Omnia oven - Recipe
Strawberry sponge cake
Ok, so I live in my van full time & I don’t have some fancy shmancy rig with a full kitchen. I use a single portable propane burner & my 2 burner Coleman camp stove, so ENTER the magical Omnia oven, which allows me to bake to my hearts content without burning things like my cast iron baking abilities!
Sponge cake
3 eggs
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 1/2 tbsp butter (softened)
1/2 cup + 1 tbsp milk
1 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Mix together eggs, sugar, vanilla - Add softened butter to milk - mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl then add slowly to wet mixture. Mix well until smooth.
You do not need to preheat your omnia oven - just set your propane burner on the lowest possible setting & bake 35 minutes - cake is done when a fork comes out clean after piercing cake.
Strawberry topping
1 lb of FRESH strawberries diced
1/3 cup sugar
2 tbsp lemon juice
Dice & stem strawberries - coat fresh berries with sugar & lemon juice - mix well. Boil in sauce pan then set temp to a low simmer (continuing to stir) cook for 15-20 minutes- sauce will thicken once cooled.
Top cake with strawberry sauce & presto! Delicious cake in your own van or off grid space! Happy baking!

FLABBERGASTED FRIDAY FLUFF
How do you know when your clock is still hungry? It goes back four seconds.
I went down a rabbit hole the other day, reading reviews and watching videos about the Aeropress. If you're not familiar with it, the Aeropress is a contraption that is sort of a pour over/French press/espresso/something or other combination.
You place the compact apparatus over a cup, pour water over the grounds, stir, wait, and plunge. Some swear by it and it's great for travel and camping, especially with fresh ground coffee. Opinions are divided between it and a traditional French press.
I don't need one, but I find it interesting. If you have an Aeropress I'd be interested in your opinion. That doesn't happen often, but once in a while I'm open to listening.
At the moment I'm really enjoying my Stanley French press. While camping our normal favorite is Trader Joe's instant coffee packets with cream and sugar already included. Kopiko is also a good brand.
What do you call a magician who has lost his magic? Ian.
I've also stumbled across the Omnia camp oven. It bakes food on a standard camp stove and looks really handy. It's shaped like a bundt pan to distribute the heat. You won't bake a turkey or throw a frozen pizza in it, but you can make a homemade pizza.
Some complain about food getting burnt on the bottom, but a heat diffuser fixes that. Again, something we don't need but could enjoy while camping and if we ever become full time travelers it would be handy.
I was mixing two-part epoxy and got it all over my hands. The doctor said it might never come off, but I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.
Now if you'll excuse me I need to make a trip into town for some grits and grub.
I love you, baby. Even more than a fresh cup of coffee. MWAH!
Y'all have a great day.

Jan Lasicki (1534–1620) informs us:
Furthermore, the Lithuanians and the Samogytians keep serpents in their houses, beneath the furnace or in the corner of the drying oven, where the table is. At certain times of the year, they honor them like gods (serpentes fouent, quos numinis instar colentes), inviting them to their tables with sacrificial prayers. Leaving their lairs, these reptiles climb upon the table with the help of a clean sheet and settle in. After having tasted a little of each dish, they then go back down into their holes. After they leave, the people gaily eat the dishes they tasted, hoping that the year will be a fortunate one (sperant illo anno omnia pros- pere sibi euentura). If, however, despite the prayers of those willing to make this sacrifice, the snakes do not appear and refuse to taste the dishes served there, they then believe great misfortune will strike that year (credunt se anno illo subituros magnam calamitatem).
The practice also seems to be widespread in Russia inasmuch as a Western ambassador visiting Moscow during the sixteenth century noted the existence of snake worship.
At the present time, there are still many idolaters in this region who nurture in their homes, like penates gods, snakes of a black and corpulent variety. . . . They are called “giwoites,” and on the assigned day they will slither through the house to the food prepared for them. The entire family is present to watch them with fearful respect until they see they have eaten their fill and returned to their nests. And if the inhabitants experience some reversals of fortune, they believe it is because their domestic snake-god was given a poor reception or ill fed.

First line game
Tagged by my lovely friend @rhyslahey
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all! See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favourite authors!
1) Perihelion | Sc*saac, 9.5k Draft
Monos and Probes are soulmates. That's what everyone says despite how many stories end in tragedy.
2) Swallow The Sun | Sc*saac 6k Draft
It was stupid the way Isaac had been captured.
3) To Rewrite The Stars You Must Have Courage | Haoting/Xigu Half baked idea I'll probably never finish tbh |
Haoting watches as Xigu smiles down at his phone, oblivious to the world around him, and he smiles too, just happy to exist here with him.
4) Can't Spell Never Without Ever | St*lia, 1.4k draft abandoned VDay fic agshsh |
Malia frowns at the giant Valentine’s Dance poster she'd just put up.
5) Home Ec | Sc*saac, 771 word draft, abandoned vday fic
"Isaac, did you set the oven to 450?" Scott asks.
6) Idk | Sc*nny abandoned oneshot, 192 word draft, winter/xmas themed fic |
Danny shivers against the cold as he waits for the bus along with his teammates.
7) idk yet | B*llarke smut fic, 796 word draft supposed to be my 100th fic
Clarke stares out the window of the house given to them by the people of Sanctum.
8) amor vincit omnia | Sc*saac, 4.7k draft, abandoned secret christmas present I was writing for you Rhys agshshs |
Isaac doesn't trust Theo Raeken from the moment he arrives, and it's the only thing - maybe the first thing - him and Stiles agree on.
9) Silver Moon | Allison/Malia fic, 778 word draft, Idk i kinda forgot about this one tbh asfhshd
Allison couldn't stand the returned Hale child from the moment they met.
10) To Walk Amongst The Stars | Trick, 2.9k draft, I started writing this when I was playing ME:A on Insanity and every now and then I remember it exists |
Dreams of a foreign land fill Nick Clark's head as he floats through space towards a new and unknown galaxy.
11) The Black In Our Wool Is From The Ashes Of All We Destroyed | Trick, 6.5k draft |
Nick stares at himself in the mirror, chanting this is me, this is me to himself, gripping the edges of the sink tightly
12) Not Interested | Sc*saac, 724 word draft |
"Not interested, thank you," Isaac said, sliding the keys to Stiles' jeep back across the kitchen counter before taking another bite of his waffle.
13) vamp au | Sc*dia au, 6.3k draft, just a half fic living in my drafts for now |
Lydia takes her fourth shot of the night, determined to numb the hurt her ex had left her, and Allison gives her a worried look.
14) Heat Waves | sc*saac, 1.4k draft |
Isaac stares at the door of his childhood home with a sort of anxiousness typically expected of visiting your family after a long time away, minus the family
15 ) beta!st*les fic | st*lia fic, fix it fic, basically St*les gets turned against his will and it has far reaching consequences. Isaac is there too and so is his fat crush on scott. Idk i come back to this occasionally but never get anywhere |
Stiles follows the pattern the guard walks in with his eyes, wondering why he kept hopping just before he turned.
That's all I'll share. Now all of us have learned that I often write down and play with every little idea in my head and often don't finish them asdddhshdj
I won't tag anyone but feel free to tag me if you want to do this!

Doing the “liveblog it as I go but post it later” thing because honestly that’s easier than juggling Youtube and Tumblr at the same time. Plus, it’s fun to be able to do this whenever rather than strictly “when I’m on Tumblr”. Anyway hopefully whatever reactions I’m about to have are amusing to ya’ll because I’m not gonna stop doing this.
…
Where were we- oh yes, fetching parts for Old Amnesiac of the Plot Vibes.
-Okay so the items have been acquired and at the two the movie actually shows being retrieved both NPCs make comments on how it’s a “tool for expert craftsmen” or “very specific applications”. Is the amnesiac some kind of mechanic?
….Hang on wait a second someone once told me Cid was in this game. Is this…?
…
Okay so he’s definitely a tinker/mechanic of SOME KIND because he could fix the thingie without even consciously knowing what he was doing. Which, according to the psych course I was required to sit through, is an ACTUAL THING that can happen to amnesiacs. Muscle memory remains even if the conscious memories are playing hooky.
…
Why is there a dead body just- randomly sprawled there on the ground in a graveyard. Shouldn’t it be buried by now? Or at least- not splayed everywhere like he just got killed? Oh wait is this the guy who owned the thingy the Amnesiac repaired? … Oooo the thingie is only common in Garlean territories, is Amnesiac a wayward Garlean? He seems very not-crazy tho…
And we’re off to fetch another tool.
How does this guy know EXACTLY what kind of hammer is needed to repair and alchemy pot/oven/thing and where to buy it?
Curiouser and curiouser. I’m enjoying the mystery enough that I’m almost not miffed we aren’t chasing after the Garlean’s who kidnapped Tataru and killed the Sylph.
…
The player is running another errand and CACTAUR. CACTAUR WITH A FLOWER ON ITS HEAD. I remember you from Dissidia Opera Omnia you little gremlin. You’re even worse than the normal Cactaurs. *Hisses*.
Ooooh so someone has a crush on our local Amnesiac?
And off to help transport our fallen comrades for burial. Wonderful.
This got morbid and depressing real fast.
*Whispers quietly* who the heck is Thal?
*Whispers louder* who is Azeyma?
Ooooh wait hang on are these some of those Twelve I remember being told about forever ago? Probably.
Off to ask for divine judgement I guess. Somehow I feel this won’t end well.
Nothing happened. Typical.
Oh noooo we have to go tell the Slyph’s family what happened I didn’t think a video game would include that detail nooooo.
…
IMPERIAL. HAVE AT THEE. LEAVE THE AMNESIAC ALONE.
Is it bad that I don’t trust this Father Illiud guy? Idk why and it’s probably just me being paranoid but I don’t trust him.
HEY LOOK IT’S ELF TWIN 1. Last time I saw him was at the … fancy festival I think? You know he’s important when he’s got a voice actor. Alphinaud, huh. Pretty sure the girl was Alisae? I think? They’re in Opera Omnia that’s really the most I know about them.
AMNESIAC IS CID I FREAKING CALLED IT.
Welp, tiny elf boi has recruited Cid to help the Scions and the player character to go throw hands with Garuda. I remember Garuda from the FFXV crossover. She was … Not Fun™ (for Noctis and Co at least. I, the over leveled player with 99 phoenix downs and elixirs and no issues with spamming them as needed, had a blast).
Also poor Cid. Elf Boi suddenly sweeps in and says “here’s your name and lost identity, come help me find your AIRSHIP that you totally have just btw so we can go fight a PRIMAL.”
Also also for a presumably old guy (at least I think so with the white hair and beard), Cid is Looking Good™ now that he’s out of the monk robes. Then again a lot of people in this world have white hair while young so he’s probably not that old.
…
Pfffffftt the airship was named Enterprise. Is that a Star Trek ref in the same franchise that keeps cameoing Biggs and Wedge from Star Wars? XD
…
Time to win over the prickly guards of the Observatory I guess. WoL shall sway them with persistence and useful fetch quest abilities.
Did someone just say heretics? *Interested noises*
Dude. I know you’re protective of your books but seriously lighten up. I’m not even gonna leave the building with it, we just need to know where the airship went. If security is that much of a problem have one of your apprentices/interns/whatever read the book FOR US and report back what we need to know. I’m sure you have apprentices here that could use a little brush up on their history in relation to random airship flybys…
…Aaah a rebellious underlibrarian. Lovely. What horrible monsters and/or blizzards must WoL face to win a look at your books this day?
Ixal. Of course it’s Ixal.
J o y.
…
……
*Inhales* WoL just SAVED YOUR LIFE FROM BIRDMEN. GET BACK HERE AND BE POLITE OR THIS “UNBELIEVER” IS GONNA YEET YOU OFF THE MOUNTAINSIDE SO HELP ME.
Fine. Whatever. Be that way. Have fun getting back without an escort.
…Don’t tell me we have to talk to the Snob to get info on the airship. Please.
…hgfhgfd politics incoming I can feel it.
Gonna stop there for now.

Amour Vincit Omnia / 16
The next morning was Thanksgiving and when Taehyung woke up, Akira was fast asleep with her cheek pressed against his chest and her right leg wrapped around his as she cuddle up to him.
After the whole episode at her father’s house, Taehyung drove them back to her mom’s place where Tonya demanded to know what happened once she saw the tears streaming down her daughter’s face. Akira was still pretty upset so Taehyung took over for her, explaining what had happened in the shortest terms that he could manage. Tonya was furious, rightfully so, and Taehyung almost wanted to smile as he realized that Tonya was who Akira had gotten her fierceness from. After Akira promised to talk to her mom later, Taehyung led her upstairs to her bedroom where Akira broke down into tears once again.
Taehyung wasn’t exactly sure how to feel. On one hand, he knew that Calvin and his close-mindedness was the cause of all of this but deep down, he couldn’t help but to feel like he had caused this crack to form in the relationship that Akira had with her father and that was a hard pill to swallow.
Realizing that he had to use the bathroom, Taehyung moved to get out of the bed but Akira whined against his chest and tightened her arms around him.
“I have to pee pretty girl,” he chuckled and she reluctantly moved her leg off of him as well as her arms.
“Hurry up,” she mumbled and he smiled to himself as he got out of the bed and walked over to the door, opening it and stepping into the hallway before gently shutting the door behind him.
After going to the bathroom, doing his business, and washing his hands, he stepped out of the bathroom only to literally run into somebody else.
“Akeem?” Taehyung wondered as he squinted his eyes in the dimly lit hallway.
“Hey Taehyung,” Akeem greeted him. “What are you doing up so early?”
“Bathroom,” Taehyung said as he pointed to the bathroom door behind him. “What about you?” He wondered as he looked Akeem up and down, noticing that he was fully dressed at 6am.
“Ah, I have a few girls who wanted to give me some thanks,” Akeem smirked, making Taehyung chuckle deeply. “Hey, how’s Kira doing?”
“She’s hurt,” Taehyung told him. “I think once her anger subsided, she realized what had happened and I think it’s hard on her.”
“I don’t know what she thought was going to happen,” Akeem said as he shook his head. “That man is deplorable and I’m so glad that I’m nothing like him.”
“Wait, Calvin’s your father too?” Taehyung asked and Akeem nodded. “The way that Akira told me, I just naturally assumed that the two of you had different fathers.”
“Nah, he’s my sperm donor too unfortunately,” Akeem muttered. “Our parents divorced when Akira was in her freshman year of college and I was only 12. Towards the end, our father treated our mom like shit and I can’t forgive him for that because I witnessed it all.”
“And Akira still has a relationship with him because she didn’t see it?” Taehyung questioned and Akeem nodded.
“That and she’s too damn forgiving to the wrong people,” he replied. “I haven’t seen that man in a good three years and I don’t plan to anytime soon.”
“After meeting him yesterday, that’s completely understandable,” Taehyung joked and Akeem smiled at him.
“Can you do me a favor?” Akeem asked and Taehyung shrugged before nodding. “Look out for Kira for me? And I mean really look out for her. She has the biggest heart and she’s gonna try and act like this whole thing with our dad doesn’t bother her but she’s gonna end up breaking eventually and I’d like to know that she has someone there for her.”
“Of course,” Taehyung smiled softly. “I’m always gonna look out for her.”
“Thank man,” Akeem beamed and they slapped hands, half hugging each other afterwards. “Well, I have to get going. I can’t keep the girls waiting.”
“And you also wanna get back before your mom finds out too, right?” Taehyung pointed out.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Akeem smirked before stepping around Taehyung and heading down the stairs. Taehyung just shook his head and walked down the hall to your bedroom door, opening it and stepping inside before shutting the door behind him.
..............................
“I just cannot believe the audacity of that man,” Tonya muttered in annoyance as she angrily slammed the door to the oven after taking a pan of macaroni and cheese out.
“Mommy, can we please just stop talking about it?” Akira pleaded as she finished putting sauce on the meatballs that her mother had cooked before beginning to mix them up.
“I can’t! Not only does he go and disrespect Taehyung, who I know was nothing but respectful to him even though we all know that he doesn’t deserve it, he upset you and made you cry,” Tonya ranted. “You know that I don’t play about my kids.”
“I know Mommy.”
“If it weren’t Thanksgiving, I’d go over there and really tell him something.”
“I know Mommy,” Akira repeated. “But you were right and I should’ve known better than to take Taehyung over there.”
“Your intentions were fine Kira,” Tonya assured her as she walked over to her, taking the spoon out of Akira’s hands and mixing the meatballs herself. “It’s your father being an asshole that caused the problem, not you or Taehyung.” A few seconds of silence passed between them as Akira watched her mother’s movements.
“Do you feel the same way?” Akira wondered quietly, finally asking the question that had been on her mind since late last night.
“About what?”
“About me dating Taehyung,” Akira clarified and Tonya stopped mixing to look over at her. “Does it bother you that he’s not black?”
“Oh my baby,” Tonya sighed as she quickly wiped her hands off onto a spare rag before setting them on Akira’s cheeks, looking into her eyes. “Of course it doesn’t bother me. I’ve always told you and your brother that I don’t care what your significant others may look like. As long as they make you happy, that’s all that matters to me.”
“And he does Mommy,” Akira nodded, feeling some tears beginning to cloud her vision.
“I know baby, I can tell by the way you look at him,” Tonya grinned, using her thumbs to wipe Akira’s tears away before they could fall down her cheeks. “He’s good for you, that much is evident. That’s why I don’t get how your father could react like that.”
“I know but its over and done with now,” Akira shrugged before taking a deep breath and reaching up to make sure that the wetness on her face was completely gone. “I just want to enjoy the rest of my visit here with you and Keem.”
“Alright love,” Tonya smiled. “Let’s get this food out there to the boys, yeah?”
..............................
“Alright you all, let’s say grace,” Tonya said as she held her hands out, Akira grabbing ahold of her left one and Akeem grabbing onto her right one. Akira took Taehyung’s hand in her left and Akeem reached across the table and grabbed Taehyung’s free hand.
“Dear Lord, thank you so much for this food that we are about to receive. We come together today to practice mindfulness and to remind ourselves about everything that we have in our lives. Even though we are human and often forget how fortunate we all are, you still love us anyway. Please bless the hands that have prepared this food and in Jesus name we pray, Amen.”
“Amen,” everyone repeated afterwards and everyone began to pass the food around, adding healthy amounts to their individual plates.
“How’s the food Taehyung?” Tonya asked him and Taehyung looked up at her as he chewed a large mouthful, only being able to give her a thumbs up since he didn’t want to talk with his mouth full.
“God, I missed your cooking Mommy,” Akira sighed in delight after she had a bite of her mother’s yams.
“There’s no soul food restaurant in that big city?” Tonya joked.
“As if there’s a restaurant that could even come close to your cooking,” Akeem pointed out and Akira nodded in agreement.
“Literally though,” Akira laughed.
“What do you have planned for your birthday this year Kira?” Akeem wondered.
“I’m not entirely sure yet Keem,” Akira shrugged. “Probably nothing special though, you know me.”
“Your birthday?” Taehyung interjected with a raised brow. “You didn’t tell me that your birthday was coming up.”
“She likes to downplay her day,” Tonya explained.
“It’s December 1st,” Akira told him. “And I’m not downplaying it. It’s just another day to me.”
“You should’ve told me,” Taehyung pouted and Akira laughed at his face.
“It’s not a big deal baby, really,” she swore before leaning over and pressing a quick kiss to his cheek. Taehyung was about to reply but his phone started to ring in his pocket. After pulling it out and looking at the screen, his eyes widened as he saw the caller ID.
“Uh, excuse me, I have to take this,” he said as he moved to stand up. “It’s business.”
“Feel free,” Tonya nodded.
“Go ahead baby,” Akira added and Taehyung smiled lightly before walking out of the dining room.
“Oh and speaking of birthdays,” Tonya said as she looked over at Akeem. “You sneak out of this house again, you won’t make it to your next one.”
“What?” Akeem gasped. “How did you even know that I left? Did Taehyung snitch?”
“I’m your mother and this isn’t my first rodeo,” Tonya chuckled. “Akira did it all the time and I’ve learned what the front door sounds like when it opens.”
“And Taehyung knew?” Akira asked.
“Yeah, I ran into him on my way out,” Akeem shrugged as he waved his hand. “But I just went to go hang out with Alicia.”
“It’s always just hanging out until someone gets pregnant,” Tonya said. “And I’ll kill you if you give me any grand kids before you graduate high school.”
“I’m 17 and in my last year of high school so if I got someone pregnant now, the baby would be born after I graduate so technically, I wouldn’t be breaking that rule,” Akeem explained and the death glare that Tonya gave him made Akira laugh out loud.
“Why do you always insist on stressing Mama out like that? You’re the reason that she has those grey hairs,” you joked.
“Nah, those are from age,” Akeem snickered.
“These are from wisdom, not stress or my age,” Tonya spoke up.
“Whatever makes you feel better Ma,” Akeem muttered and Tonya reached over, smacking the back of his neck which made him yell out in pain.
“Keep playing with me little boy,” Tonya warned and Akira smiled as she watched the two of them interact. Just then, Taehyung walked back into the dining room and Akira looked up at him, noticing the frown on his face.
“Everything ok?” She asked him and he just sighed heavily before nodding his head.
“Yeah, but I have some bad news. I have to go to Korea as soon as possible,” he revealed and Akira’s eyes widened. “There’s some issue with our board and all of our shareholders are freaking out so I have to go and figure out what’s going on.”
“Isn’t it Thanksgiving there too though?” Akeem questioned and Taehyung looked over at him.
“Koreans don’t celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time that Americans do so it’s just a normal day there right now,” he explained and Akeem nodded in understanding. Taehyung then looked down at Akira, reaching down and taking her hand in his.
“I hope you’re not upset,” he muttered.
“I am a little but I understand,” she replied honestly. “When are you gonna leave?”
“I was gonna go up and pack my stuff now,” he replied.
“I’ll come help you then.”
“No no baby, you don’t have to do that,” he shook his head. “You stay here and enjoy your family ok?”
“You sure?” Akira asked and he nodded before leaning down and pressing a kiss to her forehead.
“Ms. Tonya, thank you so much for hosting me, even though it was only for two days,” Taehyung chuckled.
“No problem sweetie, it was my pleasure. I hope you’ll come back to visit again,” she smile pointedly and Akira rolled her eyes playfully.
“Yes ma’am,” he agreed. “Akeem, it was nice meeting you.”
“Nice meeting you too dude and don’t forget what I asked you,” he reminded him and Taehyung nodded.
“I won’t,” he promised before looking back down at Akira. “I’ll come say goodbye to you before I leave, alright?” He said and Akira nodded before watching him walk away and hearing his footsteps going up the stairs.
“Oh great, now she’s gonna sulk for the rest of the time that she’s here,” Akeem teased and Akira pushed her leg out underneath the table and kicked him in the knee. “Ow! Ma!”
“Don’t call my name, you deserved it,” Tonya shrugged with a smile. “And don’t tease your sister. You’d feel the same way if you were in a committed relationship.”
“Yeah, doubt it,” he muttered before stuffing his mouth with more food. Tonya and Akeem continued to banter back and forth, and Akira only spoke up every once in a while as she tried to finish the food on her plate but she just couldn’t bring herself to. She really wasn’t seriously upset about Taehyung having to leave. She understood, she really did but she still didn’t want him to leave and definitely not all the way back to Korea.
When she heard his footsteps walking back down the stairs, she got up and excused herself before walking into the front hall, where Taehyung was standing with his suitcase at his feet and looking down at his phone.
“Going now?” Akira spoke up and he looked up from his phone, smiling sadly as he nodded his head.
“Come here pretty girl,” he beckoned as he put his phone into his jacket pocket and Akira walked over to him, giggling when he set his hands on her hips and pulled her forward so that her chest was pressed against his.
“Gonna miss you,” she whispered as she set her hands on his shoulders.
“Gonna miss you too. I’m sorry that I have to leave,” he apologized again.
“It sucks but I know you have to be a responsible empire owner,” she joked, making Taehyung laugh heartily.
“Oh, and I’m gonna have my plane fly back here to take you home to New York on Sunday so that you don’t have to worry about finding a flight,” Taehyung told her.
“Tae you don’t have to do that. I’m sure that I can find another flight back home.”
“It’s the holiday weekend and even if you did manage to find a flight, you’d probably have to pay a ridiculously high price for it,” he replied with a raised brow and Akira sighed. “Just let me do that for you.”
“Ok, ok,” she acquiesced as he leaned forward and pressed kisses all over her face, making her laugh loudly. When he stopped and she managed to get her laughing under control, they made eye contact before Taehyung pressed his lips to hers. The kiss quickly grew passionate, with Akira looping her arms around Taehyung’s neck as Taehyung used the grip that he had on her waist to pull her closer to him. When they finally did pull away, it was only because they both needed to breathe and they both smiled softly as Taehyung let his forehead fall against Akira’s.
“I love you,” Akira whispered into the small space between them and she could feel his pulse quicken from where her arms were around his neck. She almost wanted to take it back when he didn’t make any obvious moves to say anything back, but she wasn’t going to be apologetic for how she felt. She loved him and she had known it for a while now.
“I love you too,” he replied back with a wide grin. Akira looked up at him, using her fingers to play with the hair at the nape of his neck.
“Text me when you land?” She said and he nodded, pressing another kiss to her lips before pulling away.
“I’ll see you back in New York ok?” He said and she nodded, smiling softly as she watched him grab his suitcase and walk out of the house. She sighed dreamily until she heard a soft snicker from the other room.
“Ew, she’s in love,” Akeem huffed and Akira heard him scream along with a smack, so she figured that her mother had hit him again. Smiling widely, she just shook her head and walked back into the dining room.

Making Cato the Elder’s ‘Savillum’
Disclaimer: I’m an incredibly average baker who had never made cheesecake in her life up until this point. I’m sure there’s plenty of (better) adaptions of this recipe, but it was a fun challenge to work entirely from an Ancient Roman recipe with little to no modern help, so I haven’t seen them!
Cato’s De Agri Cultura
There are several different cheesecake recipes De Agri Cultura (also written De Agricultura), ranging from libum (a sort of savory cheesecake with bay leaves) to placenta (a sort of layered sweet cheesecake with several crusts), with many variations besides. Savillum most closely resembled what we think of as a cheesecake in the modern day, and is relatively simple in both process and ingredients.
Original Latin Text
Savillum hoc modo facito. Farinae selibram, casei P. II S una conmisceto quasi libum, mellis P. et ovum unum. Catinum fictile oleo unguito. Ubi omnia bene conmiscueris, in catinum indito, catinum testo operito. Videto ut bene percocas medium, ubi altissimum est. Ubi coctum erit, catinum eximito, melle unguito, papaver infriato, sub testum subde paulisper, postea eximito. Ita pone cum catillo et lingula.
English Translation
“Recipe for the savillum: Take 1/2 pound* of flour, 2 1/2 pounds of cheese, and mix together as for the libum**; add 1/4 pound of honey and 1 egg. Grease an earthenware dish with oil. When you have mixed thoroughly, pour into a dish and cover with a crock. See that you bake the centre thoroughly, for it is deepest there. When it is done, remove the dish, cover with honey, sprinkle with poppy-seed, place back under the crock for a while, then remove from the fire. Serve in the dish, with a spoon.”
(translation via Loeb Classical Library)
*Note: a Roman pound (libra) is not the same as a modern pound, 1 Roman pound = .725 modern pounds
**From the recipe for libum: “Bray 2 pounds of cheese thoroughly in a mortar; when it is thoroughly macerated, add 1 pound of wheat flour, or, if you wish the cake to be more dainty, 1/2 pound of fine flour, and mix thoroughly with the cheese.”
Recipe
Ingredients
2 1/2 roman pounds (1.8 modern pounds) (29 oz.) fresh goat cheese
1/2 roman pound (.4 modern pounds) (5.8 oz) wheat flour
1/4 roman pound (.2 modern pounds) (2.9 oz) honey
1 egg
oil for greasing
poppy seeds
Some notes on ingredients:
This recipe itself doesn’t specify goat cheese, however the other similar recipes for cheesecake that come before this do, so it seemed like a safe assumption; it’s also got a great flavor that comes though, and is in my opinion even nicer than cream cheese.
I used my own honey from our bees, so it was raw and closer to what the Romans would have used, but I don’t think store bought pasteurized honey would make much difference
The type of oil is not specified, however I used light olive oil, olive oil being something the Romans used plenty of, and light so it didn’t effect the flavor too much
Temperature
There are no temperature specifications here for the oven (a modern oven, I didn’t go as far as to find a Roman one). Being nervous about cheesecake, I made a compromise and looked into the Joy of Cooking cheesecake recipe, which specifies 500ºF (260ºC) for the first 10 minutes (give the oven time to preheat!) and 200ºF (93ºC) for another hour after that. My oven is finicky and ended up closer to 450ºF for the 10 minutes and 300ºF for the hour, however it baked very well and was done on time.
My Process
I skipped the instructions for braying the cheese, as it was store bought and pretty smooth already, and instead crumbled it straight into the bowl and began to knead the flour in.
At first it seemed like all the flour might not go in, but it does, and pretty perfectly at that; the result is a nice dough.
The egg and honey loosen the consistency of the dough (and make it sticky), but still smooth and fairly easy to handle. There are no instructions for adding the egg, but I beat mine before kneading it in, and added the honey afterwards.
I unfortunately don’t have an earthenware baking dish that has any sort of lid (for the crock); I had to compromise with pyrex (which does have a lid).
It does need pressing into place, as it holds it’s shape relatively well. The drawback of this is that there will be gaps and bubbles at the bottom of the dish if you’re not careful how you press it in (I wasn’t).
Ready to go into the oven!
The centre was a little soft, but the golden colour was surprising and pleasing. I added only a few tablespoons of honey to the top, however I think it’s meant to be much more; the cheese soaks up the honey much more than I’d thought and it’s nice to have it a little sweeter than it came out for me.
Remember to do as Cato says and use a spoon to serve! (I confess to using a knife after the first spoonful)
Conclusion
It tastes great! Seriously, I was surprised by how good it tastes! The taste of the cheese comes through in a really nice way without being overwhelming, the poppy seeds definitely work, it’s got a surprisingly good texture, and it definitely tastes like cheesecake.
Be warned that the cheesecake itself is not very sweet. If you prefer it a little sweeter, I would definitely add more honey to the dough initially, or put plenty on top before you put in back in the oven with the poppy seeds. However, if you want, like me, to do it exactly as stated, it’s never too late to put more honey over the top after you serve it, it still balances out very well!
#tagamemnon#this was fun to do!!#I'm going to try the placenta cheesecake recipe next and see how that goes#watch as I turn into the dreaded food blogger#also god I hope I didn't make any mistakes#I did edit but it was very long

Azores to Falmouth - or nearly
The Azores are lovely, and deserve much more than the few days we gave them. Another time, perhaps.
Horta is the main port of arrival, the marina full of boats which have had big adventures. The social atmosphere is very relaxed; everybody here has ‘been there, done it’ to a significant degree, and the normal tensions arising from watching new arrivals – do they know what they’re doing, can they handle their boat – simply don’t apply. It is difficult to explain – the nearest I can get is that when you pull in to a service station on the M1, there are no learner drivers. It’s a bit like that. A bit.
It is truly wonderful to get back to sensibly priced groceries, decent bread and cheese, and restaurants which don’t hustle you out at 9pm and expect huge tips regardless of the food, because the staff don’t get paid.
The Azores are volcanic: the centre of this island (Faial) is a huge caldera, which we drove up to in our little hire car, with John and Sue, and Carl. We circumnavigated the island, stopping to walk around the area of the 1950’s eruption, which inundated the old lighthouse and a small whaling village on the western end. Stopping for a great lunch of mussels, which Carl thought he didn’t like – disguised with prodigious amounts of garlic, they were a huge hit. Surprisingly green and rural, the island is charming, cattle everywhere. The architecture is Portuguese in style, but mitigated with a more subtle use of the highly patterned tiles we saw in the mainland.
We left Horta on Monday – 17th- after waiting for a predicted blow to pass through. It was a bit of a non-event in Horta, but we weren’t the only ones to play it cautious. Stopping at the fuel dock was a bit of a game, with three boats already in place, and a wind sufficient to pop fenders on the inside boat, a crippled French boat with a broken stay – and, it has to be said, rubbish fenders. Still, the weight of three other boats pressing him into the dock under the influence of 20 knots was a bit much. The marina seemed blithely unconcerned; this is clearly quite normal.
We are now 400 miles out, about 1/3 of the way to Falmouth. The weather has been all over the place, with some flat calm, some fog, and now some windy, rolly conditions, with winds gusting up to 30 knots, and seas up to 4m. The boat is behaving very well, the hydrovane (mechanical wind-driven steering system) coping with most of what gets thrown at it, although you have to be ready to take over for the squalls. Thankfully, these mostly lie in wait for Carl’s watch, to the extent that he is the only one who preps for his watch by putting full oilies on.
Sleep deprivation has taken its toll on tempers - mine particularly. Doing 4 hour shifts nominally gives each person two eight-hour periods off-watch, which should be plenty, but when the boat is rolling hard, it is difficult to get to sleep and then stay asleep long enough to clear the deficit. Fitting in communal eating times also cuts into it.
The food has generally worked out ok, if I say so myself. Homemade bread and cakes (all right, the cake was from just-add-an-egg packets) most days, and cooked-from-scratch dinners most days. The Omnia (stovetop oven) has been brilliant, as has the pressure cooker. The boat oven has hardly been used.
Overall, though, I am done with long passage-making. The magical milky-way star-lit nights with phosphoresce sparkling in the wake as we bob along in a gentle breeze are an absolute delight, but sleep deprivation, uncertainties over the weather, and the physical challenge of cooking and doing the normal stuff of life while being thrown about are the norm – glad I’ve done it, but don’t need to do it again.
Really, really looking forward to getting to Falmouth; family and friends, a long list of jobs, and the prospect of some paid work for both of us; me in acoustics, while Mike will be looking for something boat-related. Berthing master at a handy south-coast marina, with a free berth thrown in, would suit. Not holding our breath, but no chance if you don’t ask!
26 June 2019
We’ve turned towards A Coruna, in the face of persistent north-easterly winds, and the threat of a full gale in the Falmouth area a few days ahead. Now making slow but steady progress, hard on the wind. Winds 20-25 knots, occasionally up to 30, from just north of east.
We were getting advice to divert from Falmouth to either (a) a point south of Ireland, then east, or (b) head direct to Camaret (Brittany, near Brest). In the event, neither option was really tenable – (a) put us in the path of a still unknown quantity, which at times threatened to be quite nasty, and (b) simply did not work – we could not make a course which put us anywhere close. All thoroughly fed up, some more than others; Coruna was the nearest available and attainable land. Carl can fly to London from there, and we will regroup and sort ourselves out before continuing home. So very, very ready to be not on the boat for a while.
27 June 2019
Motoring the last few miles into Coruna. Boring. And a slightly anticlimactic end to our Atlantic odyssey. We expect to arrive in the very early morning, perhaps 4am, and will probably anchor until daylight.
28 June 2019
So we got here, eventually. Marina Coruna, north-west Spain. Tintin got in first, and were anchored just outside the marina when we arrived at about 6am local time. No dramas, apart from the night of no sleep for Mike, as the 50-mile (=10-hour) band around this corner of Spain is very busy with large shipping, and the alarm kept tripping every few minutes, all night. No danger, plenty of warning, but little chance of proper sleep. I got off best, lying down at 11pm, getting up for a few short-lived non-events, then up properly at about 5am to help get in to the marina.
We crawled into the first appropriate berth, had breakfast, and bodged around, all very grumpy and sleep-deprived, until it was time to check in, which -as usual- took ages.
Carl and I set about sorting the inside of the boat; laundry, damp cushions and mattresses, grime everywhere. Mike got back eventually, and bodged about some more, in a foul mood, before conceding that the problem was lack of sleep. Carl went off on his own to explore, his one-and-only chance to check out this part of Spain, and, with luck, pick up some of the special fids (rope-splicing tools) he had been coveting since Mike showed him ours.
Partly revived by about 3-hours on the saloon sofa, Mike and I had a beer and a light lunch in the marina bar, while the first of several loads of washing did its thing. We bumped into Carl, on his way back to the boat for his passport so he could check in to his flight – he looks pretty dreadful – almost as if he’d had no sleep.
We were delighted to find Barbara and Simon (Cartagena friends) in situ in the marina, and I was able to have a coffee and a catch-up of sorts, promising to make a better go of it sometime in the UK – their boat is destined for a mooring off West Mersea! They fly home tomorrow, having decided that the current (wrong for sailing north) weather is set to last for at least a week. We shall see.
And phoning home, of course – got hold of everybody to some degree or another, only to find that Rachel and David had planned a big surprise arrival party in Falmouth, which we have utterly harpooned by not going there at the appointed hour. So very disappointing, but deeply touched that they wanted to make the effort.
So – we’ve been stuck in the Bahamas, stuck in Puerto Rico, St Thomas, the Azores, and now Spain. So far, Spain is by far and away the most amenable.
1 July 2019
Weather here is cloudy, and it has been quite cold today, with blustery winds from the north. Still no sign of any change in the conditions which would allow us to head out.
Have wasted most of the day watching films on TV, disheartened after finding all my stored-away warm clothes damp and covered in mildew. Some may be revived by a wash, but some are clearly trashed. Nothing valuable, just really, really annoying.
We had a lovely evening with Jacquie and Kevin off Tintin last night; good food, good company, lively conversation.
Intensely frustrated to be here, and not back in the UK – things to do, people to see… spending time each day on weather sites, but still failing to find anything useful.

i'm not stress baking, okay? i can't be stress baking because i'm not stressed. i just made the custard pie (yesterday) and then the creme brulees (this morning) bc i needed to finally use up the egg yolks from last week's angelfood cake and the spare crust that's been in the freezer since easter... and the creme brulee recipe was so simple and i have been thinking about chocolate chip muffins for a couple weeks and it's chilly and rainy so it's nice to have the oven on so i did those too... and then i figured i'd better do the cheese bread again before the asiago went off so then i did that. and now i'm done. it's not stress baking.
#vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas#Things That Look Delicious#it was just all very convenient! they even all use the same oven temperature!

Small Lot Beach House
With interiors by Anne Michaelsen Design, built by Patterson Custom Homes and with architecture by Brandon Architects (recently featured here), this small lot beach house is located in Corona Del Mar neighborhood of Newport Beach, California.
According to the designer, the homeowners (an Orange County couple with adult children that live outside of the home) were looking for a relaxed California seaside/coastal look without being too obviously beachy. They wanted the home to be comfortable enough for everyday living, while still being elegant enough for entertaining guests or throwing a party. The homeowners wanted seamless indoor-outdoor living throughout the home which is achieved by steel doors that completely open up onto the front and side yards and a rooftop lounge with several seating/entertaining spaces, a dining table, and outdoor kitchen/BBQ which has views of the Pacific Ocean and beautiful Corona Del Mar.
Additionally, it was important to them to have interesting and unique interior pieces and styling in order to set the home apart from other similarly designed homes in the area. They love shades of lavender and purple, which you will find throughout the home sometimes in unexpected ways (for example, the marble shower has hints of purple). To complete the seaside look, the designer complemented purple with blues and greens in paint color, furniture, and decor throughout the home.
Find a comfy chair and have a great time seeing this beach house!
