OWL HOUSE FACT #22: During the reconstruction of the Isles this hole was turned into a pool after it was discovered that the Emperor’s Coven scouts didn’t harm it during their raid. After they both passed of old age the pool was named after Luz and Amity, for their bravery in saving the Isles and being the spot where they began their lifelong relationship.

I just imagine the Isles learning of Greek and Roman and other mythology gods and being very alarmed and confused
Tumblr media
You know? I feel like that depends entirely on which group of people are looking at which mythos, lol
I figure the witches consider themselves more "civilized" compared to the other folk of the Isles, so they might be more horrified at some of them perhaps. But the demon-folk are probably only certain levels of confused and potentially just from a practical standpoint.
No matter what, curiosity is probably in overabundance for the lot of them, especially knowing the age. (headcanon incoming) I figure truly ancient historical records are hard to come by because of the chaotic nature of the Isles, making it hard to keep hold of documents or keep them in good condition. So a lot of what they have regarding the way back times is oral history and tall tales. Seeing such well preserved history going back thousands of years is probably mindblowing!
Very interesting thoughts!

I wish Disney would release “The Unauthorized Boiling Isles History” book but with some annotations like commentary, doodle, or notes from TOH characters like Luz, Eda, or Lilith

Hey, while you're hugging Caleb, could you maybe also stab Belos? Yanno, for the holiday spirit.
asdlkfjslkdjf where i am it's still technically pi day so i shall give Caleb and Hunter pie for folks on my side of the date line and stab Belos for the folks who are a day ahead
(also, as a fun aside, consider that back in Caleb's day, as an orphan kid from the 1600s with little to no access to things that were luxuries then, he would've had a slightly different reaction to fairy pie than Luz lmao)

Wait wait wait does Belos forcing everyone into one specific type of magic represent the way many pagan communities have been christianized because the way many of them believed in multiple gods was viewed as "savage" .... Holy

Hey, if Belos thinks magic is evil, and all magic comes from the Titan, and witches and demons worship the Titan as their god, then, logically, Belos would believe that the Titan is the Literal Christian Devil.
This means nothing I just think it's funny
Also that makes King the Antichrist

Could you write a bit of Small Town Paranormal Investigations for WIP Wednesday please?
Yes I could, thanks for the push!
"Huh," Luz's voice pulled her out of her head, as she too looked around, "Looks like they got rid of the jukebox." And just as she was starting to get her confidence back, a new, confusing, human thing had to rear its head. "The… jukebox?" "Oh, it's like a— actually, I never figured out what you guys call 'em in the Demon Realm." She pulled out her phone, likely to look up a picture, "It's a box full of vinyl records, you stick a snail— er, a quarter— in the slot, then you pick a disc, and it plays it. They're like, classic staples of retro diners, even if most of 'em are just there to sit around and look pretty."

The Origin of Witches
So, on the Boiling Isles, most magic user are either pointy-eared witches or demons.
Demons supposedly evolved from parasites/animals feasting on the Dead Titan, and while I'm not quite convinced that this entirely true, they are still very clearly a part of the demon realm.
"Witches" on the other hand look so similar to humans they can easily mistaken for them if you don't look at the ears. Furthermore, Caleb's story implies that witches and humans can interbreed, and if the Clawthornes are truly descendants of him, that child was capable of reproduction.
So, the most logical explanation is that "witches" evolved from humans that got stranded on the Boiling Isles a few thousand years ago. (And yes, I know I'm not first to have this idea).
Now, a few thousand years shouldn't be enough time to evolve an organ like the magic bilesac. Which is why I will propose two possible origins.
I. Evolution sped up through Magic
While evolving a whole new organ that quickly isn't possible in our world, it might be possible on the corpse of a dead Titan.
Here, we assume that the magic surrounding those humans both created a big selective pressure to develop the bilesac and actively introduced the right kind of mutations. In a sense "creating" witches.
This works best in a world where "the will of the Titan" wasn't just something Belos invented, a world where the consciousness of the Dead Titan still lingers on in the magic of the Isles.
This process would still take some generations, but not nearly as long as it would otherwise.
II. Half-Demon Origin
We know that witches and demons can hybridize. And as Boiling Isles natives, bipedal demons would have already had a bilesac when those humans arrived.
So, let's assume that the first "witches" were half-demons that inherited the bilesac from their demon parent, alongside a few other traits like pointed ears, fangs and a more robust digestion track.
Then those hybrids reproduced with humans and other hybrids, and because most of those traits make it much easier to survive on the Boiling Isles, they soon spread throughout the human population, until those "humans" looked like the witches now common on the Boiling Isles.
All of this still leaves the question of why humans and demons can hybridize in the first place. But for now I'm willing to blame magic and be done with it.
Now, I kinda prefer option 2, because it explains why witches don't look exactly like humans and because it works well with witches like Adrian Graye, Boscha or Mary who all have an unusual physical trait that can be explained by demonic ancestry.
But in a story where the "lingering presence of the Titan" is actually important, option 1 could be more thematically appropriate.

I translated the unauthorized history of the boiling isles into hedezhoop then wrote it in heteziform, heteziform is a script for the primary drekol language which alternates line to line, left to right and right to left
"The Boiling Isles, born from the flesh and bones of a fallen Titan. This original magic was so potent, all life on the Isles evolved to wield magic too. For years, we explored those powers freely. Until, a mysterious witch appeared who declared that he, and he alone, could speak to the island. He said that we were using magic all wrong. His teachings took hold, his strength grew, and he became... Emperor Belos. Belos said that mixing magic was wrong, that only he had that right. So he created the coven system. And there, our knowledge was restricted, and our potential sealed away. Those who resist are called wild witches, and they face harsh punishment. Emperor Belos has since retreated into his castle. There are whispers that say he's planning something big." english "dre k'toz zluto drebotuh, ubzoozhoob tregul ezhuk bazhe bul bukud pagut. gah kretodpezd tagled bogre, pazhod tregul bul drebotuh upsozhoob bepezd kretodpezd. pazhod dre tagul, dre ubzogase zhedu kretodpezd pughetos. daku, odod tlekezud upsogleta pur hetestozhoob zhedu pur, pooke gohut, kret hertz grokes kozh drebotuh. pur hertz pazh bekret kretadpezd bug. p’ur ubzogasezhoob trekoorupso, p’ur bogre guhoz, pooke upsota… drebogre belos. belos hetez guhozpezd kretadpezd bug, pooke gohut pur gad to’ks. pooke pur taguhoz kubud kosad. pooke tagul, zap gazet ragad olebor, zap bukud bul lok. drekol zhedu upsoad pubuzhe olebor tlekezud, zud z’ooko begodbug. drebogre belos tagul togelzhoob grokes pagutdozhdol. drekol zootoohetez bul por gupsopu zhedu begod" romanized "dɹ̠ɘ kʔtɑz zləto̞ dɹ̠ɘbɑtəɦ, əbzʉʒʉb tɹ̠ɘgəl зʒək,bɐ̞ʒɘ bəl bəkəd pɐ̞gət. gɑɦ kɹ̠ɘtɑdpɘzd tɐ̞glзd bo̞gɹ̠ɘ, pɐ̞ʒɑd tɹ̠ɘgəl bəl dɹ̠ɘbɑtəɦ əpso̞ʒʉb bɘpɘzd kɹ̠ɘtɑdpɘzd. pɐ̞ʒɑd dɹ̠ɘ tɐ̞gəl, dɹ̠ɘ əbzɑgɐ̞sɘ ʒзdə kɹ̠ɘtɑdpɘzd pəgɦɘtɑs. dɐ̞kə, ɑdɑd tlзkɘzəd əpso̞glзtɐ̞ pəɹ̠ ɦɘtɘstɑʒʉb ʒзdə pəɹ̠, pʉkɘ gɑɦət, kɹ̠ɘt ɦɘtɘz gɹ̠ɑkɘs ko̞ʒ dɹ̠ɘbɑtəɦ. pəɹ̠ ɦɘtɘz pɐ̞ʒ bɘkɹ̠ɘt kɹ̠ɘtɑdpɘzd bəg. pʔəɹ̠ əbzɑgɐ̞sɘʒʉb tɹ̠ɘkʉɹ̠əpso̞, pʔəɹ̠ bo̞gɹ̠ɘ gəɦo̞z, pʉkɘ əpso̞tɐ̞… dɹ̠ɘbo̞gɹ̠ɘ bɘlo̞s. bɘlo̞s ɦɘtɘz gəɦo̞zpɘzd kɹ̠ɘtɑdpɘzd bəg, pʉkɘ gɑɦət pəɹ̠ gɐ̞d tɑʔks. pʉkɘ pəɹ̠ tɐ̞gəɦo̞z kəbɘd ko̞sɐ̞d. pʉkɘ tɐ̞gəl, zɐ̞p gɐ̞zɘt tɐ̞gɐ̞d o̞lɘbɑɹ̠, zɐ̞p bəkəd bəl lo̞k. dɹ̠ɘko̞l ʒзdə əpso̞ɑd pəbəʒɘ o̞lɘbɑɹ̠ tlзkɘzəd, zəd zʔʉko̞ bɘgo̞dbəg. drebo̞gɹ̠ɘ bɘlo̞s tɐ̞gəl tɑgɘlʒʉb gɹ̠ɑkɘs pɐ̞gətdɑʒdo̞l. dɹ̠ɘko̞l zʉtʉɦɘtɘz bəl po̞ɹ̠ gəpso̞pə ʒзdə bɘgo̞d." ipa "[particle for important] hot water continent, move[verb] life meat, bone from dead beast. first magic [past]exist strong, many life from continent change[verb] [use]tool magic. many [particle for important] time, we learn these magic [do]free. then, odd tlekezud appear[past] he speak[verb] that he, and alone, able speak with the continent. he speak we [use]able magic bad. his learn[verb] magic, his power expand, and change[past]... highest god belos. belos spoke mixing magic bad, and only he is permitted. then he make coven thread. which time, our know is[past] stranded, our death from us[dual]. people that change[not] name[do] stranded tlekezud, they confront [large]pain. highest god belos present critter[verb] at beast-house. people small-talk from he [future]change[do] something large." direct translation "the scalding continent, birthed from meat and bones of a dead beast. this first magic was strong, every living thing on the continent changed to control magic. for many years, we learned this magic freely. then, an odd tlekezud appeared and he spoke that he, and he only, is able to speak at the continent. he said we control magic incorrectly. with his teachings of magic, his power expanded, and he became… highest god belos. belos spoke that mixing magic was bad, and only he is permitted. then he made the coven system. which then, our knowledge was stranded, our abilities taken. people that don’t change are titled stranded tlekezud, and they confront intense punishments. highest god belos currently hides at the castle. people whisper that he is planning something big" localized translation

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THINGS…. (reply via @visdiefje)
THIS IS SO SWEET OF YOU BOTH BUT I NEED MORE DIRECTION DFKJGDFGDF i do not know what to yell about unprompted. what have i not talked about yet. have i talked about how witches and palistrom trees are symbiotic entities. im very proud of that particular lore :3 but also a lot of it is stuff unpacked across the series so maybe i shouldnt spill everything djgkdfg
but what i CAN say is that. palistrom trees are 100% sapient they simply exist on a time scale we mere mortals cannot comprehend. and they love their witches so so much you guys. they love those funky little guys SO MUCH.

This may be of some interest?
An extract from "The History Of The Boiling Isles".
A collection  of articles written by various people, and intended as a source of information for learners.
As the real history of The Isles had been corrupted by the previous administration, considerable research is still underway to uncover the true facts.
Lilith Clawthorne is one of the leaders of this effort to reclaim the true past of The Isles.
THE HISTORY OF THE OWL HOUSE TOWER.
By Edalyn Clawthorne.
The story starts a long time ago, before the Empire was formed...
The township of Bonesborough has a small port associated with it.
The cliff on which The Owl House  now stands overlooks Bonesborough, and the Boiling Sea.
It was decided to build a tower on top of the cliff.
Tumblr media
The tower was to act as a watch tower. Someone was to keep a look out for approaching ships, and to signal the town officials when one was sighted.
After many years, after the empire was formed, the trade to Bonesborough Port fell away.
The watch tower fell into disuse, and started to suffer damage from the Rains and storms, that wasn't repaired.
Dell Clawthorne was looking for somewhere to use as a workshop and store, so as to take his Palisman workshop out of the family home.
He found the tower, which wasn't too far from the Clawthorne house, and purchased the tower from the port commission.
He didn't do much work on it before Eda Clawthorne ran away from home, after the unfortunate attack on her father, and overhearing her mother, Gwendolyn, and the witches from the Healing Coven discussing her Owl Beast curse.
She went to the tower, to use it as a shelter, while she decided what to do next.
Eda found the portal door in the grounds of the tower.
Later,  She had the Owl House house built alongside the old tower.
Tumblr media
(Ends.)
From the author...
"I love the views from up here, on my own look out place.
Tumblr media
"Then there's the small cove down below the cliffs, Echo Beach.
It is so called because of the echo there.
I know it sounds daft, but I used to go down there especially to watch the sun go down over the Boiling Sea.
It was so peaceful, the winds and waves making the only sounds, and the lights of Bonesborough in the distance, a surrealistic sight."
Tumblr media
Best wishes,
Eda. 🙂

back in the day i would think about like. before tenanye and daimon got together/ how they fell in love was thru "Sparring".... after the first time tenanye killed daimon (ashe at the time) it kind of gave her a rush and was one of the things that made her want to start staying.... and so she would go back to kill him over and over and have fun fighting him (solo, no pawns, altho the first few times eolande and a pawn named carrencia were there actually, but she abandoned eolande quickly and carrencia later, i have always wanted to make a carrencia expy lol) but this is literally how they bonded and got to know each other.... just tenanye getting stronger and stronger and feeling the rush of the each time they would fight.... i think daimon would come to see it that way too bc it'd be obvious pretty quickly to him that she didn't care abt the cycle and felt at home on the isle.... i think they'd both be able to intuit that there had Almost Always been MORE to their bond than just the sparring (mainly fostered thru their shared connection/affinity for bbi as a Location and hatred for the cycle).... it's also fun to think of sexual tension developing thru their sparring LOL

Canonically, it would have to be a reconstruction, because the original book was eaten by the echo mouse. (But I guess Book 3 in GF was also destroyed, so whatever.)
Also I think it makes more sense if Lilith helped with the reconstruction, because she's a historian, met Philip and saw the original herself - but still, Eda sneaking in her own notes sounds fun.
ok i’ve seen people talk about toh having a complimentary book, something like the Enchiridion for Adventure Time, Marcy’s Journal for Amphibia, The Spell Book for Star vs, something to sell alongside the series that has lore and plot beats for the fans.
And Honestly, would be cool if we got a replica of philip’s journal as that book.
Would it be full of lies? oh yeah.
But it could contain lots of great lore, about the collectors, the titans, magic, how he found the grimwalker spell, anything philip found on the isles, we may be able to pick out a lot of fact and truth from his lies within the book and get so much great worldbuilding.
and on top of that, you could always do something fun, like say the book is a reconstruction eda or luz made of the old journal, and they have added their own notes to his pages, which could also make it more fun.
