What Do Women Actually Want From Maternity Fashion?
From surviving the rigours of labour to how to rid your mind of that horrific birth story your colleague told you, to whether you and your partner will ever agree on a name, being pregnant provides one with more than enough scenarios to fret about. Wardrobe worries might seem superficial compared to the massive changes you’re going through but look a little closer and they’re very much intertwined.
The past year has seen celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski, Chloë Sevigny, Gigi Hadid, Jodie Turner-Smith and Emma Roberts, and influencers like Vashtie and Marawa making fashion statements of their baby bumps. Meanwhile Nike and SKIMS unveiled dedicated maternity ranges. Is it finally possible to dress well while expecting? “For the longest time, maternity wear had been relegated to the back of brands’ minds, and expectant mothers had little choice when dressing their ever changing bodies,” explains Lyst’s retail data expert Morgane Le Caer. Suddenly, “highly scrutinised celebrity pregnancies shone a spotlight onto maternity fashion” and inspired a change in the market. Le Caer says that while the category has expanded to include more choice, influencers wearing non-maternity clothes while pregnant proves there is still a gap in the market for trend-led ranges.

Art director Africa Daley-Clarke of @thevitamindproject has three children and honed her style to be adaptable to pregnancy, breastfeeding and “the never-ending fourth trimester”. Mixing oversized styles and her favourite ‘slow fashion’ brands allowed her to avoid maternity wear altogether (with the exception of bras). Africa wears Monica Cordera trousers – a Spanish brand with timeless wide-legged looks that come in one size, adjustable to fit UK sizes 6 to 14 (not size-inclusive but useful if you fall within those smaller sizes) – teamed with oversized shirts and knitwear like Misha and Puff popcorn sweaters.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6f40cae105d34a92d6336d98fac557a5/975330c905375d74-23/s540x810/128d8ec875c0bb2642b07c89c86985f2cb2124c8.jpg)
Blogger and podcaster Olivia Purvis of @livpurvis was able to adapt her day-to-day wardrobe while pregnant with her first baby as her taste runs to “smock dresses or A-line vintage maxi dresses – both of which work well with some sturdy tights”. She continued browsing secondhand shops, sizing up and “typically picking things that wrap, or have button-downs”. Olivia loved independent brands like April Meets October, Clary and Peg and Moon Mama Vintage, as well as Monki on the high street, but regretfully had to step away from her “impractical pie-crust Laura Ashley vintage favourites”.
Fashion designer Doone Murphy launched her own line, Doone London, to solve the problem of breastfeeding without losing her personal style. Doone, who describes herself as “dress-mad, wearing dresses every day of the year”, found herself breastfeeding in the bathroom at events as her outfits needed removing so that she could nurse. She created a range of super feminine, printed maxi dresses (not specifically maternity wear) with button-down fronts for easy access, suitable for – though not limited to – breastfeeding.
Besides oversized styles, form-fitting garments like knit separates also accommodate a changing body, notes author and speaker Katherine Ormerod, who’s been through three pregnancies. “I wore a lot of ribbed knit skirts and trousers,” she says, “stretch, shirred and ribbed dresses and separates from Rixo, H&M and Club Monaco in my usual size, which clad me for the full 40 weeks.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d7ca6fe256091ef8403a2952ec8d68dd/975330c905375d74-4f/s540x810/8d9750f60718e0312ccd01519305d672f4a2b1fe.jpg)
Dressing your bump for formal situations can be trickier. Katherine recommends “Isabella Oliver – I love their stretch dresses, they fit so well and have taken me through all three pregnancies. It’s worth investing in a really good piece that can act like a blank canvas for your regular jackets and coats.” Alternatively, simple black trousers and an accommodating white button-down shirt work well with a smart coat or jacket, whether or not you can fasten it.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/925b79a660a798ca00843ee6cae02ba6/975330c905375d74-23/s540x810/a43ed24bd5c0f5f76c04daa4814ef0ea9e1c7b72.jpg)
Plus-size women have a harder time of pregnancy dressing, as writer and editor Marie Southard Ospina explains. After a relatively straightforward experience of wearing her “usual swing dresses” with her first child, “during my second pregnancy I started showing earlier and gained much more weight in my belly, as well as elsewhere. I’m a UK size 24/26 and had to contend with the lack of plus-size maternity wear and that options designed for a pregnant person’s changing body weren’t available.” As a result, Marie adapted regular clothes. “I sized up and just accepted the fact that they’d be ill-fitting and snug around my tummy. I found one miracle jumpsuit on ASOS Curve that fit well in all the right places, that I adored.” Her other favourite brands are Loud Bodies and Isolated Heroes. “Independent brands and designers often make the most interesting pieces in size fat. My style is mixed but I love gaudy, loud pieces, as well as pin-up, vintage-inspired silhouettes.”
Carmen Zolman, senior design director at Nike, had multiple requirements to fulfil when working on the brand’s blockbuster maternity line. Their starting point was an analysis of more than 150,000 body scans of women globally to determine how the body grows during pregnancy. “We also worked closely throughout the design process with 30 female athletes, elite and everyday, who were either pregnant or post-partum, to listen to their needs and gather their input and ideas,” she explains. The entire design process took more than three years and tested more than 70 different materials to apply the right one to every area. From her own pregnancy experience, Zolman remembers “being in the locker room and not feeling great about what I was wearing. Most of the options had ruching on the side, uncomfortable materials and the cuts just weren’t flattering. Bad design should never be a barrier for a woman to stay active and healthy, especially during and after pregnancy.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6cfba6a078c88e379ae6ce2828dd8858/975330c905375d74-6b/s540x810/a6ad92db17bf1dd35f22c2edb1275318a03d5528.jpg)
From a financial and sustainability point of view, it makes sense to work with what you have and buy only what you’ll want to keep in your wardrobe for longer than six months. “Sustainability should be a key consideration for any brand developing maternity wear,” says Francesca Muston, VP of fashion at trend forecaster WGSN. “The window of use is so short compared with the length we should be aiming for the lifespan of any product.” She believes that adaptable products which can be worn and modified through pregnancy and beyond, with consideration for breastfeeding, post-operation comfort and washable materials are essential.
Vintage dealer and curator Selena Williams of @Selenasshop__ has continuously dressed in colourful vintage pieces during her pregnancy. “My pregnancy journey has been a lovely time to experiment with different looks and styles to match my ever changing, growing body. Bright colours have boosted my mood and my top pregnancy wardrobe must-haves are comfy high-waisted leggings, trousers with elasticated waistbands, oversized knitwear and dungarees. At the beginning of my pregnancy I googled maternity trousers and leggings, only to find boring, overpriced pieces.” Her advice? “Buy a few sizes bigger! There are tons secondhand that won’t cost you the earth.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9ad813fcda6ef7e6a3d2463899fa8b73/975330c905375d74-46/s540x810/913de9f29c6c7d778ab78344cf7cd9e91e90bcfb.jpg)
Pregnancy, and early motherhood even more so, is like a tunnel out of which you emerge a different person. “After having my eldest, I actively rebelled against the notion that mothers should dress in respectable or modest clothing,” Marie says. “I dyed my then bum-length hair bright poppy red, broke out dark, punkier lipsticks and wore my gold satin trench to the Co-op. I didn’t want to lose myself and my love of sartorial expression, and my look became even more extra.” The second time around, though, “I was just so tired. I had a toddler and a baby, plus work (as I’m self-employed, I couldn’t take extended mat leave). I lost the energy to play with clothes and makeup, and found myself in a leggings-and-hoodie routine.”
Africa describes being “very intentional with my wardrobe. For the most part, I’ve always invested in good quality, transitional pieces.” She adds: “I’ve embraced the fact that my body has never stopped shifting in the 30 years I’ve had it. Pregnancy is no exception and there’s no need to hold on to hope of returning to an older version.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/606c70f7c37095378e5ca1a5d603481c/975330c905375d74-b0/s540x810/29f481267a4139a5a0327b8b24c56087718c556b.jpg)
Katherine observed how fluctuations in shape can throw your style. “Not pregnant I’m a 32B bust but when breastfeeding I’m a 34E, which can be disorientating. It took me well over a year to get ‘back’ to my old size and even then my body was different,” she explains. “It’s hard to feel the mojo to wear super sexy things when you’re depleted, leaky and fricking exhausted! But it comes back with a little time.”
“What you wear can have a huge impact on how you feel and after your body has and is continuing to change throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding, it’s so important to feel your best in a good quality piece of clothing,” Doone says. “I think there’s a big hole for well made, elegant and sustainably and ethically made maternity clothes. I hope I can help fill a little part of that with my dresses.”
Despite a slew of well-heeled celebrities and influencers showing us how to style your bump, and brands offering up impressive dedicated maternity collections, there’s still a gap between what pregnant people want to wear and what’s available. The lack of maternity jeans (an item it’s hard to continue wearing in regular size) in styles other than skinny came up again and again when talking to women about what they want to see from the market, while size-inclusive maternity wear is a real blind spot. Then again, a little creativity (the elastic band trick is a much-loved hack for good reason) plus trial and error in styling pre-pregnancy favourites may be just as good a solution – for the sake of our wallets and our planet.

Blood Drives in Cannon County for over 60 years.
It has been said that the Lions Club drives are the best in the Tennessee Valley Region Blood Services area, which includes all of Tennessee, parts of Kentucky, and Alabama.
The extra effort put forth by the Lions Club has little to do with it. The Woodbury Lions Club has a committee of members that work together to help insure that everything runs smoothly, along with community volunteers who like to help out.
Some of the volunteers have more experience working with blood drives that the actual Red Cross staff who go out daily working with blood drives within the area.
Committee chairmen’s Patsy and Carl Hirlston and Bobby Bogard with committee members Ken and Artie Jean McIntyre, Lois Larimer, Clyde Thomas, Nolan Northcutt, Robert Jennings, Charlie Brown, Clyde and Kitty Bush, Chris Brushaber, Danny Miller, Cliff Swoape, Andy Jacobs, Doug Combs, and Gina Mitchell, all work together along with community volunteers of Bessie Miller, Orval and Esther Gray, Juanita Burks, Cathey Parker, Betty Harder, Shirley Borren, Jane Jennings, Grace Young, Nile Young, Della Young, Robert Young, Kay Campbell, Carol Davenport, Bobbie Henline, Jim Henline, Betty Paschal, Ann Todd, Mary Sue Vinson, and Mary Nelle Hillis too create a professional staff that assist members of the American Red Cross staff.
The Lions Club assigns a task of greeting donors and signing them in, handing out water and assigning donors with a number.
Copies of the Cannon Courier are provided for donors to read before or after their donation.
Red Cross provides snacks and the Woodbury Lions Club has additional snacks such as: a one-of-a-kind trail mix, peanut butter and crackers, baloney and crackers, and cheese and crackers.
A staff works in the canteen area who assist the donors after they have donated by getting them a drink of juice, water, soda, or coffee and then sitting with them and talking. They also watch the donor to see if the donors face color changes or if their arm starts bleeding from where the donor had given blood.
Woodbury Club also keeps records of each donation and awards donors with pins and Certificates when completing gallon donations. Along with taking pictures of donors receiving awards and being pinned with a gallon donation pin, plus having members of the Lions Club calling and reminding donors of upcoming blood drives also adds a little bit more to why Cannon County Blood Drives are better and produces more regular donors than other areas which has a larger population.
Woodbury Lions Club host six blood drives a year, always the third Thursday in January, March, May, July, September, and November. Each blood drive is noon until six pm except May’s drive, which runs from 9 am until 6 pm. May’s blood drive is a donor appreciation drive, and most of the businesses in Cannon County donate door prizes.
In the last five to six years, each donor was able to win three of four items because of the generosity of the businesses and their support of the Lions Club and wanting to reward the true everyday heroes of Cannon County, those who give of themselves to help save the lives of others. In most cases, they are saving the lives of people who they do not know.
On May 20th, 2010 the following businesses provided door prizes for the heroes of Cannon County: A Touch of Home Flower’s & Gifts, Arts Center of Cannon County, Auto Zone, Birdsong Adhesives, Boyd’s Garage, Briar Rose Flowers and Gifts, Bromley/Jennings Automotive, Cannon County Chiropractic, Cannon Market, Captain D’s, CareAll, Cell Plus, Coco Tan & Spa, Chilangoes Mexican Restaurant, Curves, Cutting Edge Hair Salon, D J’s Pizza and Steakhouse, Family Dentistry Deason & Bucher, Farm Bureau Insurance, First National Bank, Flower Occasions, Gina’s Boutique, Hardee’s, Hayes Bros Auto Care, Hibdon’s Body Shop, Higgins Car Wash, J P’s Fine Swine Bar-B-Que, Jennings Jewelers, Joe’s Place, Legendary Cuts, Lightwriters Photography, Lions Pizza Den, The Millennium Hair Salon, Moonlite Drive-In, NAPA, The Old Feed Store, One Stop Market, Parsley’s Market & Deli, Paul Reed’s Furniture, Paul’s Auto Service, Piggly Wiggly, Potter’s Ace Hardware, Quick Shop Market, Reed’s Building Supply, Regions Bank, Roger Hindman Body Shop, Scavenger Hunt Flea Market, Scavenger Hunt Trading Post, The Scoreboard, Shirt Shack, Shotgun County Pawn & Gun, Smitty Tire Shop, Stewart’s Printing, Stone Gait Tack and Feed, Subway, West End Tobacco Store, Woodbury Auto Express, Woodbury Insurance Agency, and Woodbury Lawn & Garden. Every donor and volunteer received a promotional ink pen from DTC, a pillbox from Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Cooperation, Chap Stick from FirstBank, a value meal card from Sonic, and a 3 pound bag of stone ground corn meal from The Readyville Mill.
The Red Cross also provided promotional items and the Woodbury Lions Club provided $10 gift certificates and a grand prize of $100 gift card.
It is very hard to find another community that has so many businesses that support a civic club as much as the ones in Cannon County.
Most all the businesses give support to the Woodbury Lions Club for sponsorship of the Lions Club Horse Show, White Cane donations, and door prizes for the donor appreciation Blood Drive. Without support from the local businesses, the Woodbury Lions Club would not be able to do as much as it does within the community, state, country, and world. Local businesses are one of the leading reasons why Cannon County Blood Drives are so much better that anywhere else in the state.
Another reason and probably the number one reason the blood drives are the best anywhere is the volume of regular donors in Cannon County. In any community only a certain per cent are eligible to donate and of that per cent only about 3 to 5 percent actually donates, but the donors in Cannon County has a much higher percent.
This is not due to the Lions Club and its part, nor the businesses and its part, but it is the individual donor and the way of life in Cannon County, the way most have been raised to want to help others in need in any way they can.
The mentality of the average person in Cannon County is to serve in any way they can. This mentality is one of the reasons Woodbury Lions Club is one of the largest clubs in the state.
It is why the businesses give as much as they do, and why so many volunteers do jobs within the county for little or no pay. The parents, schools and churches within the community teach the children from an early age of the importance of giving back to the community in which they live and the lesson that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
This is why Cannon County has had over 360 donors in the past 2-½ years. Woodbury Lions Club and the American Red Cross both use fiscal years that begin on 1 July and end 30 June.
The following is a list of local heroes who gave during the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Those donating Double Red Blood Cells count as two donations, the max number of times any one can give in a fiscal year in whole blood or double red cells is 6. The number that follows a persons name is the amount of pints given as of 30 June 2010.

The Woodbury Lions Club has received several awards of appreciation from the American Red Cross for their support of the Community Blood Program, and there is a lot of speculation as to why a small community does so well on the blood drives.
A lot of the credit is given to the Lions Club for putting out an extra effort.
Some credit is given for having good media coverage with the Cannon Courier, the Cannon Wire, and WBRY radio. Some credit is given for the support given by the businesses in Cannon County.
Any community can have a civic organization that puts forth the extra effort, and have good media and local businesses supporting them, but they don’t have the attitude and dedication of serving others that is instilled into Cannon Countians from birth until death.
The Woodbury Lions Club expresses heartfelt gratitude to all the media, businesses, and donors for exceeding the yearly goals set forth by the Red Cross based on past history.
It is so great to live among so many heroes. Likes: 7 Viewed:

And just like that it’s almost October (I think I have whiplash from how quickly September flew by, haha!)… this can only mean one thing, it’s time for the next monthly instalment of Daisy’s weekend reading! 😉
In case you’re a new reader (hello & welcome to my little corner of the internet!); my monthly weekend reading list includes lots of links to inspiring and interesting articles & blog posts, videos, podcasts, Instagram feeds I’m loving and more, that I’ve enjoyed lately. Okay, so let’s dive right in… make yourself comfortable, brew a cup of tea and enjoy!

One of my favourite UK bloggers, Liv Purvis has been writing some lovely blog posts about her beautiful wedding ceremony (the lovely couple got married earlier this year but September is ‘wedding month’ on her blog What Olivia Did). Not only is her wedding dress an absolute dream, it’s pastel pink and made of tulle, every little detail is superb and suits the couple’s taste to a tee. I also adore her honest and inspiring blog post about choosing a wedding dress that is your personal style and ‘taste’. Needless to say, Liv looked like a real life princess on her big day!
The Kate Spade S2020 fashion show was beyond – I’ve been endlessly scrolling through their beautiful Instagram feed during fashion week and wish I had the budget to buy their pastel and floral print designs, haha! A girl can daydream…
I love the sound of Mecca Cosmetica’s latest launch called ‘weekend skin’ hyrda skin tint – from the reviews I’ve read online, the formula sounds like a very lightweight product with a subtle glow… not to mention, their marketing campaign and blogger PR release for this launch was divine – you can watch it on their Instagram if you’re interested.
The absolute ICON that is Taylor Swift recently did another interview with Rolling Stones magazine and I love it. She’s such an inspiring woman in so many aspects of her life.
Carissa Smart’s beautiful typography and lettering projects are a MOOD. It’s no secret I adore inspirational quotes and she’s seriously hit the nail on head with these words of wisdom…
Also, another one of my favourite luxury fashion bloggers, In The Frow recently got married and their wedding was a DREAM – a week in a chateau in France… her bespoke couture dresses and designer ‘daytime’ outfits and accessories, a beautiful location, all the little personalised details and more! Of course, I’ve already watched their wedding video on YouTube and also loved the short documentary they made about making of a Couture Bridal Gown with Phillipa Lepley… there’s also a lot of lovely blog posts on InTheFrow sharing more stunning photographs from their wedding and more details! Swoon…
I’m excited to watch the new film ‘Knives Out’ – it has an amazing cast and I enjoy the suspense of watching murder mysteries (apparently it’s a modern take on Agatha Christie, yes please!) The trailer already has me intrigued…
The lovely Rolly Mag recently created a discount code directory on her beauty blog and oh my word is it a good one! She definitely knows what’s up when it comes to bargin hunting and sales, hahaha!
I just discovered the Salty Octopi memes account on Instagram and relate to so many of these it’s not even funny, hahaha! I recommend following their feed if you’re looking for a laugh.
I may have just found the cutest little bucket hat for summer from Sportsgirl…
