as someone who kins both psychologically, in a past life sense, and ultimately because it's fun and makes me happy: I feel like a lot of otherkin and therians take themselves way too damn seriously. who cares if some people use kin as a coping method or for fun without having any actual past life or psychological influence? they're just chilling out, having a good time. just because you're miserable about not having frog legs doesn't mean that Riley age 15 who kins a Battletoad for fun should be treated like some sort of lesser life form for doing something completely harmless that makes their life a little more whimsical.
learn to stop weaponizing your misery and insecurities against others and just let people do harmless fun things goddamn
—a cyborg alterhuman who is so tired of kin community toxicity and gatekeeping
Hey there. I can, in a sense, understand where youre coming from. But i would like you to perhaps read these two posts about why some of us are upset about Kin For Fun (and some of the language they use)
Post one
Post two
The community has a long history with a lot of definitions and an identity which we care for deeply. Many of us only want to protect that, though i know some people can go too far we hope it's not the majority.
Also, here is a list of alternatives to KFF usage of terms

'I kin x' is less clunky linguistically and we need to stop assuming people are kff just because they use kin as a verb. Its a very natural way to say it and I struggle to phrase it in other ways. In general people need to stop assuming that red flags for kff (such as kin as a verb, and ranking how much they feel their kintypes, saying kinnie) and assuming they definitely are kff. Languages and practices started by kff have been picked up by genuine otherkin especially younger ones who come into the community and dont know how to tell otherkin from kff. They still identify as their kintypes even if they copy kff practices.
People dont come into the community with a community history degree.

"how to spot a fake therian!" how about instead of hunting down "fake therians" you acknowledge that targeting random people online because you don't like how they act is not going to benefit or help anyone and in the grand scheme of things you should just let people live

alterhuman vs Kin for fun discourse is so annoying like you will not die because someone said they kin princess bubblegum or some shit. I've been in the therian community for 10 years and genuinely have never been threatened by a kff person. Yall just like to make up problems and attack children for having fun.

See, I hold back when I write. It could be far angstier than it is. I could be handing out forehead kisses left and right. Forehead kisses as someone cries and bleeds after a battle. Delirious from blood loss and pain and needing reassurance. Forehead kisses when they know their squadmate is going to die. A parting gift. One last way to comfort them, to remind them they’re loved.
I’m just saying I could make things more painful than they already are.

This is something that has worried me in the past so prehaps it may help someone else to hear too: You cannot accidentally be KFF. It's literally not possible. Kin-for-fun is a specific online subculture with their own terminology, behaviors, and expectations united by the fact they're ""kinning"" stuff because they just want to fuck around online and make jokes, and don't mean thier connection to or with their "kins" in any genuinely introspective way. If you are genuinely interested in the topic AT ALL you're not KFF even if you can't produce masterpiece essays about yourself. Even if you can't easily slot yourself into a label. Even if figuring yourself out takes a while. There's no time limit.

We do think the alterhuman/nonhuman/otherkin communities are too rigid with terminology sometimes, in that the lines between a kintype and a link or a hearttype and a cameoshift or a hundred other things can be blurry. If someone chooses to identify as an animal and is more comfortable calling it kin than linking I don't care, I'm technically constelic but I hate the label for myself. Using the words that you feel best describe an experience as complex as alterhumanity/nonhumanity has never been the problem. We only get mad when people start saying they kin something when they don't identify as it, because that group has led to so fucking many misunderstandings and problems for all alterhumans. I really wish they would listen when I explained this to them but even a few of our friends have just outright said they don't care.

Recently the Ork Big Mek with Kustom Force Field passed into legend (which means there are legacy rules for him but he isn't officially supported anymore). I had an extra Mek with KFF sitting in a blister pack from maybe 10 years ago so I decided it was time to show him some love.
I had plenty of big goofy guns left over from making counts-as Tau battlesuits, so I decided to give him some new bitz and gubbins to play with.
Behold the Big Mek with Shock Attack Gun:
The paint job is a little sloppy but I know my limits for now. I like how the base turned out. The wire connecting the gun to the backpack might not survive much longer, it has already broken and been repaired twice.
The gun itself came from a Frame Arms Girl accessory pack I snagged at a puramo shop in the city.

I know a lot of ppl will disagree with me, but I don't actually have a problem with people who kin for fun
I mean, we didn't actually invent the word kin, it's been used for thousands of years before us to mean related to or associated with, so I don't really see the problem of an entirely different group using it in a different way.
Yes, I hate that most outsiders will assume otherkin and kff are the same thing (but since when did we care about respectability politics), yes I *hate* being called a kinnie, but who are we to police the use of a word we didn't even invent?
They're just having fun, I promise they're not 'making fun" of the otherkin community, I'm sure most of them don't even know what the otherkin community is. Let them be and stop telling people that they cant make kinists
I am posting this solely for potential discussion and i hope understanding of what the otherkin community is actually saying...
What people have experienced from KFF includes ableism and diluted community. It is about people ignoring our history or outright refusing to listen when we be polite. We have given alternatives.
Our experiences differ greatly, we just want to be able to express that without another community going "no you're wrong, youre just delusional"
I have personally seen it happen.
It isn't about owning words, it's about trying to connect to our own community. Language is needed for that.
I am luckily in a decent mood writing this.

It is concerning how often folks offer up otherhearted/otherkith as an alternative to "kin" for KFFs without qualifying that recommendation with anything.
There is an extremely broad range to what KFFs call "kin". A KFF person might be otherhearted, but they could also be a whole bunch of other things instead/in addition. Otherheartedness is not the same as just liking/relating to a character, it's not the same as faceclaiming, it's not the same as RP'ing, it's not the same as 'linking or flickering or being constelic...
If someone asks for alternative phrasing to phrasing that can mean any of those things, with no way of immediately distinguishing which meaning any one person is using, just naming one of them without any sort of elaboration is a bad answer no matter how you slice it.
I worry that the same thing that has happened to "kin" may eventually happen to "otherhearted" as well as a result of that carelessness. Hell, I have already seen someone say otherhearted means the same thing as simply relating to a character.
I know giving properly nuanced answers takes more effort. I know it can be exhausting if you find yourself having to do it over and over, and god knows having to answer the same questions ad infinitum is pretty much a fundamental alterhuman experience. But giving a misleading answer isn't the solution.
