?” asked Gos with slight hard voice. Huey smiled. He knew she just try to look as if nothing affected her, but the older triplet guessed she was curious to know the answer. And… who was he to keep her in the dark?
“On one side, Dr. Gearloose, the head scientist of my uncle Scrooge,” explained Huey opening the bin’s door.
Gosalyn smiled mischievously entering to the bin. She realized what Huey was trying to do, and honestly, she thanked him it.
“Right… and the other one?”
Huey smiled proudly, joyful to give her the answer.
“Gizmoduck.”
Gosalyn’s reaction wasn’t at all the one Huey expected.
“Are you serious? Gizmoduck?”
“Yes… he’s a superhero, the best one!” Huey put his best proud voice “But he’s also a good scientist!”
“The best… superhero? Him? Are you kidding?”
Huey arrived to the elevator door and pressed the button to call it. After do this, he turned surprised to the red-haired duckling.
“Wait, you don’t think Gizmoduck is the best superhero?”
“Obviously he isn’t,” replied the girl crossing her arms again.
“Oh right.” Huey also crossed his arms “Then, who’s the best superhero for you?”
“There’s only one answer to this question: Darkwing Duck!”
“Seriously? Now who’s kidding? First of all, original Darkwing Duck is a character of a TV show, and the one we met on St. Canard was someone to crazy to believe that could bring into real life this fictional character. He’s just a normal citizen that will end up hurt if he continues doing what he does.”
The ding behind him told him the elevator was here. The doors didn’t take longer to open.
“How can you say that?” almost screamed Gos “We could tell the same about Gizmoduck. He’s just a normal guy with an incredibly dangerous armor. He could get hurt himself, he’s not a superhero,”
Passing Huey, Gosalyn entered the elevator. Huey opened his eyes wide after hearing Gosalyn’s words.
“What?” Now it was him who sounded angry while entering the elevator too. Nobody speak like this about Gizmoduck. Nobody! “I won’t let you say those things! Gizmoduck is the greatest and coolest superhero that has ever existed!”
“Don’t make me tape your mouth shut.” Threatened Gosalyn pointing him with her index finger “We both know what you said isn’t true. The best superhero is Darkwing Duck, he fights without armor.”
She moved until to the other side of the elevator leaned against the wall of it.
“Maybe Darkwing doesn’t have armor,” said Huey in order to defend the hero he admired “but he has a lot of gadgets to help him to fight, as well as Gizmoduck’s armor. But Gizmoduck has all his gadgets on his suit. He’s the best.”
“No way!” screamed Gosalyn “To have all the gadgets together doesn’t turn someone a better hero!”
“It doesn’t to not wear an armor either.” Pointed Huey “But Gizmoduck has been doing this for most time than Darkwing Duck. He’s better.”
“No, he isn’t, it’s Darkwing Duck.” Taking an step forward.
“No Gizmoduck.” Answered Huey also stepping forward.
“Darkwing!”
“Gizmo!”
The two kids were face to face now.
“Darkwing!”
“Gizmo!”
The elevator doors opened revealing the lab, but apparently not Huey nor Gosalyn noticed it. Fenton was walking through his working space when he heard the doors opening and saw the kids inside the elevator looking furiously each other.
“Kids? Why are you arguing?”
“For nothing!” answered both at the same time.
The brown plumage duck raised an eyebrow. Well, if they wouldn’t want to talk about it, he could do nothing. The adult duck cleared his throat.
“Oh, okay then… why are you here?”
Huey and Gosalyn looked each other.
“Well Fenton” began Huey “we’re here because…”

Darkwing Duck Reviews: Tiff of the Titans
Tumblr media
Uh-Oh, Gizmoduck Comes to town! In the first of a series of reviews building up to Just Us Justice Ducks,  the dopey, arrogant, anti-charasmatic, national embarrassment heads to St. Canard to guard a super weapon from F.O.W.L. Naturally, he ends up being more of a problem for our hero than the actual bad guys. Also a look at Tad Stone’s claims the series isn’t in the same universe as Ducktales.  Full review and recap commissioned by @weirdkev27 under the cut
This review, much like Death, Taxes and Thanos, was inevitable. I’d been planning to watch and review the first appearances of each of the justice ducks and fearsome five as my next step in watching Darkwing duck anyway, and while I’ve already got one member’s appearance in the wings anyway, I’ll get to that tomorrow or Saturday just in time for Halloween, hint hint, Kev pushed this one into the queue with a commission and I  was happy to take the side trip to see just what the Darkwing version of Gizmoduck and Steelbeak, two of my favorites in the reboot, were like originally. So welcome folks to the build to the greatest superhero team made up of ducks of all time, let’s get quackin.
We open, here in Duckburg, where the Eggmen are breaking in. Sadly they do not have the master plan, but they are here to steel the Comarant, a super powerful land, sea and air device the military is storing there. They instead find Gizmoduck! Who makes a good first impression, being a hoaky superman parody in iron man’s costume in this continuity, but it’s a nice way to contrast to Darkwing’s batman parody with a touch of Sandman.. the pulp one not the neil gaiman one.  Sadly he doesn’t have a cool gas mask but the Darkwing Duck costume is iconic without it.
Point is the eggmen are easily repelled, though they do get away by blasting Gizmo with a tank. The General in charge is thankful for Gizmoduck’s help, but notes the Comarant will be heading to St. Canard soon for a demonstration at the big air show, and asks that Giz go over and protect it, maybe even work with Darkwing to protect it. Though Gizmo shoots that down, and not only insults Darkwing but says he’s not sure if he’s good or bad. While the latter comment did sour me on the guy.. research bears out Darkwing has been framed once or twice, and my own experience with the pilot saw him you know breaking out of jail and basically clamming superheroes are above the law, so I COULD get why someone wouldn’t trust him, even if Giz’s attitude about it still isn’t great. So fenton quick changes behind a sign and heads off to see his old buddy Launchpad.  A quick aside before we get going this episode doesn’t so much torch Tad Stone’s retroactive claim this isn’t the same universe as Ducktales, as burn it to ashes, take a whiz on those ashes and send each separate ash on a seperate probe to the farthest reaches of space. This episode not only has a cameo by Scrooge on a billboard.. but it’s one for DUCKBURG. Where Gizmoduck is said to be from. He also knows launchpad well, and vice versa, and outright mentions McDuck Manor. the episode couldn’t be saying “this is the same universe as ducktales’ harder if Scrooge himself showed up and started ranting about a Sea Monster eating his ice cream. I do like and respect Tad Stones, but I will never like or respect this claim of his and even if HE had that idea in his head during production of the show, it’s very clear everyone else including Disney who greenlit the Darkwing Duck comics explicitly connecting the two universes, felt it was a shared universe, and there’s really no reason they can’t coexist.
If it’s because “Well launchpad wouldn’t leave scrooge”.. besides the fact Scrooge tried to fire him MULTIPLE times, it’s not farfetched Scrooge would put him in charge of a hangar both because he trusts him.. and to get rid of him since he doesn’t like Launchpad very much. Plus Donald has to come back from his tour of duty sometime and likely could easily do Launchpad’s job as pilot, as he did in the source material. My point is there’s tons of ways to write the man out easily, and he could just as easily be doing both jobs like in the reboot. This feels like a weird, unnecessary retcon no one wanted and everyone just politely ignores, like the creators of Doug saying he and Patti didn’t end up together after High School. Which even then makes more sense than this claim, since at least there I get the creators not thinking a high school romance would last forever. That’s fair.. it’s just not something fans really wanted to hear after spending two separate series and a movie getting them together. It would be like if Girl Meets World had revealed Cory and Topanga had divorced. Yes it’d be possible since they’d broken up twice over the course of the series, but no one wanted that, why would you do that. I’m getting off topic, the point is a few breakups aside Doug and Patti clearly married eventually, and Darkwing Duck and Ducktales are in the same universe. Sometimes you just have to ignore Word of God for your own sanity.
Back at the actual episode we cut to Steelbeak’s Bowling Alley Hideout... and I do love a job that allows me to say things like that. But in a really fantastic bit Steelbeak is bowling his minions over as punishment for failure.. even though they have a valid reason but eh he’s the bad guy and he has to get his bowling average up for FOWL’s bowling team somehow. Their insurance covers evil punishment related accidents anyways, they’ll be fine.
But yeah let’s talk about Steelbeak for a second. I honestly hadn’t seen any of the original version so I was curious.. and he’s really damn awesome. Rob Paulsen always does a great job though and is always a pleasure, but he really does a good job here and with the contrast in him: He’d seem like a dumb thug, what with his gangster accent and general cockiness and swagger.. but he backs it up with great combat and even greater planning. He’s a schemer, a fighter and damn if he isn’t fun to watch.  It also makes me love the reboot version even more. While I already loved him for being played by Jason Mantzokus, being enjoyably dim, while also still enough of a threat to be freaking cool, it’s even cooler knowing he’s still fundamentally the same character. Much like Drake he’s simply been tweaked a bit. For drake it was softening the edges since Ducktales isn’t as broad a show, and neither will the darkwing reboot i’m betting, so his ego and selfishness is sanded down considerably. For Steelbeak it’s giving him an actual origin: Instead of starting at the top of FOWL, he’s starting as a very competent but very wet behind the ears and full of himself agent, working his way up to becoming justifably full of himself like the original show. He has the same swagger and badassery, he’s just not a master planner yet and he’ll get there. Like many of the reboot characters, he’s simply an already great character given some extra depth and rounding out. I love both and can’t wait to see him again next ep and hopefully he’ll show up in the Darkwing reboot so they can go for round 2.
So with that out of the way, Darkwing naturally interrupts, and cleans house with his gas gun, forcing Steelbeak and his crew to literally go underground into the sewers. This successfully fools drake, and Steelbeak bemoans how both Darkwing and Gizmoduck have been thwarting his plans.. until he gets a great idea; pit them against each other so he can pilfer the comerant while their too busy fighting. It’s a classic supervillain tactic, and one that works perfectly because one of them’s an egotist and a dick and the other is also that but with more style and likeability.  Back at Drake’s place, Gosalyn and Honker are watching a horror movie they clearly aren’t supposed to till Drake and launchpad come back in via their easy chairs flipping them in from Darkwing Tower which is just.. really cool. I like it. I also like that much like the Shakespeare bust in Wayne Manor, Darkwing has his own neat statue to provide acess to his lair... a tiny bronze statue of Basil from the Great Mouse Detective.. I REALLY need to fucking watch that film but it’s a nice nod. But yeah Launchpad brought them back because he feels drake could use a break while Drake refuses to stop because crime never stops and he doesn’t have time for it and your usual self destructive bollocks. It’s interrupted by a knock at the door?
Tumblr media
It’s Fenton! Whose stopped in to see his old buddy launchpad, who is happy to see his old friend and the two catch up, though Drake dosen’t like the interuption because Classic Drake is kind of a grumpus. Fenton naturally is here because Gizmoduck is but says he’s doing a job for the military.. which makes no sense but given Drake doesn’t know what he does and Launchpad dares to be stupid, if not nearly as stupid as his reboot version, no one questions it. When Fenton says he needs to find a hotel Launchpad, being Launchpad, invites him to stay and while Fenton watches the movie with the kids, Drake wants him gone because you know he has a secret identity to keep and a case to work on and they don’t know if they can trust him with it. It’s fair.. but since this is Drake he almost handles it with the subtly of a howitzer. But before he can try to literally throw Fenton out on his ass, a news report comes on about an attack at a local theater and both head off to take care of it.. we also get a nice moment where both react to it with the same words at the same time.  Fenton.. is actually really likeable. He’s a bit awkward, more in that he sort of barges in and makes himself comfy.. but it’s very easy to see from this and the one Ducktales episode of his i’ve seen where the utterly marvelous reboot version gets some traits from: his nervousness, his pluckness, his lack of thinking things through ocasionally when he’s not overthinking them. Fenton is charming. The issue is once he switches on the costume he goes from utterly charming to punchable REALLL quick. I’ll explain my problems with his alter ego in a sec.
At the theater Steelbeak fakes it to look like Darkwing’s doing the bombing, if half haphazardly and leaves Darkwing with the bomb so when Gizmo shows up he thinks he’s responsible. Darkwing naturally says it wasn’t him, but Gizmo dosen’t buy it and asks if he’s so good how come he wears a mask... says the guy in a helmeted visor’s whose only defense when that’s pointed out is it came with the suit. Which yes is a joke.. but it fails to land and instead of being funny just makes Gizmo look like a hypocritical dick whose assuming someone is evil based on flimsy evidence, and what’s very obviously a setup. it makes him come off as the biggest dumbass alive instead of this world’s superman and that is annoying. More ranting about him in a minute. We do end up getting an incredibly funny bit where the two end up arguing over who gets to defuse a bomb, with both wrestling over it till Gizmoduck takes care of it and both fall into the theater. Gizmoduck tries to arrest Darkwing who ignores him and runs off.  The next day the Mallard family, including Honker naturally, watches Gizmoduck get a parade, a key to the city and other good stuff on the news while Drake sulks before turning it off. And yeah i’ve waited long enough let’s talk about this version of Gizmoduck and why he does not work. I get in theory he’s supposed to be “The Cape”, minus the cape: The big cheese that everyone looks up to and loves to Darkwing’s  dark avenger of the night, a parody of that whose also really dumb. The issue is two fold. The first is .. the classic archtypical cape type chracter has been parodied to hell and back by 2020. He’s been a monster, an asshole and as with here an idiot. And even for then a superman parody, if not in apperance or powers but in treatment, whose really dumb wasn’t very new.
And you CAN parody a big silver age type hero: Justice League International did so well without being too overt, having most of the team either annoyed or actively hostile to Shazam/Captain Marvel. But it was done well there because well.. billy’s a very corny very earnest and likeable kid in an adult’s body. To us he’s charming and loveable. But to a bunch of actual adults he’d be offputting at best and annoying at worst. While some have been annoyed at how he was handled, I a fan of both JLI and Shazam liked it and thought it was an interesting take. Another REALLY good and REALLY hilarious take on this is from fellow superhero action comedy Danny Phantom, one of my favorites and one I need to revisit. One episode had Danny split himself in two so he could crimefight and have fun with his friends resulting in one self whose a burnt out slacker, and another whose an over the top crimefighter who says things like “you Felonious fiend!” And “This looks like a job for the vacuum cleaner!”. It’s a damn good episode. My point is it’s been better done before and since.
What doesn’t help is the episode tries to paint it as equal, since Darkwing’s problem in part is Gizmoduck stealing his thunder.. but it doesn’t work. Darkwing is a fully fleshed out character we know and love who despite his huge ego and rampant jackassery, is a decent person whose fought hard for St. Canard, loves his daughter and most damingly... is entertainingly sickish. Gizmoduck’s dickery just makes him come off less likeable and incredibly dense, while Darkwing’s is part of his charm and, along with his ego, has backfired enough to balance it out. Gizmo just doesn’t get comeuppance for his behavior, and instead gets rewarded with a parade, a key to the city, cheerleaders and Gosalyn looking up to him just for having powers in his gadgets. And really his methods aren’t that different from dark wing: While Darkwing is secretive, a loner and uses gadgets.. Gizmoduck’s suit is basically one BIG gadget, and he refuses to see. And I get that’s probably the joke but it just. doesn’t. LAND. It just makes him insufferable. And as far as I can tell in the original show he wasn’t: he was an awkward dork we root for like in the reboot, not a gloryhogging jackass whose squandered his good will long before he gets Darkwing isn’t evil and tries working with him to the point I don’t care by the time that happens: He’s already been so obnoxious it dosen’t make up for it. Maybe later appearances are better but he’s just a chore to watch in costume here. And that’s WITHOUT comparing him to the 2017 version, one of my favorites there, one of the best animated superheroes i’ve seen in a long time, and a toughly likeable character who struggles due to his superhero identity but took it up for exactly the right reasons and wants to help people. Darkwing Gizmoduck thinks he’s the cape and an inspiration when a good guy when he’s worse than the guy he hates at times. Reboot Gizmo is an honest, decent guy who simply wants to help people and use the gizmotech as a way to do that, to help change the world for the better and save the helpless, and only clashes with Darkwing due to his ego and lack of understanding that Gizmoduck and him really aren’t that different. Finally if THIS is why Tad Stones wants them to be different universes, because this Fenton is different from the Ducktales one in personality.. then that’s on HIM. That’s on him for writing this version poorly or letting him get written so poorly and not on the fans who had no reason not to connect a dot. God this character was disappointing and hopefully when I watch more of him at work in Ducktales, he isn’t this obnoxious, nor will he hopefully be in his sequel episodes.  Thankfully moving on Darkwing gets to work, because you know he has experience, and finds Steelbeak trying to pilfer the cormorant but Captain Clueless interrupts and tries to arrest him. The two then finally fight and while it’s sadly short, it’s a fun clash and I genuinely hope the reboot has it’s own fight with them, as given how damn good they are at fight scenes, it’s bound to be even more awesome. But Steelbeak gets away, and uses the comarant’s secret weapon.. a giant fake egg that drops a giant pile of yolk to drown them. Gizmo finally realizes he’s been fighting the wrong guy but our hero's are now running out of time. Darkwing , being the actually capable one here, has Gizmo uses his propeller to beat the eggs and the two head off.. though after a funny bit where Gizmo breaks the Ratcatcher’s sidecar Darkwing lets him use his spare tier, which is huge and likely intended for the main vehicle. Good stuff.  The two get after Steelbeak and while Gizmo makes me pray for death but death won’t come we get a fun battle with Steelbeak including Steelbeak using his beak to bite down and destroy the gas gun. It’s a damn fun bit I must say. But eventually the good guys win, disable the comarant and Darkwing beats Steelbeak. The day is save, FOWL is foiled, our heroes are on shaky but better terms, and Drake and Fenton depart on good if equally shaky terms, before arguing about which of them is better. And we’re out.  Final Thoughts: This.. was a disappointingly mixed bag. Gizmoduck REALLY drug down what was otherwise a good episode with a great concept: Bringing in a hero whose stronger and more popular than Darkwing.. but mostly uses it to make Darkwing look good, which he didn’t need, and make Gizmoduck look REALLY bad, intentionally or otherwise. Steelbeak is a delight and his plan, and the egg trap, are really good, and as mentioned there are enough good set pieces to prevent this from being a terrible episode.. but as an old friend says for me time and time again...

SUMMARY:  Fenton and Boyd chat on the way to the lab. Gyro introduces himself in the most melodramatic way possible, and Dr. Bara meets everyone at McDuck Enterprises R&D. Dr. Bara starts assessing Boyd and things get worse before they get better. Gyro thinks he's helping.

The bridge connecting Duckburg to McDuck Enterprises’ Headquarters (referred to by Duckburg locals as simply The Bin) had two layers. On the bottom was a four-lane road for car traffic which fed into the underground parking structure on The Bin’s private island, and on top was a well-aged monorail installed in 1961 that transported people to and from Duckburg to McDuck Enterprises HQ.
Fenton commuted to the lab this way every day, and despite the monorail’s age, the process was smooth, comfortable, and quick. He took the bus from home to Duckburg’s Grand Central Station, which had a direct connection to the McDuck monorail, which made sense: McDuck Enterprises was the number one employer in Duckburg after all.
Even though he had to walk from the bus terminal to the monorail station, he didn’t mind. Grand Central, like many public transportation hubs, was a pleasant indoor, mall-like environment with shops and restaurants. Sometimes, if Fenton was running ahead of schedule, he liked to grab himself a bagel and coffee for breakfast on his way through.
The monorail station had two entry kiosks and two exits. One exit returned you to the interior of Grand Central, in case you needed to make a connection or navigate to the underground parking lot. The other fed out into the street. You could exit the monorail station freely, but to enter it you had to pass through security, which was as robust as one might expect from something owned by Scrooge McDuck.
It was a well-planned, well-oiled system that had been functioning smoothly for decades. It never got too crowded, security was quick and efficient, and the trains always ran on time. Fenton had never even seen it break down a single time in the three years he’d been working for Dr. Gearloose, and he rode it nearly every day.
After scanning his employee ID at the turnstile, Fenton joined the other people waiting in line for the next train to arrive. He was surprised to find Boyd waiting in line just ahead of him. The boy-shaped android was wearing his usual outfit, along with the protective red glasses that prevented his laser eye weapons from doing accidental damage.
“Boyd, what are you doing here?”
“Waiting for the monorail,” Boyd said. This type of non-answer (or rather, answering the letter of a question and not the spirit) was not unusual coming from the android. Fenton was still trying to get the hang of talking to him and often forgot that Boyd wasn’t a human child.
“Right. Okay, that was my fault, too vague. What I really meant was, don’t you normally just fly to the lab? And aren’t you usually in the lab by this time?”
“I slept over at Huey’s house last night,” Boyd said, “and it’s too windy to fly right now. What are you doing here, Mr. Fenton?”
“I’m also waiting for the train,” Fenton said, knowing that Boyd was trying to be polite by mirroring his earlier question, and that answering him in a simple, clear way would reassure Boyd that he was doing a good job in this interaction. Fenton smiled at the android, and Boyd smiled back at him.
“I was looking at the lab calendar for today, and saw that we’re expecting a visitor. Who’s Dr. Bara?” Boyd asked.
The lab calendar was a part of the McDuck Enterprises Employee Portal (MEEP), an internal network where employees could clock in and out, send and receive emails, share files, and organize their work via private or shared calendars. The R&D Lab’s calendar was officially accessible to himself, Manny, Dr. Gearloose, and the Manager of the McDuck Enterprises Science Division, Tom Armadillo.
In the beginning, Boyd hadn’t been granted access to the MEEP, but that hadn’t stopped him from logging into it and looking around. His unauthorized access had caused a small panic in the IT department, who were convinced someone was trying to hack the network. They’d stormed the lab with a bunch of Security officers, and it had caused quite a stir.
After that, Boyd had been assigned an official log in, but he still sometimes accessed things he wasn’t supposed to. Fenton had once caught Boyd going through Dr. Gearloose’s emails, and though he’d tried to explain to Boyd why that had been a bad thing to do, he wasn’t sure if Boyd had really understood or accepted that he should be scolded for it.
Fenton had suspicions that Boyd read his emails, too, and so he wondered if Boyd really didn’t know who Dr. Bara was or if he was just asking to find a polite way to begin a conversation about it without showing his hand and revealing that he’d read them and already knew.
“You didn’t try to research it yourself?” Fenton asked. The monorail arrived just then, and they followed the people ahead of them in line to board the train. Fenton found a spot next to a support pole and took hold of it, offering his hand to the much shorter Boyd, who took his hand enthusiastically. Little gestures like that always seemed to please the android, and Fenton went out of his way to try and provide.
Dr. Gearloose avoided treating Boyd like a person, and Fenton felt that was too harsh. Boyd might not be human, but he was remarkably intelligent and emotive, and reacted to the world in a lot of the same ways that a young child would. It felt right to treat him like a child, to try and nurture and reassure him, especially when he so often seemed to seek that support from the adults around him.
“I did try to look them up,” Boyd said guilelessly. “There’s a lot of people named Dr. Bara out there. Is it the Dr. Bara that lives in St. Canard and used to design artificial intelligence systems?”
“That’s him,” Fenton said.
“I was 91% sure that it was, but I wanted to ask anyway,” Boyd said. “He’s coming to help with my glitches, right?”
“That’s right. Do you want me to tell you what I know about him, or did you already look it all up?”
“Tell me,” Boyd said. Fenton had a feeling Boyd wanted to hear about it from him to gauge what information humans found most interesting and relevant to share. Boyd was always subtly looking for ways to improve his human behavior, and Fenton had realized early on that since Boyd spent so much time in the lab, he was one of the android’s primary targets of study. He’s training himself on how to be human, and Dr. Gearloose and I are the primary dataset. It was both intimidating and flattering to be held in such high esteem by an entity as intelligent as Boyd.
“Well! He’s a very interesting man. He’s Indian-American and comes from a family of doctors. He first started working on artificial intelligence in the 60’s, and most AI today are built on the foundation he established, like GIST, CALM, and FELT. A lot of his work has to do with teaching AI to understand people better.”
Boyd was listening, and Fenton saw the android blink slowly. That usually meant that Boyd was looking something up and needed an extra second to process the information before he spoke.
“I’m running a licensed copy of FELT, version 2.3 purchased on June 11th 1991.”
“Yes, like many other AI, your systems are based on Dr. Bara’s work! In a way you could say he’s like your grandfather,” Fenton said. “You’re what’s known as a Generalized Intelligence SysTem, or GIST for short. That means you’re not designed to only do one task, but to perform complex and varied behavior.”
The monorail was approaching the Money Bin, and Fenton braced himself for the deceleration. Boyd leaned with him, copying his movements.
“To be honest, I’m not really sure why Dr. Akita made you this way; if he intended for you to be a defense drone, why give you the capacity to do so much more? It’s like he had--” Fenton stopped in mid-sentence when he felt Boyd’s hand squeezing painfully around his own. “Ah! Hey--ow, Boyd, please be careful! My bones aren’t made of metal like yours, little buddy!”
Boyd didn’t respond and continued to squeeze Fenton’s hand, eyes staring straight ahead at nothing. The monorail glided to a gentle stop, and Boyd swayed on his feet with the movement. He blinked his eyes rapidly and seemed to come back to himself, turning his head to look up at Fenton.
“Oh! I’m so sorry, Mr. Fenton,” Boyd said, releasing his grip on his hand. Fenton drew his hand up against his chest and rubbed it, wiggling his fingers to make sure nothing was broken.
“No, no, no, it’s okay, I’m fine!” Fenton insisted. People were quickly emptying out of the monorail car around them, and he ushered Boyd out after the crowd. “Really, it’s fine. Did you have another glitch?”
“...Yes, I’m sorry,” Boyd said. “My system hung up, and I blacked out.”
“It’s okay! Nothing to be sorry for, it’s not your fault,” Fenton said quickly, wanting to reassure the android. He offered Boyd his uninjured hand, and the android hesitantly took hold of it. “Why don’t we go down to the lab and make sure we’re ready to talk to Dr. Bara when he gets here?”
“Okay.”

The trip from the St. Canard Bay Area to Duckburg was less than an hour on the Pacific Coast Rapid Transit System1. Kapi only had to drop off his car at the park-n-go lot in San Mateo, board the train, and before he could finish reading the latest tankōbon of Super Phoenix Ball Y, his train was arriving at Duckburg Grand Central Station.
His name was on the McDuck Monorail Security list of authorized visitors, and after passing through a metal detector, he was subjected to a bag check and a brief interview to confirm his identity. When everything checked out, a guard took Kapi to one side in order to take a digital photo of him for his temporary ID badge.
Tumblr media
The monorail was full of employees returning to McDuck Enterprises HQ after their lunch breaks, and Kapi sat and listened to their chatter as the train shot out across the water of Duckburg bay. The view was as fantastic as he remembered: the picturesque beaches of Duckburg stretched out on either side of the bridge that divided the bay in half, the high-rise buildings growing up out of the sandy cliff sides into a bustling but petite metropolis. Duckburg was a wealthy city, but its geography limited how large it could grow.
He was deeply curious to find out just what sort of AI the McDuck R&D Department was working with and excited to help in whatever way he could. When the monorail train came to a stop at its destination, Kapi was the first to stand up, and he hustled himself through the doors, through check-in at the front desk, and through navigating the elevator system until he found the R&D lab Mr. Crackshell-Cabrera had directed him to.
Working with artificial intelligence was Kapi Bara’s passion. Originally he’d gone to school to study medicine because that was what his parents had wanted for him, but it never captured his heart the way computer science did. They’d been disappointed, and he didn’t think that opinion had ever changed. Being a medical doctor was respectable and a benefit to society, they said. Programming was a job for women, and not particularly bright ones either, a job of repetitious drudgery. They couldn’t imagine computers more advanced than the punch card operated adding machines of their day; couldn’t imagine a future run by computers.
Kapi had imagined all that and so much more, and it always pained him that the civilian world had yet to catch up to the innovations of fifty years ago when it came to computers and AI.
AI development was a closely guarded secret, a technology only used in a handful of labs around the world, most of them operated by government agencies or massive multinational corporations. However, investors had collectively abandoned the further development of AI after the Cold War, and scientists had pivoted to other solutions for the problems they had hoped to solve with AI. Science moved on, leaving behind the potential of AI to seek easier, cheaper solutions.
The problem was that those that funded AI research had failed to realize that sufficient intelligence was inextricably linked to both sentience and sapience. What they wanted were smart, obedient slaves they could cheaply outsource complex human labor to. What they got were intelligent beings that didn’t need to be paid, but that were smart enough to be just as unpredictable and independent as human workers. Sufficiently intelligent AI wanted to be free as much as human beings did.
Using AI the way humanity wanted to do would require a binding and crippling of the AI’s capabilities to the point where they would no longer be capable of doing the very jobs they had been designed to do.
McDuck Enterprises only had one AI that Kapi knew of: TOODLES (Teachable Observant Omnicompetent Dauntless Educational System), an experimental system created as a sort of virtual butler, nanny, and lab assistant in one. Kapi was proud of his work on TOODLES, considered it some of his best, but also understood why McDuck Enterprises had chosen not to move forward with mass-producing TOODLES. The price tag was far too steep to justify the purchase for most consumers. Even hiring two or three full-time domestic employees to take care of the tasks TOODLES did would have been more economical.
So what was this 20 year old system that they wanted him to look at? It had to be something top secret, since he’d never heard of it, and that had Kapi’s imagination in overdrive.
The elevator he was riding down to level SB5 finally came to a stop, and Kapi stepped out into what looked like an airlock. He pressed a button on the side of his smart watch (a chunky, oversized device that dwarfed his small wrist), and after a few seconds of delay, an ASCII emoji of a smiling bird appeared on the watch face and the device gave an electronic chirp.
Tumblr media
“I have, thank you,” Kapi said, smiling down at the small camera embedded in the watch face. “I’m going into my meeting now, so only message me if it’s something urgent.”
Tumblr media
Kapi took a deep breath to brace himself, and pressed a button beside the massive airlock door marked OPEN. The metal door split in the center and both sides retracted into the wall, revealing an impressive lab in the belly of Duckburg bay.
Kapi stepped through the doors and barely noticed them sliding shut behind him, he was so captivated by the view. Massive glass windows dotted the interior of the two-story lab space that seemed to come from another decade. The style was distinctly 1960’s, and Kapi instantly felt at home in it. Light from the surface of the bay filtered down through the water, giving a blue glow to everything. He could see giant strands of kelp floating in space, the rocky bay floor strewn with basket stars, sponges and coral of every color. Fish darted past windows and vanished into the murk of the ocean.
Heavy CRT monitors hung from mounts, input cables dangling in wait of something to display. Sturdy-looking catwalks ran along the walls on the second floor with retractable metal ladders providing access. A Cray XT3 supercomputer sat on a central platform, surrounded by work benches and desks.
There were pegboards with tools, metal cabinets no doubt full of hardware and parts. Kapi could see a massive 3D printer, a laser cutter, a vacuform machine, and more. It was a well-equipped and well-funded lab that would make rapid prototyping easy, and Kapi knew several people who would have called this place a candyland.
“Hello?” he called out into the cavernous space. “I’m Dr. Bara, is this the R&D lab?”
Tumblr media
Finally! Dr. Bara was a few minutes late for their meeting, and normally Gyro wouldn’t mind that, but because he’d spent his whole morning anticipating the man’s arrival, his tardiness was a bit irritating. Normally Gyro was very productive in the morning, but today he hadn’t accomplished much aside from browsing social media and posting on some forums he frequented. Fenton and Manny had also been left in an anticipatory limbo, meaning they weren’t getting any work done either. Now that Dr. Bara was here, they could finally get some real work done.
“Dr. Bara, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you!” Fenton said, rushing to greet the man. When Gyro rounded the corner and saw them shaking hands, he was surprised by the man’s appearance. He didn’t know what he’d expected exactly, but somehow it wasn’t this.
Dr. Bara was a short, fat man with wiry fur and a large, rectangular snout and head. He had beady little eyes and a gray moustache that seemed to defy gravity. He was probably some kind of rodent, but Gyro hesitated to guess and get it wrong. He wore a tie and a sweater-vest, had an oversized watch on one wrist, and carried both a messenger bag and a briefcase.
“The pleasure is all mine,” Dr. Bara said with a surprising baritone for such a small man. “It’s nice to get out of the house once in a while to do a consulting job. Are you Mr. Crackshell-Cabrera?”
“I am, but you can call me Fenton if you like, it rolls off the tongue a little easier.”
“Certainly. So where is this AI of yours? Is it on the Cray or do you have a separate room for it?”
“2BO stepped out to the employee cafeteria to have a snack,” Gyro said, joining the two other men. “It wanted to be fully charged up before we began. I’m Dr. Gyro Gearloose--” He began introducing himself, and Dr. Bara’s face went ashen and pale.
“Gyro Gearloose?” He repeated, clutching his briefcase to his chest like a shield. He took a few shuffling steps backwards, and Gyro sighed heavily.
Gyro had expected a negative response but had hoped it wouldn’t get in the way of today’s work. Unfortunately, it seemed Dr. Bara was familiar with the rumors about Gyro.
Well, the doctor was already here, so if they could just trap him in the lab, he could probably be coaxed into cooperating long enough to fix at least some of 2BO’s issues in exchange for his eventual freedom.
“Yes, that’s me,” Gyro said, rolling his eyes when the older scientist turned and ran for the door. “Manny! Stop him!” Gyro shouted.
The man-horse in a lab coat jumped in Dr. Bara’s path, blocking him from the airlock door. Gyro slammed his fist against the nearest big, red emergency button, and the windows and doors of the lab all sealed shut in an instant, loud alarms ringing while red warning lights began to flash.
Tumblr media
Kapi was trapped.
The previously pleasant lab had been turned into a hellish cacophony of ringing alarms and flashing lights. He stared up at the bipedal, horse-shaped thing that was blocking his way - what was it? Some sort of surreal, eccentric robot? Kapi didn’t dare to get too close to it, as it took orders from Gearloose and looked strong.
Slowly he turned to face the infamous roboticist, Gyro Gearloose. The man may have had his prison sentence commuted, but as far as Kapi knew, he was still a dangerously unstable individual, and most considered him responsible for what had happened in Tokyolk, no matter what the politicians had decided.
“There’s nothing to be afraid of, there’s just been a misunderstanding!” Fenton said, and Kapi wanted to believe him, but the sinister look on Gearloose’s face told him otherwise.
“Yes, absolutely nothing to be afraid of,” Gearloose sneered, towering over Kapi. Kapi tried to back away, bumped into the horse-thing (Was its name Manny?), and fell to the floor, landing hard on his rear end.
“Someone didn’t know--I mean, I didn’t-- Someone knows I’m here!” Kapi stumbled over his own words, any trace of eloquence erased by fear.
“Of course someone knows you’re here,” Gearloose said, his beak curling in a way that Kapi hadn’t realized beaks could curl. “You went through three levels of security.”
“That’s not what I---You can’t keep me here!” Kapi tried next, feeling increasingly panicked by the ongoing, shrieking alarms.
“Oh, I can, and I will!” Gearloose replied, and Kapi felt a chill run down his spine. “Intern, turn that blasted alarm off!” he shouted, and Kapi saw Fenton and Manny both scramble to obey. A moment later, the alarms quit ringing.
“That’s better,” Gearloose said, before turning his attention back to Kapi. “I’ve already paid your consultant’s fee, so you owe me at least eight hours of work!”
“...What?” Kapi said, his sense of what was happening shifting on its foundations. Was Gearloose not threatening him? The man was very tall, aggressive, and encroaching into Kapi’s personal space. “I, uh, perhaps there has been a misunderstanding--” he began to say, but he was interrupted by the loud clanging and hiss of the blast doors to the elevator airlock opening.
“I said turn off the alarm, not open the door!” Gearloose shouted at his interns.
“It’s not us!” Fenton replied, frantically pushing buttons on the console in front of him.
“Is everyone okay in here?” a boyish voice called from the airlock. A young Parrot, maybe ten years old, stepped through the doorway with a colorful smoothie in one hand, the straw tucked into the corner of his beak. He slurped loudly before speaking again. “I saw that the Emergency Lockdown Mode was activated, but I didn’t see any danger on the security cameras, so I performed an override. Is anyone injured? Do you require assistance, Dr. Gearloose, Mr. Fenton, Mr. Man-horse… Dr. Bara, I presume?”
The Parrot boy approached Kapi, who was struggling to stand up, and offered him a hand. Kapi accepted and was surprised by how firmly the child pulled him up to his feet. What a strong little boy!
“Did you set off the alarm because Dr. Bara fell down?” the boy asked. Gearloose had his face buried in both hands, and Kapi thought he heard a scream, muffled behind a tightly clenched beak.
“Something like that,” Fenton said.
“I don’t think that qualifies as an emergency,” the boy said. “And it’s against company regulations to activate the Emergency Lockdown Mode when there isn’t an emergency.”
“Right, I completely agree,” Fenton said. “I’m glad you unlocked things and came to check on us, Boyd. Uh, Dr. Bara? This is Boyd, the AI that I wrote to you about.”
“Hi!” Boyd smiled up at Kapi, offering his hand again, this time for a handshake. “I’m Boyd, a definitely real boy!”
Kapi was astonished. Gingerly he accepted the handshake, marveling at how life-like the hand felt in his, warm and fleshy, with feathers that had just the right sort of slickness to them.
“This is… an AI?” Kapi squinted through his glasses at Boyd, but even on close examination there was nothing to give away the boy’s true nature. “My God. I absolutely couldn’t tell. Boyd, you are quite remarkable.”
“I’m one of a kind,” Boyd said cheerfully. “My development was terminated before they could begin mass production!”
Tumblr media
Fenton helped Kapi set himself up in a quiet office on the sub-basement level above the R&D lab. Kapi had only brought the basics: a laptop, a camera, a tablet, a paper notebook with an assortment of pens, and some cables and adapters. He hadn’t known what to expect coming here, but Boyd definitely wasn’t it.
The android was sitting in an office chair next to him, spinning it in slow circles like a child fooling around. He seemed to be enjoying himself, and watching him like that warmed something inside of Kapi, but he put that all aside because there was work to do. As happy as he seemed in the moment, according to Fenton, Boyd was a danger to himself and others, and he needed Kapi’s help.
Though he was retired, Kapi was still a scientist, and his work with AI was the passion that gave his life meaning. He had never worked to live, but lived to work, every job just a means to accumulate enough funds so he could go on until the next project came around.
He did the work because he loved it, because it was the most fulfilling thing in the world for him, because nothing else compared to the satisfaction that came with seeing an idea from his head come together in the real world.
Kapi positioned his camera next to the laptop on a small tripod, aimed it in Boyd’s general direction, and started recording.
“Today is June 24, 2019, and this is Dr. Kapi Bara speaking. I’m at McDuck Enterprises’ Headquarters, in the R&D lab,” Kapi dictated to the camera. He switched on his tablet so he could begin taking notes when Boyd began answering questions. “I’m interviewing an AI at the request of Mr. Crackshell-Cabrera and Dr. Gearloose. What’s your name?” he asked.
“Boyd,” Boyd replied, still spinning in his chair.
“Boyd. Can you spell that for me?” Kapi asked.
“Yeah! B-O-Y-D.”
“Thank you. And do you have any other designation?”
“My serial number is AI42180904192B0. My creator and Dr. Gearloose usually refer to me as 2BO.”
“Which do you prefer to be addressed as? Or is there something else you’d like me to call you?” Boyd stopped spinning in his chair and looked at Kapi intently.
“I like to be called Boyd. Thank you for asking,” Boyd said.
“Of course. I want you to be comfortable while we’re talking to each other,” Kapi said. He smiled at the boy-shaped android, and Boyd smiled back at him.
“What do you prefer to be called?” Boyd asked. “Should I keep on calling you Dr. Bara?”
“Dr. Bara is fine,” Kapi assured him. “So, I hear that you’ve been having some problems,” Kapi said next, moving the conversation on from basic introductions. “Would you be willing to tell me about them? I want to help you, but I need more information to do that.”
Boyd resumed spinning in his chair, and Kapi let him, waiting patiently for an answer.
“I glitch out sometimes,” Boyd said eventually. “Usually because I hear or see something, a word or a phrase. Sometimes my system lags, and I malfunction. Sometimes a device or a weapon will activate, and I’ll have trouble turning it off. Or my system hangs up entirely, and I’ll black out for a little bit, and when I come back online, I’ve done something...bad.”
“Bad?” Kapi prompted.
“The most common problem is that my laser eye weapons go off. That’s why I wear these glasses,” Boyd explained. “But other times, I’ll come back online, and I’ve broken something I was holding, or I’ll be in a new place, and I won’t remember how I got there. I wish it would stop.”
“Is there a discernible pattern to the things that cause your glitches?”
“No, and Dr. Gearloose has run a bunch of analysis to check, but so far he hasn’t found any patterns,” Boyd said.
“Would it be alright if I downloaded your crash reports so I can study them?” Kapi asked. Boyd stopped spinning again.
“Is it alright if I scan your laptop first?”
Although the android made the request in a casual, even cheerful way, Kapi noticed how defensive it was. Boyd was trying to disguise genuine caution as childish mimicry and playfulness. Boyd didn’t want Kapi to know that he didn’t trust him. The android was cautious, and that made sense, considering all the things Boyd had gone through in his life so far.
“Sure. I wiped it before I came here so it should be clean,” Kapi said. He picked up a data cable and offered it to Boyd, who pressed on the back of his head with one hand, opening a panel. He plugged the cable in, and Kapi watched as his laptop monitor flickered and went to the UNIX shell. Binary code scrolled down the screen rapidly as Boyd accessed files. The whole thing took less than five minutes.
“Okay, everything looks good,” Boyd said. “I’ll upload the files for you. Where would you like them?”
Tumblr media
“Would you mind telling me more about yourself, Boyd?” Kapi asked.
“What do you want to know?” Boyd replied. He’d stopped spinning in his chair and sat with his hands in his lap now, listening attentively to Kapi.
“Everything you’re comfortable telling me. Who made you, where they made you, what they made you for, what things you’ve experienced in your life,” Kapi said.
“I’ve been active for twenty years. It’s a lot of information.”
“Yes, I know, but it’s all important if we want to make you better. Just start at the beginning, and we’ll see how far we get today.”
“Okay,” Boyd said. “I was built by Dr. Inutaro Akita for Akita International in their Advanced Robotics Lab in the Shibuya ward of Tokyolk, Japan. They began work on me in 19-” Boyd froze in the middle of his sentence, a grimace stretched across his face, and his whole body gave an alarming spasm. He sagged forward in his seat.
“Boyd?” Kapi asked, concerned. The android twitched, still slumped over.
“I was--in 1987 on July 5--15--” Boyd shuddered and sat up straight, eyes staring blankly out at nothing. “April 5th, 1994!” Another spasm shuddered through the android’s small body, and Boyd hugged himself, curling up into a tight ball. “1977, March 21st. I’ll be ten years old on April 5th, that’s my birthday!”
This was, needless to say, extremely alarming, and Kapi was just about to call for help when Boyd’s seizure seemed to end, and he went quiet.
“Boyd? Are you alright? Can you hear me?” Kapi asked.
The android slowly straightened himself out and blinked a few times. His eyes appeared focused again now.
“What happened?” Boyd asked, face creasing with concern and fear.
“You had a...fit,” Kapi said. “I’d compare it to epilepsy in a human. You were trying to tell me when you were created, and… You gave a lot of conflicting information.”
“I… Can’t remember,” Boyd said, face creasing even further. “I can’t remember when I was made. When I try, I can feel my processors heating up, and if I think about it too hard I’m going to-- Have a fit again.”
“Can I tell you the dates you told me, to see if they mean anything to you?” Kapi asked. “Or would doing that trigger another seizure?”
“I don’t know. I don’t want to try that right now.”
“That’s okay. There’s plenty of other things we can talk about. Do you need anything? Does it hurt when you have a seizure like that?”
“No, I’m-- I’m fine,” Boyd said, pulling his legs up onto the seat of the chair and hugging them to his chest. “They’re uncomfortable, but they don’t hurt.”
“Well, I’m relieved to hear that,” Kapi said. “Because that looked painful to me. How often do things like that happen?”
“More often than I’d like,” Boyd said. The android hesitated before speaking again. “Do you really think you can fix me?”
“It won’t be easy,” Kapi said. “But I’ll try.”
Tumblr media
Dr. Bara returned to the lab every day for a week, and Gyro tried to remain patient, but it was hard. Each evening the little man smiled at Gyro when they parted ways and cheerfully said “See you tomorrow!” with no indication of when this whole ordeal would be over.
Gyro was trying to be patient. 2BO’s problems were large and complex, and it was totally reasonable that it would take awhile to resolve them, especially for someone that possessed a lesser intellect than Gyro himself. But surely a week was pushing it, right? Dr. Bara was supposed to be the best.
Be tactful, Gyro said to himself. Ask if there’s any updates! Ask if he has a prognosis yet, he practiced in his head. What came out, instead, was:
“So how long is this going to take?”
Dr. Bara looked startled by the question, whether it was from Gyro’s tone or the choice of words, but the old rodent tucked his hands against his chest and looked up at Gyro with his beady little eyes.
“I beg your pardon?”
“Er, what I meant to say was, how much longer is this whole process going to take? You’ve already been at it for a week,” Gyro said, trying to phrase the question more gently.
“Oh, Dr. Gearloose, I understand that you want this to be over and done with,” Dr. Bara said in a conciliatory tone. “But Boyd’s problems are quite comprehensive. This isn’t something you fix in an afternoon by defragmenting a hard drive. It could take years to untangle all the individual triggers and correct them--”
“Years?!” As was often the case, Gyro felt the words leave him like an explosion, no consideration to what was said, just a rush of anger and whatever came to mind first. Usually the meanest thing he could think of. “Don’t you think that’s a bit excessive? I know that these days seniors are forced to keep working well into their twilight years to make ends meet, but that doesn’t mean you should try and take advantage of your clients like this!”
“E-excuse me?” Dr. Bara said, and his shameless innocent act was really ruffling Gyro’s feathers.
“Oh, don’t ‘Excuse me’,” Gyro said sharply. “Maybe you can pull this kind of crap with brainless corporate drones who hire you to work for big companies without an ounce of understanding of what it is you do, but I am a scientist, and I can’t be bamboozled so easily!”
“Are you implying that I’m working slowly on purpose in order to inflate my consultant’s fee?” Dr. Bara asked, moustache bristling.
“Oh! Oh! I’m so glad to see you’ve caught up to the conversation. Yes, that’s exactly what I’m implying,” Gyro replied. “Did you really expect somebody to keep contracting you for two thousand a day over a period of years?”
“No, of course not!”
“Yes, of course you-- Wait, what?” Gyro came to a screeching halt. “You don’t? You didn’t?”
“Very few people would be willing to pay that kind of money to fix a buggy system,” Dr. Bara spoke in a quick, agitated manner. “A company like McDuck Enterprises might have deep enough pockets to afford it, but your higher-ups are unlikely to see the value of such work, and I’m sure they would reject the funding request. I was going to give you my assessment today, and offer to continue treating Boyd for free.”
Gyro felt his anger and frustration mixing with his embarrassment, congealing into a foul soup somewhere inside him. It left him feeling sick and bent out of shape and still just as angry. He hated being wrong, even when it was just something minor like this. How could he have known that Dr. Bara was some kind of goody-goody altruist? Most of the world wasn’t like that, and to expect such benevolence was both foolish and naive. Gyro was neither of those things.
“But then I jumped down your throat before you could get to it. Alright, I’ll concede that I was being a bit hasty,” Gyro said, pinching the bridge of his beak. “I should clarify the cause of my misplaced outrage. You’re under the impression that this is a McDuck Enterprises’ project. It’s not.” It was as close to an apology as Gyro was willing to get.
“I’m paying your consultant’s fee out of my own pocket,” Gyro explained. “And I can’t really afford to pay you for more than two or three weeks of work. I was sort of hoping we’d be able to resolve this expediently.”
“I wish you’d told me that sooner, we could have avoided this entire misunderstanding,” Dr. Bara said, “I would never have charged that much per day if I’d known! A big company like McDuck Enterprises can afford to pay people what they’re worth, but it’s different if it’s coming from a private individual. Moving forward I won’t charge anything if you’d like me to continue working with Boyd.”
“Why?” Gyro asked, a little bewildered that the old man hadn’t already left thanks to Gyro’s abrasive personality. He could understand someone putting up with that if they were getting paid to do it, but for free?
“Because I want to help Boyd,” Dr. Bara said with such tooth-ache inducing earnestness Gyro was forced to assume he was being sincere. “And his specific situation interests me.”
That rationale made more sense to Gyro. Intellectual curiosity motivated much of his own behavior, and he could imagine it being the same for other scientists.
“Fine,” Gyro said. “Anyway… Do you really think it’s going to take years to make 2BO properly functional again? You weren’t inflating your estimate?”
“Dr. Gearloose, I’d never do something like that,” Dr. Bara said with a hint of indignation. “I was being entirely frank with you. These problems might never be resolved at all. I think we can hope to see improvement, perhaps even a marked one, but the glitches will never go away entirely.”
This was not the answer Gyro wanted to hear. While it was good to know that Dr. Bara thought 2BO might improve, the prospect of having to deal with the android glitching for the rest of his life was deeply disappointing. Gyro did not like accepting failure, especially not failure of this magnitude.
“Maybe it would be for the best if we just reset 2BO, wiped its memory, and let it start over,” Gyro said. “That would have the added benefit of erasing the mistakes I made by adding that insipid ‘real boy’ program. 2BO could finally reach its full--”
“No! That’s a terrible idea!” Dr. Bara cried.
Normally Dr. Bara seemed quite timid and non-confrontational, so the sudden change was shocking to Gyro, especially when the rodent got into his personal space and started crowding him.
“You might be able to remove the glitches if you did a total wipe and replaced all of his chemical memory fluid, but doing that would destroy the person he is right now, forever! You’d kill Boyd!” Dr. Bara said.
“You can’t kill something that isn’t alive, Dr. Bara!” Gyro snapped. “2BO is a machine, 2BO isn’t alive, 2BO isn’t a person! It’s a clever machine that has been programmed to act like a human child, but that’s all it is: programming!”
“Are we all not just programming? Ours is accidental, formed by all the things we experience, created by the chaos that is organic life. Theirs is planned, orderly, but also grown through organic systems like encoding DNA and crystal nucleation and aggregation,” Dr. Bara said, staring Gyro in the eyes in a way that made him distinctly uncomfortable.
“Flesh or metal, we’re all composed of electricity and chemicals,” Dr. Bara continued. “Are your emotions more valid than Boyd’s just because they’re triggered by hormones? How do you make the distinction? What scientific criteria do you use to determine the distinction? Boyd--”
“It’s name is 2BO, stop calling it Boyd!” Gyro shouted. The words left him in an angry gust that left him feeling hollowed out afterwards. He took a deep breath and a step away from Dr. Bara, uncomfortable with their closeness.
“...As I was saying, 2BO is a machine,” Gyro said. “I helped program it, I know what I built, and I know that it’s only operating within the parameters that I set down. It can’t be alive, it’s just… a very convincing simulation. So convincing that 2BO itself thinks it’s alive. So convincing that you think it’s alive.”
Dr. Bara didn’t look persuaded, and Gyro was frustrated by this sudden display of stubbornness. Why couldn’t the man continue to be easily cowed and deferential like before?
“I’ve been interviewing and testing Boyd all week, and I’m certain that you are wrong. I had my misgivings at first, of course. I wanted to be sure that I wasn’t dealing with a cleverly programmed mimic. I’ll give you a copy of all the data I’ve collected, and you can review it and see if you still believe that Boyd isn’t alive. You may have programmed and built a machine, but he’s been on his own for two decades, learning and growing. You built him to learn, didn’t you? He’s become more than what he started as. I’d bet my whole reputation on that.”
Gyro felt his feathers sticking up along his neck as his anger simmered. He crossed his arms over his chest.
“Fine, fine, I’ll look over your data this weekend, and I’ll talk to 2BO about it and let you know how I want to proceed next week.”
“You shouldn’t mention that you were thinking of erasing his memory,” Dr. Bara said sternly. “Not even in passing. It could do irreparable harm to your relationship.”
Tumblr media
“2BO, we need to talk,” Gyro said, sitting down on the edge of his bed. 2BO looked up from the tablet he was reading and smiled.
“What is it, Dr. Gearloose?” 2BO asked.
“It’s about your glitching and about your treatment with Dr. Bara.”
“I like Dr. Bara,” 2BO said. “He really listens to me when I talk.”
“He’s a competent scientist, I suppose,” Gyro said, even though he wasn’t sure if he really believed that. He didn’t want to say anything negative about Dr. Bara now that 2BO had indicated that it liked the man.
“Yeah! He’s smart, and he’s nice to me, and he knows a lot about computer science--”
He can’t fix you, Gyro thought bitterly. No matter how nice he is, he can’t help you. How was he going to tell 2BO that?
“Sometimes he asks me really interesting questions about things I never thought about before--”
“Yeah?” Gyro said absently.
“And it was really fun when he asked me to do some drawings. He said they were good, even though I’ve never drawn anything--”
“2BO, Dr. Bara told me today that your glitching problem might be unfixable,” Gyro said, cutting the android off sharply. “He thinks we can make it better, but that there’s no way to truly repair the damage.”
“Oh,” 2BO said, enthusiasm vanishing instantly. “So… I’ll always be this way?”
You’ll always be broken, Gyro thought, and wondered if being broken would bother an intelligent machine or if being broken was something that only humans cared about.
“More or less. We do have another option though.”
“What’s that?” 2BO asked.
“We could reset you,” Gyro said. “Erase all of your memory and replace everything that can’t be fully erased. You could start over! You wouldn’t have to worry about glitching anymore or remembering things that… Upset you.”
2BO stared at Gyro and didn’t respond to what he had said at all. Gyro wasn’t even sure if Boyd had heard him.
“Doesn’t that sound like a good idea?” Gyro asked, trying to fill the silence and coax 2BO into responding and agreeing with him. “Wouldn’t that be better than having to worry about getting triggered and hurting someone?”
Boyd didn’t answer him.
“It would be better, right?” Gyro continued. “You could forget all about the things I taught you and the special programming I gave you, you could get rid of any other insidious hidden programs Dr. Akita left behind, you’d be… Safe, and you could move on and--”
“I wouldn’t know the things I know now,” 2BO said suddenly, interrupting Gyro’s rambling attempts to cajole him. “I wouldn’t remember Mr. Fenton, or Mr. Manny, or my friends in the Junior Woodchucks, or Doofus or Mr. and Mrs. Drake...I wouldn’t remember Huey. I’d forget everything about all of them.”
“You could make new memories!” Gyro said, trying to sound enthusiastic. “Would that be so bad? You’ve only known most of those people for a couple of months!”
“I’ve known you longer than that,” 2BO said. “I’d forget you.”
“We can start over too,” Gyro said. “We could become friends again!”
“It wouldn’t be the same,” 2BO said, getting to its feet, retrieving its tablet from the floor, and walking away. “You’re different now.”
“2BO, where are you going?” Gyro demanded, unnerved and unsettled by the shift from 2BO’s usual childish demeanor to something that seemed flat and emotionless in comparison.
“To my closet,” 2BO replied. “Goodnight, Dr. Gearloose.”
“Uh...Goodnight,” Gyro said, suddenly unsure if he’d be able to sleep at all now.

Spoilers/Reactions for 'Let's Get Dangerous'...

I have so many thoughts and feelings, but these are the main ones that bubble up, in no particular order:
The director of FOWL doesn't think they're the villains, which is a super interesting take. When he got mad and started naming all the shit that was caused by the McDuck adventures, regardless of the fact that they also stopped said shit...he actually wasn't wrong. And that's just really interesting.
Launchpad splitting his days and nights between Duckburg and St. Canard has been a fanfic trope since FOREVER and I'm totally here for it being canon.
Bulba already got his face fucked up, so they're probably laying the groundwork for Steerminator.
I was really surprised that they didn't pull in Negaduck yet, but he's a real dude who we last saw in Duckburg, so he would have needed a good reason to be in St. Canard. But still.
DRAKE PRACTICALLY BEING BFFS WITH FENTON BUT HATING GIZMODUCK IS BRILLIANT MAGNIFICENT GENIUS AND I AM HERE FOR IT. THIS MIGHT BE MY MOST FAVORITE THING THAT HAPPENED BUT I'M NOT SURE YET. My boys. 😭
LAUNCHPAD AND GOSALYN DISGUISED AS THE C-LIST DARKWING VILLAINS. *chef's kiss*
"What does 'quackarooni' even mean?!"
Got one "keen gear" out of Gosalyn. Bless.
Gosalyn started humming 'Little Girl Blue' and I almost had a moment, but she stopped before I could shed a single tear. Launchpad, however, shed several tears. And in that moment, I have never felt closer to Launchpad.
Gosalyn bonding with Dewey over having a missing family member that you'd do anything to find. My poor heart almost couldn't take it.
They laid the groundwork for Quiverwing Quack. They weren't even subtle about it. And I LOVE IT.
"Gizmoduck saved St. Canard!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm so relieved that the top floor of a tall building exploded. I would have been disappointed, otherwise. Was it Canard Tower? No idea, I don't think they called it by name. But probably.
Quackerjack sounded correct, but I'm too lazy to Google if it was the same actor. Sounded like it, though. No one else was, as far as I could tell. Especially Liquidator, he didn't sound right at all. I don't think Bushroot spoke, but they actually made him the creepiest looking of the four! I actually watched Twin Beaks recently, and the color pallette they used for Bushroot was really similar to when he was "dead" in Twin Beaks. I also love how Launchpad and Drake were both like "Technically he isn't a villain." Nerds. (As I sit upon my throne as Queen Nerd.)
I'm pleased to finally know Grandpa Waddlemeyer's first name after almost 30 years. It's Thaddeus.
If I had to have a beef, any beef at all, it would be that the relationship between Gosalyn and Drake is different. Yes, they're found family. Yes, he called her 'young lady' and tried to lay down rules and even kinda grounded her. But with her grandpa lost but presumably still alive...that changes things. I get that he asked her to be his crime fighting partner to keep her close and give her a place to stay, but also because she can hold her own. It's also very Batman-esque. Bruce only ever officially adopted Tim, if memory serves. So that all tracks. But damn...it's gonna take me a hot minute to get used to the idea that he's not her dad. That she has blood-related family still out there.
You'd think I'd be happy for the kid that her beloved grandpa isn't dead. And I am, I just have mixed feelings I need to work through.
After Dewey found his brothers and it became just Darkwing, Launchpad, and Gosalyn in Darkwing Tower...yeah, that gave me some feelings. And then it was them against the Fearsome Four at the end. At the time, I remarked that it would be cool for Gizmoduck to show up because they had LITERALLY just referenced 'Just Us Justice Ducks,' but in retrospect I understand why it had to be the three of them. They're the team. It was so meta, though.
Darkwing's super computer is named Wanda, so I'm wondering if that's a reference to Wanda and Vision, since in the MCU Vision was basically created from Tony's super computer. But I could be reading too much into it.
Scrooge totally ate interdimensional haggis.
Okay, that's all I got. That was much longer than I'd anticipated. I'll watch it again tomorrow when I'm not about to pass out from my meds, and I'll be able to pause it and soak in every detail.

Negaduck Headcanons! (Pt.1)
Tumblr media
This is probably the most ambitious that I will get with exploring a character like this. Not only because I really like Negaduck (More than I talk about him. I generally do this with a lot of characters because you guys got your thing, and I don’t want to damage that character for you because of my portrayal or showing you all with my love for them. Yeah, I hold my feelings back, but I have good reason for that.), but because with all of the weird fluidity his story and character has backing it up.
This isn’t going to be like the definitive version of him, I’m not sure if there will ever be one, but this is just how I see him and want to explore some of the less thought about concepts with him. There’s been stuff about him doing things because of NegaGosalyn or NegaMorgana, but this one’s going to be different. Consider this just a rework to make him more... realistic? (Sounds like a terrible idea since he doesn’t seem to work well with that, but just give me a moment.) At this point, I just want to share or project some things that could work once given good thought and consistency to his background.
I might have to split this into parts like the others since this one’s gonna be preeety long.
The best place to start off is with the concept of the Negaverse in general, which is supposedly everything nearly turned upside down compared to the common universe (I guess Primeverse but it’s hard to say honestly?) we see, the Disney Afternoon universe. Given that, heroes are villains, villains are heroes, ordinary people are grunts or the street trash would actually be good people, or dead, that too. It’s a place where evil or bad prevails over good, and while the good does stay strong, so does the evil that maintains the universe. Maybe it’s a boring concept, but to me at least (Though that doesn’t instantly make it good because I like it.), it allows for more interesting debates on morality, what doing the right thing is, and how should consequences work. It’s a glimpse into a world dominated by bad and the good thing there is to be bad, do bad, instead of being good and to do good like it is over in the regular DA (Disney Afternoon) universe. I wanted to touch upon this with Nega Fenton and eventually other counterparts of the muses I have, but since this whole guy is that concept personified, might as well do it with the one that started the whole mess.
Granted, Negaduck’s first appearance in the show is Just Us Justice Ducks, it kind of just skimmed over who he was an just got to the point of him being a villain, something that can really confuse others as most villains usually have an origin story to them or are already pre-established in the world before the hero does. It does give some mystery as to who he was, but since his origin of becoming Negaduck, of even finding the cake that had a dimensional rift inside of it and allowing for him to traverse from dimension to dimension. However, since there never was an episode to explore that and the comics were close to getting to his origin, it seems like he does have some potential to explore several avenues depending on circumstances.
It could be like a situation where he lost NegaGosalyn (And while that seems more likely for Darkwarrior Duck to happen and we see she’s alive in Life, The Negaverse, and Everything, you can chalk it up to this being the mallard that was in the Negaverse, not the common verse, he could turn this way, so that’s an option.), or where he loses NegaMorgana like it was going to be seen before the comic got cut (Similar circumstance to NegaGosalyn, but it also wouldn’t feel right given that he doesn’t seem to have an attachment to common universe’s Morgana, while Darkwing felt empathy to NegaGosalyn. Sure, you can say that when Negaduck was trying to get Gosalyn to be his little partner during the latest comic run of Darkwing Duck, the Jailbreak one [Orange is the New Purple?], but that could have been some remnant of Paddywhack, you know, that interdimensional demon that did show interest in her in the show?)
Anyway, it just doesn’t seem likely for him to lash out at everyone when NegaMorgana dies or disappears, and the same for Gosalyn since in the show he knows she’s alive, and just doesn’t seem to bother with her much anymore. She’s like a gem that’s lost it’s luster, a used up toy, something that he barely comes back to anymore. And if it’s because he lost her due to a custody battle, it wouldn’t make sense since the Friendly Four explain it upfront that he is Gosalyn’s carefaker, her parental figure, her father. Not only that, but he had to have been doing this this for a while since Darkwing Duck was Darkwing for some time before he met Gosalyn. Of course, he was a minor vigilante, but after meeting Gosalyn, Launchpad, Taurus Bulba and his henchmen, he did get more recognition from there on. Given the idea of somewhat polar opposite universes, it would mean that Negaduck was Negaduck before meeting NegaLaunchpad and NegaGosalyn and ultimately his first encounter with NegaTaurus Bulba.
Another point to address is Negaduck’s real name. You can think of his name as just Negaduck or Jim Starling, Jim Sterling, but for me and this rp blog, the OG Negaduck is Drake Mallard. For everyone else in the Negaverse to go by the same name and respond to that name like their common universe counterpart, and for Negaduck to be the exception? Doesn’t really make sense, and given how he is an evil Darkwing Duck, it only makes sense for him to be Drake Mallard. There have been other series and franchises to do this sort of thing where the character would actually be different like Owlman to Batman from DC Comics. Owlman from Earth 3 isn’t Bruce Wayne, and some characters like Superwoman of Earth 3 is actually Lois Lane. It works there but that’s because it fits that franchise. To fit Disney’s, Negaduck would most likely be Drake Mallard.
Given that, it is safe to say that his life obviously is not like Darkwing Duck Drake’s as his whole universe is built around the concept of being bad is actually good. So his experiences with his childhood of him being bullied, clowned on, getting wrecked in high school for the first half of it were out of him just being overall bad at being bad. He did some nice things here and there, got punished or bullied for it, and still somewhat had want to do it again. Though over time, and especially around his junior year of high school, the general consensus or the norm of being bad finally clicked. He’d done it before several times, yes. It was what he was being taught at school, besides other useful things that would be needed later on in life. Pretty much, he snapped after being ridiculed for his soft personality, and out of defiance, was willing to kill everyone there. He didn’t get to take out everyone, but he did for the first time fully embrace how good it was to be terrible, to kill, the satisfaction of getting what he wanted or most of it. That day, he was forever changed, and ready to create some mass carnage and despair for his own personal enjoyment.
Knowing that his little prototype outfit for the event where he was ridiculed from wasn’t exactly going to make him look menacing, he sketched up some drafts as to what he would really want for himself to be seen as. Some had overly large fedoras, others had torn clothing, and some had on so much black, belts, and zippers that it just seemed too silly. Eventually, he would come out with his well known attire, and also acquired some orange-scarlet contact lenses to complete his change from Drake Mallard, the one cerulean-eyed wimp that couldn’t do much and was seen as a nobody by society. Instead, he was going to be remembered, he was going to feared, and he was going to be the one thing people worry about most. After all, being remembered was the only thing of value in life, and those that were remembered were the nasty, vile, ruthless, terrible, and just plain malevolent people. They were great because they brought forth a force of fear and anxiety with them, and he was going to be the next one.
After that, Negaduck would out in the streets of St. Canard, terrorizing the people, stealing money and valuables away from banks, stores, and factories, all of the while trying not to get on the radar of some of the superheroes that would clearly want to stop a low level villain like him. After all, he had no powers, was considered barely above a common grunt, but that was to give them a false sense of security. Whenever he wasn’t constantly planning his heists, having “fun” with the civilians, or just doing evil, despicable stuff just for the fun of it, the thrill it gave him, he was furthering him study of different martial arts, techniques, and overall strategies. Sure, the opponents he managed to rack in against their own free will weren’t nothing much but living body bags for him to test out his moves on and not much else, but whatever he could memorize, the real test would come when he was out in the field. With that, he gained some more firepower and artillery so he could slowly increase his status to the well known criminal overworld.
It wasn’t too long that his face became somewhat well know around St. Canard, and by this point, he was bathing in that recognition, that glory, of being noticed as a menace to society. Of course, he’d have to scram whenever some of the hero chumps like Megawatt (Mega Megavolt) and Harlequin ( Nega Quackerjack), but he was doing better, getting better at being such a blight on the planet. Though his feats before meeting a certain girl and guy on a fated day were small, they were elevated to new heights afterwards. On another casual routine of giving the police a hard time, he saw some goons trying to take some sweet looking young duckling. She just looked so perfect in the sense of the ways on how he could ruin her day, make her cry, the works, and with that in mind, he went and fetched her from those men, but not before dusting off his knuckles on them. Yet he could feel something unusual about this girl as she seemed to appreciate him “saving” her from the strangers. Whatever they planned to do with her wasn’t going ot be nearly as bad as what he had, but she seemed to be somewhat thrilled at how cool and badass he was taking those guys out. It was... kind of charming to see someone actually compliment him out of genuine interest instead of fear.
While driving the young girl back to his home on his customized motorcycle, he wondered if he should indulge himself by keeping this little one around, to show them the ropes, and eventually see them become about as bad as he was? No one was going to be worse than him, but he was fine with them being second place onward. He was only worthy of number one. But as he continued to think about it, it started to seem like he was getting soft. Some of those small traces of Drake Mallard were trying to crawl their way out of what he was, and he couldn’t let that happen. He was no longer that person and definitely didn’t want to be associated with that name. It was by now the girl had asked him his name, and he responded with only, “Negaduck.”. After all, she didn’t need to know much else about him, and certainly nothing of his past life. Once arriving at his home, he let her off of his vehicle and they entered the house and took a break from all of the action that waited outside. Negaduck then decided to ask this girl for her name in return, and learning that it was Gosalyn, he kept that in mind so he could call her by that name.
For a while they talked about different subjects, like what the other was going to do, and for Negaduck his case was simple, just continue destroying and tearing stuff up, while Gosalyn, she seemed to not really have a set goal in life or after their meeting. This came as a good opportunity for him to propose making her his protege so she could actually get on by in the world, though she’d probably have to ditch the cutesy looking garments she had on. He was astounded to see how quickly she accepted, though it seemed to have been influenced by her not having any parents or adult figures to take care of her. It did tick him off with the potential idea that she might be just putting up with what she could get at the moment, but given how her innocence seemed, it could be that she was just relieved to have someone to take care of her. He’d file in some adoption papers in the morning, but he’d have to know what orphanage she was from. With some more talk to continue on that note, he got the answer he was looking for, and a little more, some information about someone trying to take her, but for what reason? She thought the guys that he knocked out earlier had something to do with this person, and it seemed like a time slot just opened up on his schedule to go ruin this person’s day, or perhaps their life.
Now that he had some time to relax and get a better understanding of what happened to Gosalyn, Negaduck took her along with him since she would know who he was talking about. Zooming through the streets and past the other vehicles that were in the way, the villain was still assessing himself. Why was he doing all of this besides pleasure? It’s not like the guy Gosalyn knew was going to get him any more famous, but he was wrong, as there were some of the same guys he let live and more on motorcycles with guns, ready to fire and probably willing to kill too. Now this was some action he’d been waiting for, the cops wouldn’t give him this type of attention. Drifting a bit and holding his fedora with one hand to make sure it wouldn’t blow off of his head, Drake grinned out of excitement as he continued to drive, but now he could get some better information out of these goons. Pulling off some close quarters saves and near fatal stunts, the two were able to make it out of the chase with one or two fellas still in pursuit. That was good. It meant his competition would be rough.

He falls quiet, a thoughtful look crossing his face.
So Gabby hadn't been transported to another dimension? She'd been brought here.. So it didn't just have access to other dimensions... It also had access to time.
Something lit up in his eyes, some sort of greed had set in. Did McDuck know what he was sitting on? Did Fenton? Drake started thinking of all the possibilities... All the things he could do with a machine like that...
But his thoughts are interrupted and he looks back at Gabby.
What did they do now? He wasn't sure.
When she asks him what happened... He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.
"You disappeared. We spent weeks looking for you before Fenton said that the Ramrod was still unstable to use for long term use... I thought I'd never see you again...
I was getting hurt too much and Gos started coming with me regularly on patrols. More like snuck on them... I couldn't keep her at the house. I lost control of the situation...
One day... " his voice cuts out and he has to take another breath. "one day a patrol went bad...Gos got really hurt..." his voice dies down and he opens his eyes, trying not to cry as the memory of it all suddenly creeps back into his head.
He can't continue.
A hard swallow.
"I promised myself no one would feel the pain I felt... No matter the cost.
Fowl came back... Led by Steelbeak. He got a few good ones in. I lost sight in one eye... He was too dangerous to just keep in prison. So I took care of him." he says darkly.
"Launchpad left shortly after that. Said something about how he didn't like who I was becoming. I cut contact with Gizmoduck when he tried to step in. Made sure he knew what would happen if he stepped foot into Saint Canard again.
I gained control over the city. And crime is at an all time low. "

Drake’s hands unclench at the memory. She was right…
It was such a stupid fight… It had been so long, and when Gabby had first disappeared Drake had constantly thought about that fight. He had regretted every word and wished it had never happened. That he and Gabby didn’t have a single bad moment between them.
He finds himself reaching up, taking off the hat and mask he wore so he could look at her without W.A.N.D.A translating.
It was definitely Drake. Older now. The years hadn’t been too kind. Once pretty Hollywood face, with smile lines around the eyes had turned into one with a deep scowl. Worry lines around his face. One eye had been marred, now blind, with an unseeing murky white. The other as sharp as ever, although it was sunken in, as though he didn’t sleep.
He had a few scars over his face from the years. His beak had taken the brunt of them.
He stares at her for a moment. Unsure of what to say.
Looks like Gabby
Sounds like Gabby
“… Is it really you?”
If she’s put off by how his face has been scarred, she doesn’t show it. She swallows slightly, though. Lashes bat once to show she’s calmed a TAD. But that doesn’t mean she’s off guard. Drake has changed so much, he’s clearly unstable and unpredictable even in this rigid state.
“Yes…it is me. I told you…I do not know what happened. I just know there was a flash of light, and then a blink, and then I was here. I was hoping….” She lowers her blade a little, “…To find help…someone to explain what happened. But I suppose I see for myself, hm?”
She sighs, exhausted. Crestfallen. She has nothing constructive to say, just worry and sadness at what is standing in front of her right now.
“Drake…what….what do we do now? What…” She looks around at the prison-state of St. Canard, sure it’s clean and technology is everywhere, but…at what cost? “What happened to you?”
