Do you have any fics in the works? Tell us about them!
Looking forward to any other writer's upcoming fics? Tell us about them too!
🤦🏻♀️ yep. My WIP folder has over seventy ideas/fics/pieces of series/and tons of pic prompts. I've had weeks of writer's block with only an occasional flicker of inspiration 😑
I'm trying to finish up some of those but my brain is not cooperating. The headaches aren't helping either 🤦🏻♀️
Fics/series in the works:
Two Thomas Hunt x OC*Amanda series called Worth the Wait and Stepping Forward. Both are angsty so far 🤷🏻♀️ but if I can ever get the wording right it will have happy endings 🤣 I'm also attempting to continue my Regency Era RCD AU series, None But You, in the process.
A few Thomas Hunt drabbles also are mixed in that folder 😂
A TRR Olivia series where Liam abdicates to be with Riley thus making our favorite duchess the Queen of Cordonia.
Part two to L-O-V-E
Requests for Liam x Riley and Maxwell Beaumont x OC*Sherry Alcantar that I promise I'm working on. And a couple for my While We're Young AU of characters that were requested months ago. Yes, there will be more glimpses into a couple of princes and their particular ladies and Jackson x Nicky.
An Open Hearts series called Mixed Signals (my first ever 😂) with my F!MC. Chris deals with feelings for Tobias, Ethan, and Bryce. It would start after the attack in Book 2. Though honestly I'm thinking of scrapping all of it to just write the actual storyline I've had in my mind with all the Tobias Carrick x Chris Valentine drabbles I'm working on 🤦🏻♀️ Definitely a happier storyline for those two, LOL!
A Perfect Match drabble with Damien and Nadia.
And my first ever Laws of Attraction drabble for my M!MC x Aislinn Tanaka 🤞 Hopefully it will turn out okay. I got inspired when I decided to restart the series and go a Male MC route 😂
And as always, I'm behind on reading fics from everyone I follow. Life keeps getting in the way of me being able to binge and when I do find time to open Tumblr up, I try and focus on that blasted Drafts folder.

Okay, Liv. Stop writing on Tumblr. 🤣🤣
what’s the point of saying you’re “dressed to kill” if you’re not even going to wear ONE little dagger strapped to your thigh? not even a single poison ring on the finger where the engagement ring given to you by your recently deceased husband used to sit? not even a concealed blade in the heel of one of your boots? commit or quit

T.T.K. Chapter 22 “Say Cheese/You?!”
oA/N: Wow it’s been a while huh? Well in about 4 minutes it will officially be my birthday. Goodness! I remember last year being so determined to finish this be my birthday (insert face palm emoji here lol) Just one quick thing about this chapter the reason it has 2 titles is because I put a bit of an insert from chapter 23 Again hank you all for your support and if you are reading The Guest I should have Ch. 9 up before Monday I also plan to update my Masterlist soon.
Rating: Mature Audience only please
Word Count: 2700+ It’s a read...get comfy lol
Summary: With Mick captured what answers will Olivia and Liam get can they live with what the find out?/ Has Olivia finally found Boss?
The king's sleep were chancy these days. Since his father's murder the word "betrayal" never meant so much. Now it was like a bad taste in his mouth: static and tormenting. It wasn't until Liam followed his guards into Olivia's dungeon that his nightmares finally became reality. The sight alone knocked him back a step. There lying on a slab in a dark room was a large man riddled in small cuts from shoulder to ankle. It was the man from the photo, one of the men from the attack and if Bastien's theory was right, the man she hired to kill him. Could Olivia really do this? Could she be this dark? Would it be him on this table next? Then one question he'd been asking himself every night before sleep eventually took him, could she hate him this much?
"Why is he still restrained?"
"We were waiting for you, Your Majesty." Bastien states "He is the Duchess' henchman after all."
"Ha! I'm what now?" Mick wanted to cackle but he thought better to play this right.
"Are you willing to testify that Duchess Nevarkis hired you to assassinate me?"
"Red? Oh...oh yeah! That bi-- Boss hired me. Just look at what she did to me after fouling up the job. Just let me go, please and I'll tell you all the things she paid me to do to you."
"Your Majesty what are you doing?" Bastien cautions watching as his king struggles to unleash the hit man.
"If you all won't release him I will."
Mick tried his best to hide the grin growing. He was never one to leave a job unfinished and mere breaths away, freeing him no less, was one of his biggest yet unfinished jobs to date.
"Can I touch your belly?" Hana asks her hand already hovering over Riley's stomach .
"Sure but we won't feel her kick till a couple more weeks."
"Her?!!! It's a girl?!!!!!!!!" Hana squeals.
"We don't know that." Drake sits next to them at the breakfast table handing his wife a small fruit plate."Riley here is just wishful thinking, and also setting herself up for disappointment when she finds out my son is in there."
"Oh so who's wishful thinking now?" Maxwell chuckles sitting next to him "So how far along are you?"
"About 15 weeks. We have a doctor's appointment in 2 weeks to put this debate to rest."
"Well that's just in time for my soiree."
The friends at the table all turn to see Neville standing before them shifting from one foot to the other."I just---I wanted to invite you...all of you to my estate for my year end event."
"Ummm...." someone mutters as the gang all look to each other in confusion.
"Ril--I mean Duke and Duchess Walker. I would like to formally and personally invite you." He hands black envelopes sealed with boar sigil stamp. "You could come and announce whether Cordonia's 1st member of our next generation of royals will be a duke or duchess."
"You want to throw us a gender reveal?" Riley shakes her head in disbelief "What with the whole duel and--"
"Water under the bridge. Please come. I would like to make amends for how I've treated you...all of you." looking to them with humble eyes.
"Sure. We'll be there." averting from the seething look of her husband Riley focuses on the beaming smile of Neville as he heads to the next table.
"Sure?! Riley we are not going to that party. For as long as I've known that man he's never allowed me anywhere near Cormery Isle much less that party. It's probably a death trap."
"Drake's right." Maxwell chimes in.
"Thank you... Max." Drake's eyebrow raise in surprise.
"Yeah he's going to bore us to death!" Maxwell states opening the invitation to read it while Drake face palms "We'd have more fun spending New Year's in a broom closet. Neville usually only invites 1 st born royals you know those who are next in line to their family's title. He has NEVER invited me. Once I went thinking Bertrand's invitation was for me. BIGGEST mistake of my life. There wasn't even fireworks!"
"Look I hate to say this but Neville's right. This baby, boy or girl, will be the 1st of the next generation of royals and maybe that's why he's extending this olive branch. We can't be outcasts anymore Drake. We have to mingle with these people. We can't spend the rest of out lives cooped up in Valtoria."
Before Drake could argue Olivia was hovering before them her voice loud enough to command the attention of everyone in the room. Although everything about her outwardly looked in place her eyes seemed to say something entirely different as if her mind was worlds away.
"Good morning I know you all enjoyed the brunch. Look. I want to take a group photo so if you all would just-"
"Seriously Olivia, you could have allowed us to prepare." Madeline takes out her compact mirror checking the bags under her eyes, Tariq who's sitting next to her does the exact same thing.
"This isn't a cover shoot. I don't have time for ....just...." Olivia lets out a huff "Everyone get up and head over here...please." This was the courteous she could be given the fact she's spent the entire night carving Mick up like a chicken only to get useless information on Boss. Finally it occurred to her Mick was well aware of what Boss looked like so she came up with the idea of getting a photo of all the royals.
Everyone follows the duchess to a nearby staircase and slowly begin to get in place, Olivia moving those who would be hidden.
"Neville you have to come down at least 5 steps."
"But there's only women down there." He mutters
"I don't care I cant see you. Get Down!"
He reluctantly does, cringing with every snicker he hears deciding to leave the staircase entirely choosing instead to stand near the banister.
"Well since you are all here--except for King Liam, are we going to wait for him?"
"No his guards said he was indisposed. All right everyone get ready!"
Neville ignoring Olivia steps out to face the royals "I would like to invite you all to my soiree for New Yea--"
"Let me stop you right there. I'm sure I speak with everyone when I say hard pass Neville. I'd have more fun in a broom closet then at Cormery Isle."
"Hey I said that too!" Maxwell chuckles.
"Well-- well this will also be for our new Duke or Duchess of Voltaria it will be a...a..."
"A gender reveal." Riley aides.
"Yeah that." Neville looks off in frustration.
"The kid doesn't even have a gender yet and already you're making poor parenting choices." Olivia bites her bottom lip, vexed. It should not be this damn difficult to get a handful of people to stand still for 2 minutes. "I'll see if I can make it. Now quit moving...
"Wait don't forget to tel us when to say "cheese" so we will know to smile." Hana chides
"I don't care if you smile Just-"
"Well what kind of photo will that look like." Maxwell continues.
"1.2.3. Cheese . " Olivia quickly snaps the camera taking a quick look she sees that several men were not facing straight.
"Look. I'm only going to take this shot one more time. EVERYONE. Look this way or so help me I will gouge your eyes out with my stiletto, Got it?"
"Cheese!" everyone quickly responds.
The photo in her hand felt powerful, like an end to everything that has happened this year. Torturing Mick was cathartic in a since, Olivia had spent months being preoccupied with her mother's history and her own with the men in her life. Giving pain to someone helped release some of her own.
She's practically running through the large doors of the dungeon straight to the table where Mick was---gone.
Mick was gone. The table where he once lay stood there cold and empty. Olivia is frozen deciding that if she blinked hard enough he would still be there.
"Shit he got away!"
"No..he didn't" She jumps at the sight of Liam emerging from a dark corner of the room. "Olivia... we need to talk."
"Where is Mick? Where is he?" Olivia, hysteric and embarrassed, knew she should have came to Liam with Mick and the truth of what was going on but more than anything she wanted to figure it all out herself. To hand Boss to her king on a silver platter. To prove that neither of therm were their parents, or at least they didn't have to be. "He has to tell me who Boss is. Take me to him right now!"
"I can't do that." Liam turned away from her "I'm so sorry Liv. I'm so sorry I believed it was you behind all the attacks.
"Yeah...yeah I get it. My mom tried to kill your dad, your dad actually killed my mom. You'd be an idiot not to suspect me. But can we pause the apologies for just a moment someone in this photo is the actual Boss and Mick is the only person that can pick him out. So please wherever you have him just bring him back."
Liam didn't speak for a moment only staring away at the dark corner he entered from.
"He's dead Olivia." the kings words slow but powerful, so much so Olivia didn't believe she heard him correctly. Liam went on explaining what happened but nothing registered, her eyes glued to her photo.
"Your Majesty I think you should consider letting the guardsman handle this."
"I think you should mind you own damn business."Mick fires at Bastien then quickly going back to his best performance of a pained man "Come on, Your Honor, let me go. I will tell you everything you didn't know about Red."
Liam's hand stayed on the latch of the restraint. He took a moment to actually look at the man laying below him.
"I'm such an idiot." Liam chuckles " You think I don't know Liv?"
Mick nervously chuckles with the king shrugging his shoulders.
"Yeah but she has a dark side...as you can see. The Bitch is crazy!"
"Never in a million years would Liv hire you. Even if she did want to kill me, the second you'd call her "Red" would be the second you would have been fired." Liam lets go of the restraint his smile wide and full of joy.
It was Mick's turn to laugh and he did it with ease, as if he wasn't still restrained to the table in a room filled with armed guards. "You know it took Red 2 seconds to look at me and know exactly what I was up to that night. You know she's the reason I didn't get to kill you when I had the chance. Didn't even get to make back into the room because Miss. Spitfire wouldn't settle down. I knocked her ass unconscious at least 3 times that night."
Mick laughed on as Liam took a step back hanging onto every word breathing them in like knowledgeable fresh air.
"Now I see why people want you dead. You're a horrible King! Just some some pathetic rich kid who gets to have other men--real men-- do your dirty work. The only person with some balls around here is Red. If your going to have them kill me get it over with I'm sick of looking at you!"
Mick became frantic, the longer the men watched him in silence the more fear crept in. But they don't move, the guards stand their ground all waiting for their king to command them.
"Oh sir rest assured these men wont harm you unless I order them to. And I have no intention on doing that" Liam states rolling up his sleeves scaling through the torture devices Olivia had left behind."I always knew Olivia had a dark side...I wonder just how dark I can be."
"...one thing lead to another..he... he told me about he did to you...and I..." Liam raised both his hands to show Olivia "I just wanted him to shut up. I...I didn't even realize what I had done until he stopped squirming in my hands eventually Bastien pulled me off of him. The guards took him away a while ago. I’ve been waiting here for you ever since.”
Olivia takes a long breath "I was going to solve this."
They grew quite again sitting in the dark room, but soon Liam starts to laugh.
"Is it crazy that I can't be upset by this? I mean yes we still don't know who's out to get me but..." He smiles brightly at the Duchess "I know who it isn't. And that means more to me than anything."
"Finding out I'm not the one behind the attacks is better to you than actually finding the scum?"
Liam nods his head yes as Olivia raises an eyebrow.
"Yeah that's crazy."
Liam chortles pulling her into his arms not wasting a second to crash his lips onto hers. She could feel the kiss growing and took a step back to catch her breath.
"One of these people are actually out to kill you." She shakes the photo in his face trying her best to look serious knowing she was blushing. He takes a second to look at but then tosses it onto the barren table, cupping her face in his hands looking deep within a eyes.
" Yes but it wasn't you. I don't give a damn what miserable person has this vendetta out against me. Probably someone who has been unhappy for a long time and will be unhappy long after me because they have nothing. But I have you.
Liam held her in his arms once more and she let him breath her in. This Liam, this happy person she hadn't seen in months, or ever.
Happy.
Someone who is unhappy.
She looked to the photo next to her. This time actually looking at it. There in the photo were all the faces she had known pretty much her entire life. All of them looking towards the camera, all of them smiling saying "cheese"...all of them but one.
Neville.
"Oh my God! We are fucking idiots! I know who Boss is!"
"What? Who?"
"Are you going to Neville's New Year's Party?"
"No one goes to that...you'd have more fun in a broom closet."
"Yeah but this year I think Neville is planning something more than just fireworks."
2 and a half weeks later
He was watching her.
she hadn't thought about that fact until she was already deep within Neville's mansion The faint music from his from his party a noticeable reminder that she is no where near safety. But she follows on making sure to stay a good distance from the masked man.
He was watching her.
She hasn't thought to question how long. How long has he been in the dark corner staring at her. Her only thought when seeing that mask, when their eyes finally did meet was that this man was Boss, it had to be.
As he turns down towards another wing of the home Olivia braces herself realizing the man knew she was fallowing him.
She could turn back around, run and get the guards..
No. 2 weeks of trying to convince Bastien Neville is Boss was enough. She needed proof and if it wasn't Neville, Boss sure as hell was at this party and tonight would be the very last night she'd call this coward behind a mask that name. Olivia was getting damn sick of that name.
The man quickly turns a corner and before the duchess trails behind she freezes. This is it. Once turning this corner she would face him. Breathing in deep her feet move before her mind. She edges around the corner taking in the full sight of him standing, waiting at the end of the hallway looking directly at her.
Hiding her gasp with a gulp she walks toward him forcing down ever fear that dared to creep upon her. "Who are you?" She asks.
Without hesitation he removes his mask and at the sight her heart stops.
"You?!" is all she can muster as if his face knocked the wind out of her.
His words the final nail into her makeshift coffin. "Hey, Cherry.".

All Through the Night
A Choices The Royal Romance Dark AU
A/N Sorry this took so long in coming. Life is getting in the way of my writing lately. This is a very dark chapter. We've had a ton of fluff with the pairings and sadly this chapter has none of that. WARNING: Violent character death, animal death, violence. There will be other deaths in upcoming chapters, this begins the dark arc of our story.

Masterlist
Part 8
Time passed quickly for some and slowly for others. It has been nearly three months since that fateful night that Liam appeared in Olivia's training room to announce his intention to find a wife. Little did they both know that those brief weeks of Liam finding the one he was meant for was only building up to the end of the peace they had secretly cultivated between the Dark Kingdom and Cordonia.
There were a few who were beginning to scheme ways to make the two kingdoms one.
Olivia was currently dealing with her own problem, otherwise known as, Lucretia.
Her aunt was demanding she do something about continuing the Nevarkis line.
"You and I are the only ones left of our family!" Lucretia stormed down the hall in pursuit of her niece. "Your parents not only had you by the time they were your age but were also planning on adding more."
Olivia hesitated at that unknown fact.
"They were trying to have another child?"
"Of course!" Lucretia huffed. "We need as many of us as we can to protect our kingdom." Her nose wrinkled. "As much as the Beaumont's work alongside our family, they have dwindled in number much like we have." Her eyes narrowed upon her niece. "You must marry and have children."
Perhaps it was because she was queen, then again, perhaps it was simply a part of her makeup; but Olivia bristled being told what to do.
"I will marry when I find the right man to rule by my side."
Lucretia followed her into the queen's chambers.
"The right man? You've been introduced to countless nobles from all over Europe! Any man would jump at the chance to become your consort."
Olivia rolled her eyes. "Yes, I've met them. There hasn't been one that remotely deserved Cordonia or me."
"Deserved--" Lucretia tried to control her temper. "Olivia, you aren't waiting on a love match, are you?"
"Don't be ridiculous." Olivia snapped.
Lucretia quietly studied her.
"I'm not!" Olivia insisted. "I'm simply trying to find someone I can stomach and who will stand back and continue to let me rule." Her green eyes cut to her aunt. "Don't think for a moment that I've forgotten all your lessons about a Nevarkis not needing love."
Lucretia's stance eased. "Good. Though our family has been known to occasionally indulge in," her lips firmed into a sneer, "romance, one needs to focus on our duty."
Olivia sighed as her aunt went into her diatribe of a Nevarkis protecting Cordonia and destroying any and all members of the Rhys family. As she tuned her out, Olivia began to wonder what would have happened if Lucretia had found someone to marry and have a family all her own."
It was a shame that the princess had been attacked when she was younger. Her face still bore the savage claw marks of an enraged werewolf, though after all these years they had faded somewhat. Olivia wondered if that was what kept her aunt from ever having a social season of her own. Had she been scared of rejection? Or, was she simply devoid of affection and attraction to others?
******************
Many years ago...
Lucretia, jealous of her older sister, had decided that if she couldn't be heir to the throne, then she would be Cordonia's true hero. The fifteen-year-old, armed with her own ruby dagger, escaped late one night from her chambers in Lythikos. The frigid temperatures invigorated her resolve as she made her way to the northern most tip of the Dark Kingdom.
News had spread throughout Lythikos that farm animals were disappearing each night. While everyone set traps for foxes and wolves, tragedy struck. A family of five who lived along the border were viciously murdered. The local law enforcement was struck speechless at the sheer violence that had occurred in the once warm, inviting cabin. The floor, walls, and ceiling were coated in a thick layer of frozen blood. Not one shred of evidence could be found. No fingerprints. No murder weapons. Absolutely nothing. Each person had been torn to pieces.
Lucretia and her parents made their way to the scene. They each had their theories and were soon in agreement.
It had to have been a werewolf.
The people of Lythikos were touched that their King, Queen, and Princess had come at such a time. Lucretia closely watched her parents field questions while promising to make the perpetrator suffer for harming a Lythikosian. When asked where the Crown Princess Camillia was, the reporters and crowd of townspeople were delighted to hear that she was on her way home from her current suitor's, Lord Lionel Bukovaki, of the nearby Auvernal.
Lucretia rolled her eyes. She knew it was expected that the princesses make the right matches in both nobility as well as fighting prowess, but to add the unneeded romance of it was ridiculous. A Nevarkis didn't need love and courting. Didn't the people of Cordonia see that?
If she was to go how her sister acted over Lord Lionel, then Camillia somehow had succumbed to that silly set of feelings.
Thinking nothing but being with Lionel will make her soft. Sloppy. She'll never be able to take out Constantine if she keeps it up.
Lucretia knew at fifteen that it would be up to her to ensure that the Nevarkis family remain the victor in every encounter with the minions of the Dark Kingdom.
Finding the werewolf responsible for the murders would be the first step in her becoming a true warrior princess.
Somehow though, facing the monsters alone was harder than she ever dreamed. There was a reason Luthor Nevarkis encouraged his surviving children to marry and have families. Backup with those you can trust and depend on was a must when faced with the horrors of the Dark Kingdom.
Hearing nothing but the snow crunch under her boots did nothing to ease the fear creeping down her back. She'd never been across the border before. She'd read about her ancestors doing so, but to actually be in the Dark Kingdom was terrifying.
Lucretia barely had time to react. The moment she crossed that little known barrier between the two kingdoms, the werewolf was upon her. Once he got a good look at her face, he turned back into a human.
"Well, well." His gravelly voice held hints of his wolf growl. "If it isn't the little princess."
Lucretia stared up at him, fear keeping her paralyzed. She began to tremble within his grasp. Her red cloak spread out over the snow, making the werewolf whisper how it reminded him of how blood flowed.
"Did you know that when it hits the snow, there's a delightful hiss. Steam rises before it freezes." His teeth flashed as his face began to morph. "I do think it is my favorite sight in the world." He leaned near her ear. "I can't wait to see how yours looks."
Lucretia wasn't able to scream out a denial. Before she could draw the necessary breath, he had her back on her feet.
He waved toward the snowy woods. "Run, Princess. Run with every last ounce of energy you have. I need your blood pumping. I need it pounding in your ears." He shifted down into a pounce position. "I need it spraying out across the snow as I tear into your tender flesh."
Lucretia took off. Her mind began to review her options of survival as she zigzagged through the woods. Her breath came out in staggered puffs as she tried to unknot her cloak. Ripping it in her terror, the ribbons cut into her throat. Trickles of blood froze against her skin, reminding her what was ahead.
Her temper rose at the thought that a mere creature would dare threaten her. She was a Nevarkis! She was the only one to know the evil that was behind her and how to stop it. Stopping in her tracks, she whirled around, slicing into the werewolf's face.
He jerked back with a growl, quickly morphing back into a human. His eyes raked over her with a hint of amusement.
"You think to stab me with your toy, Princess?" He began to circle around her. "You think your dagger and whatever your family has taught you about those weak vampires will allow you to end me? A descendant from the first werewolf of Cordonia?"
Lucretia tried to stop her trembles. She refused to act afraid in front of him.
"That's it." He cooed, slowly shifting before her. "Fear makes your heart pump faster."
Lucretia tried to dodge when he jumped upon her. She nearly made it, when his claws raked her back. Hissing in pain, she whirled to stab him in his black heart. Her short stature had her raising her arms above her head to slam her ruby dagger within his chest.
He howled in agony. With a swipe of his claws, he caught her on the left side on her face. With a vicious yank, he sliced up from her jawline to where her hair softly began to curl, just barely missing her eye.
Lucretia cried out from the pain when he purposely dug his claws in deeper, making certain she was poisoned with the werewolf venom. She struggled to get her dagger out of his chest.
The two combatants fell to the snow, their blood turning the area around them pink as they rolled about for control. Relying on her burst of adrenaline, Lucretia managed to finally free her dagger.
She then began to stab and cut every place she could reach.
The werewolf continued to attack her, biting and clawing, until his strength eventually gave out.
Lucretia never stopped stabbing him. Her fear had turned her movements into a wild almost frenzy. He had hurt her, almost killed her, and she refused to possibly fall for some type of trick of him playing dead.
Her father and some of their soldiers found her through the cries and screams that were slipping out as she slashed and hacked the creature to pieces.
It had taken her father's stern voice and being pinned down in the snow by three soldiers to snap her out of her trance. The king ordered two of his guards to fetch Regina while he took his daughter in his arms.
Lucretia met her father's eyes and finally saw how proud he was of her.
Then that pride turned to anger.
"Do not ever go into the Dark Kingdom without me, your mother, or your sister again."
"But I won." She argued.
"Won?" He snorted. "Look what it cost you."
Lucretia blinked back tears of frustration. "I did it for Cordonia!"
"You did it to prove yourself." He snapped back. "You did it for personal glory. That is not what our ancestors fought for. That's why what we do is kept secret. We do not seek notice or accolades. We only seek protection for those under our care." His bright green eyes softened somewhat as he gazed down at his youngest. "Understand?"
Lucretia nodded in a jerky manner.
"Good." He huffed. "I refuse to let any creature take another Nevarkis from me, especially you and your sister."
Lucretia's tears slipped silently down her cheeks. The last thing she had meant to do was cause her family worry.
"Stop that." Her father snapped. "We only weep for those whom we have lost. A Nevarkis does not feel sorry for herself."
"I wasn't--" she sniffed and wiped at her eyes, "yes, sir."
"You have much left to learn." Her father continued. "Focus on that before heading out for another round of fighting."
"Yes, sir." She mumbled.
She knew then that her fight with a werewolf had not brought her any of the status she had hoped in her parents' eyes. She would buckle down and do all that they instructed to be what she was supposed to be.
********************
The loss of her parents and then years later losing her sister and brother-in-law had nearly broken Lucretia. She was alone for the first time with nothing but a five-year-old to care for. There was no one she could turn to who could possibly understand this weight of responsibility that had fallen upon her.
Her love for her family made the pain of their loss so great that she could barely breathe. Barely think. Barely move. Regina and others told her of Olivia needing comfort, yet Lucretia couldn't do it. She had no comfort for herself, much less the little girl who had lost her entire world.
The pain was breaking her. She knew then that if she could do anything for her niece, it would be to train her to not have such strong feelings for others. That was the only way to truly shield her from harm. If one didn't care, then one could do whatever was necessary. Make the sacrifices. Continue on when others fall.
She vowed to her sister's tombstone that she would make certain Olivia became a cold, calculated warrior queen, the likes Cordonia had never seen.
She would give the little girl a life free from heartache. A life, she, herself, wished to have.
********************
Back to the present: A few days later...
Lucretia knew Olivia was lying about her needing her aunt to check on Lythikos. The last week of hounding her into picking a husband had taken a toll upon the young queen. Refusing to argue about it anymore, she came up with some weak excuse to be rid of her aunt for a few weeks.
Lucretia knew she was pressuring Olivia a little too much, but she felt deep down that soon her niece would have no one to depend on. She knew that her fighting days were well behind her. The wounds from so many battles left her body scarred and achy. The cold did little to help with the pain that would flare up from time to time.
It seemed though that her pain free moments were lessening more and more.
A few days spent before the great hall's fireplace in Lythikos helped ease some of her stiffness. Recalling old memories of galloping along the woods and mountains that surrounded her childhood home had her calling for a horse to be saddled.
The icy air cut through the warm layers of clothing. Ignoring it, Lucretia tapped her heel to her stallion's side, glorying in the thrill and freedom riding offered.
Coming upon one of her favorite spots, she dismounted to tie her horse to a nearby tree. Walking carefully along the frozen rock that jutted out over the town of Lythikos, she gazed upon the beauty of her homeland.
A sense of peace settled within her. She had many regrets when she thought of her past, yet none haunted her in this moment. She almost felt that old happiness she once had when her parents and sister were alive.
Her horse's frightened whinny cut through her haze of contentment. Whirling around, her eyes widened at the sight of one of the last people she ever thought to see in Lythikos, much less approaching her.
"Your highness," Leo bowed a bit mockingly before her.
"What is a son of the Dark King doing here?" She demanded.
"I think we both know the reasons for something like that." His lips twisted into a leer. "After all the history lessons, don't you know why a Dark Prince approaches you?"
Lucretia bit back a curse. Her dagger was back in the castle. She had been foolish to believe she was safe in the daylight on her own land.
Her eyes narrowed as she studied the Great Disappointment of the Dark Kingdom. Something about him was different. She could almost feel the immense power he seemed to possess.
Yet...he couldn't be a vampire. He was walking in the sunlight towards her. A werewolf would have already turned to attack. Plus, they preferred to do their hunting at night when their power was at full strength. What had he become?
His smile grew evil the closer he stepped.
"If you think to gain favor in Cordonia just because you're human, you are dead wrong." Her chin lifted as her words struck like a whip.
"Dead wrong?" He tried that out a few times. "How poetic, given that one of us will be dead in just a few moments."
Lucretia quickly took in her surroundings. He was blocking her exit from the edge of the cliff. There was nowhere to duck or find a weapon. She would have to depend on hand-to-hand combat for this battle.
"It has been far too long since I have had a chance to gain vengeance for my sister." She straightened her stance, settling in a slight crouch with fists lifted in readiness.
"Vengeance?" He repeated with another chuckle. "Forgive me, Princess, but this is merely the beginning of eliminating all those who stand in the way of my throne."
Lucretia's brow furrowed. "What do I have to do with your throne in the Dark Kingdom?"
"Ah, now you ask the right question." He smirked before coming to a stop about four feet away from her. "You see, I don't want just the Dark Kingdom. I want everything."
Lucretia's stance eased somewhat. "Meaning...?"
"Meaning I want both thrones, the Dark Kingdom's and the one your niece sits upon." Within a flash he was standing directly in front of her. "And I will have them."
Lucretia barely had a chance to scream as he picked her up and threw her into a nearby tree. She gasped against the pain of her ribs breaking. Coughing up blood, she struggled to get to her feet.
Leo clicked his tongue. "Poor princess. I suppose it was mean on my part to choose to eliminate you first. If you must know, I thought you the weakest, thus the best to test my new powers on."
"Powers?" She gasped as he jerked her to her feet, yanking her right arm out of socket.
"Yes, my powers came from someone you know." He tilted her face up. "The Countess Madeleine of Fydelia, The Guardian of Cordonia's own relative, is the one to help me." He leaned close to her ear to whisper. "She is going to be my queen, though she has no idea I meant to take over by killing each and every one of you."
"You'll never..." Lucretia clutched her head with her left hand. "No...I won't..."
Leo grinned. It seemed not only did he have super strength, but he also had the mind powers.
"I think you will." Leo motioned with his chin. "Start walking."
Lucretia struggled against the power he had over her legs. Each step caused her to cry out in denial. When she reached the edge of the cliff, he told her to stop and remain completely still.
"Now then," he stood directly behind her, "what is your most horrible memory?"
Lucretia felt the tears build within her eyes as he probed her mind.
"There it is." He crooned. "This is just what needs to be going through your mind as you die."
"No." Lucretia burst out into sobs. She was seeing her sister have her throat ripped out over and over again by Constantine.
Camillia had tried to get her to safety after they had managed to kill Eleanor. Seeing her husband die at the vampire's hands, she pushed her little sister behind her.
"Whatever happens, Olivia must be protected!" Camillia shouted. "Promise me!"
"I promise." Lucretia said softly.
Soldiers fought their way forward, trying to protect their queen and princess.
"Get her out of here!" Camillia demanded. "Constantine is mine."
Twirling her daggers in each hand, she rushed forward to kill the abomination that plagued her family and country.
"Camillia!" Lucretia screamed out when Constantine lifted her sister off the floor and bit into her throat. With a sickening, tearing sound, blood poured out of her sibling, pooling around the vampire king.
"I remember that night." Leo told her as it began its third replay in her mind. "You thought to destroy all of us in one single night." He sighed softly, coming to stand beside her. "And yet you failed, like every other Nevarkis. You'll never destroy them all. It's impossible. With you dead, your niece will feel the need to challenge Constantine. She'll believe he sent someone to kill you." He eyed her for a moment. "I should probably rough you up more before you die to make certain she knows this was no accident."
Lucretia could do nothing. His mind power kept her completely immobilized as he beat her. Bones crunched under his fists. Blood dripped down, freezing upon the rocky cliff. Lucretia's cries were caught up in the north wind.
And yet, the sight of her sister dying over and over again was all she could see.
"There now." Leo smiled at her. "I think that should do it." He picked her up and held her over his head. "Goodbye, princess."
He threw her will all his might, delighting in seeing her fly out over the town.
"Oh, I forgot." He released his hold upon her body, allowing her to move at will while keeping the images of horror in her mind.
Lucretia began to move and cry out as she fell further and further down.
Leo watched her and waited. With his new sight, he could see her fall closer and closer to the town's center. A statue of the late King Luthor had been erected shortly after his death. The artist had recreated the sight of the king upon his horse, which was rearing on two legs. The sculpture had the king in mid-motion with sword raised to lead a charge into battle.
Leo hadn't planned for this part. It was too perfect. Right before Lucretia became impaled upon her ancestor's sword, Leo released her mind so she could see what was happening to her.
Lucretia screamed when her sight was returned to normal. Unable to right herself, she landed face first. Her body was skewered completely on Luthor's sword.
Leo laughed out loud at the sight, wishing he could see Olivia's face when she found out. He doubted any of his ancestors could have done better.
On his way out of the forest, he decided to test his strength once more on Lucretia's horse. He picked it up, amazed how it felt like it weighed nothing and tossed it over the cliff's edge.
"Amazing." He breathed, looking upon his hands in wonder. "This power..."
He fell to his knees. Every drop of power he possessed drained from him in a rush, leaving him lightheaded.
"No!" He cried out, feeling the weak uselessness of his body return.
Scrambling for his phone, he called Madeleine.
"It's gone!" He yelled at her. "I thought the potion was permanent!"
"My love," Madeleine explained softly. "I can't make you the permanent one without a key ingredient. It says I must have the heart of the most powerful to make your powers remain intact."
He closed his eyes in frustration. The most powerful was his father. Yet he couldn't attack him without the needed powers, nor could he get his heart since it would turn to ash.
There had to be someone else whose heart would work.
"I've made you more temporary potions to help." Madeleine continued. "I would ask Regina what she thinks, but I don't want your father to suspect anything until you are ready to talk to him."
Leo's eyes flew open.
Of course! How could I forget about The Guardian? Regina's heart will do nicely.
"Leo, where are you? Did you test out your powers?" Madeleine asked.
"I did and they work beautifully." He told her.
"I'm so happy for you, my love. Where did you test them?"
"I decided to go to an area of the country where no people are around." He lied. "Threw a few trees around and scared the daylights out of a couple of animals."
Madeleine giggled imagining that. "Come home as soon as you can and I'll have everything ready for you to test some more."
Leo's lips curved at the thought of using those powers on Regina. He wondered if he could take the most powerful witch or would she end him. Either way, the path forward was clear to him.
Regina would have to die if he was to succeed in killing his father and Liam.
***********************
That night...
Olivia stared into the flames as she tried to wrap her mind around what the day had wrought.
And just like the night her parents had died, Liam appeared by her side.
She looked up at him.
"I'm so sorry, Olivia." He said softly, gently pulling her into a hug. "When I heard the news, I came as quickly as I could."
Olivia stood stiffly in his embrace.
"Who could have done this?" He asked. "Were there any--"
"Who?" Olivia bit out. "Who do you think, Liam?" She pushed him away from her. "It's your kind who took my last family member from me!"
His brow furrowed. "I know it has to be. That's why I'm here. I want to help you find the culprit."
Her eyes narrowed. "And then what? You'll just hand them over to me so that they can pay for their crimes?"
"Yes." He reached out for her, only to drop his hands when she stepped back. "You have my word that I will bring you whoever is responsible for this. There was no reason for her to be attacked when we've managed to have peace for so long."
"Peace?" Olivia snorted. "More like time to plan how to kill every remaining Nevarkis!"
"Olivia, you know that's not true." He snapped. "I would never hurt you or--"
"You might not, but we both know who would." She took a deep breath as tears slipped down her cheeks. "Your father is the only one with a reason to kill my aunt."
Liam swallowed the ready denial. He knew that to be true, yet his father was ill. He was too weak to not only do the attack himself but to also plan it. He had allowed no one into his chambers, save for Liam and Regina.
It had been a shock to Liam when he found out how sick his father truly was. He discovered the truth when he came into his chambers to set up a time to introduce Riley to the Dark Kingdom. It had only taken moments to realize something was wrong as his father tried to delay the meeting. With Regina's help, the truth was finally told.
Keeping it a secret was eating Liam up inside. His people deserved to know what was going on with their king. He decided to not think about that now and to simply focus on a way to help Olivia deal with this latest loss.
Who would have taken it upon themselves to not only leave the safety of the Dark Kingdom, but to follow Lucretia home to Lythikos and kill her in broad daylight?
"Well?" Olivia snapped him out of his musings. "I see you don't deny it."
"My father," Liam rubbed the back of his neck as he sat down, "he's sick."
Olivia's eyebrow raised.
"We don't know what kind of sickness it is." He rubbed his hands over his face. "Only that it is slowly weakening him."
Olivia took the chair next to his. "He's dying?"
Liam nodded. "I know. I've never heard of such a thing happening to a vampire either. Yet, he is dying from whatever this is."
Olivia bit down on her lip as she watched the hopelessness wash over Liam. She reached out and laid her hand over his.
He looked up at her.
Gently squeezing his hand, she relaxed back in her chair, resuming her silent stare into the fire.
"When can we examine your aunt's body?" He softly asked. "Once we see the wounds, we'll be able to narrow down what creature attacked her."
"I'm leaving for Lythikos in the morning." She replied. She bit down on her lip once more before forcing the words out. "You are welcome to sneak into the castle to assist me."
Liam gripped her hand in his. He couldn't help but think of the bond they had made years earlier during such an occasion.
"I'll be there." He promised. "Together, we'll figure out this mystery."
Olivia swiped at the fresh tears that were falling. She had felt so alone when she was given the news and now...
Now she had her best friend beside her, ready to do whatever he could to help her.

Liam sat comfortably behind the large oak desk at the end of his office, his best friend Drake poised on the chair across from him. Both men holding crystal tumblers in their hands.
“How’re things going with Sabrina?” Drake asked, crossing his ankle over his knee. Liam huffed deeply as he sipped the amber liquid in his glass.
“Between Olivia and my father I’m honestly shocked she’s still here.” He watched the swirling liquid.
“So... what’s your plan, Liam?” Drake’s voice pulled him out of his deep thoughts. What is my plan? His thoughts plagued him as his eyes met his best friend’s.
“I don’t know...” he whispered. “What would you do, Drake?”
The young man pushed the air from his lungs, his dark eyebrows raising into his hairline before looking at his friend.
“Well... you definitely need to have a conversation with Livvy,” he took a sip from his tumbler as Liam flinched. “And you probably want to pull back from your responsibilities. You know, free up some time to be with your woman and all.”
“Well...” he mused thinking about the week he had ahead of him. “My week is quiet after the Regatta tomorrow. Perhaps I could arrange to take Sabrina to Applewood for a few days...”
“Perfect! An empty manor... beautiful scenery... she won’t be able to resist,” Drake grinned, pushing himself off of the chair in front of his friend. “Talk to Livvy before the Regatta.”
Liam groaned loudly at the mere thought of the next conversation he needed to have.
—
“Livvy?” His soft voice cut through her concentration, causing the redhead to place the novel she was reading politely on her lap.
“Your Highness,” she smiled up at him, her green eyes shining brightly at him. “What can I do for you this beautiful morning?”
“Would you oblige me in a walk around the grounds?” He bowed gently towards the redhead before offering her his arm. Her smile grew as she moved the book to an end table before rising from the couch and accepting Liam’s arm.
“What do I owe this pleasure, Liam?” She carefully asked as he led her from the library and out into the courtyard.
“I needed to talk to you, Olivia,” he sighed, their slow steps taking them around the palace.
“Of course,” Olivia chewed nervously on her lower lip. This wasn’t her Liam in front of her. This was Prince Liam, cold… reserved. “You know you can always talk to me.”
“This is a topic I don’t want to have to talk to you about,” her anxiety peeked as his dark blue eyes met her own green ones. “Olivia, what happened the night of the ball?”
Olivia’s jaw dropped at his question, causing the pair to stop in the middle of the gardens. Her mouth worked for a few minutes before she was able to form any sort of thought.
“Whatever do you mean, Liam?” She held her hand to her chest, shaking her head. “I told you then what had happened. That American beast attacked me. I was simply minding my own business when suddenly I was on my knees with my arm breaking behind my back.”
Liam raised his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose, his eyes closing tightly against a headache threatening his sanity.
“You know…” his voice was far away as his eyes opened and the hand dropped. “Bastien taught me this really cool move once. In order to keep someone from hurting you, themselves, or someone else; you take their arm and bend it in just the right way behind their back. Leo and I must have practiced that on each other for months.”
He chuckled softly at the memory, purposefully not looking at the woman next to him. She sighed deeply, hanging her head gently.
“I was the aggressor…” she whispered so softly Liam had to strain to hear her.
“What was that?” He craned his ear towards her, a soft growl exiting her throat.
“I was the aggressor!” She cried, her hands balling into fists at her side. “The American didn’t start it. I did.”
Liam nodded before starting his walk again. He was about thirty steps from her before she rushed forwards to catch up to him.
“You’re not going to yell at me?” She asked softly, ashamed of the actions she took that night.
“No, Olivia, I’m not,” his gaze didn’t move from a spot in front of him. “I do ask that you apologize to Sabrina though.”
“Wha?” She stopped in her tracks. Did he actually suggest that she apologize? Her? Olivia Nevarkis? “My apologies… I don’t think I heard you correctly.”
“You embarrassed her. You made her look like an aggressor. And you put me in a horrible situation.” Liam reasoned as he finally stopped and turned towards her. “The least you could do is apologize for your actions. I’ve already done so myself.”
“You can’t be serious, Liam!” She cried, her eyes welling with tears.
“Quite serious, Livvy,” He nodded, his dark eyes cold and hard. “Sabrina and I will be attending the Regatta tomorrow. I’d suggest you do it there. I can arrange for the two of you to have supervised privacy.”
Olivia’s posture slumped with acquiescence.
“After the Regatta I’m going to take Sabrina to Applewood for a few days. I’d suggest you take that time to prepare Lythikos for the court…” Liam’s eyes softened as she slowly raised her gaze to his. “You’re one of my best friends, Livvy. I don’t expect you to love Sabrina. But I do expect you to treat her with respect.”
“Of course, Liam,” she whispered as he grazed her cheek with his thumb.
“Come on,” he gave her his first earnest smile of the day. “Let’s finish our walk.”
She nodded easily, her own smile playing on her lips as she, once again, took his offered arm and continued their slow walk around the yard.
--
Liam threaded his fingers through Sabrina’s stopping her hand from pulling at her skirt for the thirtieth time in the past five minutes.
“You look beautiful,” he whispered into her ear before kissing the back of the hand he had captured. “Stop fretting.”
“Easy for you to say,” she grumbled, using the hand tied to Killer’s leash to fuss with the waistband of her skirt. “You’re not the foreigner trying to steal the love of a prince.”
Liam chuckled softly against the back of her hand before placing another kiss on it, earning a steely glare from his step-mother. Sabrina’s hand fell from her waistband as her lips pursed in embarrassment from the glare shot at the couple by the older woman.
Constantine, ignoring the antics of the people behind him, stoically stepped to the front of the podium they were standing on.
“Good morning, people of Cordonia, honoured guests,” he nodded to the group of nobles off to the side of the podium before smiling at the group of women nearest to the pier. “And distinguished suitors. Today represents the generosity shared by all Cordonians in relation to our neighbours, here at home and aboard. To mark this feeling our gallant suitors will race in the first race of the day to earn favour of our Crown Prince Leo. Suitors to your boats.”
The group of woman clamoured to their waiting rides, Liam’s hand tightening around Sabrina’s causing her to smile up at him. Her grin was infectious, feeling his own smile grow as he leaned in to capture his lips with his own.
“Liam!” Regina’s sharp hiss pulled the couple apart roughly. Sabrina’s cheeks dusted with colour at the reprimand. “Show some decorum. You are here for your brother.”
“My apologies, Regina,” Liam’s lips twitched traitorously, staring straight out at the crowd. Leo’s throat cleared as he held his hand up to his mouth to hide his own grin from the Queen.
Leo slid easily towards the couple standing at the back of the podium, earning a low growl from the animal at Sabrina’s feet.
“Nice doggy…” Leo held his hands up to Killer as he took a large step to the side.
“Hey,” Sabrina admonished the dog gently. “Be nice. He’s a friend, you goof.”
The Queen rolled her eyes in exasperation as the young woman spoke to the animal as if it understood her.
“Sorry,” she whispered over to Leo. “Her bark’s worse than her bite.”
“Hmmm…” Leo glanced warily at the beast perched at her owner’s feet. “I think I’d still rather avoid the bite. So, Brother, who are you betting on in the suitors’ race?”
Sabrina’s head whipped between the brothers as Liam’s lips curled into a full smile. He brought her hand to his lips for a third time, pretending to consider his options.
“Lady Elin has always shown great feats in any race I’ve witnessed…” Liam mused as the boats launched themselves through the water.
“I don’t know... I saw Lady Rebeka’s crew this year...” Leo mused, his lips pursed in thought. “A very strong competitor.”
The group fell silent for a few moments, watching for which boat would come through the turn strongest.
“Who was the blond woman from the ball, Liam…? The one you both grew up with?” Sabrina kept her eyes on the water as the boats began to cross the finish line.
“Madeleine?” Leo scoffed. “Maddi doesn’t sail.”
“Well… she knows someone who does then…” she nodded towards the pier. “Because she just won.”
“It could be worse…” Leo shrugged as he started towards the pier. “Rebeka kisses like a dead fish!”
Liam laughed loudly as his brother trotted towards the winner, his father mere steps ahead of him. Turning away from the scene unfolding he turned towards Sabrina, rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb.
“Come and walk the beach with me?” He asked softly, imploring her with a soft gaze. Her lips tugged into a soft smile as she nodded gently. Killer’s ears perking up at the word ‘walk’. “You want to come too, girl?”
The dog barked excitedly as Sabrina led her off the podium, Liam’s hand solidly on the small of her back.
--
The couple wandered down the beach hand in hand, occasionally throwing a driftwood stick for Killer to chase and bring back to them. Every once in a while the dog would become infatuated with something she had found in the sand, barking wildly at it before Sabrina would whistle to bring her back to them.
Liam bent down to take the latest stick from the dog’s mouth as a throat was cleared softly behind them. The couple turned slowly, Sabrina’s eyes widening at the redhead before them.
“My apologies,” Olivia spoke softly. “I was wondering if I could speak with Sabrina.”
Liam nodded, his lips drawn in a line as he called for Killer. Sabrina’s eyes widened as she realized he was leaving her alone with the other woman.
“Liam Rys…” She hissed at him. “Don’t you dare leave me here!”
“You’ll be fine,” he assured her, kissing her cheek gently. “Just try not to put her in a restraint this time…”
Sabrina gaped as he ran down the beach, her dog hot on his heels barking playfully at him.
“Even the dog abandons me in my hour of need…” she muttered. Taking a deep breath she steeled herself against whatever the woman wanted to say to her, determined not to react in any way. “What can I help you with, Olivia?”
Olivia took a deep breath of her own before meeting the gaze of the other woman.
“I want to apologize for my actions at the masquerade ball,” the words tumbled out of her mouth so quickly even Sabrina had a hard time keeping up with what she was saying. “I have had some time to reflect on my actions and what I had done to you… and to Liam… was wrong.”
“And Liam yelled at you and told you to apologize?” Sabrina’s arms folded across her chest, glaring at the younger woman.
“No!” She cried, her voice catching in her throat. She cleared the catch softly as she hung her head. “Well… yes… I suppose it was similar to that.”
“Look, Olivia, I really don’t care if we’re friends or not,” Sabrina started, holding up her hand as the younger woman started to speak. “I’m not here to take Liam away from anyone. I’m here because he asked me to be here. And I’ll be here until he asks me to leave. And honestly, I don’t give a shit how that affects you.”
“I understand,” Olivia nodded gently. “I do hope you can accept my apology, Sabrina. I truly am sorry.”
“I’ll take it under advisement,” she nodded harshly. “Thank you.”
Olivia nodded once more before turning to head back to the pier. She paused briefly, half turning back to the blond watching her leave.
“Sabrina?” She asked gently, bringing the ice blue eyes to her own. “Please, just don’t hurt him?”
“I don’t plan to,” Sabrina offered the girl a small smile, which was uneasily returned before Olivia continued her way to the waiting car.
Sabrina stood, staring after the girl for a while, not noticing that Liam had returned to her.
“You didn’t kill each other,” Liam whispered in her ear. Sabrina startled at his voice, jumping slightly.
“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!” She cried, pushing her hand against her chest. “What the hell, Liam?”
“I’m so sorry, Sabrina,” Liam laughed, ducking under her swinging arm. “I thought you knew I was behind you.”
“UGH! You can seriously be such a jerk some days.” She rolled her eyes as he pulled her into his chest.
“How about a nice quiet week in the country?” He murmured into her hair. “Just the two of us?”
“I say, when do we leave?” She whispered back into his chest before letting him lead her, and Killer, towards a waiting car.

More Like Her
Wacky Drabbles #30
I am participating in @emceesynonymroll wacky drabbles. This week’s prompt is “I’m not afraid to use this” and will highlighted by bold text.
BOOK: TRR3/THR (AU, slightly left of canon.)
Characters; Riley (MC), Hana, Olivia, Penelope, Kiara, and Madeleine.
Word Count: 1,100 plus. Oops. It needed come out of my soul, y’all. I don’t apologize. 🤣
I have wanted to write this for a minute. I’ve honestly always felt bad for Madeleine, and this is how I image Madeleine dealt with things.
Song Inspiration: “More Like Her” by Miranda Lambert. (Follow the link to listen.)
PS- I am trying to learn how to make the “keep reading” link work but I’m solely on mobile 🤷🏼♀️
———
Madeleine sighed.
She didn’t necessarily hate coming to court functions, but she couldn’t stand the looks of pity she received from, well, everyone.
She was sitting at a table caddy-corner to Riley, Hana, Penelope, Kiara, and Olivia. There was an empty spot at the table; the name card in front of the plate had Madeleine elegantly written.
Riley was hosting a brunch for the ladies at court. The press had been in attendance, to show how the ladies at court met regularly to help the duchies. There had been a few male court members, but they had been shooed shortly after the press.
“You’ll always have a place at my court, Madeleine,” Riley has said at her homecoming ball.
“Liam’s court,” Madeleine had hissed.
It didn’t matter that Madeleine was hurt that day— it was Riley’s court, too. Madeleine couldn’t figure out how, but Riley had made Cordonia fall head over heels with her, too. Not just Liam.
I guess she’s pretty . . . In a quaint, American way, Madeleine mused, looking over her glass of champagne to Riley.
Riley had made a good Queen; a fair and kind ruler, much to Madeleine’s dismay. She had hoped Riley would fail epically and come crawling back. Riley had asked Madeleine to be her press secretary. That had been . . . Okay. Not wonderful, but okay.
Madeleine couldn’t force herself to hate Riley, as much as she wanted to.
“Madeleine,” Riley called to her, “why don’t you come join us?” Riley looked at her with a smile.
Madeleine sighed internally and forced herself to smile back at Riley. She stood and made her way to her replacement. “I need to powder my nose and I’ll be right back.” Madeleine was surprised by the sincerity in her voice.
“Riley, I don’t understand why you’re so nice to her,” Olivia quipped when she thought Madeleine was out of hearing distance.
“She didn’t have anything against me, as you may remember, Olivia,” Riley said, voice dropping low. “She welcomed me on her engagement tour and handed Liam over to me with no argument. We are not discussing this further.” Riley’s Queen Voice was firm and commanding.
Madeleine smiled sadly to herself as she walked to the restroom. She didn’t want Riley to protect her, but she was grateful that Riley had no ill will toward her.
She stared at herself in the mirror. Could she really do this for the rest of her life? Could she stand the pity looks and the whispers? All she wanted was to be Queen. Maybe if Madeleine had been gentler and nicer to Liam, he would still be with her and she would be Queen.
While Madeleine didn’t resent Riley, she was mad as hell at Liam. He had it all— a fiancée that didn’t care who he slept with as long as it was a quiet affair, for the price of the crown— he could have had happiness and an easy life. But he threw it away for Riley. Liam had promised her that he wouldn’t end their engagement for Riley. Madeleine had even trusted Liam. Even though he didn’t love her, he made Madeleine feel safe, secure, and even beautiful when the occasion called for it. I guess he wanted Riley more than he admitted to me, Madeleine thought as a tear escaped.
Madeleine should have ended things with Liam before they even began. She should have held onto what little dignity she had left instead of wondering where her fiancé was every night of the engagement tour. Every night he would disappear. Yes, he kept up appearances, but as soon as the court was gone, he was with Riley. Madeleine should have never let Liam lie. To her face, to his father; to his people.
Madeleine hurt more than she had ever admitted to anyone, but who tore those walls down? Riley. Who held her hand as she grieved the loss of her relationship and the crown? Riley. Who let her cry on their shoulder? Scream at them? Scream at Liam? Who encouraged her to tell off her family? Riley, Riley, Riley. Riley was Madeleine’s only friend, but Madeleine had to give up her dreams to see that.
Madeleine returned to the room and sat at the table at the seat set for her.
Olivia smiled coyly and went to say something, no doubt super sarcastic and maybe even mean, when Riley straightened in her chair.
Riley held up a fork threateningly. “I’m not afraid to use this, Olivia. You will be civil today, Duchess.” Riley’s eyes narrowed challengingly. Her Queen Voice was back.
Olivia sunk back dutifully, all excitement draining from her. “You’re no fun, Riley,” she pouted.
Madeleine smiled gratefully at Riley. Riley nodded in response.
“Madeleine, I have an idea for raising funds in Portvia*. I would love your help,” Riley said.
“I would love to hear it. I’ll call you to set up a time tomorrow,” Madeleine responded.
Silence fell as the ladies ate. Madeleines mind wondered back to her failed engagement. Riley was stronger than Madeleine.
If Madeleine had been in Riley’s shoes— thrown under the bus, name dragged through the press, watching the love of her life go on with another woman— she would not have forgiven Liam and would not have married him. She didn’t forgive Liam for breaking her trust, all these months later.
Riley was a bigger woman.
Liam didn’t look like much of a man, let alone a King, to Madeleine.
Just then, Liam swept into the room, stealing Riley’s attention. Riley’s face lit up and she stood to greet her husband. He and Riley met in the middle of the room and when they met, Liam bent down to kiss Riley. It was a chaste kiss, but the love they felt radiated through the room. He whispered in her ear then turned his focus to the ladies. He greeted each one with a smile and the ladies nodded in return.
When his eyes met Madeleine’s, she smiled, but there was no emotion behind it.
He bowed deeply then took his leave, kissing Riley on the cheek.
Madeleine looked down at her food, appetite gone.
Maybe if she had been as kind and caring as Riley, Liam would have learned to love her. Maybe she should have been nicer to Liam and not held him at arm’s length.
If Riley could put it all in the past, so could Madeleine. She looked up, determined not to be so bitter from here on out. She looked at Riley, who was talking animatedly with Hana.
Yes, Madeleine thought, Riley is beautiful, and not in a quaint, American way.
*Penelope’s Duchy. I can’t remember how to spell it and I’m waaaaay too tired right now.
Lots of love,
Red
