The 100 songs that changed metal (by Metal Hammer)
74. Within Temptation â Ice Queen (Mother Earth, 2000)
In the 90s, symphonic metal was more a glittering garnish than a scene in itself, something bands from Therion to Celtic Frost would sprinkle on their music to make it sparkle. And while the genre would start coming together into something more tangible towards the end of the decade, it wasnât until a few years later that a song would emerge to put symphonic metal on the map.
That song was Within Temptationâs Ice Queen. A complete volte-face from the gothic doom of the Dutch metallersâ 1997 debut, Enter, it appeared on the follow-up, Mother Earth, in a flurry of lavish arrangements and fairytale histrionics. Buoyed by vocalist Sharon den Adelâs crystalline voice, it pushed metal towards a new frontier, quickly whipping up a buzz in mainland Europe. Ice Queen can take credit for being symphonic metalâs first major hit, pushing women to the forefront and influencing a brand new generation of bands.
81. Evanescence â Bring Me To Life (Fallen, 2003)
Evanescenceâs debut single, Bring Me To Life, turned vocalist Amy Lee into a megastar. Arriving in 2003, when mainstream music was dominated by hyper-masculine men and overly sexualised pop stars, with her billowing long skirts, corset tops, arm socks and steely self-confidence, Amy redefined what a female artist could be, becoming a role model for millions of misfits and dreamers everywhere.
Despite its crunchy guitars and a rapped verse, courtesy of 12 Stonesâ Paul McCoy â which Amy has since said she was forced to add by their label â Bring Me To Lifeâs cobwebby, goth fragility also brought something fresh to nu metalâs dick-swinging party, extending the mainstreamâs flirtation with the genre for a little longer â as of 2019, itâs sold more than 3 million copies and has passed more than a billion streams on YouTube and Spotify.
82. Arch Enemy â We Will Rise (Anthems Of Rebellion, 2003)
We Will Rise was a huge song, not only for Arch Enemy but for the new generation of 21st-century melodic death metal they spearheaded. Guitarist Michael Amott had already laid down the melodeath blueprints with Carcass, while Arch Enemy themselves had already made three albums with singer Johan Liiva, but neither they nor anyone else had made an anthem quite like this.
As well as propelling the genre as a whole to greater heights and popularity, it provided a bigger platform for Angela Gossow â a hugely influential figure and one of the first prominent female vocalists to not only try but absolutely nail an extreme metal style. âHer emergence as a metal vocalist was, without hyperbole, revolutionary,â Svalbardâs Serena Cherry told us recently, and weâre not arguing.
84. Nightwish â Nemo (Once, 2004)
Nightwish didnât invent symphonic metal, but alongside peers Within Temptation and Epica, they popularised it and packaged it to the masses. By 2004, the Finns had already established themselves as a major player in Europe, but with the sumptuous Nemo, they broke through on an unprecedented level.
No longer a niche concern in the geeky corners of the metal world, symphonic metal, in all its lavish, overwrought glory revelled under a global spotlight. Nemoâs fantastical magic, sparkling piano refrain and stirring melody has endured â itâs still the bandâs best-known song â but its lasting image comes via its gothic music video, and then-singer Tarja Turunen singing in the snow in a blood-red coat. Nemo showed metal at its most fragile and beautiful.
95. Babymetal â Gimme Chocolate!! (Babymetal, 2014)
If elitists were tearing their hair out at the likes of Ghost, Bring Me The Horizon and Limp Bizkit being considered âmetalâ, then they might as well have just reached for the clippers for this one. The sight of three young Japanese girls rocking choreographed moves and singing sugary-sweet, J-pop-infused choruses about chocolate over heavy metal riffs was as shocking as it was delightful.
Babymetal hadnât just broken the mould for metal, either; theyâd given the West a fuller glimpse into the uniquely Japanese phenomenon of idol culture, and given the cutesy world of Kawaii a bigger global platform than ever. Overseen by band mastermind and producer extraordinaire, Key âKobametalâ Kobayashi, Babymetal were unlike anything our world had seen before: equal parts hyper-polished girl band and full-on heavy metal experience, with their mysterious Kami Band backing musicians as formidable as any âproperâ metal band you could name.
Cynics moaned, but with the likes of Rob Halford, Metallica and Corey Taylor throwing in their support, the trio quickly transcended their âgimmickâ tag to become a legitimate force in the modern metal landscape.
99. Spiritbox â Holy Roller (Eternal Blue, 2022)
Spiritbox were already firmly established as Ones To Watch by the time Holy Roller, the first single from Eternal Blue, exploded like a hand grenade in the summer of 2020. Once those first, colossal riffs rang out, however, it was clear that the Canadian troupe hadnât just levelled up considerably â they had successfully repositioned themselves as one of the most exciting and vital bands of their generation.
Backed by a memorable video inspired by Ari Asterâs disturbing Midsommar movie, Holy Roller was the perfect crystallisation of the last decade-plus of evolution in metal, packing djent, metalcore, nu metal and more into a massively crushing (but seriously catchy!) three minutes. âThis song was never intended to be a single,â explained vocalist Courtney LaPlante later. âOur mission statement was, âLetâs make the most ridiculous song that we can.ââ

The Evolution of Hot Hollywood Songs: A Decade of Musical Masterpieces
Hollywood has long been the epicenter of music and entertainment, producing some of the most iconic hot Hollywood songs that continue to captivate global audiences. The relationship between Hollywood and music is inseparable, with soundtracks, singles, and albums often defining an era, an artist, or even an entire generation. From pop anthems and power ballads to hip-hop beats and EDM-infused tracks, Hollywoodâs music industry has constantly reinvented itself, blending contemporary styles with nostalgic elements to keep listeners engaged. Whether it's a song from a blockbuster movie or an independent hit that takes over the streaming charts, Hollywood consistently delivers unforgettable musical experiences.
The Changing Sound of Hollywood Music
Music in Hollywood has evolved tremendously over the decades, reflecting cultural shifts, technological advancements, and changing audience preferences. In the early 2000s, the industry was heavily influenced by pop and R&B, with artists like Britney Spears, Usher, and Beyoncé dominating the charts. These songs were characterized by catchy hooks, upbeat rhythms, and heavily produced instrumentals that made them instant favorites. Meanwhile, rock bands like Linkin Park and Coldplay brought a different flavor to Hollywood music, blending alternative, rock, and electronic elements to create a fresh, distinct sound.
As the industry moved into the 2010s, the influence of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) became undeniable. With artists like Avicii, Calvin Harris, and David Guetta shaping the mainstream sound, electronic beats became a staple of many hot Hollywood songs. The rise of collaborations between pop artists and DJs, such as Rihanna with Calvin Harris on "We Found Love" and The Chainsmokers with Halsey on "Closer," showcased how Hollywood music had fully embraced electronic elements. Hip-hop and rap also experienced a massive surge, with artists like Drake, Post Malone, and Cardi B leading the charts.
By the late 2010s and early 2020s, Hollywood music had become more experimental, incorporating diverse influences from Latin, Afrobeat, K-pop, and indie genres. Songs like "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X, and BTSâs numerous chart-topping hits reflected the global reach of Hollywood music. With the rise of streaming platforms, independent artists also found opportunities to break into the mainstream, further diversifying the industry.
Iconic Hot Hollywood Songs That Defined Eras
Some songs not only top the charts but also leave a lasting cultural impact. Hollywood has produced a long list of songs that have become anthems of their time, staying relevant years after their release. These tracks have been played at parties, weddings, award shows, and even emotional farewells, proving their timeless appeal.
"Shallow" (2018) â Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper â A soulful ballad that became the heart of A Star is Born, winning numerous awards and resonating with audiences worldwide.
"Blinding Lights" (2019) â The Weeknd â A perfect blend of retro and modern music that set streaming records and became one of the biggest hits of the decade.
"Uptown Funk" (2014) â Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars â This funky, feel-good anthem took over the airwaves, remaining one of the most played songs even years after its release.
"Rolling in the Deep" (2010) â Adele â A powerful song that catapulted Adele to international fame, known for its hauntingly beautiful lyrics and soulful vocals.
"See You Again" (2015) â Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth â An emotional tribute song that became a global hit, dedicated to the late actor Paul Walker from the Fast & Furious franchise.
These songs have not only dominated the charts but have also been closely associated with Hollywood films, proving the powerful link between music and cinema. Whether itâs a romantic ballad, a high-energy dance track, or a poignant farewell song, these hits remain some of the most cherished pieces of music.
Why Hot Hollywood Songs Continue to Thrive
One of the primary reasons Hollywood songs remain successful is their ability to evolve while maintaining a connection to listeners' emotions. The industry has a unique way of blending different genres, collaborating with international artists, and leveraging the power of technology to create fresh, exciting music. Another key factor is the role of movies and television in popularizing songs. Soundtracks and theme songs often become just as iconic as the films themselves, helping artists gain recognition and increasing the songâs lifespan.
Streaming platforms have further amplified the reach of Hollywood music, allowing songs to go viral overnight. TikTok, in particular, has played a crucial role in making songs trend, with millions of users participating in challenges, dance routines, and lip-sync videos that turn tracks into global sensations. The influence of social media has given artists a direct connection with their fans, making it easier for them to promote their music and build a loyal audience.
The commercial aspect of Hollywood music also contributes to its success. Record labels, producers, and marketing teams work together to create massive promotional campaigns, ensuring that new releases receive maximum exposure. From featuring songs in commercials and movie trailers to launching high-budget music videos and organizing world tours, the industry leaves no stone unturned in making a song a hit.
The Future of Hollywood Music: What Lies Ahead?
The future of Hollywood music is bound to be even more dynamic and unpredictable. With advancements in artificial intelligence, virtual reality concerts, and digital distribution, the way people consume and experience music is set to change dramatically. AI-generated music and deepfake technology are already making waves, with artists experimenting with synthetic sounds and hyper-realistic avatars. While some critics argue that this could take away the authenticity of music, others see it as an opportunity for limitless creativity.
Genre-blending will also continue to shape the industry, with more artists collaborating across borders to create unique fusions. Weâve already seen successful partnerships like BeyoncĂ© and Shakiraâs âBeautiful Liar,â Justin Bieber and Luis Fonsiâs âDespacito (Remix),â and BTS with Coldplay on âMy Universe.â As technology erases geographical barriers, the global influence of Hollywood music will only expand further.
Despite all these changes, one thing remains certainâHollywoodâs ability to produce hot Hollywood songs will never fade. Whether through traditional pop hits, experimental new sounds, or nostalgic revivals, the industry will continue to create songs that define moments, connect people, and make history. The magic of Hollywood music lies in its power to inspire, entertain, and leave a lasting imprint on generations to come.

JAZZ
THE JAZZ IS...
Jazz is a musical genre that developed from the traditions of West Africa, Europe, and North America. It is found particularly in New Orleans, Louisiana, the cradle of the musical style, where large numbers of colored slaves arrived, mainly from West Africa. That is why jazz was born from the union of three traditions: the native American, the African and the European.
The first African-American musical representations were a mixture of rhythms and instruments associated with slave life and thus interpreted as songs of work and collective pleasure. In these early moments, improvisation was already a big part of this music, which contrasted with the music composed by whites.
The first record on which the word jazz appeared was recorded by the Original Dixieland Band in January 1917 in New York. During that year, in addition, the term would become popular, which had already been in common use in the oral language from 1913 to 1915.
Louis Armstrong
American jazz trumpeter, singer, and bandleader. In defining the artist, Duke Ellington was particularly on point when he said that if ever there was a Sir Sir, it would undoubtedly be Louis Armstrong. His musical career began in his hometown, where he played with various bands, until 1922, when Joe King Oliver inducted him into the Chicago Creole Jazz Band, where he married the band's pianist Lilian Hardin. . After performing in the Illinois state capital, Fletcher Henderson invited him to New York in 1924 to play with his big band and made recordings that showcased the musician's creativity and ingenuity. His virtuosity in improvisation had a great influence on jazz musicians in New York.
POP
Popular music is the source of the musical genre known as pop music. His name, pop, is an abbreviation of the word popular, which in Spanish means "popular", and is derived from English.
In the mid-20th century, England is where pop music first emerged, borrowing elements from various current popular music genres. This makes it a very eclectic genre, as it incorporates elements of more modern African-American musical styles such as rap and hip hop, as well as rock and roll, dance, gospel, soul, and folk music.
The verse-chorus-verse structure of pop music lyrical compositions, the short duration of its songs, and its catchy rhythms and choruses are some of its essential elements.
ADELE
The British artist published her album 30 last December and, since then, she has not stopped reaping successes. We were already used to the delicacy of Adele's music, to the sincere feeling that emanates from her lyrics. But in "30", the pop singer wanted to risk and show a much more vulnerable side by talking about her divorce.
ROCK AND ROLL
The history and origin of rock and roll cannot be told without going through gospel, blues, R&B and country. Today in Musical Vinyl we explain to you how that music was created that they thought would never last.
The birth of rock was the result of the combination of multiple musical genres through several decades, mainly in the US and the UK. Music has always been a means of expression for each generation and rock and roll was no exception, with it a whole musical and social revolution was born.
The Rolling Stones
Formed in 1962, the Rolling Stones have always been presented as the historical rivals of The Beatles. Within this comparison, the Stones represented the most aggressive current of rock music, even when they achieved stardom thanks to the song I wanna be your man, composed by the beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
FUNK
Funk is a musical genre that was born between the mid and late 1960s, when mainly African-American musicians fused soul, jazz, Latin rhythms and R&B, giving rise to a new rhythmic and danceable musical form.
The Funk genre, heir to Rhythm'n Blues, spread in America from the '70s. Generally of moderate or slow speed, Funk rhythms are characterized by accents on sixteenth notes, which first influenced Blues, Rock and Jazz until entering Dance music and modern Hip Hop.
Mark Ronson
British singer, songwriter and producer, Mark Ronson had to wait until his second album, "Version", to see his musical activity recognized.
Winner of a Brit award in 2015 and two Grammys in 2016, he has also produced for other artists, such as the singer Adele or the late Amy Winehouse, for whom he produced her album "Back to Black", for which he received several Grammys, including the one for best producer and the one for best recording, for the song "Rehab".
DANCE...
SALSA
Although a specific point cannot be defined, it is known that it was in Cuba. It was during the 17th century, when the music of the Spanish and French colonists, and that of the African slaves, began to merge, giving rise to a curious mix of Afro-Caribbean musical styles that evolved to what we know today as dip. This fusion spread, with the passage of time, throughout Latin America and reached the United States at the end of the 1960s. There it began to gain popularity, especially in New York, where a large number of the Latino population that emigrated later accumulated. of the Second World War.
The origin of the salsa dance steps occurred a little later. The movements are also a fusion of African and European tradition. The steps, movements and figures typical of salsa are a clear reflection of many of the dances that African slaves brought to the Caribbean and of those that Europeans have danced in Cuba since the 1930s. In fact, the basic steps of salsa salsa are the same as those of the Cuban son. It also has similarities with the mambo, the rumba and the danzĂłn, since they all draw on the same influences. But although they have common basic steps, each style is danced in a particular way, adapted to its own musical rhythm. These different variations depend on the region where each style has been developed.
WILLIE COLĂN
American musician of Puerto Rican descent. Master of the trombone and of the fusion of different Caribbean, Afro-American and urban music rhythms, together with the vocalist HĂ©ctor Lavoe he formed one of the most relevant couples in Latin music of the seventies, and is considered one of the pioneers in the development of the authentic salsa movement in the late sixties and early seventies. Grandson of Puerto Rican emigrants, Willie ColĂłn grew up in the Latino neighborhood of the Bronx, a fact that would mark a large part of his personal and artistic career, with what it implied of rebellion and transgression of established norms. After studying trumpet and clarinet, his admiration for Mon Rivera led him to opt for the trombone at the age of fourteen, and two years later, in 1966, he recorded his first album with the significant title of El Malo.
BALLET
Ballet is a performing art that can include dance, orchestral music, choir, mime, acting, scenery, costumes, and fantastic stories. It all depends on who its creator is and the time in which it was created. Many call it classical dance. Others call it academic dance. The truth is that we all recognize a ballet by the precision of the refined movements of the dancers.
Agrippina VagĂĄnova
Important ballet teacher, founder of her own teaching method. Dancer, teacher and ballet director, Agrippina Vaganova is remembered as one of the best teachers in the history of classical dance. She laid the foundations for a new interpretive style that she coined under the name of the 'Vaganova Method'.
DISCO DANCE
Disco music emerged as an underground movement around 1975. Afro-Americans, Latinos, Italians, the LGBT community and women were the promoters of a genre that emerged from the confluence of cultures. The disco dance is one of the most recognized dances of the 70s, both for the dance itself, and for its music. It has its origins in the late 60s and initially presents different musical arrangements, based on percussion and string arrangements.
BARRY WHITE
Barry White was born on September 12, 1944 in Texas, into a poor family, but grew up in the black ghetto of the city of Los Angeles (a high-grade place on the margins of crime). During the sixties he recorded several albums under his real name and as a member of the "Upfronts", the "Atlantics" and the "Majestics". However, his greatest success came as a producer for artists like Felice Taylor and Viola Wills.
In 1969, Barry White created the trio Love Unlimited. This title would later be taken to name his accompanying group, the Love Unlimited Orchestra.

David Jude Jolicoeur (September 21, 1968 â February 12, 2023), also known as Trugoy the Dove, Plug Two, and Dave, was an American rapper best known as one third of the hip hop group De La Soul.
Along with the other members of De La Soul, Jolicoeur was a member of the collective Native Tongues. Jolicoeur co-wrote the Gorillaz song "Feel Good Inc.", which featured De La Soul and won a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
Jolicoeur was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to Haitian-American parents, but he grew up in the Long Island hamlet of East Massapequa.
In his teen years, he attended Amityville Memorial High School in the Amityville area of Long Island, where he met and became friends with Vincent Mason, Kelvin Mercer, and Paul Huston. After they had separate solo spells in local groups, Jolicoeur, Mason, and Mercer eventually decided to form a rap group themselves, reuniting under the name De La Soul; they adopted the stage names, respectively, Trugoy the Dove, Maseo, and Posdnuos. Later in his career, Jolicoeur revealed that the first part of his stage name was just a humorous take on the anadrome of the word "yogurt". Huston, best known as Prince Paul, kept working with the trio as their producer.
With their eccentric fashion styles paired with the positive messages of the group's debut effort, 3 Feet High and Rising, the image led to critics and journalists labelling the members as "the hippies of hip hop" (a title that the group was quick to refute with the release of the second album De La Soul Is Dead in 1991).
Illness and Death
In the last years of his life, Jolicoeur was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and had to wear a LifeVest defibrillator machine in order to counteract its symptoms.
He revealed his health issues publicly for the first time in November 2017, in the opening scene for the music video of "Royalty Capes", a track from De La Soul's 2016 album, And the Anonymous Nobody... At the start of the video, Jolicoeur talked about how his heart problems affected his ability to perform and tour with the group consistently, saying: "(The LifeVest defibrillator) will shock me, and hopefully bring me back from the matrix. I'm ready just to get back to the stage. I miss it. I love traveling; I love being around my guys. And I want that back."
On February 5, 2023, De La Soul took part in a special performance for the 50 Years of Hip-Hop at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, performing their 1988 song, "Buddy"; however, Jolicoeur was not on stage with his group mates.
One week later, on February 12, 2023, his representative Tony Ferguson announced that Jolicoeur had died at age 54, with the cause of his death remaining undisclosed. Following the announcement, the late artist received tributes from several important figures in the hip hop industry.

Riddle me this, my brother, can you handle it? Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique (1989) Don't skip - ALL OF THEM Underrated track - Shadrach So 1989 was a good year for music. Several of my favorite albums came out that year. The Cure's Disintegration, De La Soul's 3ft High, Pixies' Doolittle, Pretty Hate Machine from None Inch Nails...and this, the granddaddy, the OG...Paul's Boutique. This album so sounds as fresh today as it did the day it came out. The use of samples I think hit its high point with this album. They came from everywhere...Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, Zamrock, cartoons, movies...even answering machines. They sampled everyone, including themselves. Shake Your Rump alone has 14 samples by 12 artists...on one single song...mixed to perfection with beat changes, break downs and even samples of bongs and straws. And this was before there were digital pads. No hitting a button, it was serious work using samplers that could hold only a small bit of info at a time. The Dust Brothers absolutely made perfection with the tracks. And don't think the Beasties just slacked off. Their rhymes were as dense as the tracks, and we're all over the place. They had references going from pop culture, to hippies, to political satire to biblical allusions. One of my favorites is Shadrach. It's a loose allusion to the biblical story of Sharach, Meshach and Abednego, and how they choose to be burnt by Nebuchadnezzar II rather than bowing to the king's image. They turn the parable on its head and turned it into a boast that they run their lives and choose who and what they honor. That was a bold statement coming from 3 punks who hit it as a novelty rap group. It was a statement of intent. This album just kills...and I could easily go into each song and opine ad nauseum...but I won't. Instead I'll say listen to this album and 3ft High And Rising today...to me, the most influential sample albums of all time. #samples #beastieboys #fattyvinylsession #discogs #vinyl #vinygram #vinylcommunity #audiotechnica #vinycollector #that33rpmlife #recordcollector #vinyljunkie #nowplaying #nowspinning #igvinyl #vinyladdict #instavinyl #onmyturntable #vinyllove (at Chateau Ruff N Baker City Deux) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpVZr9Ru1ug/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Thirty-Year Itch
When I was a young boy, I used to think that even twenty years was a lifetime â thirty was a millennium. When I turned thirty, I had the sinister feeling that I would have to grow up, start behaving maturely and that my young, green and careless days would be naturally terminated as instantaneously as my twenties.
As it happens, looking back for three decades â my thirties were possibly more enjoyable, along with the realisation that â as the meme suggests â âDonât grow up, itâs a trap!â So, turning back the clock to the year of 1989; an unbelievably pivotal year, not only for its eventful happenings, good and bad; but for the long-term change for the world.
Globally, we had the start of crumbling dictatorships and old regimes as the âIron Curtainâ began to flake. Romaniaâs overthrowing of its communist president, Nicolae Ceausescu and overhaul of the old communist republic, the smoother Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and even more famously â the majestically powerful opening of the Berlin Wall, ending one of the biggest divisions of the twentieth century, starting the reuniting of what we now know as Germany.
From the eyes of a naĂŻve, small-town boy from Wales who had two passions â sport and music, this particular year was an eye-opening door to wowing, new worlds and understanding heartache in a cruel world. In the sporting sense, it should have been another year remembered for success and silverware for my teams Llanelli RFC and Liverpool FC. Tragically, the events in Sheffield on April 15th, 1989 would change the landscape of years to come for my Merseyside second home after the loss of ninety-six lives at Hillsborough. With only a month to go until the anniversary of that colossal tragedy, Iâd only like to think of Liverpool as a city more solidified through its guts, grit and togetherness ever since.
Not only did the injustice, corruption and governmental evil epitomise the darker days of Thatcherite Britain and its inappropriate old guard of politicians and so-called leaders; but the legacy of loss and undermanagement in football changed how sport was facilitated, law was conducted â and how Liverpool and a city and as a football club â was both seen and run. Solidarity and deep doggedness from the Justice for the 96 team is something which I have grown, supported and seen â and wholeheartedly admired from Anne Williams, Margaret Aspinall and Trevor Hicks and all of their league of big, fighting hearts. Finally, some justice was seen two years ago â but did not replace those lost.
This would be something which also deeply personified but affected one of my first heroes, Sir Kenny Dalglish. As much as it makes me proud to see him acknowledged in being knighted for his compassionate work in the cityâs communities as well as for the football club, his career as our manager was torn apart by this maelstrom, forcing him to resign less than two years later. Probably my most memorable flashback of the year was watching the horror unfold on my grandparentsâ old television on that fateful day. If 1989 produced some vintage wines in the way of the aforementioned freedom around the world â this one was a poisonous drop.
On a more positive sporting note, while this was the height of passion in old Welsh rugby days â pre-Hillsboroughâs standing areas meaning you could fit way, way over capacity in each stadium; I remember sitting as a ball boy in the Scarlets matches on frosty, cold nights with what must have been around 20,000 people watching derby matches in a stadium which only held 10,800 people. Possibly the link of two happenings as a ball boy was being interviewed by a New Zealand TV crew, as I was wearing an All Blacks jersey on the side of the pitch one evening â as a precursor to their tour in October 1989. Meeting the squad â one of the best teams (even to this day) I have ever seen, the day after they beat Llanelli 11-0 the previous day. Sir John Kirwan, the towering winger signed his autograph in my little old book with âGo For Itâ, leaving me open-mouthed, as if Iâd met a god.
In culture, my most-watched movie (apart from Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope) in cinemas was released in June 1989, among the most memorable of marketing campaigns I can remember as a child. Tim Burtonâs Batman was something which I can honestly say â changed my life. I watched it four times in cinemas, then countless times when released on VHS later that year. The soundtrack by Prince, the score by Danny Elfman as well as the gothic darkness were elements with which I identified, more so than Spider-Man, after collecting tens of comics as a younger kid. It began a lifetime of slight obsession with the DC Comics character â which only petered out once Zac Snyder started making (and tarring) the Caped Crusader films with his green screen only style.
Furthermore to the Prince soundtrack, as it was a world of far fewer musical genres back then; I was a Hip-Hop child. It was a time of mullets, soft rock and heavy metal along the mainstream music world â so discovering Hip-Hop in â87 was something which kept me a bit one-eyed (or eared) as far as music went. 1989, it can be argued â was the best vintage year for the genre. Before the USAâs absurdly possessive copyright laws came into effect, we heard a year of sublime releases. Genre-expanding, sample-tastic albums, using the essence of Hip-Hopâs DJ styles â cutting pieces of tracks into new grooves were extending this brand of music method with new sub-genre styles. After years of Gangster Rap and politically charged messages from bands such as Ice-T, NWA and Public Enemy, a new wave of artists with alternate points to make had arrived, as did a segway from the underground to commercial hip-hop via some huge hits (Tone Loc, Neneh Cherry and so on).
This week holds significance as the thirty-year anniversary of the release of one of my most influential albums. My copy of De La Soulâs â3 Feet High And Risingâ became one of my school yearâs most passed-around tapes. Along with this fresh piece of genius (which incidentally cost the band more money because of the samples used, than made them cash â and which they are currently battling with Tommy Boy Records for being finally released digitally), we were blessed with rap pearls such as Beastie Boysâ Paulâs Boutique, Young MCâs Stone Cold Rhyminâ, Queen Latifahâs  All Hail The Queen, 3rd Bassâs The Cactus AlbumâŠ.the list goes on. Londonâs Mixmaster supreme DJ Yoda even agrees with me on this!
Agreed, as DJ Yoda mentioned, there would definitely be some degree of personal nostalgia, vis-Ă -vis the albums which saw your personal growth and happy memories, but also the longevity of these album releases, as well as significance at the time. Latifahâs giant step for women in hip-hop, musicâs expansion to new land and social equality through the softer messages of new types of rapping, following the domination of âGangsta Rapâ and political bravery in the previous few years.
One massive encounter in connection with this brand of music â was seeing the DMC Technics DJ Mixing Championship for the first time, on the television. Despite it not becoming my selected style of mixing material years later, this is where it all started for me. Cutmaster Swift was the first non-American to win the title, but it was the imprint on my mind of analogue mixing brilliance which pushed me further into records â and what can be done with them.
At the time of this all happening, a new wave of music had begun. One of which I may have seen snippets on Top Of The Pops via certain tracks â in fact one which is now on my wall, after it was number 1 in the charts that year. Lâil Louisâs French Kiss sounded like an excuse for ârudiesâ in a song to a fourteen-year-old heathen sheltered lad. After listening to Ice-T and especially Public Enemyâs Fight The Power â rebellion at the time for me was listening to lots of wise uprising, occasionally violent lyrics with lots of swearing and lots of putting White American policies to the ethical sword. It was five years later I caught the club-bug - and discovered House Music properly. But in 1989, it was blowing up as a scene. The effects of raves in Britain and the USA, not to mention the early stages of the club DJ superstar was catching headlines, being targeted by police and the tabloid press â with a late-eighties revamp of punkâs rebellious anti-establishment stance via electronic music and the drug Ecstasy. It was such a big year on so many levels.
Finally, in other news â letâs have a look at what quirky little differences or nuances our kids would be baffled by â or at least raising eyebrows towards. In 1989, Madonna released the highly-anticipated, then controversial âLike A Prayerâ video (for depicting Jesus as a person of colour) via a Pepsi commercial when we only had four TV channels in Britain. Now, we anticipate when she will finally call it a day. Itâs not as if the royalties dried up a few years ago, is it?
Adverts were good. I rest my case (click on link).

Dear Generations Y and Z, there is a reason these garments have not been worn for over twenty-five years. This is called ânot being a chav or boganâ. I hope you can understand why it would be dangerous to revisit this abhorrent get-up.
To close â in 1989, Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, or what we now know as the Internet. You wouldnât be reading this now without it.
 Cheers.
