How/where can I get a nice/comfy/fun suit as a UK boob-haver?
I tend to luck out of these things in thrift stores and off the rack (haha. rack) bc I've got used to spotting suits that suit me but my major go to is Joe Browns (especially when they have a sale on), they have free returns within the UK and frequently add new stuff/have big warehouse sales which is how I got my last suit which is emerald green moleskin w bootleg pants and I need to wear it more bc it's sick as hell.
The main thing in finding a not-boob-crushing fit is to make sure you can close the jacket and still be able to move your arms around (the 'give yourself a hug' test). You don't want the jacket rucking up at the back either so get a friend to check you from the back and side. Sometimes this means I have to get a jacket that is too long in the arms or fails the shoulder test (pressing your shoulder up against the wall to see if the suit fits to the shoulder or has bags of space), if these issues are very noticeable I do sometimes get it tailored, which doesn't cost nearly as much as people think and is worth it if you are going to keep and wear the clothing for years to come... don't buy something you won't wear because it doesn't fit, just pay the extra and wear it til it burns! most of the time it's not too bad anyway so I just roll with it, best of luck!

This might be something you would have an opinion on:
A good train game?
Not *simulation* I know Train Simulator exists, but more the high level build a network, plan routes, upgrade engines over time, manage train composition etc.
I'm not super deep into that, to be honest, I haven't updated my trains in video games review website in well over a decade (and it's mostly broken now, I gotta fix some coding there one of these days).
But I can give you some weird answers:
Factorio is not a train game, but it has trains, and the later you go into it, the more trains become an important part of gameplay. Personal play styles will differ, of course, but I love to spend a lot of time tweaking the train network. That said, there's not a lot of depth to the train systems there. No real scheduling, route finding is fully automatic, you can't set up any truly complex stuff (no automatic shunting). For the record, I play with enemies off, except at the moment I don't play at all because Gleba seems too daunting (I'll get around to it one of these days).
I know a lot of people like Transport Tycoon Deluxe and its modern open-source reimplementation OpenTTD. I have never played it and so have no opinion on it.
If you want a really weird answer, "JB BAHN" or "Bahn.exe" is a German (English is also available) 2D rail simulation program that has an utterly bizarre hold on my mind. It's positively ancient, dating back to the 1990s, and older versions still required DOS. The UI still looks like Windows 3.1. The website still uses frames. The graphics aren't retro pixel art, they're genuine old pixel art, looking like someone took the style of a communist illustrated children's lexicon and reproduced it in MS Paintbrush (not Paint, that came later). It's objectively awful… and if I start playing it, I don't stop for thirty hours (average). Part of it is that it's very mechanical, you can spend a lot of time just redoing the same steps over and over. Part of it is the very intricate depth of its scheduling and shunting system. Want to build a classification yard? Want to build a station where the locomotive runs around its train? Want to build a station where the locomotive uncouples and another couples to the train to continue the journey? All possible, with the slight caveat that everything is a massive ordeal. I love this game. Don't play it.
Cities Skylines. The 1 version, not the 2, which I haven't played because it has no Mac version (neither does JB BAHN, I haven't played that in years). The railroad system simulation is entirely surface-level, incredibly janky, part of the traffic system that is even more janky in all its other parts, and there are a lot of obvious missing features, but hey, you can have some fun with it.
I don't think this is helpful but this is the best I got, sorry.

FIRST EVER TRIP TO JB YEY (ノ ˃ˋᗜˊ˂ )ノ 。*゚+
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the logistics of this trip were kinda sus, but i was just so excited to be invited on this trip to a place i've never been before so i didn't rly think much of anything else HAHAH. everything went smoothly though~
day one
took the bus in from kranji mrt station. we managed to clear the customs and enter jb just before 10 am (!! a pleasant surprise bc i always hear about scary traffic jams and custom queues).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
started the trip with brunch at palates & bagels by T.A.M. i got the shiro (tempura fish with wasabi mayo) bagel with sesame bun, and the yuzu sour plum drink. the wasabi mayo wasn't spicy at all, and that's coming from someone who has zero spice tolerance.
the cafe also sold baked pastries and cakes?? i really wanted to try but i didn't want to overload my stomach that early in the day.
after filling our stomachs, we headed over to nine% hair studio for some hair pampering!! while looking up recommendations, i came across someone's review of this salon, and even though they rated the experience as 'mediocre', i was sOLD when i saw how nice their haircut turned out?? it was such a pretty and fluffy hush cut (the hairstyle i was aiming for)!! the aunties at my neighbourhood salon could never!!!
i got a haircut, a dye (just for covering greys bc i didn't want to bleach), and a moisturing treatment for around $300~ the haircut didn't turn out exactly as i'd wanted, but maybe it was bc my hair wasn't long enough?? the layers were layering though, and i became kind of like a jellyfish HAHA. it's still cute so all's good. my hair was also super soft after the treatment ( ˶°ㅁ°) !! i wasn't expecting it to go from crispy hay to boiled vermicelli noodles that quickly. the service was not bad too. we were the only two customers there, so we pretty much got the vip treatment.
also!!! i've never gotten anything other than a cut at a salon before, so this was a brand new ✨experience for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
unfortunately, it started to drizzle almost immediately after we left the salon. the humidity killed the styling in my hair, so i became a soggy jellyfish. ( •᷄‎ࡇ•᷅ )
next stop was to get a massage somewhere in the KSL city mall~ we walked around for quite a bit and eventually settled on thong thai. the reviews (i looked them up hastily) seemed ok?? it was on the pricier side but that meant it was less likely to be sketchy?? idk. i opted for the aromatherapy full body massage, which was basically the usual full-body thai massage, except i gotta strip down and get oiled up LMAO. luwi and alfur tried that in bangkok, and their reviews got me curious so i had to give it a go myself.
it was fine actually??? very professional. i forgot that i couldn't rly clean off the oil afterwards, so the feeling of oil on my clothes was........ not the most pleasant.
when the rain subsided, it was time for dinner!!! we explored the KSL night market that opened only on mondays!! grabbed a bunch of street food to try~ it was difficult deciding what to get bc our stomachs had limited capacity, and everything looked so tasty??
we brought whatever we couldn't finish on the spot back to the hotel for our street food dinner feast~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
after dinner, we went to check out the cafe (space cafe) on the first floor of the hotel we stayed at. i couldn't eat anymore at that point, so we could only try the drinks.
didn't check if it was a halal establishment, but i tasted zero alcohol in that mojito LOL. looked pretty though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we relaxed for a bit back in the hotel, and then i decided........ it was time to check out the hotel's infinity pool. i insisted on taking a swim even though i was hit by a sudden chill in the room??? not sure what happened there but it felt like my homeostatic mechanisms just glitched or something. didn't help that it had just rained, which meant that the nighttime air was gonna be colder than usual.
anyway, i refused to budge on the idea despite the fact that i was shivering uncontrollably all the way to the pool. luckily for me, the pool was hEATED!! ৻( •̀ ᗜ •́ ৻) when i went in, i didn't want to get out. koko didn't swim with me though. he was just chilling on the poolside chairs. no fun!! (ㅎ.ㅎ)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
had da cheng lok lok 大成渌渌 takeaway for supper!!! it was something i rly wanted to try!! and it did not disappoint. the spice levels were beyond my capabilities (not me coughing like an ipad kid with every bite), but the seafoods were so good omg. aND THEY WERE HUGE??? i'm now a loklok fan. i wanna try the non-spicy version next time though.
day two
breakfast buffet at the hotel~ tried not to overeat so my stomach would survive the rest of the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
went to the midvalley mall for the relatively new impulse gaming flagship store!! we were greeted by shelves of blind boxes upon entering the store. the temptation to gamble was too great, and i walked out with two boxes of blind shinwoo plush keychains........... at least one of the boxes (the heavier one that koko picked) gave me the one i wanted (hot sauce!!).
found a gengar model kit with swappable face parts and articulated joints at the same store!! i wanted it so bad but koko said i could get it cheaper elsewhere so i didn't buy it. :/
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we spent a bit too much time exploring the mall, so our lunch was quite late. we originally planned to have lunch at keijometo, a cafe that was trending for its industrial aesthetics. however, the long queue and possibly 3 hour ++ wait time put us off. so, we hopped onto a cab to find lunch near the bagel place that we went to on the first day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there was a cafe there called the replacement, and idk who hurt it, but it was hilariously appropriate given the situation.
got the irreplaceable pasta, which was a tomato-based pasta with tiger prawns. i wasn't expecting this unassuming sauce to be so spicy?? i did my best to finish everything aaa.
we also got a sour cream and onion cromboloni to share~ yums.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
before heading back to sg, we did some last-minute snacks and clothes shopping at city square mall~ then we took the train back and it was so speedy!! like a 5-mins bullet train ride.

Not Fake News Actually (Capricorn One and Fly Me to the Moon)
I'd never heard of Capricorn One - not even through its inadvertently unwholesome link to OJ Simpson //who plays one of the three NASA astronauts caught up in the imagined Mars Landing Conspiracy// nor through the presence of James Brolin //who, in a true generations-passing-under-the-eye-of-God moment, I recognised by his clear resemblance to his son, Josh// [My grandmother, who watched lots of Hollywood movies, would no doubt have been horrified by this, my mother, who despises Hollywood movies - two bio facts that I'll bet are related - is more likely to be horrified that I know who the son is.]
But we watched it earlier in the summer, around the time of its anniversary - see Last Exit To Nowhere post - and having discounted for how pervasive the 70s look and feel is, really enjoyed it.
Not sure what it says about me that I enjoyed it most once the astronauts were in true run-for-your-lives jeopardy. (And, back to the younger JB, I'm sure it's in no way coincidental that I felt The Same Way about similarly space-ish and desert-y Dune... much more fun once we were out of the "cultural exchange" moments with the Fremen and into the War And Vengeance Against The Harkonnen.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In news that surprises no-one who has logged onto the internet this century, footage from the movie has been commandeered to support dodgy Moon Landings Were Faked video "reportage". And you can see why - even with the 70s aesthetic (erm, or, more likely, because of it?) that looks compellingly like a decent fake Mars landing filmset.
Also amused me to come across the following review of Fly Me To The Moon (storyline - what if super-seller Scarlet Johannson were blackmailed into helping to create fake Moon Landing footage, you know, just to be on the safe side in case something Went Wrong...)
Basically MK spends maybe half of the review time making the point that he truly, madly deeply believes that the Moon Landings happened and that his relative enjoyment of the movie (nice period aesthetic and delivering fluffy romcom fun) is not a disguised signal that he in any way believes otherwise. Capricorn One gets a mention.
Also: I now want to watch this movie.

Laptop on rent in Chennai
High-standard Laptop Rental and IT Hardware Solutions
Today, with the global economy in such a slump, sometimes it seems easier to rent the things you need than to buy them outright. After all, the weekly or monthly payments seem pretty small. After the pandemic, jobs seem very fragile. Therefore, it becomes difficult to make large investments in computer products. Rental services seem attractive in the case of Laptops and IT accessories.
Laptop for rent in Chennai plans can benefit customers with less credit and just short of enough cash to make a purchase. Most of the time, it's super simple to walk into a rental store and negotiate terms that can fit your specified budget and go away with the latest laptop.
Advantages for Businesses in Hiring Laptop on Rent
Reviewing laptop rental deals can be extremely helpful for businesses that need computers for short-term projects. Instead of buying a new set of laptops that will no longer be needed after the completion of the project, companies can save even more if they rent laptops. It will also save you from worrying about what to do with laptops when they are no longer needed.
Technology changes every year, whether you like it or not. The new computer you bought last week will be obsolete in a year or two, and here the purchase of anything is endless if you always want something new. The main thing is to understand and use the latest technology. Therefore, it's wise to rent a new laptop with the fewest features to get the job done so you don't have to pay extra to buy a new laptop.
Low-debt Burden-If you are an organization looking to reduce debt, laptop rental is one of the methods to do it. This will make your balance sheet look better to outsiders and improve your chances of securing an acquisition, which will help your business grow.
JB Computers provides top-notch laptopfor rent in Chennai, including IT & Networking equipment services since its inception in 2005.JB Computers provides turnkey IT equipment rental solutions. It understands the real-time needs of the IT industry, so it maintains high service standards and short response times. Not only does it offer the luxury of the best hardware, but it also offers flexibility with rental options.

Federal Operator 99 review
“Sophistication” isn’t a word one hears applied to serials very often.  Federal Operator 99 aims for sophistication and surprisingly hits the mark more often than not.
It’s not a uniformly smooth attempt and the rough spots are noticeable, but for the least expensive of Republic’s three serials in 1945 (and lordy, were Manhunt Of Mystery Island and The Purple Monster Strikes inexpensive!) Federal Operator 99 is solid entertainment.
Let’s start with the script, often the least sophisticated element of a serial. This time instead of Wild West adventures or sci-fi thrills Republic writers Albert DeMond, Basil Dickey, Jesse Duffy, and Joseph Poland under the guidance of studio story editor Ronald Davidson focused instead on a very human scale criminal enterprise, led by a colorful / complex / conflicted crime lord, Jim Belmont (George J. Lewis) with a penchant for fine art and piano concertos.
Belmont is no typical Republic supervillain but a very human — albeit murderously eccentric — criminal. All of his plots are plausible and doable. Conquer the world? Hell, no.  Steal jewels then double cross when paid a ransom?  Oh, yeah.
That alone is a refreshing change of pace for a serial of this era.
His opposite number is our eponymous Federal Operator 99, Jerry Blake (Marten Lamont).  Serial leads (other than costumed heroes) tend to be played as just regular folks; the audience appeal is that we like to think we would be just as heroic under similar circumstances.
99, in contrast, is presented as debonair and dashing, super competent and equally as cunning as his quarry, and speaking with a faint English accent.  It’s not much of an exaggeration to say he’s a prototype of another JB with a number:  007.
And speaking of JBs, notice how both hero and villain share the same initials as well as equal expertise in their respective fields, and a taste for the finer things in life. “Avoid giving your characters similar names” is one of the fundamental rules of genre fiction, and for Davidson’s tribe of scribes to give both the same initials indicates they were quite consciously trying to link the two on some level.
One of the best things about this serial is 99 is not a reactive hero, waiting for Belmont to strike so he can pursue him, but is actively trying to trick Belmont and lure him out into the open where Blake’s team can arrest him.
Despite this, Lamont comes across as a rather lacklustre leading man, while Lewis’ screen charisma is so strong we’re disconcerted to find ourselves actually rooting for him at numerous points in the story! Republic missed a bet by not swapping their two leads; it would have made for a far more dynamic story line.
The script doesn’t help much, either.  While it’s always hard to tell who wrote what parts of any serial, one of the writers here clearly had a much better grasp on what they were trying to achieve and it reflects in good dialog and strong scenes.
Other writers give us the equivalent of juvenilia with their unimaginative flat declarative sentences, the single biggest drawback of this serial.
While she ended up a Republic Western heroine under both this name and Adriana Booth, Lorna Gray as Rita Parker is two lethal steps up from the typical supporting villainess.  She’s not decorative arm candy but a willing and ready partner to Belmont’s crimes.
Of her counterpart among the good guys, let’s be generous and say Helen Talbot as Joyce Kingston is fetchingly cute and enunciates all her lines quite clearly. It’s not uncommon for serial stars, especially the ladies, to be tied up at some point in the proceedings but Ms Talbot is restrained so often and in such a wide variety that it’s clear somebody in the production had an affinity for this sort of thing.  She also spends an inordinate amount of time being driven about in the trunk of various automobiles.
You do the best with what you’ve got and I’ll leave it to the reader to decide if this applies to Ms Talbot or the production.
The automobiles bring up an interesting point re Federal Operator 99’s meager budget. The serial uses a lot of stock footage and to disguise the fact some of it is well over a decade old, the script draws attention to certain cars being earlier models and not the more contemporary ones seen elsewhere.
Likewise, nobody changes clothes unless it’s to match stock footage; this is especially noticeable for Gray and Talbot.
Federal Operator 99 has a very lean look to it, past the opening chapters (typically used to sell the serial to theaters) there’s never more than four characters on camera at any time. Those familiar with Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley will spot many landmarks and familiar streets. The production does enjoy a bigger feel than other Republic serials of the era, and I think this is because they managed to use a number of sets left standing after feature films finished production.
Where the serial really shines is in the direction. As typical of the era, more than one director handled that chore.  Usually studios had one director for dialog scenes and another for action, or one for interiors and another for exteriors, but Federal Operator 99 has three (!):  Wallace Grissell, a film editor who became a director presumably because he knew how to intercut stock footage well; the legendary Spencer Gordon Bennet, who directed more serials than anyone; and Yakima “Just stay in the chariot and we’ll see you win the race, Chuck” Canutt, who handled the action scenes and boy, howdy! did somebody make the right call there!  Federal Operator 99 is crammed with chair splintering / table flipping action from crotch to sternum, Canutt’s philosophy being no self respecting hero should ever walk through a door when he can dive headfirst through a window, gun blazing.
If I didn’t know better, I’d think chapter four was originally shot in 3D based on the amazing number of objects and human bodies Canutt sends hurtling straight at the camera.
The cliffhangers are good, better than most comparable serials, and there’s nary a cheater in the bunch. The Lydecker brothers round things off with a superlative display of exploding miniatures.
Serials are noted for their casual use of violence, but Federal Operator 99 is significantly more gruesome than most. 99 meets Kingston elaborately bound and gagged in a closet, no less — right after shooting and killing one of Belmont’s men; the two then have a cheery conversation about what to do next despite the fact there’s a corpse laying literally at their feet!  Various underlings and innocent bystanders get shot in the back or stomach, Belmont is freed in an expertly staged train rescue where a cohort as an afterthought casually shoots and kills the escorting agent, a woman screams off camera as Parker tortures her with a cigarette lighter, a criminal dies twitching under a hail of bullets, one bloodied mortally wounded minion takes a minute to heroically crawl to a detonator because how else are we going to get a satisfying Lydecker ka-boom?, and Belmont himself makes his on camera hard goodbye by plunging four stories to solid concrete.
The gruesomeness brings up two plot points that raise questions for me:  First Belmont has a phone conversation with an unseen spy in Washington then discusses with his cohorts the spy by name and how vital he is to their organization…and we never reference said spy again; next Belmont mentions four members of his former partner‘s gang by their names, gives a brief run down on each, mentions how they might know where the hidden loot from a bullion robbery is…and in the next cut Blake is reading a newspaper story about how the four were brutally tortured and mutilated before being executed gangland style.
Say wha — ?  I’m guessing Federal Operator 99 was originally conceived as a 15 chapter serial only to be truncated to 12 in preproduction (Manhunt Of Mystery Island and The Purple Monster Strikes were Republic’s last two 15 chapter serials, everything after that was either 12 or 13 chapters). Rather than waste more time and money rewriting the script, they just whacked out three chapters worth of material but didn’t change the dialog.
The gruesomeness of Federal Operator 99, and its more realistic scale and script make me wonder if it didn’t start life as a development for a Dick Tracy or Rex Barton serial; the format certainly fits both.
Not the best serial Republic ever made, but better than most.

Review Roundup - Week 2 January 2018
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hello loves!! My name is Jace (aka Felicity B), and this is your Review Roundup for the second week of January 2018!! I can't really tell if I liked this week in music better than I did last week. There's a better variety songs, at least.
youtube
Beware (Stray Kids)
I really wanna like these kids, because it's obvious af that JYP does not.
But.
Nothing they've released has really been up my alley. Beware (I realize that the actual name of the song is GRRR Total Law of Madness, but sis...) sounds like a better produced version of Wolf, and you'd think that was a good thing because Wolf was a poorly produced mess. But this song takes itself so fucking seriously. It's not terrible, but it's not something I really want to listen to again.
I don't get JYP's angle with this group. First, there was the survival show that wasn't really a survival show (which I'm glad, because I fucking hate actual survival shows). And before that was Hellevator, another overly serious song that makes me roll my eyes. And now this. I really don't wanna be a dick because this is their second release and they're teenagers, but I'm not a fan of being growled at by a bunch of high schoolers and then having my ears assaulted by nasal singing (because, of course, their vocalists sound like they're trained by the same people who trained JB). It's not a fun experience.
Do betta, JYP.
Rating - 1/5
Going Going (Jang Wooyoung)
Oh look, it's another JYP act with a bad song!!
Okay, the song isn't that bad, but there's not enough positives for me to overlook the negatives. Of which there are many.
Firstly, this an uptempo that drags; I literally could not wait for the new section to begin, because I was ready for the last one to end. And this is New Jack Swing, baby. My black ass fucking loves New Jack Swing (yes, even The Boys). But I could give you an entire playlist of K-Pop songs in the style of NJS that are W A Y better than this.
Secondly, Wooyoung doesn't sound particularly good singing on top of it. The rap bits were the best parts of the song, for me. Which is about 90% not his fault, because whoever was on vocal production duties was slacking. His voice sounds like dude dropped them on the beat, adjusted the levels a lil bit, added some reverb to sound like he actually did his job, and went tf home.
Tragique.
Thirdly, the arrangement of this song is weird af. What do I mean by that?!?! There are two choruses. Yes honey, you read that correctly - two choruses. The song starts out with a section you'd assume is the chorus, but when you get to the second chorus, it's something completely different. In fact, you don't hear this first "chorus" till the end of the song again (which, in hindsight, I'm glad you only hear it twice, because the lyrics make me roll my eyes so hard and the vocal melody has the weirdest rhythm pattern). I guess that's not too weird when I write it out, but it majorly throws you off when you hear it play out in the song. For me, anyway. Which is surprising, because Red Light and I Got A Boy are All Time Faves™ of mine (with Oh! being a runner up). But I guess I just don't like it here.
#PickyBitch
And since we're on the subject of the arrangement... WHY ARE THESE TRANSITIONS SO FUCKING LONG?!?!?!!?! SIS, THE TRANSITIONS BETWEEN SECTIONS DON'T NEED TO BE 10 FUCKING SECONDS LONG!!! THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE!!
Once again - Do betta, JYP.
Rating - 2/5
Don't Leaves (Block B)
And here come the ballads!! We're not mad at it, tho.
We all knew what kind of ballad Don't Leave Me was gonna be. More of a midtempo than an actual ballad, Don't Leave Me sounds a bit like a B1A4 or Seventeen song, but with Block B's track record as of late, we're not gonna dock points for that. Don't Leave Me starts out with a filtered percussion section that they unfilter for about 2.75 seconds before getting into the verse, almost as if they're reassuring us that they haven't gonna completely left of center with this ballad. Which is nice, because it creates a nice transition (not the word I'm working for, but you get what I mean) into the verse. And from there, they layer in more elements to create a nice backdrop for Block B's vocalists to actually show us what they can do.
Because God knows Shall We Dance was literally Zico and the boys. It was fucking ridiculous.
From the teasers, I thought I was gonna hate this (or be extremely apathetic to it ) but I should've known better. These B1A4 style/YG template ballads always get me, sooner or later (*WINN4R cackling as Fool plays in the background*). This isn't something I'm gonna put into Heavy Rotation (because God only knows my hyperempathetic ass doesn't need another reason to randomly be thrust into a depressive episode), but I wouldn't relegate this to Shuffle Bait.
Especially with Zico and P.O sounding as good as they do here. Granted, Zico sings half his verse and P.O doesn't rap at all, but you gotta take those small victories where you can find them. And they have really nice singing voices, too.
Rating - 4/5
The girl from back then (LONG:D)
This, however, is a ballad that's going right into Shuffle Bait. If I even download it, at all.
Where is the LONG:D that gave me All Night, sis?!?!?! The intro literally sounds like the Sad Piano Music™ that Youtubers download en masse from those royalty free music sites. Like, I was literally tempted to skip this release all together, but I rather like the way LONG:D's vocalist sounds (if Baekhyun was a properly trained and a baritone who actually needed all that chestiness in his mix, with a dash of Kang Seung Yoon's rasp).
The girl from back then sounds like a more generic version of Seventeen's Campfire. It's not what I'd consider a classical ballad (has too much going on), but it's just as boring as one. On repeat listens, the Gospel influences (however faint they are) did grow on me, but I can't even see myself wanting to listen to this when I'm in the mood for downtempo ballads. LONG:D's voice puts this into Shuffle Bait, but just barely.
It's too anybody of a ballad, sis.
Rating - 2.5/5
Tell Me (INFINITE)
Dongwoo's demonic ass starting this song with a whispered "Anywhere, Anytime" should have prepared me for how catchy this fucking song was gonna be.
Tell Me, like Wooyoung's Going Going, starts off with the chorus. But instead of giving us two different choruses when no one needed that in their life, it makes a very typical pop song sound a lot more interesting than it actually is.
Now... What Tell Me's composers/producers did isn't original by any stretch of the imagination. I know it seems a little counterproductive to mention this before I explain what they did (and why it's so cool), but I just know someone is going to try me on this.
So.
Tell Me (after Dongwoo terrorizes us with the raspiness in his voice) starts with the chorus, but a very stripped back and simplistic version of it. If you're not paying attention (which I might not have been the first time I listened), you could easily mistake it for the verse. That surprised me, because composers/producers don't usually start out their songs with the chorus being sung, if they have the chorus first; they usually play the chorus melody using some kind of instrument that sounds important (like Orange Caremel's Magic Girl, for example). Tthey'll also usually have it going at full intensity, so when it switches to the verse it's very obvious that what you just experienced was the chorus (since that's usually the most important aspect of the song in pop music).
So yeah, nothing too left field, just an interesting twist on an oft used formula.
Outside of that, this song is a very typical INFINITE title track. Very intensity, much dramas. Which I don't hate, because they're one of three groups in K-Pop who can do a song like this, and not bore me to death.
Rating - 4.5/5
Secret Garden (Oh My Girl)
Secret Garden is Orchestral Pop. It's not just typical, it's cliche af. Even IU, circa 2010, wouldn't have touched this with a 10ft pole.
But God save us all, I really like this song. And it's not even that I'm OMG trash (their anti-South Asian foolery during Windy Day era, combined with my general disinterest with anything they've done since then, stopped that right in it's track), but that chorus melody, sis. It's just so G O O D!! That, combined with the sweet, almost milk chocolatey texture of the instrumentation makes me feel like I'm floating. And you know what, 2018 is all about me livin my best Gife™ (Gay Life), but it's also about me being self-indulgant and liking what I like, no guilt attached.
I will say that I wish that this song had more live instrumentation in it. Those strings are definitely synth generated, and it's kind of distractingly obvious. The percussion is also too heavy for this type of song. It feels like I'm listening to a demo that OMG's company decided to send to a mastering house and release, cause they couldn't be fucked to work on the song anymore. It doesn't ruin it for me, but I can't help but notice these things.
Rating - 3/5
Glow (Choi Jaemin featuring EZ KIM)
Glow is a Sad™ song for Sad Days™. This is a song that throws down a blanket of it's angst and just revels in it. And while that isn't something I'm trying to listen to On The Daily™, I can save this for for those really bad days I just need to cry out those ugly emotions.
Contrary to what I said about Secret Garden, Glow is a song I felt like could have been beefed up by some electronic elements. The bass could have been thickened up in post, because it feels too limp for a song like this. Hell, they could added a low af ass sine bass to sumplement the bassist, and I wouldn't have minded. Overall, the production of this song is very loose. And I get that super tight production in an emotive song like this would have bleached out all the emotion, but more could have been done to tighten up how the elements don't really blend together. Especially the vocalists. They don't really fit together like they should, and I guess that kind of enhances the experience since this song feels like one long ass disonant chord, but still.
Teenage me would have played this song to death. Which makes me glad that I'm not that person anymore.

Lonely (Jo Kwon)
See... I wanted to be petty, and just post his dance videos with Lia Kim, but we're trying to be a better person in 2018.
This is a really nice ballad. Not something I'd put on Heavy Rotation (i feel like a fucking broken record), but if he H A D to do a classical ballad, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I'd have preferred a ballad like his duet with Gain, Q&A, but it was nice of Mr Kwon to remind us plebians that while he is a Dancing Diva™, he did get his start as a ballad singer.
I'm gonna need him to throw it back to his Animal days for the next release, tho. This was nice and all, but I need to see him featuring in Hyuna's next comeback with those shiny red boots and a trope of male dancers.
Also in red heels.

Candy Pop! (TWICE)
Firstly, can I just say that TWICE's Japanese team are R E AL L Y giving these girls the push to be huge, because this video is ridiculously high budget. That is the best animation I've seen in a J-Pop music video. And I used to be a huge J-Pop stan before I got into K-Pop.
Secondly, whoever put that pink monstrosity on my girl, Sana, needs to be fired. I just can't, sis.
Do betta, JYP.
Lots of people are not a fan of Candy Pop, and I can't lie - that's partially why I like it so much. I will admit that I'm a sucker for cutesy pop tracks like these, but I'm also a petty bitch who's no stranger to loudly stanning TWICE because people want to talk shit out the side of their mouths about their supposed lack of talent.
News flash Marleigh/Zeno - the concept of talent in K-Pop literally doesn't fucking matter, because your level of talent does not dictate the kind of music you produce. Groups like SPICA and Mamawhomst Mamamoo have songs that vary wildly in quality, because some of the people they've worked with get lazy af when they work with vocal groups.
Anyway, Candy Pop will do just fine in Japan, because TWICE already have a sizable following there and it fits within the sonic landscape. It also has some pretty cool musical twists, like a halftime break for a post-chorus refrain. I definitely like One More Time better (Candy Pop can get aurally tiring pretty quickly because of that chorus, which is why that post-chorus breakdown is appreciated), but Candy Pop is pretty great, too.

Spotlight (MONSTA X)
Monsta X may have revisited their debut sound, but I don't want to stab them all for it. It's a Christmas miracle!!
Spotlight is Monsta X doin' what Monsta X does best - intense trapstep uptempos with choreography to match. The difference between something like this and Trespass (*shudder*) is that they're taking themselves W A Y less seriously. They look like they're having fun ruining our lives with how hot they are, and even though Spotlight isn't something I'd describe as ~fun~, that still translates to the music.
Spotlight was quite the surprise for me when Universal Japan dropped the video on us. Mostly because it was a Japanese release with a full MV on Youtube (don't look at me like that, Japanese companies are allergic to digital releases actually making sense), but also because I had no idea MX was in Japan.
Spotlight is a banger. It brings me joy to see MX showing their sons how to make music like this and not be absolutely boring or pretentious af. This song is definitely going on Heavy Rotation.

Stagger (Cheetah)
This song makes me extremely uncomfortable.
And I get that that was the point, with the video featuring Cheetah in various states of intoxication, but... God, I just feel so fucking unsettled anytime I listen to this song. It feels Wrong™. I get the concept (it's actually pretty cool), but you can't just be outchea makin' songs that no one wants to listen to more than once. That makes no sense, sis.
How does one even describe this song?!?!?! First, there's that horn (I think) sample that has been manipulated to all fuck. There's no way in hell they just copy n pasted that from somewhere with it sounding like that. That's like the base of the song. And then you've got that stilted drum machine patterns, combined with parts of the song playing in reverse. Cheetah almost doesn't fit in this song with how sharp her rapping is, but it works (I guess), because it adds to the disonant atmosphere of the track.
I'm here for artistry and experimentation in popular music circles, but can we make songs that people can actually, you know... LISTEN TO?!?!?!?!?!?
I will say that I'm here for the preview she showed at the end of the video, tho. Ma'am outchea givin us High Fashion Butch™ with a tropical beat, and my wig was instantly in tatters.

20th Century (V.E.I.L)
Idk who V.E.I.L is, but I love this song.
The quickest way to get me into your band is to give me New Wave. Or NuDisco. Or Deep House. Or Lo Fi Electronica (like 20th Century). To be honest, you could give me any number of throwbacks to the '80s or '90s, and I'd fucking love you.
But that's neither here nor there.
20th Century is a fun af song, and I wonder when this became such an oddity in K-Pop. Companies these days (as well as stans) are obsessed with perfection in their groups, at the cost of personality. And granted, it's always kind of been this way, but it's at an all time high these days. Every group performs like a well oiled machine. Which is great. But they look like robots. And with the music these agencies give their groups, it's not a pleasant experience. Very rarely is a terrible one, but at least when it's bad, it registers a reaction.
Anyway, 20th Century sounds like something I'd expect from the Polysics (now that's a throwback to my weeb days, if I've ever seen one), but more on the electronic side. It's got that same Lo Fi/'90s feel to it, but it's dressed up in '80s synthpop. Which is never a bad thing. A part of me almost wonders what this song would be like if an idol group promoted it, but she quickly hushes up when my logical side reminds her an idol group would never promote anything with production this Lo Fi.
I mean, there's TAHITI's Tonight, but sis... Let's not kick 9muses 2.0 while they're down.

Butterfly (Weki Meki)
Fascinating how Weki Meki had to have their comeback delayed because of trouble with a shareholder, but they were able to push out this song for the Winter Olympics.
But I'm sleep, tho.
Weki Meki's Butterfly is a cover of the 2009 OST for the film Take Off, originally by Loveholics. Weki Meki's cover was released in honour of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Um... I like Weki Meki's cover more than the original.
Weki Meki's cover is in the style of synthpop, and that fits the chord progressions and song structure a lot more than the pop/rock arrangement of the original. It also brings out the nostalgic vibes of the song, because these types of chord progressions were used very heavily in the '80s/'90s. After listening to Weki Meki's cover, the original just sounds flat and poorly produced. Which I mean, K-Pop didn't really have good production till about 2013/2014.
So.
The video linked above doesn't feature the full song, so here's a lyrics video that does.

Electric Kiss (EXO)
Yes, I do realize this song has been floating around the EXOnet since around November, but I haven't seen an official release featuring the full song till this dance practice. And I've been wanting to cover this forever.
You guys, tell me why I thought EXO was really about to throw some 5th Harmony/BO$$ type shit down with that intro?!!?! I really thought I was about to get EXO outchea, flexin' on these heauxs, but maybe we aren't ready for alladat. Lordt knows the way EXO L reacted to Lotto shows it.
But that's neither here nor there, sis. What matters is how amazing Electric Kiss is. She starts out strong with heavy brass stabs and an even heavier drum beat, and only builds from there. Miss Kiss is not playin' games with us, ladies. She might not have been the BO$$ style flex that I thought she was gonna be, but that doesn't mean she's a slouch, neither.
When teasers for a Japanese EXO album turned up on SM's YT channel (which makes no fucking sense, but okay, girl), I was iffy. With singles out like Love Me Right ~romantic universe~ (as if adding a subtitle would make that song any better) and Coming Home, I was not hopeful. But Electric Kiss bangs harder than anything EXO has released since Call Me Baby. I never would have expected a Japanese EXO campaign to net me music this good with how bad their Japanese singles have are, but I really should've known better. EXO has always thrown down when it comes to the music, and Electric Kiss is a certified B A N G E R!!
I was tempted to put this in the Fabulous Five, but the songs there deserve to be, so...

Refresh (TSUN featuring YUMADA)
So I see y'all just gon' hit me with the a sexier version of Blah!??!?!?! We really doin' that, sis?!?!?!
Alright, sis... Don't be mad when you see these rough ass body rolls.
Refresh, like I mentioned above, is a sexier version of Planetarium's Blah. It's the same kind Tropic/RnB hybrid arrangement, but the instrumentation is more Tropical than RnB. Miss TSUN's singing definitely gives Refresh an RnB vibe, tho. The production here is a little loose, but it's not too glaring obvious.

The Fabulous Five
5. Timeless (Jaehyun, Doyoung, and Taeil of NCT U)
youtube
Firstly, I need someone to tell me what song this sounds like, because it's been bothering me since release. These chords sound vaguely familar to me, I just can't tell what song Timeless shares them with.
Moving on.
When SM annouced that the NCT U Trio were making a comeback with a ballad for SM Station, I was not pleased. Station ballads are notorious for being lackluster af, and I was annoyed that SM really wanted this to be the song that followed Lower.
This is me eating my words.
I'm a little blown away at how amazing this turned out. NCT is a "group" (if you can even call them that) that has always come as more machine than man, so a ballad release (especially a Station ballad release) is the opposite of what I wanted from them. But they sound so raw and vulnerable here, it's a little heartbreaking.
Doyoung, Taeil, and Jaehyun are all very nice vocalists, but it is clear that Taeil is the main vocal of this unit, sis. Like... A bitch really started tearing up during his parts!! Doyoung and Jaehyun have the technical skill, but Taeil was really outchea singin' for his life!! And his belts are so nice?!?!? Fuck... He's really giving Taeyong a run for his money as my NCT bias, and I don't need this.
I can see why they wanted to do a live video here - K-Pop producers have a tendency to overdo the vocal production when doing studio recordings. And while that results in perfect vocals, it comes at the cost of any emotion or integrity in the vocal performance. And for an artform like K-Pop where the ability to emote isn't high up on the list of requirements for idols, that's a big fucking deal. Especially when ballads are usually used as more of a way to show off vocal ability than what they're supposed to. Which is kind of ironic, considering most main/lead vocalists have shit technique, and are usually picked for their ability to belt really powerfully (read - holler real loud).
I definitely would not have liked this if it was studio recorded. Yes, they're recording this *in* a studio (them vocals is too clean, sis), but... Y'all know what the fuck I mean!!

4. Full Moon (Dreamcatcher)
youtube
Dreamcatcher said in a recent interview that they do enjoy their sound, and most of the members (literally everyone except one; and even then, she just wanted to branch out a lil) would like if they could go darker. So I guess this is their agency honoring that.
Full Moon is a very typical Dreamcatcher song (which makes sense, since this is their anniversary release) with symphonic elements mixed within a heavy rock backdrop, which gives off the vibe of heavier J-rock and VISUAL KEI songs. And you wouldn't think that would make for a very pop friendly song, but their composers/producers use very pop-friendly chord progressions and song arrangements. Add in the members of Dreamcatcher (who have voices that are very suited to pop music), and you have a formula that shouldn't work. But it does.
It works, oh so well.
The video linked above doesn't feature the full song (I'm guessing they're gonna release the full video with their March comeback, because the song is already out in full), so here's their performance at their fan meeting that does.

3. I'm all ears (Kim Taeyeon)
youtube
I'm all ears is a song from Taeyeon's Christmas album (which I might have downloaded, but never listened to). I'm guessing the video release is a gift to the fans type dealio, because she's not promoting it.
I find it interesting that I'm all ears was included on a Christmas themed album, because it feels springy. In fact, this song almost feels like Taeyeon heard Jessica's Because It's Spring, and decided that she wanted to make her own version. Which I'm cool with, because I like I'm all ears better. I like when Taeyeon gives us light and airy. Beltyeon is annoying, because her belts sound pinched and nasal. And Taeyeon relies on them far too much to cover up the fact that she can't emote very well with her voice.
But this is good.
I'm definitely putting this song on Heavy Rotation. I know, #Shocking. But if anyone peeped how I was fawned over Twenty Something from last week's list, it really shouldn't be that surprising.
Rating - 5/5
2. Love You (Eom Ji Hee)
youtube
Now this is a real throwback to my youth days (don't ask, I'm not about to become That Kind™ of blog).
There's something so... Nice™ about hearing something this raw and unmastered, especially since we're so used to hearing such high production values in K-Pop. And I know I've clocked other songs on these lists for having loose production, but the difference is that this is SUPPOSED to be low production; this is literally a girl singing with her backing band with a camera on. I could point out all the things "wrong" here, but they don't really take away from the performance. The songs I've clocked for being low production, however, were studio recorded affairs that missed the mark. And granted, not everyone can afford to send their shit to a professional mastering house, but it's not hard to get harmonies to sit nicely in the mix.
Anyway, this is another song that sounds real familiar (I'm pretty sure this is a cover, because even the vocal melody sounded familar, and that's a big fuckin no no), but it sounded real nice. This is musics I'm trynna listen to on good days when I can't sleep. The video is even perfect for it, with it's starry projection on the band!!

1. Diamond Girl (MxM BRANDNEWBOYS)
youtube
Remember how I said you could give me any kind of throwback to the '80s and/or '90s, and I'd be happy?!?!?!
Diamond Girl is exactly what I'm talking about.
Diamond Girl is a funky n (most importantly) fun throwback to the '90s (with a little bit of '80s synth work thrown on top for good measure). The bass work is a highlight for me, and that damn "my diamond girl" hook won't leave me the fuck alone. That, and the "treat you like a gentlemen, like a gentlemen" (which is literally the same rhythmic pattern and interval as Chuu's "you attack my heart, you attack my heart" in Heart Attack) refrain are certified ear worms. Even the biggest pop haters couldn't resist those lines getting stuck in their head.
Like... I really don't know how to describe what I like about this song. Sure, I picked some stuff out, but that's just the tip of the iceburg. This song is balls to the walls A M A Z I N G!!!
2018 is the year of groups with lackluster debuts making amazing comebacks, I guess.
Rating - 5/5
Alright, babies, that's it for this week!! Don't forget to tune in on Friday for the next installment in my Jonghyun tribute with the first SHINee Feature Spotlight at 6pm EST, and next week at 6pm EST for this week's Review Roundup. Love you, guys!!

I was just wondering if you were going to do a sequel to XOD! I really enjoyed the game and I'm super stoked about the coming updates :3 I bought the paid version and it was so fun! I'd definitely buy a college aged version!
Aw, thank you very much ^^! I’m so glad you liked the game.
I’d certainly love to do more with these jerks if possible, haha. Maaaybe someday we could have individual mini-episodes that show JB and her guy of choice being together in the future. I don’t think there’s enough demand for a full sequel, though. If you still wanna hold out hope for that, rating the game Itch.io or leaving a review on Steam would help a lot in getting more people to try XOD. If you haven’t already done so of course, haha.
Thank you for the message <3!

Luxury Cannabis & Culture For The People In 2020
Tumblr media
Jamar Brown Basketball Days
Pic by Dave Eggen
I first met Witt Rabon while judging the Connoisseur Cup of Cannabis, held in Denver, Colorado. Not only did he bring a smile into the room when he walked in, because everyone loves Witt, I can honestly say that he towered over everyone in the super tall ceilinged room. When he sits down in front of you, at least myself at five/nine and a half; I had to stand up to see him eye to eye. Witt smiles when he speaks, thus he commands your attention immediately, his candor and kindness are the basis of his passion, what he is doing in life, his path. I found by listening that when Witt speaks, his own unique form of verbal poetry flows out. He is peaceful inside and well spoken. Witt has amazing stories to tell about a multitude of topics and the time that you take to listen to his stories, deep memories are made. I may have a certain level of knowing, but Witt is so tuned in to his unique life, he’s seen things that I can only dream about seeing in my life.

Thus the Five Questions here in Forbes Vices.
What do you ask a man who obviously loves what he is entrusted to do in life?
Do I ask him about weed? (I wanted to…) But ended up asking his partner Jamar Brown instead.
Do I ask him about South-Central? Probably not. Just not done. Word!
What about the taste of his herbs? I haven’t tried them yet.
Do I just let him be himself and speak his own words? Absolutely.
And his new collaboration? Hey, I write about a different topic. Until then, I give you Jamar Brown, C0:Founder of DRO.

DRO Flower Sour Kush

Warren Bobrow=WB: Please tell me about your company?
Jamar Brown=JB: DRO is a lifestyle brand for trap and hip hop culture with two components: one arm is focused on streetwear, and the other is DRO Flower, a high-end, luxury cannabis brand.
WB: What brought you to the cannabis business?
JB: With a name like DRO it was a natural progression. *WB note: “Hydro” is ultra-high potency medical or recreational cannabis grown indoors, under powerful lights, without soil, but using specific, potent nutrients in a water driven state, hence the word, DRO.*
JB: Through our initial experiences as a lifestyle streetwear brand, we observed a need in the industry for high-end cannabis. A friend of ours and top notch cultivator, Willy Gardiner, needed a brand that would match with his technique, dedication, and focus on the plant. So it made sense to put a familiar face with the product. This also allowed us a really fun opportunity to get creative with the packaging by blending our pop-culture expertise and the cannabis product that our consumers were looking for.

WB: What did you do originally?
JB: I played 10 years of professional basketball. The countries I played in included Turkey, Spain, China, Argentina, Mexico, South Korea, Morocco, Philippines and the NBA G League in the United States. So I was well traveled and cannabis played a big role in the cultures I experienced while playing internationally.
WB: Do you have a mentor? Did you always want to do what you do today? Who inspired you?
JB: I’m from South Central, Los Angeles so growing up, the people we looked up to were the neighborhood drug dealers. You really had to dig down deep or get caught up in the bull. My brother always inspired me, because he played professional basketball which motivated me to play and then allowed me to have different experiences. I’ve been around cannabis all my life since day one. So what I’m doing today is perfect.
WB: What are your goals in business?
JB: To create a legacy brand that supports cannabis culture, music, fashion, and the arts.
Tumblr media
Whippin That Work
Pic by John Fresh
Please tell me your six and twelve-month Goals?
JB: To build relationships with other cultivators in other legal states who have the same mindset when it comes to high-end flower and high-end branding. We are also working on creating a cannabis line with Waka Flocka Flame and are excited to share more about that as the project progresses.
WB: What about the obstacles?
JB: Obstacles are going to always come at you in life, especially in the cannabis industry, given ever-changing consumer habits. We play with a mindset that any obstacle can be overcome—learn from your failures and apply that experience to the next move.
WB: What about cannabis stigmas?
JB: A frequent stigma we’ve encountered is the idea that “Weed and sports don’t mix” — which is wrong. 10 years ago the perception was very different. I personally wouldn’t talk publicly about cannabis because I was a professional athlete, and I had to protect my job. But as athletes, almost everyone was smoking cannabis to help cope with injuries, depression etc.10 years later The NBA. MBL, NHL and NFL are no longer testing for cannabis. A lot of groundwork has been done in the last 10 years alone to reduce those stigmas.
WB: Do you have a favorite food memory? What does your favorite meal look like? Made by whom? (Living or not, like a food memory from childhood)
JB: Every Christmas my mom would make gumbo. That was one dish she would make once a year. That’s one of my favorite meals of all time. So every Christmas I make gumbo—it’s not the same as my mother’s dish—but a lot of people keep asking for it.
WB: What is your passion?
JB: DRO!!!! Building something with a team that is bigger than myself.
Thank you Jamar, I hope to enjoy and then review your exceptionally packaged, fine herbs at some point going forward.
The struggle continues – Wu Tang forever.
The come up is never easy and the cracks begin to show. The year was full of transitions and pivots that truly suck the energy out of life. If it wasn’t for a the rhino skin – this would have ended a while back.
You gotta do whatever you have to in order to stay around the block. You have to survive – as the early days are the hardest – You have to show you are really about it.

2019 - Year in Review
Tumblr media
Hello, tumblr journal, long time no see. While you were away I was having rendezvous with 2 other journals - Notion (for work thoughts) and my exercise book (for personal mundane reflections). But you probably already guessed it.
But you see, I always will come back to you because we made a pact to see each other at least twice a year, isn’t it? On June 19 and Dec 31.
So you would like to interview me about what I’ve been up to this year? Oh how kind! There are quite few people in this world is interested in little old me, hee.
1. What are your favourite memories this year?
Tele and phone calls from Jappu. Janchan and I have grown in our friendship this year surprisingly despite her being away for such a long time. I have learnt that long distance friendship is kinda fun (in fact when she was coming back home I was even a bit upset)!
Travelling with Jessi laoniang is always a treat. She is entertaining in her unassuming and authentic ways and I enjoy her cheerful company.
The monthly Kampung Sketching sessions. It’s really cool to see Lingsan overcome her fear of hosting events and now she is a pro. And to see people coming to the kampung for the first time and drawings of the kampung in so many different interesting angles.
2. What trips have you made this year and what were some highlights?
i) Prague work trip with Lulu and Claire - Snow sledding in the mountains, and going to a Czech police station to report a scam, hanging out with chor and gary after work.
ii) New Zealand with the family - Breathtaking mountain views, hiking in the rain in full gear, and skydiving over the glaciers.
iii) Beijing IXDC trip with Jess - The making of our fried chicken MV was so much fun! And eating 小龙虾,鸭脖 and beer at midnight at the hostel corridor.
iv) Boxmeer/Prague/Bruges - Business trip by myself for the first time was kinda liberating, and also getting to visit Eos in Brugge again.
v) BKK UX Savvy trip with the team - boring conference but awesome company. 5am clubbu gymmy and brekki with meowchan.
vi) JB with Lulu and Jan - making up silly animal stories, shiok Thai massage, being tickled at their new hair transformations, and interesting Grab/JB customs adventure to end it off.
3. What is the biggest change you noticed about yourself this year?
I noticed ever since taking on this role in Design Operations, I started to come out of my shell a bit more, wanting to take care of my colleagues and doing things to make sure they are happy at work. Despite being an introvert, I realised I enjoy socialising with people and making people feel comfortable. And i have also become a bit more assertive and confident in things that I believe are right to do.
4. What was the biggest challenge you had to face this year?
Politics at work busted my idealistic bubble. I was a bit upset when I heard stories of people fighting and competing with each other... just for promotion, raises and recognition. Isn’t it ridiculous? But perhaps to survive in the corporate world I have to just do my best and accept that this is normal but try not to get sucked into all the negativity.
Just stay on course, remember what you are here for - to help people solve their problems, and give it your all! Ego is the enemy.
I also learnt that sometimes my happy-go-lucky attitude doesn’t work well on everyone, and might even offend people who takes things very seriously. I need to be careful about that. But it is a tough habit to kick, because sometimes I can get slightly antsy when someone around me is in a bad mood and I don’t know why, and I would want to do something to neutralise that mood.
5. Read any good books?
Ever since I got Libby, I have been devouring new books every month, and I am learning so much! The most impactful to me this year is probably The Power Of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath. And the second one is also by the same author, Switch. These 2 books made me understand more about human psychology and how to motivate people to do things.
Other special mentions are Radical Candor (about how being brutally honest and caring personally is important) and Never Split The Difference (a book on negotiation). I learnt so much from these books that I even made nerdy ppt slides to share them with my friends, forcing them to sit through my presentations, heh. Poor things.
6. Any people you’d like to thank this year?
I can never thank my parents enough for all the things they provide me, so this top spot will always be saved for them. Although they always nag at me, and never emotionally expressive, the things they do for my siblings and I is really unconditional love.
As usual, my UX family whom I spend perhaps even more time than my actual family. This has been a year of experiments and emotional up and downs. But I feel we have learnt and grown a lot together as a team.
And all my friends. Who taught me so many things through their life stories and inspiring me to be better. Thanks to them, just a text, a call, or a meetup away, I am never lonely. (I sometimes do really wonder how that feels like!)
Ajahn Brahm. Hehe, this is a great monk that I have learnt a lot from and he probably has changed my life already. To be kindful, to be gentle, to be peaceful is to be happy.
7. What were some new things you tried this year?
5am club. Exercise regime. Brewing my own filter coffee. Getting more regular in short 15min sittings. Starting a work journal to reflect about things and people at work.
8. Name some of your favourite things of 2019
Ajahn Brahm’s dhamma talks - I always thought that I was a glass-half-full kind of girl but recently after getting hooked onto Ajahn Brahm’s stories on youtube, I became even more so. I also enjoyed repeating those stories to my friends, especially when I thought they could use some positivity to help them see their life difficulties from a different perspective. So much so that even my boss used one of the stories I told to tease me every time i made a very “evon” mistake. (Mmm... honey...)
Sodastream - I bought this for the family so that my brothers would stop buying unhealthy soft drinks. It worked! Mmm.. soda water.
Janchan’s morning challenges - thats how i started waking up early and getting productive in the mornings. But that girl does not follow through to her own challenges, tsk tsk.
Audrey’s life hack for bubble tea cup - use a silicone bag! I have amused many woobbee and each-a-cup aunties when i bring it to dabao my bubble tea.
9. What were your new year resolutions last year and how did you do?
Well well well. Let’s see.
1- Figure out how to be a leader: I am learning a lot just by observing the way boss does things. I hope he can be our leader in many years to come so I will always have the privilege to learn from him.
2 - Being more articulate and assertive: In some ways I realised I have subconsciously learned to do that in situations that requires me to do so. And the trick is just to do it with humble confidence.
3 - Plan more and be less slipshod about things: Hmm... as an operations lead I suppose I should feel guilty about not working on this more. But as I have learnt from a very wise monk, too much planning is futile sometimes, and may cause unnecessary stress on yourself and others, hehe. I kid. I will carry this rezzo forward to next year.
4 - Being more caring with my parents: Still working on it. And sometimes I will tend to fall into my old habits of silent avoidance, especially when they start nagging. But I think this year I have tried being more attentive to their needs, and talking more.
5 - Continue staying healthy: I think I’m doing pretty well in this, especially since starting to wake up super early. I have more time to workout physically with my simple exercise regime, as well as mentally through short meditation sittings and journal writing.
10. Rezzos for 2020 to start the year off of?
1 - Continue working on trying to care more for my parents, and take on more responsibilities regarding household stuff. Make them less worried that their kids can’t be independent without them.
2 - I want to try writing, and develop my own voice. As I learn more about leadership and being human, I thought should document this journey in someway so that perhaps it could help someone else one day on a similar path too.
3 - I’m surprised I didn’t mention anything about money in last year’s post. That is something I’ve always be clueless about. And today I made a ditch attempt to be more “adult” by getting a credit card, so that I can get more interests out of my bank... or something. Yeah, ok I will try to learn more about this finance thing in 2020!
4 - Find a new personal project that can give me a belly burning feeling, that is not work related. Ok la, maybe no need belly burn, just a mild tingle also can. Something that I would be excited to work on for at least a couple of months.
5 - What’s that thing about being less slipshod again? 🤔

Song of the Week
Fair warning, next week will be late on account of me being on vacation in Canada . . . probably. Like, I’m 95% sure. Also, best of the rest for August will go up tomorrow, because I love to procrastinate on packing.
Honorable Mentions:
It was really hard for me to get to the chorus of Henry’s all-English That One. Because I am not a fan of really simple intros. And the chorus, which is great, is still not quite enough for me. Henry as a vocalist is not enough for me with this song. But, I’m excited that it means he will be on the variety circuit again, because he is hilarious.
Staying in the all English songs is Jackson with a solo debut with Papillon. I adore the chorus. The rest is super not for me. But I will support Jackson in his diversification, cause good for him.
I was expecting VIXX LR’s second single to be sad like the first. Whisper is not that at all. The verse almost reminds of me of KARD’s Hola Hola. And I stuck around to listen for the high notes Leo has complained about. There are a lot, but they are all falsetto, so that at least helps.
I am all about unknowns getting views. This week, it is A.Tone with Dive In. Damn, is this track lush, and with some pretty good vocals, both from the artist and the feature.
Infinite finally has a younger brother group. For the most part, Damdadi from Golden Child is an entirely expected debut. It has way more members than seems necessary, an overly cheerful track, and a cute image. It is not bad, just nothing new or special.
I saw a post on tumblr early this week about the comeback of Movning, which put them on the radar for sotw. And I’m glad I stuck around through the beginning of Little Fighters, which has a really really interesting chorus. Less than 2,000 views is a travesty.
I’m cautiously optimistic about Nick & Sammy. Belong To Me is a little bit to obvious, but there is enough of a cool band vibe that I hope for a more interesting future. It is still a perfectly good band track, that I’m sure 2011 me would have loved.
Hyuna’s Babe is not as badass as I would expect, but is still a solid release from her. The trap elements are a bit distracting, but the chorus uses them well.
Primary released an album, here are sentence reviews of each track.
Soyou sounds great, though a little different than her usual tone in Right? which fits the style she has shown in solo work so far perfectly.
Diet takes a long time to get anywhere, though Solji sounds great (unsurprisingly).
JB is not a solo vocalist in my mind, and does not sound like his usual tone in Hush, though the chorus does a bit better.
I am this point very bored. I will somehow make it to the end.
Drama is a song with Primary and Kim Sunggyu, who also doesn’t really sound like himself, which is just a waste of his great voice.
The trend continues, with a Sandeul I can barely recognize in Pick Up.
OMG, Yoseob’s is almost upbeat. I can’t tell that he is the one singing Tukk, but at least the beat picked up.
Back to our regularly scheduled song of the week. And the winner.
I has some faith in 10cm producing some impressive music this week. And while Phonecert is adorable, it is not the reason 10cm is getting the win. Not when Help exists. The lyrics on this track are stunning, and the video is equal parts depressing and uplifting. And the vocals are just as heartbreaking as the content, desperate and wonderful. It was not even a competition.

Culture - Spider-Man: Far From Home review - BBC News
Tumblr media
After all the mass destruction and cosmic resurrection in Avengers: Endgame, it’s about time that the characters in a Marvel blockbuster had a holiday – and that’s what they get in Spider-Man: Far From Home. It’s a holiday for the viewer, too. For a change, we aren’t asked to worry about the fate of the universe; we’re invited to tag along with the 16-year-old Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and his schoolmates as they head off on a tour of Europe. Souvenirs, not supervillains, are his main concern. Of course, he has baddies to fight and innocent bystanders to save, but this is the lightest and silliest of Marvel’s films, which is what makes it so enjoyable, but also, ultimately, what makes it so forgettable. Always choosing jokes over logic, it’s a fast-paced, scrappy teen comedy in which hardly anything seems to matter. Even the obliteration and resurrection of half the planet’s population in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame is played for laughs and then forgotten, and the same goes for everything else. Drone strike on a school bus? Oops! A friend figuring out your secret identity. Never mind!More like this: Ten films to watch this July Film review: Yesterday Film review: Toy Story 4 At the beginning, Peter’s aunt May (Marisa Tomei) slips his Spider-Man costume into his suitcase without telling him, so it is spotted by an Italian customs official. The resulting awkwardness is quite funny, but it is an early indication that nothing will really be at stake in this feel-good mix of farce, hormonal soap opera, and Austin Powers-style espionage-thriller parody. If Peter’s aunt isn’t bothered by the prospect of his being outed as Spider-Man, then the viewer can’t care, either. Now that Tony Stark is no longer around, maybe Mysterio is the hero that the Earth needs – and the father figure that Peter needs It’s also slightly cruel of May to put his costume in the case, because her nephew has just told her that he wants a break from superheroing. He is desperate to hang out with his nerdy buddy Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), to declare his romantic feelings for his sardonic buddy MJ (Zendaya), and to visit some museums with his bungling teachers (JB Smoove and Martin Starr), so you might think his aunt would have let him relax. Still, it turns out that she knew what she was doing. No sooner has Peter checked into his hotel in Venice than he is abducted by two Shield agents, the ever-interfering Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and his sidekick Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), who inform him that he has to “step up” and take on the late Iron Man’s world-saving duties. His first task is to go into battle against the Elementals, four rampaging alien giants made of air, earth, water and fire. One of these dull monsters is due to pop up in Venice – and Prague and London are next on their itinerary – so Peter has to balance sightseeing with alien-bashing.Strangely, it doesn’t occur to anyone to use a fire hose on the fire Elemental or liquid nitrogen on the water Elemental, both of which would seem to be a better bet than the sticky string Spider-Man shoots from his wrists. But Peter does get some help from Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), a noble super-soldier from another dimension who sports the beard which is de rigueur for male Marvel characters, plus battle armour he could have borrowed from Thor and a goldfish-bowl helmet he could have borrowed from Buzz Lightyear. Now that Tony Stark is no longer around, maybe Mysterio is the hero that the Earth needs – and the father figure that Peter needs. There have been four actors playing Spider-Man in the last 20 years. Holland may well be the best of the lot Or maybe not. I’ll try to obey the latest Marvel hashtag, #dontspoilspidey, but anyone who has read a Spider-Man comic will know that, where Mysterio is concerned, things are not always what they appear. The film’s recurring theme is illusion: people are disguised, information is misleading and disasters are staged using smoke and mirrors. The film’s director, Jon Watts, and his screenwriters, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, are commenting on the rise of deception in the post-truth era, as well as the inherent fakery in movie-making itself, but they are playing a dangerous game. One problem with superhero blockbusters is that their climactic fight scenes tend to replace physical performers and actual locations with CGI, thus distancing the viewer from the action. However in Spider-Man: Far From Home, we are repeatedly reminded that these scenes are phoney, so the distance is greater still. I’ve never been more aware, while watching a superhero movie, that each flurry of explosions and collapsing buildings has been cooked up on a computer. What makes it even trickier to suspend your disbelief is that this is the eighth Spider-Man film in the last 20 years. And if you count Jake Johnson in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, those films have had four different actors starring as Peter Parker. Holland may well be the best of the lot. His Peter is a lovably awkward but well-meaning adolescent. But it’s hard to grow too fond of him when so many moments in his Spider-Man series are reminiscent of moments in previous iterations of the character. Between the glut of Spidey films, and this one’s knockabout tone and plot revolving around conjuring tricks, the web connecting Peter Parker to our emotions is stretched to breaking point.★★★☆☆ Love film? eCommerce Marketing Strategies – 12 Killer Tips in this video we're gonna unpack 12 killer ecommerce marketing strategy tips this is one that you can't miss if you have an e-commerce store check it out hi I'm JB with marketing 360 and we help small businesses grow with our marketing and design talent technology through our number one marketing platform marketing 360 we call marketing and design math we love math and hopefully these videos will help you fall in love with Matt too so make sure to follow us to learn tips tricks and strategies to grow your business and fuel your brand ecommerce marketing can be super complicated there's just so many different things that you can do and so in this video I'm going to break down 12 tips that we recommend you really focus on first if you dial these in you're gonna be successful online so let's jump right in tip number one is use a good shopping cart there's three shopping carts that we work with with clients all the time that we really love and so check these out if you're not already on these cars Shopify WooCommerce and BigCommerce these free carts are really good from a perspective of SEO design and also paid search so running paid ads even on social it has everything you need to scale your business it also has the support team to back you up when you need the help so check out one of those cards if you don't already have tip number two spend a tremendous amount of time optimizing your product pages with regards to SEO and design so what I mean by that is SEO would be a good product title okay don't just call it something that only you would know call it something within the title that people are actually searching online so do some keyword research figure out what people are searching for your products and make that part of your product title also include that in the description of the product write a good description remember this is your 24/7 sales person your product page never calls in sick it works through the weekends and the holidays every time somebody visits your product page you want they one perfect sales pitch so put some time into that also product photography hugely important make sure that photography is really really clean smooth and a nice design and professional and also if you can do a product video this is massively valuable make sure you invest in doing some product videos to explain your products and more details final tips here make sure you have trust badges on the page make sure it says things like you have fast shipping free shipping all that if you have that and also get reviews of your products you want to have reviews on your product pages studies show if you have reviews on your product pages that can increase your conversion rate significantly up to 400% of by having product reviews so make sure that you get product reviews on your page tip number three is a little more advanced with regards to SEO but it's making sure you have schema markup on your product pages what this means is when somebody searches on google right there in the Google search page before they even go to your website they're gonna see what Google calls product rich cards which is going to show your product image and some information right there on the search page this is gonna give you an advantage over your competitors make you a little more visible organically to people as they're searching on things like Google so here's a quick tip if you go if you just google search schema markup testing tool it'll take you to a testing tool you can just put your product page URL in there and it'll tell you if you have the proper schema markup or not if not there's some warnings and some tips there on how to make sure you add that but if you use one of those cards bigcommerce Shopify or WooCommerce they typically have good schema markup out the gate and so you can just kind of build upon that tip number four is to optimize your product feed via Google Merchant Center Google Merchant Center is what you're going to use to run Google Shopping ads which we'll get to later but the product feed is hugely important you're going to want to make sure you have good information in there with regards to your product title the description the keywords those sorts of things so that you're showing up when people are searching on Google Shopping when your ads you don't want to be not in the game when somebody's looking for your product because your product feed is not very well optimized tip number five is running Google Shopping ads Google Shopping is very very popular people go to Google they'll search something like pink shoes they'll click the shopping tab those are all ads so if you want to be in that shopping tab which we highly recommend you're going to want to make sure that you are running Google Shopping ads so invest in running product ads and then here's a tip optimize your product ads based on results so if you have ecommerce tracking setup you can see the revenue generated from each product you can really see your ROI per product on your product ads what you want to do is as time goes by turn off the ads that aren't doing as well the products that aren't doing as well and increase the budget on the products that are doing well this is going to really increase your return on investment over time tip number six is run dynamic retargeting campaigns off of your Google Shopping ads and your website visitors so that people that go to your website and they browse maybe two three products as they're surfing the internet after that on the Google Display Network which is thousands of websites online they're gonna see banner ads for your brand actually showing the specific products that they looked at so it's very very relevant this stays top of mind and it kind of just wears them down until they are ready to buy those products they click it and they purchase on your website also you can run retargeting on Facebook and Instagram as well so if somebody comes to your site they look around and they don't do anything that night when they're on Facebook kind of looking through their feed all the sudden they'll see an ad for your brand this is bringing you back to the top of their mind they're like hey I didn't have time earlier to put my credit card in there because I was getting interrupted but hey I do right now on this commercial that's on TV so I'm gonna buy right now so by doing retargeting in a dynamic way you're gonna bring a lot more sales back to your business tip number seven is to make sure that you're running Facebook and Instagram ads these are huge channels today people are on Facebook all the time so you're going to want to target people on Facebook and the targeting is so intense that you can get right in front of the person that would be for your product so one example like that is let's say that you sell gymnastics equipment to kids particularly to girls in particular you could actually target mothers that make over fifty thousand dollars a year that have daughters that are in gymnastics how targeted is that if these mothers see these ads they can afford it right they're making enough money to afford it they have daughters in gymnastics it just only makes sense they're gonna like your product they're gonna understand your brand and they're gonna eventually buy from you so make sure you take advantage of Facebook and Instagram ads those two channels are big breadwinners for e-commerce stores today tip number eight invest in your social media organically whether you need to do this yourself or hire somebody or hire another company you need to make sure you have an organic presence on social media what that means is you're posting content you're engaging on social media so not paid ads but just being involved being a part of social media today by doing this this is gonna be building your brand following organically so eventually you have 10,000 followers a hundred thousand followers the more followers you have as you're posting content building this awareness you're only going to get more sales tip number nine is to automate your email marketing email marketing is hugely important a lot of e-commerce stores fall short because they spend a lot of money to get that customer to make that first purchase but they don't remarket to those people via email marketing and other channels to get them to come back and make future purchases if you could just get each of your customers to make one more purchase than they normally do think about what that does to your revenue so with email marketing it allows this an automated way to make that happen so here's an example you could set up an automated campaign for holidays you just set this up at the beginning of the year for the whole year with promotions on all these different holidays that automatically get sent to all of your past customers so that's one example there's tons of other examples like sending them automated emails to capture reviews for your products is another way to build product review content way if you're creative with your email marketing and you automate it this is gonna scale your business so that you can increase your sales overall and increase your return on investment on your marketing dollars tip number ten is invest in SMS marketing SMS marketing is text message marketing reason why that's important is because only about 20% of people will typically open up your email sometimes even less and they also won't open it up in real time there's lag there right but with text messages it's almost a hundred percent of people open the text message and most of them are within a five minute window so that can be really powerful on slow sales days on the end of the month times when you need to clear out old inventory stuff like that so build a VIP text message marketing campaign and one way to do this is put a banner on your site that says hey for Vi VIP deals text something like hot deals to 399 702 opt in and get an immediate 20% coupon right now by doing that it gets people to opt-in to get that coupon but now they're in that list for future VIP deals that you can tap into when you need to tip number 11 is to use a CRM so many e-commerce stores don't really have a CRM they're actually using the backend of their car to look at customer data and kind of using that as a CRM that's not effective you want to integrate your cart with an actual CRM so that you can populate all of your customer data and even add additional data in there as you get to know your customer and so if you hire a sales person or if you're the sales person working through the CRM and actually making proactive calls to your customers can be life-changing for your business if you just reach out say hey how was it did you get your package in time is everything going okay for you what else are you interested in can I keep an eye out for other deals that come up and let you know do you have any kids where are their birthdays what are they interested in if you get to know the customer you can save this information in your CRM your salesperson can just continually follow up these people and I'm telling you you'll see four or five times more sales per customer than you would otherwise so it's a huge investment but a great return to look at a salesperson in a CRM and connecting those into your process within your e-commerce business last tip tip 12 is to create a customer care package that you send with all of your product purchases to the customer so don't just send them a bag with a logo on it send them a nice package that has a handwritten note it has a coupon in it for a future purchase that maybe has a referral card in there they can give to a friend this is gonna be a nice experience for the customer and it's really going to give them a good sense of feeling towards your brand and probably get them to come back and purchase it with you again but one really hot tip here is if you're selling on other channels such as Amazon or something like that when you send those products with the care package the coupon and whatnot should recommend they come back to your branded website to make future purchases this is gonna increase your profitability right and get your brand going on your own website which is what you want to do so take advantage of these care packages design something real nice and when they receive your product you stand out in the crowd from other businesses you may could be competing against so e-commerce is super intense we could go for days with different tips but these 12 tips I feel like are really the ones that are the most important so focus on these tips if you have questions give us a call or leave a comment if you liked the video like it if you want to share the video please do and also follow us for more tips tricks and strategies just like this moving forward
