So interesting how “may the starbird come for you” is one of courage and a curse like 😭 how Sabine froze at the reminder of it and how she always sought her design to be one of courage 😭 how she feels that conflict in her heart for a moment please!
Just a beautiful oneshot! I loved it 🥹💜🙌🏼 also Ahsoka reaching out to Sabine and listening to her griefs yes! Sabine learning to open up as much as she is willing to be able to grow, incredible, love bearing witness to it!! 🫂💜
Story Summary: Takes place post-Ahsoka S1. Stranded on Peridea, Sabine, Ahsoka, and Huyang pass the time listening to tales of Ezra from the Noti, one of which reveals the origin of their mysterious starbird medallions.
Happy Birthday to the one and only @alphaofdarkness! Hope it was a good one this year and thank you for being such a lovely friend and super talented artist for our fandom.
It had been another long day of travel for the Noti convoy and their new protectors. In the week since Thrawn, his Imperial Remnant, and a stowaway Ezra had made the escape back to their home galaxy, things had since settled down back into a mundane routine.
As evening fell, the Noti prepared a feast to celebrate another safe journey. In middle of camp, a massive cauldron hovered over a fire, boiling with some delicious smelling stew. Ahsoka took a sniff, her stomach rumbling at the aromas drifting in her direction on the gentle night breeze. Folding her cloak over her body more snugly, she took mental stock of their journey so far.
The nomadic bandit clans that roamed the wastelands of Peridea were dangerous, despite their primitive weaponry. The Noti had no real way of defending themselves, outside of the rock-like shells that were an extension of their physicality. But Ezra's presence had clearly left a mark; the turtle people were resilient and clever, relying on their wits and ingenious solutions to avoid a head-on confrontation with their ancient enemy.
It probably also helped that they now had two Jedi to protect them, instead of one. Although two was admittedly a stretch since Sabine was in training. She had pulled off some amazing feats of the Force since her reunion with Ezra, but her ability to wield it fully was still erratic.
Ahsoka wasn't worried, however. They had nothing but time now and Sabine was a fast learner . . . once she actually started listening, that is.
Sitting on wooden stump that serviced comfortably as a seat, the smell of tonight's dinner wafted through the air; a thick, creamy seafood broth that was a Noti specialty, according to Huyang. The droid had been chatting constantly with the turtle folk in attempt to learn their native tongue to better learn about their culture and facilitate easier lines of communication in case of emergency. Ahsoka had been trying to learn the language herself but could still only understand it roughly and was still unable to speak it.
Huyang stood near the fire, observing the Noti cooking. His vocabulator emitted a strange series of chirps and clicking sounds to which the turtle people responded in kind. When they finished, Huyang's mechanical head turned to find Ahsoka. She waved at him from her spot on the rock, a few meters away.
He gave a thumbs up. She blinked at him and then - hesitantly - gave one in return.
Familiar footsteps came up behind her. "Seems like we'll actually be able to taste tonight's supper then," remarked Sabine.
Ahsoka smiled, turning to find her padawan squatting down to take in the scenery before her. Every night, the two of them would take turns patrolling the perimeter, ready to send an alarm in case of a late-night bandit attack. So far, the bandits didn't seem interested in the Noti throughout this latest journey.
In fact, they seemed eerily quiet. The Noti elders had said that it was unusual - but not uncommon - for the bandits to not be seen for quite some time. There was no centralized leadership among the bandit clans; they were all separate and distinct, sometimes warring amongst themselves.
Ahsoka hoped that was the case. She knew that her and Sabine were not the only ones on the planet: Baylan Skoll, a fallen Jedi, and his apprentice, Shin Hati were also here. Whether they were together or plotting separately, only one thing was sure: neither of them were up to anything good.
But that was a problem for another day. For tonight, she would focus on the present and enjoy a relaxing evening after a productive day with some good food.
"You think that's what Huyang's thumbs up was about?" Ahsoka asked.
Sabine shrugged. The Jedi noticed the glassy, vacant look in the young Mandalorian's eyes. Her body was physically present, but Ahsoka knew that Sabine's mind - and heart - were elsewhere.
With Ezra.
Despite her reassurances that Ezra had made it home, she knew the young woman remained worried about him. Her feelings for him still burned bright after their long-awaited reunion. If anything, Sabine's feeling had only intensified since then.
Ahsoka prodded her gently. "All quiet out there?"
"Nothing but the wind," Sabine replied. "Maybe some tumbleweeds."
"Good to know."
A small Noti came up beside them then, tugging at Sabine's sleeve. She blinked and focused on the little turtle alien. "Hey, Fred," she said politely. "What have you got there?"
"Fred?" Ahsoka was surprised that Sabine knew the Noti's name. "How did you know his name was Fred?"
Sabine grinned at her. "I called him Fred. Didn't seem to mind. Now it's his name. Simple."
The Jedi snorted. That was her padawan's casual slant on things, alright.
The Noti - Fred - produced from his ratty shirt an unfamiliar object. It was round, in the shape of a medallion, but not too large since it fit in his hand. It was carved from pale wood that was native to the trees that grew on Peridea and painted on it in dark orange hues was a symbol.
"Looks like the New Republic symbol," Ahsoka murmured. She turned to Sabine, about to ask for her guess -
And was hit with a wave of melancholy and regret through the Force. Sabine stared down at the little wooden medallion with sad eyes.
"Sabine?" asked Ahsoka. "What's wrong?"
For a long moment, she thought Sabine hadn't heard her. Then, quietly, she heard an answer, whisper soft: "Ezra made these."
Fred jumped excitedly at the mention of Ezra. "Ezra Bridger!" he squealed, pointing at the medallion and then at one of Sabine's shoulder pauldrons.
"Really? You're sure?"
"She is correct, Lady Tano," came Huyang's voice. He had made his way over to them, joining the discussion. "Master Bridger did indeed craft these medallions for the Noti."
Ahsoka looked at the droid and then back to Sabine. Suddenly Sabine's outburst of feelings made sense.
"It's not the New Republic symbol, is it," she said. "It's something else that looks similar to it."
Sabine sat down on the ground; head bowed in sudden grief. She didn't reply.
"It is Lady Wren's symbol," Huyang answered instead. "Her personal Starbird, if I'm not mistaken."
Sabine remained silent. Ahsoka frowned and asked, "Why did Ezra make these?"
Huyang turned and knelt in front of Fred, relaying the question in the Noti's language. Fred chittered something back, making exaggerated hand movements all the while.
Finally, Huyang finished the translation. "Fred says that the medallions are charms to ward off fear. The starbird symbol on them makes them brave."
That elicited a reaction from Sabine. A choked sound that was half-laughter, half-sob. "Of course he would," Ahsoka heard her mutter.
She poked her padawan. "Care to elaborate?"
Sabine looked up, eyes glistening. "There are no birds on Peridea," she explained, her voice rough with emotion. "He couldn't give them a feather."
Ahsoka glanced at Huyang. The droid merely shrugged.
"I'm not following," Ahsoka said.
Sabine was quiet for a moment, struggling to regain her composure. The Jedi waited patiently, knowing how difficult it was for her padawan. Anything regarding Ezra was always a touchy subject for Sabine.
The young woman took a deep breath and began to speak, her voice soft. "When we were younger - still traveling on the Ghost with everyone, that is - I told Ezra a story about the starbird once."
Fred sat in front of Sabine, stubbly legs crossed, looking enraptured. Ahsoka felt amused. Despite the language barrier, the Noti still seemed interested.
Ahsoka turned to Huyang. "Translate for Fred, if you don't mind?"
"Not at all, Lady Tano."
Sabine blinked. "You want me to tell the story?"
"Well," Ahsoka pointed out gently, "seems like you want to tell it, Sabine."
She cocked her head. "I don't understand."
"That's fine. Just keep telling the story. It sounds lovely."
Sabine sighed. "Another lesson, huh. Fine, have it your way."
Her expression turned thoughtful, and then she began telling the tale.
"A long time ago, the first space travelers learned the secrets of hyperspace. At least they could be free of the confines of their lonely planets and travel to far beyond. They built ships and flew them into the void between planets, in the hopes of seeing what the vast galaxy had to offer. But, very quickly, they became lost. The planets were so far away and there was nothing to mark the path; no guide to point the way forward or back in the endless, deep dark. "
Ahsoka smiled, enjoying the vivid imagery her padawan was invoking. She was a natural storyteller, whether Sabine believed it or not.
Sabine leaned forward; eyes sparkling as she continued the story.
"For you see, there were no stars back then. None existed, as they do on this evening, brightening up the night sky. All those people, lost in the dark, with no way to go home. They were scared. In the void of infinite space, they cried out for anyone - anything - to save them."
A couple more Noti had come over to join them now, forming a small circle around Sabine. Huyang continued to translate, his voice chattering away in the Noti's tongue.
"Then the starbirds came. From where, no one really knows. But they came through the darkness, their feathers shining so brightly. To the weary and scared travelers, they each offered a simple trade:
'Give me some of your fear and, in return, I will give you some of my courage.'
"The travelers agreed, awed by the majestic beauty of the starbirds - but even more awed at their generosity and compassion. And so, the trade was made, over and over again. Because fear is never gone forever, right? Again and again, they fell into fear. Again and again, the starbirds gave them courage. And that courage came in the form of a feather."
Sabine pointed up at the night sky. "Starbird feathers burn forever, did you know? Whenever the travelers became scared, the starbirds left a feather to light their way. And that's how the first stars came into being. Guiding lights to shine their way home."
Ahsoka reached out to Fred and lifted up his medallion. "He had no feathers to give," she said out loud, understanding dawning her on Sabine's earlier statement.
The young woman nodded, smiling. "No birds on Peridea. No feathers to give. So, Ezra did the next best thing; he gave them the image of a starbird."
Huyang interjected with a sudden question. "I had heard of an ancient Mandalorian saying: 'May the Starbird come for you.'"
"Yes," Sabine said. "It originated from that tale. My people used to say it as a form of well-wishes, when undertaking a long journey."
"My understanding, however, is that the phrase was intended as a curse," Huyang said.
Ahsoka watched her padawan's face darken for a moment. "It can be meant as one," Sabine admitted reluctantly. "In some of the other stories about starbirds, they were used as weapons to punish our enemies."
Her eyes flashed fiercely. "But I always held onto the belief that starbirds were creatures of hope. Not vengeance. That's why I chose them as my personal symbol."
Huyang nodded. "I see. I concur with you, Lady Wren. I prefer your version rather than the other ones."
"Ezra made these to give the Noti hope and courage," said Ahsoka. "He was thinking of you when doing so, Sabine."
Sabine looked away suddenly. "He was thinking of a myth. Stupid."
The Jedi raised a surprised eyebrow. "You don't really believe that."
"He should have been thinking of how to survive!" Sabine shouted. Suddenly, the turbulent feelings were back in full force. A dam, somewhere deep inside her padawan, was beginning to burst. "A starbird wouldn't save him. Couldn't save anybody. These little trinkets he made - "
She stopped short of saying whatever came next. Shaking her head roughly, she stood up abruptly and stalked off into the dark.
Ahsoka watched sadly, watching her go. Then, to her surprise, Fred came up to her.
"What is it?" she asked.
He brandished his medallion and then pointed at Sabine, walking off into the distance.
"She looked scared," came Huyang's remark.
Again, Fred pointed at his medallion, then at Sabine.
It clicked for Ahsoka what the Noti was trying to tell her.
She smiled.
_ _ _ _ _
Sabine sat down in the dirt, feeling miserable. All these feelings, with nowhere for them to go . . .
She sensed a presence - no, two - coming up behind her. There was a small rustle and then Fred appeared beside her.
Ahsoka was right behind him. She squatted down next to her.
"Talk to me," her master said gently.
Sabine blew out a breath. "I shouldn't have walked off like that. I'm sorry."
"I understand," Ahsoka said. "And there's nothing to apologize for. You were upset. Walking away is never a bad idea when feeling overwhelmed."
Sabine glanced at her. "Better than shooting or blowing something up, huh."
"Infinitely preferable," Ahsoka replied dryly. "You've made some progress in that regard, thankfully."
Sabine felt a wisp of a smile cross her lips for just a moment, before turning melancholy again. But the tangled ball of emotions in her chest had loosened, just slightly.
"It's about Ezra," she said.
"Oh, is it?" asked Ahsoka. "I couldn't have guessed."
The young woman gave the Jedi a sour look. "Huyang's statement about the ancient saying. It bothered me."
"'May the Starbird come for you,'" Ahsoka repeated. "How did it bother you?"
"I know Ezra was thinking about me when making these," Sabine confessed. "But I'm not a Starbird. I'm not brave like the stories are."
"You're scared," Ahsoka said.
Her padawan stared into the dark, tears glistening in her eyes. "So scared. Like I might be crushed to death from the weight of it."
"What scares you, Sabine?"
"I . . . I just got him back, you know? After all these years. And now he's gone again. And Thrawn's back, too, which is partly my fault." The tears slid silently down her cheeks, glinting like diamonds in the moon light.
"I know you said he'll be alright, that he made it home fine, and my head believes it but my heart - my heart doesn't. The blasted thing doesn't want me to be happy."
Ahsoka sat in silence for a few seconds, her heart aching for Sabine's misery. She had her burden of guilt for her padawan being stuck here on Peridea instead of going home with Ezra.
Finally, she said, "Can I tell you my own story about Ezra?"
Sabine sniffed. "Sure. Why not."
"Hera was teaching you both how to read star charts, right? While on Atollon base."
The young woman turned her head curiously, caught off guard by the sudden change in subject.
"Yeah, she was a real pain about those. Ended up being saving our lives a couple times, though." Sabine snorted. "As usual, Hera was right."
"Always wise to think that about her," Ahsoka acknowledged. "One night, I visited the base after during a recon mission for Commander Sato. I came upon Ezra in the hangar, studying some maps."
Sabine titled her head but said nothing. Ahsoka continued on.
"He and I chatted for a bit, catching up on what he had been up to. I asked him about the maps, trying to quiz him on any constellations or polestars he would use in case he was lost."
"And what did he answer?"
Ahsoka laughed and said, "He admitted that he didn't know any. He also said that he didn't need to know any of this."
Sabine smiled. "Of course he said that. What a goober."
"Ezra Bridger," agreed Fred.
"So, what was he going to do if he got lost, then?" Sabine asked, incredulous. "Spin his lightsaber and then head off in whichever direction it pointed?"
The Jedi gave Sabine a serious look suddenly. "Ezra said that if he ever got lost, he would just go find you. Or that you would find him."
Sabine went still.
As if on cue Fred reached out with his tiny hand, something grasped within it.
It was his starbird medallion. Sabine stared down at it, then at him.
"You may not believe in the myth, Sabine," Ahsoka said softly, "but Ezra did. And it came true. Because you made it so."
Fred nudged the medallion at the young woman. "What's he doing?" she asked.
"Well, you just admitted you are feeling scared," Ahsoka pointed out. "He wants to make a trade, it seems."
Sabine caught on. A small smile appeared. "Some of your courage, for some of my fear," she whispered, understanding the gesture.
"A good trade, I think. I would take up the offer."
Sabine reached out and took the starbird medallion gratefully. "May I?" she asked Fred.
He nodded excitedly. Sabine slipped it on, clasping the symbol tightly in her hand. She looked to Ahsoka.
"He's going to be okay," she said. "That's real."
"It will be," Ahsoka confirmed. "You'll find each other again. You did so before."
Sabine closed her eyes, breathing deep. "Okay. Okay, I can do that. I'll believe it."
She cracked open an eye to look at her master. "Not in the myth, though. I'll believe in him. And in myself."
Ahsoka shrugged. "You two make a good story, I always thought. Someday, younglings might speak of you both as legends someday."
"As role models, you mean? To inspire or to warn?" Sabine asked.
The Jedi grinned at her. "Up to you."
Sabine stood up. "Well, guess we'll have to survive to hear what those younglings think someday."
Her stomach grumbled then, loud as a horn. Ahsoka laughed; Fred clapped for some reason.
The young woman blushed and said, "Guess I should get some chow, then."
"Seems like it," Ahsoka said. "Save me a bowl?"
"Of course," said Sabine. "Oh, and Ahsoka?"
"Yes?"
She turned to bow deeply to her master's surprise. "Thank you."
"Anytime, my padawan."
Sabine flashed her a quick smile and jogged back to the camp for supper.
Ahsoka stood up, intending to follow - but not before whispering to Fred, "Thank you for the help. Your idea did much to give my friend some much needed cheering up."
The Noti patted her on the leg in response and then chittered back to her something in his tongue.
She frowned, concentrating, but understood the gist of what had been said.
Is she worried about Ezra Bridger?
"She is," said Ahsoka. "But she trusts that one day they will be reunited once again."
The Noti tilted his head. She wasn't sure if he understood her, until Fred spoke again.
Ezra Bridger always spoke of the Starbird that would come down from the sky to take him home. Is that where he went? Did the Starbird come for him?
Ahsoka looked to the camp, seeing Sabine standing next to the campfire, in line for the food. She could just make out the starbird medallion on her padawan's chest.
"Yes, Fred," Ahsoka replied. "She did."

A Failed Betrothal (4)
Am I doing this right? I mostly do write this when I am between the state of sleep and awareness. Hope you enjoy this.
[Masterlist]
(Part 1) (Part 3)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PART 4
Marinette came to a dungeon cell with two other prisoners. One of them was awake and he looked vaguely familiar. The other had an ugly red helmet that didn’t help with the headache she had.
“Do you know where we are?” She asked the handsome stranger with beautiful green eyes, her throat a little dry.
Wait. Handsome?
No bad Marinette. Don’t fall for fellow prisoners, no matter how cute he looks. Oh Kwamis, she was already screwed.
He still hadn’t replied. Maybe he didn’t understand French. She tried to ask again in another language before her enhanced hearing picked up the sound of footsteps. She faked unconsciousness. Later, she heard the iron door open. She looked through the tiniest slits of her eyes she could muster while the two held a staring/glaring match. Oh shit, that’s the fame Talia Al Ghul, daughter of Ra’s, head of the League of Shadows, and the boy she was glaring at had some resemblance to her, so he must be her son, Dennis? Daniel? Damon?
"Damian, I hope you know what you should do."
Ohh..Damian. Where had she heard that name before?
"To be forcefully married to that little girl. She is no one special. Why am I getting married to her?"
Ouch, that hurts. Well, Damian, just because I forgot your name does not mean you can call me a little girl. I can also kill you very easily and painfully.
“Well, Jason, you are awake. You can be the best man for the wedding.”
“No. I don’t know what game you are playing but you better release us. B is gonna find us and you will pay. Let the girl go. She is innocent in all of this.” Red Helmet, Jason, is officially not going on her hit list for his atrocious fashion choices. But that red monstrosity still needs to go.
"Ladybug may not seem like it but she possesses great power that my father converted for centuries. Speaking of, she should be awake by now."
Marinette felt her hair being yanked. A little pain was expected but the really sharp claws digging into her scalp was not. Making her cry and tear up.
”I am so sorry, kit.” Plagg whispered in the kwami language, loosening his claws.
"Tch, See, she is more pathetic than I thought. She is not powerful." Damian growled out.
Geez, thanks for the compliment, it’s not like you ever had a tiny cat dig its claws into your scalp out of surprise. (Damian once had a kitten thrown at his head and if he knew about Plagg, he would have been sympathetic.) Marinette started begging for mercy, hoping they would buy the helpless girl out of the suit that is ill-suited for the job she had been chosen for and had no idea on how to escape.
“Like I thought, weak. She is not deserving of the title of my wife.”
Oh kwamis, what did she ever do to have such a picky groom? The more he insults her, the less she wants to be married to him.
"Appearance can be deceiving. Despite her demeanor, she is the current wielder of the Ladybug Miraculous and the Current Guardian. The old Guardian, the old fool had promised her in exchange for his protection."
Great, another reason to stop her mother from killing a senile old man.
"That doesn't mean I want to marry her. She is not worthy of an Al Ghul or a Wayne. Look at her, crying at the slightest feeling of pain."
So that’s where she heard it from. The boy was the son of the daughter of a guy who leads a secret order of assassins and a man that owns a multi-million business. How even did a billionaire meet an assassin, ends up in bed with her and lives? Something to think about for later. She quieted down her sobs, (beat that acting, Rossi) kept her voice low to hatch out a plan with Plagg in the kwami language while the mother-son duo bickered.
“Hey, Plagg before you go, you think I can do that thing, the one which your one of your past holders from Japan can do.”
“You have a lot of potential for destruction but you have not used the ring for a long time yet so I am not sure.”
“I will give it a go anyways. Nothing to lose after all. See you later, Plagg.” Marinette smiled, one that drove fear into the hearts of even the bravest of people. Plagg returned it, already loving the new Guardian before zipping out of the cell to do some scouting. Using the enhanced strength the French superheroine got from prolonged use of the Miraculous, she yanked the chains of the walls and wrapped them around Talia’s neck, cutting off her air supply.
The League of Assassins thought that they could kidnap her and get away with it. But they were no match for the daughter of Sabine Cheng, the deadly Blue Reaper. A high ranking member from the group of assassins and mercenaries called the Guild of Night, who had semi-retired. Kidnapping her was a bad move to make as it meant they had declared war on the Guild, despite the reason behind her abduction having a completely different intention.
She whispered as such to the older woman in her tight grip, making sure the League would know how much they had fucked up. After dropping the limp body, she took a deep breath and tried channeling some of her energy for what she was about to do.
Well, here goes nothing.
She breathed out on the shackles, turning it to rust.
Success!
She introduced herself as Lady and concentrated the energy from before into her hand, forming inky black orbs of destruction in order to free her fellow captives. She felt a little drained from doing magic out of the suit and tried not to show it. Plagg returned, informing her of where the Ra’s and the Pits were. She grinned at the thought of showing old Ra’s who the boss is and made sure he regretted ever messing with her. She explained about Plagg as vaguely as she can, no need to let anyone know about the miraculous than necessary. Sure her plan sounds insane but the boys don’t know who they were with.
She would worry about that curse after she got out of Nanda Parbat. Although she could probably find something in the grimoire to reverse it, she was still an amateur at magic so it was best to have a professional to take care of it. Marinette didn’t want to be with such an asshole, no matter how striking he looks in those regal robes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Picking off the League assassins, one by one was easy especially in her transformed state. She hadn’t appraised her suit properly but from what she had seen, it wasn’t like Chat Noir’s leather get-up. She was armoured in vital areas and her colour scheme was mainly black with green accents. There were vials that were probably poisons and pouches which she decided to look at later. She still had a long braid as a tail from her brief stint as Lady Noire and she wondered why her suit was different. While hiding in a niche she found, she called the bakery via the comm in one of her various pouches.
“Hello?”
“Papa, it’s me, Marinette. Do you know where Maman is?”
“She went out of Paris, talking about how this League must pay. I think she is meeting up with several of her old friends. Are you alright, my little blossom? I know you can take care of yourself but I worry.” The relief in Tom’s voice was palpable. However, she was right and the Guild was going to war against the League. Marinette was adored by nearly everyone in the Guild due to her strangely bubbly and cheery personality in the harsh and brutal lifestyle.
“I am fine, Papa. Did Maman use the Horse to leave? And how are my friends?” She knew they might be in a panic after her disappearance.
“I think she did. I didn’t see Kalki when I went to feed the kwamis. Your friends panicked when they found out you were kidnapped. But they are fine now, mostly worried about you. Took care of some akumas and senti monsters by themselves. I think your fencer friend, Kagami, knows more about the League than she lets on.” Of course, she does. Her mother was a member of the Guild before being blinded due to a mission. Kagami and her actually first met during a reunion party of sorts.
“Thank you, Papa. Love you.”
“Love you too.”
She hung up and dialed the personal phone number her mother uses that only Marinette and her father knows about. She waited for the call to connect, trying to think of ways to stop her mother from storming into the League’s base of operation.
“Maman, it’s me. I know you want to attack the League right this minute. But I have a better plan. Can you get Tikki’s earrings from Alix? We can use them and the ring to destroy the Lazarus Pits. Make them really angry.” She peeked out of the niche she was hiding in. She had been there for a while and needed to move to gain some grounds.
“Where are you? And are you okay?” Panic and worry filled her usually composed mother’s voice.
“I am somewhere in Nanda Parbat and I am fine. I was nearly married off to Talia’s son but I am not now. I think.” Marinette replied. Better to rip that band-aid off before she showed up with her would-have-been-husband. She jumped out of the niche and looked
“Kalki, Full Gallop. Okay, we will talk about the ‘nearly married’ part later. What was this plan to destroy the Lazarus Pits?” Sabine thought she was already used to Marinette’s brand of craziness that was her normal but apparently, not.
“I am currently on my way there. Plagg said we need Tikki to get rid of them. Since the League pissed me off and by extension you and the rest of the Guild, I thought our first move against them is to destroy the Pits and a trail of bodies. By the way, can you get some cheese for Plagg?” Marinette ran through the halls, knocking out some poor sod with a whack on the head.
Silence. She thought Sabine had hung up when-
“Voyage. Alix, where are you? We need Tikki for one of Marinette’s insane plans. And Marinette, stay safe, sweety, I’ll be there in 15 minutes.”
“Bye, Maman. See you there.”
Marinette turned another corner, the last one before the path that leads to the entrance where the Lazarus Pits were. She only managed to find it with Plagg’s voice in her head, whispering directions and Tikki’s luck. Unfortunately, the luck ran out because the entrance had a lot of guards who had spotted her.
Crap.
She hoped her mother would get here soon. Thankfully, being transformed gave her a boost and would help her to hold her ground for a while.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damian and Red Hood followed the trail of unconscious bodies and sounds of fights, trying to find Lady. Damian was impressed at the level of her skills to defeat many of the League’s assassins although he could probably do better. They relied on his memory to find the Lazarus Pits which was their best bet to finding her as she claimed to be able to destroy them. If Lady possessed such powers, they must find out whether she is a threat to the world or not. And also break the infernal curse they have.
Red Hood was silent mostly. He made a few jabs about how kick ass his ‘bride’ was and how the current Robin should not let her get away. Damian tried really hard not to just maim his adopted brother and also ignore that little fluttering in his chest that happened every time they saw an unconscious assassin left behind by Lady. The sounds of fighting got louder as they got nearer to the entrance. They turned the final corner to see Lady fighting against the guards who outnumbered her. But she seemed to be doing fine against them. Mostly.
One had slipped through her defenses and nearly stabbed her in the back if it weren’t for Damian grabbing one of Red Hood’s guns and shooting a rubber bullet to the neck. He jumped into the fight, grabbing the fallen assassin’s sword and taking out the knife he got from his mother. Jason joined in too, not going to let the two teens have all the fun.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Thanks for the save, Al Ghul but I don’t know why you bothered when me being dead would solve your curse problem.” Lady said as the guards laid around them and they tried to catch their breath.
“It’s Wayne. I go by Wayne these days. Being an Al Ghul is not something I learned to be proud of. And as much as I don’t want this curse, your death is not worth that price.” he replied, “Although, I have to wonder why you would choose to die rather than live.”
She chuckled, “Okay, Wayne, to answer your question. Petty teenage drama makes death much more preferable. On top of that, I have responsibilities that I was practically forced into for doing one little act of kindness.” Her tone was joking but there was a touch of bitterness in it. It made Damian want to find out what caused it. Red Hood looked at her in concern. Lady went down the stairs, ignoring their reactions to her words. They followed her, not wanting to lose sight of her again.
The Lazarus Pits emitted a green glow that lit up the cave and cast strange shadows on the walls. At the edge of the glowing toxic green waters was a woman in dark blue clothing and strangely enough wearing sunglasses. Strapped to her sides were two Dao, ancient Chinese swords. She wore a vindictive expression on her face as she stood staring at the green lake, likely to kill anyone who gets in her way. Damian didn’t recognize the woman as part of the League but taking no chances, he got into a fighting stance and Hood did the same. Lady calmly approached the woman. He reached out to grab her to stop her suicidal nature when she shocked him by speaking to the blue-clad assassin in French,
“Hey, Maman, sorry I am late. I had a little trouble with the guards upstairs. You have Tikki?”
Lady’s mother rushed to hug her, “灵儿 (líng er), I am just glad you are alright. I knew you could handle yourself.”
How the hell did Lady’s mother get to the Lazarus Pits faster than them and snuck past several vigilant guards? Before Damian could question further, a red blur appeared and went to Lady’s face, hugging her cheek. It appeared to be the same size as Plagg but was red, looked like a bug and had a black dot on its forehead.
“Oh, Marinette, you are alright. I was so worried when your mother showed up, saying you were kidnapped and needed my earrings to escape.” Unlike Plagg’s nasally voice, her voice was sweet and shrill.
So, my bride’s name is Marinette. Such a unique name for an intriguing girl.
Wait what?
Wayne, stop thinking such ridiculous notions. That is probably the curse working. Resist against it. He will not be ensnared in the traps of such magic. He hoped that the curse will be reversed before he turns and act like those fools in Grayson’s idiotic shows or Todd’s ‘secret’ romance novels.
“I am fine now. See,” reassured Lady, “We actually need you and Plagg to reverse the Lazarus Pits to what it was before someone made the wish that resulted in them in the first place. Oh, I almost forgot. Plagg, claws in.”
Green light flashed, leaving Lady in her wedding robes (which actually flatter her body. Shit. Think of something else. Drake with a smug superior smile that needs to be wiped off his face. Grayson and his plans for ‘family bonding’) and Plagg to reappear.
“Cheese.” whined the cat-like kwami(?) to which the older woman held out a brown bag that smelled and made Plagg perk up in delight. He proceeded to open the bag, taking out a slice of stinky cheese, muttering about the greatness of camembert.
Todd cleared his throat and asked in English, “Umm...Pixie as much as your reunion is touching. Who’s the new lady?”
“Oh Right, sorry. Well, Red Hood, this is my mother, the Blue Reaper of the Guild of Night. Maman, this is Red Hood and the one next to him is my husband-to-be and Talia’s Spawn, Damian Wayne.”
Lady introduced them, also in English. Damian stilled in fear, recognizing the name. The Blue Reaper nearly became his mother-in-law. She was famous for her efficiency and ruthlessness. And gained her nickname from the blue clothing she often wore as she killed her targets. His eyes also widened at how his grandfather had gone a little too far now by kidnapping the Reaper’s daughter. There were other organizations that could possibly take down the League if it weren’t for the somewhat truce between Ra’s and the other leaders. The Guild was one of them and having the Lazarus Pits to revive their soldiers made the League a little more powerful. But if what the mother-daughter duo were planning succeeded, then the League was going to have one of its most deadly wars in its history and would probably never recover from.
“Tikki, Plagg, you guys ready?” asked Lady.
“Yes, Guardian.” They both replied and emitted a blinding red and green light which Damian shielded his eyes from. When it died down, the Lazarus Pits no longer glowed a toxic green and looked… like normal hot spring water.
“Oh. I wished I could see Ra’s face when he finds out.” Lady laughed. Plagg and Todd joined in.
“Pixie, I am beginning to like you.”
“Voyage. That being said, it’s time to go home, Marinette. Your father must be worried sick about us by now. I hope you boys can find your own way back.” A portal opened up, showing a cozy living room. Damian grabbed Lady’s wrist as she moved towards it.
“Wait, let us come with you. We need to contact someone to get rid of the curse on both of us. And we can also call our father to send us tickets for a ride home wherever you live.”
“Curse? Marinette, you never mentioned a curse in your call.” Blue Reaper said, raising her eyebrow.
“I will explain later. They can come with us and I am pretty sure Ra’s knows that we have escaped by now.” Lady grabbed the two brothers and dragged them through the portal.
She then threw herself onto the couch after releasing her hold on them and the two pocket gods went to comfort her after her ordeal. The Blue Reaper stood where the other portal was and fed a floating tiny gray horse, that must be the same species as Tikki or Plagg, some sugarcubes.
“You boys must be tired but the showers are upstairs and we might have some clothes your size. Dinner will be ready in an hour. You can stay the night if you want. Welcome to Paris.”

Pairing: Kanan Jarrus/Hera Syndulla
Word count: no idea
A/N: This is my first fanfiction that I’m posting out in the world! This takes place an hour or two after the end of Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Episode 7: Wings of the Master. I found a fanart when surfing the internet for Kanera content (as one does) a few months ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since! I don’t know whose work the art is but I’ll paste it on here! If anyone knows who it’s by, please let me know :) the art isn’t mine, but all of the writing is! Obviously, Kanan isn’t blind yet in this fic like he is in the fanart. I hope anyone who reads this likes it!! I’m hoping to post more fanfiction in the future—I have three others in the works already! I’m open to any and all feedback!
Hera rubs her temple as she steps out of the promotion briefing. Her head buzzes with new intel, and plans zip through her mind like starships. She is honored and ecstatic about her promotion to Phoenix Leader. At the same time, though, she can already feel the new responsibility settling onto her shoulders, all of the lives that will soon be placed under her supervision weighing on her. Hera can and will take on all of the privileges and authority her new position grants her, and she fully intends to own it, too. Still, her heart is heavy.
Truthfully, she’s still struggling with the losses they suffered on the first attempt to deliver supplies to Ibaar. Hera had been so determined to complete that mission, to find the right ship to make it possible, that the grief and sensation of failure hadn’t caught up with her. She had made sure of that. There wasn’t time to be crippled by guilt and loss when there was a mission to complete. Now that the mission was over, however, she can feel the effects of the losses setting in.
Thoughts swirl through her mind as she continues to head down the hallway towards the bay where the Ghost is docked.
If I had just let us turn back—if I hadn’t told everyone to keep going—maybe Phoenix Leader and the people on the transport would have survived.
She’d made the wrong call. Hera can still hear the panic-filled voice crying out, “Captain Syndulla!” as the transport—and the people inside—were blasted into a thousand pieces. She’d let her determination blind her, and lives had been lost because of it.
Guilt pours into her, paralyzing her. She stops walking in the middle of the empty hallway and steps into a nearby alcove to process it all. If I make a mistake like that again, the consequences will be worse now that I have more responsibility. What if I let everyone down?
Her churning vortex of thoughts and feelings is interrupted by a pair of strong, green-clad arms embracing her from behind, and a deep, warm voice comes from above her. “How’s it going, Captain?”
Pleasure surges through her lekku. His timing is perfect.
The pleasant surprise washes all of the guilt, fear, and sadness away, at least for now. Hera lets out a little “hey” of protest as Kanan Jarrus pulls her nearly off her feet, but an irrepressible smile spreads over her face. She closes her eyes and turns her face towards his, relishing the warmth emanating from him and the way his presence soothes her. Hera places her hands on the arms that envelop her, returning the embrace through a gentle squeeze.
“Better now, love,” she tells him. He releases her slightly so that her feet are fully on the ground and places his chin on her shoulder, still holding her close.
“And you usually hate PDAs.”
“If I’m not mistaken, there’s no one in this hallway.”
“What would you have done if there were?”
Hera is silent for a moment, eyes still closed. “Nothing differently.”
She can feel him grin. “Great,” he replies. “Because there’s someone walking by now.”
Hera’s eyes fly open and search the hallway—which is still empty. She elbows him. “Kanan!”
A deep laugh vibrates out of his chest. She rolls her eyes, but allows herself to settle back into his embrace.
“Really, though,” Kanan says gently, all traces of mirth disappearing. The care in his voice sends another ripple of affection through her lekku. “How are you? I could tell you needed this.”
“And you were right,” Hera admits as he guides them down onto the alcove’s bench, arms still entwined around her. Normally, she’d break away now to explain what she was feeling, the thought of fellow rebels walking by and being made uncomfortable by their display of affection present in her mind. This time, however, she isn’t ready to move away from him. Besides, this isn’t a heavily trafficked hallway anyway. She does move to the side rather than sitting on his lap, though, her shoulder overlapping his. “It’s those people we lost the first time we went to Ibaar to deliver the supplies,” she begins, her voice heavy with returning guilt. “They died because of me.”
Kanan lifts his head from her shoulder, his aquamarine eyes staring seriously into hers. “Hera, no.”
“They told me they were taking heavy fire,” she continues, her voice growing more and more agitated. “They lost their forward deflectors, and I still told them to keep going. I should’ve told them to turn back.” A sound of frustration escapes her throat. “Why am I so stubborn? Why are they putting more people under my leadership after my decision led to several deaths?”
“Hera,” Kanan’s voice cuts through her hysteria, rich and deep and sure. “Everyone here knows that any mission could be their last.”
“I know that,” she responds, voice still thrumming with anguish. “But that doesn’t mean lives should be thrown away just because of one person’s inability to retreat!” She breaks her gaze from his, shaking her head and staring down at the floor. “I don’t deserve that promotion.”
Kanan gently lifts her head so that her eyes meet his again. “No one trusting someone with authority expects them to be perfect,” Kanan reminds her. “Everyone here has made a wrong call, has failed to complete a mission—which you didn’t, by the way—but that doesn’t mean they’re a failure. You weren’t treating anyone like they were expendable—your optimism led you not to give up. You were determined to get those supplies to those in need and refused to give up hope.” Tones similar to those he uses when teaching Ezra a lesson color his voice, though with considerably less frustration. “The only way to rise above your mistakes is to accept the lessons they teach and apply them in the future. Letting your mistakes destroy your faith in yourself isn’t going to help anyone.”
Hera listens intently, his sincerity like a bacta patch on a wound.
“Sato could hear all of the comms between you and Phoenix Squadron, and he didn’t demote you or chastise you. Clearly, he doesn’t blame you for the lives that were lost.” Kanan squeezes her tighter reassuringly. “No one does.”
His voice becomes harder, more insistent. “And of course you deserve the promotion.” He sounds offended at the thought of anyone suggesting otherwise. “You didn’t volunteer to leave the mission—you were committed to seeing it through. But when I volunteered you for the mission to Shantipole, you dove in—literally—and headed straight into a world that no ship is supposed to be able to escape from—but you did. You’d only flown that B-wing once before joining the battle, but you flew it like it was built for you. You’re the reason those supplies did get to those people. When I recommended your promotion, Sato didn’t waste a second before agreeing with me.”
Kanan’s words replace her guilt and grief with a swelling of gratitude and comfort. Hera won’t forget those who had died today. She’ll be more careful to see when a situation requires a retreat, but she won’t let her confidence in herself die. “Thank you, Kanan,” she tells him, her heart full. He places his forehead against hers, and they share a rare moment of contentment and peace, enjoying each other’s presence.
Hera reluctantly breaks the silence after a minute or so, lifting her forehead from his.“We should probably get back home,” she tells the Jedi. “I liked that B-wing, but that doesn’t mean I’m letting the kids wreck the Ghost.” Kanan’s flash of disappointment is so endearing. She lifts his chin reassuringly.
“It’ll be all right, fearless leader.”
Kanan unravels his arms from around her, replying indignantly, “Hey, no, you’re officially the leader now.” They’d had the argument many times, each insisting that the other is the leader of their crew. Hera always tells him that “captain of the ship” and “leader” are two different things.
Now she rolls her eyes, smiling, but doesn’t correct him this time.
“I guess it’s about time we get back, anyway,” Kanan continues before she changes her mind and decides to refute him. “How long has it been since you’ve eaten something?”
Hera’s brows knit as she attempts to remember. “Yeah, too long,” Kanan’s suspicions seem to have been confirmed. “Come on.” He takes her hand and pulls her up, out of the alcove, and into the hallway. They share a comfortable silence all the way back to the Ghost, which Hera now realizes Kanan must have left to come find her. Even more affection for him to rises in her at the realization.
When the cockpit opens, the two release each others’ hands and are greeted by a rush of cheers and pumping fists. Even Chopper waves his grasping arms and spins around in celebration.
“Go Hera!” Ezra yells.
“About time you got promoted,” Zeb grins.
“Congratulations, Hera,” Sabine tells her earnestly.
“Mom got promoted! Mom got promoted!” Chopper chants triumphantly.
Hera chuckles, heart overflowing with fondness for her crew. “All right, all right,” she tells them. “You’re going to make the rest of the ship think that something’s wrong.”
“Who cares?” Ezra says as he pulls everyone into a group hug. “Hera cares,” Kanan replies, but he puts one arm around her and another around Sabine. The hug is a little awkward, with Zeb being so much taller than Ezra and Sabine and Chopper standing in the middle of the circle, but in that moment, the crew feels truly united.
“Okay, I can’t stand Zeb’s smell anymore,” Ezra quips, stepping out of the circle. Chopper rolls over and smacks him with a grasping arm.
“Ow! You always do that!” The blue-haired boy zips into the cargo hold, trying to get away from Chopper, who continues whacking him as he pursues.
The rest of the family shares exasperated smiles.
Kanan nudges Hera forward, dropping his arms from hers and Sabine’s shoulders.
“Lead the way, Captain Hera,” he tells her, that crooked smile of his setting the inside of Hera aglow. “We’re all behind you.”

Sabine’s Big Day
I’m sorry for the delay, things have been a bit crazy in my life. I hope you enjoy the next Part of The Big Day (AO3)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sabine dabbed carefully at her teary eyes, she didn’t want to ruin her makeup, but she couldn’t help but cry. Even anxiously pacing around, Marinette was an absolute vision in her dress. And it didn’t help that Tom kept bursting into tears every time he looked at their daughter.
But no matter how much the sight made her tear up, she couldn’t take her eyes off her daughter as she tried to calm her.
“… And if Hawkmoth decides to akumatize someone?”
“Then Ladybug will handle it,” she said soothingly. “Chat Noir too,” she added as an afterthought. Unfortunately, her words didn’t seem to offer any comfort; instead, they just sent Marinette pacing in the opposite direction, wringing her hands.
“Sweetheart, don’t you think there are other things to stress over today?” She shot Tom a look as he seemingly realized what he had just said.
“Not that there is anything to worry about, dear! It’s your wedding day; this will be one of the happiest days of your life…” she trailed off as she caught sight of Fang, who seemed to be admiring himself in the mirror. Her thoughts immediately jumped to the father of the groom and the surprise Gina and Anarka had planned for Marinette and Luka.
Maybe there were a few things to worry about.
Marinette didn’t seem to hear her though, as she continued on with her tirade. “But weddings always make people stressed! All it takes is one miscommunication between the florist and the venue, and poof! Suddenly there’s an akuma that turns people into topiaries!”
She remembered that akuma all too well. She and Tom had had the misfortune of delivering a cake to that wedding when the akuma occurred. While they had avoided being turned into shrubs, it had been a little too close for comfort.
The scratching of scales against the wood floor caught her attention, and then she felt a tail brush against her ankle. She watched as Fang laid his head on her daughter’s foot, stopping her midstep as he nuzzled her leg.
Marinette froze, before her lips curled into a soft smile.“Thank you, Fang,” Marinette whispered as she knelt to scratch the flower girl's head.
“Honey…” she reached out to her daughter, gently clasping Marinette's hands in hers. “Are you sure it’s really an akuma that you’re worried about?”
“Marrying Luka is the easiest decision I'll ever make.” She began to tear up at her daughter’s words and the conviction with which she had said them. “I love him, mom. He makes me happy.”
Marinette had always been indecisive and anxious, but Luka had always been able to soothe whatever storm was brewing in her daughter’s mind.
“I know, darling.” She felt her husband’s hand settle on her shoulder.
And then they were all hugging and crying.
“Mama, Papa! You’re making me ruin your makeup!”
“You look beautiful, darling,” she heard Tom say through his sniffles.
“But let’s get you cleaned up! You have an aisle to walk down!”
***
She took her place at Marinette’s right, as Tom took his place on Marinette’s left. She forced back the tears that were threatening to well up in her eyes as Marinette looped her arms through theirs. Marinette had been adamant that either they both walk her down the aisle or no one would.
She had always known Marinette would grow up one day, but it felt so soon. It felt like just yesterday she had been holding her baby in her arms for the first time.
The moment almost didn’t feel real.
Was this how her father had felt? Right before he walked her down the aisle?
She didn’t know if she was ready to let go of her little girl yet. She knew she wasn’t losing her daughter but rather gaining a son. But it was hard knowing her baby was all grown up with a life of her own.
Her eyes met Tom’s over Marinette’s head.
Tears were leaking out of the corner of his eyes, but he was smiling. She was too.
Luka loved Marinette so much, and they had so much happiness ahead of them.
But Marinette would always be her baby girl.
The music from inside the ceremony room swelled, and she felt Marinette squeeze her arm. And then the doors opened, and they stepped towards Marinette’s future.
***
She wasn’t sure if she should sink in her seat or leap to her feet and haul Adrien out by his ear.
She had once thought of him as the dear boy, even after Marinette moved on from him. He had always seemed so sweet and polite.
But just over a year ago, things changed.
Suddenly he had seen Marinette as more than the friend he had always claimed she was, and he had begun hounding her to go out with him. She had no idea what had caused the change in his feelings, or seemingly his entire personality for that matter.
All she knew was that even as Marinette planned her own wedding to someone else— Adrien had been relentless in his pursuit; and crossed many boundaries. He had sent flowers and expensive gifts to Marinette every day, even when her daughter begged him to stop. He had shown up at Marinette’s work to surprise her. The boy had even somehow managed to get himself onto Marinette’s balcony and set up a candlelit picnic.
He was no longer the dear boy. He was simply a petulant child who didn’t understand the meaning of the word no.
Truth be told, she wasn’t entirely sure why he was here in the first place. Perhaps foolishly, she had thought he would have had the grace and dignity to turn down the invitation he had received as a professional courtesy.
But it seemed Adrien had decided to use the opportunity to confess his love for Marinette one more time, even going so far as to call them soulmates.
She hadn’t been sure if she should leap to her feet or sink into her seat when he stood, but she had to hold back a smile at the way he seemed to shrink under Marinette and Luka's glares.
Was it petty? Maybe. But under the circumstances, she could forgive herself.
She did allow herself to smile when Adrien sat down, looking thoroughly cowed.
She still couldn’t believe how much Marinette sometimes sounded like Ladybug. It was uncanny.
***
She leaned into her husband’s side as they watched Luka and Marinette seemingly float across the dance floor. It still felt surreal, knowing her little girl was a married woman now. But it was the best kind of surreal, like that wonderful place between sleep and being awake, where all the best dreams happened.
And looking at the two of them twirl around in each other’s arms, lost in each others’ eyes, tears gathered in the corner of her eyes again.
“It feels like just yesterday that was us.”
She nodded as Tom wrapped his arm around her, but her eyes never left her daughter and new son.
***
Jagged’s toast had certainly been… something.
As wonderful as Luka was at soothing Marinette’s anxieties, she had the distinct feeling having Anarka and Jagged Stone as in-laws was going to have the direct opposite effect on Tom. But it had all been fine in the end, and the croque-en-bouche had escaped Jagged’s toast mostly unscathed.
She chuckled as she caught sight of the newlyweds, who seemed to be off in their own little world. They probably would have been fine if the croque-en-bouche hadn’t made it out in one piece.
There was a good chance they might not have even noticed.
***
She was still chuckling, hours later, at the bouquet toss. She knew she would get an earful from her cousin and her daughters the next morning. But it was worth it. And it had seemed no one was willing to argue the results of the bouquet toss, which made it even better.
“I’m glad te call her me daughter.” Anarka settled herself down in the chair beside her, eyes trained on Marinette and Luka as they danced to the last song of the night.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better son,” she murmured in reply.
They sat there as they watched their children glow with happiness. She really couldn’t have asked for a better son.
He always knew how to soothe Marinette when she was plagued with stress and anxiety. He was the wind beneath her wings lifting her to fly even higher when she was at her best.
He let Marinette shine bright without diminishing his own light.
The music was coming to a close. Even as the last notes of the song still played, the couple starting making their towards the doors, waving their goodbyes to those still present.
Watching Marinette and Luka walk out the door, their fingers entwined, warm filled her chest. Even if today hadn’t gone exactly as planned, they were happy and that was all that mattered.
There was nothing to worry about.
“Ye think they’ll like the surprise?”

As Family Does - SWR
In snippets, Hera experiences the ups and downs of motherhood, and all the wonderful relationships her son has with family near and so very far away.
WORD COUNT: 2206
XXX
Kanan
A sharp, desperate cry, and Hera’s world changed forever.
Jacen Syndulla was a testament to his parents’ strength long before he came into the world. He emerged bloodied, during battle and war, but the galaxy suddenly recentered itself around this tiny, helpless being.
Hera should have been used to this kind of change by now- in less than a year, her whole life had been broken and reformed in more ways than she could count.
And yet- so much of it was good, Hera thought, as the squirming baby was placed on her chest. This love she felt was so familiar, after carrying her son for 9 months, after loving his father, after being family and foster mother to Ezra and Sabine. She felt it in every cell of her body, so much that it was hard to breathe.
“You did it, Hera,” Zeb said, sounding rather choked up. Hera nodded, numb to the rest of the galaxy, save for her child in her arms, and realized that there were hot tears on her face. She sobbed, her whole body convulsing, and that hurt, but she didn’t care. She’d faced greater pain and been awarded less joy at the end of it all.
The baby wailed again, and Hera gasped- the boy’s eyes had flown open, revealing a clear, vibrant blue. His skin was tinted green and his features were already sharp, sure hallmarks of his mother’s identity but his eyes- they were Kanan’s eyes.
She never thought she’d see them again, and she sobbed harder. Even with the hormone changes that came with pregnancy, it had been a long time since Hera had cried this much. She felt Zeb’s hand on her shoulder and the love in the air. She cried tears of happiness, as new parents do, and tears of sorrow because Kanan wasn’t there to meet his son, nor Ezra to meet his baby brother.
But still- she knew Kanan loved her and he loved their son. She knew Ezra would too, when he came home. Their love was still with her, even if they were not.
That would be enough for now. Hera had her son and her beloved’s eyes, and the love needed to carry her through this and darker days.
Chopper
Hera knew- despite her avoidance of the fact- that Jacen couldn’t stay with her forever. She wasn’t the only one in the Rebellion with a young child, but she was the only general with a newborn. Somewhere in the galaxy, there had to be a safe place for her son, and she would find it. But for now, she kept him the best she could, even if it would only be for the first months of his life.
The fear and the exhaustion of war were heightened by bringing an infant into it. They threatened Hera in her lowest moments, but then there was Zeb, putting Jacen back to sleep in the middle of the night before she could get out of bed, or Kallus quietly filling out her rising piles of paperwork when she was too busy or too tired to do it herself.
It was okay- a new challenge, a new routine, and an ever-constant show of their resilience. She witnessed love and community in all parts of her life, from her kid pilots offering to babysit, to the Organas sharing some old baby toys and clothes. Even the most unlikely of figures rallied around her, and for that, Hera was grateful. Sometimes, she would even have time to herself.
One of these calm afternoons was spent completing mission reports while Jacen slept, which Hera boldly presumed would last long enough for her to catch up on everything she had to do. As soon as she dared to hope this, however, a mechanical whirr indicated the presence of Chopper- and serenity rarely, if ever, followed him.
Where is the new one? He asked, disregarding the fact that Hera was very clearly busy.
“The new one- you mean Jacen?”
He’s new. Her droid was very matter-of-fact about this statement.
“He’s a baby, Chop,” Hera amended, and the astromech beside her warbled in disagreement.
He has not been around very long. He has not done many things either. Therefore, he is new.
“Whatever you say.”
Chopper didn’t humor her further, only groaned in complaint, and waited for a response. Hera rolled her eyes, but obliged. “He’s down for his afternoon nap. Same as yesterday. Why?”
She received no reply, other than a broken lament that the little one took too long to recharge, then her oldest companion rolled off and out of sight. Hera sighed and turned back to her work.
Later, Hera glanced at the chrono and readied herself for her son’s cries, but the Ghost remained silent and lonely. She crept down the room towards the pilot’s quarters, the door still open so that she might reach Jacen faster. Perhaps she would find him still asleep, and she could clean or shower with the extra few minutes to herself.
She instead discovered her baby wriggling happy on his cot, Chopper looming over him. One of his mechanical arms was extended, dangling Jacen’s favorite tooka in front of him. Chopper made gentle sounds, and Jacen grinned up at him.
So Chopper had a heart, beyond the occasional moment of mercy. Hera hid her mouth with her hand, ignoring the wetness in her eyes, and watched the scene from the doorway.
Zeb
It might not have been fair to blame a baby for picking favorites before he could talk, but Hera still shook her head as Zeb passed back Jacen, who wailed the second he left the Lasat’s arms. Zeb chuckled at the reaction, scratching at the back of his neck, but shrunk instantly at Hera’s glare
“Aw, com’on,” Zeb tried while Jacen furiously kicked against Hera. “He doesn’t mean anything by it. Nobody holds a candle to ya, Hera.” He finished the statement rather ungracefully, as Hera relinquished Jacen, plopping him back in Zeb’s arms. As soon as she did, Jacen giggled, clutching at Zeb’s fur and gurgling happily, his woes entirely forgotten.
“You’d think he’d be a little more grateful to the one who feeds him,” Hera said dryly, regarding Jacen with her hands on her hips. Zeb shrugged, looking vaguely sheepish.
“I’m just softer than ya, that’s all,” Zeb assured her, snuggling Jacen against his chest. When Hera raised an eyebrow at him, he laughed in surprise.
“Lasat kits like to sleep on their parents,” he explained, “but some of us like to say that they prefer the Lasat with the longest and softest fur.”
“Well, you certainly have me beat there,” Hera conceded, and Zem hummed in agreement, rocking Jacen in his arms. He babbled cheerfully, and Zeb laughed again. “Maybe nobody holds a candle to Uncle Zeb, either,” she said, her tone hushed, and Zeb froze. “We’re both lucky to have you.”
Zeb didn’t say anything for a long moment, then he shifted Jacen to one side and slung his free arm around Hera’s shoulders. She leaned into the embrace, and Zeb pulled her closer.
“We’re family,” he said gruffly, his voice suspiciously thick. “Of course I’ll take care of you both.”
The admonition sent warmth flooding through Hera’s chest, and she sniffed. That was what she’d count on through it all- her family and their love, unfaltering.
Sabine
Each of Jacen’s milestones- his first smile and wave and babble of a word- came with the reminder that Kanan wasn’t there to witness them too. Her son had just started to lift his own head when the anniversary of his father’s death passed, and Hera realized with grief weighing on her heart that even the idea of Kanan would be unfamiliar to Jacen for the first years of his life.
Her sorrow at the fact that “Dada” wouldn’t be among Jacen’s collection of first words (which included “Mama,” “ship,” “no!” and “Chop”) was expressed to Sabine during an exhausted and teary conversation. Together, they concluded that Kanan would have made a great dad, if he didn’t collapse from the stress while doing it, and the two women held each other until the talk turned back to recollecting fond memories at laughter at what once was.
In one of the biggest shocks of Hera’s life, the grief became lighter and easier to carry. She knew it would never leave her, but at least she didn’t bear it alone.
When Jacen turned one, she declared it a happy occasion and resolved not to spend too long dwelling on those not present to celebrate with them. There were still wistful smiles and comforting hugs, but as luck would have it, she had Zeb, Alexsandr, Rex, and Sabine all with her to mark the occasion, and that was a happy blessing on its own.
Jacen destroyed the small cake Alexsandr had made for him with pudgy fists, smearing it all over his face and onesie. Hera laughed, trying not to think of the possibility of finding uneaten food in Jacen’s diaper again, and their small family celebrated, and it was good.
They exchanged presents before everyone had to return to their respective duties. Mother and son received a collection of toys and bigger clothes, and Hera was even gifted a nice bottle of wine for her to enjoy after surviving a year of motherhood.
At the end, when it was just her and Sabine sweeping crumbs off the floor of the galley, the young Mandalorian presented her a final gift. An intricately bound book, made from sketch flimsi and filled with page after page of illustrations. It told a story, in few words and in brilliant, dynamic colors, of a Jedi, a hero, on quests to make the galaxy a better place. The Jedi wielded a blue lightsaber, and although he could be grumpy, he was deeply loyal to his friends, and he always came in to save the day. His face was unmistakable, his demeanor kind and familiar.
“So Jacen can know his dad,” Sabine said, and her voice was carefully measured. “I never thought I’d illustrate a kid’s book.”
Hera had no words, so she threw her arms around Sabine instead, murmuring her thanks through her tears. Sabine accepted the hug, squeezing Hera just as tight, and they stayed that way for a long while.
Ezra
Jacen grew and grew until he no longer fit in her arms- or rather, he wiggled out of them every time Hera tried to pick him up. He started to beg to learn how to fly as the war drew to a close but it wasn’t until after the Battle of Endor that Hera felt the skies were safe enough for her son.
Sabine teased her that Jacen inherited his recklessness from both sides of the family. Hera couldn’t bring herself to disagree, but she looked around at her friends and family- Mandalorians and Lasats and spies and galactic heroes- and thought that her child’s thrill-seeking tendencies came more from his company rather than his blood.
The conclusion of the war didn’t mean the end of the fighting, but peace was at last on the horizon and her fellow rebels begun planning their lives in this new, free galaxy. Hera could be a mother full-time now, and not have to worry if each goodbye to her son would be her last.
She thought that this would mean fulfillment- and in many ways, it did. The galaxy was entering a new age, but there were too many things left behind for Hera to move on completely. Much of it, she would never get back- but for some, there remained hope of rescue.
She saw so much of Ezra in Jacen. His energy, for one, and his innocence. His optimism, too- Jacen was a happy baby and nothing short of an ebullient child. Hera and Kallus liked to joke that his smile could light up the galaxy. It was impossible, when gazing into Jacen’s blue eyes, not to see the hope and love of another boy who once looked to her as a mother. They had so much in common, these children of war, but their biggest similarity was those who loved them.
Sabine was the first one to teach her the bittersweet pride of a child leaving the nest, and she came to Hera again to tell her that she must go. Hera had fear and love and faith for her, but little surprise when Sabine promised to bring Ezra home. With a blessing and a plea to stay safe, she hugged Sabine tight and watched her set off into the galaxy again.
When evening fell, and Hera was alone again, Jacen approached his mother and snuggled into her arms. As much as she tried to protect her son, he always seemed to know when she was sad.
Hera didn’t think that she’d ever be complete without Kanan, without Ezra, without everyone she’d lost in a lifetime at war. But she was not alone, she knew- she had her son in her embrace and a family in every corner of the galaxy. That, for now, was enough, and she had hope that she would see them all again one day.

When Ezra sacrificed himself to save his family and Lothal, he accepted the fact that he might spend the rest of his life lost in Wild Space with Thrawn. He didn’t let himself dwell on the what ifs or maybes that filtered in and out of his head. It was better not to think of them in case Sabine never got his message. He still had hope that she would find him one day but he didn’t allow himself the luxury of expecting rescue anytime soon.
So, needless to say, he was pleasantly surprised when she showed up with Ahsoka eleven months into his self imposed solitude. He listened with bated breath as she detailed everything that he had missed while he was gone, his heart nearly leaping from his chest when she told him Kanan was alive. Somehow, against all odds he had survived the explosion at the fuel depot.
He had felt Kanan’s presence in his mind but he had thought...he just thought it was an impression, a faded memory of his master. He never imagined it was actually him.
Ezra didn’t realize he was crying until Sabine handed him a cloth to wipe his face.
When they finally made it to Yavin IV, Ezra felt like he was going to explode with excitement. He was finally going to see his family again. In the grand scheme of things, eleven months wasn’t that long of a time span but to Ezra, it felt like a lifetime.
He bounded down the ramp the second Ahsoka landed the small freighter, taking off across the tarmac to where he saw the Ghost parked in the shadow of the crumbling temple that hid the rebel base. He paid no attention to the flight hands and pilots that milled about, his eyes trained on a familiar profile standing at the base of the Ghost.
Ezra slammed into his master’s back, causing Kanan to stumble with the force of his embrace. He clung to him, his shoulders hitching with desperate cries, Kanan was here. He was alive.
“You’re alive!” he said, pulling away as Kanan turned to face him. There was thick scarring on his old master’s face, ropy while lines that trailed down the right side, disappearing down past the collar of his shirt. His eyes were still the familiar shade of teal that Ezra remembered and his hair had grown long since his absence, tried back into a loose bun. Some of the stands had slipped free and framed his smiling face.
“I’m alive.” Kanan echoed, his happiness radiation through their bond and filling Ezra with warmth. “And so are you.”
“How? How did you survive that explosion?”
“It’s a long story.” Ezra could feel Kanan’s smile reflected on his own face, pulling at the corners of his mouth. “It’s good to see you kid.”
Ezra opened his mouth to respond when he paused, his mind registering the small being strapped to his master’s chest.
It was a baby, with the same warm amber skin as Kanan only there were patches of green on its cheeks and chubby little arms and legs. It had pointed ears and a shock of green hair a shade darker than Hera’s skin tone. Ezra blinked in confusion before saying, “What is that?”
“It’s a baby Ezra.” Kanan replied, his eyes sparkling with mirth.
“Yeah I get it’s a baby but why do you have it?”
“He’s my baby.”
Ezra frowned. “Kanan, you can’t just take other people's babies. Or did you like, find this one on a mission or something?”
Behind him, he heard Ahsoka snort with laughter as she and Sabine finally caught up.
“I didn’t take someone else's baby Ezra.” Kanan said indignantly, rolling the little baby toes between his scarred fingers. “He’s my baby. This is Jacen.”
“Your baby?”
Sabine punched him on the arm. “Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, Hera had a baby.”
“Hera had a what?”
“Did wild space fry your brain or something?” Kanan asked with a smirk, the little baby strapped to his chest gurgling happily as Ahsoka tickled his chin with one of her long orange fingers.
“Maybe it’s hyperspace sickness?” she suggested. “Or a side effect of purgill travel?”
“Wait, wait, wait.” Ezra said, still trying to wrap his head around it all. “Are you telling me that you and Hera had a baby?”
“I’m pretty sure I just said that.” Sabine rolled her eyes.
Ezra gapped, his eyes darting from Kanan to the baby. He kind of did have Hera’s nose and his eyes were just like Kanan’s. “How?”
“Nope.” Kanan shook his head. “Not telling you that.”
Ezra shuttered. “Ew gross. No. I mean like, was this a planned thing or I don’t know - did you just wake up one day and decide to have a kid? Were you going to tell the rest of us about it? How old is he? Can he use the Force like you?”
“Ezra.” Kanan took hold of his shoulders, the space between them filled with a tiny, squirming baby that was looking at Ezra with big curious eyes. He reached out a shaking finger and touched the tip of the baby’s nose. The baby giggled, his fat little hand latching on to him. “You’ve got time. You don’t have to find out everything all at once.” Kanan asked softly.
He did have the time, didn’t he? He had all the time in the galaxy. Because he was finally back where he belonged - with the rebellion, with his family. He smiled at the little bundle, feeling his soft baby skin against his own, the Force flaring like a bright spark in his mind.
“Yeah.” he breathed as the baby began to tug his fingers towards his mouth. “Wait,” he looked up at Kanan suddenly. “Does this make me an older brother?”
Kanan smiled and ruffled Ezra’s hair. “Congratulations on not being the youngest specter anymore. C’mon inside.” he said. “Hera’s meeting should be over soon and she doesn’t think you’ll be back for another day or two. I want to surprise her.”
“Kanan.” Ahsoka said wearily as they all began climbing up the ramp into the belly of the Ghost.
“What? It’ll be funny!”
“Yeah, funny when she beats your ass.” Sabine snickered.
“She would never.”
“Oh yes she would.” Sabine sniped back. “And she’d have Zeb hold you down.”
Ezra smiled. It was good to be home.

Kids Again Ch 2
Ch 2: He likes to keep his burner on
First Next>
Marinette would always remember the first time she looked through her romantic Soulmate’s eyes. She was five years old when she started crying in the middle of the day in maternelle. Nino ran to get the teacher while she gasped, trying to form her feelings into words. Her parents came to pick her up and her maman held her while she cried. When she was able to tell them what she saw, they held her close.
Her papa told her that her Soulmate must have been even more scared than she was, but that she could help look over him.
Her maman said that she wasn’t responsible to be the one to save him, that the people who were responsible for this had a duty to take care of him. She also said she didn’t have to sacrifice her own life for his.
Her maman told her that if she showed him kindness and love, the universe would make sure that they could meet one day. Marinette kept that in her heart every day. She wanted to show her soulmate that the world could be a brighter place than the dark place he lived in. She lived every happy memory to its fullest, and every night she sent a prayer into the sky; asking her guardian spirits to watch over her soulmate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Marinette was nine, she woke up in the middle of the night in a panic. She saw through her soulmate’s eyes as he got stabbed, but even after that stopped, even as he passed out from the pain, she still felt emotions coming from her soulbond. She felt like she was watching someone die right in front of her. She was frozen in terror, knowing she could do nothing to change it. She didn’t go back to sleep that night, instead, she grabbed her sewing kit and started to take the pink applique flowers off her only black dress. She then went to work on making a veil. She also found the blue dress that she had worn to her great-grandfather’s funeral. She wasn’t sure what you were supposed to wear to a funeral for your soulmate’s family, but she wanted to be ready to get dressed in the morning.
When her mother came to wake her up in the morning she shifted her gaze up to her from the floor. She had sat there to write in her journal. She opened her mouth and asked her mom the important question she needed an answer to, “Maman, can you have more than one soulmate?”
______________________________
Sabine looked around her daughter’s room when she saw the dresses Marinette was sitting next to, “It does happen. What did you see Bǎobèi?” ((mandarin: baby))
Marinette shook her head, “I didn’t see it, mama. I just felt like I was watching someone really important to me die. I can still feel the link though, so it couldn’t have been my soulmate. But I didn’t see it, I just felt it... Could I have a platonic soulmate too?”
Sabine scooped her daughter up into her arms, “You could. I think it’s very possible you do.” Marinette started crying, “Shhh, it’s okay sweetheart.” She adjusted her grip on Marinette so she could move to sit them both onto her fainting couch. “Do you want to talk about it?”
She sniffled nodding, “what do you wear to mourn someone you aren’t related to?”
“In China, you would wear a dark color to the funeral of the death of a loved one who you aren’t related to. But not black. You only wear black for your parent’s or husband’s funeral. In France, you can wear black if you want to, but any dark color is okay. If you follow your gut feeling where does your platonic soulmate live?”
Marinette furrowed her brow, “I don’t know māma, I can’t see them.”
Sabine smoothed Marinette’s hair down, “Did your heart say somewhere when I asked you?”
Marinette nodded, “America. I thought about America… but I also thought about Paris…”
She looked at her daughter in contemplation, “Meiyun, do you remember how I taught you to meditate?” Marinette nodded, “I want you to meditate with me, but I want you to focus on your soul link. Can you do that for me?”
Marinette nodded. She sat up and got into a relaxed position. Taking in a deep breath she closed her eyes. After a few moments, Sabine started talking to her, “When you breathe in I want you to gather up all your emotions, and then, as you breathe out, let them flow to the background of your mind.”
Marinette smiled, “Like music?”
She smiled at her daughter, “Exactly like music. Let your feelings be the beat of the song, and look for the melodies of your soulmates.” She watched Marinette breathe and then start to hum.
Sabine’s older sister had been a part of a multibond and she knew it ran in the family, but she wasn’t sure how she would be able to help her daughter. Her soulmate died when she was a girl, they were a platonic bond and she hadn’t even met them. Tom’s soulmate bond was also platonic. He had met him once and they were pen-pals, but their friendship had never gotten that close. When Marinette was born she had a spark in her eyes that Sabine knew was pointing towards a difficult journey for her daughter. When she started to see through her Soulmate’s eyes Sabine knew she was right. She looked at her little girl, so young and yet so strong. Her sister had the same strength when she was young, Sabine just hoped that her daughter wouldn’t follow the same path. When Marinette opened her eyes Sabine waited for her to talk, her daughter was young, but, when it was something important, she always tried to figure out what she was going to say before speaking.
“There are three other melodies. So if I include my own that makes four. My song and Jay's are really close, but the other two are a little lower? They are as close to each other as ours are though.”
Sabine smiled at her, “It sounds like you have two platonic soulmates, and that they are romantic soulmates. Multibonds are rarer in the world, but they happen more often than most people think. My sister had a multibond too, she had four soulmates total. That just means that you have a lot more love to give, and a lot more love to receive.”
Marinette nodded at her, “So I could find one of my Soulmates here in Paris?”
Sabine scooped her daughter up in her arms, “You might sweetie, but unless all four of you are together you might never know.”
Marinette tilted her head in confusion, “but why?”
Sabine smiled and booped Marinette on the nose, “soulmates have a spark when they meet each other. It’s your soul saying ‘you did it! You found my other parts!’ but that can’t happen until all the pieces of your soul are together.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eventually, Marinette learned how to pick out each of the distinct ‘voices’ of her soulmates. She knew when her platonic soulmates were hurting.
Each year her soulmate from America would mourn the same loss, her soulmate from Paris would have days where they would be filled with so much sadness and loneliness, and her Soulmate would have days where he couldn’t eat or would be running for his very life.
When her Paris bond started having the same hunger pains she got worried. She was used to the pains coming from Jason, knew exactly what they felt like and how long you went without proper nutrition before the pain kicked in.
She started reaching out to those around her, making sure that everyone she interacted with knew she was a person they could turn to.
She made herself known as someone who cared deeply about her friends.
When Chloé started being mean to her she spoke only kindness.
When Kim and Alix got into a fight she was there to hear both sides and help them see the other’s point of view.
When Nino got overwhelmed she sat quietly by his side so he knew he wasn’t alone.
She did everything she could for her friends because she was fighting the feeling that she could do nothing for her soulmates.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She was 11 when she learned all about the Gotham vigilantes.
She had some memories of Jason on the streets where he hid from Batman and had heard him talk about him, but she had never seen him.
Until she checked in Jason when he was caught in the middle of taking the tires off the batmobile. She hadn’t meant to look through his eyes, she was just very tired. When she closed her eyes for a little too long the soulbond drew her to him. She giggled when he was spooked in the middle of taking off tire number 4. She was worried when she felt his burst of fear when the vigilante placed him in the back of the batmobile. She watched him scared when he was taken to the bat-cave, heard him plead not to be taken to the cops. He sobbed telling the vigilante that he would rather die than go to the foster care system.
“Marinette, earth to Marinette.” Alix was waving their hand in front of her face, “you want to come back to Paris?”
“Huh? Oh!” Marinette jumped back. She looked around at her trio of friends.
“Dudette, what happened?” Nino reached out to hug her, then added in a soft voice, “you were laughing and then got this look of panic on your face.”
Kim was sitting behind the two of them, with Marinette by the wall she could see that the three of them had formed a barrier of sorts. She could see him watching to make sure that no one tried to eavesdrop on their conversation.
“It was really funny, he tried to steal the tires off the batmobile.”
Kim started to laugh at that, “no wonder you looked panicked. Did he get caught by the bat?”
Marinette bit her lip trying not to cry, nodding at Kim, “He did. He was so scared.”
That shut him up real quick, “Mari, look at me.” Kim reached out a hand, “Jason is going to be okay. You know he will, he’s been in tougher spots before.”
Alix scooched closer to her to lay against her shoulder, “not like he hasn’t gotten out of worse scrapes before. Didn’t you say he took down two guys with guns like last week?”
Marinette giggled and rubbed her eyes, “yeah, but they aren’t batman.”
Nino had been looking up any information about the vigilante he could find, “Netté, it says here that he has a strict no-killing policy and a soft spot for kids. Jason could beat the shit out of him and he still wouldn’t hurt him.”
That got a loud laugh from them.
“M. Lahiffe, do you have something you want to share with the class?”
They all snapped to attention, “No Ma’am.”
Their teacher nodded, “Then might I request that you all return to silent study time.”
_____________________________________
After school, they all ran to the bakery. It was a long-standing tradition to lay around Marinette’s living room and eat snacks while they did homework. Alix was throwing a paper ball into the air while Kim checked over their math assignment.
“I don’t know why you have me check, it’s not like I’m the best at math.”
“You are in this group. Nino is our french lit. guy. Mari can check over English assignments. I have History, you have maths. And then we struggle with science and geography as a group.”
“Hey! I’m good at geography!”
Alix threw their paper ball at him, “then you should have volunteered to check my geography assignment.”
Marinette interrupted the start of an argument that would become a bet that would lead to her cleaning up the mess, again. “Alix, you have to stop using so much slang in your English assignments.”
“Why? You do, I’ve seen your papers.”
“I use common slang, you’re using the slang that I’ve picked up from Jay. He uses a lot more regional slang. And you know our teacher has given you marks off for it in the past.”
“Not my fault that he didn’t understand my essay.”
Marinette rolled her eyes, “haven’t you ever heard of writing to your audience?”
Kim laughed at her, “Mari, you sound just like Nino!”
She stuck her tongue out at him, “at least I’m not the one teasing my foreign language tutor before she checks over my work.”
“You wouldn’t!” he turned on the full puppy eyes, “please Mari, you know I would fail without you.”
“Yeah, I know. Hand it over I finished Alix’s.”
They sat there for a while, each finishing their assignments and then checking over the other’s work. Quiet afternoons spent above the warm bakery always lulled them into a peaceful state. The soft sounds of writing and the speaker in the kitchen playing one of Nino’s new study playlists. Marinette always loved these moments when she felt so loved; surrounded by her best friends, able to hear drifts of the conversations on the street below. Moments like these were feelings she cherished, images that she engraved into her mind. Opening her small pink journal she started writing to Jason. She wanted to tell him everything about her life, so until she could see him in person she wrote to him.
Nino was the first one to break the gentle silence, “Netté, why do you think he was so scared?”
Alix and Kim both looked up from where they were doing the maths homework. With all their gazes on her she knew she had to say something, “he doesn’t want to go into the foster care system.” She took a deep breath and started to doodle on the corner of her page, “he, well he knows some kids who have been in the system. It’s really corrupt in Gotham. A lot… a lot of foster care parents are bad people. They abuse their wards and get the money from the system. Older kids get it worse, a-an-and he’s 13 now. S-s-so he would ha-ve a harder time getting a good family.”
She had started crying and was now quietly sobbing. Kim moved closer and picked her up to hold in his lap. Nino and Alix moved closer to join the group hug.
After she had calmed down enough to talk Alix asked her, “Mar, why don’t you try to check in on him?”
She sighed, whipping her tears away, “I tried earlier during lunch, I think he was asleep though.” She bit her lip, “I could try again maybe, but he seems calm now. What if I just worry him more?”
“It’s up to you Netté. We are here to support you, not tell you what you should do about your bond.”
She nodded, “I think I’ll wait then.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the next two years, she learned a lot more about Gotham’s heroes vigilantes. Jason was the new Robin. His new brother was the first Robin, now he had a new alias Nightwing. Bruce Wayne is Batman was a huge secret that was dropped on her. One that her three closest friends knew too. They had been sworn to secrecy, but she couldn’t not tell them.
They were her small family, and if she wasn’t going to tell her parents then she was going to tell them. Sure, his identity needed to be protected. But what harm could four people from halfway across the world do? She started collecting news clippings of Robin. Each time he helped someone and they caught him on camera. The kids around the blocks he patrolled being in awe of the kid in the bright colors who would help anyone who needed it. She got to see him splitting off from patrol to take food to a building he knew had people living in it.
Then came the other good moments. His butler, who was more grandfather than employee, taught him how to cook. His new father, the adoption papers went through really fast, enrolled him in school. Bruce saw how much Jason liked to read and put a couple large bookcases in his room. Then bought him different books that he thought might interest him. He was trying, but things were still awkward sometimes. His brother, Richard but people called him Dick, was in the circus before becoming a Wayne. He taught Jason to use his natural dexterity to flip around attackers, telling him that a moving target was harder to hit. The robin colors made you easy to see, so you had to be fast and think on your feet. If you never stopped moving then they couldn't hit you.
Marinette asked her parents if she could continue her gymnastics classes. They were only a little surprised. She had taken a break when her soulbond had gotten to be too much, but knowing that he was safe meant she could focus on herself again.
That started with being fast and nimble and getting herself ready for when she ran the streets with him. She spent hours redesigning the Robin suit and making herself a hero persona. She had decided on Nightingale as a name and designed her suit in black and orange. She made her design a partner to her redesign of Jason’s Robin suit. She knew they were going to be partners, so they needed to match.
She just wished that she could be there with him now. Running the rooftops by his side, helping him, making sure he makes it home.

The Never Ending Cycle of Proposals
This is a continuation of this post and the idea was presented by @mystery-5-5 . I was so excited to finish it and hope you like it! :)
This was not how it was supposed to go.
Damian had made sure of it. He found and destroyed every contingency plan that Jason and the others had formed. He flew Marinette back to Paris, to her parent’s bakery so that they could be a part of the moment. There should be no possible way things could go sideways.
Clearly he had underestimated the members of Date Duty.
“-and then Marinette fell down the stairs! Can you believe it? It was her big debut at the Wayne Gala as Damian’s girlfriend and this girl got so nervous that she tripped over her own two feet.”
“That’s our Marinette. As graceful as ever.”
A boisterous laughter filled Damian’s ears as the bakery door snapped shut behind him. Checking his watch, he tried to recall how long he had been gone. It couldn’t have been more than ten minutes. How did Jason get to Paris?
“Oh! Damian sweetie, look who just flew in to check in on us and low and behold, he didn’t even know that you and Marinette had the exact same thought! How crazy is that?”
Damian plastered on his best fake smile as his eyes attempted to burn Jason’s smirk off his face.
“Very crazy indeed Sabine. Do you mind if my brother and I excuse ourselves for a moment?”
“Oh! Not at all, we should really be getting ready to open anyways. Please, feel free to head up to the apartment. Marinette should be back from Alya’s soon, but make yourselves at home boys.”
They both nodded as Damian stalked behind Jason, forcing him to take the steps two at a time. As Jason threw open the door, he finally released the laughter that he had been holding back.
“I really didn’t think you were going to make it. If you actually had any powers, I would’ve been scared for my life down there.”
“I don’t need powers to kill you Todd.”
Jason reached out to ruffle Damian’s hair, his smirk only fueling the smaller boy’s rage.
“What are you doing here Todd? This was supposed to be a relaxing vacation for Marinette to see her parents. You are neither relaxing or her parents.”
“Oh don’t be coy with me Dami, I know what you’re really here for, we all do in fact. Did you really think you could get away with proposing to Marinette without getting through us first? You only tore up some fake plans, plans meant to lure you into revealing when you were going to propose. Considering how quick you were to get Marinette on a plane without saying goodbye tells me you plan on doing it this week.”
Damian counted backward from ten as he tried to consider all of his options left. He had taken into consideration that the plans could be fake, but there should’ve been no way that they could’ve tracked him to Paris. He paid in cash at the airport for the tickets and flew economy, economy for crying out loud!
“I thought your whole little club was to protect Marinette from heartbreak, there was no mention of protecting her from proposals.”
“Oh, but that’s where you’re wrong Damian.” The look on Jason’s face was unnerving to say the least, but Damian refused to back down. This was his girlfriend, his soon to be finance, and the only woman he wanted to love for the rest of his life. There was no way he would let some street rat like Jason stop him.
“I refuse to allow you to ruin this Todd.”
“Allow implies that you think you have control over this and I can assure you that you don’t. Marinette will not be leaving Paris with a ring on her finger, marriage is out of the question. You are lucky that we have allowed you two to be together for so long. You are too dangerous for her demon spawn and marriage places an even larger target on her back than the one she already has.”
“Are you prepared to be defeated protecting your ideals Todd?”
“Are you Damian?”
Damian felt the low growl in the back of his throat itching it’s way forward. He was so close to Jason’s face, he could end this right here and now, throw him in the guest room and never look back.
“Damian? Jason? What are you two doing here? And alone at that?”
Both turned their attention to the door where Marinette stood, a sheepish expression on her face as if she could feel the tension radiating off the two men.
“Hey princess! I was just stopping by to check in on your parents and I definitely had no idea that you and Damian were here! You two lovebirds should’ve told someone before running off to Paris like that.”
Jason pulled Marinette into a tight hug, sticking his tongue out behind her head at Damian.
“Well, I did. I told Adrien just in case anything happened.”
One look at Jason’s smug expression and Damian knew. One little blonde went racing to his brother before he and Marinette had even boarded the plane.
“Oh that’s good then, I’m glad someone knew. I’ll leave you two alone now, after all, I have places to be and people to see and I’m sure you have a wonderful vacation planned for Damian here.”
Marinette nodded with little enthusiasm as she waved bye to Jason, locking the door behind him.
“Damian, what was that about?”
He shook his head as he pulled her forward placing a small kiss on her forehead.
“I wish I knew habibti.”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Damian was on full alert for the next couple of days, unable to relax and enjoy his time with Marinette’s family for fear that one of his nemesis would pop out at any moment and steal the ring hidden safely inside his coat pocket. Every once in a while, he would find his hand absentmindedly searching for the box, just as a reassurance that it was still there.
He wasn’t scared of the members of Date Duty, but he was scared that the moment that he had planned out for so long would be ruined by a handful of imbeciles.
“Oh look! It’s Chloe and Luka! I didn’t know they were in town.”
Damian's attention became hyper focused as he narrowed in on the suspicious couple waving them over. There was no way that two members of Jason’s little club decided to fly back on the same week that he and Marinette did.
He smiled and shook hands with Luka as they chatted idly for a few minutes. Marinette promised to catch up with them later before leaning in to hug Chloe. The blonde turned her attention to him as she leaned in and hugged him bye as well. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing suspicious, nothing-
“Fuck.”
Damian’s hand went straight to his now empty pocket. He searched frantically to be sure that it hadn’t fallen in any holes that he wasn’t aware of, but alas, it was gone. Marinette held onto his hand tightly, concern filling her eyes, but he waved her off.
If that’s how Todd wanted to play, then fine. Damian was ready. It was time for Jason to bring it on. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Damian wasn’t sure how he thought the rest of the week would play out, but this was not it.
Monday he had gone to buy another ring when he ran into Tony Stark. He claimed he was there to get his wife a unique gift from Paris. Turns out a unique gift meant buying her every jewelry store in Paris, or at least majority shares, effectively destroying Damian’s chances of finding a new ring.
Tuesday he decided to just propose without the ring, after all, it just meant she could pick out a new one whenever they hit stateside again. They had made it all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower, watching the sunset with her curled into his side as they leaned on the railing. He wanted to wait until the tower had cleared a bit, right when the sun dipped below the horizon, but much to his fear a large squeal erupted from the platform.
None other than Jagged Stone had decided to do an impromptu concert on top of the Eiffel Tower. Soon, between the noise and the crowd, Damian couldn’t even think straight, much less make space to go down on one knee. They called it a night with the question still on the tip of his tongue.
By Wednesday, Sabine had caught on to the real reason they were there. She pulled him to the side along with Tom where the both offered her engagement ring. Damian finally felt like he had caught a break. How foolish that was.
They walked into Marinette’s favorite restaurant that night only to find out that it had been bought out for the night by the Agreste family. He apparently decided that this would be an excellent date night spot for him and Kagami.
Thursday came and went with no attempts made. He had barely made it out of bed when he heard two voices in the kitchen. Praying to whatever God would hear him, Damian opened the door only to feel his heart drop. Tim and Dick sat in the kitchen while Marinette heated up some coffee, telling her all about the business deal they were taking care of in Paris.
Lucky for them, they had a day off and wanted to spend it with their favorite couple.
As Friday’s sun rolled in, Damian felt defeated.
“Mon amour, are you even listening?”
Damian nodded absentmindedly as he fiddled with the ring in his pocket.
“So do you want to go to this little reunion dinner tonight?”
“With who?”
“With my old classmates? I think Dick and Tim might stop by if they get out early today. Should be fun!”
He attempted a smile for her sake as he sent her a small nod. So on their last night in Paris, they all decided to gather in one spot making it impossible for Damian to sneak out with Marinette. It felt pretty foolproof.
“Damian, why have you been so out of it lately? This whole week you have been constantly checking over your shoulder. Are you worried about something?”
Marinette gathered his hand as she sunk on to the bed beside him.
“I just wanted this trip to be special, but a couple of special idiots have proved to make that nearly impossible. I don’t know how you dealt with them over the years.”
“Well, it felt nearly hopeless. I was convinced I was going to be single forever, but one man swooped in and saved me making me feel like there was nothing those special idiots could do. I’d like to think that he feels the same way when it comes to me. After all, a proposal doesn’t need to be in some big memorable place, it just needs to be between two people who love each other.”
Damian’s mouth gaped like a fish out of water as he tried to stutter out a denial, but it was hopeless. His cheeks felt like they were a hundred degrees as her laughter floated through the air.
“How did you know?”
“Date Duty had been disabled for a year and a half now. For them to all conveniently show up in Paris on the same week that we did? Well I’m not a big believer in coincidences when it comes to that group.”
Damian reached inside his pocket, pulling out the delicate ring that Sabine had given him a few days prior. A few tears formed in the corner of Marinette’s eyes as she covered her splitting smile with her hand.
“Marinette Dupain-Cheng, you have amazed me at every turn since the first time I saw you many years ago. You are a strong, creative, loving and beautifully confident woman. You are my first thought in the morning and my last as I drift to sleep at night. I can’t imagine living with anyone else by my side. Please, will you marry me?”
Marinette nodded as she offered her left hand, allowing him to slip on her mother’s ring. It was no where close to the proposal that he had planned, but as her lips crashed into his, it couldn’t have made him happier.
Maybe when he saw Jason’s little club tonight, he would thank them.
After all, they lead him to the woman he loved and without their persistence, his relationship wouldn’t be as strong as it is today.
He had finally broken the never ending cycle, and man, did it feel good.

Over This (Over you)
Quick one-shot. Class salt ahead. this about the fall of Lila getting exposed. Kind of cliche at this point. Enjoy.
Surprisingly, it was Mylene who found out the truth first. Lila had told a lie about a famous performer who taught her all about filmmaking.
The issue?
The guy had died three years before Lila was born.
It all snowballed from there.
She told Ivan who told Nathanial.
Nathanial just shrugged it off because Lila knew a lot of people, maybe she just got confused. Then he overheard Lila brag about her weekend, then she casually thrown in that Stan Lee had dropped in. And his heart stopped.
Because Nathanial didn’t care who you were: Stan lee was not a name you confused for anyone else’s. He had been a legend. Stan Lee had been a god to comic book lovers everywhere. Stan Lee was dead.
Nathanial told Nino first.
Nino had thought it was an honest mistake; a lapse in memory on Lila’s part. Still the suspicious didn’t just go away.
And when he heard her bragging about working with the famous DJ Marshmallow; that she helped him compose his biggest hit.
Nino paled when he remembered that he had played nearly all of Marshmallow’s jams to Lila and she hadn’t known a single one. Even asked if it was Nino’s own work.
That was when he got Alya involved. It had been Saturday, date night, but they were stuck babysitting their little siblings. They tended to find themselves babysitting a lot. They couldn’t find anyone willing to cover for them.
Nino carefully brought up the Lila situation.
Alya at first came to Lila’s defense. She had already dealt with Marinette’s jealousy and determination to call Lila a liar. Lila had been bullied by Marinette for months. It got to the point where the whole class had no choice but to ostracize the Bluenette like they did Chloe until she changed her evil way. Even Adrien gave the girl the cold shoulder. A few of them even went out of their way to show Marinette what it was like to be bullied; a trip here or there, torn up school notes, an “accidently” spilled drink on something Marinette had been designing. When Marinette didn’t change, and seemingly became friends with Chloe, Kagami, and kids from other classes; Alya had to put her foot down, and the rest of the class followed suit. They would not be friends with Marinette anymore.
After that, Alya refused to let anyone talk bad about her new bestie. Even if that person was her boyfriend. However, before she could get angry, Nino talked her down. And Alya quickly conceded that two was a coincidence, three times was a pattern.
“Fine,” Alya huffed and pulled out her phone to research Lila Rossi. It would be easy show the entire class just how amazing her best friends was, and then the nasty rumors of her being a liar would stop once and for all.
However as Alya searched for information on her new friend, she found google to be lacking. Slowly but surely as Alya tried several different search methods, the righteous feeling she had started with faded away as desperation filled her.
No, she thought with growing horror, Lila was telling the truth. She had to be.
Alya had supported her. She had filled the Ladyblog of interviews from Lila. She had-She had! Lila couldn’t be lying.
But no matter how long Alya searched. There was no evidence to support anything Lila had ever said.
Alya held her phone is her hands tightly and just stared at it. Tears burned in her eyes. She looked up at Nino and gasped, “Lila is a liar!”
The entire class knew within the hour.
The group chat was filled with remorse and anger. (Three akumas came out of it. Ladybug saved the day.) No one knew how to react. How should they confront Lila? How could they make her pay?
But then Rose, sweet Rose had texted something that made all their hearts stop
Rosebud: What about Marinette?
Shit, one by one they all thought, Marinette!
They had all hurt the girl, their ‘everyday Ladybug’. So much so that they had snatched the title away from her and given it to Lila, who they thought deserved it more.
Quickly, they all tried to text and call their dearest friend with apologies ready on their lips, only to hear “This number has been disconnected.”
Marinette had changed her number.
Alya and Nino had raced to the bakery as soon as their parents came from. Only for Sabine and Tom, the nicest people on the entire planet, apart from Marinette, had given them the coldest glares possible, and told them Mariette had gone a weekend trip. And that they were no longer welcome in their establishment or in their home.
By the time Monday morning rolled around, emotions were high. Adrien had tried to calm the class down, convince them that what Lila did wasn’t so bad, but they wouldn’t hear it. Most of the class waited silently as their desks, lost in their thoughts.
Until Lila strolled into class, a big smile on her face, “Wait till I tell you what I did this weekend,” And went on to talk about the celebrity she had been with.
“Liar!” Alix roared, and Kim had to hold her back from throttling Lila.
That was all spark needed for the class to start ripping into her.
Alya screamed about her ruining the Ladyblog and destroying her career; her friendship with Marinette. Nino yelled about promised connections and missed opportunities. Everyone had something to scream.
Lila tried to defend herself. However, it became increasingly clear that the game was up. There was nothing she could do to save it. She looked around helpless.
That was the scene, Marinette, Kagami, and Chloe walked in on. Marinette and Chloe had spent the entire weekend at a fashion show; models for Audrey Bourgeois, walking the runway. And when they weren’t doing that, they were at photoshoots. Kagami had tagged along for support, and the beach house they had stayed in. When the girls weren’t working, they had a blast just hanging out.
Marinette eyed the teary Lila and the angry faces of her classmates, her ex-friends, and just snorted, “Took long enough.”
Kagami just held out her hand.
Chloe huffed and handed money, “Two weeks. Just two more weeks, and I would’ve won the bet.” She stumped her foot. “Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. These morons spent over a year hanging of Lie-la’s every word and they couldn’t give me two more weeks.”
Marinette giggled at her friends antics. “I told you not to bet against her.” She said as the three walked to their desks in the back. Ignoring all the eyes on them. “Kagami doesn’t lose.”
Said girl in question smirked, “As if there was ever a chance.”
“…Marinette?” Rose said, her eyes still red from all the crying. “I’m so sorry. We should’ve listened. We should’ve believed you.”
“Yeah,” Alya cried. “Girl, I can’t believe I got fooled. I’m so sorry.”
More apologies came. Each one more sorrow filled the last. Lila watched with anger in her eyes.
When the last one was done, Marinette shrugged, “Whatever,” And went back to talking with Chloe and Kagami.
“Whatever?” Alya asked confused. “What do you mean: whatever?” She had expected an emotion reconciliation. With promise of future girls’ night and being best friends forever.
Even Lila was caught off guard, and stopped her escape from the room to watch.
“It means an American localism,” Marinette explained. “It’s mean it’s doesn’t matter; I don’t care; sure, okay. Sometimes, just to end a conversation if there’s nothing more to say.”
Nino frowned, “How can you say that? We’re really sorry!”
“And that means what?” Kagami asked, coldly.
The question caught most of the room off guard.
“This has nothing to do with you!” Alix hissed. “We’re talking with Marinette.”
Marinette crossed her arms, and leaned back in her seat, “Answer the question.” She said. “What exactly did you expect to happen? What do you even think apologizing would mean?”
Kim scratched his head, “Its means everything’s okay again; that we’re friends again.”
The three stared at him. He shifted uneasily.
“Ridiculous,” Chloe muttered.
“No,” Marinette said slowly to them. “That’s what it means. Saying sorry just implies you know what you did was wrong and that you feel bad and want to make it clear to the offended party that you are remorseful. It doesn’t actually do anything.”
Lila smirked. She was glad she stayed. The fools thought everyone would go back to the way it was. Unfortunately, Marinette had different plans.
“We are remorseful, though,” Rose pleaded. “We feel really, really bad about what we did.”
Marinette nodded, “I understand. But that doesn’t change what you did,” She explained. “You hurt me. You bullied me. You accused me of awful things. You ended our friendships. I understand that you are sorry. I accept your apology,” The other students visibly brighten with hope on their faces. “I do not forgive you. I don’t have to forgive to you. It’s not okay,” Marinette said this part directly to Kim, who used to be her oldest friend in the room. “I will not say “It’s okay”, to your apology. Because you’ll just think it okay to do it again. And it’s not. What you did was not okay. And I do not have to forgive you.”
“But we’re friends,” Juleka sobbed, “Friends forgive. Best Friends forgive.” To that Alya nodded earnestly.
“We are not friends,” Marinette said bluntly. “We haven’t been friends in a long time. I only have two friends in classroom, my best friends,” The two girls next to her preened. “Kagami and Chloe. All my other friends are in different classes.” She paused. “And before you ask, I don’t think we can be friends again. I do not want to be friends again because I can only be friends with people I trust and like. None of you meet those requirements.”
Ouch. The other students flinched back as if slapped.
Adrien stepped forward, “You’re being mean, Marinette. They’re sorry. Just let them make it up to you.” He smiled wide, hope in his eyes. “Then we can go back to the way it was before.”
Chloe raised an eyebrow, “Just how hard did you hit the ground when you fell out of that tree when we were five?”
Marinette snorted a laugh. “This isn’t a movie, Adrien,” She told him. “Life doesn’t work like that. And what about you? How sorry are you? You knew Lila was lying the entire time, and did nothing.”
Nino let out a strangled cry, “What? Bro?”
Angry glares turned toward the blond.
“No,” Marinette slammed her hands on her desk. “You don’t get to be mad at him. I do. He didn’t have to tell you Lila was lying because I already did. Me! Someone most of you have known since we were toddlers. You just met Adrien less than two years ago, there was no reason for him to think you would’ve believed him over me. It’s not like you believed Kagami when she came to class and pointed out hole in Lila’s stories. Adrien’s only crime was that he never had my back like he promised he would. Not once. And I don’t forgive him for that either,” She added to her former crush; during her speech his face had gone from scared, to relieved, to devastated.
“Sorry doesn’t fix everything,” Kagami said simply. “To think otherwise, is the same childish behavior that got you into this mess.”
Chloe nodded, “And thinking everything can just go back to the way it was, after everything, all the hurt, is just stupid,” She stated let looked over every student in class to let them know she was speaking with them too before resting her eyes on Adrien. “There’s too much damage now. This isn’t like the fights we had as kids. We can’t just share cookies and forget a second later that we we’re fight. It’s a burned bridged; scooping up the ashes and hoping for the best doesn’t change the fact that the bridge is gone. It’s just gone.”
“She’s friends with you,” Alya snapped.
“We were never friends before now,” Chloe defended, anger raging in her eyes. “We hated each other. I made her life. Never once did Marinette trust me, relied on me, thought of me as friend.”
“Nothing Chloe did actually hurt me,” Marinette shrugged. “At least not in way that matter. Because she was just a mean girl who didn’t care about me and I didn’t care about. When we became friends, it became different. Now there’s an emotional connection, trust. Now she could actually hurt me.”
“Not that I would,” The blonde quickly added. “But it’s different for you. I hurt my enemy. You hurt your friend. She expected me. She never saw you coming.”
Miss Bustier walked into class. The bell rang. Everyone went back to their. Mourning their friendships and berating their own actions.
As the days went on, some of ex-friends tried to pretend everything was alright between Marinette and them again.
Rose would try to draw her into the latest gossip. Alya would just sit down at her lunch table and just launch into a conversation but would leave once it was clear that the three girls were ignoring her.
Kim tried to joke around with her but was met with stone cold silence. Alix tried baiting her into an argument.
Those like Nino, Juleka and Max just left her alone. They knew they had done wrong and accepted the consequences.
A month later, another blow up happened.
Alya stomped into the lunchroom, right to Marinette’s table, and slammed a magazine on it, “This this why you don’t want to be friends?” She yelled gaining the attention of the entire cafeteria. “You’re too good for us now?”
Marinette glanced at the magazine; teen vogue. On the cover was Marinette wearing the latest from Audrey Bourgeois’ new line.
Alya picked up the magazine and showed her class. There were gasps. Students from the other classes just gave impressed looks when they recognized the sweet girl from Bustier’s class.
Alya sneered at Marinette, “You think better than us?”
“How could you not tell us?” Alix snapped.
Adrien nodded in agreement. He couldn’t believe Marinette wouldn’t tell him. She had to know how lonely those photoshoots got. Didn’t she care? “I would have liked to model with you. It would be nice to have a real friend on set.”
“You’re not even that good at it,” Alya said with jealousy having filled her heart since she saw magazine in the store. Her friend had her foot in the door to her fashion dreams a while Alya’s dream of being a great journalist had gone up in smoke. The Ladyblog was ruined. Her fans had been flocking for months and Alya couldn’t figure out why until the truth about Lila was revealed. Now no one trusted Alya would have the scoop. The Ladyblog was replaced by Bugout managed by Aurore. “You probably begged Chloe’s mom for the job. And she took mercy on her brat’s only friend.”
Kagami narrowed her eyes, “I am Chloe’s friend too. Luka is Chloe’s friend. Aurore is Chloe’s friend. Marc, Claude, Ondine; are all Chloe’s friends. Once again you failed to check the facts.”
“Ooohs,” Were heard from various students around the cafeteria. Nearly everyone knew by now that the Ladyblog had fallen into infamous category. It had been blacklisted as a credible resource by a majority of local news.
Not to mentions the rumors cease and desist orders from various celebrities.
“I’ve been modeling for over almost two years,” Marinette said, frost in her eyes, as she looked at her class. “Never once have I brought it up. And I’ve been on the covers of Seventeen, Elle girl, Sassy, Vogue Paris, and Cosmogirl. I was featured, along with Chloe, in a spread in Vanity Fair. And another one in W with Gigi Hadid. I walked the runways during fashion weeks for New York, London, and Paris. Never once did I brag. Never once did I think it made me better than you. Or anyone for that matter.”
The tone was far different than any they had ever heard Marinette use before. It was cold, unfeeling, and sent shivers through them. Alya, in particularly, unconsciously took a step back.
“I didn’t tell you,” She said mockingly to Alix who reddened. “Because we’re not friends. I don’t owe you anything. I don’t have to tell you anything. You’re no one to me.” Marinette glared at Alya. “No one at all. Just some wannabe journalist who ruined her own life’s work because she couldn’t remember that a good reporter checks her resources.”
“Damn,” Aurore chuckled, she sat next to Kagami and was enjoying the fireworks.
Alya opened her mouth to yell but stopped when Nino placed at hand on her shoulder and motioned around the room. All eyes were on her. She flushed.
“I don’t know what your problem is, Alya.” Marinette shrugged. “Half the time you’re blaming Lila. The other half you’ve been acting like you’ve didn’t do anything wrong. Now you’re looking for some excuse to make me the bad guy again. Just stop. You’re not a victim. You need to stop acting like you are. Hell, I’m not even the victim anymore because I moved on with my life. I have better things to do than be hurt and angry for the rest time.”
“Lila lied,” Alya repeated for the thousandth time. “I didn’t. It’s not my fault.”
“Seriously?” Marc asked from where he sat at Marinette’s lunch table. “Is she serious?” He asked Ondine who had a bewildered look on her face.
Marinette just pinched her nose. “Oh grow up! You tripped me class. Sent horrible texts that could easily been considered harassment in a court of law. Destroyed weeks of designs when you ‘accidently’ spilled your coffee on my desk. You didn’t talk to me for months. You reported false information for over a year; dragging multiple celebrities into it. When you weren’t doing that, your blog focused more on the supposed relationship between Ladybug and Chat noir than it did on actual news. Any information you actually reported was half-assed at best. I’ve seen more accurate information on Tumblr. That was Lila. That was you.”
Fire raged in Alya’s eyes, hurt clear on her face. She looked like she was going to explode.
Akuma alert anyone, Marinette thought.
“You screwed up. It happens. Let it go.” Marinette stood up, grabbed her bag. “This whole confrontation of yours was just childish. And I’m over it. I’m over you.”
“I was over you first,” Alya lunged at Marinette, with tears in her eyes, but Nino pulled her back.
Marinette rolled her eyes and moved to leave but just before she did, Marinette looked at Alya and then at the Class. “You’re ill-tempered, rash, and prone to immature behavior better suited on your little sisters. Besides the obvious, you want to know the real reason, we can’t be friends? You’re a child.”
And with a shake of her head, Marinette said. “And I’ve outgrown you.”
There was applause as Marinette left the lunch room to go transform. A smirk was on her face.
She really was over it.

The Day of Revelation (Miraculous Prompt of the Day)
“This is insane. What could have HAPPENED to her?”
Tom Dupain put his arm around his sobbing wife, doing his best to sound at all convincing. “Sabine,” he murmured, “we cannot think the worst about this situation. There are many, many explanations for where Marinette has disappeared to that aren’t disastrous, are there not?” Sighing, he added, “And when she returns, she had better have a fine one ready.”
When she didn’t answer, Tom continued, “Marinette is a very... moral young woman. She’s not the type to, you know, run off with some boy and shack up with him for a while! I couldn’t imagine whom the boy would be, anyway. The only ones I’ve seen her mooning over are Luka and Adrien, both of whom have been right here asking about her every day.”
“That doesn’t help much,” sobbed Sabine.
“And she is remarkably resourceful. If someone had... grabbed her, do you think that she wouldn’t have found some way to reach out and seek help by now?” Tom theorized, unhappily. “I do not think that the Bastille could hold her for very long.”
“But what else is there?” Sabine argued, wiping her eyes. “We have checked with every one of her school friends; none of them have seen her in a week. The police have been no help. Even Chat Noir keeps coming by, hoping to find that she’d returned, and looking shattered each time that she hasn’t. If even the superheroes are helpless...”
Sabine shook her head, hoping to wipe away this new reality. “Marinette doesn’t do this kind of thing. She was happy here! I know she was. She didn’t... run away,” she insisted. “So where could she be? Who could have taken her? And why?”
The television blared away behind her, unheard and unwatched. The chyron scrolling along the bottom of its screen -- AKUMA CRISIS: DAY 7 --- LADYBUG STILL MISSING --- STAY-AT-HOME ORDER STILL IN PLACE -- answered more of their anguished questions than either parent could possibly have guessed.
~---~
Later in the day, a loud *THUMP* outside the back door of the Dupain-Cheng residence announced an arrival.
“Please, come in,” Sabine called out. “It’s not locked.”
Tentatively, a young man wearing a black mask poked his head around the door... looking hopeful, but not expectant.
Sabine shook her head as she motioned him inside. “Nothing yet, Chat,” she told him. “Not a single word.”
Chat Noir walked into the kitchen where Sabine was sitting, his face falling, his body language screaming out defeat.
“I’m at a loss,” Chat murmured. “I have searched every square inch of this city, hoping for a footprint, a note, a charm bracelet, a pigtail holder, anything that would give me a clue where she’s gone.”
“Ah. Hullo, Chat,” Tom greeted him, as he entered the kitchen. He rested a large hand on the young hero’s shoulder and noted, “We know that you’re doing everything you can.”
“It’s not your fault,” Sabine noted. “Chat... I know that you and Marinette were good friends... are good friends! And you will be again. I know it. But you have other people to look out for, as well, and you’ll need to get some rest.”
“That’s just it,” said Chat. “I don’t know that I do! Ladybug is still missing, as well... but I haven’t heard of widespread disappearances. The villain isn’t targeting just anyone.”
“I saw the video of what happened to Ladybug on television,” Tom mused. “It was like... some kind of teleporter?”
“I hope that is all that it was, yes,” Chat sighed. “The villain caught her in some kind of glowing golden bubble. She screamed something out to me, but the bubble muffled the sound... and then, POP! she was gone. I’ve been back to the spot where it happened dozens of times, and I can’t find any trace of what happened.”
“...It’s almost as if Marinette got... captured, the same way,” he lamented. “But why would a villain go after her?”
“I... know that she’s helped you in the past,” Sabine suggested, grimly, “figuring out what some of these villains’ weaknesses are. Could she have... maybe... found the villain and been spying on him, perhaps, but he caught her and warped her away, too?”
“That’s as good a theory as any that I have,” Chat replied. “Which is to say... I’ve got nothing.”
Without another word, Chat slumped down into a chair and began crying his eyes out. Instinctively, Sabine motioned to him, then stepped forward and hugged him, fighting off her own tears as she did.
Two large arms wrapped themselves around both of them. “You can let it out, Chat,” Tom soothed him. “We’ve got you.”
Once the immediate emotional storm passed, Sabine smiled at Chat as best she could. “Marinette would feel wonderful knowing that someone like you cares this much about her,” she said. “I know that she had feelings for you once, and things didn’t line up quite as she’d hoped, but...”
“Mrs. Cheng?” a wide-eyed Chat replied. “Things... have changed since then, a bit. I kind of think that I’m the one pursuing her now. And when we find her... there are things that I need to say to her.”
“We will find her. That’s certain,” Tom declared.
Sabine wiped her eyes once more, then faced the young man in her arms. “I hate to ask this of you,” she ventured, “but... Tom and I have been over her room a dozen times already, looking for some clue as to where she’d gone, or why. We’ve come up empty... but could you come look with us for a few minutes? Maybe something will jump out at you that we’ve missed.”
Chat forced a smile. “I’d be happy to,” he replied.
~---~
The three went upstairs, where Chat applied wannabe-amateur-detective’s eyes to their surroundings.
“I’m not seeing anything... terribly new since the last time I was here,” Chat mused. “Her bed was made, her schoolbooks, her makeup, her clothes... all match what I’ve seen here before.”
He noted, without comment, that a picture of him was still up on Marinette’s wall by her bed... not as many pictures as he’d seen once before, but he was still a presence there.
“And all of her clothes are still here, other than what she was wearing,” remarked Tom, rummaging through Marinette’s dresser for the tenth time. “It’s not as if she packed a suitcase and took off. Even her suitcase is still here.”
“That’s good,” said Chat. “I agree with you; Marinette really isn’t the kind of person who’d just... run off, impulsively. The last time that I spoke with her, she didn’t give me any signs that she was anything but content.”
“When was that?” asked Sabine, from just inside the bathroom door.
“About ten days ago,” Chat replied. “I stopped by, we made light conversation, nothing out of the ordinary.”
“Hmmph,” grumbled Tom. “I almost wish there had been something odd then. It’s driving me insane having no idea what happened.”
“I wish that I could be of more help,” apologized Chat. “But nothing’s jumping out at me. Is there anything here that either of you don’t recognize?”
“There was some kind of... box in the back of her closet,” Sabine noted. “I couldn’t open it. Kind of an odd shape; I’m not sure where she got it from.”
“A box?” Chat wondered. “May I take a look?”
“Please do! That’s why you’re here,” Tom gestured. “You don’t have to ask.”
As he started moving things around in the closet, Chat turned and grinned at Sabine. “I can only imagine what Marinette would say if she knew I was doing this,” he quipped. “’MAMA! There’s a strange boy rifling through my clothes!’”
“Just this once, I think that I won’t complain about that,” Sabine said, managing a small chuckle.
Chat lifted out a box of shoes and another with some folded-up winter wear, setting them aside. “Still,” he remarked, “I don’t think that I’ll... I’ll...”
Abruptly... his voice cut off.
Tom and Sabine turned his way. The alarm in his tone got their immediate attention... as did his falling backwards, scooting away from the closet as if he’d been stung.
“No,” Chat gasped. “No, no, no, no, nonononononono!”
“Chat?” bellowed Tom, rushing to his side. “Chat, what have you found?”
Chat’s eyes were riveted on a rounded red container, covered in spots, sitting on the floor of the closet.
“...The answer,” Chat whispered.
~---~
In the center of the room, the Miracle Box sat on Marinette’s desk, where Chat Noir had placed it gingerly. The three of them stared at it, two more in confusion than in wonder.
“...What is this?” Tom asked. “Obviously, you recognize it.”
“I’ve only seen it once,” a hushed Chat answered. “And it shouldn’t be here. There is absolutely no way that it should be here right now.”
“Is it dangerous?” worried Sabine.
“No... it’s not dangerous. Not in and of itself,” Chat remarked. “It might be the answer to our prayers, even... but I... I just... I don’t understand. Why would it be HERE?”
“Can you explain?” Tom wondered aloud, spooked by Chat’s change in demeanor.
“I... I suspected her once. Just for a little while,” Chat said to himself. “But I was so sure that I was wrong. But if this is true... everything makes sense now...”
“For God’s sake, Chat, what does this mean? And what is it?” Sabine shouted, more loudly than she’d meant to. “Can you open it?”
“No, I can’t.”
Chat turned to Marinette’s parents with an odd expression on his face. “But I do know the one thing that can. Claws in!”
A white flash filled Marinette’s bedroom, not for the first time. Those who were present, who stood revealed, and the looks on the faces of Tom and Sabine... those, however, were all firsts.
Plagg blinked a few times, hovering in mid-air by Adrien’s side, then took in the situation with a startled look on his own face. “Uh... hi there,” he blurted out.
“You have got to be kidding me,” Tom gasped.
“...Adrien?” asked Sabine, in a weak voice. “If... you are Chat Noir...”
Adrien nodded, silently.
“Then... is Marinette...?”
Adrien turned to Plagg, with an expression screaming out HOW COULD YOU NOT TELL ME and WHAT THE FLYING HELL and PLEASE HELP ME all at once.
“That’s... what we’re going to find out,” Adrien declared. “Plagg... open the Box. And then we’re going to open as many boxes as are in there.”
“Calling in the cavalry, huh?” Plagg remarked. “Good. Lemme go figure this out.”
He disappeared into the Box, phasing through the top of it.
As Adrien turned to the Dupain-Chengs... the body language of Chat Noir returned, even though his costume hadn’t.
“We’re going to find my Lady,” he told them. “We’re all going to find her.”

The door opened with a slam and closed with a click, Dick peeking over the doorway, his face lightening up upon seeing his children enter the home. However, a frown replaced his smile when he saw Thomas throw his bag to the side, Marie watching her twin brother with a pursed lip and worried eyes.
“-maybe he can help.” Marie whispered, trying to grab Thomas’ hand only to get it slapped away.
“Dad?” Thomas scoffed, dragging his hand down his face before flinging his hand in the direction of the kitchen. “That happy-go-lucky guy? Bet he’s never had to deal with this shit before.”
“It doesn’t hurt to try.” Marie urged, holding Thomas’ hand into her own. “Maybe he can-”
“He won’t and will not. And you better not tell him about any of this.” Thomas gritted, jerking his hand away from Marie, his eyes landing on his father who was now standing at the foyer of the house, a smile plastered on his face.
How long was he there for? How much did he know?
“So, how was school?” Richard asked, leaning on the wall, watching as Marie fidgeted under his watch while Thomas muttered something, averting his attention.
“It was alright.” Thomas started, picking up his school bag and threw it over his shoulder. “Aced my midterms if that helps.” Richard’s smile grew, Thomas wanting to roll his eyes as his father walked over to him and hugged him, ending the interaction by ruffling his midnight hair.
“Definitely wonderful news! Worth celebrating over! Might have to call your mo-”
“He got in a fight.” Marie blurted out, her gaze on the floor, her fists trembling at her side, her name hissed out of her brother.
“A fight?” Richard asked, Thomas rolling his eyes, feeling a bit ashamed when his father’s eyes narrowed. “With who-”
“It’s nothing you should be concerned about,” Thomas said, walking up the stairs to slowly retreat to his room. “No-thing,” Thomas enunciated each syllable.
“Stop lying Thomas,” Marie said, her voice wavering. She looked at her father with bluebell eyes, round and filled to brim with unshed tears. Richard’s heart ached. They looked just like hers. “He got in a fight with-”
“Marie.” Thomas sternly growled, watching his sister tense up. “Not. Now.”
“Thomas, let her-”
“Are you happy that you got Dad’s attention, Marie?” Thomas asked, Richard wondering what exactly was his son feeling. Anger? Annoyance? Jealousy?
“What are you-”
“Aren’t you happy Mar? Happy that Dad loves you sooo much, simply because you’re the better one out of the two of us? The one that never gets in trouble? The goody-two-shoes, just like him? Like her? Like them?”
“What? No!” Marie squeaked, her eyes darting from their father and Thomas. “No, I-”
“Oh stop lying to yourself, Mar.” Thomas walked back down the stairs, his bag abandoned at the top. “You just love the fact that Dad always prefers you over me. After all,” he looked past his father, watching as Marie cowered behind him, “-you look just like her.”
“Thomas.” Richard said sternly, standing in front of Marie, tears falling silently down her face. “That’s enough.”
“What’s enough?” Thomas asked with a dry laugh. “The fact that Marie looks just like Mom? The fact that Marie looks identical to Mom? The fact that you have an identical replica of Mom living with us despite me also being a part of her?” Thomas let out a shuddering sigh. “I bet you’d choose Mom over me if you had the chance, wouldn’t you?”
“Thomas. Take. That. Back.” Richard gritted.
“Why should I when we both know it’s the truth?”
“You’re jumping to conclusions young man.”
“Oh? Am I?” Thomas walked up to his father, the height difference not scaring him one bit. “Then explain why I’m always the outcast.” At that, Richard took a step back, wondering how to answer at the accusation. “Why was I always the one you avoided looking at? Why was I always the one sent to Grandpa Bruce’s manor while Marie got to stay with Grandpere Tom and Grandmere Sabine? Why was I the one who had to suffer through all the gossip behind my back? Why was I-”
“Because you resemble her the most.” Richard softly said, Thomas looking up to his father, wondering when he had curled into himself, why his vision was so blurry. When did he start crying? When did his father start crying? Why was he crying? “Because some days you sounded exactly like her.” Richard brought his son into an embrace, Thomas feeling his father tremble. “Even though you have my shade of blue eyes, you have her midnight hair.”
Thomas felt his chest both tighten up and feel lighter.
“You have her laugh and her voice, her button nose and scrunched up face whenever she ate something sour.” Thomas’ vision blurred again, a lump forming in his throat.
“Your freckles look identical to her’s, you have her smile when you eat your favorite ice cream combo: vanilla and chocolate mint.” Richard let out a wobbly laugh. “Did you know that was her favorite combination to eat?”
Richard separated himself from Thomas, watching Thomas hang his head in shame while also wiping his tears away.
“And despite never meeting her, you have the same habits she had.” Marie walked up to her father and silently cried into his side. He patted her head, pulling Thomas into a hug again, hearing muffled cries. “It’s not that I was avoiding you Thomas, I was just not prepared to face you… to face the reality that your mother will never be able to see how much her children have grown up without her seeing a single bit of it with her own eyes.”
Thomas’ wails broke the silence, Marie shortly joining in, her own sobs syncing with her brother’s, something Richard had yet to completely understand.
Even when they were infants -in the rare times they would cry- whenever one of them would cry, the other would join, their screams syncing into a single wail, sometimes scaring Richard.
It would still be something to get used to.
Richard let his kids cry, knowing it was heavily needed. Talking to Thomas about the fight can wait for another time, his current emotions were more important than some fight from earlier that day.
He knew about Thomas’ constant fights, the academy always calling Richard to try to meet in person to speak about the situation, Richard always turning the appointments down. He already knew about them, he had for a while. He just knew it wasn’t the right time to approach Thomas about the issue.
He wanted to give Thomas the option to approach him, to confide in his father for advice.
Richard knew better than to pry information from people, if living with his adopted siblings taught him anything, it was to never pry. When he had applied pressure, or at least the majority of the time, it’d lead to an unwanted situation.
Their crying carried for minutes, almost an hour until they came to a soft hiccup, Thomas being the one to end the symphony of tears. Making sure that his kids calmed down completely and didn’t have anymore pent up emotions, Richard coaxed them to take a nap as Thomas and Marie ended up exhausting themselves, now drowsy from all the crying.
With great hesitance, the twins finally agreed to take a short nap, Thomas complaining how it would ruin his sleep schedule while Marie was starting to crave cake. Richard told Marie he would make sure a cake was made and finished before dinner while laughing at Thomas’ complaints.
It reminded him of a certain someone.
Tucking Marie into bed and giving her a kiss on her forehead, Richard slipped out of Marie’s room and went to the kitchen to start working on the cake he had promised Mari.
Setting up his work space, he got to baking, placing his glass bowl over a pan of hot water, cracking the eggs over it and placing the sugar and vanilla extract in as well. He began to mix the ingredients, feeling something was off.
“Oh! Don’t forget the honey! You always forget the honey!”
“Right! The honey!”
“And don’t forget to remove it-”
“Remove it when it gets to 40 celcius. And we have to do the same for the butter and milk.”
“Yup! Honestly, why do you keep asking me about the step if you got the majority of it down?
“Just making sure.”
“Once you mix the first bowl you gotta add the cocoa powder.”
“Right, the butter and milk come after that.”
“Yup! So let’s get back to baking!”
“Hope I don’t forget a step along the way.” Richard said to himself, failing to notice the figure that peered from the kitchen doorway, watching Richard talk to himself as he made the batter, placed it in the oven and started to prep for the next step.
“Do you see that Mari? He’s doing just fine. He may still be healing, but he’s okay.”
——
“What’s the cake for? Is it the twin’s birthday already?” A voice asked, making Dick jump, almost misplacing the last strawberry on the cake.
“Kor’i!” He exclaimed with a smile, placing the strawberry down and going up to kiss his wife, having to tip-toe a bit to kiss her cheek. “When did you get back home?”
“When you started baking.” Kor’i giggled upon seeing the blush on Richard’s face. “I didn’t want to bother you so-”
“You could’ve still said hi.”
“You were talking with M.” Kor’i said softly, watching as it dawned on Richard as to what she had meant.
“Oh,” was all he could say, rubbing the back of his neck. “Was I?” Kor’i nodded, noticing the mess on the counter.
“Why don’t I help you clean up? That way you can take a short break before dinner.” Kor’i suggested, Dick nodding, the two cleaning up the mess in sweet silence.
------
The mess was cleaned, dinner ready to be heated and the cake to be eaten, but there was an hour to spare before Kor’i and Dick had to wake up the children, so they settled with sitting on the sectional sofa, Dick being Kori’s pillow as the two watched some drama Kor’i had been watching recently.
While Kor’i was highly immersed into the show, Dick was content in just being there, running his hand through her hair that seemed to flow for miles. Her sunset hair shimmered, before Dick realized it had turned midnight and short.
------
“-hope that- Dick?” Kor’i asked, quickly turning when he had stopped moving. One minute he was stroking her hair, the next he had stopped.
Quickly, Kor’i kneeled beside Dick. “Dick? Dick? Dick, are you alright?”
“Mari. Is Mari okay?” He asked, staring at his hands, Kor’i noticing that tears ran down his face, his eyes had turned glossy.
“Dick... Dick.” Kor’i repeated, placing her hands on his shoulders. “Dick, please, say something.”
“It was all my fault.” Dick whispered, still looking into the distance, watching as Mari’s casket was lowered into the ground. “It was all my fault.”
------
Dick stormed out of the manor, slamming the door behind him, ignoring Alfred’s calls.
This is exactly why he hated Bruce. Why he hated Batman. Why he hated being Robin.
This is why this was going to be his last mission. His last mission... As a vigilante…
He had enough of all of this...he just wanted to have a life next to her.
As he made his way to his girlfriend’s home, ambulances rushed past him, firefighters and police cars following suit… all of them heading for-
“Mari.” With the worst case scenario in his head, Dick broke into a sprint, praying that it was all wrong. That what his gut was telling him was wrong. That Mari was fine. That she is alright.
Please, let her be okay.
------
He couldn’t bear to see her nor to touch her.
“I’m fine Dick.” Marinette softly said, placing her hand over his, drawing circles. “I’m going to be fine.”
“Why?”
“Hmm?”
“Why are you so calm?” Dick grasped the mint green blanket into his hand. “Why aren’t you-”
“Because I was also at fault.”
“He was drunk.”
“But I also was crossing the street when the light was still green.”
“He was going over the speed limit, Marinette.” Dick gritted, getting up quickly, the hair falling down. “Don’t you understand how serious this is?”
“I made it out with a simple scratch.”
“Mari, that’s not a scratch. You could’ve ended up blind and possibly dead if it weren’t for your quick thinking and your phone.”
Marinette pursed her lips at that, balling the blanket under her grip.
She knew Dick was right, but she was grateful for her luck, only having the side of her face swollen and having a cut near her eye.
True, she could’ve died if her phone didn’t take the hit for her leg… but Marinette was just happy to be alive…
Dick watched her avoid him as he took a breath, turning away from her as he collected himself.
Do it for her.
Bruce’s words rang in his head as he prepared himself for the biggest mistake of his life. Hell, the biggest regret of his life.
“I’ve had enough of this.” He said out of nowhere, Marinette wondering where this was coming from.
“Enough of what?”
“Of this!” Dick yelled, motioning at the hospital. “Every single time I come to visit you, I always end up here. Here!”
“Richard, I-”
“The first time I met you, it was my fault you were here. I wasn’t watching where I was driving, but since then?” Dick let out a dry laugh. “You manage to make it about yourself.”
“Richard, I had to-”
“You should’ve let the ball roll off the first time, should’ve let the phone fall into the river the second, should’ve let the letter fly off into the air, let the dog runaway, let that girl-”
“How can you say that I was doing it for attention?” Marinette scowled. “I was helping someone, saving them on that last one.”
“Help to the extent of getting injured? Of dying?” Dick laughed before it came to a halt. “I can’t keep going like this. I rather not be involved with this.”
Marinette’s eyes shrunk, feeling her view become smaller. She could feel her chest tighten, a lump forming in her throat.
Please don’t… don’t say-
“I think it’s better if we go our own ways.”
He did...
Marinette didn’t know when he left, nor did she know when the other doctors came into her room. She only acknowledged them when one of them sat on her bed and held her hand, giving it a squeeze.
It was only then that she noticed that the other two doctors that were in the room avoided looking at her, their mouths in thin lines.
“I’m...I’m pretty sure you didn’t hear us when we came in...we noticed you were dazed off, recovering from today’s accident.” The doctor at her side said, letting out a huff. “We’re here to tell you about your friend, Alya.” Marinette perked at that. “We came to the decision to tell you about your friend now rather than later or through someone else.”
No.
Please… don’t…
She can’t right now… She can’t lose another person… She won’t be able to handle that...
“Wh-What, where is Alya?”
She needed Alya right now...
“I’m sorry, but Mme.Ceshaire… she didn’t make it through the surgery.”
One minute Marinette saw the three doctors in her room… the next, her world had become dark.
------
“She’s awake! Someone! Get the doctor!”
Marinette’s eyes flickered, flinching when her eyes adjusted to the lights.
“I see that you’re doing better, Mme.Dupain-Cheng. And we need you to be doing better, to get better. After all, you have to live on for two now.”
“I, um, I beg your pardon?” Marinette asked, adjusting herself to sit up a bit, watching as the doctor looked at her in astonishment and then gracefully gave her a smile.
“I’m guessing you didn’t know, but that’s quite understandable, seeing as you are only two weeks in.”
“I’m sorry, but I’m still not-”
“You are pregnant Mme.Dupain-Cheng.” Marinette’s heart fell. “Congratulations.”
———
It was finally done.
Fuck Bruce.
He was never going back.
Dick felt like a weight in his shoulders were slightly lifted.
There was no turning back.
As Dick headed for the bakery where he knew Marinette still resided in, his heart came to a halt as his eyes laid on the girl he had left behind.
She had changed. She was a bit more plump, glowing as she sat on the chair outside the bakery. Next to her, a man who he’d only see a few times. Luka, if he remembered correctly.
But that wasn’t what had caused his heart to stop beating. It was her figure that had him to stop breathing. She was pregnant. But now the question that rose: whose was it? Who was the father of the child she was to bare?
It didn’t take long to figure it out because as soon as Dick locked eyes with Luka, he saw red in the other man’s eyes. One minute Dick was looking at an enraged Luka and the next he saw a fist, toppling backwards where his head met the floor.
“How dare you show your face around here after what you’ve done to Marinette!”
“What-” a grunt. “Are you-” a gag as he tasted blood. “Talking about?” But Dick got no response. Luka just keeps punching him, Dick letting him despite his brain telling him to defend himself. But his heart said otherwise. Something told him he deserved it.
“Luka! Stop it! Please!” Marinette’s voice cracked as she pleaded, Luka almost stopping instantly when he heard it.
Dick swore that his heart stopped at how broken it sounded, how tired it had become.
Was it all because of him?
“Mari, I-“
“Come inside.” Marinette said with a weak voice. “I don’t want anyone eavesdropping on our conversation.
-
After getting fixed up, Marinette treating his last bruise, Dick finished what he came to tell her.
The reason he broke up with her and didn’t contact her for months? One word: Kitten.
She had decided to waltz back into his life, but this time being the new Killer Moth, something Bruce and Dick did not expect to hear after hearing of Drury’s death.
While Bruce quickly adjusted to the new villain, Dick couldn’t. Because he knew what this meant.
She wanted him -hence her return- and this time, she came prepared.
She had more things to hold hostage against Dick - Gotham, Batman, Robin...and Marinette.
He needed to act quick, hasty decisions that led to successfully taking Kitten down.
However, they also led to regrets.
He watched as Marinette dropped the bag of frozen peas, her eyes filling up with tears.
“All of that, for a mission?”
“I know. It was stupid-“
“Stupid barely just scratches the surface.” She started, letting out a dry laugh. “It was downright idiotic!” Holding her hand to her head, she walked in a complete circle before facing him again. “Why didn’t you just tell me? Why? Didn’t you trust me?”
“I do! I still do.”
“Sure didn’t seem like it.” Marinette scoffed. “Because if you did, you would’ve told me.”
“I could’ve never returned to you had the mission gone wrong.” Dick defended, attempting to reach out to her, only for Mari to catch his hand and shake her head.
“I would’ve understood. I know the sacrifices a person must make to keep their loved ones protected.” She reminded him, Dick fully knowing she was referring to her days of being Ladybug.
“Kitten-” Dick started, only to get cut off.
“Kitten would’ve faced my wrath if you didn’t come back to me.” Marinette said, then remembering about that clingy girl he once spoke of. “I would’ve done something to bring you back home.”
“I know. And that’s what I also feared.”
“Hmm?”
“I feared that if it did go wrong and you had to do something to get me back, and something happened to you as well...what does that say about me? Am I too weak to protect you? That I’m still not ready to have my own life and protect it?”
“What’s wrong in relying on others?”
“It often means bringing in more people for others to hold hostage.”
“Is that what your father taught you?” Marinette asked coldly, glaring at the bruise on Dick’s face. “Is that what you learned from fighting alongside Batman? Red Robin? Robin? Because if anything, they prove otherwise.”
“I just don’t-”
“Sometimes, you have to rely on others, lean on their shoulders.” Marinette reminded, cupping Richard’s face, gently pressing her forehead against his. “Just hide away your fears and ask for help. Talk to someone, just like you are with me.”
Dick didn’t know when he had placed his hands over hers nor when he got up to embrace her. He just knew that whatever stood between them no longer stood there.
That she somehow washed away his fears.
“Thank you, Mari.”
“That doesn’t mean I’ve forgiven you for doing that stunt on me.” Marinette said against his ear, a chill running down his spine.
“R-right.”
------
The next months were spent with Dick picking up the responsibility he had never picked up.
He helped Marinette with her modeling, helped her deal with her clients, always at her beck and call each day.
He did the cleaning, the laundry and the cooking, not once letting Marinette lift a finger.
Despite each day spent like an errand boy, Dick cherished each moment.
Their morning greetings (which was a boop on the nose), their lunch dates, Dick watching Marinette hum and caress her stomach whenever she took a break, being by Mari’s side whenever she felt irritated, and the list went on.
Those days became weeks, which in turn, became months.
He didn’t remember when he had the guts to ask her to marry him, crying when she said yes.
The two moved into their own apartment - big enough for them and their bundle of joy.
———
With each passing day, he longed for the moment he’d be able to meet their child, Dick often being the one to bring out lists of names to choose from.
They’d talk about the nursery as they watched the city lights beam across their ceiling at night.
They’d talk about the cribs and the onesies they have to buy. Which brand to choose and the stuffed animals to buy.
As he’d run his hand through her midnight locks, they would speak of what family activities to do.
Introduce them to Disney, take them to the beach, the amusement park. To Paris!
They’d let their fantasies run wild, fully knowing that money was the least of their problem.
They just wanted the best for their child.
Their future.
———
And in the blink of an eye, they were there.
———
“He’s so tiny.” Richard cooed, cradling his son in his arms, watching the tiny infant squirm in his blanket. He had a tuft of navy hair, a few strands seeping from his tiny hat.
It was still pretty early in the morning, the delivery being five in the morning and yet Richard still had energy to spare. Or maybe he knew it wasn’t fair to his wife who worked so hard to bring their bundle of joy to their lives.
“He is, meaning that there’s still space to carry another one.” Marinette hummed, Richard tilting his head.
“Another...one?” Marinette giggled as she watched the nurse roll in another makeshift crib into the room, watching as tears rolled down Richard’s face. “Mari… why didn’t you-”
“I made sure to keep it a secret.” Marinette watched as the nurse helped Richard balance the two children into his arms, ingraining the memory. “Only my parents knew about them. Oh! And Alfred too!”
“She’s adorable,” was all Richard could whisper out as he looked at their children in his arms.
“Thomas. Marie.” Marinette said, reaching out for her children, the nurse quickly going to Richard to get Thomas and then Marie. Richard wanted to pout upon having his children taken from him but he didn’t care.
His heart melted as he watched the two infants snuggle closer to their mother, tiny smiles on their wrinkly faces.
“I’ll always be watching over you. Always.” Marinette softly spoke, her smile getting bigger before it quivered. “I’m sorry.”
What was she talking about? Sorry? About what?
“Richard.” Marinette spoke, even quieter this time, Dick noticing that her hold on the children was loosening, probably because she was tired. Without another word, he scooped the children into his arm, watching Marinette look at him with soft eyes. “Come closer.”
He did.
He watched as Marinette slowly lifted her hand to his cheek, caressing it as she smiled, unshed tears pooling in her eyes.
“You know I’ve always loved you and I always will.”
“You tell me everyday my love.” Dick assured, leaning into her cold touch. “I love you too.”
“Please.” Marinette pleaded, a tear sliding down her pale face, her lips giving him a frail smile. “Promise me that you’ll take care of them.”
“Of course I will.” RIchard smiled, wanting to caress her cheek as well, instead, he settled for a forehead press. She was kinda cold. “I’ll take care of them alongside you.” Marinette shook her head.
“Only you will be able to take care of... them.” Marinette said, her voice cracking towards the end. “I’m sorry.” She whispered out, Richard finally piecing together her words.
“Mari. Mari, no. You...you can’t.” Richard set the children down into their respective cribs, hearing her monitor start to beep in alarm. “Mari, Mari! Mari please! Someone!”
He started to shout outside the door, shouting for someone to come and help him.
He shouted desperately, watching as no one came, the crying of his two children being his only solace.
She died with a smile on her face.
———
“It was all my fault! I should’ve never left her alone! I should've told her about the mission instead of leaving her out of the loop! If I had simply-“
“Dick, you didn’t know.” Kor’i softly said, never noticing when the twins had gotten to the living room, watching as their father broke down. “None of us knew, but her.”
“Mari, is Mari okay? Tell me Kor’i! Is Marinette going to be alright?” Dick asked, clinging onto Kor’i.
This...this was the first time the twins had ever heard their mother’s name out of their father’s mouth. It was always ‘Mom,’ ‘Mother,’ Nettie’. It was never Marinette.
“Richard. She’s alright.” Kor’i hushed, watching as Dick let out shuddering breaths. “The children are okay as well.”
Thomas and Marie watched as their father visibly calmed down, watching Kor’i give him a soft smile.
“So she’s okay? She’s not…” he trailed off, looking at Kor’i with glossy eyes. When he saw Kor’i nod, let out a sigh before he collapsed to his side, the cushions allowing him to drift off to sleep.
Thomas and Marie attempted to go over to their father, but didn’t when Kor’i prevented them from getting any closer.
“Does...does- is this new?” Marie asked, watching her father in deep sleep, tears staining the pillow underneath him. “Was this-“
“He doesn’t have them that often anymore, they used to be much worse. And as much as I want to say no, I can’t do that. So yes, perhaps the sudden situation that caused him to confess his feelings may have triggered this one.” Kor’i responded despite not wanting to confirm Marie’s suspicions.
“Will he be alright?” Thomas then asked, holding onto Marie’s hand that trembled in guilt.
“He’s going to be alright. I assure you that much.” Thomas and Marie watched as Kor’i draped a blanket over him, wondering what awaited them.
The two walked out the living room, walking into the kitchen, a sob escaping Marie.
“Come on Marie. You can’t just-“
“What if it’s our fault Mom isn’t here?” Marie cut her brother off. “What if we’re the reason-“ She flinched when Thomas slammed his hands on the kitchen counter.
“Don’t you dare say that!” Thomas grabs her by the shoulders, shaking her a bit. “Don’t you dare mock Mom’s feelings like that! If we’re here while she isn’t, then she wanted us to live! And because we’re living, we can’t just just take her decision for granted!”
“I know, but-“ Marie bit her lip. “How did we just believe Dad wasn’t still suffering from her death? Why didn’t we notice it? Why didn’t he say anything? We’re his children. He should’ve said something. We could’ve helped.”
Thomas frowned, watching as his sister silently cried.
He hated to say this, but she was right.
He could’ve told them what he was going through. He could’ve leaned on them… then again, who was he to judge him for that?
He never spoke of his fights with his father, so what right did he have for demanding him to tell them about his problems?
Now that he thought about, why did he never speak of the fights?
Was it his shame? His guilt?
No.
Thomas knew why he never spoke of the fights.
It was his pride.
They called him motherless, a bastard when they saw him argue with his father once and when they learned that Kor’i was his father’s ‘current’ wife was someone from Tamaran, they called him a Torq.
Torq.
Insignificant. A nobody. That nothing good would ever come from a motherless rebel like him.
Thomas hit the side of his fist against the wall, a book hitting his head and falling to the floor.
Why did he choose the side of the kitchen where all the cookbooks were at?
Rubbing his aching bruise, Thomas went to pick it up, eyes widening when he saw the name on the opened front page.
“Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
Marie rushes over the moment she hears the name, slightly pushing her brother to get a better view of the book.
They flipped the page, confused to see writing on it.
“They’re recipes.” Marie pointed out, looking at the fruit tart recipe on the page they were currently looking at.
“Mom wrote all of these.” Thomas stated the obvious, running his hand across the neatly written instructions. The regular instructions were in black, side notes and suggestions in red and pink respectively.
He also couldn’t help but notice a ladybug theme on the book.
Did she like ladybugs?
“In case Dick has another nightmare or breakdown.” Marie read out loud, Thomas looking to where he was reading.
“An herbal tea?”
“Do you think...it will work?”
“We can give it a try.”
“Let’s do it then!” Marie said with a smile. “Let’s make Dad feel better!”
I know you two can do it! Good luck!
———
“It happened again, didn’t it?” Dick asked, looking down at his trembling hands.
It wasn’t even a complete ten minutes before he woke up. His body was sore and his throat parched. Another one, huh? “And I’m front of-“
“They were going to find out eventually.” Kor’i said softly, amazed that it took 16 whole years for them to find out. While babies didn’t fully understand breakdowns, they can absolutely feel them. “And what better time than now.”
“But they shouldn’t have to deal with-“
“They are not dealing with anything. Instead, they are learning more about you. Getting to finally know about their father.”
“Their pathetic poor-excuse-of-a-father.” Dick huffed, placing his head into his hands. “Can’t even get over-“
“Don’t. Don’t you dare finish that sentence.” Kor’i gritted, cupping Dick’s face to make him look at her. “Don’t you dare say that death should be easy to get over. Because it’s not. And never will. Only time can heal it. And we both know that.”
“All too well.” Dick added, placing his head on her shoulder. “Sorry for saying that.”
“It’s alright.”
“Dad.” “Dad.” They heard their kids say simultaneously, noticing that Thomas had a tray in his hand.
“What’s that you got there?” Dick attempted to say with a chirp, causing everyone to resist showing a frown.
“It’s a tea recipe we found.” Thomas started.
“We decided to make it after finding it in Mom’s recipe book.”
They watched as their father’s eyes grew large.
“Mari’s...cookbook. It thought it was lost in the move from long ago.” Dick whispered as he took the cup of tea, the aroma of ginger and cinnamon bringing back old memories. “It smells just like the tea she used to make.”
Marie and Thomas watched as their father took a sip from it, wondering if it tastes the same as Mom’s.
“Does...does it taste...good?” Marie asked after a long moment of awkward silence.
“It almost tastes exactly like hers. Of course, there’s still something missing-“ Marie’s hiccups, Dick quickly getting up to console her, setting down his cup. “Mari, the tea-“
“I’m glad you liked it. I thought you wouldn’t.” Marie sobbed, wiping away her tears. “We tried to figure out what the last ingredient was but after testing out different things, nothing seemed to be it.”
“Whatever Mom meant by ‘tears of true love,’ we weren’t able to crack it.” Thomas clarifies, placing the empty tray onto the coffee table. “But I guess it was still a success if you said it tastes similar to Mom’s.”
Dick smiled, pulling Thomas close to him.
“Seems like the two of you have your mother’s gift of creation.” Dick felt Kor’i join in on the hug. “She’d be really proud of the two of you. Without a doubt.”
He wiped away a tear that dared to slip, flicking it away.
He never realized the soft pink glow that emitted from the tea when the tear flew into it.
The tear of true love...in the shape of a healing family.

A Soulmate for Christmas - 4
< Previous
Marinette rushed through the hallways to the kitchen. She’d been absent for far too long. Hopefully, Maman hadn’t sent out a search party to find her yet. Sometimes, she worried too much.
Not this time, apparently. When Marinette finally returned to the kitchen, Sabine was giving her work to another server with a smile on her face. "Take these next, dear.”
"Oh. Coconut. I love those. May I steal one?"
Marinette froze. That... was not a server.
Adrien gave her mother the most killer set of puppy eyes she’d ever seen, picking the tray up. His jacket was gone, leaving him sporting only a shirt and a vest, just like all the other male servers at the party. Only his were of much better quality.
Sabine offered him a macaroon from her board. "Take this one and leave the arranged ones for the guests." Her gaze finally caught Marinette. "Sweetheart. There you are. I was starting to worry."
"I got caught up with something. I’m sorry, Maman. I’ll get right to it." Marinette walked closer, looking at Adrien. "What are you doing here?"
"Helping." He shoved the macaron into his mouth and chewed. "Your mother was looking for you, and since I’m pretty sure it’s my fault you were missing, I thought it was only fair for me to help out."
"Thanks, but I’m here now. You can go."
"As you wish." The tray in his hands, Adrien turned to the exit and was gone before Marinette could object.
“Such a nice young man,” Sabine said as soon as they were left alone. “We’d better think about how we can thank him. He’s been helping me for the last fifteen minutes. Can you imagine? Just walked in, asked about you, and offered to help. I’ll leave him some macarons. He seems to have a sweet tooth. Speaking of which… I think the next batch is done. Where did I put those oven mittens?"
Marinette nibbled on her lip. How much had he said? Maman knew about her soulmate, but she didn’t seem to realize that he was Adrien. How did she even not recognize he was Adrien Agreste, the boy whose photos had been plastered all over Marinette’s room for ages?
"Did… he tell you anything about himself?"
"Just that he’s your friend,” Sabine answered, taking the pastries out of the oven. “Why? Is there anything—"
A loud thud echoed through the room as the baking sheet her mother was just taking out hit the ground. Sabine pushed the young girl who was working beside her away from a pot of hot, steaming liquid that was falling sideways. The girl stumbled backwards and fell to the ground. Sabine wasn't as fortunate. She tried to dodge but was a moment too late as the boiling liquid splashed all over her hands, scalding the skin.
"Maman!" Marinette rushed to the woman.
“I’m so sorry,” the girl almost cried from the side. “I didn’t mean to… I don't know how it slipped. I—”
Marinette didn't listen, rushing her mother to the nearest sink. She turned the tap on, made sure the water was cool, and put Sabine’s reddening hands under the stream. Her mother sighed with relief. The girl she saved quickly got to cleaning as she continued to apologize. Sabine tried to play it down, insisting it wasn’t a big deal and she would be back to working in no time. Yet a few minutes later, her skin started to blister.
“You’re going home, Maman. This needs to be treated.”
“Marinette, I can’t,” Sabine spoke quietly. “We have a contract to honour…"
"I’ll deal with it. You’re going home. You can’t work like that."
"But—"
"No objections. I’m calling someone right now to take you home. I’ll finish this on my own."
"What happened?" Adrien materialized by her side. One look at her mother’s hands and he was pulling out his cellphone. “My driver can take her straight to a hospital.”
Sabine tried to protest but neither of them listened.
“It doesn't look that bad, but maybe you’re right. Taking extra precaution wouldn't hurt.”
“It never does. I'll tell him to stay with her and drive her home after. If she needs any prescriptions, he’ll take care of that too.”
And there he was. That caring man Kagami and Chloe had told her about was shining through, not hesitating to help others, even if that meant sacrificing his own comfort for those who needed help.
“Okay.” He put his device away. “Gorilla will be by the rear entrance in a few minutes. Let’s wrap her hands and get her there.”
Before Marinette could concentrate on what to do, Adrien found a pair of clean kitchen towels and soaked them in cool water. They wrapped them around Sabine’s hands and headed to the appointed place. Five minutes later, the largest man Marinette had ever seen was driving her mother away.
“She’ll be fine,” Adrien spoke, standing right behind her. “Gorilla will keep us updated on what's happening.”
She couldn't even raise her eyes to look at him. How could he be so kind to her after the way she treated him just now? Marinette clutched her hands together, whispering instead, “Thank you.”
"No worries,” Adrien replied, hesitantly reaching for her shoulder. A few gentle pats for reassurance, and he withdrew. “I believe we have a job to do. Shall we get to it, my Lady? I’m almost out of macarons to serve.”
She turned around, arching her eyebrow. Not that she didn't like the nickname, but they haven't even talked yet. When did she become his Lady? What was up with that cocky, smouldering look on his face, and why were there crumbs all over his vest?
"You’d have macarons to serve if you stopped eating them." She pointed to the evidence.
"But they are delicious."
"They are for guests."
"And I am one."
"Then why are you here, parading as help?"
He leaned closer, their noses almost touching as he grinned. "Because my Lady needs help, and as her cat, I cannot refuse."
That arrogant smirk! She both loved and hated it. Wanted to smack him and kiss those lips of his. He was so much nicer in her imagination. His friends described him as a saint. Not this annoying, cocky dork!
"Don’t get in my way, or you’re out." She turned around and stomped to their bakery station in the kitchen. There was too much work still to do. Marinette wasn’t even sure where to start. Thankfully, the girl had cleaned the mess. Perhaps, Marinette should start with seeing what ingredients they still have to figure out what to make. Wasn't there a list Maman made? Where did it go?
A pair of arms wrapped around her from behind. Adrien leaned down and whispered in her ear, "Close your eyes."
"I don’t have time for this."
"I know, but trust me. Close your eyes. Please."
She grumbled but obliged him. The quicker she did whatever it was he wanted, the faster she could continue. If only his touch and closeness didn’t send her heart into overdrive…
"Now, breathe in. Deep and slow."
She did, oxygen filling every part of her lungs.
"Breathe out. Slowly."
She let it all out and followed Adrien’s instructions a few more times until he tenderly kissed the crown of her head. "Now, let’s do this. You bake and assemble. I serve. And afterwards, perhaps, you’ll give me a chance to explain everything."
She opened her eyes, exhaustion and the chaos in her mind somewhat subdued. "You don’t give up, do you?"
"I’ve waited for far too many years to let a simple misunderstanding stand in my way."
***
"I think this is the last of it," Marinette stuffed the last few mixing bowls in the trunk of her car. "Thank you… for everything. I know it’s cliché, but I couldn’t have done this without you."
"Perhaps, you’ll let me explain the situation as a reward for all my hard work?"
His cellphone rang. Adrien glanced at the screen and refused the call. "It’s Chloe. I’ll call her back. So, my reward?"
His phone rang again, Adrien refused the call once more and looked at Marinette. "Please? It won’t take long."
"Your friends—"
The pestering sound split the space between them for the third time.
Marinette smiled at him."Take it."
"I don’t want—"
"I’ll wait. I promise. Take it."
He pressed the button and put the speaker on, the familiar voice of Chloe Bourgeois filling the space. "Adrinkins, you’d better have a good explanation for hanging up on me."
"I'm kind of in the middle of something right now," Adrien said. "Do you mind if I call you back in a bit?"
"Okay, fine. But just so you know, while you were prowling about, we put on a show, and Gami’s living with me now."
"I’ve been officially disowned," Kagami deadpanned. "You may congratulate me now."
"Welcome to the club?" Adrien chuckled. "I was hoping she would be more reasonable."
"She’ll come around eventually… maybe," Kagami said. "She thinks it’s one of those childish desires of mine, and I’ll come to my senses soon enough."
"But you two are soulmates? You have the marks to prove it."
"Soulmate marks or not, I’m not what Tomoe Tsurugi considers ‘best’ for their family," Chloe answered. "And I’m sure I don’t have to explain that woman’s obsession with ‘sacrificing in the family’s name’ to you. Oh! Before I forget. You were adorable as a waiter, Adrinkins. I’ve snapped a few pictures. Will post to our group chat later."
"Sure. Is that all? Can I go now?"
"Tell him about Marinette," Kagami whispered. "About our conversation."
"Oh, right," Chloe grumbled. "We told your lady-love everything. About Kagami and you and me and all the fake-ness of your engagement and non-existence of your dating life. If she knows what’s good for her, you should be good."
Adrien’s eyes locked on Marinette. "You told her everything?"
"We spared her the sappy stories of you being depressed for months at a time over the whole ‘can’t find my soulmate’ thing," Kagami replied.
“The constant, crying phone calls,” Chloe added. “The ice cream we had to bring over to our ‘Find the Ladybug’ brainstorming sessions.”
“All the pep talks we’ve given you,” Kagami finished. “And the few private detectives you hired to find her. Otherwise, you have no secrets from her now."
"You’re welcome, Adrinkins! Now, go. Adios. Call us when you get a date. We’ll celebrate."
"I will." Adrien ended the call. A blush raged across his cheeks as he lifted his eyes to Marinette. "So, uh... that’s why you didn’t kick my ass out of the kitchen?"
"You have good friends." Marinette smiled. "They care about you a lot."
"Does that mean I’m forgiven?"
She nodded. "Only if you forgive me for freaking out on you."
He grabbed her hand, bringing it to the lovesick grin on his lips. "I never held that against you. You had all the rights in the universe to be pissed at me."
His lips brushed against her hand, the mark of a black cat lighting up the space around them. "I know we haven't known each other for that long, but we aren't soulmates for nothing. I really like you. You're driven and passionate. Kind and creative. You value family and are an amazing cook. Perhaps fate knew a thing or two when it paired us together. I’d really love a chance to get to know you better, Marinette."
His eyes sparkled with hope, a slight undercurrent of worry lurking beneath. Marinette couldn’t refuse him even if she wanted to. He really did seem like a great guy. "I’d like that too. You aren’t so bad yourself. Not perfect, but decent enough."
It was a total lie because who was she kidding? He was perfect! Didn’t mean she wanted to feed that already inflated ego of his.
"Really?" He leaned forward. "So, all my fame, looks, and money don’t make me perfect in your eyes?"
Marinette huffed, pulling her hand away just so she could push his way-too-close face away with her finger. "Not even close,” she teased, tapping his nose. “You’re standing here only because of what your friends told me."
"Share. What did they say about me?"
She let out a giggle. "Nothing too horrible."
"Well, now, you’re scaring me. Did they tell you about my feather allergies?"
"Nope, but you just did."
"Lactose intolerance?"
She chuckled. "Wrong again."
"Social inadequacy?"
Marinette couldn’t hold back a laugh.
"I'm low-key freaking out. What did those two say?"
She took a moment to calm down before replying. "They told me about your big, kind heart, one that doesn't think twice about sacrificing its own desires and comfort for the sake of others. I saw it for myself today when you helped my mother. That’s precious and rare. I like that."
He looked at her in awe for a moment before blurting out, "Can I kiss you right now, or do I have to wait until our first official date?"
Marinette laughed again. "You should’ve just gone for it. Now, the moment’s ruined."
"Ugh, bummer." Adrien mockingly pouted. "Then, tell me, what are you doing for Christmas this year?"
"Nursing my parents back to health."
"Would you mind some company?"
"Don’t you have your family to spend Christmas with?"
He shrugged. "Not really. My father has become a Grinch since… well, since Mom passed away. And I’m sure Chloe and Kagami wouldn’t mind if their third wheel would finally leave them alone."
"They did mention you aren’t on the best terms with your father."
Adrien sighed, leaning on her car. "We aren’t officially feuding or anything. It’s just that… when Mom passed away, Father became very controlling and demanding, stripped me of all freedom, and loaded me with work. I was just a kid; I couldn’t do much about it. Two years ago, I got access to the fund my mom left me, so I moved out. I still work for him, but at least he doesn’t control my every move anymore."
"It doesn’t sound like you’re much of a family, to be honest."
His smile was bittersweet. "Not that I wanted it to be this way. It’s… complicated."
Perhaps she was naive, but Marinette couldn’t imagine having a living father and wanting nothing to do with him. "Do you think you'd want to reconnect with him someday?"
Adrien shrugged. "Not sure anymore. He used to be a great dad when I was little. The three of us had so much fun together…" A smile briefly touched his lips as Adrien paused for a moment. "I always thought if I behaved and did everything he wanted, he’d snap out of whatever it is that made him so cold but… it never happened. With time, I just gave up on even trying." Turning her way, he reached for her hand, gently cradling it in his. "I’d rather spend my time and energy on someone who wants to get to know me as much as I want to get to know them. Like you, for example. Perhaps tomorrow? Helping you nurse your parents back to health?"
Her heart skipped a bit, and he hadn’t even done anything more than look at her and hold her hand. “Okay.”
He brought her hand to his lips again, enjoying the view of a glowing cat on her skin. "I’ll have to give you a Christmas gift later, though. Pretty sure I won’t be able to find anything at such late notice."
"Don't worry about it. I already got everything I ever wanted."
The chime of the clock thundered through the night air, announcing midnight. Adrien looked its way, murmuring something about turning back into a pumpkin. Marinette wasn’t sure why, but she reached forward, hesitantly laying her hand on his chest. The mark underneath his shirt glowed, its light reflecting in his eyes as he looked back at her with the gentlest of gazes. She couldn’t take her eyes away even if she wanted to because the man before her was a far cry from what she’d ever imagined him to be. She was a goner already, and she didn’t care. The feeling in her chest was just too pleasant. Warm. Fuzzy. Addicting. Something stronger and deeper than anything she’d ever experienced. Something much more beautiful and meaningful than a teenage crush.
She couldn’t help herself. Marinette stood on her tiptoes and pulled Adrien down for a tender brush of her lips against his cheek.
He looked at her with wide-opened eyes and a deep blush spreading across his face. "I…um… I didn’t… expect that."
"Is that okay?"
He feverishly nodded. "Yes! More than okay. A lot more okay than all the okays in the world. May I… may I return the gesture?"
"Please.”
He leaned down, aiming for her cheek. Somehow he missed, his lips landing on hers. Neither of them seemed to mind, treating each other to the sweetest kiss one could imagine. Pulling back slightly, Adrien rested his forehead against hers, his eyes locked on hers.
"A soulmate for Christmas. Best present ever."
If Marinette’s heart wasn’t in overdrive before, it sure was now. She couldn’t help but agree with his sentiment. "Merry Christmas, Adrien."
"Merry Christmas, my Lady."

Breaking Down Part 4
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5
Marinette woke up feeling miserable. She barely had the energy to blink open her heavy eyes, let alone begin the day. She wanted to get up, do something productive. She hadn't even done any of her homework last night. Marinette knew she should get it done, it was due by lunch and worth ten percent her mark, but Marinette couldn't muster the energy to move. Instead she huddled underneath the blankets, a soft breeze giving her chills.
Her shivering woke up Tikki, who inched towards her face. "Good morning Tikki," Marinette whispered hoarsely, her throat dry.
"Marinette you don't look so good! Are you feeling alright? Are you sick?"
Marinette fell from her side onto her back and stared up at the ceiling. "I'm fine Tikki." Her voice came out just a little stronger. The little kwami looked worried sick. Seeing Tikki's such obvious care, Marinette felt a small smile appear on her face. She stroked Tikki's head with her finger, as Tikki nuzzled up to her.
"You're too good to me Tikki."
Tikki's big blue eyes blinked up at her sorrowfully. "You didn't even have any dinner last night. Please get up and get something to eat. For me?"
The memory of last night washed over Marinette filling her with dread. Lila, the argument with her Maman, falling asleep crying...no dinner meant that her mother wasn't going to listen to a word Marinette had to say. And this time, she couldn't count on her father to support her.
"Marinette?" She forced herself to push away her covers and sat up. Tikki looked rather alarmed. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing new Tikki, I just remembered what happened yesterday." Marinette's eyes began to fill once again with tears.
Tikki panicked. "No Marinette! It's okay. I think your mom must've forgotten, she can't stay mad at you for too long. She never has! Cheer up!"
Marinette looked at Tikki. The little red kwami was practically buzzing in the air as she tried to cheer Marinette up. Marinette knew that Tikki wasn't entirely correct, but her words were inspiring hope.
It was Maman after all. They had a bond of love that no liar could ever break! Marinette brushed away her tears as she felt a little hope creep into her heart. She got out of bed, heading for the bathroom.
"I'm going to get ready. I'll be out soon!"
"Okay," Tikki responded, clearly happy that Marinette was feeling better. She beamed, Tikki was the best kwami she could've ever asked for.
Unbeknownst to Marinette, Tikki was watching the little purple-black butterfly fly away, unable to akumatize its target. Tikki narrowed her eyes at it. "You'll never get Marinette. Never," she vowed solemnly.
xXxXxXxXxX
Marinette headed downstairs, ready to get to class. She'd come home for lunch, that way she wouldn't be at school to hear whatever lies Lila came up with. Then she wouldn't feel the need to correct her.
Marinette hadn't given up. Far from it, but she could accept that simply saying that Lila was lying wasn't good enough. And for the adults, it didn't matter Lila was lying, because she had another lie which covered all of her previous lies!
Even thinking about the situation made Marinette's head spin. No, Marinette needed to come up with a plan that would expose Lila once and for all. Coming up with the plan was the hard part though, one that even summoning a Lucky Charm might not help her with.
"Marinette."
She turned to see her parents standing, waiting for her. Sabine motioned towards the living room. They all went inside and sat down on the couch together. Marinette held her breath, ready to hear what her parents had to say. The hope Tikki had inspired grew further. Perhaps her parents would finally listen to her.
"Marinette," her mother began, looking more serious than ever. "I may have reacted a little rashly yesterday and I would like to apologize." A small smile tugged at the corner of Marinette's mouth. So far, it seemed as though Tikki was right.
"We understand how you feel," Her papa smiled at her gently. Her parents had thought about it and were realizing she was right. Marinette finally felt the tension leave her body.
Her parents actually understood. She felt a smile appear on her face. It seemed she rejoiced too soon however, when her mother spoke again and brought her world crashing down.
"Which is why we need you to apologize to Lila."
Marinette stared blankly, unable to comprehend those words.
"Why?" She finally asked, completely stumped.
"Marinette, honey," her mother began, "we understand that Lila is lying. But Lila is suffering from a disease she can't control. You pointing it out is just hurting her. We have to be considerate of her feelings."
"So it's fine for Lila to get everyone's hopes up that she could introduce them to celebrities when she can't do anything?"
"That's up to the teachers and the other kids' parents to tell them," her father interjected.
Marinette couldn't believe her ears. Her parents, who had always taught her to be righteous and courageous were now telling her to keep her head down and let others get hurt. When they too were falling for Lila's lies.
"I understand," she said flatly standing up.
"Marinette," her father began but she shook her head.
"I'm getting late for school. I'll see you later," she grabbed her stuff, a croissant from the kitchen and ran out the door.
"Marinette," Tikki peered out of the purse looking worried. Marinette tightly shook her head, doing her best to speak. She took in a deep breath, "I'm alright Tikki."
Tikki looked like she wanted to keep talking but Marinette forced a smile on her face. "I'm fine. Don't want to be late do we?"
She walked towards school, but her spirits kept sinking. Then she paused, hearing a strange voice. She turned around to see Adrien waving at her from his car. She stopped as he got off and ran towards her.
"Hey, are you okay?" He asked once he waved his bodyguard off. Strangely it seemed as if Adrien wasn't quite looking at her. Marinette frowned. "Adrien?" He snapped to attention though he kept glancing over her shoulder for some reason.
"Yeah?" She shook her head fondly. "I'm fine." Her mouth twisted. "I have to apologize to Lila though."
"Apologize? For what?" Adrien sounded outraged. His anger made Marinette feel a lot better.
"For antagonizing the poor girl who can't help but lie. It's such a dreadful disease," she told him sarcastically. "My parents said so."
Adrien looked at her sadly. "I'm sorry Marinette. I thought it was the best way to get her to end your expulsion but…" he trailed off but it was Marinette's turn to frown.
"End my expulsion? What are you talking about?"
Adrien looked at her a little guiltily but when she glared he gave in and told her everything. Marinette gasped at hearing the truth and felt her heart swell with happiness. Marinette had thought he had just spoken up for her, not that he'd given up his time to help her out. She grinned at him. "Thank you! You're a really good friend!" He finally stopped glancing around and beamed under the warm glow of her praise as they began to walk in together.
Marinette was so distracted talking to Adrien, she never felt Tikki leave.
Now that I’m done with this chapter the rest will come soon! Marinette made me too sad to continue faster, so sorry for the delay. Spoiler: Next part has Lila and the kwamis, so we are getting there. If anyone wants to be added/removed from tag list let me know. Sorry if you asked and I missed you!

Summary:
Getting stranded on a desert planet isn’t ideal when your partner has fur.
...
It was kriffing hot.
The thought repeated itself in Kallus' head for the millionth time. The former agent growled to himself as he stared into the endless golden landscape.
He sighed and looked over at the unconscious Lasat next to him. The rapid and shallow breathing Zeb produced made Kallus' insides twist horribly. The former agent leaned over to grab his jacket and fanned at the Lasat's sweltering body.
Still no change, Kallus frowned. It's still so kriffing hot. He groaned as he removed his shirt and thought back to the day's events.
…
Crashing onto the desert planet was part of an unfortunate and unforeseen plan that neither Zeb or he had. It just so happened that the escape pod they took had lost control after a TIE-fighter got a lucky shot in. The pod had spun into the range of the nearby planet and was forcibly dragged into its gravity.
Thankfully neither of them had gotten heavily injured in the crash, escaping with only minor scrapes and bruises. The pod was unsalvageable, however, exploding seconds after the pair managed to get out of the craft.
After gathering their bearings, the first thing they immediately noticed was how uninhabitable the place was. Sand covered the land as far as their eyes could see and no other lifeforms were visible.
The next thing they noticed was the high temperature. They both groaned as they began to remove the unneeded layers of clothing to fend off the heat.
Kallus removed his jacket, tying it around his waist to keep his hands free to adjust the frequency on their transponder. "Must we always get stranded together somewhere?"
Zeb zipped opened his jumpsuit and rolled it down to his waist. The Lasat grinned, "Kal, if this keeps up," a sparkle in his eyes illuminated his excitement despite their predicament, "maybe we'll get a beach planet next time!"
The ex-agent rolled his eyes, "I don't want to get stuck anywhere, Zeb."
He covered his face with one hand as he tried to stop a smile, "But… I wouldn't mind a beach planet."
Zeb hugged Kallus, "Aw, ya love me."
The ex-agent almost let out an undignified yelp as he felt warm and damp fur press against him. "Zeb! Let go of me!"
Lasats ran warmer than humans– that was a fact that Kallus quickly learned during his experience on Bahryn. Zeb's fur had kept the Lasat relatively warm on the ice moon. And while Yavin IV was a sweltering jungle planet, there was at least water and the air conditioning to ease off the heat.
Unfortunately this small planet had neither of those and Kallus wasn't planning on testing Zeb's limits.
Once the Lasat reluctantly released the former agent, they searched around for any cover from the sun. Kallus pointed off into the distance, "Those large rocks should provide shade." They were too far in the ex-agent's opinion, but it was the only choice they had.
Zeb squinted and faintly nodded, "Y-yeah. Okay." He gave a wavering smile, "Let's go."
They trekked through the sand, stumbling through giant sand dunes under the merciless sun. Kallus worriedly glanced over to his partner periodically as he worked on the transponder.
Sweat glistened from Zeb's body and harsh heavy pants filled the ex-agent's ears. He paused his work and untied the jacket from his waist, offering it to his partner. Zeb automatically took the material in his hands. He stared at the jacket for a few seconds before he gave Kallus a confused look.
The former agent stifled a laugh, "Hold it over your head, so you're covering yourself from the sun."
"Oh."
An ear twitched, "What about you?"
"I'll be fine, Zeb. We shouldn't be long before we make it to the large rocks," Kallus then shifted, somehow turning redder despite his already flushed skin. He avoided Zeb's gaze, "And I'm worried about you since you're one with a body full of fur."
Said fur ruffled as Kallus' concern made Zeb's heart fluttered. He tried to hide it with a good-natured grumble as he lifted the jacket over his head, "If you say so, ya sap."
They fell in comfortable silence; as comfortable they could get with the horrid heat.
The sun was at its highest peak when Kallus heard a soft thump behind him. The former agent whipped around, and nearly threw their only connection to the Ghost into the endless desert.
"Zeb!"
Kallus quickly ran up and removed the jacket that obscured part of the Lasat's face. He shook his partner and felt the searing heat coming off the Lasat in waves.
"Zeb!"
The Lasat didn't respond.
No! Nonono. They were so close!
"Zeb! Zeb! Wake up!"
Kallus tucked the transponder into his jacket pocket and once again tied the material around his waist. He grabbed a hold on Zeb and began to drag the Lasat the rest of the way.
The blazing heat that emanated from Zeb almost made the ex-agent release the Lasat a few times, but he grit his teeth and continued to push on. Sweat dripped steadily off Kallus' face, the liquid making his clothes uncomfortably stick to his body.
His vision swam from the scorching heat that bore down on the barren land. He gasped for air, the warmth of it nearly made Kallus vomit.
Suddenly he felt the air moderately cool, Kallus glanced around and let out a relieved sigh. He made it to the rocks– the shade. Without a moment to lose, he pulled Zeb fully into the fresh shadows laying him down carefully, "Zeb! Dear!"
Kallus cupped the Lasat's face, "We made it! Wake up."
His heart began to sink the longer he went without a response. Kallus frantically searched for Zeb's pulse, he let out a shaky exhale when he felt the faint heartbeat thumping against his fingers.
Kallus hastily untied his jacket, threw the transponder off to the side, and messily folded the clothing to fan the Lasat to try to cool him down. "Please! Zeb, wake up!"
He shouldn't be wasting his energy on crying, but Kallus couldn't stop his tears from running down his face. He buried his face into Zeb's soft fur, hissing as the heat the unconscious body exuded was unbearable to the human, How bad was it for Zeb?
After what felt like hours, Kallus forced himself to release his grasp on Zeb. He looked down in the sand to see the transponder laying forgotten. The ex-agent sighed and dragged himself to the machine to correct its frequency.
It was kriffing hot.
…
The sun was setting when the human was woken up by the sound of a ship. Kallus shot up, ran out of the shade, and saw the welcoming sight of the Ghost. Kallus let out a hysterical laugh as he waved his arms to alert the Spectres of their location.
He clumsily ran up to Hera and Kanan, the Jedi caught him before his knees collapsed from under him. His sunburnt skin screamed with the touch, but Kallus ignored the pain.
The ex-agent's fingers gripped onto the blind Jedi's arm, "Zeb– He needs help!"
The fear in the Spectres' eyes made Kallus shiver, Kanan passed the former agent over to Hera before he ran towards the rocks where Zeb lay.
Hera led Kallus to the Ghost, "N-no. I need to help Kanan– help Zeb!"
The Twi'lek kept her tight hold on the thrashing human, "Kallus you're not doing any better yourself. You're not going to be much help."
He knew that but… but…
Hera cut through his unfinished thoughts, "Don't worry, you've done the best you can. We'll do the rest of the hard work, you just focus on getting better."
When they entered the ship, Hera's commanding voice echoed throughout the durasteel walls.
"Rex! We need you outside!"
Hera led Kallus to the medbay, "Ezra! Sabine! I'm going to need ice packs– or anything that'll cool down a body!"
She sat down Kallus on the cot before turning to the orange droid who had followed the Twi'lek once she had entered the Ghost. "Chop, keep an eye on Kallus. Don't let him leave medical. I'm going to help Kanan and Rex with Zeb."
Chopper saluted, before turning to the ex-agent and producing his electro-shock prod. He tried to goad Kallus into leaving the room, promising not to shock the human if he got up from the bed.
Kallus might have been exhausted, but he wasn't stupid, after all it only took two shocks before he realized that the droid was messing with him.
"Traitor."
…
After hours of laying in the Ghost covered head-to-toe in ice packs and wet towels, Kallus could finally say with finality that he was currently freezing.
He still wasn't allowed to leave the room– or get up for that matter– not until Hera gave the okay. Which was why Chopper was put in charge of guarding the medbay; his threatening whirring and chatter kept Kallus from getting out of the cot.
He sighed, his eyes growing heavy for a second before a groan from beside him made Kallus shoot up. The materials on him crashing onto the floor as he got onto his feet.
Angry beeping filled the room as Chopper chastised Kallus for getting up. The ex-agent ignored the racket, "Chopper! Go get Hera! Zeb's waking up!'
The grumpy droid beeped in confirmation before speeding away. Kallus turned to the Lasat in the cot next to him, watching as Zeb's emerald green eyes slowly fluttered open. The sight made Kallus cup his love's face and begin to pepper small kisses all over.
A purr rumbled throughout Zeb's chest, "Kal?"
"Thank the Stars you're okay! My Zeb, I was so worried."
Zeb cupped the human's face with one hand and wiped away any stray tears. He gave his love a weak smile, "I'm fine, Kal. Sorry for scaring ya."
"No, no. It's not your fault," the ex-agent lay his hand on Zeb's, caressing the soft fur there. He moved the hand to his lips, giving the palm a tender kiss.
"You know," Zeb dryly swallowed at the sight, his ears twitched as he tried to compose himself. "I'm still holding out hope for that beach planet, Kal."
Kallus gave a breathless laugh, "Maybe once you've recovered, we'll go on our own terms."
The Lasat's eyes lit up, "Really?"
"Anything for you, my dear." Kallus pressed one last kiss to Zeb's hand before the eleated voices of the Spectres rushing over the medbay reached his ears. Kallus tightened his hold on Zeb's hand; the Lasat returned the gesture, a smile gracing his features, "I can't wait."

So Lila is having a party and hires Mari’s partners bakery to cater. The Batfam come over to surprise Mari with a visit. Mari has to work Lila’s party. The Batfam decide to help out. At the end of the party Lila decides to not pay for the pastries. And says “if Marinette was a friend she would give them to us for free.” The Batfam is pissed and put not only Lila but the entire class in their place. Sooooo much salt
This is also based off of a prompt @virgil-is-a-cutie sent me forever ago.
Marinette stared down at the name on the catering order, dread curdling in her gut like sour milk.
Lila Rossi
"We're catering a party tonight?" Marinette looked up at her parents, who were frantically putting together the order that had been sent in last minute. The sight made Marinette's heart ache.
"The poor girl told us that her caterer cancelled on her last minute and this is for her birthday, so we decided to take it." Sabine smiled brightly, though it was obviously strained along the edges as she whipped up some more buttercream icing for the towering birthday cake they were putting together.
"I just hope we can find someone to help us cater on such short notice." Tom muttered as he took another batch of chocolate filled croissants out of the oven, filling the air with the buttery sweet scent.
"I could help!" Marinette spoke out quickly, then winced. She knew exactly what this party was, it was the one that Lila had been going on and on about for months, a big party where tons of celebrities would be, as well as Lila's millionaire boyfriend. There were also her braggings about getting special caterers from Spain, but Marinette assumed this was just Lila backpedalling with a new story of the caterers canceling on her last minute.
It was also a party that Marinette had not been invited to and was basically banned from by her class.
But still, she couldn't just let her parents deal with this alone, they didn't deserve that!
Her parents beamed and Sabine hugged her daughter tightly, just as the front door's bell jingled. Marinette peeked out of the kitchen and blinked in surprise with she saw four men standing in the bakery entrance. Four familiar men.
"What are you guys doing here in Paris?" Marinette pushed her way through the swinging door, rushing over to the four Wayne sons and throwing herself into Damian's arms, warmly kissing him
as she was picked up and spun around.
"We wanted to visit you." Tim offered, blinking in surprise when Marinette wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek.
"We wanted to see you, Angel." Damian smiled, then shot a glare to his brothers, Jason specifically. "Though one is us simply wanted to stuff his ugly mug full of pastries. I swear, he'll end up fat with diabetes and alone for the rest of his life."
"Whatever, Demon Spawn, you're just jealous because Marinette likes making goodies for me more than you." Jason rolled his eyes, but scooped up Mari into a tight hug. "Your boyfriend here has been antsy to see you."
"Because I couldn't stand the sight of your face anymore." Damian shot back, before turning his gaze to Marinette once again. He noticed the lines of stress around her mouth, her eyes. Something was obviously bothering her. "Marinette, what's wrong?"
"Huh?" Marinette looked between the four guys nervously, fiddling with one of her pigtails. "Oh, nothing! It's just that we just got a last minute catering gig and we don't have enough catering staff. As in I'll be the only one serving alongside my parents."
Dick and Jason exchanged glances before the oldest Wayne boy reached out and set a hand on the girl's shoulder.
"Let us help you tonight, Mari. We wanted to spend time with you anyways, so this can help with the issue." Dick offered, smiling brightly down at her.
"No, I couldn't ask that of you! Besides, you've probably never catered before, I wouldn't want anyone getting hurt!" Mari stuttered out as her parents exited the kitchen, covered in flour, sugar, and sweat.
"Well, Angel, I'm sorry to say." Damian smiled, crossing his arms as he watched her. "You don't really have much of a choice."
---
Looking back on it now, Marinette was more than happy the boys insisted. The entire school was at this party being hosted by Lila at Le Grand Paris. Marinette silently wondered how the hell Lila could afford this.
She served people the chocolate croissants, though kept clear of her classmates, not wanting to deal with any of that smack talk. From what she saw of the boys, they were doing superb, some of her classmates *cough* Sabrina *cough* Alya *cough* openly flirted with the beyond handsome guys.
As Marinette turned to serve a few kids from her art club, her stomach dropped at the sight of Lila walking over to her. Ever since Lila had turned seventeen, she had taken to wearing these tight clothes that hid nothing of her body. Marinette was pretty sure that tight orange evening dress Lila had on fit her like a second skin. And it obvious the girl was not wearing a bra, by the gods where was the bleach.
"Marinette! It was so kind of you and your parents to cater my party this evening! I really appreciate it, the food was lovely, there were even done croissants that weren't dried out." Lila grinned, her green eyes sparking with malice as their class surrounded them, shooting Marinette glares as they hadn't wanted the baker's daughter anywhere near this party to ruin it.
"I'm glad you enjoyed it, Lila." Marinette forced a smile, her hands gripping the edges of her platter tightly. She honestly wanted to chuck it at Lila and run. "My parents will be sending you the bill tomorrow."
Alya snorted, as well did the rest of miss Bustier's class. Lila joined in, her laughter drawing the attention of the nearby Damian.
"Very funny, Marinette. I know all about you not charging your friends. And you are such a good friend, right, to cater my birthday party for free? It's my eighteenth after all, you wouldn't want to make me cry on my birthday." Lila fluttered her lashes, but the threat was clear. If Marinette said no, Lila would put up a stink in front of the entire school and ruin the bakery's reputation.
"But... But this entire gig is worth about three hundred and forty euros." Marinette visibly paled, her eyes darting to her parents who were setting down the large birthday cake Lila had ordered, one with fifteen layers. They had worked so hard ever since two am that morning... It would be so much money down the drain.
"God, Marinette, don't be selfish! You catered to my birthday party last year, didn't you?" Alya snapped, crossing her arms as she cocked her hip.
"Yours was only a few trays of cupcakes, Alya.." Marinette began to tremble in anger as she noticed Lila tearing up. How dare they.. How dare they expect something this expensive for free?! Marinette was sure Lila was going to try and get this ballroom for free too, as well as the decorators!
"That is a bit ridiculous, don't you think?" Damian stepped up beside his girlfriend and shot Lila a withering glare. "This is a very expensive venue, a true friend wouldn't ask for that ridiculous amount of a discount. Even a best friend."
"I don't know who you are, but you will certainly be hearing from my boyfriend if you don't mind your own business!" Lila snapped, tossing her hair over her shoulder, which unfortunately caught Alya in the face, knocking her glasses onto the floor.
"Oh yeah, who's your boyfriend?" Tim strode up, eyebrow raised. He couldn't imagine anyone wanting to kiss that vile girl.
"Damian Wayne. His family is very rich and powerful, you know." Lila sneered, setting her hands on her hips, unaware of Alya being on her hands and knees, desperately searching for her glasses.
"That's funny. I don't ever remember having a girlfriend quite like you. Last time I checked, my girlfriend had the most beautiful blue eyes, and the most adorable freckles." Damian wrapped an arm around Marinette's waist, pulling her close as he planted a kiss on her cheek.
"I take it you're the lying girl that made my little Pixie Pop cry." Jason loomed over the group, a feral smile on his face as he crossed his arms, the entire room watching them now. "Throwing our father's name around isn't too smart, Lie-la."
"Neither is telling the hotel staff that our father is paying for this venue." Dick commented as he strode over, Mayor Bourgeois right behind him, sweating nervously.
"What do you mean? I don't know what stunt you're trying to pull, but Bruce Wayne will certainly send his lawyers after you lot for trying to pass yourselves off as Wayne's!" Lila snapped, fear flickering across her features, her skin paling a bit.
"Enough with the lies, Miss Rossi, I do not take kindly to those who bully my future daughter in law."
The voice cut sharply through the rising noise of the class beginning to shout at Marinette for setting this scenario up to ruin the party, and the rest of the school whispering to each other that Lila's other promises hadn't come true. Jagged Stone and Clara Nightengale never appeared to play at the party; Nino had been forced to DJ last minute with Lila convincing him to do it for free. Prince Ali never came to dance with Lila. Everything she said never seemed to add up.
But the sight of Bruce Wayne, a tall, handsome, imposing figure, shut everyone up. He made his way towards his sons and Marinette's class, a kind smile forming on his face as he reached Marinette.
"I was wondering where you all had gone. It seems you all neglected to mention to me that you had my sons helping you tonight. You know, I could have chipped in too, Marinette." He patted her head fondly, while Lila started to sweat bullets. Alya, once having found her glasses, though one of the lenses was cracked, put them on and looked over at Bruce Wayne, gasping rather loudly.
"Oh my god, Bruce Wayne! I'm so glad to finally meet you! Can I get an interview on your thoughts of your son Damian getting married to Lila next year? Are you really going to get her shoes made of gold? Will she really take off with him on a horse drawn carriage to their honeymoon in Fiji?" She babbled out, taking her phone out to record the conversation. Though one look from Bruce's icy eyes stopped her dead.
"I believe you need to re-check those sources of yours. I have no idea who this Miss Rossi is, except she has been having large expenses being put down under my name." He growled, while his sons snickered behind him. Lila gulped and began to tremble, never thinking Bruce Wayne would actually find out about those expenses. Most rich people didn't, they just spent money without a care in the world, right?
"Please, there's a misunderstanding..." Lila squeaked out, while Alya saw red, turning on Marinette.
"How dare you! You turned the Waynes on Lila too?! What, did you spread those ostrich legs of yours to corrupt them? God, Marinette, you're the most selfish, cruel, manipulative girl I know!" Alya got right in Marinette's face, reaching out for her. But Damian stepped in her way, a look of murder on his face.
"Touch her and you lose your hands, and I'll have my friend's mother ruin that God damn blog of yours. Lois already hates the sight of it, she's eager to tear it apart." He hissed through clench teeth.
The silence was thick as Bruce turned to Mayor Bourgeois, who was ringing his hands.
"I have no intention of paying for this venue. Everything that she out under my name tonight is to be charged to Miss Rossi, understand?" The cold tone had the mayor nodding and trembling under the Wayne's cold gaze.
"Tom, Sabine." Bruce turned to the couple, and his warm smile returned. "I daresay you both wasted enough time here. How about we all go out for dinner now, hm?"
"You can't do this to me!" Lila sobbed, tears flooding her eyes as she hugged herself, before frantically turning to a shellshocked Alya. "Alya, I can't afford this! You need to help me!"
"It's okay, Lila, Marinette won't get away with this. Adrien still likes you, right? Why not ask his father to cover it? You're his most prized model, remember?" Alya smiled, though her brows were drawn together in uncertainty.
Lila took a moment to smooth down her hair, to calm herself. She mustn't lose control, she could easily turn this on Marinette, on her parents, on the Waynes. She was Lila Rossi, the most adored girl in school. She wouldn't let anything like stupid Marinette the chink ruin this for her.
So with a stunning smile and some words to wave away any doubt, she strode over to her massive birthday cake as the Waynes and Marinette's parents left, announcing it was time for some delicious cake. She was about to cut a slice, when someone (definitely not Juleka) bumped into the table holding the cake. The massive cake wobbled, before it went teetering onto Lila and Alya, splattering them both in cake and buttercream frosting, as well as a ripping down as Alya stumbled and stepped on Lila's dress, causing the material to rip from hem to the top of her bodice.
Marinette could hear their screams of outrage as she entered the Wayne's limo to head out for a nice dinner with her boyfriend and his family
---
The fallout of the entire debacle was a mess, an extreme one. Lila's mother found herself suddenly with bills that almost lead deep into the thousands of euros, as well as some lawsuits from celebrities that caught wind of Lila using their names to get things and into places.
Alya was sent lawsuits after lawsuits by the same celebrities for her lies on her blog, and her parents as well as Nino's were furious when they found out that the two had been sneaking out of babysitting for secret dates, dumping their children onto either Marinette or Lila's lap, the latter being a complete stranger.
But Monday morning had to be the worst. The school was talking about the disaster of a party, of everyone being forced out of the venue since Lila couldn't pay, of Lila accidentally flashing people once her dress hand been ripped in two thanks to Alya. They even spoke of Miss Bustier's class as if they were the plague, and avoided the group in fear of facing any backlash.
When Marinette arrived that morning with Adrien at her side, both were laughing as Marinette carried a stack of papers. When Marinette saw the class, they all looked tired, ashamed. Many got up to beg for her forgiveness, but she merely waved them back to seating, then handed each and everyone one of them a piece of paper. They each read them, noticing that they looked like receipts.
"Hey, Marinette, what are these?" Kim held up his paper, frowning in confusion. Marinette rose a brow and set her hands on her hips.
"Your bills for every event, every cake, every dress or outfit I made any of you for free." She replied flatly, crossing her arms as soon as she sat. Adrien handed a red eyes Lila a piece of paper as well. "Bruce Wayne made me realize that since you all aren't really my friends, I shouldn't have to waste so much money on all of you."
"This is from my father. This is for your official termination." Adrien's smile was bright as Lila began to tremble in anger at the sight of it. "It was nice knowing you, Lila."
The class was on their feet in seconds, shouting in outrage as soon as they saw exactly how high their receipts were asking for. It was over a million for the class as a whole. Marinette raised her left hand to cover a yawn, and Alya caught sight of a rather impressive wedding ring. The reporter pointed at it and cried out in shock.
"You're engaged?!" She screamed, her hand crushing her receipt as she trembled. Hers was the highest out of everyone's. Her parents were going to kill her.
"Yes, just last night. We'll be getting married next year." Marinette shrugged, smiling at Adrien as she motioned to his left hand. "And Adrien and Tim will be getting married soon after graduation."
Everyone stared at the gold band on Adrien's left ring finger, many going pale. Alya worked up a shaky smile.
"W- we can't wait to go, you guys! Congratulations, they'll be the weddings of the century." Her mind already swirled around the possibilities of covering those weddings on her blog, it could save her entire career.
"Oh Alya." Adrien clicked his tongue in disdain, hooking arms with Marinette and the two of them smiled, like wolves about to slaughter the sheep. Then in unison they spoke.
"You all will be too far in debt to even buy a newspaper about our weddings."
And that night, the class suffered the worst grounding they had ever seen, with many bank accounts being drained to scramble and pay back the Dupain-Chengs. Lila and her mother had to file for bankruptcy, and were forced back to Italy thanks to the embassy catching wind of this scandal.
Meanwhile, Damian cuddled with Marinette as they laid under the stars on her roof, their left hands gripped tightly as their engagement rings twinkled softly in the moonlight.

ML: Isolation Chapter 25: Truths at the Agreste Manor
When Marinette got home, she was greeted by her parents. “Hi sweetie,” her mom said.
“How was your day?” her father asked. Marinette looked up as she took her disguise off. She had a smile ear to ear. Her parents were surprised. “...Marinette…”
“Wh-What happened?” her mom asked.
Marinette started blushing. “Well...it’s, uh, sort of complicated…”
“Well, you can tell us,” Sabine said.
“Right, but, um, maybe we should do it upstairs,” Marinette said. Her parents looked at each other, nodded, and the three headed upstairs. They got seated on the couch, with Marinette in the middle. Marinette proceeded to explain the day’s events.
“So, um, yeah… I...I have a boyfriend now…” Before Marinette could awkwardly say anything else, her parents gave her a hug. It was tight, it was sudden, but most importantly, it was filled with love. Her parents stood by her in everything, but only now is she realizing how much that actually was to them. To see them so happy that she’s happier than she’s been in a long time, it made her feel even happier too. Marinette did the best she could to reciprocate the joint hug. “Thank you. For everything.”
Meanwhile, Adrien walked in the house. He was so excited. Despite all of the complications, Marinette was his girlfriend and he was over the moon. However, upon entering, he got a mysterious text from Nathalie. “Just go to your room. Go straight there. Don’t worry. I can handle it.”
He looked at his phone. “What?”
“Adrien!” his father called out. He, his mother, and Nathalie walked out to see him in the foyer. “Adrien,” his father continued. “You can settle this once and for all.”
Adrien was confused. “Settle what?”
“Adrien, don’t” Nathalie said.
“Oh come on,” Gabriel said. “He’s right here.”
“Well, it may be hard for him to say it,” Emilie explained. “You know how teenagers can be.”
“True,” Gabriel relented. “But you could see it too, right?”
“Of course sweetie,” Emilie agreed.
“See? I’m? What?” Adrien stammered.
“Please, just let it go,” Nathalie said, exacerbated. “All of you.’
“I don’t even know what’s going on,” Adrien said.
Gabriel rolled his eyes. “Very well. Last night at the auction, your mother and I noticed that you had a certain affinity toward that young woman you were hanging out with.”
Adrien was confused. “You mean Lila?”
“Yes,” Gabriel said. “We think you might have a thing for her.”
“We’ve been trying to set something up for the two of you,” Emilie added, “but Nathalie kept insisting we don’t.”
Adrien took a moment to process what was just said before he laughed. “No. Just no.”
Gabriel and Emile were confused. “See? You heard it from him. Now just drop it” Nathalie insisted.
“Hold on Adrien,” Gabriel said. “That was an awfully curt response. Would you care to explain?”
“Um, no?” Adrien replied. “Just know that I would never, NEVER, go out with Lila.”
“But you looked so cute together,” Emile explained. “And also, you looked like you had a real thing for her.”
“Well, I don’t…” Adrien answered.
Gabriel and Emilie gave each other a confused look. “Please,” Nathalie insisted. “You heard what Adrien had to say on the matter, now let it go.”
“Hold on,” Gabriel said. “Do...you not know how to interact with girls any other way?”
Adrien rolled his eyes. “Yes. I have NO idea how to interact with girls apart from flirting with them. That’s why I haven’t been able to maintain a close friendship with Chloe all these years. Oh wait.”
Gabriel slammed his fist on the railing. “Don’t get sarcastic with me, young man.”
“Well, maybe you should just listen to Nathalie then!” Adrien shot back.
Tensions between the Agreste men were high. “We just want to know what’s going on,” Emilie said in hopes of cooling things down.
“Well, tough,” Adrien said, shocking the both of them. “I’m starting to live my own life now. With my own actions, and my own interests, and my own secrets. I don’t need to tell you everything, especially since until recently, you knew everything because you forced that onto me.”
Emile’s face went pale. Gabriel’s also did, before it turned red with rage. Emilie noticed this. “Sweetie.”
“Adrien!” Gabriel shouted.
“Don’t!” Emilie insisted.
Gabriel calmed down, but was no less displeased. “Adrien. We’re your parents. You can trust us with anything.”
Adrien looked at his parents. They seemed confused and distressed; a feeling he spent most of his life feeling. “OK. But I don’t have to tell you anything.”
Emile was now shocked at him. “Adrien!”
“Like I said, I have my own life now” Adrien reiterated.”And I can choose what to tell you.”
“Adrien,” his father said again, still keeping calm. “We don’t keep anything from you. So please, be open with us.”
Adrien’s heart stopped when he heard those words. He started laughing maniacally. “Is that a joke? Are you trying to be funny? Because if you are, that’s hilarious.”
His parents looked at each other confused. “Adrien, what is the meaning of this?” Emilie asked.
Adrin snapped. “WHY DID YOU KEEP ME HERE FOR SO LONG?!” he shouted. “WHY WAS I LOCKED AWAY WHEN ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS ROAM FREE?! Not even free free. I’d have gladly taken you guys tagging along everywhere compared to the NIGHTMARE I was living. I wouldn’t wish upon the most heinous forces on this EARTH the treatment my own parents gave to me!”
Adrien started to breathe heavily. This was supposed to be the happiest day of his life so far, but now he’s opening up to his parents about how he feels in, to put it mildly, not the healthiest way. “So, forgive me if I don’t want to open up to you about certain things.”
His parents were pale. They had just received a shocking talking to from their son. Both of them were shaking. Gabriel seemed very tense. Before he could yell though, Nathalie stepped in. “HE DOESN’T REMEMBER!” Everyone looked at her. “He was two, he was sleeping for most of it, he doesn’t remember.”
The weight of that fell on the Agreste parents’s shoulders, as they finally began to understand Adrien’s earlier outburst, and previous attempts to escape. “You...really don’t know, do you?” Gabriel asked. Adrien seemed confused again. “Very well. To the family room.”
Emilie was surprised. “Are you sure?”
Gabriel smiled. “Positive.” Gabriel walked over, with everyone else following. Once they entered, Gabriel instructed “Sit.” They both did. Emilie was trembling, which further confused Adrien.
Meanwhile, his father opened a cabinet and pulled out an old new paper. He sat down with them and shared the paper with Adrien. Adrien couldn’t believe his eyes. “‘Fashion Designer and Actress’s Son Kidnapped’?” Adrien was in complete disbelief when he saw a picture of himself when he was a toddler.
“Yes,” Gabriel explained. “One day, we were at the park. You were playing with some of the other children. When our eyes lost you, we couldn’t find you again.”
“It was scary,” Emilie continued. “I mean, our only child was missing. We’d only been parents for as long as you were alive, so we had no idea what to do.”
“We looked for you everywhere” Gabriel said “We spent the next two hours looking through the park for you. We searched everywhere, we asked everyone, we called the police, everything.”
“And then…” Emilie said, tightly gripping her dress, “...we got a call.”
Adrien was stunned. Gabriel continued. “A group of people had drugged you and taken you. They gave us 48 hours to give them 70 million Euros.”
“I was just about ready to empty my bank account” Emilie said, tears starting to stream down her face.
“We explained as much to the police” Gabriel said, also starting to cry. “I mean, our only son was just taken from us because of our wealth. How could anyone not?”
Emilie sniffed. “But before we were able, the police found you.” She smiled, but was still crying. “We were so relieved.”
“But while that nightmare was over, another nightmare began,” Gabriel explained.
“We were so scared of losing you again,” Emilie said. “We couldn’t think straight.”
“We panicked. We lashed out at others,” Gabriel said. “We were so paranoid that we could hardly sleep or focus on anything. Eventually, we decided to see a therapist.”
“Through our talks, we became more well-adjusted, but we were still afraid,” Emilie informed him. “That’s when we made the decision to shelter you.”
“Every so often, we discussed lifting such restrictions,” Gabriel added. “We knew you wanted to, but we were never ready until recently.”
“The thought of losing you was just…” Emilie said. She couldn’t finish the thought.
Adrien finally heard the answer to the biggest question of his life. His parents, to quell their demons, sheltered him. Adrien was breathing heavily. “I...I had no idea…”
“I thought you understood it, son,” Gabriel said.
“It was part of our daily life for years on end,” Emilie said. “I didn’t realize you lived unaware.”
Adrien was upset. At whom? It was complicated. He was upset at himself for resenting his parents while not understanding them, he was upset at his parents for pushing their demons onto him, and he was upset at the world for allowing this to happen in the first place. “I’m sorry,” he said. “For screaming at you.”
Gabriel smiled. “It’s fine. I get it.”
“Yeah” Emilie said, swooping in for a hug. “It’s OK now.”
Adrien smiled. “Thanks.” Gabriel joined the hug. At this moment, after years of panic and paranoia on Gabriel and Emilie’s part, and disappointment and resentment on Adrien’s, peace had finally been restored to the Agreste household.
Once the hug was over, Gabriel asked “So...now that that’s...been aired out...what IS the deal with you and that Lila girl…?”
Adrien was a bit embarrassed, but had a clear answer. “Well, to be honest, it’s not exactly my secret to tell. But if you hold on a second, I can see if I could be able to tell you.”
“Very well,” Gabriel said.
“We trust you, 100%” Emilie reassured. Adrien smiled, nodded, and went to his room.
He logged onto his computer and called you Marinette. “Hello?” she said.
“Hey” he said. There was a bit of silence. “Sorry, I was trying to think of a good pet name, but I’m a bit distracted.”
Marinette smiled. “It’s OK. I still love you. So, what’s up?”
“Well…” Adrien said. “Things got very intense.”
“Oh” Marinette said. “Did you tell them about us? Do they not approve? Oh goodness, of COURSE Gabriel would never approve.”
“No no,” Adrien interrupted. He did giggle at that notion though, as he needed a bit of levity like this after what just happened. He sighed. “So, during the Louvre mission, my parents were under the impression that I had a thing for Lila.”
Marinette was surprised. “Oh.”
“I didn’t want to say anything, because, well, I don’t know how much they would, you know, like me doing all of this” Adrien continued. “It spiraled out of control, and I ended up yelling at them about how I always felt like I was a prisoner in this place.”
“What happened?” Marinette asked.
“Before my father could say anything, Nathalie interrupted and informed him and my mother that I don’t know why they did such a thing” Adrien answered. “So they sat me down and opened up about how when I was two, I was kidnapped for ransom.”
“WHAT?!” Marinette said equally as shocked as he was.
“Yeah…” Adrien said. “Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they should have, I just...understand it…”
Marinette looked down. “I’m...sorry..”
Adrien was puzzled. “You don’t need to apologize. I mean, I assume you were two as well, and you didn’t know my parents to ask them not to.”
Marinette chuckled slightly. “No, it’s not that. I’m just thinking. Your parents were at their wit’s end, and that pushed them to an extreme reaction. Well, that’s kind of what I did too. Lila pushed me so far that I felt like I had no choice but to never be seen again. So, I get it.”
Adrien smiled. “It’s OK. I don’t blame you for that either.”
Marinette laughed back. “Thanks.”
Adrien laughed as well. “So, now, I’m wondering, would it be OK to tell my parents about you, and I, and, well, us?”
Marinette blushed. “I think that’s fine. In fact...why don’t you give me a call, and we can do it together.”
Adrien smiled and blush. “I’d like that. See you soon then, I guess.”
“Oh right. We have to leave this” Marinette said. “Yeah.” They smiled for a few seconds longer and logged out at the same time.
Adrien took a deep breath, and walked out. As he was going to meet his parents, he gave Marinette a call. Once she popped up, he said “Missed you” which got a good chuckle out of Marinette. He then rejoined his parents in the family room. They looked at him intently. “Mother...father…” He held up the phone. “This is Marinette, my girlfriend.”
“Hi,” she said, embarrassed.
The Agreste parents looked at her intently, overcome with emotion. “Now, where to start…” Adrien wondered. His parents were confused.
“Well, maybe we should start with the fact that I’m Ladybug.”
“L-Ladybug?!” Gabriel said, worried. He covered his face.
“What are you doing honey?” Emilie asked.
“Well, it’s just,” Gabriel began, “one of the conditions for my deal with Ladybug is that we’d never meet.”
Marinette chuckled. “It’s fine Mr. Agreste. I’ll still work with you.”
Gabriel relaxed a little. “Oh. Thank you.” Emilie laughed a little too.
Adrien enjoyed the moment as well. “So, to explain how we got to this point…” Adrien and Marinette explained the entirety of the situation. Gabriel and Emilie listened as each detail came out, reacting to each piece with a disgust for Lila, a concern for Adrien, but mostly a happiness that they are working on this, and are doing well.
Once they wrapped up, Marinette said “I guess that was a lot.”
“Yeah,” Adrien said. “So, do you have any questions?”
Gabriel and Emilie tried thinking of some. “I...think I understand?” Gabriel said.
“I don’t know how I feel about some of this,” Emilie said, “but I get it. And even with that, I think it’s going well overall.”
“Of course it’s going well!” Gabriel said. “Our son has a girlfriend!”
“Oh, I’m absolutely ecstatic about that,” Emilie said.
Adrien and Marinette blushed. “So, you’re not mad?” Adrien asked.
“Of course not,” Gabriel said.
“While we would have liked you to have told us sooner, I...get why you wouldn’t…” Emilie explained.
Adrien smiled. “Thanks.”
“Marinette!” called Sabine from the other end. “Are you busy?”
“Moooom,” Marinette said.
“Oh, are you talking to Adrien?” Sabine asked. “Can I say hi?”
“Me too!” Tom said. “Just a second!”
“No!” marinette said. However, her denial was to no avail as within a few seconds, Sabine and Tom were looking in.
“Hi Adrie-” Sabine said. She stopped when she realized that she wasn’t in front of Adrien.
“Um, are you Marinette’s parents?” Gabriel asked.
“Um, yes…?” Tom answered.
“Oh, well we’re Adrien’s parents” Emilie said.
“Oh really?” Sabine said.
Emilie nodded. “Adrien and Marinette were just explaining everything to us.”
“Oh my” Sabine said.
“Rest assured, you have our support in all of this” Gabriel said. “I mean, anyone my son is going out with has to be a world class lady.”
“Oh, why thank you,” Tom said. “And likewise, anyone going out with Marinette must be a true gentleman.”
“Thank you,” Gabriel replied. Marinette and Adrien were thoroughly embarrassed.
“Oh, we really shouldn’t keep you,” Sabine said. “Why don’t we continue this another time?”
“I like that,” Emilie said. They exchanged information. “Talk to you later.”
“Bye!” Sabine said. Marinette’s parents left.
“Ugh…” Marinette groaned.
“Don't worry,” Gabriel said. “We really mean it. We’ll do whatever we can to help take down this Lila girl.”
Marinette was still embarrassed, but she told him “Thanks. Well, see you later, I guess.”
“Bye” Emilie gently cooed.
Adrien turned the phone to him. “See you later.” He hung up. Despite the surprise of Marinette’s parents, the conversation went considerably well.
However, that moment of peace was interrupted by Nathalie walking up to them. “So, do you have a good understanding of everything?” They all nodded. “Good. Then I am resigning as your secretary, effective immediately.”
“Nathalie?” Adrien said.
“What is the meaning of this?” Gabriel demanded.
“You can help Adrien now,” Nathalie said. Adrien noticed she was shaking. “My work here is over.” She walked toward the door but was stopped by the bodyguard. She looked up at him. “What?” He glared at her. “I know I promised, but…but…” The bodyguard opened his arms and Nathalie broke down. She collapsed into him, crying. “I’m sorry!”
The Agrestes were shocked by this display. The usually stoic Nathalie was a complete mess. “Is...everything alright?” Gabriel asked.
“NO!” Nathalie shouted. “I’m sorry!” The Agrestes were still puzzled. Once Nathalie got a hold of herself, she looked at the bodyguard and said “Thanks.” She then turned to the Agrestes, wiping her eyes. “I’m sorry.”
“You’ve said as much,” Adrien said.
“Right…” Nathalie said. There was a brief silence. Nathalie sighed. “I have to come clean. My last name isn’t Sancouer. It’s Fontaine.”
“Nathalie...Fontaine?” Gabriel said. He turned to Emilie. “Hey, didn’t we go to school with a-”
“Yes,” Nathalie said. “We are one in the same.”
Gabriel and Emilie’s faces went pale. “Oh” Gabriel said.
Adrien was still confused. “What does that mean?”
“Well, uh, hoo” Emilie said. “See, back in high school-”
“I’ll explain,” Nathalie said. “Back in high school, I was essentially like Lila.” Adrien was stunned. “I would lie and manipulate others to get what I wanted. And it would work...most of the time. The only thing I couldn’t get...was your father.”
This was a lot for Adrien. “Oh…”
“I tried and tried,” Nathalie explained. “But the harder I tried, the more in love your parents became. Soon, it all came crashing down on me.”
“I see…” Adrien said, still processing everything.
“Still, I wasn’t one to give up” Nathalie went on. “After high school, I changed myself a bit so that they wouldn’t recognize me, and I positioned myself to become Gabriel’s personal assistant to one day swoop in and take him away. I changed my name to reflect what you called me when you exposed me for who I really was.”
Adrien was wondering what she meant. “Heartless,” Gabriel said. “Sans-coeur.”
“Yes,” Nathalie said. “At first, even though it marked my defeat in high school, I wore it as a badge of honor. I felt like I didn’t need a heart if I could get what I wanted. But now, it’s a scar, forever reminding me of the person I was.”
The Agrestes were surprised. “What changed you?” Emilie asked.
Nathalie smiled. “The kidnapping of Adrien.” Adrien was stunned again. “Once I saw you two worry, and panic, and Adrien go missing, and return, and everything coming apart at the seams, but you two still were together in all of it, the pettiness just...melted away. Suddenly, it all felt real.
It stopped feeling like a game of chess I was trying to win, and it felt like I was stuck and everyone was moving on. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I wanted to run away then, but I felt like I couldn’t. I needed to repay you for everything I’ve done. So I decided to stay until my debt was repaid.”
“And you feel like that’s now?” Gabriel asked.
Nathalie nodded. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.” Nathalie tried leaving again, but was again blocked by the bodyguard. “What now?”
“Nathalie,” Gabriel called out. Nathalie turned to him. “I reject your resignation.”
Nathalie was confused. “What?”
“You heard me,” Gabriel said.
“Did you hear me?” Nathalie said. “I was your high school monster. I only came to this job to steal you.”
Gabriel smiled. “You must be more stuck than you realize” he said, surprising Nathalie. “High school was a long time ago. Any monster from then is nothing but a dust mite now. You seemed to have learned your lesson too. Besides, you’ve been very helpful, and I can safely say we all enjoy your company now. This new Nathalie is good.” Emilie nodded. Adrien nodded as well.
Nathalie was stunned. She looked at this smiling family accepting her for who she is and forgiving her. “Heh. Heh heh” she started crying again and collapsed to the floor. “Thank you. Thank you.”
Once Nathalie had composed herself, it was getting late. Nathalie shook hands with Gabriel, affirming her not resigning, and after that she and the bodyguard left for the night, as the Agreste’s decided to retire to their rooms.
Adrien tried calling Marinette again, but she didn’t answer. “Hm. Must be asleep. Oh well.” He smiled, set his phone down, and got under the covers. He smiled and he started dozing off with Marinette on his mind. Despite everything, this was the day Marinette and him started dating, and for him, that made today good.
