I did it again. I made a physical copy of one of my fanfics, and it turned out brilliant. I love it, and I wanted to share it with you all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fic is a The Owl House fic called “On Earth and Boiling Isles.”
“Luz is an overactive girl being sent to Summer camp. Her sister is a punk who picked too many fights on her sister’s behalf and is stuck taking Summer classes to make up for a suspension.
Luz goes to the Boiling Isles, and meets Amity Blight, a witch who is her rival-turned-friend-turned-girlfriend.
Lucia is stuck in class, and meets Amelia, a green haired, pointy earred girl and local class flirt.
Luz destroys the portal that will take her back home at the end of the summer to keep it out of an Emperors hands.
Lucia greets her sister back from Summer camp, and can’t shake the feeling that something is very wrong.”
It clocks in at 278 pages, and 172k words. Unlike my last fic, this one doesn’t have any illustrations inside, as I hadn’t really hit my artsy phase, but I did create the covers! It has two covers due to the two plots that go on in the story, one focused on big sis Lucia on Earth, and the other on Luz in the Boiling Isles. See, so clever! I deserve headpats and praise for being so smart!
The story was written over a year ago, and only stays with canon up until the end of S2e8. I started writing it almost immediately after S2e4, where “Creepy Luz” first appeared, and had to draw a line on when canon had to end, since I kept having to update written parts of the fic, and find roles for new characters as they were added. Raine hadn’t shown up yet when I started writing, and Hunter was still just the Golden Guard, after all! The story started getting posted about two weeks after 2A ended, with the bulk written before Yesterday’s Lie even aired.
I hope you all will give it a look over. Maybe even a read. Until then, here are the links, and the art.

jacket
[ ID: A digital comic of Philip Wittebane from The Owl House. In the first panel, a young philip is smiling, looking at Caleb who is to the right of him. He is holding the sleeve of the jacket Caleb is wearing. Caleb is also smiling, but the top half of his head is obscured. In the background is a sun-like pattern of lines. In the second panel below, a young philip is alone and upset. He is clutching the jacket Caleb used to wear. Messy scribbled lines fill the edges of the background. In the third panel, an older philip (same appearance as in “Elsewhere and Elsewhen”) is staring ahead angrily as he clutches the one sleeve of what used to be Caleb’s jacket. There are small traces of blood on the jacket and on his face. In the background directly behind him is an explosion of lines, almost resembling a firework like pattern. Finally, in the last panel at the very bottom, is a much older Philip in his current design (as of King’s tide). His one arm holds his other, still wearing Caleb’s jacket. He is frowning, with the rest of his face obscured. In the background, lines come down from the top, similar to a melting/dripping pattern. End ID. ]

Before I do quick question. Can you guys go in different dimensions like other universes?
Tumblr media
The Coordinator: Odd question, I did explain it, but that was quite a while ago. The current prevailing theory for Collectors is that if alternate dimensions or universes exist, they are inaccessible, because Collectors are the strongest thing in the universe and we haven't been able to make portals.
Tumblr media
The Charmer: Coordinator, I am sorry for ever doubting you, if this mortal is implying what I think they are then we might prove two elusive theories, long researched and agonized over by scholars, to be possible.

"What's a Continent?"
PEOPLE FROM THE BOILING ISLES HAVE NO CONCEPT OF HOW BIG A CONTINENT IS!
Sorry, but that just popped into my mind!
The biggest piece of land they know about is the Titan, and that is just one island (and not even an unusually big one by Earth standards*).
So, the idea that land could go on and on, that you could keep walking for weeks on weeks before you see the ocean again would be very strange for the inhabitants of the Boiling Isles.
To them, the sheer scale of many places on earth would be incomprehensible. Some places like deserts or tundras are just straight up science-fiction to them.
Anyway, just wanted to point that out.
(* Size-wise, Dana once estimated the B.I. to be roughly the size of Vermont. For an island of equivalent size, we can look at Sicily or Sardinia.)

I swear people who complained Vol 9 is a filler are the same people who complained Team RWBY not getting much character focus and development (especially Ruby)
there's no satisfying some people (and i guarantee 'focus and development' would probably have only meant 'directly fighting the bad guys for 9 episodes straight and getting ridiculous shonen anime upgrades that come out of nowhere')

Did Belos restrict the boiling isles knowledge of humans? Or was it always that way? How ignorant would the boiling isles be of humans there just powerless witches without pointy ears? I feel like the boiling isles residents should be fare interested in humans not just Gus and his friends?
I think it was a mess crude of both. He seemed to have softened the general perceptions of humans considering they’re not actively going on about how they’re inferior due to their lack of magic. Humans probably would be disliked or discriminated against considering that magic is an almost essential part of their society. Additionally, this is seen in how Eda is treated after she loses her magic and how Hunter is so certain that he wouldn’t have a future in the Boiling Isles without his uncle caring for him.
As a whole, the Demon Realm doesn’t seem to know a lot about humans or Earth. Some of it is bound to be caused by the infrequent, difficult to locate, and temporary nature of natural portals, making the exchange and diffusion of resources and culture primarily coming from trash that washes through the portals while they’re open. That alone created a few degrees of separation and leaves more about the Human Realm up to interpretation.
The rest of it is likely intentionally done by Philip through the collection and confiscation of human materials. In his eyes, if the Boiling Isles knows more about the Human Realm, then it would be more likely to be seen as a target and witness attacks or voyages into the realm to collect resources that could be used. Philip would try to diminish the possibility of that happening as much as possible. It may be another reason that Eda has such a high bounty—she’s exposing the Boiling Isles to human materials and increasing awareness of them.
There are probably defects in their Demon Realm that cause changes in ear shape or size, but I’m not sure how those would apply to powerless witches as opposed to non-powerless witches. There is a strong chance that they’d just be mistaken for powerless witches. After all, Willow pointed out that Gus was only able to notice Luz was a human so quickly because he’s a fan of them, while most demons or witches would take a while.
I think, considering the effort that Philip took to protect the Human Realm from the Boiling Isles, it makes sense that not many people are too interested in them or aware of their existence beyond folk tales.

it seems like some people in the owl house fandom still need to hear this
Guys.
The Owl House is not going to end with Luz leaving the Boiling Isles behind and living in the human realm.
Luz has established so much of an actual whole life in the Boiling Isles, none of which can be easily left behind.
Take her relationship with Amity. Remember what Luz said to Amity when first asking to date her? She said "I don't know what my future's going to look like, but it would be so cool if you were in it." Does that seem like it would remotely make sense, after that, for it to just...end? With the two possibly never seeing each other again?
Her learning to be a witch too. It's such a big part of the show, the amount of time that’s been dedicating to her wanting to learn magic, to her finding the glyphs and teaching herself how to use them, developing and honing her skills with them, and that she’s fully enrolled in a school for magic too. It honestly feels very much like a whole life-ambitions thing. It would make no sense for her to just go back to a world where none of the skills she's spent so much time and effort learning can be used and just. Stay there.
The Owl House never felt like it was trying to send any anti-escapism message or anything like that. Luz hasn't treated the Isles like they're just a way to live out her fantasies and escape reality for a long, long time. Arguably since the beginning, even. She said in the first episode that it wasn't the PG fantasy world she'd always dreamed of. And the fact that her life on the Boiling Isles isn't some escapist fantasy has only gotten more and more clear over time, it's been pointed out by plenty of folks in this fandom before.
Honestly, everything Luz has gone through on the Boiling Isles and everything she's been doing there feels like putting down roots and charting out a whole life course there. And The Owl House overall has always been very much about making one's own decisions, deciding one's own future. There've been long text post essays on that. That's what Luz has been doing this whole time, and she's been doing it within the context of the Boiling Isles. It includes her mom, but it also includes everycreature she's come to know and love in the demon realm and everything she's been learning to do there, none of which would be applicable back on Earth.
Not to mention her mom is literally the ONLY thing she’s ever expressed wanting to go back to in the human realm, and we’ve known for a long time she was bullied and ostracized there, and in Thanks To Them Camilla’s nightmare flashbacks and some of Luz’s video diary entries only drove it in even further just how out of place she always was in the human realm. She’s more accepted on the Boiling Isles by now than she EVER was in the human realm. On her mom’s doorstep after the events of King’s Tide, she said “I’m back.” She didn’t say “I’m home.” When she did say “Yeah. I’m home.” after Camilla said she was glad Luz was home, I don’t think it could’ve been much clearer in her voice or her face (which the screen took a moment to fully focus on) that those words didn’t feel true to her.
When Luz DID decide in Thanks To Them that the best course of action for her would be to stay in the human realm, this was framed as being entirely wrong. Partly because it was out of a false belief that she would be of no help and only made people’s lives worse, and partly because it was very much established how she did not belong in the human realm. Camilla clearly knew Luz staying in the human realm wouldn’t be right as soon as she heard Luz say this. Her immediate and wholehearted response was “No, no way in heck am I letting you do that, don’t you even say that. You’re going back there, and now that I’ve seen what you’re up against, you’re taking me WITH you.”
Nothing about The Owl House feels like it’s leading into Luz saying goodbye to the demon realm and going back to living the rest of her life in the human realm. It would make no sense for the show to end like that, and everything about the show feels deliberately built up in a direction that goes completely against ending like that.
So yeah. Anycreature who’s been worrying about this, you can relax.

A tragedy in 4 parts.
his horrified little face when she snatches the phone away...
Meanwhile, I see that the flower Luz created has stabilised somewhat. It’s a different colour from the one she was working with, and slightly smaller, but it’s definitely the same kind of flower. So now all that remains to be seen is whether it’s a general plant-growth rune, or if it’s just for that specific species of flower!

I just imagine the Isles learning of Greek and Roman and other mythology gods and being very alarmed and confused
Tumblr media
You know? I feel like that depends entirely on which group of people are looking at which mythos, lol
I figure the witches consider themselves more "civilized" compared to the other folk of the Isles, so they might be more horrified at some of them perhaps. But the demon-folk are probably only certain levels of confused and potentially just from a practical standpoint.
No matter what, curiosity is probably in overabundance for the lot of them, especially knowing the age. (headcanon incoming) I figure truly ancient historical records are hard to come by because of the chaotic nature of the Isles, making it hard to keep hold of documents or keep them in good condition. So a lot of what they have regarding the way back times is oral history and tall tales. Seeing such well preserved history going back thousands of years is probably mindblowing!
Very interesting thoughts!

So, did Belos name it the Demon Realm? Like, that and calling the magic denizens "witches" sounds like something he'd put in place as a final layer of demonization that he gets them to do willingly. It would mirror his representation as a force of colonialism, imposing his view of reality on something barely even superficially the same

Ah. The real Luz felt out of place on earth but is thriving on the Boiling Isles, while Vee as Luz has been fitting in way better on earth. We love a dramatic irony

I love that Luz resolves the problems of the show by being herself.
She convinces the Collector to try being kind, she realizes the hallucinations and wakes up Eva and King thanks to her fandom knowledge, she used her study of glyphs extensively in the final battle. She also tries to redo her dramatic entrance with better quips and makes dumb jokes with the Titan.
But more than that…technically, the Titan could have given their power to anyone. Anyone close to King or of better moral standing than Belos (which is a low bar) could have taken the Titan’s power and fought with it if they’d ended up in that trans dimensional space.
But it’s Luz, not because she’s the only one who can, but because she’s a good person who’s been there for King and the rest of the Isles.
Luz isn’t the Chosen One - she’s just the one who was chosen. There’s no magical destiny about her defeating a great evil — she just was a kindhearted person who had the tools to help and did.
And she did so much. For the Boiling Isles, and for a lot of weirdos on earth.

Vee with a Palisman! His name is Dewdrop, and he's precious, and Vee loves him like a baby, but he's protective and tries to act big, but he's tiny. (Then again, if a bug this big in real life threatened me, I would probably run for the hills)
It took me a while to figure out what I wanted their species to be, but then when I started thinking about insects, my mind went to these little fellas that hide in plain sight, JUST. LIKE. VEE.
Tumblr media
I'm definitely using him in my AU (where Vee grows up on earth and comes with Masha to the Boiling Isles [I realize I probably need a name for it]). Maybe they bond on Palisman Adoption Day, or earlier, IDK.

Why, out of GF, Amphibia, and TOH, only Luz didn't have to leave her new world behind:
I've seen people complain about Amphibia and to a lesser extent, Gravity Falls, for having their series end with a goodbye; the main characters having to leave their found families and this world they've grown to love and return to regular life. But the thing is, the three shows all have MASSIVELY different morals, that each fit in with how the goodbyes (or lack thereof) work into the finales.
Gravity Falls has a large theme of temporary goodbyes and reconciling. Stan and Ford being the primary example. But there are others: Soos and Melony, Wendy and Robbie, even Dipper and Mabel to an extent. The show builds upon this with Gravity Falls being a VACATION, they aren't trapped there, they could theoretically go home at any time. Episodes such as Summerween and Dipper and Mabel Vs. The Future also build on the tone, telling that it's okay to both grow up and move on, but you don't have to leave behind what you once loved in doing so.
The final conflicts (Wierdmaggedon) are caused because of characters not being able to let go. Stan couldn't let go of Ford, Mabel couldn't let go of Gravity Falls, Gideon couldn't let go of Mabel.
Gravity Falls teaches the viewer that even if you love something, you have to let it go, and eventually it will return. In the words of Bill Cipher: "We'l meet again. Don't know where, don't know when. I just knew we'll meet again, some sunny day."
Tumblr media
Amphibia has a similar theme of Gravity Falls, but it takes it further. Amphibia tells you that if you don't let go, sometimes things will only get worse. The primary example for this is the show's catalyst event: Marcy getting Anne to steal the Music Box. Marcy chose to go to Amphibia, rather than move away, and she dragged her friends into it with her. Instead of having a long distance friendship with Sasha and Anne, she took them to an alternate dimension in order to spend eternity on a massive adventure, and it got her killed. Marcy and Anne died and Sasha tried to kill herself.
And that's only Marcy. Sasha was a control freak that bordered on yandere at the height of her villain arc. Sasha couldn't accept that Anne was beginning to move on from the toxic friendship that the Calamity Trio had locked themselves into.
The trio were horrible to eachother, pre-character arcs, and they needed to focus on self improvement before they could even hope to be good friends. In the time between 'All In' and the epilog, the Calamity Trio would not have actually been able to be good for eachtoher. They say they forgive eachother, but that was forgiveness given during a WAR. Post show, the real feelings would start to bubble up. Anne's resentment for the betrayals, Marcy’s abandonment issues, Sasha's definite self hatred. The trio HAD to split up to have any semblance of a friendship.
Amphibia tells its audience that not all good things can last, and if you obsess and force it to stay, it can destroy you.
Tumblr media
The Owl House has a completely opposite moral. It tells you to find your people, and fight for them.
Luz lived in the Human Realm, but it was never her home. Her home was with Camila and Manny, but when Manny died, Camila and Luz's relationship began to falter. That world wasn't her home. When Luz found the Boiling Isles, she was always supposed to be able to leave. This wasn't a summer trip she didn't want at first, or a one way portal. The Boiling Isles was HER choice.
Luz picked Bonesburrow. Luz picked Hexside. Luz picked The Owl House. Her home was always meant to be The Boiling Isles. She only started trying to find a way back to Earth because the choice was taken from her. Luz no longer had the choice to go back to the Human Realm. In fact, the only time Luz chose Humans over Isles was when she was PUNISHING herself for helping Belos.
Luz got to stay in the Boiling Isles because TOH tells its audience that where you start isn't where you should always stay. Find your place and find your people. And when you do, hold it dear and never let go. "Us weirdos have to stick together."
